“I am forced to take this step because the SRD board and its committee have sullied the process by inferring Klahoose First Nation would use intimidation and coercion to sway public opinion should the meetings be held at the multi-purpose centre.

“Consequently, the actions of the SRD have made a mockery of this application. If the board so chooses to make itself look ridiculous, we cannot stop you. However, we will not stand by you or validate this process any longer.”

Delorme was referring to the board’s decision to decline the Klahoose’s offer to hold the public

hearing at the Klahoose multi-purpose centre and instead chose the Gorge Hall, a site directors deemed neutral, not in the applicant’s territory.

Area D director Brenda Leigh and Area A director Gerald Whalley referenced letters the board received from people intending to speak at the public hearing, but felt they may be inhibited while in the Klahoose community.

Leigh also wanted a neutral site to prevent bias and avoid any unnecessary pressure on directors.

The board went even further to avoid the perception of bias when it removed Cortes Director Noba Anderson as chair of the public hearing.

That disappointed Delorme even further.

“The removal of chair from the process simply because she expressed an understanding of the nation’s frustration with the actions of the SRD leads us to believe that there is a faction within the SRD that is pushing this process toward a pre-determined decision that is not favourable to the interests of the Klahoose First Nation or Klahoose Resort Limited Partnership,” Delorme wrote.

“Additionally, this highly unusual step leaves one with the impression that Klahoose were peddling influence or engaging the chair in an unprofessional manner. I am extremely angry about this.”

Cortes resident Lovena Harvey attended Wednesday’s public hearing, but left as soon

as she had her chance to speak, in a show of support for Klahoose.

“My faith in the SRD board has been severely damaged due to this rezoning application,” Harvey wrote.

“How can you call a meeting fair and unbiased when the applicant is not present, when no one representing the Klahoose First Nation spoke directly?”

The next step for the board will be to consider third reading of the rezoning at a future board meeting, likely on Aug. 7.

Business owners packed council chambers Tuesday night to oppose the city’s proposal to ban shipping containers from commercial and residential properties.

S e ve nt e e n p e opl e spoke at the public hearing which addressed the proposed bylaw to restrict shipping containers to industrial zoned property only. There

would be some flexibility in that containers could be placed on any lot for up to 30 days per calendar year, which could be extended to 90 with an application to the city.

The bylaw would also allow containers to be temporarily used on construction sites.

Ross Blackwell, the city’s land use manager, said the draft bylaw was, “generated in response to on-going complaints from the general public

about the visual impact of these industrial structures in residential and commercial areas.”

Most B.C. communities have restrictions on the use of the containers, but not in Campbell River. Several business owners are taking exception to the bylaw.

Ted Arbour, owner of Eco Ezy Box Storage, said he agrees with limited use of containers on small, residential properties, but taking them

away from businesses which have been using them for years is wrong.

“As always, the commercial or business properties in Campbell River will have to take the brunt of the financial end,” Arbour said.

“Campbell River is far from being back on its feet business wise and now getting hit with this.”

Chris Osborne, city planner, wrote in a report to council that some

businesses are using the containers to avoid the cost of building a proper storage shed.

“Businesses are generally turning to their use out of convenience and relatively low cost, in addition to efforts to avoid development permits, works and services and development cost charges.”

Har vey Hiquebran said the use of containers does keep costs down and should be permitted

as long as they’re aesthetically pleasing and hidden behind the building.

“Every small business is hanging on by its teeth. You’ve been gradually squeezing the ball tighter and tighter,” he said. “A container comes in and it’s very helpful. You can put up a container behind your building and use it as storage. They’re fire proof and have a considerable savings. I agree you shouldn’t have one in

your front yard, but if a guy wants to have one at the back of his business, why can’t he? Fence it in, it looks great.”

Kermit Dahl, owner of Associated Tired, is one of those business owners who has a container behind his store. Space is tight and he uses his container to store customers’ tires for them.

Dahl asked Coun. Ron Kerr, who has the Campbellton portfolio, if he’s ever noticed his container. Kerr admitted he had not.

Steve Daigle of Daigle Welding and Marine said he uses sea cans to store dangerous goods, including flammable material that is not legally allowed to be stored inside.

“We have no room on our lot to build a fire-

proof building away from our building,” said Daigle who added he would be happy to move the containers out of sight. “I would have no problem moving my sea containers to the back of my property.”

Others spoke about the security these containers provide and how costly it would be to take them away after spending several thousands of dollars to secure them, paint them and in some cases, add electrical.

Alan Edie, owner of Campbell River Common mall, was the only

voice in favour of the bylaw.

“This specific bylaw I believe is common sense versus some of the monopolies that have tended to exist and also the old school business practices of this town,” Edie said. “This bylaw is straight u. It’s long overdue. Granted not every sea can is aesthetically ugly but if you went around the town and took pictures, there’s some strategically placed on your most busy street corners – is that good common sense? Probably not.”

Edie said it’s discouraging to see containers on the corner of the roadway into world-famous fishing resort Painter’s Lodge and on the corner of the highway towards Gold River.

“They’re abusing your leniency,” said Edie, referring to Campbell River’s lack of container restrictions. “It’s disgusting.”

One woman also spoke up to defend shipping containers on her residential lot.

Sandy Green – who said her containers are not visible from the road but are behind her home along the lane behind 6th Ave. – said when she purchased the sea cans the city told her they were acceptable.

“It really does upset me

because I have invested a lot of time and money and they’re not an eyesore,” she said. “I’ve colour-coded them to my home…had a roof built over them. It’s been very expensive. I’ve got them insulated, as well there’s electrical in them.”

Most people would describe a highway as a stretch of lined pavement that is meant to drive vehicles on, especially outside of municipal areas. This is a highway, but it is only a narrow part of the whole definition. The Transportation Act describes a highway, and the Motor Vehicle Act includes that description and expands it.

The Transportation Act defines a highway as all public streets, roads, ways, trails, lanes, bridges, trestles, ferry landings and approaches, and any other public way. “Any other public way” can include almost anything, even a footpath in some cases. Webster’s dictionary defines public as being “for the use and benefit of all.”

The Motor Vehicle Act defines a highway as every highway within the meaning of the Transportation Act, and every road, street, lane, or right of way designed or intended for or used by the public for the passage of vehicles, and includes every private place or passageway to which the public has access or is invited to park or service vehicles.

It is clear that many places can be a highway. Great care must be taken by those who operate motor vehicles that are not licensed and insured, because they cannot be legally operated on a highway. Even coasting vehicles that are not running may be considered operating them.

“We spent a considerable amount of time, energy and talent if I may say, to get this presentation to this point and unbeknown to myself and my client, we’re short, let’s say, numbers in the vote,” Miles said.

“We’re a little afraid to ask for a vote in case it does go in the wrong direction and we wouldn’t be able to come back for at least six months. I’m not a gambling person. I want to make sure this project keeps on going.”

The architect of the proposed apartment building with a liquor store below took the unusual step of asking council to delay voting on the fate of the development.

Curtis Miles was ready to go at Tuesday’s council meeting with his presentation for a major development permit only to find, much to his dismay, that two councillors – Andy Adams and Claire Moglove – were not in attendance at the

zoning application for the project passed during a council meeting in May, but Samson, Kerr and Jakeway were all opposed. Adams and Moglove voted in favour, and Adams even praised the development.

“I think given the situation and the uncertainty and the danger that a vote could do to this project – we’re ready to go, we want to start construction, we need to get started – I’d be really afraid to face my client if this vote didn’t go properly tonight.

“With respect, I think I’m going to hold back the birth of the baby for another three weeks.”

The “baby” is a fivestorey apartment at 1054 S. Island Highway.

The application has been questioned because the lot is limited in terms of how much can be developed due to the slope in the back of the lot and residents of the complex would have to park in a space designated for them on the Big Rock Motel lot, which is also owned by the applicant.

The developer, Derik Pallan, wants to use the building as a retaining structure at the toe of the slope and have access to the apartments at the side and back of the building.

The liquor store would face Highway 19A and have parking in the front. It’s proposed that the new building would not have its own access, instead motorists would enter from the entrance to the Big Rock Motel.

Campbell River has an image problem, according to the governor of the Campbell River Storm, who wants to partner with the city to change that perception.

Wes Roed, governor of the Storm Junior B hockey team, and Storm co-owner Kevin Spooner, approached council for the first time in the team’s history at Tuesday night’s council meeting to ask for the city’s help.

“I believe it’s the first time in the history of the team, which is come into its 15th year, that anyone has come here on behalf of the team and made a presentation to council,” Roed said. “What we are proposing to you is a partnership that will not only keep this team in a state of viability but also to promote a great community.”

Roed said the Storm does work to sell Campbell River, but there are challenges when it comes to recruiting players to re-locate here.

“Unfortunately Campbell River has an image problem and it might be

a problem that you’re not even aware of,” Roed told council. “Recruiting can be difficult at the best of times and when we’re trying to get some players to come here, at the first reference to Campbell River, their immediate reaction is it’s some hole hidden away, that they want nothing to do with.

“You and I know differently and when they (the players) arrive they soon realize they were misinformed. It’s an image problem that we want to do our best to mitigate.”

Roed said since Kevin and Linda Spooner b ou g ht t h e St or m roughly two-and-a-half years ago, the staff has worked hard to showcase the community.

Those efforts include a portal that’s expected to launch in six weeks and will be attached to the City of Campbell River’s website.

As well, all of the Storm’s games this season will be streamed over the Internet. Roed said through those feeds is an opportunity to promote Campbell River pre-game, in-game and post-game.

But Roed said the Storm want the city to get on board.

“What we’re asking for is a $15,000 commitment from the city to promote our town, our team,” he said. “That slogan, ‘our town, our team’, will be prominent at centre ice, it will be encircling our logo and we would love to have the logo of the City of Campbell River there as well.”

Roed said the team would also like to reward those who contribute to the city by giving away hockey tickets to public safety officers such as the RCMP and firefighters as well as someone who has been caught doing a

good deed or someone who would like to go to a game but cannot afford to.

Above all, Roed would like to change the perception of Campbell River.

“As long as Kevin (Spooner’s) been at the helm, we’ve been promoting Campbell River as not only a great place to play, but a great place to live and this is an important aspect when we’re trying to recruit

layers,” Roed said. “It’s important to the players themselves but more to their parents, to their families, knowing this is a place where they’ve entrusted their children into our care, that it is a great community.

“We promote this town and we don’t feel that it’s shallow or it’s hollow,” Roed added. “We feel it’s incumbent upon everyone…we have an obligation and responsibility to promote Campbell River.”

Roed said the team is slowly coming around and the community is responding in a positive way.

“They’re talking about the team, there is a renewed excitement and businesses want to be associated once again with the Storm brand, our young people are coming back to the games,” Roed said.

Council has yet to make a decision on the request.

Can pot referendum succeed in B.C.?

B.C. is famed around the world for the quality of its marijuana, and people here buy, sell, grow and consume it mostly without fear of serious consequences from the law.

Elections B.C. has approved Dana Larsen’s drive for a referendum on decriminalizing marijuana possession – a reminder that pot remains illegal, and unlike our neighbour in Washington state, our province and country remain far away from laws that take drug profits away from criminals.

Any move to shake up drugs laws in this country is seen as a good thing. But pot smokers shouldn’t have a victory toke yet – it’s not clear this referendum will even get off the ground, and, if it does, if the province will give it the time of day.

Similar to the ultimately successful drive to oust the HST, Larsen and his supporters need to collect signatures of at least 10 per cent of elected voters in each of the 85 ridings.

The gross mishandling of the HST by the Liberals made it easy to whip up voter anger, and voter turnout. Many people in B.C. may support laxer laws around possessing marijuana (or buying, selling and growing for that matter), but the issue is unlikely to inflame the same passions as a government perceived as dishonest and shifting tax burdens from business to citizens.

The drive to create a marijuana referendum could help to get voting-adverse young adults more engaged in the political life of B.C. At the risk of glib stereotyping, hopefully the

referendum advocates stay focused and organized, and aren’t smoking what they are trying to legalize.

If the referendum were to succeed anywhere in Canada, it should be B.C. But even if Larsen and his allies win, the victory will be non-binding and symbolic – the B.C. Liberals don’t have to support the vote.

B.C. may have a permissive pot culture, but this isn’t the U.S., where, for better or worse, voter propositions are binding. And unlike Canadian provinces, states like Washington and Colorado will defy their federal government based on the will of the people.

Cell tower just didn’t fit

There has been a lot of commentary regarding the decision not to allow Telus to build a cell tower in Willow Point Park.

Most of the commentary seems to revolve around a perception that this decision was rooted in a petition of 125 people and on the unknown science of the health effects of such a tower. However, the situation, in my opinion, is very clear and has nothing to do with either of the above.

Council had an obligation to deny this proposal simply based on the zoning that currently exists for the park. The area is zoned as PA-1 (Public Areas) and subsequently contains a building height restriction of 15 metres for all other uses other than hospitals and schools (which are permitted 20m).

Therefore, the 30m pole proposed was simply not in line with the zoning. This is coupled with the obvious fact that erecting an industrial telecommunications facility in an area currently developed for parks and recreation is a clear conflict of uses for the area.

Despite what has been reported I would believe these factors were what contributed most to the decision council finally rested upon.

When in doubt get tested for hepatitis

Hepatitis is a frequent headline-maker in media, and creates lots of online chat in blogs, tweets and posts.

No wonder, given that this liver disease is potentially life-threatening. Despite all this attention, getting people tested and treated is still a challenge and a concern for public health practitioners.

As we acknowledge the annual World Hepatitis Day on Sunday, July 28, the number of infections is still of concern.

One in 12 people worldwide has liver disease, and greater than three per cent, or more than 120,000 people in B.C. are hepatitis B and/or C-infected.

Enormous strides in hepatitis B prevention

have been made in the province through the use of publically-funded vaccinations covering all children. However, hepatitis C is a different story.

There is, so far, no vaccine for this silent killer, which can lay dormant for decades, often only showing symptoms when much damage is done.

Two-thirds of all cases are “baby boomers” born between 1945 and 1965 – people who should be in their peak earning and familyraising years. Instead, many of their years are spent with increasing disabilities because of this disease.

The earlier hepatitis C is detected the sooner it can be treated and the greater the likelihood of recovery.

Treatment is the start of the healing journey which for many can lead back to full, produc-

tive lives.

In March, the provincial government announced $1.5 million in one-time funding to the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation to explore ways to better address both hepatitis B and C epidemics in B.C. In collaboration with the foundation, we’ll be talking with interested individuals and organizations from across B.C., including healthcare providers, liver specialists, regional health authorities and the new First Nations’ health authority, community groups, and nongovernment organizations to develop options for improving the provincial response to viral hepatitis.

It is important that health professionals continue to emphasize that people need to be tested for hepatitis B and C so that those diagnosed can be engaged in care and treatment.

Work at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS has taught us some very important lessons. For HIV, “treatment as prevention” improves the health of those already infected with HIV, while simultaneously reducing the risk of HIV transmission others. This model can be adopted for hepatitis.

Applied to hepatitis C this approach could simultaneously prevent liver disease and avert further transmission of the disease, multiplying the beneficial impact of treatment.

In order to stem the hepatitis virus in BC we need to unite the voices of affected communities, health professionals, and community leaders, and transform knowledge into action.

Green up St. Ann’s Dan Samson’s idea to turn St. Ann’s Road into a green space (reported last week in Paul Rudan’s column “Hold the Pavement...”) is brilliant, and I hope the city gives it some serious thought.

As the article points out, the idea solves a number of problems in the area. I want to add my perspective as well.

I built a home near the downtown area about two years ago. I wanted a view and hoped to be near a vibrant city centre. My decision was a mistake.

There is no advantage whatsoever to living near downtown. The neighbourhood that surrounds the downtown core contains a large number of

rental properties.

It seems the people that occupy these properties are mainly concerned with roaring through the neighbourhood on their way to visit friends, attend a party or a bar, or shop at a box store, etc.

Most appear to have no interest at present in a relaxing downtown with boutiques, specialty food stores, coffee shops and unique restaurants, galleries, etc. They have other priorities.

For them – and others from the suburbs – who use Alder, the downtown is an inconvenience.

They need to speed through it and around it to get to their destinations to the north and south.

Campbell River GOES PINK to Promote a Sustainable Seafood Choice!

Pink Salmon Campbell River In celebration of the abundant return of pink salmon, Pacific Salmon Foundation’s Campbell River Pink Salmon Festival will serve up delicious samplings to the public. The object of the festival is to promote pink salmon as a sustainable and nutritious seafood choice.

This is the second year for the event and it will be held at Robert Ostler Park on Saturday, July 27, 2013 starting at noon. Attendees will be treated to barbecued pink salmon sliders prepared by the Kinsmen Club of Campbell River. All of the pink salmon has been generously donated by Canadian Fishing Company and sides and salads have been donated

by Save-On-Foods. There is

no admission charge for the festival which will also feature entertainment, family activities and educational exhibits.

Pink salmon are a nutritious food source that has traditionally been overlooked by the public.

In the Pacific, pinks are the

most abundant and sustainable salmon species - returning in very large numbers, so they can be sustainably harvested without damage to the overall resilience of the population. Also, purchasing pink salmon can help support B.C. fishers who have struggled over the last decade with low salmon

returns.

“Our message to the public is that we as consumers have the power to ensure that salmon have a future for us to enjoy,” said Dr. Brian Riddell, President & CEO of the Pacific Salmon Foundation. “Pink salmon have

the ability to serve as an abundant human food source while also adequately supporting ecosystems that depend on them for survival.”

This year’s festival will feature a variety of exhibits for the entire family. The day will kick off with a Pink Bicycle Parade for the kids and anglers will have the oppor-

tunity to take in casting and fly tying demonstrations.

Several local restaurants will also be in attendance, and they are will be supporting the Foundation through the contribution of a donation from seafood entrees.

Wooden pink salmon will line the stores on Shoppers Row, where the downtown core of Campbell River will truly go Pink for the month of July.

Since 1989 the Pacific Salmon Foundation has invested more than $600,000 into 98 salmon conservation, restoration and enhancement projects in the Campbell River region. These funds have been leveraged by local volunteers, and through in-kind labor and added donations have had a total impact of more than $4.8 million.

Wild Pink Salmon Cakes

By: Garrett Schack, Executive Chef, Vista 18 Restaurant, Victoria For the cakes 2 lbs. fresh pink salmon, skinned, boned and coarsely chopped in the food processor 1 medium onion, chopped 1 clove garlic 1 cup fresh dill (1 cup before chopping or a large handful) Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1/2 a lemon 1 egg 1 cup bread crumbs 2 tablespoons capers Salt and pepper Vegetable or Olive oil for cooking

Method Place onion, garlic and dill in food processor. Blend until onions and dill are very fine. Combine these ingredients in a large bowl with coarsely chopped salmon, the zest of 1 lemon, the juice of 1/2 a lemon, 1 egg, 1 cup bread crumbs and salt and pepper. Mix well. Form the filling into even sized patties.

Pre heat a flat bottomed pan to medium and add a thin coating of oil, fry for 2 - 3mins on each side or until golden brown. Serve with some fresh organic greens and your favourite dipping sauce.

mallest of the Pacific salmon family, pinks are easily identified, even in their bright silver, oceanic condition. They have tiny scales, large black spots on the back, and dark, elongated oval marks on the tail. The inside of the mouth is white but the gums are black, and the tongue lacks any teeth.

As pinks draw closer to spawning, their silver sheen

dulls and fades beneath mottled brownish-green blotches, a transformation which is less pronounced in females. A prominent hump begins forming on the back of a male, and a pronounced hook with large canine teeth develops on its snout. Depending on location, pinks spawn relatively close to saltwater, usually from late September until early November.

The young emerge the following spring, and after reaching the fry stage, migrate almost immediately to the sea. Thus, at two years of age, pinks have the shortest life cycle of the Pacific salmon.

Around 1957, commercial trollers developed a method for taking pinks on artificial lures. This attracted recreational anglers, and the most productive tactic to evolve — which works coast-

wide — is to slowly troll in a straight line at depths ranging from subsurface to 100 feet. Use small hootchies or lures in various shades of pink or red, trailing them 22 to 28 inches behind a Hot Spot, O’Ki or Gibbs flasher trimmed with red or pink.

Whether lure-tossers or fly-flingers were first to get in on the fun by fishing from shore is a moot point. Their eventual findings were to use small offerings of any colour as long as it was some shade of pink. More importantly, anglers started realizing that pinks provide fast-paced fishing action on light tackle, and when properly cared for, make excellent table fare.

Flies proved more effective than lures because they can be manipulated more efficiently in the shallow water. A lure will plummet to bottom unless forward momentum is maintained, but a fly, being light in weight, can be twitched along quite slowly, or even stopped dead for short periods if desired.

TACKLE AND TACTICS The mostused fly rod required is an 8-weight, and some anglers go as light as 5-weight. Lighter tackle is fine as long as you don’t encounter largerthan-average fish, say an eight- to 10-pound pink, or a roving coho or chinook.

This is when a longer rod — 10 to 12 feet — is a good choice, generally in a 7- or 8-weight.

However, if offshore winds are a problem — as they often are — a nine-foot rod will be a better, less tiring choice for punching out line against it.

When selecting a reel, bear

in mind that most pinks will probably never run more than 100 feet, but some may keep going until the backing is gone and the leader parts. Choose a reel with an adjustable, butter-smooth drag, and an exposed rim for added pressure when required. Its minimum capacity should be a full length of line — usually 90 feet — plus 200 yards of backing.

Salmon aren’t leader shy; however, a fly line

slapping down loudly on the surface might well spook an entire school out to deeper water.

Generally, if you stick with a standard nine-foot tapered leader, you should do well. As for tippets — 8-pound test premium nylon

monofilament should handle any pink spawned, and provide a margin of error should a Chinook or coho happen onto your fly.

When it comes to fly selection, sticking with “pink for pinks” is a good rule of thumb, but bear in mind that nuances of

shade can make a dramatic difference, as can overall size.

Generally, a single pattern will serve for all situations, but only if tied in a range of pale to vibrant pinks, in hook sizes No. 10 through 2. For gear fisherman, again, anything that is pink.

Pinks seldom hit hard. Rather than a solid take, it is often soft, almost like encountering a weed.

Thus, at the least sign of resistance, set the hook — but gently — for pinks have a fairly soft mouth.

SOME POPULAR SPOTS Although pink salmon are found pretty well everywhere along the coast. The area that attracts the most consistent angling action is from Royston, south of Courtenay, to Campbell River.

Pink salmon along the Royston and Comox waterfronts usually appear about mid to late July, but anglers never know where the action will be. Unlike other areas on Vancouver Island’s east coast, salmon may school around the old shipwrecks forming the breakwater at the booming grounds near Royston, across the mouth of Comox Harbour in the shallow bay behind the long finger of Goose Spit, or along the waterfront from Comox Marina to the Courtenay River mouth.

Although scarcely 3 km across the water from Royston to the inside of Goose Spit, it’s a 13 km drive by road.

Who’s best with seafood?

Entrants still needed for Salmon Festival cook-off

Although Campbell River is known as the “Salmon Capital of the World” our waters are teeming with many other ocean delicacies.

The Salmon Festival on Aug. 9-11, has therefore expanded the Salmon Cooking Competition to include many other types of fish and shellfish that everyone enjoys.

Professional and amateur cooks are still needed for the events. Better still, there’s prize money! Last year, the average competitor walked away with between $500-$800.

Cash prizes are given to the top three in each category. Prizes go up to $200 per category for the pros and up to $150 for amateur cooks.

Not only is there cooking competitions for the various seafoods, but Salmon Fest has added cooking demonstrations

Drew Harbour’s star of art show Drew Harbour is a focal point of life on Quadra Island.

During August, painters Kathryn Manry and Teresa Reimer will be showing paintings that were inspired by the changing moods of Drew Harbour.

The show at the Heriot Bay Inn runs Aug. 6 to Sept. 3. Join them at the opening reception on Aug. 8, from 3-6 p.m.

so everyone can learn how the chefs prepare those delightful morsels.

The Seafood Cook Off will open on Friday at 6 p.m. with the Professional Chef ’s Oyster Competition. Their creations will be sampled and judged by the public.

Sampling and judging will be done by purchasing a strip of tickets at the Cook-Off area for $10 (strips will have sufficient tickets to sample every chef ’s creation, plus a few extra to reaffirm your selection before voting) Last years competition was won by Amy’s Asian Foods with Popsey’s Log House Restaurant taking second spot.

On Saturday and Sunday, amateurs and pros will compete in various events to see who has the best culinary skills and earn the bragging rights for 2013 as the best cook in that category.

Don is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doreen; by sons Huston (Lesley), Murray (Kim Patten) and Chris (Nadine), by daughters D’Arcy (Dean Thulin) and Rhonda (Bert Cato, Harper); by grandchildren Ben Gato, Geoffrey Cato, Daniel Cato, Braydon Harper and Madison Harper.

Don loved his family and enjoyed golf, fishing and curling.

Historic Port Neville: Calm port in a storm

It isn’t until you get to Port Neville, on the mainland side of Johnstone Strait and the next stop along the coast heading north from Kelsey Bay, that you realize why Norwegian settler Hans Hansen would have chosen this place to build a homestead.

Not only does the 13- kilometre-long Port Neville inlet offer shelter from the winds and strong currents of Johnstone Strait, but it is pristine and beautiful.

This is the spot where Hansen chose to build his home – on the south side with long, white sandy beaches stretching in either direction.

Today, a large government dock remains that boaters can easily access, and at the end of the dock, the sturdy old log Hansen home, built in 1920, still stands as a tribute to Hansen and his ingenuity.

For more than a century, Port Neville was an important community on the coast and over the years operated as a fuel depot, post office, general store and gathering place.

Hansen began building cabins on his property in 1891, and by 1892, the port became a stop for

the Union Steamships, enabling Hansen to ship to Vancouver and to receive supplies.

It wasn’t long before he began trading with local natives and offering services to other settlers and loggers.

By 1895, he became the first postmaster for Port Neville.

The Port Neville post office was, in fact, the oldest continually oper-

ating post office in B.C., with Hansen’s granddaughter, Lorna Chesluk, being the last postmistress when it closed in 2010.

Hansen had six children, an adopted son Billy from his first wife Elizabeth who had passed away in 1898 and five children with his Nor wegian wife Kathinka – Karen, Olaf, Edith, Lilly and Arthur.

His daughter Edith married Harold Bendickson of Hardwicke Island in 1940 aboard the Columbia, (see photo) one of the fleet of Columbia Coast Mission vessels, and three years earlier, Harold’s only sister Lilly married Olaf Hansen at the Bendickson home on Hardwicke Island.

Edith (Hansen) Bendickson wrote several

articles on the Hansen family history, which are available in the Museum at C ampb el l R iver archives.

Also in the archives are Hansen family photos and correspondence, and Hans Hansen’s diary.

Most recently, an artifact from the Port Neville store, a McCaskey Account Register, was donated to the Museum.

bell River is offering two guided historic boat cruises to Port Neville this summer, on Sunday, Aug. 11, and Aug. 25.

The cruise includes Kelsey Bay, Hardwicke

Island and passes by Yorke Island, once site of a Second World War defence installation.

One of the world’s largest yachts passed south by Quadra Island and Campbell River last Saturday, and was captured by Mirror reader Audrey Hunt. The $330-million Italian-built ship was built by Fincantieri Yachts and launched in 2011. It’s 134 metres long and can be illuminated at night by turquoise-coloured neon runners that outline the ship. It’s rumoured to be owned by Russian vodka magnate Yuri Scheffler, but it’s also available for lease.
