“We had a great weekend,” Close said. “All the musicians did a great job — special thanks to Ray’s Music for the audio and keeping the show going Saturday night after a sensational 54-40 performance.

There is a stream that gathers itself, droplet by droplet, from the melt water that trickles from the north face of Fisher Peak.

From there it gains momentum, gravity pulling it down off the flanks of that lofty mountain, into the cool darkness of a valley of moss covered stone, cedar trees, and shadow.

With ever more urgency it rushes on, bigger now, its once quietly burbling voice raised loud in a frothing refrain. It is the song of Boulder Creek.

Yes that’s right, gentle reader, I have my own creek — or that is to say, it is from this little torrent that I derived my human given name. You see in my puppyhood I was cared for by humans with a connection to this particular creek and they decided to name me Boulder in its honour. It has a nice ring to it, if I do say so myself.

As the fates would have it, my now human pack leader also has an affinity to this wild little creek. He has made a multitude of trips into the drainage, exploring its length from where it joins Wild Horse Creek all the way up to its headwaters and the aforementioned droplets of melt water. He also enjoys traipsing about on the peaks and ridges that make up the rim of its basin and that is exactly where we found ourselves just a few weeks back.

Our pack that day was made up of myself, my human, and his son — a strapping young lad called Sean. It was my human who had picked out that particular name for the boy. A nice enough moniker, I suppose, but certainly not in the same league as Boulder. I guess I should count my blessings that my previous humans had far superior naming skills to that of my current dude.

Sean and his dad had chauffeured me up the rough old road to the trailhead in high style. They took turns driving the side by side, all terrain vehicle that my human had christened “The Toad” (again, naming things is not this man’s strong suit), while I rode in the specially outfitted rear. Padded with foam and blankets and surround by custom-made stock racks, it made for a fine commute indeed.

The high road: A seemingly endless opportunity for ridge walking.

Once the Toad was safely parked, packs were shouldered and we began the steep climb that would take us to that day’s goal, the wide-open ridges on the north side of the basin. Due to the rigors of this particular expedition, Dog Tylor had stayed at home. Though her heart still yearned to play in the mountains, her old bones and aging joints limited her to less demanding jaunts. We boys, though, were up for it. At least Sean and I were.

After less than half an hour, the old dude was beginning to fall behind and by the way he was puffing, was probably wishing he had stayed at home, curled up on the couch with Taylor.

Before long, however, we reached the top of the ridge and found ourselves surrounded with breath-stealing mountain views. Re-energized with the adrenaline that such scenery can induce, the old boy picked up his pace and pretty much kept up with us youngsters as we traversed the ridgeline further and further.

The ridge and its possibilities for exploration seemed to go on forever. Unfortunately, as usual, we ran out of time before we ran out of ridge, and we began making our way back down the mountain towards the Toad.

Again, the old fella fell a bit behind and Sean and I had to wait for him, but we didn’t mind. It gave us a chance to catch our own breath, and listen for snatches of my namesake’s song, the sound of water over stone, that would occasionally drift up to us from the valley far below.

60 Years have passed since Graduation

‘Twas 1953, Coronation year, when the last class graduating from the former Kimberley High School held their Graduation exercises.

Now 60 years later they gathered in Kimberley during Julyfest 2013 to reminisce and

celebrate that occasion again and to do some further bonding.

They came from many corners of BC & and Alberta and even from as far away as St. Bruno, Quebec. Hailing from La Belle Province, Ellen (Van Oene) Poulin brought stories of her life in the East and reminisced about her earlier life in Kimberley’s ‘Pig Pen Alley’ area. Jack Wil-

son, travelling from Langley, BC, was able to get re-acquainted with his older classmates as well as relive some of his memories of living on the Bench. “Remember when” and Do You Remember ... were the key words for the whole weekend. From Grande Prairie, Alberta, came Bill & Joan (Howe) Case, to again visit friends.

ago when this class celebrated their Jubilee year.

Also returning was Pauline (Muddyman) DiPasquale from Portland, Oregon.

The Class of ’53 gathered at the Spirit of the Mountain Resort for a Meet & Greet Buffet on Friday evening. Mingling, nibbling and chatting, were interspersed with snapping pictures.

2013 JulyFest success From Page 1 Guarnary and Clarke are exhausted but extremely pleased with the weekend.

“It went very, very well,” Guarnary said. “We are getting really positive feedback.”

Clarke says the Saturday night 54-40 show was excellent.

“It’s amazing how many of their songs you didn’t know you know,” Clarke said. “Everyone knew all the songs. It was terrific.”

This was Clarke’s first time coordinating the Fest.

Lessons learned?

“Better shoes,” he said.

“I have more blisters on my feet.”

Clarke says he really wants to shout out to all the volunteers. “They did an unbelievable job, and made it work for everybody.”

Newel says that from a policing standpoint, JulyFest is the biggest event of the year.

“From a policing perspective Julyfest is the biggest. We have a huge number of people congregating in a small area with a good supply of alcohol.”

It’s normally a recipe for trouble, he says, but not this year.

Participants were well-behaved for the most part and a large number of them thanked us. Everybody seemed to be having fun and even those that had alcohol dumped out and received violation tickets took it in good stride.

They were released after a few hours of sobering up.

Noise complaints peaked

on Sunday morning after the event finished. It seemed a number of people were having such a good time they wanted to carry on. Unfortunately their neighbours were not invited so they decided to invite the police. Again, everybody was good about it and hopefully everybody was able to sleep.

Newel says police would like to thank the Chamber of Commerce, specifically the organizers for their hard work and for putting on a great event.

“But if it wasn’t for the participants this wouldn’t have taken place. You people were great, I hope you all had a great time and we will see you again next year.”

What’s Up?

Letters to the Editor Ultrasound

Your paper recently included a flyer which asks in bold letters: “Are YOU at risk for a Stroke?” We are then informed that “stroke screening” was coming to Cranbrook on July 22.

This company is one of many worldwide which is making money by frightening people who have no symptoms into paying for ultrasound imaging of their arteries. What is not said is that there is no evidence that treating an ultrasound image improves life expectancy or prevents stroke.

For further information on why this is so, visit the website www. privatehealthscreen.org. This website was set up by British physicians who were concerned about the adverse consequences of ultrasound “screening” such as this.

Anyone concerned about stroke or cardiovascular disease can consult their family doctor and obtain appropriate advice and treatment in B.C.

Ultrasound imaging of vessels is available when medically indicated. The general public should avoid using “services” which are not medically indicated. Screening for disease is a complex issue, and testing which has been shown to be effective is part of our public health system (pap smears, fecal occult blood, etc).

Routine ultrasound imaging of vessels on people without symptoms has been shown to be of no value.

What IS of value is discussing your health with your doctor and following recommendations to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (including stroke) by controlling blood pressure, obesity and diabetes and getting regular exercise.

Past experiments

Last Thursday (July 18) I was enjoying making dinner

while listening to the radio, when the announcer broadcast his opinion that basically First Nations are not justified in seeking an apology for recent revelations that aboriginal children interned in Mission Schools were used as unwitting guinea pigs for nutritional experiments, as the government already apologized years ago and an apology does nothing anyway. I was rather startled at having this offensive opinion broadcast to the community with no opportunity for rebuttal.

Firstly Mr. DJ, the apology issued by the government after many years of lobbying was for the child abductions, horrendous conditions, gross negligence, horrific abuse, and tragic loss of life suffered by aboriginal communities. It in no way accommodated the recently uncovered secret that they were used for medical experiments.

Perhaps you do not fully grasp the gravity of the effect of cultural genocide and how

much pain this new revelation brings to First Nations communities. However your trite opinion that ‘they really don’t need another apology’ seems unkind and arrogant at the very least.

One of the first steps in healing is an admission from the offending party and sincere apology for their actions. Why is it so difficult to acknowledge that tragic wrongs were done, which were ill-founded and completely regrettable? Why shouldn’t First Nations get an apology for it?

It is unfortunate that such an ignorant, defensive, and compassionless mindset exists amongst some non-aboriginal people. I do not feel it is appropriate for the radio to broadcast such ignorance. I really do not appreciate being subjected to such drivel. With so many great internet radio stations, there are many other options!

Can the Motor City rise again?

A s it happens, I was in Detroit this month. I went to see the art and the architecture, domains in which Detroit is still one of the richest cities in the United States. It’s broken, and it’s broke, and now it’s officially bankrupt too. But bankruptcy is actually a device for escaping from unpayable debt.

All over the world, Detroit’s bankruptcy is being used as an excuse to pore over what’s sometimes called “ruin porn”: pictures of the rotting, empty houses that still stand and the proud skyscrapers that have already been torn down. There’s even a self-guided tour of “the ruins of Detroit” available on the internet: people take a melancholy pleasure in contemplating the calamitous fall of a once-great city.

Two-thirds of Detroit’s population have fled in the past fifty years, but there were specific reasons why Detroit fell into decline, and there are also reasons to believe that it could flourish again – not as a major manufacturing centre, perhaps, but “major manufacturing centres” probably don’t have a bright long-term future anywhere.

There are other ways to flourish, and Detroit has some valuable resources.

The events that triggered the city’s decline are well known. Large numbers of African-Americans from the southern states migrated to Detroit to meet the demand for factory workers during and after the Second World War. Being mostly unskilled, they started in the worst jobs — and even after they had acquired the skills, they stayed in low-paying jobs because of racial prejudice.

Spurned by the unions and victimised by a racist police force, they eventually rioted in the summer of 1967. Brutal policing made matters worse and hundreds were killed, but the worst consequence

was the fear that the violence engendered.

The great majority of the whites just left left town I first went to Detroit a couple of months after the riots, and driving into the city the fear was actually visible. The traffic lights are spaced far apart on Woodward Avenue, and as each light turned green all the cars would accelerate away — and then, if the next light was still red, they would slow more and Gwynne more until they were barely crawling, but they dared Dyer not stop for fear of being attacked.

Then, finally, the light would turn green, and they would race away through the intersection — only to go through the whole process again as they approached the next light. It was this unreasoning fear that caused the massive “white flight” to the suburbs and the hollowing out of Detroit.

The big automobile companies also took fright, and the new car plants were built elsewhere. As the jobs disappeared and the population dropped, the tax base fell even faster, for most of the people left behind in the city were poor or unemployed African-Americans. The city could no longer afford to provide good police or medical services, so even more people left.

This vicious circle has lasted half a century, exacerbated by much corruption and maladministration. This month’s declaration of bankruptcy is a brutal measure, for much of the debt being repudiated is the pensions of city employees, but it may give the city’s government enough leeway to begin rebuilding public services. If they are restored, much else could follow.

Let me explain what brought me to Detroit early this month. We were doing what we dubbed the “Rust Belt Art and Architecture Tour”: driving from Buffalo to Cleveland and then to Detroit, ending up

in Chicago.

All these cities took a terrible beating as the industries they were built on died or moved overseas (except Chicago, which is “too big to fail”). But three generations ago, when they were the industrial heartland of the United States, they were very rich – at just the right time.

The first decades of the 20th century were the heyday of art deco, the most beautiful architectural style of the modern era. That was also the period when newly rich captains of industry could scoop up bucket-loads of new European and American art: impressionist, expressionist, abstract, the lot — and they lived mostly in what are now the Rust Belt cities.

So they put up dozens of art deco towers: the Guaranty Building in downtown Detroit is my candidate for the world’s most beautiful office building. They filled their homes with best of modern art – and, in the end, donated most of it to the local art galleries. Even in Detroit, where so much has been lost, more than half of those buildings are still there. So is all of the art.

Other cities would kill for these assets.

In a post-industrial economy where people have more choice about where they live, they are assets that can actually attract population – especially since, in Detroit’s case, the people who left didn’t go far. Most of them are still out there in the suburbs that surround Detroit.

The city of Detroit’s population has fallen from 2 million to 700,000 over the past fifty years, but the metropolitan area’s population has stayed stable at around four and a half million for all of that time.

The job, really, is to bridge the devastated middle ring of low-income Detroit housing and reconnect the outer suburbs with the city centre. Detroit can rise again. It just takes the right strategy.

Green MLA on coal and controversy After climate scientist-turned-Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver had a taste of debate in the B.C. legislature, I asked him for his impressions on that and other issues.

Excerpts from that discussion: TF: You did a study comparing burning all the world’s coal reserves and all oil reserves, showing how big coal really is. The federal government says that when you add up what’s actually being used in North America, carbon emissions from coal are about 30 times more than from oil.

Now we have a symbolic coal export ban in Vancouver, which doesn’t apply to Port Moody or Point Roberts or Prince Rupert. Do you think there’s any significance to this?

AW: There is no question that the biggest issue around is coal, because coal use is on the rise world-wide. Not in the United States, because they’re converting [power production] to natural gas. This is why American producers are saying, let’s ship it to Asia. California says no, Oregon says no, Washington says no. Vancouver says no, British Columbia, not sure.

It’s pushing us to start thinking about what I think is going to be the greatest industrial revolution the world has ever seen, which is transformation of energy systems away from our combustion approach, which is essentially what we’ve been doing since we were in caves. We’ve gone from burning wood to now fossil wood, and fossil plants and fossil algae, to a much more modern era of production of energy through natural means, solar, wind, geo-

thermal etc.

TF: Liquified natural gas. The NDP says they are absolutely in favour of that now.

AW: I have questioned the economics of it from day one. There’s a market differential that exists now. There’s that small window because Japan is moving from nuclear to natural gas. But we’re way behind everyone else.

TF: Thirty years ago, Japan played Australia and B.C. off for metallurgical BC VIEWS coal. Those northeast B.C. coal mines are back up and Tom running again, but you’re Fletcher seeing a similar thing here?

AW: Yes. And if we start shipping natural gas to Asia … the Asian price comes down, the North American price goes up. British Columbians haven’t been told that.

TF: How has the legislature session been for you?

AW: I sit there and watch the two parties. Rhetorical question, condescending answer. Rhetorical question, condescending answer. And I hope more British Columbians watch this, because this needs to change. And I think it can change.

TF: The NDP opposition decides when you and Delta South Independent Vicki Huntington get your occasional moments in question period?

AW: Yes, and if I’ve asked it’s been no problem.

TF: Grudgingly no doubt. If the NDP had their way, the closest Green Party member would be in Holland.

AW: [Laughs] Yes. Certainly not in North America. There’s this sense of enti-

And I sense that the B.C. Liberals very much like our existence, as being not NDP. The reality is, we take as many Liberal votes, if not more. It’s because what it means to be ‘green’ has moved out of what the NDP view as green, which is a tree hugger. It’s kids going to school, talking about conservation, and going home to talk to their parents. That’s where our votes are coming from.

TF: Are you going to be found standing in front of a coal train any time soon?

AW: No, never. They asked me to, and I said no, because I don’t believe in civil disobedience.

For the first time in 16 years, a Cranbrook team made it into the JulyFest soccer tournament ‘A’ division final, but couldn’t fight their way to the championship in a 3-0 loss to a team out of Idaho.

Following a round robin record of a win and two losses, the Unicorns FC headed into elimination games on Sunday with a win over Tizoc’s Warriors and the Nelson Net Preda-

tors, which put them into the final against the Green Monarchs.

“The gas tank’s a little on empty by that sixth game and it just wasn’t there, it wasn’t clicking for us, we had a couple bad bounces and we lost in the finals,” said AJ Wheaton.

Led from the midfield by Chris Rushworth, who was named the team MVP after the final game, the Unicorns tried to be the first local team to win the tournament since

1997.

The Unicorns lost their opener to the Montana Rapids, but rebounded against the Net Predators. They closed out the round-robin with an-

other loss to their eventual opponents in the final.

However, the Unicorns hit their stride on Sunday, blitzing past two teams for a rematch with the Green Monarchs.

“It was quick-paced game, quite quick actually. Those boys are fast, it was mostly middle of the field, middle of the pitch play,” said Wheaton.

“But it was a fastpaced game, lots of subs and the heat was

just intense. The boys were running on E, mostly pushing through on heart, I think.”

The women’s team, playing as the Narwals, made it into the semifinals, as they also participated in the ‘A’ division.

A few other local teams played in both the men and women’s ‘B’ and ‘C’ and Masters divisions, as the tournament featured 61 squads that came in from B.C., Alberta and the northern U.S.

Roller derby makes JulyFest debut TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

Roller Derby made its debut at the Kimberley Civic Centre on Friday night as part of the JulyFest-ivities and it came right down to the wire as the bout was decided in the final minute when the Meanie Pachinis completed a 174172 comeback against the Belles of the Balls.

Decked out in red, the Belles of the Balls hit the track and built up a commanding lead, while the Meanie Pachinis, in green, chipped

away to end the first half at a score of 89-73.

The Belles of the Balls kept up their dominance for much of the second half, but the Meanie Pachinis were able to close the gap to within a ten-point spread with two minutes to go.

The Meanie Pachinis pulled out all the stops and the team’s jammer deftly moved through the pack in order to make up the remaining points by the time the clocked ticked down to end the bout.

The NHL’s Central Scouting 2013-14 list has been released and Kootenay Ice captain Sam Reinhart sits on the top.

The list is comprised of players that Central Scouting believes are first, second or third round potential in the 2014 NHL Draft.

Reinhart has spent the last two seasons with the Kootenay Ice, setting records as a 16-year-old rookie two years ago and leading the team in points last year, with 35 goals and 50 assists.

Reinhart’s two older brothers, Max and Griffin, have already been through the draft process, as Max was taken in the third round in 2010, while Griffin was selected fourth overall in 2012.

“He has a complete game at both ends of the ice,” said Central Scouting’s Peter Sullivan. “He does everything well. He won’t get you overly excited, but from a coaching perspective, he’s the guy you want on the ice in critical situations. He’s your go-to guy and team leader and is just going to be consistent at the junior level, and eventually the pro level.”

Also appearing on the list among 14 other WHLers is Kootenay Ice defenceman Tanner Faith, who just finished his rookie season last year, playing most of it alongside veteran WHL graduate Joey Leach.

Braun suspended for rest of season for drug violations NEW YORK - Former National League MVP Ryan Braun was suspended without pay for the rest of the season and the post-season Monday in the first penalty following Major League Baseball’s investigation of the Florida clinic accused of distributing performance-enhancing drugs.

Braun accepted the penalty.

“I am not perfect. I realize now that I have made some mistakes. I am willing to accept the consequences of those actions,” he said in a statement.

MBL attempted to suspend Braun for a positive drug test following the 2011 season, but an arbitrator overturned the penalty because the Milwaukee star’s urine sample was not handled as specified by baseball’s drug agreement.

Braun, injured Yankees star Alex Rodriguez and more than a dozen players were targeted by MLB following a report by Miami New Times in January that they had been connected with Biogenesis of America, a now-closed anti-aging clinic.

MLB Commissioner Bud Selig announced the penalty Monday, citing Braun for multiple unspecified “violations” of baseball’s drug program and labour contract. Braun will miss the Milwaukee Brewers’ final 65 games without pay, costing him about $3 million of his $8.5 million salary.

by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My daughter has been dating the same guy for 11 years. Three years ago, she purchased a townhouse, and he moved in. He has terrible sleep habits. He claims his “internal sleep clock” is not in sync with the rest of the world. He stays up most nights playing on his computer and has a difficult time waking in the morning. He then spends his weekends trying to catch up on his sleep, staying in bed until late afternoon. He claims this is why he has yet to complete his college degree. He has a dead-end job because they tolerate his hours.

My daughter has done research on sleep disorders and offered him names of doctors and clinics in the area that specialize in helping people, but he refuses to go.

My daughter has a fantastic job. She is intelligent, beautiful, outgoing and fun, and has a wide circle of friends who apparently make up for what she doesn’t get from Rip Van Winkle. This lopsided relationship is not what I had hoped for her. She deserves so much more. She and I have had many discussions about this, and at one point it negatively affected our relationship. Since then, I’ve tried to keep my thoughts to myself.

She recently told me that Rip expects to inherit some money from an aunt who recently died. He claims he will use the money to buy an engagement ring and pay for online college classes. Frankly, I would prefer she never marry him. How do I prepare myself to react to a possible engagement? -- Sleepyhead’s Mother-In-Law-To-Be Dear SMILTB: Sleep disorders can be serious, but the fact that Rip Van Winkle has no interest in seeing a doctor means he would rather maintain the status quo. You already know your daughter isn’t inclined to listen to your opinions about this guy. So practice smiling in front of the mirror, because there isn’t much else you can do. We hope Rip Van Winkle has some redeeming qualities to make up for his lack of ambition, and one of them may be that he loves your daughter a great deal. Please try to focus on those good qualities and accept her decision with grace and fortitude.

Dear Annie: I recently asked a good friend to accompany me to a store where I needed to make a return. I wasn’t sure the manager would be cooperative and wanted my friend for support. She declined.

I was hurt and now wonder whether she is as good of a friend as I thought. I would have done it for her had she asked. Am I making too much of this? -- What Are Friends For? Dear What: Yes. Your friend may have her own issues about returning items, and this particular request may have made her terribly uncomfortable. Our friends cannot be all things to us. If she is otherwise good to you, please let her off the hook for this type of activity.

Dear Annie: I had to respond to “Frustrated Cook,” who admonished children who were picky eaters. My son was like that. Rather than create tension, I decided to cook what he would eat, even if it meant cooking a different dish. I remember my relatives giving me “the look” because they thought I was enabling him and that it was my fault he had such a limited palate.

As an adult, he is still picky, but now he can explain it to me. He says the texture of certain foods has always been a huge issue for him. He will now try different foods within limits. But he has expressed his gratitude to me for not forcing him to eat or go without.
