Naden Band, naval tours boost nautical content There’s more Nautical in Nautical Days for 2013. In addition to returning crowd favourites Build, Bail and Sail, the Bullhead Derby and Victor Simonson Dragon Boat Races, festival-goers will also have opportunities to tour ORCA Class naval vessels, watch an open-water search-andrescue demonstration by the Royal Canadian Air Force and enjoy the big band performance of the Canadian Navy Band — the Naden Band. This year, the 442 Search and Rescue Squadron from 19 Wing Comox will stage a special search and rescue demonstration on Saturday, Aug. 3 at approximately 4:30 p.m. in Comox Harbour. Festival-goers can get a front-row seat for this one from the wharf. Also on Aug. 3 , the Naden Band will perform. The Naden Band is Canada’s navy band on the West Coast. This multi-faceted ensemble of 35 professional musicians are ambassadors of national pride and goodwill. Performing throughout Canada, this is their first appearance at Comox Nautical Days. There are two performances Aug. 3. The first, by the Naden Band’s Undercurrent ensemble at 2 p.m., will include everything from

The ever-popular Nautical Days children’s Bullhead Derby is sure to bring in lots of kids and some big bullheads. The Bullhead Derby is the largest catch-and-release event of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. Last year’s derby drew many young and young-atheart participants angling for top honours in categories ranging from largest fish to strangest catch. Participants supply their fishing pole, barbless hooks and bait, while Nautical Days provides the jovial spirit of friendly competition. The annual event begins Saturday, Aug. 3 at 8:30 a.m. at the government wharf. The adventure for the bullhead derby, though, isn’t

the oddest fish. There are always interesting finds including a variety of sea creatures, such as colourful starfish and crabs, and interesting ‘treasures’ dropped by the people above. There have been tires, boots and other surprising finds as part of the morning’s catch. While other sea creatures are returned to the

water, and junk is properly disposed of— bullhead, gunnel, greenling, flatfish or perch are brought to the official sponsors’ station in a provided plastic bag filled with seawater so they can be measured, recorded and then released. Following the derby, a special mainstage presentation will be held at noon to celebrate the annual event. Prizes will be handed out for

various categories. Registration for the bullhead derby takes place at the check-in booth at Marina Park. Participants can speed up the line by filling out the form on page 9 of this special section. the Royal Canadian Navy is Canada’s Navy band on the West Coast. This multi-faceted ensemble of 35 professional musicians are ambassadors of national pride and goodwill. The Naden Band performs throughout Canada and abroad. Annie Handley (with Doug Biggs and Band) Performance Saturday, August 3 @ 3:00 pm Annie Handley, a singer/ songwriter from Vancouver Island, reached success a few years ago on YouTube, yielding an international acclaim. With stirring lyrics, a mesmerizing voice that also wields a rock edge, Annie has interwoven these talents with a lifetime of composing music and live performances to produce the long-awaited debut CD No Shoobie, which was named as a Top Pick on Canada’s iTunes. Steve Elliott — Elvis Elite

Performances Sunday, August 4 @ 12:30 p.m., Monday, August 5 @ 3:00 pm & 9:00 pm Steve has been a performer since 2000 and has won various Elvis contests throughout Canada Including the Grand Canadian Championship of the Pacific Northwest Elvis Festival 2004 in Penticton. He now travels full time with his Elvis Elite show throughout Canada and the USA. With authentic costumes, the Elvis Elite show brings a fresh and thrilling experience to the greatest and most universal performer that ever lived! Steve will make sure that you see and hear something original in every performance he gives. Big Fun Performance Sunday, August 4 @ 6:30 pm Big Fun puts on a great show full of personality. Beltin’ tunes out from Don Henley, ACDC, Burton Cummings, and many, many more. Big Fun features John

Mundy on vocals and electric guitar, Barry Polichek on vocals and bass, Rob Petrie on vocals and keyboards, and Bob Johnstone on lead vocals and drums. Los Chiwahwahs Performance Monday, August 5 @ 1:30 pm Los Chiwahwahs are not your typical rock band. Most of their songs are sung in Spanish and congas play an important part in their rhythms. Because the music has some definite Latin groove to it, you may find yourself at times dancing Cumbia, or Salsa-stepping. Music on the Move Throughout the weekend, buskers and fiddlers will play Comox Avenue and Marina Park at various times and locations. Summer Concert Series

Record Staff Sinking, swimming or staying afloat will likely be a few of the outcomes of the annual Build Bail & Sail this B.C. Day. The Comox Harbour has been the site of floundering contestants every B.C. Day since the 1980s, and this year is sure to be another hit with participants and spectators alike. Two-pirate teams create their ‘Titanics’ on a fixed budget, with material donated by Central Builders. On race day (Monday, Aug. 5) they have a few hours — starting at 9 a.m. — to build their vessel using only hand tools under the critical eye of many curious onlookers. Spectators have included curious locals as well as tourists from all over the world. Contestants are from

Then it’s down to the marina ramp to launch their — hopefully — seaworthy creations at 1 p.m. and try to navigate the water course. One of the trickiest parts

of the race can be the seat swap at the halfway mark, which makes for some funky manoeuvres, but even the most seasoned sailors can take a tumble from their boats. Central Builders sponsors Build, Bail & Sail.
