the subjects in the following pages.
The first voices many of us here in the morning are those of Jayne Garry and Wayne Kelly from EZ Rock. The popular duo have been entertaining Greater Trail listeners for the last eight years.
Our goal was to capture moments of the day in and
around Trail in hopes that we see a bit of ourselves in some of these photos as people go about their everyday chores, treats and recreation. With that in mind we dispatched four photographers – editor Guy Bertrand, news reporters Val Rossi and Sheri Regnier, and sports editor Jim Bailey – over the course of 16 hours on July 19. Getting a broad range of photos from one single day was no easy task. We sat down and plotted out our day with one photographer capturing the early risers who are at work, exercising or out and about long before most of us hit the snooze button. Another photographer tackled the hectic late-morning/early-afternoon shift that featured everything from having lunch to shopping at the market to taking a break from a busy day. However, to truly capture a day in the life of our area, we had two photographers roaming popular recreation spots and backyards that are so vital to a great day in

One of Victoria Gladue’s first duties as a lifeguard at the Trail Aquatic Centre is to check the safety equipment, including oxygen tanks.
Be it fishing in a quiet creek or admiring the blooming flowers in a backyard, Kootenay people know the best way to spend a day is doing something you love. And if it happens to be outside, that’s even better. That's why there are as many photos of people at play as there are people at work. Because if there's one thing for sure in our region, a day in the life often includes a bit of work and a bit of play. Anything less wouldn't be a complete day. We hope you enjoy our whirlwind efforts. I know we sure enjoyed bringing it all together.

Day to day life at Teck Trail Operations Safety, Environment and New Technology
At Teck Trail Operations, our first priority is everyone going home safe and healthy every day. Safety is incorporated into our daily routine through our Courageous Safety Leadership program, Field Level Risk Assessments, and Hazard Risk Assessments before each job. One of Trail Operations’ legacies is the long-term commitment of employees, who bring a wealth of skills and experience passed from employee to employee and through generations. This employee photo includes two fathers and sons; a father, mother and daughter; a stepfather, stepdaughter and brother/uncle; and a husband and wife. From left, back row: Thera Bilenki, Management Systems Coordinator; Trevor Prior, Protective Services Officer; Sana Waseem, Union Casual; David Shannon, Machinist; Mario Vellutini, Retiree and Tour Guide; Garry Gawryletz, Superintendent, Environmental Management; Waseem Saeed, Business Superintendent, Fertilizer and Sulphur Products; Jim Shrubsole, Retiree and Tour Guide; John Shannon, Custodian; Thomas Hodgson, Machinist. Seated: Jessica Prior, Accounting Clerk, Financial Reporting; Brett Gawryletz, Operator, Lead Furnaces; Saman Waseem, Cost Analyst Production; and Bob Hodgson, Production Superintendent, Lead Refinery/ Silver Refinery. The No. 1 Acid Plant is currently under construction to improve efficiency and environmental performance at Trail Operations. A key stage of our zinc and fertilizer production process, the new acid plant will replace two older ones. The upgraded technology will significantly improve operating reliability and flexibility, and reduce downtime and maintenance costs. The new plant will improve environmental performance at Teck Trail Operations through an estimated reduction in total SO2 emissions of between 10 and 15 per cent per year from current levels. Construction began in the spring of 2012, and the plant is planned to become operational in the spring of 2014. Engineering and civil construction are now complete, and the second phase of mechanical and process equipment construction is now underway.
Environmental protection and remediation is part of the day to day life of many Trail employees. Superintendent of Ecosystems Projects David DeRosa displays one of many Columbia Spotted Frogs that reside on Teck property in the Oasis wetlands, along Highway 22.
