Grader operator suspected of impaired driving Staff writer West Kootenay Advertiser

A man in control of an 18,000 pound piece of machinery in the area near Rosebery got himself in a bit of a scrape when Slocan Lake RCMP curbed his ride.

Police, according to a press release by Cst. A. Van Hussen, responded just after noon last Wednesday to a complaint of a road grader driving erratically on Wilson Creek Forest Road.

There was concern that the man driving

the big machine, a Castlegar area resident, was either having medical issues, or was drunk.

The 51-year-old operator was apprehended by police and it was determined that he had been consuming alcohol.

He failed to provide a breath sample and was issued and immediate driving prohibition. His drivers license was suspended for 90 days and the grader impounded for 30 days.

Approval in principle has been granted on an application for an initiative petition. The petition will be issued to proponent Dana Larsen on Monday, September 9, 2013 and signature sheets must be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer by Monday, December 9, 2013.

The Title of the Initiative is: An initiative to amend the Police Act. Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Community of Brandon was once a rival to Slocan City GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser

Twentieth in a primarily alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names The Slocan City suburb of Brandon takes its name from its founder, William Henry Brandon (1857-fl.

1928), who came to New Denver from Ontario in the spring of 1892.

An experienced prospector, he held many claims, one of which resulted in his arrest in Guelph in 1894 on charges of embezzlement and conspiracy. He was alleged to have misappropriated funds belonging to his backers. However, a sympathetic story in the Nelson Tribune suggested it was all a misunderstanding, and upon his return to the area, “He had no difficulty whatever in convincing his friends both here and at Guelph that his mining partners were a little too hasty in bringing an action against him.” It’s not clear how the case was resolved.

The earliest mention

The only picture of Brandon known to exist. It appeared in the BC Mining Record in February 1897 and has not been reprinted since.

of Brandon’s namesake neighbourhood was in the Nelson Miner of August 15, 1896, which stated that “The Two Friends and Howard Fraction have ore at Brandon ready for shipment to the smelter.”

But it took until October 3 for the paper to clarify that Brandon and Slocan City were both at the foot of Slocan Lake.

Despite this, a second post office application was submitted on April 24, 1897 and this time the inspector recommended approval.

“The distance is fully a mile between the post office at Slocan City and the site of the proposed office at Brandon,” he wrote, though it was actually a lot closer. “There is a natural division between the two towns, which gives

each a separate and distinct character … The establishment of a post office at Brandon will be a great convenience to the residents there.” However, it never opened.

Alfred Driscoll surveyed the Brandon townsite and deposited the plan with the land registry on October 3, 1898.

It consisted of 11 blocks with two avenues, Park and Arlington, and three streets, Springer, Finch, and Falls. By 1902, 134 lots remained unsold and Nelson mayor/realtor/ newspaper publisher John Houston was instructed to sell them off cheap, along with an unplatted portion of 50 to 60 acres.

While many overtures were made to amalgamate Slocan and Brandon, it never happened.

Today you would hardly guess that Brandon is outside village limits but for the fact its streets have its name in parenthesis.

By 1928, William Brandon lived in Winnipeg.

His brother Daniel (1856fl. 1911) built and operated the Selkirk Hotel in Silverton.

Trail residents may soon see improvements in the entrance to the downtown corridor as the city has slated construction to begin later this month.

The city has awarded a local company, Maglio Installations, to begin construction on the Victoria Street Corridor project once necessary Ministry of Transportation (MOT) permits are approved.

The total contract cost is $1.6 million with the Nelson general contracting company receiving $1.4 million for the first phase of construction.

The realm of the work on the Gateway project will involve extensive infrastructure improvements along Victoria Street, which include: new curbs and drainage; sidewalk resurfacing and realignment; bump outs; improved pedestrian crossings; and centre medians delineated for future planting.

traffic pattern changes to accommodate construction along Victoria Street, said Andrea Jolly, Trail’s communications and events coordinator.

A crew will be on site between the hours of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. to allow parts of the job that can’t be completed during the hotter hours of the day, she added.

The city’s goal is to wrap up the construction phase of the project by the fall of 2013, at which time the MOT is set to begin repaving Victoria Street.

The remainder of

the costs earmarked for the second phase of the project, has been awarded to HilTech Construction, and includes the supply and installation of gateway features at Bay, Pine and Cedar avenues.

After a series of setbacks the last few years. the Victoria Street Corridor project remained a top priority for Trail council when planning the 2013 budget.

At a February meeting, Coun. Rick Georgetti presented the governance and operations committee(GOC) report,

which confirmed that council approved $1.1 million in its 2013 Capital Budget to proceed with the work.

Earlier that month, city staff partook in a conference call with the project’s design firm, MMM Group, to discuss the status of the project.

The firm’s report states that the design elements will have a traffic calming effect which will slow traffic through the city and also improve traffic and pedestrian safety.

Finance Reaching the milestone of passing on the family vacation property Ah, summer, gotta love it – good times, barbecues, swimming, boating and spending fun-filled times at our recreational properties. For many families, the vacation property evokes fond memories of days gone by and strong sentimental attachments. These feelings can often make it very difficult for the owners to decide about the future use and ownership of the property. It can make for stressful moments, especially when the options aren’t known and the implications are unclear.

Where there is a desire to pass on the vacation property to future generations, many questions often arise about the different transfer options that might be available. It’s one thing to own recreational property here in Canada but, owning a vacation property situated outside of Canada may give rise to other issues. For example, property situated in the U.S. may be subject to U.S. estate tax. Professional advice should be obtained from advisors in the country where the property is located.

In addition to tax issues, owners should consider having a will and power of attorney prepared in accordance with the laws of the country where the property is located.

One of the primary decisions that should be made is wheth-

er the transfer of the vacation property to children should take place during your lifetime or whether it should be dealt with only on death. Here are some options worth considering: 1) Transfer options may include gifting the vacation property outright to one or more children during your lifetime.

This might be considered if the vacation property is to pass to the children eventually in any event. It could also benefit you if there is a wish to have the children more involved in the maintenance of the vacation property.

2) Joint ownership of property can, in some circumstances, be a useful estate planning technique. With this option, the parents would transfer a joint interest in the vacation property to the children so that the parents and children own the vacation property jointly.

3) Another option is to the sell the vacation property to the children if it is going to be passed to them anyways. Perhaps the parents need or want the proceeds of the sale for their own living expenses now or for other purposes.

4) Transferring the vacation

5) Rather than transferring the vacation property during your lifetime, you may wish to make a specific gift of your vacation property to your children in your will. You may wish to retain ownership until after you pass away.

6) Another option is to state in your will that the vacation property is to be offered for sale to one or more of your children.

The issues or concerns with this could be disagreements if more than one child wishes to purchase the property. There will need to be a mechanism for determining the purchase price and payment terms which are fair to all family members, including a provision for equalization payments, if appropriate.

Life Matters property to a “lifetime trust” with the children named as beneficiaries. This may be an option especially when the parents wish to maintain some control over the property (including the ability to continue using the property during their lifetime).

The terms of the trust agreement can be drafted in order to protect the interests and concerns of the parents while alive.

7) Rather than an outright transfer, another possibility is to use a trust in your will (a testamentary trust) to hold the vacation property.

When a vacation property is transferred to a trust, the trust becomes the legal owner of the property. Because the trust would own the vacation property, future increases in the value of the property would accumulate within the trust. However, a trust is considered to have disposed of its property at fair market value on the 21st anni-

versary of the creation of the trust. As a result, there would be capital gains owing at that time or earlier, if it is wound up prior to that point.

As you can see, this is hardly a one-size-fits-all solution as there are various options that might work. But with each choice, there are myriad tax implications, probate issues and other factors to consider. This decision should not be taken lightly.

Open and honest family discussions should take place first simply to get a sense of what the next generation may be thinking.

With all that in mind, further discussions with your wealth and estate planner are vital. It may be necessary to approach this with a team of advisors including your accountant and lawyer as well.

Everyone wants those special summer-time memories to continue for many years to come.

Planning now, can ensure that your wishes are fulfilled and estate hassles are kept to a minimum.

Nelson Kootenay Lake is open for business, with markets, festivals, and more on the agenda for you to enjoy.

The roads are open and ferries are in full swing, so come and find out why most visitors never want to leave.

July 10, 2013 --- Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism is assuring tourists that all roads and ferries are operating as usual, and the area is ready to welcome visitors for the peak summer season.

Calgary, Canmore and surrounding communities experienced the worst floods in decades last month, forcing tens of thousands from their homes. A state of emergency was declared in Alberta and dozens of roads and bridges were closed or washed away, including several major highways. Banff was also hit hard, but most highways including the TransCanada from the west, have since re-opened.

Food and fuel supplies have also been restored.

Financial aid and support is pouring in as recovery efforts continue in Alberta. But with much confusion surrounding road accessibility in the broader region, Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism Executive Director Dianna Ducs is assuring visitors that the Nelson Kootenay Lake region is open for business.

“I have received many inquiries from visitors who are under the impression that we are not accessible. We were not significantly affected by

heavy rainfall and are operating as usual,” Ducs says.

“We want to emphasize that the roads are open, ferries are running to full capacity, and we are ready to welcome visitors for the summer season.”

The Nelson-Nelway Highway is open in all directions and remains in a good condition west to Castlegar and south towards Salmo on Highway 6. The 3A Highway to Balfour is also operating as usual and Highway 31 is now clear up to Lardeau and beyond. Traffic is also operating as normal on the Salmo Creston Pass along Highway 3.

In addition, all local ferries are operating as usual, including the Galena Bay Ferry from Revelstoke via Highway 23 and the Fauquier Ferry which connects travelers from Vernon via Highway 6.

The Kootenay Lake Ferry is also operating its summer schedule until Labour Day, offering 15 daily departures on board the M.V Osprey and M.V Balfour.

Passengers can board the 35 minute service for free with cars, trucks and bicycles all year round.

With a packed calendar of events this season, Ms Ducs says summer is an ideal time to visit Nelson Kootenay Lake and experience what the region has to offer.

“There is so much going on over the summer, including Artwalk, the internationally renowned Kaslo Jazz Festival and the Fat Tire Fest. It’s also market season and the Baker Street Market Fest is return-

ing to Nelson each month over the summer. Now is a great time to come and experience the warm weather and unique culture of Nelson Kootenay Lake,” Ms Ducs says.

More than 1000 visitors are expected to attend this year’s Kaslo Jazz Festival, with an impressive line-up of jazz, blues and soul musicians to take to the stage over the August long weekend (August 2-4). Recently recognized as one of the Top 10 Places to Enjoy Outdoor Summer Music by the Edmonton Sun, visitors are encouraged to book their tickets and accommodation ahead of time to avoid missing out.

Artwalk 2013 is also in full swing in Nelson and Kaslo, with artworks from local artisans on show right across town. Visitors can browse artworks from dozens of celebrated artists and discover how the region earned the title as one of the best small art towns in America.

The 31st annual Cysowg’n’Fun triathlon will also return to Nelson on August 4, followed by the Fat Tire Festival on August 23-25. Marking its 18th year running, the annual festival will bring bike lovers together for three days of riding, competitions and fun.

Sharona Witwicki has been bodybuilding for close to three years and is gaining more prominence, most recently placing third at the BC Amateur Bodybuilding Association (BCABBA) provincials.

Witwicki, who works at the local Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce branch by day, was up against 300 competitors at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster, B.C. on June 22.

“The provincials are very high calibre and everyone brought their A game,” Witwicki explained, adding that judges stated they normally choose the topfive very easily and that was not the case this year.

Placing at the nationals would mean that Witwicki would qualify for her procard, which would then allow her to compete on an international level as an International Federation of Body Building (IFBB) and fitness pro.

Witwicki is especially grateful to her coaches Al and Nancy Clark of BodyEdge Fitness for helping her with her training.

Selkirk nursing graduate, Kara Sundberg, recently won the University of Victoria (UVic) Faculty of Human and Social Development Award of Distinction for the highest grade point average (GPA) of all graduates in the faculty.

Sundberg’s GPA was not only the highest in her nursing program, it was the highest in the faculty, which included students from seven other programs.

“I feel honoured to have won this award, especially among so many great students in my graduating class,” she said.

Sundberg lives in Crescent Valley and chose to attend Selkirk’s nursing program because she had the option to stay closer to home while obtaining her degree from UVic. “It was very important for me to have the option to study at Selkirk and stay close to home,” she said. “I don’t think I would have gone back to school if the option wasn’t available.”

She earned her first degree from UVic in biology and began working in forestry and fisheries, but developed an interest in human physiology,

stay close to home and study, builds on Selkirk’s strategic directions to increase enrolments, and en-

gage the wider community in learning and developing innovative programs and services.

“Kara is very supportive of people in need, whether it’s been another student in her class, clients and patients, or those living on the fringe,” said Ruth Dubois, nursing program coordinator and one of Kara’s instructors.

“Along with her academic excellence, she has always valued helping people and has focused on holistic and collaborative ways to do that.”

Sundeberg’s experience at Selkirk was

positive and supportive.

“The instructors were incredibly personable and supportive, and the small class size and diversity of practicum experiences provided me with a great learning environment,” she said.

“I also wanted to get involved in my community and thought nursing was a good fit for this.”

She is now working as a nurse on a medical unit at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson and her plans are to pursue a career in Nelson or the surrounding area.

“This is my community and this is where I hope to remain,” said Sundberg.

“I hope to gain as much experience as I can over the next year or two and eventually

This is one of those moments where it is appropriate to look down at someone’s breasts.

The latest instalment of Busted–raising awareness around breast health issues and cancer – is back in the West Kootenay at the Esprit de la Femme this summer.

Although the show is staged in Nelson, the breast bust subject models and their respective artists come from across the West Kootenay region.

There are 16 plaster busts of 16 women—ranging in age from teens to seventies—professionally and artfully designed by 16 Kootenay artists. The show that began as one woman’s homage to her mother’s battle with breast cancer has come back to where it started.

Show curator, artist, model and visionary Safire Jones said, after raising over $2,000 from the first show last year, there needed to be a second one.

“It’s been an amazing journey and experience sharing heart warming stories with all of these women,” she said about the show’s continuing odyssey. “This has been such a fulfilling project that has now again come to fruition.”

“This show is to remind people to take the matters of breast health into their own hands.”

The slate of artists includes Rabia, Nicole Rose, Bubzee, Avrell Fox, Sydney Evans, Kelly Shpeley, Della Schafer, Jessica Tessier, Robyn Gold, Lada Love, Alana Cronshaw, Jody Deverney, Connie Cocolala, Donna Ramsay, Cindy Moser and Safire Jones.

The show was inspired by Jones’ mother, Lyn, 63, who died from breast cancer in ChristChurch, New Zealand, two years ago. She went through chemotherapy, a mastectomy radiation therapy, and hormone therapy,

but succumbed to the disease less than one year and a half after diagnosis.

The show contains information from Willow, a support network for people living with a diagnosis of breast cancer, on breast examinations and breast health.

Proceeds from the auction of the busts at the end of the show in September will again be split between Willow and something beautiful for the oncology ward (cancer treatment) at Kootenay Lake Hospital.

Willow is a support network for people living with a diagnosis of cancer, as well as those who are touched by the disease through a loved one, making sure no one faces cancer alone.

The organization (www.willow. org) helps people across the country with a wide range of supports, including peer counselling, self examination information, alternative and traditional treatments, a huge resource centre and links to other helpful organizations.

Robusters represent Kootenays – paddling in Lethbridge, AB

The Kootenay Robusters Dragon Boat Team recently competed in the recreational women’s division of the Lethbridge Dragon Boat Festival. The event was held at Henderson Lake on July 5, 6 and 7. Since launching their dragon boat at the beginning of May, the team, with members from Trail, Rossland, Grand Forks, Christina Lake and Castlegar, has been paddling three times a week under the direction of coach Trish Ostlund, to get ready

for this early season challenge.

In total, 16 women’s teams raced each other for top honours, competing in four heats to determine placement. By the end of the tournament, the Robusters had taken first place in the A division consolation round. Considering that the top four teams who took part in the A division medal round were youthful amazons, the Robusters (whose average age is 60) were quite pleased with their results – placing fifth overall.

vals hold a special race for breast cancer survivors, since so many women’s teams have been organized to provide emotional and physical support to survivors and to raise awareness in communities across the world. For this race, the Robusters blended with a team from Cranbrook, Abreast in the Rockies, since neither team had enough survivors to compete on their own. The Robusters are now taking a break for three weeks and will be starting their practices again early in August – with a plan to compete in the Penticton Dragon Boat Festival in early September. Verna Chernoff has plenty to smile about. For one thing, her multi-month project which contains close to 5,000 pieces is complete, and for another, it has been judged numero uno by a panel of experts in the field of quilting.

In fact, at last month’s Canadian

Quilters’ Guild annual event, held in Penticton, Chernoff ’s “Arabian Nights” earned First Place, the Award of Excellence in the Canadian Juried Quilt Show.

Hundreds of entries from all across Canada and several U.S. states were part of the show.

“My goal is to get out of my pajamas before my husband gets home from

work,” said Chernoff of her normal quilting timetable.

The winning effort took her “four or five months.” The number of hours was not exactly stated.

“Any chance I get, I work on the quilt,” she said. “It’s an addiction that I have.

I’m always in my sewing room, quilting up something.”

Of the many submissions there were

92 quilts to make the cut and be selected to be a part of the juried portion. After close scrutiny the judges chose “Arabian Nights” number one.

“This was the biggest piece in the show,” said Chernoff.

Although financial considerations are not what motivates her, she did accept the $750 that came as part of the Award of Excellence.

HAFI adapts homes for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities

Brenda has always been an active woman. However, recent health issues including osteoarthritis in her left knee and losing kidney function have slowed her down. Her mobility is limited and she is now on dialysis three days a week. To adjust to her changed circumstances, Brenda sought help with her daily living activities.

Part of that help came from the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program offered through BC Housing. Launched in January 2012, the HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

Brenda applied for a new walk-in bathtub because she couldn’t safely get out of the tub on her own.

Walk-in tubs include additional safety measures such as anti-slip floors, grab bars, and a very low step in.

Home adaptations may also include handrails in halls or stairs, ramps for

easier access, easy-to-reach work and storage areas in the kitchen, lever handles on doors or faucets, walk-in showers, and bathtub grab bars and seats.

Brenda is a strong advocate for the program and has even shared HAFI brochures with nurses in the renal unit where she undergoes dialysis.

If you or someone you know is having difficulty performing day-to-day activities safely and independently – the HAFI program may be able to help.

Since the program began, more than 300 households completed renovations with HAFI financial assistance, making it possible for seniors and people with disabilities to continue to live in the safety and comfort of their home.

Welcome to our regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk. somewhat atypical for Castlegar Sculpturewalk – they intend to construct their monolithic piece ‘In Between’ mere days before the event launches.

“We see it as an interactive conversation between us, albeit one taking place in three dimensions,” says Johnston.

“Process drives both of us, so we’ve got this back and forth that carries on artistically. Instead of words, Shayne and I will be conversing using form, space and materials starting from opposite sides of an envisioned arch. It opens up many possibilities. Will there be symmetry and congruousness, or will the end result of the ‘conversation’ be dramatic, apparent difference?”

In terms of sheer size, Johnston and Brandel’s piece will be the largest installation on display at this year’s Sculpturewalk. Arguably, it will be one of the most unorthodox sculptures, particularly given the installation process. It is also the only sculpture consisting mainly of 2 X 4’s in this year’s event, so it boast a number of unique traits already. But the question nearly everyone who sees it will ask is this: “What exactly does it depict?”

‘In Between’ is less about the end result than the ongoing process,” says Brandel.

“On some level, I think the goal for most artists is to represent reality, however subjective that may be. My personal interest in that representation lies within the ongoing fragmentation of reality, the process of the physical, and the ephemeral quality in which we take it all in.

Objects, surfaces and forces we interact with are in a constant state of opposition.” “ This is two individuals starting from potentially dissimilar perspectives and seeing where conversing through the creative process takes them,” adds Johnston. “The middle of the piece will be the common point. Beyond that, who knows?”

‘A Band of Ravens’ captures the group of tricksters in beautiful detail and full flight, spreading as they descend from a slightly elevated single line.

Here he has seven of them wheeling down in tight formation, wings at various angles as they branch off.

Each bird is beautifully styled and collectively the work flows impressively. McKinnon captures the notion of density but each bird is positioned so appropriately that the overall effect is dramatic, cohesive and beautifully balanced.

Johnston’s background is architectural.

He studied at Carleton University in Ottawa and also spent time at the prestigious Bauhaus Dessau Foundation Kolleg co-developing and implementing group idea processes. He is acclaimed for his extravagant, multi-installation works exploring refuse and consumption. Whether using ceramic multiples of plastic bags or re-visioned light bulbs (The Antechamber: Between the Lines (Georgia) from Re-Inventing Consumption: 2010-2013), boxes, and cell phones (Cellular Brick Road from Refuse Culture: 2007-2010 is sinuous and stunning) his art is large, provocative and profound.

Brandel studied sculpture and drawing in Kelowna at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus while pursuing painting on his own time. The intriguing, progressive Silence: Day 13 to Day 99 is a spectral, gray-dominated series that displays his diversity and vision.

Lately, he has re-focused on sculpture in stimulating installations using puzzle pieces (Jig is Up) or playing cards (What’s the Angle) as central components carefully juxtaposed with other everyday objects.

Both based in Nelson, Brandel and Johnston are innovative, avant-garde artists whose creative thought processes and vision often parallel – inviting their collaborative effort. ‘In Between’ promotes marrying their process-driven creativity in an exploratory way. We’ll find out how it worked, post-‘conversation’ as it were.

John McKinnon ‘A Band of Ravens’ (steel and bronze) Multi-media artist John McKinnon returns to Castlegar Sculpturewalk with another work that shows his diversity and skill regardless of the material he is working with, or the subject matter. This time it’s birds – and what spectacular birds they are.

Ravens are notoriously intelligent, highly respected in indigenous cultures for their canniness and cunning, clever ways. McKinnon had ample time to study their habits and physiognomy during the many years he spent in Canada’s North teaching Inuit sculptors modern stone techniques while absorbing their traditional soapstone skills.

As he notes in the name plate that accompanies ‘A Band of Ravens’, his intent is to create the illusion of flight.

He has succeeded completely. They skim along in a chaotic but ordered manner, wings outspread in various poses.

“I’ve been working with the idea of creating large compositions using a combination of smaller pieces,” he says. “The flight of the ravens seemed a natural way to put the idea to practice. I deliberately bunched them fairly close together, so the finished sculpture had balance and solidity at once. Spacing them too far apart would have resulted in a disjointed, unbalanced end product.”

McKinnon is comfortable in a wide range of mediums – from snow and sand to ice, serpentine, bronze, limestone and steel – and many more besides. His imposing sandstone and marble human bonding commissions are familiar sites around his hometown of Nelson (Nelson and District

Community Centre, Kootenay Lake District Hospital, Lakeside and Gyro Park, among others) but he has also created recycled metal bears – Junkyard Bear in Cranbrook - abstract human form studies in alabaster, anhydrite and steatite - Torso, Female Form, Mother Form - and mixed media installations using a plethora of materials across Canada and beyond.

A master sculptor and artist who has honed his talent over 40 years across all mediums, McKinnon is perhaps proudest of his personal eight acre sculpture garden, featuring his own diverse works along with collected pieces from peers and contemporaries. With ‘A Band of Ravens’ he has created another striking work that would look fantastic anywhere; the distinctive stylized pattern of the birds will be unmistakeable at Sculpturewalk. Ultimately, it will likely grace his own collection, fitting in beautifully amid the trees off his Granite Road studio.

Tip of the Week: A powerful line-up of planetary alignments is the celestial backdrop ‘synchronizing’ with world events now. On July 14th Mars entered Cancer where it traditionally proves to cut, carve and renovate with a sharp edge. On July 17th Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune formed an exact Grand Trine (each planet exactly 120 degrees apart) in the three Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces respectively. Together these indicate deep change and transformation (Saturn in Scorpio) with mass spiritual implications (Neptune in Pisces) activated by huge events and both the source of and the consequence of big and widespread emotional sentiments (Jupiter in Cancer). Next on July 20th, the day Mercury in Cancer turns Direct, Mars will take its turn completing the Grand Trine in Water with Saturn and Neptune. Then, on July 22 under the light of the Full Moon in Aquarius on the first day of the Sun’s cycle in Leo, Mars will conjunct Jupiter in Cancer reinforcing this Water Grand Trine alignment. Mars will heat things up that much more on July 27th when it forms an exact Opposition to Pluto on the same day that the Moon forms a Conjunction with Uranus and then will actually form a Square to Uranus on July 31, thereby reinforcing the lingering and potent Square aspect between Uranus and Pluto. Thus, Mars will weave the Water Grand Trine with the Uranus/ Pluto Square. The manifestation of this weave of dynamic planetary energies stands to be at least a continuation of the social and political hotspots on the planet such as Syria, Egypt and Brazil, and probably an inflation of these and the ignition of others yet. These powerful activations will continue through August and every month for the rest of the year culminating with Comet Ison which is scheduled to come into view as early as late November. I will elaborate on the July events next week and bring even more attention to the big August activations in the weeks to come. Stay tuned!

Emergency scams rise with summer travel

“Hi, Gram, I need your help and you have to promise not to tell Mom and Dad. I got arrested in Mexico and I need $2,000 bail money...”

“Grandpa, I’m in London with my college roommate. You remember Carol? We were robbed last night in a pub and now I have no money to get home.”

Consumer scams are a serious problem in Canada, and this is one of the most common: the Emergency Scam, where the scammer poses as a friend or family member in trouble, often overseas, and requests that money be sent. It’s sometimes called the Grandparent Scam because seniors are often targeted by scammers pretending to be grandchildren.

During the summer travel season, there is an increased potential for Emergency or Grandparent Scams to occur. More people are traveling, and whenever people are vulnerable, fraudsters will generally attack.

Emergency scams play off people’s emotions and strong desire to help others in need.

Scammers impersonate their victims’ loved ones, often using information they’ve picked up on social media, and make up an urgent situation - I’ve been arrested,

I’ve been mugged, I’m in the hospital. The scammer makes an urgent plea for help...and money.

In most cases, the scammer asks for money to be wired immediately.

The victim often responds quickly and without checking first to see if the pleading voice on the other end of the phone really is their grandchild or other loved one.

Better Business Bureau offers the following tips to protect consumers from Emergency Scams during the summer travel season:

The Grand Forks track will be host its provincial on Sunday July 21 making this the first ever Kootenay BMX weekend with the two tracks working together.
