The Gentlemans had been introduced to Douglas on a kiteboarding website.

“When mayor John Douglas was a city councillor, he talked to a local kiteboarder asking ‘why aren’t there more of you here?’,” Gentleman explained.

“He told him to check out

Big Wave Dave’s website so John went on and posted on the forum there asking where are all the kite boarders and windsurfers as there are great winds here.”

The post caught Gentleman’s attention and eventually she and Rob came to Port Alberni and met with Douglas and economic development manager Pat Deakin.

“We moved our life here from Victoria,” Gentleman said.

Mystery of missing gear SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News

A 40-year-old mystery will be solved Thursday morning when city emergency planning co-ordinator Laurie L’Heureux and other personnel reveal a cache of equipment put away following the 1964 tsunami.

“The supplies have been here since the late ‘60s but the location was unknown until a short time ago,” L’Heureux said.

Every couple of months the subject

of the emergency gear would come up, but no one seemed to know where it was stored. It took her six months to track it down, to a storage building in the M’akola Housing development on Eighth Avenue.

The shed is filled with wooden crates, 200 emergency cots, plastic containers labeled “blankets” and first aid equipment, she said.

“We’re going to find some cobwebs and spiders and some

very interesting old stuff.”

On Thursday, L’Heureux, Port Alberni Fire Department and BC Ambulance Service members were going to open the crates to see what exactly has been packed away all these years, and what is still useable.

Preliminary hearing set for Foord case CHRISTOPHER SUN Alberni Valley News

A preliminary hearing date has been set for the Port Alberni man facing 28 charges, including four counts of attempted murder after allegedly running down three people in March.

Travis Douglas Foord, 19, pleaded not guilty to all 28 charges in June.

A trial confirmation date is scheduled

for Nov. 7 and the preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 16. Foord elected for a judge and jury trial.

Foord allegedly drove a truck, with a passenger, into three people on the 2800block of Sixth Avenue after a verbal and physical altercation with one of the victims. Port Alberni RCMP responded to the incident shortly after 1 a.m. on March 30. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

A cause still hasn’t been determined in a fire that gutted part of an apartment on Fourth Avenue between Burde and Bute streets last Friday.

Port Alberni deputy fire chief Chris Jancowski said the fire started in one of the upstairs suites.

The fire was reported at about 9 a.m. and started on the second floor of the eight-unit complex. Beaver Creek and Sproat Lake firefighters also responded to help the Port Alberni crew put out the fire. A second complex beside it was

Building owner Paul Saroya, who is based in Nanaimo, said there were at least seven people living in the building and he has offered empty suites in the neighbouring building to the affected tenants.

Saroya said he was glad to hear that no one was hurt in the fire and was surprised when he got the call that his building was burning.

“It was devastating,” Saroya explained.

“My manager called me and other friends called after. I was shocked that it happened.”

The Kuu-us Crisis Society is accepting donations for the victims of the fire.

Weegar has a specialization in Native studies and played a part in developing a number of programs involving local First Nations.

He spoke proudly of the Bridge to Success program, a partnership with the Tseshaht First Nation to train and provide education upgrades to those interested in working at the mill.

“It makes them more employable with the mills,” Weegar said about the program.

“It’s a bridge to the mill from one side of the river to the other.”

He also put together the construction labour program, which is geared to learners with head injuries and those with fetal alcohol syndrome.

As for the future, Weegar said he’s focused on starting his new position and becoming part of the community that he will soon live in.

A return to B.C. is possible.

“I’m going to see where it takes me,” Weegar said, regarding his work.

“B.C. is closer to the relatives but at this time, the focus is on Cumberland College.”

No holiday for our safety NDP’s soul searching goes nowhere Summer seems to be the season of senseless – and sometimes tragic – accidents.

Just because we’re slowing down to enjoy the season doesn’t mean we can let down our guard when it comes to staying safe.

Traffic may be diminished, but it’s still dangerous.

The water at the swimming hole may be inviting and refreshing, but dangers lurk beneath the surface.

Beers on the back deck or at the campsite are just as intoxicating as those consumed in the pub on a Friday night.

Of course, more people are out and about, enjoying the sunshine and warm temperatures, so the odds are higher that accidents are likely to occur.

But the zeal to get out, to maximize our enjoyment of these rare sunny months before the winter rains and chill settle in again sometimes lead to lapses in judgment.

Seemingly inconsequential acts like leaving a window open, rolling through a stop sign, not looking both ways before crossing a street, or ignoring a prominently-placed warning notice can come with huge consequences.

Sometimes even fatal ones.

British Columbians love the outdoors.

Partly because there’s so much of it at our doorstep and it’s so beautiful. Partly because we spend so much of the year seeking shelter from it when rain and snow fall from the sky.

But no matter where your summer takes you and your family – whether it’s to the beach or the cabin, to any number of vacation destinations, or even if you’re just relaxing at home, just remember to be careful out there.

ICTORIA – B.C. NDP president Moe Sihota says an external review of the party’s performance in the May election will “look very much at the DNA of the NDP.” Early signs are not encouraging. Start with the five-member panel announced to conduct the review. The required “labour” representation is in the person of Cindy Oliver, president of the union representing college and university instructors, and Andy Ross, ex-president of COPE 378, which represents BC Hydro employees among others.

Another appointee is NDP MP Jinny Sims, a former president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. If the party wants to further solidify its image as a lobby group for pension-subsidized government unions, it’s off

to a great start.

The terms of reference defy parody. In addition to unions, the panel required “more than one woman.” A subcommittee may be struck, if it has representation from “youth, women, labour, visible minority, LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisesexual, transgendered, questioning).”

I presume the party’s lengthy antiharassment policy will be read out to begin all meetings.

Once they finally get down to business, the list of election campaign details they must examine is long. In addition to that, they must review “stakeholder relations including community leaders, business, social movement, ethnic communities, environmental movement, affiliated unions and the labour movement.”

One of the excuses offered by leader Adrian Dix for the party’s defeat was the loss of 40,000 jobs in the B.C. forest industry. The suggestion is that those people left for Alberta, and if they were still here, they would have voted NDP. That presumed solidarity has never existed in the private sector, and in fact the highestpaid union workers have good reason to vote for lower taxes.

To confirm B.C. and Canada’s “progressive” tax system, all they have to do is look at their pay stubs.

The mandate for this review mentions not one actual public policy issue.

Here’s one the committee might kick around.

be increased and extended to greenhouse gases produced by industrial process emissions.

A simple example is a cement kiln, which burns fuel to reach the temperature at which the components are partially burned and cement is produced.

Cement manufacturers pay carbon tax on the fuel, whether it’s natural gas or shredded tires, but not on the process.

B.C. cement makers are already pleading for relief, because the fuel-intensive process puts them at a price disadvantage with U.S. and Chinese producers.

Further unilateral tax action by B.C. would only further increase imports, and potentially push B.C. firms out of business.

Goodbye unionized private sector jobs.

Dix’s last foray in question period before the summer legislature session adjourned was a demand for the government to order BC Ferries to build its next three ships in B.C.

Leave aside the NDP’s uncritical zeal for state control, and their ill-fated experiment with aluminum fast ferries.

The most likely bidder for this work is Seaspan, with shipyards in Esquimalt and North Vancouver.

Seaspan is hiring almost 2,000 people to build ships for the Royal Canadian Navy and Coast Guard.

It will be flat out to get those projects done, and the company president

can’t yet say if it has the capacity and skilled labour to bid on BC Ferries ships too.

Seaspan has to operate in the real world of limited resources.

So does the NDP, but it’s not clear if they can find a way out of their thicket of special interests and stale economic notions.

Mailbag: Feedback on news items Logging’s out for logging To the Editor,

Re: city visits watershed logging operation of TimberWest.

Logging in the Bainbridge Watershed.

The source of drinking water for the City of Port Alberni.

TimberWest representatives claim that they hire independent firms to audit their operations and they adhere to provincially set regulations. That it is in their best interest.

Logging in a watershed only looks at the interests of this forest company and the bottom line, the dollar. Their statements that what they are doing here has no direct impact to the water system are totally ridiculous.

‘Lab rate’ label hurts writer To the Editor,

Re: Red Cross not part of experiments, July 25.

Being compared to a lab rat is hurtful.

Discovering that we were deliberately starved as children in residential school raises strong emotions; sadness,

anger and frustration added to the fact that we were little children who could do nothing but endure.

The news story of July 18, brought back memories – deeply buried – accompanied by a sense of desperate sadness as I re-experienced what I did to try to make my hunger go away.

The most desperate act was to pick up old, dry plants and peel the outside bark to eat the softer, inner part as we were on Sunday afternoon walks, being herded like cattle in the field around the Anglican church.

Is it any wonder that a knee infection would not heal and I was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where I had nightmares due to hospital staff coming to the door of my room to look at the kid whose head was wrapped in a towel, being deloused?

In spite of the fact that an apple orchard existed beside the girls’ playground, we were forbidden to go over the fence to get any apples.

Sometimes when no one was watching, a girls would crawl under the fence and quickly toss the apples to us. If caught, we had to give the apples back.

In Port Alberni, a few days after the story broke in the news about this “nutrition experiment,” I had a heated discussion with someone who proceeded to describe how aboriginals don’t know how to work and expect everything to be handed to them.

I was fortunate to have another female residential school survivor back me up, while other people observed.

During the discussion, a nonnative male silently moved closer to us two women. His nonverbal message did not go unnoticed by the group. I appreciate the compassion that he silently demonstrated.

Electric car benefits bogus To the Editor, Bjorn Lomborg, renowned author of ‘The skeptical Environmentalist’ and ‘Cool it’ reveals “green” cars have a dirty little secret.

Electric cars don’t emit CO2 on the road but the energy used for their manufacture and battery-charges far negates any benefits.

Yet another study

confirms what has been long known as a 2012 life-cycle analysis in Journal of Industrial Ecology shows that almost 50 per cent of the lifetime CO2 emissions come from the energy used to produce the electric car, especially the battery. Compare that to the manufacture of a gas-powered car at 17 per cent of it’s lifetime CO2 emissions.

The electric car fresh off the production line has already used up the equivalent of 80,000 miles (128,700 km) of travel emissions, more than twice that of the gas car.

The report concludes, as a way to tackle global warming the electric car does virtually nothing and the government subsidies are a very poor deal for taxpayers.

Our BC Liberals ignore the real science and continue to buy elite votes with our taxdollars as they subsidize each new hybrid/electric $5,000 plus $500 to install a charging station at home.

Without subsidies electric vehicles would not be selling on their own merits as they are inefficient

in cold Canadian winters. Instead of $40,000 for a Chevy Volt Hybrid, a $20,000 regular gas car will get better mileage.

People who purchase elec/ hybrids are higher income earners, so through taxes, it’s the struggling lower income class subsidizing the more affluent class.

The market is the best judge whether gas, diesel, electric, hybrid cars are used, not the government trying to pick winners and losers with no regard for our taxdollars.

Help fight against TB To the Editor,

This year the Global Fund to Fight HIV, TB, and Malaria is slated for replenishment, requiring 15 billion dollars to reach its goal of treating 80 per cent of the world’s tuberculosis sufferers.

Canada’s share would be $750 million spread over three years. We can spend the money now and prevent the next infectious plague, or wait until it’s too late and the cost much, much higher.

Since most of the

general population sit for longer periods of time than moving around during the day, sedentarism can be a common health risk in our society. Sedentarism refers to many of the activities commonly associated with the word sedentary, for

instance, sitting, lying down, sleeping/ napping, and other various actions that are performed in a state of low energy expenditure for extended periods of time.

Common daily activities, such as watching TV, sitting

at a desk, napping, working on a computer, ‘relaxing’ in an arm chair or couch, driving and sitting in a vehicle all contribute to a sedentary lifestyle.

This can all lead to the growing obesity problem and is a big factor for developing medical problems.

Research indicates that there is no real acceptable amount of prolonged physical inactivity because health consequences develop quickly.

Sedentarism is a different issue than lack of dedicated exercise. It is not avoided by meeting exercise guidelines, since excessive sitting time can counteract the benefits of good exercise and actually worsen overall health.

Liquor store move questioned Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

A proposed move of a liquor store licence from the former Somass Hotel to a location along the Alberni Highway in Cherry Creek is facing resistance from at least one Port Alberni city councillor.

ABC liquor store licence owner Andrew Hanson has asked

the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District board, in a letter, to rezone the property at 2970 Alberni Highway, near Athol Road, from C4 highway commercial to C2 general commercial, to allow a liquor store. A blueberry stand is currently stationed outside the vacant building on the property, which also has a house and nine-

stall parking lot.

However, Coun.

Cindy Solda said there are enough liquor stores in the community and there are enough on Johnston Road, which carries most of the tourist traffic in and out of the community.

“How many liquor stores do we need?”

Solda asked. “It’s a smart move on their part. That particular

space will catch people coming into the community first.”

The location was also an issue for Electoral Area ‘B’ director Mike Kokura.

“Did anybody give consideration to the fact that is going to be the first liquor store [tourists] are going to see when they head in?” Kokura said during last Wednesday’s ACRD meeting. “It’s going to be on the left hand side on a very busy road.”

The property is located in Cherry Creek so the City of

Port Alberni does not have a final say in the matter. However, the ACRD is referring the matter to the city for input.

Calls to Hanson for comment were not returned. Hanson, who refers to himself as an agent in the ACRD application, is also in the process of transferring ownership of the liquor licence. He indicated in his letter that the applicants, Jim and Darlene Lane have operated the only private liquor store in Ucluelet for the last seven years

and they have 20 years of experience working in the liquor business.

He also acknowledged that the location is one of the first things people will see when entering the Alberni Valley and that there are plans to have an attractive building.

A decision is expected in late August or early September after input from various stakeholders, such as the city, is received and a public hearing is held. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Since moving here, Gentleman has been working hard at making Port Alberni a wind and watersport destination, and spent countless of hours cleaning and creating Canal Beach, which is a name she created.

“We couldn’t call it the ‘Old Plywood Mill Site Beach,’” Gentleman laughed.

“I just picked the name because it’s the Alberni canal and it’s a beach on the canal.”

Gentleman envisions that the area will become a popular spot for non-motorized watersports with rentals for stand-up paddleboarding, wind and kitesurfing, canoeing, kayaking and for swimmers.

“This is just a tip of the iceberg of what can happen here in the future,” Gentleman said, adding that she has heard from a lot of people from Squamish who love the warm water here.

“The mayor said he would like to see this become a hub, kind of like Jericho [beach in Vancouver].”

Canal Beach is currently closed to the public as the city continues working on the site. The road into the area is also shared with neighbouring industry.

However, Port Alberni’s parks and recreation department will be hosting the Mobile Optimist Sailing School for children at Canal Beach in August..

A movie night is also being planned for later in the summer.

Athletic hall installing new lift CHRISTOPHER SUN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Port Alberni Athletic Hall will be more accessible with the installation of a new wheelchair lift, but the volunteer driven organization is short $5,000 to pay for it.

Athletic Hall president Larry Spencer said it took two-and-half years for the organization to raise $35,000 towards the $40,000 cost to install the lift, which will bring people from the lower lobby to the upper lobby inside the

hall.

The hall was built in 2010 after a fire destroyed the previous building, which was located on Beaver Creek Road.

“We finally have [most] of the money,” Spencer said, explaining there was no money to install a lift when the building was being built.

“We still need about $5,000 to $6,000, but we ordered it anyway because we feel with our rentals, we will get the amount. We’re still trying to get donations though.”

The lift was

ordered last week and Spencer expects it will be installed and operational by October. He thanked the community for both donating funds and renting the facility. Once the lift is installed, Spencer said the hall will focus on raising enough money to install electric signage, similar to the one outside the high school, and then do some paving.

However, money needs to be saved up before the hall makes further investments.

“We don’t want to spend money we don’t

have, like putting it on credit,” Spencer said. “We wait and purchase what we need once we can afford it.”

Currently the hall is being used as a dormitory for the annual West Coast Hockey Prep Camp.

The Port Alberni Athletic Association was formed in 1931.

The first athletic hall was built in 1925 and replaced in 1958. The second hall burned down in 2009 and the current hall, which was moved, was built in 2010. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

FERRIER, DAVID CHARLES

NOVEMBER 29,1918 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; JULY 28, 2013 After a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by family and friends, Dave passed away in his home in Port Alberni on July 28th, 2013.

Dave was predeceased by his parents, David and Lily Ferrier, wife, Esther, and granddaughter, Tara Mooney; he is survived by his daughters, Margaret McMaster and Kathy Mooney (Dennis Craig); grandsons Colin McMaster (Brigette), and Chris Mooney (Stefanie); great grandchildren David and Lorissa McMaster, and Dallas Mooney; and his friend and companion, Donna Duncan.

Born in England, November 29th 1918, Dave first came to Alberni with his mother and father in 1919. He began his schooling in Alberni, and when he was 8, the family moved to a farm in Hilliers. He often reminisced about helping his dad to clear the fields of rocks and stumps and how, together, they hand-dug the long, long, drainage ditch across the full width of the property. When he was 15, they moved back to England so Dave could begin an apprenticeship.

In WWII, Dave served as a Canadian in the British Royal Navy. During the war, he married Esther, and in 1951, he came back to Alberni bringing with him his wife and 8 year old daughter, Margaret; in 1957, another daughter, Kathy, was born. Dave worked in the Plywood Mill until his retirement in 1980 when he moved out to an acreage on the Stamp River. Dave always loved a good game of cards, and was an avid gardener and fisherman his entire life. He was a life-time member of the Sunshine Club, and belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion.

The family thanks Dr. Brown, the Victoria Cancer Clinic staff, Port Alberniâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community Care staff, and all those involved in the Palliative Support Services who gave him such good care. Many thanks also to those good friends who provided comfort and help throughout Daveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last weeks.

A memorial tea will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Victoria Quay, from 2 to 4 p. m., Friday, August 2nd 2013.

DARLENE ALCOCK January 2, 1943 - July 27, 2013 After a long struggle with illness, we are saddened to announce the passing of Darlene Alcock on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the age of 70 yrs. She is predeceased by her parents Charles and Muriel Alcock, and notably her son Dean Miller in 1986. Darlene is survived by her daughters Evelyn (Gary) Davidson, Kathy (Pierre) Miller, Penny (Mike) Parcher, and Laura (Darren) Brown, her 17 grandchildren Jim, Crystal, Trish, Cathy, Rick, Ken, Brandy, Kelly, Kristine, Whitney, Jessica, Carli, Steven, Terry, Serena, Kyle and Kira. Darlene is also survived by 18 great grandchildren, her brothers Ben (Judy) Alcock and Bill Alcock, and her sister Nola (John) VanApeldorn.

Darlene had worked as a long term care aid and enjoyed many hobbies including knitting, candy making, ceramics, painting and ďŹ shing.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Chapel of Memories Funeral Home on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at 2PM. Cremation has taken place and Darleneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s urn will be buried with her son Dean in the Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Proteau also finished tied for 31st at the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship, held concurrently at Club de golf Beloeil in Beloeil, Que. The event wrapped up July 26.

This was Proteau’s third consecutive Canadian Mid Amateur title; she also won it in 2009.

(Another Port Alberni golfer, Jackie Little, has also won this title, giving Port Alberni some pretty impressive golf bragging rights.)

The Mid Amateur is for golfers 25 years and older.

“The winner (of the Canadian Amateur) was actually 15 years old and is on the Canadian team,” said Proteau, who turned 30 this year.

working world for five years I enjoy even more seeing if I can still hang in there with the college players. And I can,” she said.

Proteau said the field of 147 was tough, especially given there were 53 international players competing. “It’s so

different from when I was in college 10 years ago,” she said.

“If there were two or three international players they stuck out.”

Proteau led the first two days by two shots. She had a tough final round on Friday, but says her experience and maturity helped her pull out a win on the back nine. On hole No. 8 she hit a shot out of the trees, and used her five-wood to hit the green 230 yards away, but “I didn’t have my A-game on the back nine.”

Proteau finished with a fourover-75 to finish at 16-over 300 for the tourney, seven strokes ahead of runner-up Stefi Markovich, 38, of Welland, Ont. The win gives Proteau an exemption into next year’s Canadian amateur championship.

Three Port Alberni track and field athletes are headed to the 37th annual Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in Langley, Aug. 9–11 at McLeod Athletic Park.

Thompson Weegar, Rylee Mitchell and Nikeisha Dass all met competition standards to advance to the nationals.

“This will be the first time for all three of these athletes to go to the nationals,” Alberni Valley Track and Field Club president Michelle Butt said.

Weegar and Mitchell travelled to Kamloops July 19–21 to the B.C. track and field championships, where

Weegar placed first in discus, second in 300-metre (setting a new personal best of 37.9 seconds), second in 200m and fourth in the 100m, and was successful in making Team BC, Butt said.

Mitchell finished first in javelin and third in 800m with a personal best of 2.06.66. Mitchell will

compete in the javelin, 800m and 300m events at the nationals.

Weegar will compete in discus, 100m, 200m and possibly on a 4x100m relay team.

Dass did not attend the B.C. championships, but she had already met the standard to compete in javelin.

Port Alberni carver Gordon Dick works on ‘Focus on Balance,’ a public art piece he created during an international carving symposium in Germany in June.

Dick invited to German symposium Three years ago a wood carver, Thorsten Schutt, saw Gordon Carving a pole in front of Dick’s gallery, Ahtsik Native Art Gallery on Pacific Rim Highway.

Schutt was excited to stop and watch Dick carve, and shared that he is an artist from Northern Germany who organizes carving symposiums every three years.

After viewing the book of the pole Dick carved to acknowledge residential school survivors, Schutt invited Dick to participate in the next symposium, held in June 2013.

“Schutt only invites people he meets on his journeys to

participate in the symposium,” says Dick.

There were six carvers, three from various parts of Germany and one from Italy, one from Turkey and Dick from Canada. The artists had nine days to carve a public art piece that would stay in the community on permanent loan.

The logs provided were oak and various sizes. It was Dick’s first time carving an oak log. “Oak is a much harder wood to carve than the traditional red and yellow cedar used in northwest coast art,” he said.

The public art piece Dick carved is entitled, ”Focus on

Balance”. The oak log balances on a large stone. On the right is a northwest coast star symbolizing the four directions and the four seasons.

“The carving was made to remind us to focus on balance and pay attention to Mother Nature,” Dick said.

“Everything is connected: the rain that falls, the trees that clean the air, the roots, soil and stones that filter the water. This carving just shows a small part of the cycle of all of Mother Nature’s connection.

“The eggs as they are growing, and then maturing into a salmon. We need to keep the balance

so the cycle keeps moving. If the balance is interrupted too much it will cease to exist. Therefore, the black shows a fossilized salmon on the left of the carving.

If we do not pay attention, that is all that will remain,” he said.

Dick appreciated the opportunity to attend the international carving symposium in Germany.

“It was a great opportunity to meet other artists and travel to a different part to the world,” he said.

Dick can often be seen carving in the shed in front of Ahtsik Gallery. His hours of operation are 10:30 am to 5 pm.
