The Regional District of Nanaimo is getting fed up with waiting for definitive action on the Island rail corridor.

Speaking at Tuesday night’s regular board meeting, Qualicum Beach director Dave Willie noted his municipality’s letter to RDN CAO Paul Thorkelson that called for discussions about the future use of the corridor and to examine alternatives, other than rail, for both the corridor and the $15 million dedicated to it from the provincial and federal governments. “There are serious concerns being expressed,” Willie said. “The corridor is a tremendous asset to the Island and we need all options on the table for discussion. I have a grave concern that the board is focused on one option only.”

Thorkelson stressed the district looks at the corridor as a venue for many types of transportation.

One to hospital, another facing charges

A motor vehicle crash on Highway 19 Monday resulted in one man being sent to hospital and another facing charges under the Motor Vehicle Act. Central Island Traffic Services reported the crash took place in the early afternoon when the driver of a pickup truck that had been heading north near Exit 51 attempted to cross the grass median to pull a U-turn and head south.

The driver of the pickup didn’t suffer any injuries but the lone occupant of the second vehicle was rushed to hospital with a broken arm, neck pain and a sore back.

As a result of the crash, the driver of the pickup truck is facing one charge of driving without due care and attention.

Approximately 75 artisans will display an impressive array of arts and crafts from across Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands this weekend in an incredible beachside setting.

“This year we’ll be in around the trees and gardens by the tennis courts,” explained Julie Geen, who will be displaying the Wired to Rock crystal and stone jewellery she and her husband Ron make. The local couple are a perfect match for the third annual Art in the Park exhibit and sale organized by the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition.

The couple started selling Ron’s photographs at local street markets and fairs as a hobby a few years ago and noticed jewellery was always a top draw for other booths so they expanded their efforts but they are intentionally keeping it casual.

“If it becomes a regular business it stops being fun,” Ron said as they showed off a sample of their wares recently.

Selling as Wired to Rock, the couple have been to both the previous Art in the Park weekends and grown along with it.

Beachfest manager Trish Smith pointed out it is a juried fair to ensure an appropriate bal-

ance of art and craft styles and they even put a call out for the specific types of artisans they were missing in the early applications.

The region has a large number of talented artists and while they include the widest possible sample of arts and crafts it is also a priority to showcase as much local talent as they can and promote local business.

Along with a lot of crafters, photographers and some food and candle makers, they are adding more artists, especially people with “beachy” stuff, she said.

Smith said that while the world class sand sculpting of Canada’s only qualifier for the world championships attracts over 90,000 people a year, they offer many added value events in the park most weekends. The sand sculpting exhibition runs until Aug. 18 with a Summer Concert Series running 7- 9 p.m. every Friday and Saturday night, an amateur sand sculpting competition (Aug. 3), the Oceanside Overdrive Car Show (Aug. 4) and KidFest and the Quality Foods children’s sandcastle competition (Aug. 17-18).

When Pat Kucey made an impassioned plea to the Regional District of Nanaimo for quick action on the Hawthorne Rise sanitary sewer issue, directors listened.

Speaking as a delegation at Tuesday night’s regular board meeting, Kucey said 18 households on Hawthorne Rise — sandwiched between Eaglec-

rest and Columbia Beach, still are not connected to sanitary sewer services and must rely on septic fields.

“The anomaly is you have half the street with septic tanks,” she said. “As a taxpayer in that area, the situation should have been corrected — possibly by the residents — many years ago. We had an option of putting in sewer for $10,000 each and now it’s well over $20,000.”

She noted residents had been hoping to have the service by May, but a petition to this effect had some technical glitches, meaning it had to be redone.

“We need action,” she said.

“We need progress. We really need to go forward with some speed to get this completed by the fall.”

Board chair Joe Stanhope, who represents the area, reassured her that the board was on the job — with his support.

This proved to be the case, with directors voting to pass a bylaw to establish the Hawthorne Rise Sanitary Sewer Capital Financing Service Establishing Bylaw to come up with $35,000, at a rate of $5.92 per $1,000 of home value.

After the vote, Stanhope urged staff to act quickly on the matter.

MBA students help local seniors After weeks of preparation and one day of fierce competition, three teams of Master of Business Administration (MBA) students from Vancouver Island University raised more than $8,000 for a worthwhile seniors charity in the community.

All funds raised will go towards making the dreams of local Vancouver Island seniors come true through the new charitable Dream On Seniors Wish Foundation.

The foundation, which aims to inspire se-

niors to never stop dreaming, is the brain child of local home care provider Nurse Next Door, chosen as the sponsor for this year’s MBA Business Challenge.

Each term, MBA students form three teams and are assigned the task of organizing and promoting a major community event to raise funds for charity.

The winning team receives the coveted Mike Mann MBA Business Challenge Trophy, named after retired VIU Dean of Management, Mike Mann.

Money for what maintenance?

ayor Chris Burger signs a lot of cheques every month, bills the City of Parksville must pay like any family or business.

Unlike many in his position as a municipality’s top elected official, Burger has no stamp with his signature — he signs everything by hand.

He says there’s one account, one cheque he signs every month, that causes him some angst. Last year, the City of Parksville paid Southern Rail about $46,000 for the upkeep of railway crossings in the city.

“I can justify every cheque I sign, but I don’t know about these,” BurgThe Island Corridor er said this week.

There has been no passenger rail service anywhere on the Island since March 2011 when the railway was deemed unsafe. Freight service continues in some areas south of Nanaimo.

The Town of Qualicum Beach signs similar cheques every month to the account of Southern Rail, to the tune of about $18,000 a year. Both Parksville and Qualicum Beach also waive the property taxes on ICF land

in their communities.

“This is a cash cow for somebody,” said Qualicum Beach Coun. Dave Willie, the town’s representative on the Regional District of Nanaimo’s (RDN) board of directors. “There’s no maintenance going on.”

The Victoria Times-Colonist reported Tuesday that B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone met with ICF officials Monday and said he will try to persuade Via Rail to restart passenger service on the Island. Meanwhile, ICF CEO Graham Bruce told the paper negotiations with Via Rail will conclude in late August, with or without an agreement.

“Many of us agree we just need to bring this to a conclusion,” said Willie, who made a motion (it passed unanimously) at the last Qualicum Beach town council meeting urging the RDN to ask the ICF to pursue uses for the corridor other than rail.

“The Island Corridor Foundation has become nothing but an Island rail foundation,” Willie said this week.

“Many of them (ICF board members) are not being responsible.”

Willie said the people of Qualicum Beach have spent their own funds on the restoration of the local train station, and have work on major intersections in a holding pattern, waiting to see what’s going to happen with rail service.

“We’ve stepped forward and done our two bits,” he said.

The City of Parksville has not passed any motions recently in relation to the corridor or the rail service, but Burger said he believes his coun-

cil and that of Qualicum Beach are “very much aligned.”

“There’s great concern in the City of Parksville, and not just in the fact we are disbursing funds,” said Burger.

“We’re not getting information back and we don’t know where things stand. We all are in favour of the re-

turn of rail but there never has been a business plan that makes sense.”

Burger also said the little information he is getting points to passenger rail service, if it ever restarts, concentrating south of Nanaimo.

“And that begs the question: where’s our stake in this?”

“I don’t think they are mutually exclusive,” he said.

“Discussion of rail can continue and we can talk about alternatives for pedestrians and other transportation options.”

Willie wasn’t mollified however and he received strong support from his colleagues around the table.

“The time is appropriate and the

temperature is right for us to make some significant inquiries about the finish line,” said Nanaimo director Bill Bestwick.

Bowser director Bill Veenhof agreed.

“I want to take this further,” he said. “Perhaps we should look at a motion to terminate our agreement with the fund.”

Parksville director Marc Lefebvre echoed Willie’s frustration.

“VIA Rail simply won’t give a definitive answer of any sort and to me it seems like a simple thing — are you going ahead or not?”

Nanaimo director Jim Kipp urged caution however.

“I think we are in a quagmire but we have an August deadline now,”

he said. “Can we sit on everything until then and then make a decision as soon as possible?”

“If you feel really bad, stop your payments for a while. That usually works.”

The board agreed to receive the letter from the Town of Qualicum Beach and took no further action on the item.

PARKSVILLE FIREFIGHTERS RAISE MONEY FOR MS

Parksville fire fighters are holding their boots out in their annual effort to raise funds for muscular dystrophy.

They will be in front of Thrifty Foods in Parksville from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., this Saturday, July 27 raising money and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy Canada (MDC) and the people with neuromuscular disorders that they support.

The volunteer fire fighters are looking for people to help them fill their boots and “help make muscles move,” explained department member and local MDC chair Liz Olson

Canadian fire fighters have been helping MDC fight the battle since 1954. Muscular dystrophy is a group of over 150 disorders characterized by the wasting and progressive weakness of muscles. Over time, many people are unable to walk, speak or ultimately breathe. Some diseases are life-threatening and presently, there is no cure.

The money raised by the Parksville Volunteer Fire Department will be donated to improve the quality of life for people with these disorders with mobility equipment, support services and funding research into a cure.

Olson said they will have a fire truck on the Corefield Street side of the building (the big parking lot) to draw attention and they encourage people to stop by to learn more and donate.

“Sponsoring VIU’s MBA business challenge was a perfect fit for our company, enabling us to work with students in the program and support seniors at the same time,” said Nurse Next Door owner Chris Wilkinson. “It was amazing to see the support from the community during the students’ fundraising initiatives and see their hard work pay-off.”

“The competition was a huge success fundraising wise

and it also gave students real world experience designing, managing and executing a major business project,” explained MBA internship coordinator David Woodward. “Students developed their organizational and event planning skills, networked with the local business community and raised awareness and funds for a meaningful charitable cause.”

The winning team, who called themselves the VIP’s,

raised $3,941, and took home the Mike Mann MBA Business Challenge Trophy. Their community event was a concert featuring writer and blues artist David Essig and the winner of the Vancouver Island Talent Search, Mikaila Tomba.

The other MBA teams did everything from selling Krispy Kreme donuts to hosting an afternoon of movie showings on VIU’s Nanaimo campus.

A

s soon as word BC Ferries had received approval to purchase three new vessels was out, the whining began.

Perhaps it could be more softly called spin from the B.C. Federation of Labour, but it was misguided spin to be certain.

It’s typical B.C. Fed deception, a tactic to steer people away from the real issues.

“On one hand, the provincial government lobbies the federal government to ensure ships are built in BC, but it refuses to do the same when it comes to BC Ferries,” George MacPherson, President of the BC Shipyard General Workers Federation, said in a B.C. Fed news release sent to the media Tuesday afternoon.

“Almost fifty years ago we built the original vessels, surely some 50 years later, we can build the replacements as well,” said B.C. Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair. “British Columbians pay every day for the operations of BC Ferries; so it should be British Columbians who first benefit from any shipbuilding contracts.”

That’s all well and good gentlemen, if you are willing to ignore the structure of the governance of BC Ferries and the realities of the competitive bid process.

First, as Transportation Minister Todd Stone said: “Government does not have the purview to dictate to BC Ferries who can and cannot participate in their procurement process. That’s internal to BC Ferries.”

He also added: “Certainly we’d be very supportive of the ships being built in British Columbia.”

Who wouldn’t be in favour of the jobs created for British Columbians if the ships were built here? That’s the motherhood-issue tactic, a favourite of the B.C. Fed. So, why can’t B.C. shipbuilders put in winning bids?

Why do they need a competitive crutch?

It’s a world economy, so compete.

The last thing BC Ferries needs on its financial statement is millions of dollars in extra costs because it is forced to buy B.C.-built vessels.

Does the B.C. Fed believe the people of B.C. subscribe to the false-economy ideals they espouse? Does it not have confidence B.C. companies and workers can compete in the global economy?

If it does, perhaps it should revisit the results of the polls on May 14.

Letters QB BuBBle Burst Re: Susan Whitney’s letter published in the July 16 issue of The NEWS (‘A rocky ransom’).

Susan, I hate to burst your bubble, but Qualicum Beach is not the quiet, conservative town you think it is and as you read on you will realize your problem is not unique.

I am a long-time resident of Qualicum and over the years have observed many changes, some good, some not so good. I have found that most residents here are quiet, considerate and thoughtful, but not all.

Some, live by what I refer to as the “entitlement” philosophy. Their mantra is: “I can do whatever I want, whenever I want because I know so-called ‘important’ people and I have lots of money, therefore rules just don’t apply to me.”

My reply: big deal, who cares? You can still treat people with respect.

Don’t get me wrong, the majority of homeowners on our street are lovely people and my husband and I feel privileged to live next to them. However, some are rude, inconsiderate and, it is obvious, were never taught any manners growing up.

These residents don’t think twice about parking in front of other peoples’ houses.

They have an endless supply of all types of vehicles and always use our boulevard as a parking lot. They do have their own boulevard but why mess it up when you can mess up someone else’s, right?

The one time we did ask the resident to move his truck he exploded in a barrage of expletives (he delights in using one particular four-letter word), and simply ignored the request anyway.

But perhaps I’m being too harsh. It is possible he just overspent the budget on his grossly-oversized house and has to take in boarders to help pay the mortgage. Why else would a two-person household own five large vehicles?

My main concern now (as we’ve accepted the fact we live next to a used car lot) is that if an ambulance, fire truck or any emergency vehicle had to drive in our area it would be, for the most part, quite difficult.

A few of our neighbours have serious medical issues and they would be the ones who would pay the price.

Well Susan, I hope my situation makes you feel better. Be the “eternal optimist” and keep thinking someone will “ask before you park and never lift a person’s rocks.” My suggestion though is keep an eye on your flower pots.

not so smart meter For us all this yammering about opting in or out of the smart meter program, and the costs associated with that, is utter nonsense.

We have been told repeatedly that our meter would be connected. We have an acreage and dogs, etc. and the routine of them reading the old meter was so unorganized or confusing, by their staff, I became rebellious.

Once again, our reading has spiked without any significant change to our usage. We just went through many months with a rebate due to their over-billings. This month’s bill spiked again, and upon contacting BC Hydro, it is reported that the “smart” meter

still is void of reporting by itself.

Does anybody really know the costs of getting off the hydro grid? Opting out in Arizona is very inexpensive. B.C. isn’t the only place “smart” meters are being dumbed down.

Passing Bite Buck On July 23 at approximately 8:30 a.m., my daughter was running on Fern Road East in Qualicum Beach and was bit by a dog (a shepherd cross).

A person driving by witnessed the attack and stopped — he drove my daughter home. The owner of the dog did nothing to control the dog and just stood there crying and told my daughter that the dog had already bitten someone else.

Twenty minutes later I drove down Fern Rd East to get the address of the house to report the incident and the dog was still running loose and was going after a gentleman on a bike — the owner was standing and watching.

I have been to the SPCA, RCMP, Town of Qualicum Beach bylaw officer and Nanaimo animal control but Fern Road is not in their jurisdiction. The Nanaimo animal control office referred me back to the SPCA, who then refereed me back to the town. Everyone seems to be passing the buck. This aggressive dog is still on the loose and no one is doing anything about it. Fern Road East is used by more foot traffic than cars and someone is going to get badly hurt.

OPEN LETTER TO THE PUBLIC ERMINESKIN TRIBAL ENTERPRISES Ermineskin Tribal Enterprises Ltd., (ETEL) is writing this letter in order to clarify the nature of our ALR application. Ermineskin has a long history with Parksville. For over thirty years we have worked with various Councils and Mayor on our projects. We understand the concerns regarding your drinking water and need for certainty and clarity in of the well fields and the wetland area.

We have a signed covenant with the City of Parksville that allows for its usage of Ermineskin Park at no cost to the community. The Ermineskin lands and Park are also the location of the City drinking water supply. We have dutifully paid full taxes for thirty years without any attempt to obtain any special exemptions for the use of this land area.

In our ALR application we are offering a greater portion of this land (24.2 ha) at no cost to the taxpayers of Parksville, as an indication of our respect and goodwill towards the community and City. This proposal to donate 60 acres will ensure the community retain the Park, the water supply and access as permanent and protected Parkland. The remaining portion of land (11.2hectares) we wish to develop will provide a net benefit to the area and tax base. Our project will employ local contractors, builders and utilize the local tradespeople and will add value to the land and adjacent homes.

Our property is not and has not been offered for sale. We are prepared to donate the bulk of the land certainly the areas most needing of protection, the well fields and the wetlands by offering the City sixty acres at no cost.

The land is designated for Agricultural use and should this process not receive support, we will explore options for allowable use under the ALR designation on our property next to the Springwood wells.

ans of water-based fun won’t want to miss the excitement going on in Nanaimo this weekend.

That’s because the Nanaimo Marine Festival’s World Championship Bathtub Race is slated to take to the waves from July 26-28.

The fun leaves the dock at 10:59 a.m. on Sunday with the official countdown for the race, but there’s much more in store, including the firing of a Howitzer to start the race, musical entertainment, military displays, a food fair and more.

The SAR Techs were lowered 80 feet where they met up with the paramedics from Powell River who had arrived on scene on board the Cape Caution. The paramedics and SAR Techs worked together to secure both casualties on spine boards before putting them in rescue litters for the hoist into the helicopter and taking them to hospital.

• Ferry riders in B.C. will soon be getting aboard a trio of brand new ships. That’s because the BC Ferries Commissioner recently approved an application by the BC Ferry Corporation to build three new intermediate class ships to replace the Queen of Burnaby and the Queen of By Nanaimo.

That’s because the federal government recently signed what they are calling the Shiprider program, which sees RCMP officers stationed aboard American ships as they patrol Canadian waters.

Officially known as the Cross-border Maritime Law Enforcement Operations, the program is designed to remove the international maritime boundary for law enforcement.

Specific enforcement activities consist of detecting, monitoring and potentially boarding vessels in either Canadian or American waters.

• Launched in June of 1951, the luxury cruise liner Andrea Doria resembled a floating museum more than anything else and was an icon of Italian pride. That national pride took a severe blow on this day in 1956, when the New Yorkbound liner was hit amidships by a Swedish ship, MS Stockholm.

GRANT-IN-AID APPLICATIONS Subject to the provisions of the City’s Grant-in-Aid Applications Policy 3.26, the City of the Parksville may provide direct financial assistance to community groups and organizations for events that will benefit its citizens and visitors. Eligible applicants are community non-profit organizations in the arts, cultural, recreational or social services field.

Organizations wishing to apply for funding assistance are asked to obtain a copy of the policy to make sure their submission will meet all the necessary criteria and must submit their application on the approved form.

Copies of the policy and application form can be obtained in person at the Civic and Technology Centre or from the Grant-in-Aid Applications page on the City’s website [parksville.ca].

Applications will be forwarded to the Grants-In-Aid Select Committee for review. The committee will make recommendations to Council regarding the approval and amount of the grants; Council is not obligated to allocate any or all of the $2,500.00 budgeted funds.

One person’s trash really is another persons treasure and Sue Hiersemann knows this to be true.

Hiersmann is hoping the stuff she has saved from going to the landfill will find a place in someone’s home.

When things break most people throw them away but when Hiersemann gets her hands on junk she turns it in to something useful.

Funking up junk is a passion for the Coombs resident and now she has turned it into a little business she calls Reclaimed to Fame.

She will be selling her many odds and sods that she has revamped into stylish furniture and home decor items at the St. Mark’s Fair July 27.

Reclaiming and recycling has become trendy these days but Hiersemann said her family was involved in the practice long before it was popular.

Her grandfather used scrap wood from crates to make picture frames but it wasn’t until she inherited them that she realized how much they inspired her.

“I grew up with the pieces he did. I was surrounded by them and I loved them. I never realized how much he was in to making things out of scrap.

“My grandpa would have loved to see me doing this,” she said.

Her creative epiphany only came about eight months ago and since then she has been focused on finding new purposes for objects that have been abandoned.

What do you do with an old door that is cracked? Hiersemann knows. She turns it into something useful and the old door that was about to be tossed is now an attractive shelving unit.

“I have always liked taking old things and making them useful,” she said.

Now she is sharing these old things made new with others.

Hiersemann doesn’t call herself a picker but she admits to scrounging things that people have thrown away.

“I have found a few things in the dump.

Sometimes I purchase things that I see potential in.”

Hiersemann pokes around thrift stores and garage sales looking for items and then brings them home to breathe new life into them.

She said a little bit of paint can go a long way in turning something old and unwanted into a sought after piece.

Not everyone has the vision to make lovely old things a little bit lovelier, but for Heirsemann she said when she acquires a piece of junk she knows what it wants to be and her creativity takes over.

They can be one of the most spectacular light shows on earth with their circular arcs of colour, so it is no wonder that rainbows are so inspirational.

Stephanie Blackford, an artist who calls Qualicum Beach home, is becoming world renowned for her spirit rainbow coat that was inspired by a rainbow she photographed on her back porch.

“For many years I have been printing my photographs on silk and putting them on my clothes. That process is very familiar to me … hence was born the rainbow spirit coat,” she said.

Her artistic journey started 25 years ago in Ottawa Ontario when Blackford Design was founded.

Since then Blackford has been creating and retailing her handmade creations which can be found at craft shows and markets as well as online.

She is one of the many artisans who will have their works on display at the annual Filberg Festival from August 2 to 5.

Blackford continues to evolve as an artist and although she creates wearable art she is now branching off into painting and will soon

be selling those pieces on-line.

At Filberg you will find her coats with ornamental covered buttons and button holes, wearable art ponchos with trees and nature scenes embroidered on them, wraps and of course her spirit rainbow coats all of them made by her talented hands.

“I hand die the wool rovings and die the yarn after I spin it. I love spinning. Making your own wool is so much fun,” she said.

Blackford said she takes custom orders for spirit rainbow coats so they can be tailored to each individual’s vision.

“I did an order for a woman and her theme was a winter forest and a wolf theme. Some want a goddess or an ocean … it goes on and on thats why they call it a spirit coat … it is their personal totems.”

If you are one who likes to make a fashion statement you will want to check out Blackford at booth 52.

Blackford is just one of the over 120 artisans who will be setting up amongst the stately trees and gardens of the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park overlooking Comox Harbour.

With live music, food and a stunning location, it is no wonder the festival continues to be one of western Canada’s longest running and largest juried outdoor arts show.

BC Ferries has received approval to construct three new medium-sized vessels, and the B.C. government is leaving it up to the corporation to decide where they are built.

“Certainly we’d be very supportive of the ships being built in British Columbia,” Transportation Minister Todd Stone said Tuesday.

“Government does not have the purview to dictate to BC Ferries who can and cannot participate in their procurement process. That’s internal to BC Ferries.”

BC Ferry Commissioner Gord Macatee announced approval Tuesday to replace two old ferries scheduled for retirement in 2016.

The 48-year-old Queen of Burnaby serves the Comox-to-Powell River run, and the 49-yearold Queen of Nanaimo sails on the Tsawwassen-Gulf Islands circuit.

BC Ferries announced Tuesday it will invite qualified bids for two replacement ships with capacity for up to 145 vehicles and 600 passengers. A third with room for 125 vehicles and 600 passengers will be used for peak-season service on the Gulf Islands run and replacement duty when the other two are undergoing maintenance.

Qualified Canadian and international shipyards will be invited to bid, with a contract to be awarded by January 2014. BC Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan said the focus is on cost savings and standardization of vessels, many of which now have different deck heights and dock requirements.

The last major contract was for three Coast-

al-class ferries, completed by a German shipyard in 2007 and 2008. They now serve the main Vancouver Island runs.

Corrigan said BC Ferries will examine whether new ships can be run on liquefied natural gas instead of diesel. That increases the construction cost, but fuel savings are projected to pay for themselves in as little as eight years.

The Coastal Ferries Act requires the BC Ferries Commissioner to approve capital expenditures. The order for these ferries specifies that construction must be open to a pool of bidders, and that food and retail services on board must not be subsidized by fare revenue.

Brian Carter, president of Seaspan Shipyards, which operates two facilities in North Vancouver and Victoria Shipyards in Esquimalt, said the announcement is “great news for B.C. Ferries and great news for the overall marine industry in the region.”

Seaspan is currently five months into design work, with construction due to start next spring or summer on a contract to build vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard. The company will assess its capacity to take on such a BC Ferries contract once it determines the specifics of the request, Carter said.

While Seaspan has never built an LNG powered vessel, Carter said the manufacture of LNG equipment would likely take place off site.

In terms of competing against foreign firms, he said the federal shipbuilding program is giving the company and the B.C. industry in general more competitive capabilities every day.

“True efficiencies (will be) gained once we start constructing vessels.”

Thrifty Foods Parksville is pleased to welcome back a familiar face in new store manager Jerry Jaggers.

Jerry, a 23 year veteran of Thrifty Foods, first moved to Qualicum Beach in July 1992, after joining the Parksville store that June.

Working in various capacities in the Island-grown store, Jerry was Meat and Seafood Manager for 10 years before becoming Bakery Manager for two years and Grocery Manager for two years.

In addition to working in Vancouver for a year as an operations assistant, and for a year to open the Port Moody store, Jerry has earned the distinction of being the only manager to serve at the helm of all three Thrifty Foods stores in Nanaimo, including opening Brooks Landing.

“While I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to serve Thrifty Foods in Nanaimo and on the Mainland, I’m very happy to be back in Parksville,” Jerry says. “After seven years away, I’m looking forward to serving the Oceanside community for many years to come!”

In response to a complaint to The NEWS about RVs, boats and trailers in the Lodgepole-Chestnut area in the southwest corner of Parksville, city bylaw compliance officer Aaron Dawson explained the current rules.

It basically boils down to this: trailers must be attached to a vehicle to be on the street, and can only be there for a couple hours. Off street, on private property, within the bounds of the “unsightly property” guidelines, most things are allowed.

While you cannot stay in a recreational vehicle (RV) in the city, except in RV parks, you are allowed to park them on your property, along with boats and trailers.

“People are allowed to store things on their private property,” Dawson said, “if people want to change that they can talk to council.”

He said they haven’t received many complaints about RVs in the city and pointed out bylaw enforcement is complaint driven.

The property management bylaw defines unsightly properties in detail including things like long grass or weeds and piles of refuse or various items laying around or in piles.

“It is helpful if people complain,” he said, explaining the city writes the

From blues to retro rock n roll and soulful ballads there was something for everyone when some of Vancouver Island’s up and coming musicians showcased their talent during the second annual Beach Day in Qualicum Beach.

Performers of all ages singing songs in all genres took to the sound stage near the Beach Hut for the Qualicum’s Got Talent contest July 21.

The Distributors, a band out of Nanaimo, was the last act on the stage but took first place and a $500 prize after they nailed their two original songs.

Their polished sound has been described as a tasty hard-rock cocktail with flavours reminiscent of great classics such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Heart. Even after a gig in Kamloops the night before and driving all night back to the Island the band still had great energy and began their performance with an incredible version of Heart’s Crazy On You. Second place and $350 was awarded to Tyrell Beal. The former KSS grad performed some covers of his favourite bands as well as an original song.

Beal’s guitar battery died just as he began but fellow mu-

sician Emma Plant who played some original songs earlier came to his rescue and loaned him her guitar for his performance.

Third place and $250 went to Alex Wickett of Parksville who sang and played keyboards while fourth and $150 went to Chrystie Mountain.

Only 13 years old, Mountain had perfect pitch and delivered an evocative version of Ed Sheeran’s The A Team and Colby Callait’s Bubbly, inducing goose bumps on some audience members.

Discovering new artistic expressions Painter Shelley Penner branches out to try new artistic mediums and finds new passion LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnewscom

When the cost of framing her watercolour artwork became unmanageable, artist Shelley Penner went hunting for alternatives, and she fell deeply in love with two of them.

Penner has had an interest in arts since she can remember. When she was in kindergarten she remembers taking turns at the different play stations around the room.

“I never wanted to leave the easel because I was never finished when they said, ‘okay, your time’s up’,” she laughed.

Penner was born in Saskatchewan but her father soon joined the army and had the family moving from Ontario to Germany, Winnipeg, Manitoba, and finally Delta, B.C. In her twenties she had saved up enough money to go to art school, and began attending the Vancouver School of Art, now called Emily Carr University of Art and Design. But it wasn’t as practical as she had hoped, so she switched to photography and then left the school two years later.

Penner moved to her current home, Port Alberni, where her family was living, and worked as a framer as she continued to paint and do photography. Her medium of choice was watercolour but it became too expensive to frame the work, she said. She then began doing acrylic paintings on stones and found it to be fruitful.

“I was looking for a way I could create hangable art work without having to frame it,” she said. “And since I’ve always had an interest in all things natural; rocks, shells, everything, I decided to combine my love of rocks with my love of painting, and my love of animals.”

Penner said stone is easy to work on, with a beautiful smooth surface, and she loves the natural background the pieces possess. She finishes them with a lacquer spray that brings out the colour in the stone. The pieces are affordable, making them popular with buyers.

She now shows her work at all the rock and gem shows around the Island.

Some years ago Penner was trying to figure out how to paint a number of canvases she was given, when she came across another artists’s piece that used airbrush-

ing. Being a watercolour artist, she couldn’t imagine having to paint every stroke onto them, she said. So she asked a friend if he had an airbrush she could borrow, which is a small tool that sprays the paint in tiny droplets.

“He leant me an airbrush to try out and after doing four canvasses—just the backgrounds—I was in love,” she said. “I went on eBay and bought my own airbrush and I haven’t looked back.”

Penner said she loves how the tool helps her achieve the softness and spontaneity she felt she got from watercolours, but with acrylic paints.

rently for sale at the Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply at 206 W First Ave in Qualicum Beach.

At the gallery, her love for birds, animals and outdoor scenes shine through. Many of her pieces are taken from a combination of her own photos, many taken in the area.

Penner is currently working on a mural for one of the entrances to the Blue Marlin Inn in Port Alberni, where she has already completed a number of canvases for the rooms and a mural for the businesses sign.

A group of seasoned Island musicians will come to together to perform an afternoon of jazz Saturday, July 27, in support of a local service club.

Ralph Barrat and the Sharp Seven is made up of musicians who all perform regularly in the big band and jazz combos of the island.

“This is a very exciting new group with a strong, tight horn section and a solid rhythm section playing great

swing tunes and standards made popular by the great jazz vocalists and composers of the past and present,”said Barrat.

Barrat has sung with the Georgia Straight Big Band for a number of years and has performed as a vocalist and pianist in combos around the Comox Valley for years.

Barrat and The Sharp Seven will perform at the Parksville Eagles Club Saturday, July 27 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Ticket holders will hear the trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, drums and bass as Barrat belts out jazz favourites in the intimate space.

Tickets are $12 for the event and benefit the Parksville Fraternal Order of the Eagles. Get tickets from Cranky Dog Music in Parksville and at the door.

HAFI adapts homes for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities

Brenda has always been an active woman. However, recent health issues including osteoarthritis in her left knee and losing kidney function have slowed her down. Her mobility is limited and she is now on dialysis three days a week. To adjust to her changed circumstances, Brenda sought help with her daily living activities.

Part of that help came from the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program offered through BC Housing. Launched in January 2012, the HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

Brenda applied for a new walk-in bathtub because she couldn’t safely get out of the tub on her own.

Walk-in tubs include additional safety measures such as anti-slip floors, grab bars, and a very low step in.

Home adaptations may also include handrails in halls or stairs, ramps for

easier access, easy-to-reach work and storage areas in the kitchen, lever handles on doors or faucets, walk-in showers, and bathtub grab bars and seats.

Brenda is a strong advocate for the program and has even shared HAFI brochures with nurses in the renal unit where she undergoes dialysis.

If you or someone you know is having difficulty performing day-to-day activities safely and independently – the HAFI program may be able to help.

Since the program began, more than 300 households completed renovations with HAFI financial assistance, making it possible for seniors and people with disabilities to continue to live in the safety and comfort of their home.

Cheryl Lynn ERICKSON

December 19, 1944 ~ July 17, 2013 It is with deep regret and sadness that my beloved wife and best friend Cheryl Lynn Erickson (Stables) passed away on Wednesday, July 17th, 2013.

Cheryl Lynn was born on December 19th, 1944 in Ottawa and is survived by her husband Dennis.

Predeceased by her parents Madeline and George, Cheryl leaves Dennis and various family and friends to mourn her passing.

James Alton (Jim) Cochrane

90 years, of Parksville B.C., passed away peacefully Thursday, July 18, 2013 while eating his breakfast granola at Stanford Place in Parksville.

Jim was born March 17, 1923 in New Westminster B.C to Percy and Olive (Findlay) Cochrane. He graduated from Burnaby South High School in 1941 and from U.B.C in 1947 with a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering.

Jim spent his working career in the pulp and paper industry, in Ocean Falls, Powell River and Port Alberni, where he made many life-long friends. He moved to District 69 in 1976 where he enjoyed golf, gardening, reading, travelling, red wine and life in general.

Jim served on the board of the Society of Organized Services and served Knox United Church on the Finance Committee. He was president of the Eaglecrest Garden Club and, in his personal gardening life, maintained the church cemetery for many years.

Jim was predeceased by sister Ruth (Mann) in 1968 and wife Phyllis (Campbell) in 1981. Jim was twice lucky in love and, in 1985, married Margaret Brandon.

He is survived by Margaret, sister Edith Chamberlayne (Gordon), children David (Betty Seinen), Mike (Holly) and Anne (Mel Hunt) and step-children Pat, John & Sarah. He leaves grandchildren Jesse, Emma, Keith, (Dave & Betty) Aysha, Lynden, Alex, (Mike & Holly) Vivian (Anne & Mel), Kitty (Pat), Will & Katherine (John), great grandchildren Georgia (Aysha & Patrick) and Miles (Vivian & Brendan).

The family would like to thank the staff of Stanford Place for the care Jim received in the last two and a half years of his life.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday July 28 2013 at Knox United Church 345 Pym Rd. Parksville B.C with Reverend Foster Freed officiating.

Dora Krueger January 30, 1927 July 20, 2013

We regret to announce the passing of Dora Krueger, a long-time resident of Nanoose Bay and Parksville.

Dora will be deeply missed and forever remembered

by Egon her husband of 64 years, her daughter Irene and her husband Victor, her granddaughter Jessica, her son Guenther and his partner Barry. She was preceded in death by brothers Horst and Paul and is survived by her sister Grethe and brother Guenter in Germany.

Dora died very peacefully in the palliative care unit in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and the family is grateful for the care she received there as well as her final few weeks at Little Mountain Manor. Dora will also be missed by many friends in Parksville, throughout BC and Ontario, and in Germany.

The interment service is private for the immediate family. Condolences may be left at yatesfuneral.ca and a celebration of her life reception will be held on Sunday, September 15th at 747 Doehle Avenue in Parksville from 1 pm to 5 pm. Please drop by at any time. No flowers please, but donations to the Parksville or any other Humane Society in her honour would be appreciated.

Kenneth James Adams, CD (Ken) Retired Military, Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers September 19, 1946 - July 14, 2013

It is with much sorrow that we announce the passing of Ken after a brave battle with leukemia and all that comes with it. He was so happy to have one last winter trip to Puerto Penasco, Mexico, which he loved so dearly. Ken passed away in the Palliative Ward of NRGH with his wife by his side.

Ken leaves to mourn his wife Jean of 30 years, his son Robyn, daughter-in-law Heather, his adored grandchildren Gabriel, 5 years, and Alora, 3, forever in our hearts. He is predeceased by his parents James and Jean Adams, and his brother Gary of Kitchener, Ontario. He also leaves to mourn his nephew Troy (Nancy) of Kitchener, Ontario along with family and friends.

There will be a service for Ken at Knox United Church in Parksville, B.C., 345 Pym St. at 2 pm on Friday, August 2nd.

Christina Paulyn Scott of West Vancouver, BC. passed suddenly and unexpectedly on July 11th, 2013 at the age of 50.

She is survived by her loving son Garrett Scott, her only sister Stacey Scott and her parents Lyn and Bob Scott. She was a loving aunt to Danika and Kyra Scott and will be greatly missed by all of her cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and business associates.

A celebration of her life will be held on July 28th, 2013 at 1pm at Nanoose Place Community Centre in Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island.

Norah Sandford Stone (nee Wright) January 28, 1925 - July 7, 2013

It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Tom after a battle with cancer. His wife, Barb and daughters Lori & Teri were by his side. He is now resting in paradise.

Tom was born in Kirkland Lake ON and moved to Port Arthur, ON at a young age. He grew up in Port Arthur and met the love of his life, Barbara, whom he married in 1959. After raising their family, Tom and Barb moved to Qualicum Beach where they managed the Sea Flame Resort for 22 years, retiring in 2011.

He is survived by his wife Barb of 53 years, children Lori (Dougal) Shewan, Teri (Ray) Antcliffe, Michael (Lisa), Tom (Cindy), 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Tom will also be sadly missed by many friends he made in the community. A small celebration of life was held at their home in Qualicum Bay on July 19. To those who could attend, the family thanks you for your love, support, kind words and stories you shared with us that evening. We would also like to thank those who called, emailed, sent cards and flowers.

A special thank you to Dr. r. Porter-Cogan and the nursing staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, BC. You were so kind and caring in helping our family through this sad time.

Decades before it was trendy, in 1951, Norah and Mack sold everything they had and took a slow boat to the UK and Europe for a 4 month trip. We never tired of hearing their story of arriving back in Vancouver with $5 to their name and not a single regret.

Norah’s spirit for adventure continued to serve her (and Mack) well over the years as they moved back and forth across the country, and gave up corporate security to buy and run their own business.

Norah cherished her many delightful and fond friendships, including those she met through bridge, Spindrift Writers, Qualicum Hearts in Motion Walkers (and the coffee after!), tennis, badminton and her years volunteering at SOS in Parksville, and those she had known from early childhood!

She was an ardent fan of all sports (especially her Canucks), and delighted in seeing Andy Murray win at Wimbledon just hours before she passed.

Special thanks to Dr. Paddy Mark for her exceptional care and friendship.

McBride, Roy David June 9, 1926 - July 6, 2013 Roy passed away peacefully at his home in Nanoose Bay. His long healthy life was interrupted prematurely by malignant mesothelioma. He will be sadly missed by his wife Joan, son David (Debbie) and daughter Brenda who spent his last days with him sharing memories, hugs, kisses and lovingly caring for him. He thanked his family for their end of life care and they thanked him for his guidance, support and love for us all. Roy was especially proud of his four grandchildren Lindsay, Keeley, Kyle and Russell. “Papa” always made a special effort to share in their lives. He will also be remembered by his entire extended family and many friends with whom he always kept in touch.

Roy was born in Chemainus, BC and grew up at Great Central Lake on Vancouver Island.

He spent his early years hunting, fishing, canoeing and pursuing the love of his life, Joan.

He attended UBC and lived in North, and then West Vancouver where he made many Life Long friends.

Roy was a Professional Engineer (Civil) and had a successful career as employee, then co-owner of Halse Martin Construction. His career accomplishments included the restoration of landmarks such as the Orpheum Theatre and CPR station. Some of Roy’s other special projects were the Expo Roundhouse and the whale pool at the Vancouver Aquarium.

He served as chairman of the BC Construction Association and was on the Executive Committee of the Canadian Construction Association. He was past president and a life member of the Vancouver Regional Construction Association. He also served on many local volunteer boards including the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre and the Parksville Lawn Bowling Club.

His 25 year retirement was spent in continuous adventure - travelling, fishing, swimming, gardening and boating. At the young age of 82, Roy and his good friend Mike circumnavigated Vancouver Island. But his favorite pastime was being with his wife of 63 years, spending time together. We will always remember Roy saying “I’ve had a good life” and we know it was filled with love, respect and happiness.

An informal celebration of his life will be held on July 27th from 1-4 at Fairwinds Golf Club, 3730 Fairwinds Nanoose Bay. JAMES (JIM) HANFORD ESTEY

Jim was born July 27, 1918 in Williamsburg, York County, New Brunswick, and passed away July 14, 2013, at Stanford Place Care Campus in Parksville.

Jim will be profoundly missed by his wife, Rosemary, along with her daughter Margaret Robins, her two grandsons, Jason Kowalewicz (Bronwen) and daughter Kaelyn, and Ben Kowalewicz (Rachelle), all of Toronto, and friend, Stan Kowalewicz of Courtney, B.C. Jim and Rosemary had lived in Parksville for the last 23 years, and many friends will miss his stories, his intelligence, his considerate and generous nature.

Jim served with the RCAF from 1940-1945 as a Propulsion Specialist. His commitment to the job and the deep friendships he formed during that time left him with a sense of accomplishment and an enduring personal gratitude.

Following discharge from the Military in 1945, he entered into a life of interesting and challenging work. His training had been extensive and he worked first with TCA as a Propulsion Merchant. Later he was with Rolls Royce for 17 years. During that time, he was responsible for investigating various engine problems, including crash sites. Investigations took him to many places, such as Churchill, for several months in minus 40 degrees. On one trip, he arrived at a crash scene in Fort Chimo by dog taxi. An investigation in the Dominican Republic required him to deal with problems such as snakes, wild boars and sink holes. His travels for Rolls Royce took him to many countries: France, Luxembourg, Greece, Turkey, UK, Caribbean, plus others.

This work led to additional responsibilities with Air Canada, CP Air, BOAC, Alitalia, Executive Air and others.

At age 65, in 1983, Jim retired for three weeks! Then he was approached by International Air Leases in Miami and became their sole representative in Montreal as Service Manager. Finally, at age 70, Jim retired with Rosemary to Parksville on Vancouver Island.

Jim had been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #49, for many years. He had received the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Overseas Service and the War Medal, 1939-1945. During his working career he received an Award in 1988 from The Grand Lodge of The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers for 25 years of loyal service. In addition, he received awards from both Rolls Royce and Air Canada for years of Service and also recognition on his retirement.

During the last six weeks of his life, Jim was able to compile his memoirs, a true gift to his family and friends. Not only did he have an amazing memory, he had a natural talent for storytelling.

Jim loved Rosemary deeply and together they loved their home here in Parksville.

Jim created a parklike back yard that gave one the sense they had entered a tranquil, peaceful, retreat. They loved the ocean and spent many early afternoons parked near the water where they would have their naps.

Special recognition is given to Dr. L. McClure, a friend as well as being Jim’s Doctor.

The care both he and Rosemary received in Stanford Care Campus has been exceptional. The Nurses, the LPNs, and all the caregivers were helpful and genuine in their attention to Jim’s needs. He was comforted to know the same wonderful care and attention will continue for Rosemary. He has been deeply grateful for the many friendships formed throughout his lifetime, from one Coast to the other. Internment will take place at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens.

Diana Lamont was the oldest contestant and entered the competition to mark off one of her bucket list items.

She brought back fond memories for the seniors in the crowd when she sang Dusty Springfield’s 1966 hit You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me. The entertainment prior to the music festival proved to be just as entertaining.

Next up was the Bomb Bomb bikini fashion show. Escorted by young men in beachwear, several young ladies walked the cat walk in bikinis created by former KSS grads Cheryl and Laura Anderson.

The swimwear designers find a lot of their inspiration for the playful pieces from hanging out on the beaches of Australia.

The Bomb Bomb bikini line is carried by Smithford’s Lifestyle store in Qualicum Beach which was one of the sponsors of the event.

“It’s good for the kids, and they’ve definitely improved over the season — they’re fantastic,” he said of his squad of 12 players, “and the parent group is great too — it’s a lot of work.”

It’s been a great year for local baseball overall as Oceanside’s AAA Tier 2 team of 10-year-olds just qualified for the provincials as well “so we have two teams going to the provincials from one division, which is fantastic — first time ever.”

With an 8-3-1 record against Single A, AA and AAA Tier 1 and 2 teams, the Reds, says team manager Michelle Jackson, “are a very strong group of 2003 born players, with many wins above their level and age group.” Oceanside’s Reds Mosquito A Rep team are through to the provincial championships after mining a silver medal at the Island finals.

Going into Island Championships in Juan de Fuca last weekend, a best of three against the Victoria Eagles, the Reds were 1-1 in two very close games then came up short in a hard fought battle in the championship game on Sunday, but secured themselves the second berth off the rock in the BC championships in Cloverdale Aug. 1-5.

“The thing is our Single A team is drawn from five house teams — Victoria’s is drawn from 25,” pointed out Reds’ head coach Rob McGorman, adding that over 50 per cent of the teams they’ve been playing, and beating, have a bigger drawing area and older kids.

“We’re single A and we’ve been playing AAA teams, older teams of almost all

Oceanside’s Special Olympians are back home feeling great about their game after a strong showing at the B.C. Special Olympics Summer Games.

Played July 11-14 in Langley, B.C., Oceanside swim coach John Larner, said “the weather was great, the venues and the accommodations were outstanding.”

With 1,200 athletes plus the many coaches and volunteers, it was “a large event.”

“From the opening ceremony to the wind-up dance, things moved along well, although the fire alarm Saturday night did create some additional excitement,”

said Larner, who made the point that while not everyone who attends the Games will win medals, “the fact that they qualified and represented their sport and our local community makes them all winners. “ “It was a great trip,” he said. “They always look forward to going they have a great time they get to renew friendships,” and confirmed there is a cross section, there are those more for the social aspect, “and those who train hard core to get ready to go and are very competitive. They really get into this.”

Parksville’s Morningstar Golf Club is no stranger to accolades, but being named as one of the top 59 public golf courses in the country “feels great.”

There were only two golf courses on Vancouver Island to earn the honour — Bear Mountain is the other. B.C. had 15 courses in all — second behind Ontario at 22 for most — named to the list, put together every other year by Score Golf.

Morningstar was also named the ninth best value golf course in the country (Bear Mountain was 38th).

“Back in 2009 we were ranked the ninth best public golf course in B.C., but to be rated not only 46th out of the top 59 in all of Canada means more, and also, to be named ninth best value golf course nationally, that’s the other big reward in all this,” said Morningstar’s Michael Loftus, vice president in charge of marketing.

“It’s a great honour, and it says a lot,” he said of the two national rankings, “I think it gives the direction of what we’re trying to do at the club, which is to provide the best product possible,” then made the point “I don’t know if you’ve played the course this year but it’s in the best condition it’s been in since I’ve been here in 2008. The golf course is phenomenal this year,” he said, “and that’s our goal, is to have the best quality facility, and the golf course is a priority to us. It’s huge. We want it to be the best on the Island, and Golf Canada, the RCGA, wants us to hold more national events here because they believe in the product.

Loftus said they are also talking to the PGA Tour about bringing back the qualifying event, “and this is all because of quality of the golf course, and this helps in our longer marketing and where we

Five matches spread over three days Beautiful blue skies, sweltering heat and great greens were the backdrop for this weekend’s Gold Bowl played in Nanaimo.

According to Parksville Lawn Bowling Club’s Carol Bucyk, several teams from up and down Vancouver Island, as well as Powell River, took part, as well as a strong contingent from both Parksville and Qualicum.

The tournament consisted of five matches spread over three days, with the finals being played on Sunday afternoon.

In Division A, the Nanaimo team of Rick Quibell, Mary Mulligan and Vern Greenhill clipped Parksville’s Stu and Jan MacNaughton and Jim Muir.

Division B saw Parksville’s Mick Banks, and Rick and Lynne Britz beat out Jake and Elaine VanKooten

and Anne Grist from Port Alberni.

In Division C’s hard fought all-Oceanside battle, the QB team of Cor and Helena Poland and Gerry Murphy locked up the win over Parksville’s Chris and Martin Fereday and Kate Wilson In the D Division, Parksville’s Wayne and Brenda Edwards and Roberta Stets powered through to beat out Powell River’s Bob and Eileen Milsom and Maureen Hanright (Qualicum).

GAME ON: The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club hosts the two day Men’s and Ladies Mixed Triples this weekend (Saturday and Sunday), with games going at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. both days.

The club is located at 149 E. Stanford, admission is free, and the public “is always welcome.”

Oceanside’s Masters Mixed Orthodox Softball League wrapped up its season Friday and it was the Sliders hoisting the hardware.

The league, which is made up of male players over 40, and female players over 35, fielded only three teams, 45 players this year, and everyone had a ball.

“Absolutely. Literally,” confirmed OMMOSL vice-president and Sliders’ player/coach Jay Adams.

In the year-end playdowns, a mini-round robin held at Qualicum Beach Rec Fields, the Sliders beat the Crushers Thursday night by six runs. On Friday the Sliders lost by two to the Wreckers.

In the back end of the double-header that evening, the Crushers beat the Sliders, but only by one run, meaning the Sliders, who also won the regular season standings, won the playoff title.

The league also presented its Most Sportsmanlike trophy to Don Hall.

Adams, 48, has been with the league since its inception 10 years ago, and explained they broke away from the regular ‘ortho’ league because it was getting a bit too competitive for the older crowd.

“We had six teams when we started so we’re looking for more players, for more teams for next year,” said Adams, adding “everyone’s welcome to come out, it’s about exercise and having fun.”
