Tunnel replacement a tough sell for Delta

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson faces an uphill battle convincing other regional politicians of the need to replace the George Massey Tunnel. Jackson last year persuaded the province to start studying options for a new crossing of the Fraser River to relieve congestion on Highway 99 through Delta. But several other members of Metro Vancouver’s transportation committee questioned the justification for the project July 23. ❙ See story, A3

Support swings in favour of Southlands The Southlands development proposal is slated to come before council for first and second reading on Monday, July 29, just as public correspondence on the project indicates a significant swing in support. According to the Corporation of Delta, correspondence received on the project between Nov. 17, 2012 and June 14, 2013 shows 51 per cent of people are in favour, while 41 per cent are still opposed.
