THE YOUNG MAN WHO KILLED 15-year-old Laura
Szendrei in North Delta three years ago should be treated as an adult and be held under close supervision indefinitely, a psychiatrist told a judge this week. On Wednesday, Dr. Paul Janke, who oversees psychiatric services for youth detention facilities, told a Surrey Provincial courtroom he wouldn’t take the accused into one of his facilities. “We don’t treat people beyond the age of 20,” Janke said, adding that the allowable seven years supervision is not enough for Szendrei’s killer. He needs “very long supervision, if not life-long supervision,” Janke said. The court learned this week Laura Szendrei that the man killed Szendrei three years ago because he couldn’t control his sexual urges. It was much the same problem he had when he attacked three other women near Burns Bog in the months prior to killing Szendrei in Delta’s Mackie Park, according to another psychologist specializing in youth, who testified Tuesday. Dr. Kulwant Riar testified Tuesday the young man who has admitted to killing Szendrei has a “mediumto-high” risk of re-offending. That is, unless he gets treatment, Riar said during a hearing where it’s being determined whether or not the murderer will be See DOCTOR / Page 5

ever expected. When her mom, Lucy Ann Johnson, went missing in Surrey more than 50 years ago, Linda was only seven or eight. She never heard from her again. “Honestly, I thought she was dead because there’s been no contact. Nothing,” said Evans. But that all changed in the past two weeks. After The Leader ran a story earlier this month about Johnson’s dis- Lucy Ann Johnson appearance – one of Surrey RCMP’s oldest missing person’s cases – Evans, now in her late 50s, got on her computer and started doing some research herself. She knew her mother was born in Alaska, and on a whim, thought she’d see if anyone up north knew who
