Metro Vancouver is taking the Township of Langley to court to make the municipality comply with the regional growth strategy, saying the local council’s defiance of the plan threatens to set a dangerous precedent.

At issue is the Township’s vision for the so-called University District, a large 180-hectare area named after nearby Trinity Western University and earmarked for future institutional expansion by TWU and related development.

Township council last month rezoned the land near Highway 1 and Glover Road, much of which is in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), but the legal challenge by Metro aims to quash the bylaw.

Jack Metro argues the municipality Froese must abide by the new regional growth strategy.

It requires the land use change go to a vote of the regional board because it calls for more intensive development of homes outside the regional plan’s urban containment boundary, contrary to Metro’s goal of concentrating growth in town centres and limiting sprawl in more rural and agricultural areas.

The Township contends a two-year transition period means it is operating under the old regional plan — not the new one adopted two years ago — and can legally make the land-use change now.

“We feel it should be the municipality that deals with land-use issues,” Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese said. “We are very confident with the case law our lawyers have reviewed that we are doing the right thing.”

Metro directors say a Langley victory in the dispute could leave other areas of farmland or green space more vulnerable to development.

They usually result from someone using them as an ashtray.

Two missing words on a Langley Township document have forced a second survey to see if there is enough support to run a municipal water line to residents of 52 Avenue between 237 and 240 Streets.

Council approved the do-over on Monday ( July 15) after administrator Mark Bakken said for “some unknown reason” the Township “notice of proposed water local service area” told property owners the petition voting forms must be filed “before June 12, 2013,” not “on or before,” the usual wording.

That survey narrowly approved the water line hookups, but five of the responses were filed on or after the deadline date.

The date issue was raised by residents Shelley Murphy and Ray Murphy, who get their water from a well and don’t want to be forced to pay for a municipal hookup.

They came to council July 8 to argue it was unfair to force them to make an expensive connection they don’t need,

based on a questionable survey.

“It’s going to cost me $30,000 on my taxes over 20 years,” Shelley Murphy told council.

“You’re messing with people’s finances here.”

Following the council vote to throw out the first survey results and order a second, Murphy was disappointed.

She thinks the proposal should have simply been declared defeated.

“I do take part of it as a victory,” Murphy told The Times, “but I think it really should be [ruled] a failed petition.”

The added cost of a second survey will be minor, staff estimate, just postage and time spent adding up the results and reporting them to council.

As well, a staff report to council on the issue by Township public works director Roeland Zwaag promises there will be an information meeting with 52 Avenue residents to “outline the process, discuss costing details, and respond to any outstanding questions.”

Township staff have also launched a review of all bylaws and policies covering local area service requests like the

52 Avenue water hookups, to make sure the wording is consistent in the future.

The 52 Avenue water service proposal would connect homeowners to the East Langley Water Supply line when it arrives in the neighbourhood later this year.

The $33.5 million East Langley Water Supply project to bring Metro Vancouver water to Aldergrove and Gloucester is the biggest project ever undertaken by the Township of Langley’s engineering department, with 14 kilometres of water main and a booster pump station.

Work on phase 1 started in May. It will run a one-metre diameter steel water main between Willoughby and Murrayville following 72 Avenue, 210 Street, Worrell Crescent, 216 Street, 56 Avenue, and 224 Street.

East Langley’s water currently comes from seven groundwater wells.

Because of that, during peak usage periods in the summer, water restrictions have to be enforced.

The Township projects increased demand for water in Aldergrove, with the population in the area growing from 12,000 to 20,000 people within 30 years.

Man charged with indecent acts back in court MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter

A 34-year-old Aldergrove man charged with three counts of committing indecent acts in a public place made brief appearances in Surrey Provincial Court on Thursday, July 11 to obtain counsel and on Friday to make an application to vary his bail.

Rollie Teodosio is accused of exposing himself and committing indecent acts, mainly exposing himself to girls and women.

The issue first came onto the Langley RCMP radar after a 12-year-old Brookswood resident made a complaint about a man exposing himself in November, 2012. Over the next few months, several other similar complaints were received, said Langley RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks at the time he was arrested.

A mini task force was struck where general duty, serious crime and street enforcement units collaborated and successfully identified a suspect. The street enforcement unit completed surveillance and that will be used as part of the evidence.

He was released on $500 bail and conditions on June 27.

Stolen dune buggy recovered Langley RCMP is seeking to return a recovered stolen dune buggy to its rightful owner.

The dune buggy was recovered after it was abandoned in a bush area, in the 4600 block of 264 Street, near the Aldergrove Canaian Forces station. Searches of police databases have not been fruitful in finding the owner, nor have there been any reports of dune buggies being stolen in the area.

“What we’re concerned about is the precedent that’s set if, in fact, Langley is permitted to go ahead with a redevelopment scheme that in essence changes the regional growth strategy boundaries that have been set in place by all the municipalities,” said Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan, chair of Metro’s regional planning committee.

Corrigan said Metro agreed to a special study area in Langley Township where more intensive development could be contemplated near TWU, in a corridor that “might be defensible” for further urban development.

But he said the local council has broadened the planned University District to include more land that Metro did not consent to consider.

Corrigan said Langley Township, if it fails in court, could still put the proposed change to a vote of the Metro board. A simple majority vote would approve the study area lands, while a higher two-thirds threshold would be needed to OK inclusion of the lands outside the study area.

“They’re sacrificing their small properties,” Richmond Coun. Harold Steves said of Langley Township, adding other cities across the region have agreed not to subdivide rural lots for dense urban-style development.

“It’s time Langley held the line too,” Steves said. “If we in Richmond did what they’re doing in Langley, we’d have about 2,000 acres of farmland threatened.”

Froese maintained concerns about a precedent are a “red herring,” adding the Agricultural Land Commission still has final say on development of land in the ALR. “I see it as a basic fundamental right of a locally elected government, which is really in

He said the University District is near the freeway and existing urban development and includes farmland that’s “not that good.”

Metro’s position is that the ALC’s determination of whether land can come out of the ALR is a separate matter from the regional board’s decisions on appropriate land use, including the regional aim of containing most growth in defined urban areas.

Langley Township wanted a mediated settlement, Froese added, but was rebuffed by Metro.

All Metro municipalities have until July 29 to file new regional context statements, which define how local plans comply with the regional growth strategy.

Most of the context statements aren’t controversial and reflect existing Official Community Plans.

One notable change is in Port Moody, where council had previously frozen new development in response to delays in approving the Evergreen Line.

HAFI adapts homes for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities

Brenda applied for a new walk-in bathtub because she couldn’t safely get out of the tub on her own.

Walk-in tubs include additional safety measures such as anti-slip floors, grab bars, and a very low step in.

Home adaptations may also include handrails in halls or stairs, ramps for

easier access, easy-to-reach work and storage areas in the kitchen, lever handles on doors or faucets, walk-in showers, and bathtub grab bars and seats.

Brenda is a strong advocate for the program and has even shared HAFI brochures with nurses in the renal unit where she undergoes dialysis.

Since the program began, more than 300 households completed renovations with HAFI financial assistance, making it possible for seniors and people with disabilities to continue to live in the safety and comfort of their home.

Glenn William Schulz is charged with making, distributing and possessing child pornography after police seized several items from his home on May 29.

Bear visits Fort Langley MIRANDA GATHERCOLE

There’s a new guy in town, and he has some Fort Langley residents bearing caution.

A large black bear has been spotted wondering down side streets and sifting through gar-

bage cans along Glover Road on two occasions by resident Ken Baber.

Baber, who has lived on Mackie Street for 32 years, says he has never seen a bear in Fort Langley before.

He saw the bear in the early morning on Saturday, July 6

,and again on Thursday, July 11.

The bear was strolling around down side streets, and helping itself to garbage outside the Simpson Hospital care home on Glover Road.

Township council endorses Agricultural Viability Strategy

Spending $135,000 a year to promote farming is not a big sum compared to the estimated $277 million the industry generates annually in Langley Township.

That’s according to a staff report that called the projected cost of the the Agricultural Viability Strategy (AVS) a “relatively small investment.”

At least one member of council was concerned it may not be enough to implement the recommendations of the strategy, a long-range plan to boost agricultural activity while at the same time easing conflict between urban and rural neighbourhoods.

“That’s maybe going to hire one or two people,” said Councillor Kim Richter.

“It’s a start,” said Councillor David Davis, a fourth-generation Langley dairy farmer.

Davis said agriculture “is a bit of sleeping giant right now” that could potentially boost the local economy far more than it does now.

“It’s unbelievable, the potential,” Davis said.

Council wrapped up more than three years of consultation and public meetings by unanimously endorsing the AVS at its Monday ( July 15) meeting, but postponed a decision on finding the funding until future budget discussions.

Dave Melnychuk, the chair of the task force that developed the strategy, told council agriculture could contribute even more to the local economy through encouraging local processing and other initiatives.

“It is a big business,” Melnychuk said.

The proposed strategy is a four-part plan to provide a “welcoming business environment for farming,” services to encourage “agri-industrial hubs” that would process locally grown food within Langley, a secure agricultural land base, and rules to ensure “best farm management practices” are used by local farmers under a “good neighbour policy” that requires farmers to be “sensitive to the needs of other citizens.”

Proposals include possible creation of a farmers’ institute to represent agricultural interests modelled on similar groups in Delta and Richmond, regulations that would require notifying home buyers “of the presence of active farm operations using normal farm practices” and offering incentives to encourage food processors to build plants in Langley to process locally grown food.

The revised strategy document approved by council directly refers to the continuing propane cannon controversy by saying the Township should “continue to work with the Propane Cannon Task Force” that created recently-enacted regulations to restrict use of the bird scare devices.

The AVS also suggests using the Township website to inform residents about “the presence of normal farm practices that result in noise, dust or odours occurring from time to time” and to also use the site to “educate residents about normal farm practices occurring at specific times (e.g. bird control activities on fruit farms) and other practices that may create issues for citizens due to lack of awareness and understanding of agricultural practices.”

axpayers are the losers as Langley Township and Metro Vancouver do battle in a lawsuit over the Township’s plans to create a university district near Trinity Western University.

Two levels of government have “lawyered up” and are spending money at a furious pace to try and prove who is right. Taxpayers are on the hook to fund both these organizations.

While the Township does have a good point in saying that it believes land use decisions should be solely within its purview, the council majority’s intransigent attitude on the university district is a key reason that this dispute has escalated into a fullblown legal battle.

Metro Vancouver, which has very limited planning and land use powers, does have the abilty to set down a regional growth strategy which designates which areas should be considered for urban and which should remain rural.

In the case of the university district, the Township chose to insert two very different areas with differing land uses within the district, which is meant to allow for expansion of Trinity Western University over the coming decades.

As noted in this space on previous occasions, land to the northwest of TWU has already been taken out of the Agricultural Land Reserve.

It is logical that this land, which is hilly and has limited agricultural possibilities (other than pasture) could be used for university expansion or related services.

On the other hand, the Wall farm subdivision, to the southeast of the university, is located in the midst of a flat, arable farm, which is within the ALR. Putting 65 homes in the midst of the farm is simply a bad land use decision — the type the Metro Vancouver guidelines try to prevent.

It has no physical access to TWU — unless residents of the subdivision plan to walk to class along the railway tracks (a very dangerous option).

Yet the Township has said the suites within these homes could potentially be rented by students.

The Wall farm is separated from TWU by the busy rail line and the Salmon River. A subdivision there sets a terrible precedent and will lead to other farmers lobbying for urban uses on portions of their farms, where there are no urban services.

Local governments should decide on land use, but Metro Vancouver is well within its rights to try and prevent such a project from proceeding.

ummer seems to be the season of senseless accidents.

A jogger is hit by a train at a busy and well-marked crossing along White Rock’s waterfront. A child falls from a window left open to capture a cooling breeze. A swimmer dives into a shallow pool of water and never resurfaces.

These kinds of tragedies seem to happen year after year.

And they especially resonate because they often involve people doing activities we’re all pursuing in the halcyon days of summer. Enjoying the outdoors. Being active. Getting away. Staying cool.

But just because we’re slowing down to enjoy the season doesn’t mean we can let down our guard.

Traffic may be diminished, but it’s still dangerous.

The water at the swimming hole may be inviting and refreshing, but dangers lurk beneath the surface.

Beers on the back deck or campsite are just as intoxicating as those consumed in the pub on a Friday night.

Of course more people are out and about, enjoying the sunshine and warm temperatures, so the odds are more accidents are likely to occur.

But the zeal to get out, to maximize our enjoyment of these months before the winter rains and chill settle in again sometimes leads to lapses in judgement.

Seemingly inconsequential acts like leaving a window open, rolling a stop sign, not looking both ways before crossing a street, ignoring a prominently-placed warning notice can come with huge consequences.

Sometimes even fatal ones.

British Columbians love the outdoors. Partly because there’s so much of it at our doorstep and it’s so beautiful. Partly because we spend so much of the year seeking shelter from it when rain and snow fall from the sky.

Just remember to be careful out there.

Grand old lady has turned 65 Editor: On July 14, a grand old lady turned 65. Perhaps not so old, but still grand. She’s had a few face lifts — a nip and tuck here and there — some things added and others removed. But she remains as dependable and as effective as she has always been.

Langley Memorial Hospital, conceived from a need, born from perseverance and hard work, and nurtured by dedicated professionals, still stands proudly at the top of Hospital Hill. She is a testament to the accomplishment of a few committed citizens who had a vision those many years ago. The people who gathered at the top of the hill in front of the new 35-bed cottage-style hospital that warm July day must have been ecstatic to see their longawaited dream become reality.

That, of course, was only the beginning.

It took people such as Dr. A.O. Rose, Dr. Chapin Key, Director of Nursing Marion Ward, Assistant Director Peggie Young, Head Nurse Iris Mooney, medical, nursing and technical staff, administrators and so many more, to bring competence and compassion to what would have otherwise been merely a building.

For 16 years, the cottage served the needs of the citizens of Langley, but no

sooner were the first patients admitted on Sept. 1, 1948, than the building was judged inadequate. Renovations added more beds but the community was experiencing population growth.

Following years of negotiations with the B.C. government, a new building known today as the 1965 hospital received the go-ahead. Additions through the years have added beds and services, to bring the grand old lady up to the standard she enjoys today.

For almost 50 years, the affairs of LMH were governed by the Langley Memorial Hospital Society, made up of citizens from all walks of life. But on April 4, 1997, the health minister notified the hospital board that its services were no longer required, and LMH was ordered to amalgamate with three other area hospitals to form the South Fraser Health Region. Thus, the citizens of Langley lost control of their hospital, 48 years and nine months after the society received its charter.

A few months earlier, the LMH Heritage Committee, comprised of mostly retired staff — physicians, nurses, administrative and Auxiliary, along with a Langley historian — was formed to write the 50-year history of the institution. Four years in the

My daughter answered an ad on Craigslist for One Direction tickets. The ad offered floor tickets, row 6, seats 5 and 6, for sale for $600. My daughter contacted the seller and was told they were still available. There was a hard copy with a receipt.

My daughter and my husband made arrangements to meet a girl by the name of Sara at the Central City Mall in Surrey.

They met her, my husband checked out the tickets and felt they were real tickets and there was no fraud. They handed over the money and the exchange was made.

One week later, my daughter was on Craigslist just checking to see what else was being offered for sale. She noticed an ad offering exactly the same seats for sale for the same price. The posting had just been put up that day.

We contacted this girl on two different phones to ask if the tickets were still available and to confirm if they were in fact floor row 6, seats 5 and 6.

In 2000, the committee, in co-operation with the Langley Heritage Society, both local councils and numerous Langley citizens, became active in trying to save the cottage hospital from demolition. Although the building was eventually torn down, the property was not turned into a parking lot as the FHA had planned, and the stone wall was saved to become a part of the new building.

Memorial Cottage, a psychiatric unit, sits on the footprint of the original LMH and resembles it in appearance.

I encourage all newcomers to Langley, especially those employed at the hospital, to get a copy of the The Hospital on the Hill and read about the dedicated men and women who, through foresight, persistence and hard work made it possible for the grand old lady to celebrate her 65th birthday this month.

Fake concert ticket scheme rips off teens

CHARITY HURT Editor: I’d like to thank the thieves who brazenly stole two bags of bottles and cans from beside my house in the early hours of Monday morning.

I collect these during walks with my dog, or from various friends and relatives to raise funds for the Fraser Valley Humane Society.

Their (the thieves, that is) actions meant I didn’t have to sort or return these items. Unfortunately, it also means that the FVHS isn’t getting their donation from me this week.

Yes, the BC Hydro rate increase tsunami is coming after the earthquake of B.C. government debt.

This will hit lower income people — hard. All levels of government are increasing fees and service rates, rather than raise income taxes on those who can contribute more and pay more property tax.

I don’t want to see any drastic action to increase job losses, but governments at all levels need to limit their spending growth to the level of inflation and get borrowing under control.

GREAT LIFESTYLE Editor: I have been following with interest the situation at Forest Green manufactured home park (MHP), as I live in another such park in Langley Township.

For your readers’ information, Forest Green was never zoned as an MHP. However, there are at least four parks in Fernridge (Pineridge on 196 Street, Deer Creek on 198 Street, Cedar Lane on 200 Street and Fernridge on 24 Avenue) that are MHP’s and are zoned as such in the new OCP. It is a wonderful lifestyle. Many of us would not live anywhere else.

There are several for sale at the moment and I would like to invite any one to come and see them.

What the opposition has dubbed “Christy Clark’s wheelchair tax” is another case in point. A Fraser Health Authority official patiently explained what was really going on here.

An average $35 monthly rent for wheelchairs is charged at the majority of care facilities, which are contracted by the health authority. Operators charge as they see fit for maintenance, disinfection and replacement of this equipment, for patients who don’t

own their own chairs.

In September, a $25 fee is to be extended to the few facilities still directly run by Fraser Health, which have aging equipment and no fees.

In all facilities, the fee is waived for those who can’t afford it.

It would be useful for our politicians to frankly discuss the trend towards contracted health services, and the role of user fees in forcing people to take more responsibility for maintaining their own health.

But that is not what happens.

The narrative of dumping frail, impoverished seniors from their wheelchairs has no relationship to reality, but it’s how post-modern political theatre is done.

by Kristyl Clark Times Reporter The Fraser Valley, long known as the road cycling mecca of BC, is once again the location of what will become one of Canada’s premier cycling events.

On July 21, cyclists from all over the province will unite in the historic village of Fort Langley where the second annual Prospera Valley GranFondo kicks off – a non-profit ride sponsored by Prospera Credit Union, which raises money for the BC Special Olympics.

Riders will get to soak up the mountain views and scenic Fraser River as they participate in a 160 km GranFondo, an 88 km MedioFondo, or a 50 km PrestoFondo.

“It’s a chance to marvel at we all have here in our backyard, which is the most beautiful cycling terrain in all of

BC,” said Nerida Bullock, one of the event’s organizers.

The mother-of-two from Abbotsford participated in the ride last year and enjoyed the entire experience from start to the finish line.

“It’s on the smaller scale, more relaxed and appeals to a wide range of cyclists, from the seasoned professionals to people who are doing their first GranFondo.”

Safety is key in organizing a successful ride and the Prospera Valley GranFondo is no exception.

“We have incredible well-managed routes,” said Bullock matter-of-factly of the individual or team-timed cycling event. “There will be dedicated lanes, select road closures and the proper right of way for cyclists.” see GranFondo, page 16

A year of two milestones for cyclist

by Kristyl Clark Times Reporter When Jason Brown was approaching the big 4-0, the wheels began turning in his head on how he could live a more active lifestyle.

After taking his friend’s bicycle out for a spin, the Abbotsford resident knew he had discovered his personal road to good health – in fact, it would be a road he’d be spending a lot of time on in the coming months, rain or shine.

“I guess I caught the bug,” laughed the father-of-three, who decided biking would be his ticket to a healthier, more active lifestyle.

As a photographer, Brown spend a lot of time sitting at a desk working on his art – the latter would help him purchase his dream ride – a blue and white Tarmac road bike.

With the cost of the bike at a whopping $2,400, he decided to use his creativity – quite literally – to be able to make the hefty purchase.

“For my 40th birthday I did a fundraiser y with friends and family where I sold my

personal artwork to raise enough money to purchase the bike.”

Fortunately for the commercial photographer, who specializes in architecture, it wasn’t a hard sell.

Old Yale Bistro celebrates 20th anniversary Kees Mijinke does it all as owner of Langley City restaurant

City, celebrated its 20th anniversary on Monday (July 15).

What makes the place unique is it is essentially a one-person show as Mijinke does it all: the prep work, cooking, serving, bartending, bussing the table afterwards and then washing the dishes.

Working with food and people is what he had done all his life.

Originally from Holland, Mijinke learned his trade in Belgium, where he went to school for four years. He spent a couple of years after that working on cruise shops

The original plan called for a cappuccino bar, but Kees Mijinke instead opened a French bistro-style casual fine dining restaurant.

And the Old Yale Bistro, located in downtown Langley

and then moved to Canada in 1971, settling first in Montreal, and then a few years later in Vancouver.

In the mid-70s, Mijinke ended up in Langley, working at the original Old Yale Bistro (which is now Choo Choo’s) as the head waiter.

The restaurant eventually moved to what is now Sonoma Grill, and a short time later, Mijinke also made a move, working as a general manager at Boston Pizza.

When his former boss at the Old Yale Bistro opened a new restaurant in Abbotsford,

Joseph’s Country Inn, Mijinke went back to work there before deciding to venture out into opening his new restaurant.

It is open Tuesdays to Saturdays for lunch, closes for a few hours and then re-opens for dinner.

And while Mijinke does most of the work himself, he has been helped by his family along the way.

“Three of my kids basically worked for me on a steady basis and one of them, once in a blue moon,” he said of his four nowgrown children.

“I never forced my kids to

work for me, and I paid them just like anyone else, they were employees.

“The nice thing was they were teenagers, so this way I knew where they were.”

His wife, Inge, did work with him for a short time, but “she was not a restaurant person” Mijinke said with a laugh.

She works as a registered nurse at Langley Memorial Hospital.

He will still call on his kids or their spouses for some occasional help such as when continued, PAGE 32

Mijinke is planning some sort of celebration to mark 20 years, but will hold it in the fall when more of his regular cliental are back in town.

While Jordan Lennerton may not be right where he thought he would be when he was a young child, the future does look promising.

“My goal when I was four years old was to be a professional player,” Lennerton said by phone earlier this month from Toledo, Ohio.

“I didn’t expect to play in the minor leagues or have a minor league career, my goal was to be a big league baseball player.”

The 27-year-old first-baseman is amidst his first season at the Triple-A level with the Toledo Mud Hens, the top affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers.

“As I got older, I got to experience different things and the dream started coming true year by year,” he said.

“I have done some pretty cool things that not a lot of people get a chance to do.”

Ever since he began playing the sport back with the Langley Baseball Association, Lennerton has gone on to big things.

In 1998, he was part of the Langley All-Stars, who represented Canada at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. He continued on in the game and played at the Junior League World Series, the Babe Ruth World Series, and then the NCAA College World Series, helping the Oregon State Beavers win the championship in 2007.

Lennerton was drafted by the Tigers in the 33rd round of the 2008 draft.

He was previously selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 50th round in 2004 during his final season with the Langley Blaze Premier U18 program.

But after graduating from Brookswood Secondary, Lennerton elected to go play junior college ball at El Paso Community College.

It has been a busy week for Langley’s Jordan Lennerton. On Sunday, the 27-year-old played in Major League Baseball’s Futures Games in New York. And last night, he was scheduled to play in the Triple-A all-star game in Reno. school and after one more season at El Paso, took a scholarship offer to Oregon State.

He signed with the Tigers after graduating from university in 2008 and has worked his way up the organization’s farm system, landing in Toledo at the start of this season.

The 2012 season is when Lennerton said he felt he was making headway to his goal of playing at the MLB level.

“I began putting up some better numbers and started getting myself recognized a little bit,” he said.

He hit .269 with 21 home runs and 82 RBIs in 139 games at the Double-A level and has built on that through the first 94 games of this season with the Mud Hens.

Through July 12, Lennerton was batting .299 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs. His play has earned him accolades, such as an invitation to play in MLB’s Futures Game, which was held on July 14 at New York’s Citi Field.

Lennerton was the lone Canadian on the roster for Team World, finishing with a walk and a sacrifice fly in his team’s 4-2 loss to the U.S. team.

He is the fifth Blaze alumni to be selected for the game, joining the likes of Brett Lawrie, Tyson Gillies, Kyle Lotzkar and Scott Mathieson.

Following that, he flew to Reno, Nev. for the Triple-A all-star game, which was scheduled to be played last night (Wednesday).

He played in the Eastern League Double-A all-star game in 2012 as well.

As for the key to his success, Lennerton said it is no secret.

“Just continuing to do what I feel comfortable doing,” he said.

“Focusing more on rhythm and comfort in the batter’s box instead of worrying about production and putting pressure on myself.”

Lennerton has had solid numbers since turning pro: his lowest batting average (.222) came in his first year. Since then, he has hit .282, .295, .285 and .269 before this season. During that time, he has averaged a dozen home runs and 63 RBIs per season.

capable of (but) it wasn’t until last year when I kind of refocused, got my thoughts right and put together a year that I can ultimately be happy about,” he said.

“The biggest change I made was making sure my thoughts were in the right place, being positive and not letting the tough days get to me and always trying to be find something positive about every situation.”

“If you are not in the right state of mind, then baseball can wear on you,” he added.

“A lot of people say (the season) can be a grind, but it is only a grind if you let it be a grind.”

Life as a professional baseball player can be taxing.

For one thing, you are away from home — Lennerton’s parents live in Langley as does his fiancee — while his older brother Ryan, lives in College Station, Tex. and works at a baseball academy.

Lennerton lives in an apartment, with one of his teammates, in Toledo.

And while it may not be home, it beats the alternative of being on the road.

“Hotels can kind of wear on you,” he said. “They can be nice, but there is no ‘home’ feeling.”

But most of his time is spent at the ball park.

Lennerton will wake up between 9 and 11 a.m., depending on the game the night before, and then make his way to the ball park at about 1 p.m. He will workout, spend some time in the hitting cages at 2:30 p.m., take batting practice at 4 p.m. and then dinner and game time at 7 p.m.

“Even if things aren’t going great for me, I don’t see it as a grind, I am doing what I truly enjoy doing,” he said.

“I can’t worry about what else is going on. I can’t worry about when my shot is going to come because that is going to consume me and I feel like it is going to set me back.

“If I focus on what I am doing, I can stay positive and take it dayby-day.”

After wrapping up the Amateur title on Friday, Hughes was back on the golf course on Monday at the Aldarra Golf Club in Samammish, Wash. for a U.S. Amateur sectional qualifying event.

His low score of 141 qualified him for the U.S. Amateur next month in Boston.

Prior to that, the recent University of Washington graduate — where he also golfed for the Huskies — has two more big events: the Pacific Coast Amateur, which begins July 23 at Capilano Country Club and then the Canadian Amateur at Victoria’s Royal Colwood Golf Club and Gorge Vale Golf Club from Aug. 6 to 9.

Hughes, who now calls Langley home — he grew up in Maple Ridge but his parents moved from Maple Ridge to Burnaby and now Langley while he was away at school — hopes to spend the next year playing on the Canadian national amateur team. He did for part of the year last year, but missed some events with the team because of his schooling.

“If I get on this year, I will be able to play and practice for the whole year without school,” he said. “I will be able to devote myself to golf 100 per cent and then turn pro next year.”

Right now, Hughes splits his time training between Seattle and his home course, Swane-Set Bay Resort and Country Club.

While Charlie Hughes is kicking himself for needing a playoff, he is just glad he was able to play a few extra holes and capture the B.C. Amateur golf championship.

“I never should have taken my foot off the gas,” he said, referring to the fact he was up four strokes with five holes to play in Friday’s final round of the Amateur championship, which was held at Invermere’s Copper Point Golf Club.

“Things were looking reasonably good and then things started looking really ugly,” he said with a laugh.

Hughes bogeyed both the 14th and 15th holes and then bogeyed the 17th hole.

Dueling with Adam Svensson — who was playing in the twosome in front of Hughes — for the tournament title — Hughes came to the final hole not knowing if he was tied or trailing.

He rolled in a 12-foot downhill putt for the birdie and a playoff.

Both golfers shot -12 under par 270 over the four days and after each birdied the first extra hole, Hughes made his third straight birdie, a feat which Svensson could not duplicate, as Hughes captured the Bostock Cup as the 111th champion of the B.C. Amateur champion.

“It just feels great,” Hughes said. “My game has been getting better lately and I have been working hard.

“I have been working my butt off and it feels really good just to get some results and get the

Victory always make the drive home that much more enjoyable. “It makes the drive less long, that’s for sure,� said Sandy Price.

She was referring to her team’s victory in the team penning competition at the Calgary Stampede earlier this month (July 3 and 4).

They were competing in the Seven Class.

Team penning consists of three riders who attempt to separate three identically numbered cattle from a herd of 30, drive them the length of the arena and then attempt to corral them into a small pen. It must also be done in 60 seconds or less. It is done four times.

Price teamed up with her 15-year-old daughter Larissa, as well as Laura Bird to take top spot, finishing with a total time of 157.200. Second place was well behind at 177.570. “It was quite the feat,� Price said.

Only five teams out of the 183 managed to pen all dozen cattle. “These cattle, they brought them right off the range in southern Alberta and they hadn’t seen people before so they were very tough.�

Price grew up on a farm in Olds,

Alta. and the family moved to Walnut Grove about five years ago.

And this was actually her second straight year winning the competition, also taking top spot in 2012, albeit with a different team. Last year, she was with Taylor Sinclair and Debbie Molnar, and they were tops in the Ten Class.

Sinclair also won in 2011, competing with her mother Cathy Sinclair and grandfather George de Jonge.

The one constant in all three years was Langley’s Fast Times Farm, which Sinclair owns..

This is where the Price’s have kept their horses and trained since moving to Walnut Grove. “If we didn’t have a place to compete and practice, we wouldn’t ever be at that level,� Price said.

The most recent victory earned the trio a cheque for $26,000 — the oversized version hangs in the barn at Fast Times Farms alongside the ones from 2011 and 2012 — and a championship belt buckle.

And both mother and daughter were thrilled to share such an experience together. “There is nothing better,� Sandy Price said. “It is just so cool to win with your daughter.� “That was the best part,� added Larissa Price.

Thunder joining cancer fight

The Langley Thunder are joining the fight against cancer.

The senior A lacrosse team is accepting bids for the team’s game-worn jerseys.

The money raised will go towards the Tessa Beauchamp Foundation.

The foundation will consist of scholarships given out yearly for basketball players, burn camps and money for cancer research.

The Surrey teen — who was on scholarship to Trinity Western University to play for the Spartans basketball team — passed away from cancer in 2012, just a few weeks prior to

her 19th birthday.

Despite her four-year battle with cancer, she was a high school all-star on the basketball court. She also overcame thirddegree burns to more than 20 per cent of her body when she was three years old.

Online bidding closes at 10 p.m. on July 23, but bids will still be accepted until the start of the third period of the Thunder’s July 24 game at the Langley Events Centre against the New Westminster Salmonbellies.

Summer Maintenance of Rural Boulevards and Ditches The Township of Langley uses three full-time and one seasonal roadside grass mower for ditch mowing. This equipment has predetermined routes or an assigned area to follow. If the equipment is pulled away to do a specific request, it only lengthens the time it takes to fully complete all the rural boulevards and ditches.

If you have a request for mowing or brushwhacking, we ask that you be patient as we try to fit the work schedule in as efficiently as possible.

The Township, along with Provincial and Federal agencies, have classified open channel water systems into three categories: Class A ditches are fish bearing and Class B ditches are fish habitat.

Both of these categories require formal approval before any work can be completed.

Class C ditches are deemed to have no fish or fish habitat issues whatsoever and only require notification for work to take place.

Georgia Ellenwood, Regan Yee both capture gold at junior nationals Not only did Georgia Ellenwood win the gold medal in the heptathlon at the Canadian junior track and field championships, but she set a new provincial record in the event and qualified to represent Canada at the Pan American junior championships in Colombia at the end of

August.

Ellenwood, who trains with the Langley Mustangs, won the event with 5,461 points, which betters her own mark by 165 points. It also moves the soon-to-be 18-year-old (Aug. 5) into ninth spot in the world junior (under 20) rankings.

Ellenwood, who will attend the University of Wisconsin in September, was competing at the Canadian junior nationals in Sainte-Therese, Que. They ran July 12 to 14. She also won the long jump with a leap of 5.65m, which is

made even more impressive by the fact she only had two attempts — compared to six for other competitors — before rushing off to her next event.

The Trinity Western Spartans also had a pair of athletes medal at the Canadian junior championships.

Regan Yee, who will join the Spartans track and field program in the fall, won gold in the 2000m steeplechase event at the Canadian junior championships.

She finished in a time of

6:46.82.

Another Spartan athlete, Nathan George, grabbed the silver medal in the 400m with a time of 47.47. The result also earned him a spot at the Pan American junior championships.

And while two Spartans were medalling in Canada, another Trinity Western athlete was doing the same on the other side of the Atlantic, at the British championships.

High jumper Emma Nuttall captured gold in the high jump, setting a new personal best at 1.87m.

Charmaine Jeffery was born Charmaine McGregor Veitch on April 23, 1929 in Brandon, Manitoba and grew up in Creston BC. Moving to Vancouver, she worked for H.R. McMillan and in 1951 settled in Langley with new husband John Jeffery. There they lived for 60 years until illness forced her to spend the last two years at the Langley Memorial Hospital 3rd floor and the Maple Hill Residence across the street.

During her very full years in Langley, Charmaine was active in the family business of Real Estate and Insurance, raised a son Bryce, and did volunteer work with many organizations including the Langley United Church where she taught Sunday school and was the Secretary for the Senior Langley United Women.

Loved by all, Charmaine balanced her outgoing personality with all the roles demanded in a small community in the 50s, 60s and on until her passing on June 27, 2013.

Predeceased by husband John (Jan. 19, 2013) and survived by son Bryce, daughter in law Marianne and grandchildren: Coralie, Tiffany and Thomas, Charmaineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legacy is one of a compassionate, engaging life helping and empathizing with others right through to her passing. Much missed, totally loved, to be always remembered.

Burial at Langley Lawn Cemetery and private services were held on July 5, 2013.

The Jefferys would like to thank the staff of LMH and Maple Hill Residence for their kind care. We would also like to acknowledge the constant and attentive care provided by Dr. Methven. All donations in her memory are requested to be made to the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation.
