Three local boys got the thrill of a lifetime recently when Wayne Grezky showed up to skate with all the participants at the Compete Hockey camp in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho run by world renowned power skating coach Boris Dorozhenko. Bailey Shaw, Darren Petersen and Chase McKay were at the school last month when Grezky, who spends his summers in Coeur D’Alene, showed up in uniform and skates to pick up his son who was participating in the camp. Dorozhenko teaches players the techniques of power skating taught in Europe and according to the school website, some of the best skaters in the National Hockey League were taught the European style of edge control, balance and explosive leg power. “The improvement of the players skating in just five days is unbelievable, I have never seen anything like it,” says Cam Severson, the director of Compete Hockey Schools and Compete Hockey Academy. The Westbridge Airshow was back after a two-year hiatus and judging by the number of people who turned out to watch, it has been missed. The event, sponsored by the Kettle River Model Flyers, was classed as a fun fly, as opposed to a competition. The pilots were there to demonstrate their skills and answer questions from the spectators. The list of aircrafts brought to the field this year included both fixed and rotary wing, two quadcopters, a power launch glider and several paragliders, both motorized and non-motorized. FortisBC locks out employees

In a statement issued late last month by FortisBC, the company said that since January 2013 they have been in bargaining with IBEW 213, the union representing approximately 225 electric employees in various generation, transmission and distribution operations occupations. This includes power line technicians, electricians and system power dispatchers in the B.C. southern Interior. Gas field employees are represented by a different collective agreement and not impacted by this job action. According to the statement the company offered a market competitive increase to wages and no changes to benefits but the union responded with escalating job action. The company says this included employees coming to work and not

completing their full responsibilities. On June 26, citing concerns for public and employee safety and the reliability of electricity service, the company locked the employees out. The company says that the level of labour resources needed to support essential services were negotiated between FortisBC and the union with the assistance of the Labour Relations Board. “Customers will continue to receive electricity service for their home or business, managed through our Essential Services Order, and they can reach us through our contact centre at 1-866436-7847 and through our website, fortisbc.com, which has service updates. Crews will respond to power outages.”

Hair, nail bar now here Ladies, you don’t have to drive to Grand Forks any more if you want to have your beauty needs looked after by Chris Hoefling-Esselink. She’s been providing services every Wednesday at Shear and File Hair and Nail Bar in Greenwood since May. Chris is a licensed cosmetologist and certified nail technician offering a wide variety of salon services. Hair styling for both men and women; and for the ladies she does artificial nails, facial waxing, manicure and pedicure. Her Greenwood hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. “That way clients who are working can still get in after work to get their hair done,” she says. “A lot of people would rather do an evening appointment than one on a Saturday.” The rest of the week Chris runs her own salon in Grand Forks, Oasis Hair and Nail Studio. She’s been offering her services full-time for 14 years now, though she took her first class right after getting out of high school in Midway. She went back to school in 1998 to recertify her license and has been working ever since. The first three years she worked in a home salon, then she opened Oasis Hair and Nail Studio in 2002 and she now owns the building. She said that it took patience to finally find a part-time nail course, but eventually there was one in Kelowna in 2009. Today she is studying for her nail educator certification. She and her husband Sid live in Grand Forks but they hope to eventually make their way to Greenwood. “We’ve been back and forth for years,” she explained. “My dad lives here and I went to high school in Midway. This is home for me.” She opened Shear and File Hair and Nail Bar after a few of her Greenwood customers kept bugging her to open a shop here. “After failing to find a good start-up place I eventually told them if you want me there, you find me the place.” Well, they did! When the laundromat closed earlier this year Chris got a phone call offering her the location. Chris is a firm believer in keeping up with the latest developments in the industry. “I was a color educator for JOICO for two years and worked as a colourist behind the scene at their hair shows.” Her rates are competitive and she guarantees her work.

Global reporting In this era of heightened international investment monitoring, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA has changed how it wants Canadian taxpayers to report foreign assets. This change has been implemented to counter efforts of individuals who are trying to avoid taxes by holding investments outside of Canada. Previously, when taxpayers held assets costing more than $100,000, they were required to disclose on Schedule T1135 what region of the world the assets were held, the amount of total income they earned from all assets overseas and the estimated cost of those assets within five large income groups. Starting this year, if you hold more than $100,000 of assets outside of Canada, you will be required to list each asset, whether it be the specific institution holding the investment, or the description of the land which is held, when filing your 2013 tax return. You must also note the original cost of your asset and the country of your investment’s origin. In addition, the amount of income you earned on each investment must be listed. If you hold an investment or bank account which fluctuates in value during the year, you are now also required to list the highest balance of the investment/account during the year, as well as the value at the end of the year. In some cases, it is possible that the new reporting requirements may allow you to report less information to the CRA. If you receive a T3 or a T5 slip from your international investments, you are now no longer required to report the

investments on Schedule T1135. One thing which has not changed from the previous reporting of these assets is the requirement that you report the cost of the asset, but not the market value of the investment. Therefore, if you purchased an asset which cost $70,000 and is now valued at $150,000 you still do not need to report the asset. In addition, if you co-own an investment with another individual, and the cost for each of you was less than $100,000, you also do not need to report this investment. On the other hand, the CRA will look at the total value of all your international investments to determine if you are required to file a Schedule T1135. If you own one investment which cost $60,000, another investment which cost $50,000, and a bank account holding $500, you have more than $100,000 of total foreign investments and accounts, and you must list all three of these investments and accounts on Schedule T1135. A Schedule T1135 is due on the same date that your tax return is due. It is important to note that there are severe penalties for not filing or late filing this schedule. Riverfest this Saturday

Riverfest is coming to Rock Creek this Saturday at the site of the Rock Creek Market beside Rags, Relics and Rutabagas. There will be events throughout the day, including live music. At 10:30, Oliver resident Dan Skaros will give a presentation on the danger of rattlesnakes – he will be coming with both an aquarium and a rattler. According to Riverfest organizer Pat Pownall, Skaros was bitten last year and he is still suffering from it. “He will have the snake there so people san see what one looks and sounds like.” Local photographer John Hibberson will be bringing what Pownall promises to be an “amazing slideshow” that will run on a 10-minute loop

through the day showcasing his book and pictures of the river that he has taken over the years. Both the book and pictures will be available. BCUC says yes to smart meters FortisBC received approval from the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) last week for their advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) project, also know as smart meters. The BCUC’s issued a 213-page decision on July 23. “We believe advanced meters are an accurate, reliable and safe way to deliver energy,” said FortisBC in a prepared statement. “Advanced meters will provide a range of benefits to our customers, including economic benefits and safety improvements for utility workers, first responders and the general public. Our focus is to deliver energy safely and reliably at the lowest reasonable cost.” The statement said that because of the length of the BCUC decision they were not prepared to commit to the project, but if they decide to proceed they pledge to “work with customers to address concerns they may have, and will provide options for them.” FortisBC gas customers are not affected by this decision, and would not receive advanced meters as part of this project. In an interview with the Kelowna Capital News, Neal Pobran, manager of corporate communications for FortisBC, said customers will

Clinic launches new web site Submitted

The Rock Creek Community Medical Society is pleased to announce the launch of their new web site, www.rockcreekmedical.ca. Inside you will find information about the medical professionals, programs and other activities going on in the clinic building. There are also photos of the building of the Historic Park and the first Canada Day celebration in 2008, and another page showing the recent 2013 July 1st party with lots of great photos of all the community folks who came out to have fun. The site will also have an updated schedule of clinic hours for Dr. Ajaero (GP) and Dr. Simpson (internal medicine specialist) as well as information on the other professionals working out of the medical clinic building including Dr. Tamara Kornelson (chiropractor), Peri Best Kinesiology, Boundary Mental Health Services, CAPC (Community Action Plan for Children), Country Kids

Pre-School, seniors activities and more. The new board of the medical society is currently working on plans to expand programs for children over the coming year, which will include fundraising efforts and grant sourcing. The parking lot will see work this fall to build up and pack the area along with installing concrete guard barriers around the lot for safety, which will make it safer for the short-term while funding is sought to have the area paved, hopefully sometime next year. The new board of directors will continue to work with and utilize all of the local businesses and contractors who have done good work for the society in the past and will continue managing the society and clinic as a stand alone registered non-profit organization. The membership of the society continues to grow and anyone within Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Area E is welcome to join.

Time for action In July the City of Greenwood sent a letter to the owner of dogs that have been the cause of frequent complaint by their neighbours. Quoting from the letter, the mayor said, “We would like to know if you are now in compliance with the city’s zoning bylaw 6873. If you are not, what are your intentions?” The city currently pays for animal control through the regional district but the service has been without an animal control officer since June 1, 2013. So the city may have a valid reason for inaction since June, but as the mayor himself said at last week’s council meeting this recent letter was a follow-up to a letter they had sent last November. That there was six months of inaction should be a bit of an embarrassment, though. After all, taxes were paid and services not delivered. A statement of contrition and pledge to try harder might be in order. Mayor Kettle said that the only way to deal with such complaints right now is by sending letters and he suggested that future letters should set a deadline for coming into compliance or action would be taken. At the same meeting the city voted to send a letter to owners of the Dombrosky property where an uninhabitable fire-damaged building has been a blight on the community for the past 10 years. This isn’t the first time this property has come before council. Looking back through council minutes, a previous council sent letters to the owners and insurers of the Dombrosky property telling them that legal action would be taken if City Hall had not heard from them as soon as possible. The minutes were from January 9, 2006.
