Herons find new home in Burnaby Deer Lake now a major nesting site for protected species Wanda Chow

There have been at least two injuries so far due to avian sibling rivalry and city officials are hoping there won’t be any man-made ones as the Great Blue Heron’s nesting season at Deer Lake comes to an end in the next several weeks. The cottonwood trees around Deer Lake have become a major nesting site for the protected species, with about 126 nests this year, up significantly from about 66 last year, said Burnaby birdwatcher George Clulow. The increase is believed at least partly due
to a heron colony abandoning a longstanding nesting site by the Mary Hill Bypass in Port Coquitlam in response to construction nearby for the new Port Mann Bridge, Clulow said, adding word apparently spreads quickly in the heron community about good sites. They’re a species at risk in the Georgia Basin, whose numbers are declining due to loss of habitat to development. “It’s a fantastic thing for Burnaby to have this colony that’s grown in about six years to the size it is now,” he said. “It started off with just two nests in the park and moved to its current location and it’s grown since then.” Dozens of nests can be seen high up in the cottonwoods around Deer Lake Avenue and

Price Street, he said, although the adult herons themselves aren’t always around. They’ll fly far afield, to the Fraser River, Burrard Inlet, Still Creek and elsewhere, in search of food for their young who wait patiently back in the nests. The racket they cause when the parents return with their meal is one indication of how competitive the siblings can be, said Christine Ensing, fisheries habitat officer for the City of Burnaby. Another sign is the fact that those whose eggs hatch first often throw their weight around in the nest, sometimes even pushing their weaker siblings out. And once they’re out, there’s no way for them to get back in. Please see hERONS, A3

The National Energy Board (NEB) may think Chevron Canada’s Burnaby refinery should consider receiving crude oil by tanker ships, but that’s not really an option, says the refinery’s spokesperson. When the NEB turned down Chevron’s application for priority destination designation (PDD) access to Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline, it said in its reasons, “the Board believes that no option should be completely ruled out by Chevron in mitigating its supply risk for the future, including a potential waterborne option, the Secondary Market, Westridge Dock bids, and any other option that Chevron can develop to avoid PDD.” “That is not being actively considered,” said Ray Lord, spokesperson for Chevron’s Burnaby refinery, of receiving crude by tanker ships. “We’ve never really been configured to receive crude by marine.” Please see REvIEW, A4

Herons take up residence at Deer Lake ⫸
continued from FRONT
At least two of the baby herons have been injured as a result and taken to Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. at Burnaby Lake where they are rehabilitated, said Ensing, who stressed that those not injured are left to their own devices. “It’s life. If they’re out of their nest hopefully they’ll learn to cope.” The fledglings will soon learn to fly, leave the nest and fend for themselves. But while they may know how to fly out of the way of a car or other danger, in those early days they “don’t necessarily know that they have to,” she said. Motorists are being asked to exercise caution when driving near Deer Lake and people are asked

not to get too close to the nests or approach the longlegged birds which would be distressing to them. The view is better from the trails anyway, Clulow said.
And as with all wildlife, don’t feed them. There’s plenty of natural food for them around, including voles, fish, snakes, and even the highly-invasive bullfrog.
While considered nonmigratory, the herons’ range stretches into Washington state and each March they can be expected to return to their nesting sites. “They’re
Air 1 copter helps out New Westminster police combined with Air 1 RCMP regional helicopter to arrest two people suspected of stealing a vehicle in Burnaby. About 11:10 a.m.., a NWPD officer spotted a GMC Jimmy that had been stolen from Burnaby the day before parked in the 400-block of Columbia. A woman was in the passenger seat so the officer called for help in putting the vehicle under surveillance. After the suspect driver arrived, plainclothes officers of the NWPD street crime unit and Air 1 tracked the vehicle as it made its way through New West and into Burnaby. After the vehicle was parked in the 7400-block of Southwynde Avenue, the occupants got out and as they walked away they were arrested without incident. A 29-year-old Surrey man was held in custody pending a court appearance Wednesday morning. NWPD StaffSgt. Paul Hyland said by using Air 1 and unmarked police vehicles the possibility of a dangerous highspeed pursuit was avoided.
very faithful to the breeding colony,” he said, noting the herons were around Mary Hill Bypass for upward of 30 years before moving on. Interestingly, the Deer Lake heron colony was made possible by a decision not made by Burnaby city hall back in the 1980s, Clulow noted in an April post on his birding blog (http://burnabybirdguy. wordpress.com/). That’s when the city considered turning the stand of cottonwoods where they now make their home into a parking lot. “Thankfully, this cityinspired plan for the park is long abandoned, and we now live in more enlightened times in Burnaby,” Clulow wrote. twitter.com/WandaChow
Mother pleas for help solving son’s murder
RCMP
John William Hanna was found dead in South Burnaby July 16, 2009.
Four years after he was killed, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is appealing for help in solving the murder of John William Hanna. Hanna, 25, reportedly of Surrey, was found in a burnt out car on July 16, 2009 in the 5600-block of Clinton Street, at Plum Avenue, alongside Clinton elementary in Burnaby. He was killed not by the fire but from gunshot wounds, “John made a bad choice and he was lured by people he trusted into an unsafe situation, not knowing what he was getting into,” said Hanna’s mother, who does not want to be identified, in a statement. “John did not understand the risk,
or quite possibly the violence that people in this world use so casually. When I see young men who are a similar age to John, I pray that they won’t be influenced by others and make a wrong decision that can affect their lives.” Her son’s life held so much promise before he was killed, she said. “John did not deserve to be wiped off the face of the earth in this brutal manner. He just turned 25 and had so much of life waiting for him. The day we buried him was the day he was supposed to start university.” His mother said if anyone has information on the murder, “I beg you to come forward and share what you know so that the police can take
action.” She is still “very devastated” not having any closure with his death and many unanswered questions. “No family deserves to go through this.” IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Jennifer Pound said, “The manner in which John was killed and disposed of is disturbing on many levels and those with information about his murder are carrying a dark and heavy burden. It’s due time that those individuals come forward and speak with IHIT.” Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the IHIT Tip Line at 1-800-551-IHIT (4448) or, to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

30,000 to 35,000 barrels per day (bpd) from the pipeline, in the current apportioned environment, Lord said. While it needs a minimum of 40,000 bpd to operate 24/7, that’s “not a sustainable level of production.” Since May, its crude supply has been augmented by about 6,500 bpd delivered through a new rail facility it invested in for the refinery, with another 1,000 bpd arriving by tanker truck from Langley, where the crude first arrives by rail. That has brought its supply somewhere between 40,000 bpd and its maximum capacity of 55,000 bpd, although Lord declined to elaborate due to industry competition issues. As for the NEB directing Kinder Morgan to review its apportionment process, Lord said Chevron has been a customer for a long time and is prepared to work with the pipeline operator to address the challenges being caused by the way pipeline volume is allocated. Lord stressed the Burnaby refinery is somewhat unique because its current infrastructure limits its ability to receive crude from sources other than the pipeline. Western Canadian crude is generally delivered over land routes, making the marine option “not realistic.” Never mind that, as Chevron told the NEB, there would be community opposition to increased tanker traffic in Burrard Inlet. “We’re in an urban setting here, we’re built on a hillside, there’s Buy your physical constraints tickets toda y! and other challenges,” Lord said. “It really is a constrained situation in terms of alternative methods.” Kinder Morgan Swangard Stadium Canada respects the NEB’s decision, said Tuesday, August 27, 5:30-9pm company spokesperson Swangard Stadium | Kingsway at Boundary Andy Galarnyk, in an Tickets: General Admission: $10 emailed statement. ADRIAN RAESIDE:
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Vote not sure thing B.C. is famed around the world for the quality of its marijuana, and people here buy, sell, grow and consume it mostly without fear of serious consequences from the law. Elections B.C. has approved Dana Larsen’s drive for a referendum on decriminalizing marijuana possession – a reminder pot remains illegal, and unlike our neighbour in Washington state, our province and country remain far away from laws that take drug profits away from criminals. Any move to shake up drug laws in this country is seen as a good thing. But pot smokers shouldn’t have a victory toke yet – it’s not clear this referendum will even get off the ground, and, if it does, whether the province will give it the time of day. Similar to the drive to oust the HST, Larsen and his supporters need to collect signatures of at least 10 per cent of elected voters in each of the 85 ridings. Many people in B.C. may support laxer laws around possessing marijuana (or buying, selling and growing for that matter), but the issue is unlikely to inflame the same passions as a government perceived as dishonest and shifting tax burdens from business to citizens with HST. The drive to create a marijuana referendum could help to get voting-adverse young adults more engaged in the political life of B.C. At the risk of glib stereotyping, hopefully the referendum advocates stay focused and organized, and aren’t smoking what they are trying to legalize. If the referendum were to succeed anywhere in Canada, it should be B.C. But even if Larsen wins, the victory will be symbolic and non-binding – the B.C. Liberals don’t have to support the vote. B.C. may have a permissive pot culture, but this isn’t the U.S., where, for better or worse, voter propositions are binding. And unlike Canadian provinces, states like Washington and Colorado will defy their federal government based on the will of the people. – Victoria News/Black Press

Freedom or safety, can’t have both The democratized world is at a crossroads, in which one route leads to freedom, the other to safety. Embracing one comes at the expense of the other, and neither includes guarantees. Such has become even more evident as we argue over the actions of National Security Association whistleblower Edward Snowden, who revealed last month that his own U.S. government was spying en masse on its citizens’ electronic communications and on its economic partners. The debate crosses party lines, with nearly equal numbers throughout the political spectrum calling his actions either heroic or treasonous. For many, loss of freedoms is far worse than a potential risk of our security. They heed the witch hunts of the past; they bemoan an Orwellian present; and they fear a dystopian future. For others, giving up personal privacy is the price of protection in these turbulent times. They encourage the government to monitor our texts, emails and conversations, ensuring it’s on record who the bad guys are.
Lance Peverley Both sides have merit. Yet both scare the hell out of me. I don’t understand those who put all their faith in officials; so many conversations and deals are made behind the scenes. Nor do I understand faith in the rabble; again, you and I aren’t privy to the shenanigans of our leaders – self-appointed or otherwise. Individually, we are so consumed with our own thoughts and fears that it barely registers the enemy is already on both sides of the gate. Most of us will agree there’s a price to pay for living in a civilized society. We obey its laws, we follow protocol and we understand free speech and other rights have their limits. Yet, those who have faith in the leaders of the so-called free world would do well to remember these 14 words uttered again and again

not so long ago: “Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?” Despite extremes in their partisan views, it wouldn’t be difficult – depending on which country you’re in and who’s in charge at any given moment – to imagine the word “Communist” replaced with “Labour…” Or “Liberal…” Or “Tea…” Thanks to advances in technology, they no longer have to ask – and you certainly don’t need to tell – to have your politics, your faith and your sexuality on display behind what are, for now, closed doors. Then again, do we really want independent whistleblowers to decide our individual and collective fates? Does it make sense military secrets are transmitted to the masses, potentially endangering our loved ones? Should all investigative techniques be made public, driving would-be terrorists deeper underground? In the days since last spring’s Boston Marathon bombing, we’ve heard of at least two planned

terror attacks on Canadian soil – and others abroad – that were reportedly thwarted, in part, by surveillance and subterfuge. In each case, cyberspace teemed with speculation and condemnation from all sides, questioning the veracity of official and unofficial accounts, labelling one another conspiracists and patsies, and accusing each other of groupthink. Those same texts, tweets and posts are, no doubt, being filed away – along with our phone records – for later analyses, thanks to elected leaders that have lied for a greater good. The question is clear: Do we trust the anarchists or our governments? In one of these worlds, people fear misinformation; in the other, they fear too much information. If you can answer unequivocally and without hesitation, you just might want to keep your thoughts to yourself. Lance Peverley is editor of the Peace Arch News.

Re: Get ready for Hydro rate hikes (B.C. Views, July 10). While NDP energy critic John Horgan asserts there is no business case for a nation building project like the Northwest Transmission Line, a line that will bring power to a huge part of the province currently running off diesel generators, our government believes investments such as this are exactly what BC Hydro should be doing. This project will open up world class mineral deposits and support new mines, like Red Chris, one of the top 10 copper gold deposits in the world. In fact, the Mining Association of BC estimates the line could attract more than $15 billion in mining investment, creating up to 10,000 jobs and generating $300 million in annual tax revenues. None of this happens unless we build the line to provide the power

Re: Get ready for Hydro rate hikes (B.C. Views, July 10). Yes, the BC Hydro rate increase tsunami is coming after the earthquake of BC government debt. This will hit lower income people – hard. All levels of government are increasing fees and service rates rather than raise income taxes on those who can contribute more and pay more property tax. I don’t want to see any drastic action to increase job loss, but governments at all levels need to limit their spending growth to the level of inflation and get borrowing under control. Ethnic outreach returns to haunt premier Black Press
VICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark tried to put the pre-election ethnic outreach scandal behind her Tuesday, after the NDP raised new questions about an apparent effort to silence a former staff member’s complaints about B.C. Liberal Party work done by government staff. Clark told reporters Tuesday that emails from former B.C. Liberal staffer Brian Bonney were “totally inappropriate … and that’s why he no longer works for government.” The emails were included in 10,000 pages examined by a team of deputy ministers after the ethnic outreach program was revealed in a leaked memo in March. The plan to use government staff time to organize events in ethnic communities, then collect names for use in the B.C. Liberal election campaign, resulted in resignations of Clark’s deputy chief of staff and two other government employees, and Richmond Steveston MLA John Yap’s resignation as minister of state for multiculturalism. International Trade
Minister Teresa Wat, who took over responsibility for multiculturalism after the May election, repeated for a second day in question period that the investigation team looked at all documents and took appropriate action. The 10,000-page package includes a heavily censored string of emails that identifies Bonney as a participant. The first part appears directed at the unnamed staffer. “We will see if we can help find you something else – can you send me your resume? Send it to Brian also,” one email says. The next one says: “Have [former minister of state for multiculturalism and ex-Burnaby-Lougheed MLA] Harry Bloy meet with her and explain how doing anything would damage the premier and the party. Have him say how he will try to find her work and get her back involved. “If need be, offer x dollars per month to do non-public work up to the election (developing her database of potential supporters).” Clark said the email was examined in the review, led by her deputy minister

John Dyble, and there was no evidence it was ever acted upon. An official in the premier’s office said the woman discussed in the email was a temporary employee who left government employment in September 2012. In the legislature Tuesday, NDP critics demanded to know if the woman in the emails was offered another job, or if she was interviewed in the investigation.

WIN 4 PASSES
13-week competition sponsored by Kin’s Markets and Black Press finished fifth out of the 13 contestants from across Metro Vancouver. Each was challenged to change their eating habits and work on an exercise program to lose weight and improve their overall health. They also had to complete specified tasks to help raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society and keep an online diary. And while Palazzo didn’t win, she said she still feels like a winner. That’s because not only did she trim 8.6 per cent of her body fat, she also gained more self-confidence and became more aware of what she was eating. “It made me feel better about me,” said Palazzo. Which was exactly

her reason for entering the competition. Part of that new selfconfidence came from the compliments she received from friends and even strangers as she lost weight and toned her physique. It also came from the quiet pleasure she took in shopping for a new wardrobe because her old clothes were now
too large. But mostly it came from confronting challenges head on that she’d always avoided before. Like keeping an online diary, making public appearances, learning the finer points of producing and editing a video project. “There is a problem, find a solution and
act on finding a resolution,” said Palazzo. The public nature of losing weight and embarking on an exercise regime in a competition also proved to be a great motivator to stay on track, said Palazzo. “Doing this in the public eye means that I need to be accountable,” said Palazzo. “I am hoping I will be able to make a difference to the community and people’s lives.” And while the competition is officially over, Palazzo’s commitment to better health and fitness carries on. She’s eating better, paying attention to the nutritional labels on food. She’s eating out less. She’s keeping up her exercise regime. “It’ll never stop,” said Palazzo. “It’s a lifestyle change.”

And if the Cap’s name sounds familiar, that’s because Glen is one of Cap Hobbis’s sons who all decided to remain in the bike business their father had built since 1932 and grew to 15 stores across Metro Vancouver by the time he passed away in 1995. The stores were divvied up and each brother now runs his own separate
enterprise. The new Burnaby store is very much
the evolution of the Hobbis family’s 81 years in the bike
business, says its manager Shane Reid.

And while bike technology has progressed in leaps and bounds over that time, making sure customers get the bike that best fits their needs remains the core of their day-to-day operations. To help make that happen, the shop’s two storeys are lined with every kind of bike, from tiny run bikes without pedals for toddlers getting their first taste of two-wheeled freedom to monstrous downhill mountain bikes with heavy-duty shock absorbers to soften every bump and rock on the trails that snake down Mt. Fromme on the North Shore to all-purpose hybrids that are favoured by
commuters to lithe carbonfibre road bikes with electronic shifting that can cost as much as some of the cars that used to be sold from that building. “Every bike these days is very specific to the style of riding,” says Reid. That kind of segmentation of the market can be a challenge. Sales people have to ask a lot of questions to determine a customer’s cycling needs and style. The mechanics, who have moved into one of the service bays where cars used to get tune-ups, have to stay on top of the latest developments in technology. “The industry is always changing,” says Reid. “Every
category is changing.” Better, more specialized bikes, have also brought more people to cycling says Reid. That includes people returning to the sport when they discover today’s bikes are a long way from the heavy 10-speed they rode as a kid, boomers looking for exercise with less stress on their aging joints, commuters seeking a greener, healthier way to get to work and active people plugging into cycling’s growing community of club and mass participation rides. The most important thing, says Reid, is “you want to feel safe, you want to feel confident, whether it’s a $400 bike or a $1,400 bike.”

Cap’s Westwood Cycle - The Past and Present In 1932 Cap started his business in the family barn in Burquitlam... for many years he serviced all the bicycling needs of not just the Tri-Cities but the entire Lower Mainland. As his 4 boys and 2 nephews grew up, they too joined the business. Like most siblings no one wanted to take “orders” from their brother so Cap, always the creative one, opened up a store for each of them to manage. As time passed the four boys and two nephews bought out the business and expanded co-operatively throughout the Lower Mainland, into the Interior and on the Island. Eventually they all started looking for a simpler way of doing things... and brought those locations back to a manageable 5. Everyone’s families were growing up and it became clear that each of the owners had different visions for the company so “Cap’s” became separately owned and operated. Each Cap’s location is family owned and operated, just separate from each other. Confusing? Lets try to simplify it... Glen, Cap’s son, has worked in the family business his whole life, close to 50 years. Kelly, Glen’s wife, first met Glen in 1976 when she was hired by Cap to work in the bicycle store and help Glen in his new location at Como Lake Village in Coquitlam. She was a 15 year old who knew nothing about bicycles. Glen, frustrated that his dad would hire some young girl who didn’t know a thing about bicycles as his employee tossed her a rag and suggested she should dust bikes. After about 15 minutes he looked over, shook his head and said “what in the world are you doing”, Kelly’s reply was, “you said to dust bikes, so I’m dusting”... she was dusting the spokes... Glen knew immediately she was a keeper! A 15 year old Kelly became a cracker jack sales person. Her passion carried into bicycles but after she started dating Glen she thought she should find a career outside of the business and became a Registered Nurse. For close to 25 years Kelly worked as a RN while the two of them raised their 3 kids. When the business became separately owned and operated Glen suggested that Kelly come work with him and together they could have fun working in the bicycle business. With the kids grown up (or almost so) Kelly decided this would be a fun adventure. A cluttered greasy bike store was not going to do though. Kelly introduced clothing into the store and each of their locations has a clothing “store” within the bike store. Kelly wanted something unique in the clothing section so now designs several custom jerseys a year... check out the new BC jersey. Kelly also wanted to start some cycling groups. Big deal, you think, every store has cycling groups. Well, after years of looking after people who didn’t look after themselves and seeing the related diseases... compared to people who were active and eating right and how fast their recoveries were, she wanted to get people out cycling that were not athletes. She started her first “comfort” group in
2001. These were “middle aged” women that just were going out for a “comfort” bike ride. 10km, then stop for coffee. Well that grew from a “group” of 2 ladies to over 45. Most of those ladies still ride, but now they are on road bikes, doing the Wheel to Heal or Grand Fondo. Glen and Kelly initially just wanted a “ma & pa” bicycle shop... but it didn’t take long before they decided to expand their passion. Port Moody, Maple Ridge and now Burnaby. Quite simply they love working together. Although they have 4 stores and personally work at each of them... they are always together. AND, on vacation... what do they do? Well bicycle of course. They have cycled through Vermont, done the California Coast several times, Napa Valley (3 times, they do like their wine), Bordeaux, Tuscany and are going to the 100th anniversary of the Tour de France. They will ride parts of different stages and be seated on the Champs Elysees for the finish. They choose “Trek Travel” as their travel company. All their kids help out with the family business either directly or indirectly. Geoffrey (their son) and his wife Stephanie are both anthropologists and both halfway through their PhDs, Geoffrey wrote his masters thesis on Bicycle Advocacy. Ellecia shares her parents passion for cycling and the business and is currently one of the managers. On her days off she is either grabbing her full faced helmet and mountain bike riding or jumping on her road bike for a fast ride with her fiancé Jon. Chelsea is on the Kid Carson show and is always talking about her family and their business, she does the radio and TV ad voice overs... and can be seen riding her pretty pink fixie through Vancouver. Of course a 4 store business with exceptional customer service doesn’t run itself. As history proves itself, Glen has alway had an uncanny knack of attracting exceptional people. Rhys, the General Manager oversees the day to day operation of all the business. Evan is the store manager in Port Coqutilam, Eric oversees the very busy service area , Danie manages the Port Moody Westwo Store, Rodney manages the Maple Ridge Store, the new Burnaby Store will be managed o by Shane with the help of Blair, and Ellecia ‘roams’ between all the stores so managers Cycle’s d can have a day off. Make Your Home Safe for Independent Living Are you a low-income senior or a person with a disability who wants to live safely and independently in the comfort of your home? Do you have difficulty performing day-to-day activities? Does your home need to be adapted to meet your changing needs? If so, you may be eligible for financial assistance under the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program. Find out today if you are eligible and if you meet all of the requirements as a low-income homeowner or as a landlord applying on behalf of an eligible tenant.
To apply or learn more, visit www.bchousing.org/HAFI You can also contact BC Housing: Phone: 604-646-7055 Toll-free: 1-800-407-7757 (ext. 7055)
HAFI adapts homes for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities
Brenda has always been an active woman. However, recent health issues including osteoarthritis in her left knee and losing kidney function have slowed her down. Her mobility is limited and she is now on dialysis three days a week. To adjust to her changed circumstances, Brenda sought help with her daily living activities. Part of that help came from the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program offered through BC Housing. Launched in January 2012, the HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently. Brenda applied for a new walk-in bathtub because she couldn’t safely get out of the tub on her own. Walk-in tubs include additional safety measures such as anti-slip floors, grab bars, and a very low step in. Home adaptations may also include handrails in halls or stairs, ramps for

easier access, easy-to-reach work and storage areas in the kitchen, lever handles on doors or faucets, walk-in showers, and bathtub grab bars and seats. Brenda is a strong advocate for the program and has even shared HAFI brochures with nurses in the renal unit where she undergoes dialysis. If you or someone you know is having difficulty performing day-to-day activities safely and independently – the HAFI program may be able to help. Since the program began, more than 300 households completed renovations with HAFI financial assistance, making it possible for seniors and people with disabilities to continue to live in the safety and comfort of their home.

Living the bright life at Imani Development’s Shine The sun is shining on Vancouver’s South Main neighbourhood with Shine, the newest condominium development from Imani Development. Featuring a range of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom floorplans ranging from around 500 to over 1,300 square feet, the 90 homes are exclusive and luxurious, with amazing views overlooking False Creek, downtown Vancouver and the North Shore mountains. The homes are situated on a quiet residential street, so you’re away from the noise and bustle of Main Street.
The contemporary kitchens feature high-gloss white upper cabinets with wood grain or high-gloss white lower cabinets, complemented by a quartz stone countertop, ceramic tile backsplash and stainless-steel appliances. Wide-plank birch laminate flooring is included throughout the main living areas, with carpeting in the bedrooms. The bathrooms could be featured in a spa, with their deep soaker tubs, ceramic tile bathtub and shower surround and modern white or wood-grain cabinetry.
NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT
Buyers are able to choose between two designer colour schemes, and each suite includes a laundry area with a washer and dryer, for an extra little bit of convenience. The South Main neighourhood has been growing rapidly over the past few years, and Shine is perfectly situated to take advantage of all the amenities the area has to offer. You will be within walking distance of schools, shopping, dining and transit, as well as leisure and recreation opportunities. Vancouver’s Olympic Village and the SeaWall are nearby, making it easy to get a bit of outdoor exercise if you’re in the mood. There are also several yoga studios and parks, along with two community centres within easy reach. You’ll also find a large outdoor courtyard with a seating lounge, fire pit, barbecue area and portable outdoor movie screen on the property itself, as well as a rooftop deck with gorgeous city views, and an expansive lobby. For more information, visit www.liveatshine.com, call 604-874-7478 or visit the sales centre at 2152 Main Street, open daily except Friday between noon and 5 p.m., or by appointment.

The homes at G3 include stainless-steel appliances, quartz countertops and spacious open floorplans. The project will encompass three buildings, with all construction expected to be completed by next summer. Residents will also have access to a residents lounge with a gym, fireside lounge and a guest suite, among other amenities.
Affordable lifestyle living in Guildford By Kerry Vital
Surrey’s Guildford neighbourhood is quickly becoming a vibrant place to live, work and play. Now, G3 Developments is adding to the excitement with G3. With three buildings and 155 condominium suites in a range of studio,
one-bedroom, one-bedroom-and-den and two-bedroom floorplans, three is definitely a lucky number for G3, located just steps away from anything you could possibly need. “You can walk to everything,” says sales manager Margaret Bird. “There’s easy access” to the rest of the Lower Mainland via the Port Mann Bridge, along with the convenience of living near Guildford Town Centre and the Guildford Recreation Centre and Library. You’re also within walking distance of parks, schools, shopping and restaurants, and just minutes away from Surrey City Centre by car. The homes at G3 are spacious and modern, with stainless-steel appliances, quartz countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms and a convenient eating bar perfect for a quick bite in the morning or as a place to gather while entertaining. track lighting and pendant lights in the kitchen easily illuminate your tasks. The bathrooms feature a quartz backsplash to complement the countertops, as well as wall mount vanity lights, soaker bathtubs and semi-frameless glass shower stalls and a sleek undermount sink. Buyers can choose between two designer colour schemes, Sterling and Onyx. The homes include nine-foot ceilings (higher on the top floors), laminate hardwood flooring in the main living areas and lush carpeting in the bedrooms, along with a stacking front-load washer and dryer and storage and parking for every home. Residents will also have access to the G3 residents lounge, which will include a gym, fireside lounge and a guest suite, among other things.
The biggest draw for buyers so far has been the value they get for their money. “These price points are attractive,” Bird says, adding that first-time buyers have been particularly interested. She has also seen longtime area residents looking at the homes as part of their downsizing plans. “They want to live near their kids, but not actually with them,” she says. The first phase, called Premiere, has been selling well and Bird notes that buyers there will be able to move into their new home in March 2014. The second and third phases, Encore and Finale respectively, will be completely finished by next summer. Homes at G3 start at $139,900 for a studio, $169,900 for a one-bedroom and $219,900 for a two-bedroom. For more information, go to g3living.ca, call 604-588-8238 or visit the showroom at 10439 154th Street, Surrey, open every day except Friday between noon and 5 p.m.
