Video footage of an alleged sasquatch shot in Mission has gone viral, and has been reported in media

around the world. The YouTube clip was posted by a B.C.-based software company that creates smartphone games, and claims the footage was shot by a

couple who had been hiking along a logging road above a lake in Mission, when they spotted something moving in the distance. They captured a hairy

figure in the distance on film, and the video was placed online. The Sun, a U.K.based tabloid, picked up the video and put a story on their

website, running it with the headline, “Is this mystery figure Bigfoot?” Fox News, the Huffington Post and other media outlets around the world have

since posted the video on their websites. The video, posted on YouTube on July 24 by the user LegendTracker, an app for iPhone and Android launched

by the company PlayMobility, had already received over 70,000 views on Monday. By Tuesday, it had reached CONTINUED ON 3

Thousands flock to festival Mission folk music event brings big crowds to Fraser River Heritage Park Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Video footage, allegedly shot by hikers in Mission, claims to show the elusive sasquatch. WEB PHOTO

Thousands of music lovers flocked to Fraser River Heritage Park this past weekend to enjoy the sounds of the 26th annual Mission Music Folk Festival. The numbers were up “beyond expectations,” said artistic director Francis Edwards. “One of the most satisfying things was the

lineup based on good music, diverse music and different cultures and different genres. This wasn’t celebrity-driven.” All three day stages offered some shade and were well-attended. The main stage in the evening attracted a diverse crowd of dancers and loungers. “It was an idyllic weekend,” said Ed-

wards. “All the crew, volunteers and staff worked well together.” Stages, tents and other necessities went up and down without any problems and by the end of the day Monday, there were just small traces of the festival left at the park. “Some things get easier (over the course of 26 years), but there can be some challeng-

es. We’re basically setting up in a field.” Edwards heard positive comment from audiences who enjoyed the sunny weekend, and the same comments were being echoed days after the event. “I don’t recall getting as many comments from people as I did this year,” said Edwards, who has al-

ready begun planning next year’s folk festival. It takes about 16 months of planning to put on this event, noted the artistic director, who doesn’t anticipate major changes next year. “We will continue to work with audiences and artists to build the best festival we can.”

over 400,000 views, and stirred up online discussion among those who believe Bigfoot is out there, and those who say the video is fake. The LegendTracker app allows users to go on an “augmented reality geo-caching adventure,” where users can use their phones at specific locations to view legends, such as Ogopogo or the sasquatch. Miles Marziani, CEO of PlayMobility, said the company created LegendTracker to help get kids “out of the house and out exploring.” They occasionally put out a call for the public to send in any footage pertaining to legends and recently made a call for sasquatch videos. About two weeks ago, they posted the submitted footage, which has since been picked up by media around the world. Marziani said they are not disclosing who shot it, or the exact location. LegendTracker also posted video on July 22 of sasquatch supposedly being caught on video by Chinese tour-

ists in Mission. That video has received about 11,000 views. The account has also previously released videos of Cal Crawford with Landmark Realty in Mission, showing a sasquatch a new home. With all the attention tuned to the sasquatch seemingly residing in Mission, the District of Mission is happy to encourage people to get out and join the search. Stacey Crawford, economic development officer for the district, said the municipality is actively promoting the LegendTracker app. When asked whether the sasquatch is residing in Mission, Crawford said, “who knows?” but added that the LegendTracker app “takes advantage of Mission’s fantastic recreational outdoor amenities,” and helps people get out on local trails and some local corporate partners. He said that the sasquatch has also been seen around Mission at “some local events,” and people will have to “stay tuned” to see where the sasquatch turns up next.

Suspected car thief in custody Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

A Mission man is in custody after police spotted him climbing into a stolen vehicle. Thieves stole two vehicles from the Mission area this week after the owners left the vehicles running with keys in the ignition to take care of errands. The vehicle

thefts were reported to police, who made inquiries around town. “A lot of our guys have good contacts in the community,” said Mission RCMP Insp. Richard Konarski. “They were following up on a tip and found a stolen truck at the Sports Park.” Coincidentally, the truck’s owner, who was looking for his vehicle,

A public celebration of life has been set for Saturday, Aug. 10 for Neville Cox. The service will be held at the Clarke Theatre beginning at 1 p.m. Cox was born in 1925 in Chislehurst, Kent, England and served in the British Navy from 1944 until 1947. Immigrating to Canada in 1957 with his wife and two daughters, Cox first lived in Kimberly, and then settled in Mission in 1965

when he took up a post as executive director of the Mission Memorial Hospital. In 1968, Cox was elected as the last reeve of the Town of Mission City and then served as the first mayor of the newly amalgamated District of Mission from 1970-1973. He was made a Freeman of the City in 1979. A reception will follow the service.

Recreation going on tour

Mission’s department of Parks, Recreation and Culture is going on tour this summer to a park near you. Look for the district’s Play Leaders in your neighbourhood this summer, who will spend two hours on Wednesday afternoons offering organized active games and crafts to

children in the community. Participation is free of charge. The Play Leaders will be at Fenn Park (Aug. 7), Griner Park (Aug. 14) and Silverdale Park (Aug. 21) from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. For more information call 604-820-5350.

Take a Bag/ Leave a Bag Program in Parks The District of Mission is encouraging dog owners to help keep our parks clean by bringing surplus bags from home to pick up and dispose of their dog’s waste. Over the last sever-

al months, the dog bag dispensers were altered to accept bags from home. This helps in two ways. First, it re-uses surplus bags. Second, it reduces the cost of purchasing bags for the dispensers.

District of Mission Dog Licensing and Animal Control and Impounding Bylaw No. 1782-1988 requires dog owners to pick up their dog’s waste and dispose of it in the containers provided. The end result is a clean park that all can enjoy. The district appreciates your cooperation. For further information or comments please contact Kerry Bysouth, Manager of Parks and Facilities at 604-8205356

Parks Gift Program

The Parks Gift Program is an opportunity provided by the District of Mission Parks, Recreation and Culture Department to allow citizens, community groups and businesses to donate park amenities to the District of Mission for the enjoyment of all. These amenities include benches, picnic tables and trees. They may serve as memorials or legacies for the enhancement of public parks, the Hatzic Cemetery and outdoor recreation facilities. When can I apply to contribute a gift? Applications are accepted year-round and forms are available from the Mission Leisure Centre or online

at mission.ca/leisure, however planting of trees may be delayed until the appropriate time of year to ensure survival. Benches and picnic tables are ordered upon receipt of payment. Installation schedules are dependent upon supplier availability and delivery.

Where will my contribution be placed?

The Parks, Recreation and Culture Department has identified numerous locations in the parks and at the cemetery for these amenities. Staff will assist you in selecting an appropriate location.

What will I receive in recognition of my contribution?

All bench and picnic table contributions include a cast aluminum plaque inscribed with a message. Messages can be a maximum of 70 characters.

Do I receive a tax receipt for my contribution?

All donors will be issued a tax receipt for their contribution. Further information o is available by contacting the Cemetery Clerk in the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department at 604-5350.

Fire caused by failed battery Bombers brought in Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Four puppies are lucky be alive after the detached shop they were sleeping in on Malquist Avenue went up in flames shortly after their owner took them out for the morning. There was no indication at that time something was wrong. Mission firefighters from three halls were

called to the home around 6:15 a.m. July 23, said Fire Chief Bob Cannon, noting the fire was not suspicious. Fire Prevention Officer Capt. Mike Schmidt spent the day combing through the charred remains and determined the battery on a motorcycle was the cause of the fire. The shop, located about 70 feet away from the main house, contained numerous

tools and a motorcycle with a battery which was being charged. It was the battery and not the charger that caused the fire, said Schmidt, noting the home was not damaged. He estimates damage could exceed $30,000. Schmidt advised vehicle owners when charging a battery, never do it in the vehicle or motorcycle.

Water bombers were brought in Sunday to help firefighters quell a blaze discovered earlier in the day in Mission. The fire was situated about seven kilometres up Burma Road, which runs along the west side of Stave Lake in the northern part of the community. Mission Fire/Rescue Service was called out just before 8 a.m. after someone spotted smoke billowing into the sky.

Firefighters found a slash pile — about 50 feet by 70 feet — ablaze once they arrived, and remnants of an unattended camp fire nearby, said Fire Chief Bob Cannon. The fire spread as the day warmed up, extending up the hillside. About 20 Mission firefighters worked alongside Coastal Fire Centre members and district forestry staff. Some of the 40-strong group were on scene until 10 p.m.

Can pot reform succeed in British Columbia?

B.C. is famed around the world for the quality of its marijuana, and people here buy, sell, grow and consume it mostly without fear of serious consequences from the law. Elections B.C. has given approval in principle to Dana Larsen’s initiative petition to amend the Police Act. More specifically, Larsen wants to decriminalize marijuana possession – a reminder that pot remains illegal, and unlike our neighbour in Washington state, our province and country remain far away from laws that take drug profits away from criminals.

Any move to shake up drugs laws in this country is seen as a good thing. But pot smokers shouldn’t have a victory toke yet – it’s not clear this initiative will even get off the ground, and, if it does, will the province give it the time of day? Larsen and his supporters need to collect signatures of at least 10 per cent of elected voters in each of the 85 ridings. And if they do manage that, then it will be forwarded to a committee which will either send a draft bill to the Legislature for debate or to the Chief Electoral Officer to conduct a

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

referendum. If a change to marijuana possession law were to succeed anywhere in Canada, it should be B.C. But even if Larsen and his allies win, the victory will be non-binding and symbolic – the B.C. Liberals don’t have to support the vote. B.C. may have a permissive pot culture, but this isn’t the U.S., where, for better or worse, voter propositions are binding. And unlike Canadian provinces, states like Washington and Colorado will defy their federal government based on the will of the people. - Campbell River Mirror

Bigger problems in Mission Editor, The Record: Although I have nothing to do with the track, I am thankful that it is in our community and am pretty confident that it helps increase money spent here. I’m sure there are plenty of people that would never come to Mission if it wasn’t for the track. (I know because almost all my relatives cite it’s too far as a reason for why I must go visit them

and not the other way around). Dollars are spent on food and beverages, at the auto-parts stores, for lodging and other things. We really need this cash injection in our community especially when so many of us often have to spend our money in other communities for the things we need/desire. What’s the problem with the noise anyway? It’s far enough away from the majority of

homes, it’s usually only on the weekend and the noise doesn’t go on all night long. There are other problems in

SURPRISE SOMEONE

When was the last time you surprised a friend or family member with something out of the ordinary? Giving someone flowers for no special reason is always a welcome surprise. And, surprising someone doesn’t have to cost a cent. Flowers picked from a field can be just as nice as the ones delivered by a florist. Calling or writing someone you haven’t been in touch with in a long time is another low-cost way to pleasantly surprise someone. In these times of electronic mail and instant messaging, an old-fashioned letter delivered by the mailman can be a wonderful surprise. Baking cookies and bringing them to work to share with co-workers is not only a nice surprise, but also a special way to keep on good terms with those at work. Inviting someone to dinner who wouldn’t otherwise expect it is another good way to surprise someone. And perhaps, the ones who would be most surprised by an act of kindness are not our friends or family, but our enemies.

Food Security: Everyone’s Business We welcome this week’s column from Brenna Maag of the Mission Food Access Network (MFAN). MFAN includes members of local organizations and citizens working towards a healthy, sustainable food future for Mission: Healthy Food for All. MFAN’s goals are to decrease hunger, improve nutritional health and increase local food sustainability in the Mission area. MFAN is supported administratively by L.I.N.C. Society. For more information: www.lincsociety.ca/MFAN or call Brenna at 604-226-1734 Simply put, food security means healthy food for all. Ideally we want our food to be safe from outside circumstances that might put it in danger such as contamination, climate change, peak oil or economic problems. Buying locally grown food supports our local economy and promotes greater accountability for how land is used and how workers are treated. Celebrate B.C. in Mission Two-day festival highlights areas in bloom Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Get to know your community and celebrate your province this weekend during the two-day Catch the Spirit festival, Aug. 4-5. The event is being organized by the local Communities in Bloom Society to introduce residents to the idea that Mission can be blooming, but not just with flowers. Since there isn’t a local or national competition this year, the local group wanted to keep people aware of the purpose, explained event co-chair Heather Stewart. “Also, Mission has not celebrated B.C. Day for many years.” Explore the community with a free tour on day 1. Simply pick up a passport and stop by one or all 10 sites around Mission, where there will be art and craft displays at each site and a chance to

enter to win a $250 shopping spree from Fraser Valley Building Supplies. The sites are: • Silverdale Wetlands. Explore this 46-hectare wetland ecosystem where artists will create their work. • Harris Garden, 32381 Best Ave. Passerby often mistaken this private garden for a park. • Heidi and Scotty’s Garden Railway, 8455 Terris St. This is an award-winning live steam garden railway on three acres of forest and gardens. Train leaves the station on the hour. • Hatzic Friesen/Skerry Garden, 34633 Ferguson St. Explore this tranquil backyard garden designed to attract birds. • Community Soapbox Garden, Leisure Centre Grounds. Learn about raised bed gardening and how to build a root cellar with a liv-

ing roof. You can also try out the compostable toilet. • Rain Garden, corner of Seventh Avenue and Grand Street. The hard work of a dedicated group of volunteers has transformed this former parking lot into an urban oasis of native plants nourished by rainwater collection. • Edwardian Garden/ Historic Mission Mural, Mission Community Archives on Second Ave. Visit Mission’s newest mural with pictures of the past and explore the Edwardian garden at the museum. • Mission Arts Centre, 33529 First Ave. Visit the Rock family gallery, shop in the Weaver’s and Spinners gift shop and enjoy some tea in the Doris Paterson tea room. • Ferncliff Gardens, 8394 McTaggart St. For 93 years the jack family has grown dahlias, iris, day lilies and peonies.

Enjoy the fields of flowers in this garden overlooking the valley and Westminster Abbey. • Fraser River Heritage Park, Mary St. Come for a picnic at the park to celebrate. A catered lunch is available for $15. The prize will be drawn at 1:30 p.m. On Monday, Aug. 5, the festivities will be centred around Mission’s Spirit Square at the Jack Poole Harbourside Park from 12 to 4 p.m. There will be walking tours, safari mini tour ($30), a mini farmers’ market, artists and dancers, face painting, balloons and a barbecue. Communities in Bloom passports are available at Rex Cox Men’s Wear and English Tarts on First Avenue and at City Blends on the Cedar Valley Connector. For more information, visit the Mission Communities in Bloom Facebook page.

Rio Samaya and No Code Blue at park

The Envision Twilight Concert Series continues on Friday, Aug. 2 from 7 to 8 p.m. as the Rio Samaya Band performs in Fraser River Heritage Park. Based in Vancouver, the Rio Samaya Band plays infectious music running the gamut from flamenco to Argentinean folk. They have spent the last several years traveling Canada and the world, joining with local musicians to perform in venues from Beijing to Tunisia. Born in San Jorge, Argentina, Pancho wrote poems from a young age, and moved to Europe to follow his dreams of playing the guitar and sharing his songs with the world. After years of exchange with other musicians, his original music has a wide diversity of styles. Sal compliments Pancho’s guitar with her joyful vocals, accordion, shakers, chachas, bombo and guitar. No Code Blue returns to the concert series at Fraser River Heritage Park on Aug. 7 from 7 to 8 p.m. No Code Blue is a group of six medical

professionals and two businessmen dedicated to enjoying a wide variety of music genres from jazz, rock and roll, funk to country and western. Their schedule is exclusively for fundraising causes such as hospice, wildlife

protection, cancer research and sports. Over the past several years, they have performed for many organizations and worthwhile causes, raising over $200,000 for medical charities and community groups. For information on

the Envision Twilight Concert Series, including the full concert schedule, call the Mission Heritage Association at 604-826-0277, email twilightconcerts. mission@gmail.com or visit heritagepark-mission.ca.

OBITUARIES

Sr. Mary Lucille, SSA was born Marie Sylvia Wrubleski on a farm in Kuroki, Saskatchewan on July 30, 1921. Marie died at Mount St. Mary Hospital on July 23, 2013. Born at home she was the seventh of nine children born to Michael Wrubleski and Apalonia Zgoda. Although her mother died when she was only 10 years old Marie experienced a close knit, loving family that fostered growth in faith. Marie entered the Novitiate of The Sisters of St. Ann on August 20, 1938, in Victoria, B.C. receiving the name Sr. Mary Lucille and pronounced her vows on September 8, 1940. A dedicated teacher Sister Mary Lucille delighted in seeing her students achieve their goals. She taught students from grades one through eight in Victoria, Mission City, New Westminster, Duncan, Kuper Island, Prince George and Vancouver. First Nations children had a special place in her heart and she fostered their education and belief in themselves at the Kuper and Kamloops Indian Residential Schools and for 17 years at St. Mary’s Mission Residential School; she also helped their transition to public schools as a home-school coordinator. In later years, Sister Mary Lucille provided Pastoral Care Ministry at Mount St. Francis in Nelson and in St. James Parish in Vernon. In 2001 she became Coordinator of the Sisters at St. Ann’s Residence in Victoria. Suffering a stroke in 2003 she was a witness to us of patience in suffering and trust in and longing for God. The Sisters are deeply grateful to the staffs of both St. Ann’s Residence and Mount St. Mary Hospital for their attentive care to Marie. Marie is predeceased by her parents and seven siblings. She is survived by her sister Jeanette McKinnon (Stanley-deceased), nephew Allan Ottman and numerous nieces and nephews as well as her own community of The Sisters of St. Ann. Prayers & service have already been held in Victoria, BC this past weekend.

One of Missions finest character homes. This home was built in 1911 according to BC Assessment and has always been in the same family. The outside bricks were transported from Ontario at the builders request and the inside, even though in need of love, has all of the charm. This home could be easily converted back to a full single residence with living area down & bedrooms up. The attic space would make a great studio or bedroom. All this history comes with a large 10370 sq.ft. double lot and a wonderful view!
