Celebrating a history dating to 1897, the annual Greenwood Founder’s Day festivities got off to a great start on Friday night with a good turnout of musicians for a jam session in the park. Bernice Tetreault, who organizes music in the park in Grand Forks every Wednesday throughout July and August, helps organize live music at Founder’s Day every year too. Saturday kicked off with a parade at 11 a.m., leading everyone who wasn’t already at the park down for a day of fun and entertainment. Many were saddened to hear that long-time Founder’s Day organizer Les Williams was taken to the hospital on Saturday morning before the

parade began. This was the 15th year that Les and Nora Williams had organized the event. According to Nora, Les hadn’t suffered a heart attack as had been rumoured, but that an ongoing health problem had taken advantage of his being overworked lately. This year Councillor Barry Noll joined Williams in organizing the day by working with the Boundary Mining Association and the Association for Mineral Exploration BC to bring in professional gold panner Yukon Dan to give people a chance to pan for gold. Rock and gem merchants had set up displays and there was a gold panning competition where

Government “failing grizzlies”

A local grassroots group says that BC Timber Sales (BCTS) began roadwork on June 12 in preparation for logging in Lynch Creek North, a 3,200 hectare parcel of intact forest adjacent to the Gladstone Provincial Park, approximately 25 kilometres north of Grand Forks. Lynch Creek North is home to the threatened Kettle-Granby Grizzly Bear. According to a press release issued by the Friends and Residents of the North Fork (FRNF) the Lynch Creek North area is the last piece of unobstructed land that the grizzlies can use to travel between the highlands of Gladstone Park and the Granby River Valley. “Maintaining connections is the essence of nature” says Roy Schiesser, Grand Forks naturalist, “and nothing breaks up connectivity like a road.” Nothing stops a grizzly in its tracks like a road, and this part of the province is riddled by thousands of kilometres of roads. Local residents believe the grizzlies are being forced into smaller and smaller territory because of all the roads and logging. “In 1995, when the Granby and Gladstone Provincial Parks were created, there was an intact wildlife corridor between

the parks”, says Dave Talarico, a local resident. “Clearcut logging and road building in the past 18 years have completely trashed that corridor and basically forced the grizzly out of its traditional territory”. FRNF says that weak legislation and uncontrolled forest development has critically altered what was once secure, connected wildlife habitat. Over 160 citizens of the Grand Forks area signed a petition calling for an immediate moratorium on logging in Lynch Creek North, pending a full assessment of the cumulative impacts of the road network and logging activity in the area. Representatives of FRNF are meeting with senior officials of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources in Victoria on July 25. “We assumed Ministry officials would instruct BCTS to halt any road work and logging plans pending the outcome of that meeting”, says Margaret Steele, a local resident and spokeswoman for FRNF. According to Steele, BCTS says they are following all prescribed regulations and guidelines, but the group maintains it is these very regulations and guidelines that allowed the connectivity corridor between the two parks to be decimated.

Getting away from having photos under glass is the most awesome thing we can do, because light gets reflected away from a photo under glass and it takes away from the picture.” Wilkie was impressed when she printed a picture her brother had taken of Van-

Should I pay down my mortgage or invest in an RRSP? That is a question I get regularly from clients. While there is no simple solution, the answer depends solely on your situation. Perhaps you received a large bonus, won a lottery, or your savings efforts have paid off. Whatever the case may be, you suddenly find yourself with some extra money. Is it smarter to pay down your mortgage or contribute to your RRSP? Let’s look at the pros of each option. Pay down your mortgage. It makes sense that any extra payment that you make to your mortgage will reduce your interest costs and decrease the overall length of time that you have to pay on your mortgage. For example, a $200,000 mortgage at an interest rate of 6.5%, amortized for the standard 25 years, equals a total payback of over $ 401,000. That’s over $200,000 just in interest over the 25 years! Now if you were to make an extra payment of $1000 per year to that same mortgage, you would knock approximately 3 years off your mortgage and save over $29,000 in interest payments. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Now let’s look at the second option. Invest in RRSP’s. Now if we were to take the extra money and invest it in your RRSP instead of putting the funds to your mortgage, your retirement savings will grow more quickly. Along with your money growing tax free, contributions to an RRSP are tax deductible, which saves you money. One important thing to keep in mind is that an RRSP directly reduces the amount of taxes that you pay in the year you make a contribution. As a result, most people can expect to receive a tax refund. While it’s tempting to spend this money, there are strategies you can use to get an even bigger benefit from your refund cheque. One option is to contribute to an RRSP and use the tax refund to

pay down your mortgage. Get the best of both worlds! This strategy will give you all the advantages associated with paying down your mortgage and investing in an RRSP. This scenario will also give you access to funds in case of an emergency. Try sitting across from a lender when you lose a job or become seriously ill and tell them that you need to borrow money. Another option is to contribute to an RRSP and use the tax refund to contribute more to your RRSP. This strategy maximizes the longterm compounding of RRSP assets and helps build a solid capital base to fund your retirement. When evaluating which option makes better financial sense for you, you also need to consider a number of additional factors like your age, your income, your expected returns on your RRSP, your investment time horizon, your mortgage interest rate and the remaining amortization period. In the end, choosing the “right” thing to do depends on your particular financial situation and your long-term goals and objectives.

Bowen new co-ordinator

Larry Bowen has taken over as co-ordinator for West Boundary Highway Rescue after John Coburn stepped down last month after serving the West Boundary in the job for the past eight years. Coburn, who will remain as an active member of the unit, submitted his letter of resignation in June. A special joint meeting between representatives of Midway, Greenwood and Area E – the three funders of the regional district service – was held on July 10. Following Monday night’s Midway council

meeting, Mayor Randy Kappes said that the decision had been made to accept Bowen as the coordinator. West Boundary Highway Rescue now has 13 members, Bowen told the Times at the Founder’s Day celebration on Saturday after the crew had provided flagging for the parade. New members are always welcome. They meet for practice every other week. Contact Bowen at 250-528-0349 or any member for more information.

Rick Beaulieu of BC EcoChips stands before the chipper in the Midway log yard as a truck is unloaded and chips fly in the background.

EcoChips relocates to Midway

Driving past the mill yard west of Midway you can’t help but notice the chipping operation that is set up near the old woodlands office building. It is impossible not to see, with a chipper capable of eating three truckloads of stems an hour and throwing the chips over 20 metres into a huge pile in the logyard. The operation is owned by BC EcoChips, a company based out of Salmo, and had been operating out of the old Weyerhaeuser mill site in OK Falls for the past four years. But, according to Mike Lynn who is in charge of Fibre Management for Zellstoff Celgar, the chipper was supplying the majority of their product to the Castlegar pulp mill so it was decided to relocate to the Boundary. “We feel there is a very viable timber supply for that chipper in the Boundary area,” said Lynn, whose job it is to provide logs to the chipper. The wood that feeds the chipper is dry pulp logs and small stunted pine. He said the primary species that are chipped are lodge pole pine, spruce and balsam. Merchantable saw logs are sorted at the chipper infeed and sold to local mills. The site manager for BC EcoChips is Rick Beaulieu, who hails from Ymir. He told The Times that forest companies in the southern interior need to clear some of their tenure that is covered with lodge pole pine that are well over 100 years old but no longer growing so they can get the land back into production. These lodge pole pine stands had grown up because of the aggressive forest fire response program that has not allowed fire to naturally regenerate the forests. Beaulieu said that after the sites are logged tree-planting crews are brought in. The program returns non-productive forestland to the working forest inventory, produces jobs and reduces the fuel load for future forest fires. Lynn says the goal is to get 15 chip loads a day out of the Midway operation. Celgar produces

Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft in Castlegar that is sold mainly into the Asian market and used to make tissue products and printing, writing and high-quality paper products. Lynn said the best thing about the program is it reduces the need to burn huge slash piles. According to Beaulieu the chipper is currently only working at half capacity with three employees working an eight-hour shift. When operating at full capacity they run a ten-hour shift with five employees and the potential to fill 20 to 23 chip trucks. He said when the move was made from the OK Falls site to the Boundary most employees elected to keep their paycheque and make the daily commute, so there is currently only one employee from the Boundary. Celgar requires the chips to have no dirt, bark or limbs. So ideal conditions are when Mother Nature provides a breeze that separates the fines from the chip pile. The chipper itself has three flail chains that remove the bark from the stems before they get to the chipping knives. The unit is powered by a 1,000 horsepower V-12 Cat engine. Beaulieu said that trucks come in to the site 24 hours a day to get a load – so if locals see activity at the site in the middle of the night is most likely a chip truck driver loading his unit. Security cameras are in place at the site to prevent anyone getting too far with any after-hours criminal enterprise. He said he is very happy with the new Midway location. The company and crew have been made to feel welcome by the community. When the current Boundary timber supply review was mentioned Beaulieu said that with the chipper needing 22 logging truckloads every day sourcing logs is always a consideration. When they operated in OK Falls, BC EcoChips was responsible for procuring their own fibre – now that job is handled by Lynn in Castlegar. Beaulieu said that if anyone has private wood they would like to sell to contact Mike Lynn at Zellstoff Celgar.

Pray for wisdom Some 700,000 cubic metres of wood currently comes out of the Boundary Timber Supply Area (TSA) annually. The Chief Forester will soon be setting a new Annual Allowable Cut (AAC) for the TSA. But there is an opportunity for the public to comment before he makes his decision . The last review for the Boundary TSA was done in 2000 and there have been huge changes locally since then. Pope & Talbot is gone. So are the markets of a decade ago. The policy of appurtenancy – the guarantee that wood will be processed locally – is no longer there. Community Forests have come into being. One is in the works and other politicians in the Boundary want one too. There is only so much wood out there and everybody is feeling the competition for fibre. Perhaps no group has felt the squeeze more than the Boundary Woodlot Association. They thought they were set for expansion of their program but the land base they were counting on has now been promised to the community forest. Meanwhile logs surplus to the needs of one local mill during the economic downturn were sold outside of the area at the same time another mill was actively looking for opportunities to buy fibre. That didn’t make sense. There have been big changes in the last decade provincially too. For example, the mountain pine beetle devastation in the Central Interior and the provincial response; or the trial balloon that floated over Victoria before the election about converting volume-based forest licences into area-based licences. This invitation to comment is a limited time offer and the next chance won’t come for a long time. Pray that those locals who will be responding give the well-being of our communities the highest priority in their considerations.

Many answer call A work bee at the Rock Creek fairgrounds on the weekend saw almost 100 new picnic tables put together. In May the fair directors put a call out to the community for donations of $200, each pledge to cover the materials cost for a new table. The request was fully subscribed and volunteers began putting the tables together on Saturday morning. Grounds manager Danny Nakatsu was the lead-hand on the project. `Each table will have a brass plaque with the sponsor’s choice of engraving on it. This picture was taken at about 10 a.m. on the first day of the build. Many more people, including a kitchen crew, turned out through the day to make it all happen and another half-day was put in on Sunday.

The Black Press newspapers of the East & West Kootenay and Boundary have joined forces to bring you the best your own backyard has to offer. Read about day trips, share your own stories and photos, pass them onto family and friends.

PUBLIC NOTICE

RECALL AND INITIATIVE ACT

This notice is published pursuant to section 4 of the Recall and Initiative Act. Approval in principle has been granted on an application for an initiative petition. The petition will be issued to proponent Dana Larsen on Monday, September 9, 2013 and signature sheets must be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer by Monday, December 9, 2013. The Title of the Initiative is: An initiative to amend the Police Act. Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Initiative Advertising: Individuals or organizations who sponsor initiative advertising, other than the proponent and registered opponents, must register with the Chief Electoral Officer before they conduct or publish initiative advertising. Registration applications are available from Elections BC. Who May Sign the Petition: Registered voters as of Monday, September 9, 2013 may sign the initiative petition. Good showing for Dynneson Nevada Dynneson recently returned from the National Junior High Finals Rodeo (NJHFR) in Gallup, New Mexico where she competed in barrel racing as a member of the BC Provincial National Junior High Rodeo Team. There were 1,800 competitors from around the world, 180 in the barrels alone – and Dynneson did well for the Boundary as she came in 30th in the second round. The 13-year-old qualified for the position on the provincial team during the BC Junior High Rodeo Finals in Hudson’s Hope, B.C. in May. Willow Spring Black Angus in Westbridge sponsors Dynneson. The next stop for the youngster will be the Canadian finals in Nanton, AB, on July 25-27.

FortisBC applies for rate plan

FortisBC Inc. issued a press release last week announcing they have made application with the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) asking for a five-year performance-based regulatory plan and is requesting a 3.3 per cent increase for 2014. “Our customers have told us that the cost of electricity and reliability are their main concerns,” said John Walker, President and CEO of FortisBC. “In this application, we’re trying to balance our customers’ need to minimize rate increases, while addressing rising power costs and paying for the necessary investment to the electrical system.” According to the release, if approved by the BCUC, this regulatory application provides incentive for the utility to find savings. These savings are then shared with customers by incorporating them into electricity rates.

said Councillor Barry Noll. Bake sales and craft tables were in abundance. John and Leda Fair were selling freeze-dried food, which can be used for camping or emergency preparation kits. The Order of the Eastern Star Chapter, Evangeline #31, was on hand with a bake sale and information table. Other information tables were in evidence too as many saw the day as an opportunity to spread their message. News of the upcoming Kettle River Festival of the Arts (July 26 to Aug.11) was available at another table. FortisBC representatives Shelley Hastie and Emily Musse came to tell people about the Kootenay Energy Diet – a way to save money through lower electricity bills in the future, and rebate and low-interest loan programs for energy upgrades to your home today. Andy Shelton Fire and Electrical Services had an information table explaining how they could help with the energy diet as well as offering a special promotion on 200-amp panel upgrades for homeowners. Ciel Sander and Chantel Banman were behind a table displaying a banner from the Boundary Women’s Transition House that proclaimed, “There is help to be free of violence and abuse.” They were doing outreach work for the Stopping the Violence Program, which offers free, confidential and non-judgmental services for women and supportive individual and group counseling in the West Boundary. No one went hungry through the day. The Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department pancake breakfast was a success. They started setting up at 7 a.m. for an 8:30 opening, but the crowd started lining up at 7:30. They also sold burgers for lunch. The Legion had a concession, the Order of the Eastern Star put out beef on a bun and there was a Greek food vendor onsite too.

Panning for gold was a popular activity.

Yukon Dan was on hand to help people learn to pan.

Bill Cave, Eileen Steed and Doreen Cave were dressed in heritage costume for the day.

An ecosystem restoration project near Johnstone Creek Provincial Park is attempting to return the site to the type of grassland and semi-open grassland that existed before man began keeping fire out of the area.

Restoration under way

The results of an ecosystem restoration project in the West Boundary are easily visible from the Hwy 3 near Johnstone Creek Provincial Park just west of Rock Creek. It is there, on the north side of the highway between Johnston Creek Road East and Conkle Lake Road, that a Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO) ecosystem restoration project has been ongoing since last winter. According to habitat biologist Lisa Tedesco the Johnstone Creek site is one of seven ecosystem restoration sites in the Boundary. There are two other local projects in the Rock Creek/Midway area, she explained - the ministry completed a project at Bubar Creek over the winter and will be undertaking another in the Ingram Creek drainage this winter. Local resident Fred Marshall served as RPF and site coordinator for the Johnstone Creek project. He explained that over time, mainly because of our diligence in putting fires out, the grasslands and semi-open grasslands and semiclosed forest in the area had accumulated an inordinate number of trees. “It wasn’t really natural anymore,” said Marshall. Phase one last winter saw Bill and Ryan Bosovich selectively log the site for merchantable timber – selecting smaller trees, the ones of poorer quality, and thereby reducing the stocking density. The next phase of the contract was completed in the spring and used three different treatment options: To create a more open to semi open forest, undersized trees that weren’t merchantable were spaced and the slash was bucked and piled for burning. In selected areas the slash was left on the ground as course woody debris. The third option was to just pull the slash back from the base of some of the trees in preparation

for broadcast burning that will be done over the next two spring seasons. Tedesco said the community and other stakeholders would be consulted prior to the prescribed burns. Marshall identified many benefits flowing from the project – economic activity for the loggers, which enhanced work both for them and the workers at the mill with related spin-offs for the community, increased wildlife habitat and biodiversity, and much reduced fire hazard. Tedesco said the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation (HCTF) funded the majority of the work with support from the MFLNRO Land Based Investment Strategy Fund. She explained that portions of BC hunting and fishing license fees are dedicated to conservation projects; this money is managed by the HCTF to directly enhance opportunities to use and enjoy wildlife and fish resources. The treatments at Johnstone Creek cost $172,000, roughly $2,000/ha, which she says is in line with the averages coming out of the East Kootenay trench restoration programs. This area is within the range grazed by the nearby Fossen Ranch and alternate spring pasture has been found for them, which will be utilized this year, and following the prescribed burning. Tedesco said this rest rotation on the pasture allows the vegetation to begin recovery with reduced grazing pressure. “I hope people will see the importance and value of restoration work as a good land management tool that will help keep our ecosystems and habitats healthy and resilient now and into the future,” said Tedesco. While there is no formal long-term prescription prepared at this time, the site will be monitored for at least 10 years. “What we learn from this monitoring will help us decide how to proceed in the future,” she said.

Fifty-five years ago in September 1958, the Boundary Historical Society (BHS), then only seven years old, published its first report, a collection of stories and articles documenting the early days of towns and camps throughout the Boundary district of southern British Columbia. True pioneers of the district, including Marjorie Reynolds, Ted McArthur, Sr. and Carl Thomet, wrote these first histories and reminiscences. Over the years, the BHS has published 15 reports, all providing a wealth of historical and educational material for succeeding generations. Now in 2013, members of the BHS are preparing a new collection of family, municipal, business and industry histories for publication of Report # 16. And they are asking for help in accomplishing this task from residents who have stories to tell.

A great many have already volunteered to provide information and vintage photographs. But so far, only a few have submitted finished copy. Time is running thin to gather everything together for this publication. Society members are willing to help those who require assistance with their articles and stories. There is still time to get your heritage preserved in print. Community Archivist Sue Adrain is the primary contact for your submissions and can be reached at Grand Forks City Hall 250-442-8266 or at the Boundary Museum at 250-442-3737; or, email your submissions to boundarymuse@shaw. ca. Other members of the society have been assigned as contacts for those who have already indicated their intentions of making a submission. You will be contacted directly by those members. Look for Report #16 to be printed in early 2014 – with a little help from Boundary area budding historians.

Clean, reliable water – it’s what most people hope their rivers and water sources can provide. But how much do we know about water quality in the Kettle River, and do we have problem areas? In the survey last fall, the quality of water in the Kettle River was a major concern for residents. The phrase “water quality” was mentioned over 80 times by survey respondents, and related issues such as pollution, dirty runoff and unclean water were noted hundreds of times. Residents care about water quality be-

Photo, trophy of skier sells for $585 GREG NESTEROFF

Special to the Boundary Creek Times

An original photograph of the 1914 Phoenix ski club and a trophy that belonged to one of its members has sold on eBay for $585 US. The photo shows 13 skiers lined up on Phoenix’s main street, with numbers pinned to their chests, and all but two wearing matching sweaters with PSC crests. Engraved on the trophy is “Phoenix Ski Tournament/1914/Championship Ski Jump/2nd Prize/Won by P. Nyseter.” The competition occurred on Jan. 25, 1914, and the Phoenix Pioneer reported a good turnout despite blustery weather. Paul Nyseter (whom the newspaper called Nysater) beat seven others in a fivemile race with a time of 34 minutes and two seconds. The course began at the Canadian Bank of Commerce and proceeded to several local mines before finishing back at the starting point. Engwald Engen won the Class A jumping contest with a distance of 90 feet and was rewarded with a cup and gold medal. Nyseter came second with a distance of 85 feet. The paper said he received a silver medal, but didn’t mention a cup. Paul Nyseter was born May 28, 1882 in the skiing Mecca of Trysil, Norway to a family of 11 children. An online genealogy site indicates his birth name was Pauli Anders Nysæteren. In 1902, he left Glasgow bound for Fargo, North Dakota where he had an uncle. A decade later he came to Canada, where a younger brother, Eivind (Edward), joined him. Both men probably found work in the mines at Phoenix, where they belonged to the ski club. At the first Phoenix ski tournament in 1913, Paul placed third in the Class A ski jumping event with a distance of 69 feet and earned a silver medal. His brother Ed bested a dozen others to win the eightmile race with a time of 34 minutes and 10 seconds. In an exhibition event later that winter, Paul produced an 85-foot jump, while Ed was among several others who “creditably acquitted themselves.” At the Rossland carnival in 1915, Paul won the short-distance race in three minutes, 42 seconds, four seconds faster than fellow Phoenician Engwald Engen. Ed

came in fourth. Paul then competed for the Olaus Jeldness Cup, the Canadian ski jump championship. He had the longest jump of 76 feet, but was penalized for touching one hand to the ground when landing. His aggregate score should have given him runner-up honours, but O. Dorham of Revelstoke was awarded second place for better form. Engen took home top prize. The last sign of either Nyseter participating in competitive skiing was at the Rossland carnival of 1917, where one of them (no first name was given) finished third following jumps of 73 and 77 feet. Ed Nyseter died in Princeton on Nov. 10, 1918, age 30, a victim of the flu epidemic. He had only lived there a few months. As Phoenix descended into ghost town status, Paul moved to Slocan City in the early 1920s, where he worked as a plasterer, bricklayer, miner, and logger. Eric Winje of Slocan remembers him as an old man in the 1960s, living in a cabin near the beach. He recalls Nyseter telling him about fashioning his own skis, but didn’t know he’d once been a competitive jumper for Phoenix. “No, I never saw any skis around his place,” Winje says. “He was not a very big fellow. Maybe 5’6” at most. Seemed pleasant enough. He didn’t talk to me much but he was a good friend of my grandfather’s. Unfortunately I never asked what they

talked about.” Flem Bjerg, now of Tsawwassen, says Nyseter was a gentle man, always known around Slocan as Little Paul. “He had a little boat and was out fishing all the time. He taught me to play crib. I’d visit him quite often, but I was just a little kid and don’t remember the details of his life.” When a new sawmill was built on the waterfront, Nyseter’s shack was hauled next to the Bjergs’ property. Flem recalls Paul fell and broke his hip visiting the Grove brothers, fellow bachelor miners. “They took him to Nelson but stopped at the Queens Hotel for a couple of beers before they drove him up to the hospital.” Paul Nyseter died on March 22, 1970 at 87 and was buried in the Nelson cemetery in an unmarked grave. His obituary in the Nelson Daily News said he was “an enthusiastic skier and helped build the ski run at Rossland.”

Smart Meter “opt out” possible There may be light at the end of the tunnel for those seeking an option to having smart meter technology attached to their house. According to online news sources the government is asking BC Hydro to provide the option of paying more on your bill if you wish to opt out. “What we’re contemplating at this point is that maybe we can deliver a digital meter that has the radio turned off,” Bennett told reporters at the BC legislature last week. “We just feel that we don’t want to bully people into taking the smart meter if they don’t want it.” But the minister said that such an opt-out program would come with costs that should not be borne by the vast majority of customers who accepted wireless meters. Bennett said he agrees with B.C.’s medical health officer that signals from wireless meters are not a health hazard, but he doesn’t want them forced on people who believe otherwise. “What we’re contemplating here is actually

disabling the radio inside the meter,” B.C. Hydro’s public affairs manager for smart metering Cindy Verschoor is quoted in a Nanaimo Daily News story on Tuesday morning. “It would be a smart meter with the radio turned off.” According to the BC Hydro website research has shown that some of the new tools available through smart meters will enable customers to conserve up to 15 per cent in energy costs. Smart meters will make possible new conservation tools like secure online customer accounts and optional in-home devices that will provide homeowners with up-to-date information about power use. Once smart meters are fully installed and operational, they will also let the utility know of an outage immediately, so power can be restored faster. Groups from around the province, such as the Coalition to Stop Smart Meters (stopsmartmetersbc.ca) and the Osoyoos Indian Band have spoken out against the meters.

He was survived by several siblings in Norway and a sister in Kalamazoo. The seller of the photo and trophy, who was in Calgary, said he obtained the items at an estate sale in Fruitvale over 20 years ago. One or both Nyseters are presumably in the picture — no names are on it, but two men are appreciably shorter than the rest.

Rubgy tourney planned FRANK MORELAND Grand Forks Gazette

Oliver Glaser moved from the urban West Coast to the rural Boundary and is bringing his passion for rugby and all the rugby community-building activities that come with it. Glaser is organizing the Boundary Bash Social 10s rugby tournament in Greenwood for the B.C. Day long weekend (Aug. 3 to 5). “I want to inspire and show people of all ages how inclusive, fun and social rugby is. A tough, hard hitting game where you leave it all on the pitch but one where good sportsmanship is prized,” Glaser explained. Glaser moved to Greenwood over a year ago and was happy about the Boundary Wanderers Rugby team in Grand Forks; they have since folded but it has not deterred him. While Glaser may be a new local championing Boundary regional rugby, he is not alone, as he has his old team supporting him. Glaser has a history of playing rugby since high school and as a member of the East Van Scribes RFC. The Scribes have the organizational capacity and are volunteering to host the Greenwood tournament with Glaser’s leadership. Glaser met with the Greenwood city council in the winter, where a motion was passed to support the tournament and welcome the extra cash flow for local merchants. The Scribes are inviting teams from

who want to play in the tournament. “In rugby there is a place for everyone on the pitch; young, old, fat skinny, fast or slow,” he said. The rugby tournament games are complemented with introduction to rugby skills activities and social activities. On Saturday, the skills competitions will demonstrate kicking, precision throwing and long passes, (as well as the hilarious full contact walking rugby) while other social activities will include tug-ofwars and boat races. Sunday is fullon rugby all day and the evening has the Scribes’ house band, the Dropbears, perform live during the awards ceremony. Monday will be a recovery day, although the concession will be open for breakfast. “Out of all the sports I have Greenwood resident Oliver Glaser and the played in my life, I feel that rugby is East Van Scribes RFC team are inviting teams the most social,” Glaser said. from Canada and the United States to take Each rugby team has a clubpart in the Boundary Bash Social 10s rugby house said Glaser and there are tournament B.C.
