Rodeo weekend provides fun and entertainment for young and old

By Treena Mielke The Rimbey Rodeo weekend’s ongoing potpourri of events turned the town into a hub of activity, giving young and old alike ample opportunity to have fun, enjoy the festivities and socialize with neighbors and friends.

“I have had really good feedback, overall” said Jackie Stratton, Rimbey Chamber of Commerce

president. “And when I came in in the morning, the town was bustling.”

Stratton was glad some businesses participated in sidewalk sales and others decorated their premises for rodeo days.

“We really appreciate everyone that takes part,” she said. “It all makes a difference.”

ATB won the chamber sponsored decorat-

ing contest, the Flower Gallery was second. Servus Credit Union and Scratchin’ the Surface each received honorable mention.

Peter Stenstrom, director of community services, was pleased with the parade, noting it gets bigger each year.

He said the Red Deer Royals and the Red Deer Adult Marching Band were big hits. Also the unusual attractions of a boy on a bull, a man with a buffalo on a leash and the Edmonton Sherriff’s Posse were definite crowd pleasers.

Summer fun for everyone during rodeo weekend Continued from Page 1 Registrations are not taken for the parade and participants simply lined up in the field behind the high school before starting time.

“It works well,” said Stressor “We have about half as many people in the parade as we have watching it.”

The Rimbey Farmer’s Market, usually at Pas Ka Poo Park, was held in the parking lot of Servus Credit Union.

Manager Gayle Rondeel said the location proved to be a good one.

“This way the vendors got to see the parade as well,” she said. “We thought it would be in keeping with the sidewalk sales that were going on.”

Rondeel said some shoppers mentioned they weren’t aware of Rimbey’s regular farmers’ market.

She was also pleased the weather remained warm and sunny.

“It doesn’t rain in Rimbey on a Sat-

urday morning,” she joked.

The West Lake Community musicians, a group who usually play at the farmers’ market in Pas Ka Poo Park, entertained at the Beatty House after the parade during the annual rodeo barbecue.

“We very much enjoyed them playing,” said Florence Stemo from the Beatty House, noting a good crowd attended the event and close to $900 was raised from the barbecue. All funds will go to the Beatty House.

The annual Rimbey Rodeo pancake breakfast, held July 12 and sponsored by Servus Credit Union and Rimbey Co-op, was well attended. All proceeds of the breakfast went to the FCSS adult day support program.

Eckrim Agencies’ 20th anniversary customer appreciation beef on a bun lunch drew a good crowd.

The Rimbey Alliance Church Vacation Bible School presented a lively colourful entry into the parade.

Anika Palm, formerly from Rimbey was one of the people who enjoyed partaking of the good food, a chance to socialize and enjoy the beautiful grounds of the Beatty House.

Flower power: Seventeen-month-old Sara Miko, granddaughter of Jerry and Terri Cunningham of Eckville and nine-year-old Olivia Olivieri of Crowsnest Pass checked out the Rimbey Farmer’s Market July 13. The toddler was visiting her grandparents, along with her mom, Melanie, who now lives with her husband, Greg in Pierceland, Saskatchewan.

Olivieri’s parents were also visiting the Cunninghams.

It is the season of summer.

It is the time, once again, to bring out the crazy patchwork quilt of days; some already stitched in place and some yet to be created.

It is the season when summer days stretch endlessly; sort Treena Mielke of like the relentless On The Other Side blue of a sky that goes on to forever.

I like summer a lot, which is rather weird, being I live in a province where the bloom of the season vanishes almost as quickly as the Alberta rose disappears from roadside ditches. And, even though I visualize the sunshine as this wonderful golden haze that spills over everything, more often than not, it is in liquid form and drowns everything.

But, despite all this, there are moments of summer that will live in my mind forever in a really good way, even though I will admit they may be sparked ever so slightly by sentiment and are, no doubt, enhanced by time.

This year, oddly enough, one of the events that turned out to be a memory maker for me was the local rodeo.

In actual fact, I would not have attended said rodeo, except for my job.

But, as sometimes happens when we do something because we have to, not because we want to, there are unexpected, unexplained surprises.

And unexplained delights.

I trudged into the rodeo grounds, lugging this huge camera with a super sized lens. I looked around for the best place to stand, sit, kneel or crouch which is what you need to do if you are a photographer trying desperately to get an in focus, action type photo.

I was soon to discover that the right place to be was usually the place where I was not.

But, despite that, I kept trying and I kept watching and somewhere in-between I wolfed down a corn dog. I felt momentarily better as I was starving. I felt totally justified in eating the corn dog, because I was, after all, at a rodeo. I told myself healthy food like fruit and fish and sissy lettuce leaves do not belong here among the real men and women of the west!

I’m not exactly sure what magic marker is used to color small town rodeos with the happy face of summer, but, whatever it is, it works.

And, somewhere along the way, between shooting pictures and trudging to the ever-illusive best place to shoot these pictures, I accidentally became a rodeo fan.

I even began to think about buying cowboy boots with which I could scuff dirt and other unmentionable things and one of those hats that seem really big probably because they are.

I know, of course that, except for my imagination, which is quite vivid, that won’t happen, but I did develop a new found respect for people who rodeo, people who help with the rodeo and people who announce at a rodeo. And I appreciate the fact that the fans are smart enough to know

that attending a rodeo somewhere in downtown, Alberta is not such a bad way to spend a summer afternoon.

I’m thinking if I were rich, as in dollars and cents rich, I would go on a vacation somewhere where ‘work’ was a four-letter word not to be used much, if at all.

But, reality states I am not, nor will probably ever be dollar and cents rich, so I have to make do with what is here in my own sun soaked or rain

drenched province.

And, in reality, that is not such a bad thing.

There is lots to do right here, right now, and, it is amazing, how quickly one more crazy quilt square of summer can be created simply by living in the moment.

And, later, I can, of course, re-create the moment, sort of like that good golf shot I had back in 2010.

Or was it 2008?

A frog in the pot If you drop a frog in a pot of boiling water, so they say, it will hop right out again. Frogs aren’t stupid. Well, okay, but they’re not that stupid.

However, if you put a frog in a pot of cool water, and gradually turn the heat up under it, the frog will not notice what’s happening. It will happily sit there until the water boils, and it dies.

Now, I have never carried out this experiment personally — I prefer my frogs’ legs fried — so I can’t vouch for the truth of it. Besides, I already knew human beings have trouble detecting slowmoving threats.

The foundation of every civilization is an adequate food supply: human beings simply cannot live at the density of population civilization implies without a reliable agriculture. But the supply of good agricultural land is limited, and the number of human beings is not.

Governments everywhere are well aware of the problem: we are now seven billion people, heading for an estimated 11 billion by the end of this century, and the food situation is already getting tight. So tight, in fact, the average price of the major food grains has doubled in the past 10 years. But everybody finds local reasons to ignore that fact.

Most governments in the developing countries know it is the tropics and the sub-tropics where the warming will hit food production first and hardest, but the short-term political imperative to raise living standards takes precedence over the longerterm imperative to curb the warming. So headlong industrialization wins the policy debate every time, and we’ll worry about the food supply later.

The developed world’s governments do nothing because until recently they believed the catastrophe would mostly hit countries in the former Third World. Recently, however, it has become

clear the developed countries will also have trouble feeding themselves.

Many of them depend heavily on underground aquifers for irrigation and the water is running out. For example, the amount of irrigated land in Texas has dropped by 37 per cent since 1975. The amount in Kansas has fallen by nearly 30 per cent in the past three years.

It is also becoming clear that the impact of warming will also be much greater than anticipated in the developed countries. They are already experiencing extreme weather causing massive floods and prolonged droughts — like the heat wave that hit grain production in the US Midwest last summer, or the coldest spring in 50 years in England that has cut wheat yields by one-third.

Combine the steep fall in irrigation, the crop losses to wild weather, and the diversion of large amounts of cropland to grow “biofuels” instead of food, and it is not at all certain the developed world will be able to grow enough food for its own citizens in five or 10 years time. So are the leaders of these countries launching crash programs to stop the warming, cut down on water losses and end the lunacy of biofuels?

Of course not. The smarter ones just reckon that since their countries will still be rich, they will buy up whatever food is available elsewhere and feed their own people that way. It will be other people, in other countries, who go hungry.

And the slower ones? They’re just frogs.

UFA and 4-H Alberta commit to a renewed partnership UFA Co-operative Limited and 4-H Alberta have agreed on a renewed three-year commitment to develop youth, family and agriculture. The two organizations have been working together as partners in the community for well over 75 years.

“We deeply value a continued partnership with 4-H because promoting, celebrating and investing in Alberta’s rural community is one of our top priorities. Our partnership allows our organization to showcase the importance of volunteerism, youth development and education in rural Alberta,” said Bob Nelson, UFA president and CEO. The renewed partnership directs UFA support to a variety of programs and opportunities throughout 4-H Alberta, with a special focus on leader training and educational components, including the Annual 4-H Leaders’ Conference, Provincial Equine Leaders’ Forum and Beef Leaders’ Update. The partnership also contributes a significant portion of support to grassroots initiatives such as financial contributions to all club level 4-H Alberta Achievement Days in the province and the newly developed 4-H

Loyalty Program offered to all 4-H members with 15 per cent off all livestock and equine supplies at all UFA locations.

“UFA has a direct impact on the success of the future leaders of tomorrow, and continues to show remarkable leadership and initiative in its efforts to give back to the communities where their members, customers and employees live and work.

UFA also recognized the importance of volunteerism by awarding five 4-H alumni volunteers for their outstanding 2011 contributions to their communities. The volunteers were acknowledged at UFA Farm & Ranch Supply stores. Recipients of the UFA 4-H Alumni Service Award were presented with a $2,000 UFA gift certificate in recognition of their contributions.

Rodeoing remains popular sport for young generation

By Treena Mielke Rodeo is a family affair for Jared Hart, saddle bronc winner of the Rimbey CARA rodeo.

“I used to ride in the rodeos all the time, but now I go mostly because my son rides in the steer riding. I did my 20 years but now I go because it’s fun for the whole family, said the seasoned bronc rider from Hanna.

Hart’s children were all at the Rimbey Rodeo with 12-year-old JW placing third in steer riding and six-year-old Justin and five-year-old Sadie competing in the mutton bustin competition.

Nine-year-old daughter Savanah didn’t ride barrels this year, but came along just for the fun of being at the rodeo.

Hart won saddle bronc and his son won the steer riding last year at the Rimbey CARA rodeo, leaving the rodeoing family with good memories.

“It is a bit of a drive for us but it’s getting to be our favorite rodeo.”

Exciting action at the Rimbey Rodeo saw Jared Miller and Kyle Noble winning second and third in saddle bronc competition with scores of 69 and 65.

Darcy Banasiak won the bareback competition with a score 64, followed by Garrett Dunn with a score of 59.

In bull riding Chad Davidson led the way with a score of 71, followed by Jacob Stahl with a score of 68 and Jarvis Rinehart with a score of 66.

In the steer riding (ages seven to 12), Joe Thebeau and Brandon Tatz took first and second with scores of 76, JW Hart was third with a score of 73

and Kale Ward took fourth with a score of 70.

Winners in the breakaway roping (ages seven to 12) were Quade Kozak, Reene Robinson and Cole Warren.

Breakaway roping was won by Kennedy Smith.

Tie-down roping winners were Ken Lepp, Shane Smith, Joe Feser and Duane Ganske.

Team roping winners were Dwayne Robbins/ Gary Fecho, Rod Warren/Glen Lauwersson, Chris Cutter/Steve Cutter, Vince Flynn/Mary Stapleton, Steve Maddox/Wade Meston, Bruce Roberts/Marie McCaughey, Liam Roe/Thom Roe and Quinton Kozak/Lucas Brown.

In the barrel racing (ages seven to 12) Kianna Kozak, Lacy Burrage, Shanay Wilson, Keely Grover, Shayna Dyrland and Montana Klasses were top competitors.

In the barrel racing (ages 13 to 15) Blayde Melaney, Brooke Cooper, Logan Berreth and Cheyenne Delay were the top riders.

In the ladies’ barrels, top riders were Jalaine Anderson, Shayna Dodds, Sherry Andrew, Christine Miller, Darrian Saldecker, Lindsay Gittens, Candy Moore and Amber Gertner.

Hazel Street from the Rimbey Exhibition Association board said the local rodeo and the CARA rodeo held July 12 to 14 went well this year.

“We had an excellent crowd; bigger than usual and enthusiastic contestants. The weather cooperated and all went well. The cabaret was well attended and there was no problems with rowdiness.”

Jada Holtkamp, Evan Buist and Tyler Weenink took second in the wild pony race during the CARA rodeo, held last Saturday and Sunday.

Jared Hart from Hanna won the saddle bronc competition at the Rimbey Rodeo. His son, JW Hart came in third in the seven to 12 year-old steer riding competition.

Second floor for library gets thumbs down

By Treena Mielke An attempt by the Rimbey library board to see the library expanded to include a second floor never got off the ground floor.

The results of the board’s request to have the town’s engineers investigate the feasibility of adding a second level were not conducive to going ahead with the idea.

“The addition of a second floor would require the entire roof would need to be removed or undergo extensive strengthening to handle the increase in live load,” LEX3 Engineering Inc. said in a report to council.

The interior load bearing wood stud walls will need to be strengthened and steel beams will be the require replacement to support the increased loads, the report said.

strip footings throughout the building which is a significant and costly undertaking, the engineering firm pointed out in its report.

“Upon reviewing the structure of the existing Rimbey Library it is recommended that a second floor is not added to the existing building. Under current design loading, the existing building is generally at 100 per cent of the structural capacity and cannot handle any additional superimposed load from a second floor,” the report states.

Librarian Jean Keetch said options for expansion are being looked at.

“Unfortunately, the cost and amount of work required to build a new library is prohibitive and the empty buildings already here are not suitable.”

Keetch said staff is “making do” for now.

“Ultimately it will be the board’s decision,” she said.

Town accepts recreation master plan for info

The plan stated registered programming relies heavily on community volunteer groups for both planning and delivery and the town should continue to support the efforts of these groups and find resource conscious ways to enhance support.

Drop-in and leisure programs provided by the town are positive, but the town should continue to explore other facilities which can provide additional drop-in opportunities to residents.

Spontaneous use recreation and leisure opportunities in Rimbey are limited, but the potential exists to expand spontaneous use offerings. However, additional investment in staffing and infrastructure may be needed.

Physical and financial accessibility needs to be considered when planning future programming.

Museum hostess returns for a second summer

By June Norvila Having a repeat summer hostess/ tourist booth operator made it easier on both the Bentley Museum, which didn’t have to train a new person, and the summer employee who knew what was expected of the position.

Seventeen-year-old Kacey Maerz is back again cheerfully meeting and greeting people and doing all other tasks expected of her for the summer months.

After she had applied for the position, the museum board found out that the government STEP program had helped pay for their summer employee in the past was no longer being offered, and that left the museum scrambling a bit. The museum applied to the town for help in covering the cost and the town agreed so Kacey was informed she did have her summer job after all.

“I got my job back,” she said with obvious pleasure. “(After working here last year) I know more history about Bentley and the (Pico) house (that houses the main part of the museum) and everything. I like the job,” she says. “It is a good environment to work in. I like the people and they seem to like me.”

Another reason the Bentley School student, who is going into Grade 12, likes the job is “(w)hen it is not busy I can do other things like school stuff.”

She is working on a distance learn-

ing course that could end up helping her toward a social work degree if after graduating and taking a little time off to travel she decides to return to college.

“A lot has changed,’ Kacey said.

“There are more displays, the house has been painted, there are new artifacts, the new building is open, things are more spacious, the Ag building has changed, and there is more open area in the house too.”

“It is not as busy (so far) as last year,” Kacey has noticed. “Maybe it is the weather or maybe they (visitors to the area) saw the museum last summer.

When people do visit they seem to go down memory lane and really enjoy it.”

She knows more what to expect this year, unlike when the experience was new to her last year. “It will be especially busy again during fair and rodeo week,” she says and she is thinking about what to put on the float the museum will enter in the annual parade, this year holding with the Bentley Show & Shine theme.

A lot of tourist information and pamphlets are also available at the museum.

Bentley Museum summer hours are Wednesday through Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until after the September Labor Day long weekend. Admission is free.

Blindman Hall receives financial boost from Ponoka County

By Amelia Naismith After several setbacks Blindman Hall is receiving a $20,000 grant from Ponoka County to help finish the hall’s additions project.

In 2010 the Blindman River Community Hall Society decided their small yet active hall needed additional room, especially for storage.

“The main part of our hall needed to be added on to and our kitchen needed to be a little bit bigger so that we could have larger functions,” society president Irene Steeves said.

On the north side of the hall, the board decided to add 12 by 35 feet for storage and on the east side another 20 by 48 addition was planned.

Contractor Dwayne Smawley of Jazzie Builders, Bluffton, was hired for the project. “He has done a lot of work in our hall,” said Steeves.

“He is very good as our contactor,” she added.

counts the Blindman River Community Hall Society has fundraised approximately $40,000 for the hall’s additions.

Smawley quoted the price of the project at $64,524. “Right then and there we knew we did not have enough money in our account to be able to finish this project,” said Steeves.

The society applied for a provincial Community Initiatives Program (CIP) grant. Winter passed with no real progress on the project. “In July 2011 CIP notified us that our application had been reviewed and we did not receive it.”

The Blindman River Community Hall Society also wanted to apply for the community spirit program. However, due to the provincial government’s large deficit the $15 million program was cut this year.

Steeves said they decided to have the contractor work on the inside of the hall through another winter, removing the old stage and other smaller projects.

“He did that . . . He did not come back to our hall until July (2012) to start working on our hall again,” said Steeves.

The project moved slowly and pumps had to be

Before the third winter Smawley had erected 4-ft cross walls, flooring and started on the addition on the north side of the hall.

For the additions, Steeves says the hall and the contractor didn’t use blueprints. “What we had to have is a drawing of what our footings would be and what our walls would be. That was all we needed to do our additions.”

On May 2, 2013 Smawley email Steeves saying he wouldn’t be able to finish the job; she believes the decision was tied to family reasons.

“Being no blueprints, nothing, it’s all in his head; we had to get another contractor,” said Steeves.

We still have to pay for our electrician and to do the inside of the hall,” said Steeves The grant won’t completely pay for the rest of the project but will ensure the hall is able to pay to the point that the hall’s additions are functioning.

“I guess one of the principles that we’ve always had is helping communities that help themselves and you folks aren’t coming with a blank slate, you’ve actually been obliviously fundraising for quite a few years,” said Coun. Paul Payson.

To date, $33,218 has been spent on the additions project.

“The other thing I would like to mention is that we are out in the west part of the county of Ponoka and we have a lot of — I’m not going to say vandalism — as much as things beings stolen. It’s really bad out our way,” said Steeves.

The hall uses interior and exterior cameras but about three weeks ago the exterior camera was knocked down and stolen.

Like they’ve recently done for Liberty Hall Ponoka County decided to cover Blindman Hall’s contraction insurance. “I think that goes without saying we should cover this as well,” said CAO Charlie Cutforth.

Predeceased by his parents Peter and Alice Steinhauer and by a sister Joan Norris, Gary is survived by his loving wife Valrie of Hoadley, three sons; Jaime (Sharleen) and family of Edmonton, Ron McLaren (Megan) and family of Calgary, Mike Rodgers (Kristi) of Calgary, and by one daughter Shelly Mayer of Edmonton. Gary also leaves to mourn five grandchildren, two sisters Peggy Steinhauer of British Columbia and Susan Entner and family of British Columbia, and two brother-in-laws; Carl (Bonnie) Richardson of Hoadley and Don (Renee) Mason of Wainright, Alberta.

Gary served his country with pride and honor as a member of the Canadian Military from 1962 - 1992.

A Celebration of Gary’s life will be held from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #36 in Rimbey, Albert on Saturday July 27, 2013 at 1:30 pm.

If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made in support of our troops to the Canadian Poppy Fund through any branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
