Chilliwack family finds Creston Valley perfect for milking operation

When it became clear that two of their four kids wanted to be in the dairy business, Randy and Carla Terpstra knew the farm Randy’s dad started farming in Chilliwack in 1971 was too small.

After assessing their situation, they decided their best option was to start a

hour drive east and far from the madding crowds of the Lower Mainland. On the Creston flats, they found what they were looking for. A parcel of more than 400 acres on land reclaimed in a 1930s diking project with good growing conditions, availability of water and no suburban conflicts, just other farming neighbours.

Federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is scheduled to arrive in Creston on Sunday as part of a summer whirlwind tour around Canada.

“Justin and his family will be arriving in Creston for a short visit at 2 p.m. on Sunday,” organizer Bill Truscott said on Tuesday.

They will appear at Rotacrest Hall (on the Creston and District Community Complex grounds) and the public is invited.

Trudeau will be moving on to Nelson afterward, and will make an appearance in Trail on Monday.

Trudeau, 31, has represented the Montreal riding of Papineau, where nearly half the population claims neither English nor French as its mother tongue.

As a member of Parliament, Trudeau’s responsibilities have included the Liberal party critic for youth, post-secondary education, amateur sports, multiculturalism, citizenship and immigration. He also sat on the parliamentary committee on the environment and sustainable development and citizenship and immigration.

A schoolteacher by profession, Trudeau was elected leader of the Liberal Party of Canada in April. He succeeded Michael Ignatieff, who led the party to disastrous results in the 2011 election.

In 2012 the Terpstras started their move east. Two barns, 120 by 180 feet and 126 by 326 feet, were built, a waste management system was constructed and the Creston Valley’s second rotary milking parlour was installed.

Today, those barns are home to 250-300 cows, 130 of which are producing milk.

Every other day, an Agrifoods tanker truck arrives to haul away about 7,000 litres of milk from tanks that can hold more than twice that.

Instead of closed-in sidewalls, the larger barn features roll-up blinds that are operated mechanically. Light and air flood in, keeping the air fresh and reducing the use of artificial lighting.

Randy and Carla purchased the land in 2004 and leased it to another farmer. When the time was right and Bryan was ready to leave his job as a draftsman at a Chilliwack sawmill, they put the family farm of 40 years up for sale. It sold in February 2012.

As to financial viability, it’s easy enough to paint a broad picture.

A dairy farm on 79 acres with two houses in Abbotsford is currently listed for $6.875 million.

Prosecutor considers Bountiful charges Cranbrook Daily Townsman The RCMP has handed over a report on the polygamous community near Creston to B.C.'s Criminal Justice Branch.

Now independent special prosecutor Peter Wilson will examine the report and determine whether criminal charges should be laid against people connected to Bountiful.

Possible charges could relate to sexual exploitation and other alleged offences against minors by people associated with Bountiful between the early 1980s and today. Wilson could also recommend charges of polygamy.

A statement by the Criminal Justice Branch, issued on July 10 said the RCMP handed over portions of its investigative report on July 3, but more material is likely to come from the RCMP over the coming months.

specific timeline to review the extensive investigative material, he did say it would likely be a number of months before charges could be laid. Before charges are laid, he must be confident that there is a substantial likelihood of conviction, and that a prosecution is in the public’s interest.

The RCMP has been investigating plural marriages in Bountiful for nearly two decades.

In 2009, two Bountiful leaders, Winston Blackmore and James Oler, were charged with polygamy, but the charges were thrown out when a judge ruled the men’s rights were violated.

In November 2011, the BC Supreme Court upheld laws against polygamy in Canada.

The RCMP has been investigating allegations that teenage girls were taken from Bountiful to another fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints community in the U.S.

Resident avoids scam by checking with police Creston RCMP responded to 91 calls from July 8-14, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday.

July 8 •An Erickson Road resident saved himself some money when he checked with police prior to getting got in a “secret shopper” Internet scam.

•A report of a missing person was canceled shortly after when the male returned home.

•Police were called to 44th Street to assist emergency health services personnel with a male in a medical emergency.

•A vehicle was reported to have been broken into three days earlier.

Thieves removed the starter.

•A dispute about logging a 48th Street property broke out between family members.

•A Ninth Avenue South resident reported cash was taken from a bank account in what appears to have been the fraudulent use of an ATM card.

July 9 •Harassing Facebook messages were reported by a Highway 3A resident.

•A satellite radio and coins were stolen from an unlocked vehicle on South Street in Yahk.

•When police conducted a requested well-being check on a female hitchhiker, they found her in a confused state and took her to hospital. She was later reported again, this time wandering and appearing disoriented on Canyon Street.

•Youths reported to be jumping into the water from the Goat River Bridge were gone when police arrived.

•Police were called to a dispute

•A report about a vehicle reported to be driving erratically eastward through Kitchener was forwarded to Cranbrook RCMP. •Police were called about a landlord-tenant dispute on Vancouver Street.

•A wallet was found on 18th Avenue South.

•A possible drug deal in a Northwest Boulevard parking lot was reported 30 minutes after the occurrence. Police believe the suspects did not hang around reminiscing about the old days.

•No theft was noted in a break-in to a Peters Road cabin in Crawford Bay that happened in the last six weeks.

•Police were asked to check on the well-being of a female on Railway Avenue in Yahk because her car door was open in her yard. She was fine and had left the car door open unintentionally.

•A report of a motor vehicle accident just south of the border was forwarded to Idaho police.

•A ticket was issued to a driver who was in a collision on Northwest Boulevard and then ran off on foot, leaving the vehicle running.

July 12 •A 48-year-old female complained that a 59-year old male had called her a vulgar name.

•A male who caused a disturbance on the Kootenay Lake ferry was arrested for being drunk in public and held overnight in police cells.

•A customer gave a fake prescription to a Canyon Street pharmacy.

•A male identified as a thief in a Northwest Boulevard store is being processed through the restorative justice program.

•The thief of 11 bags of beer cans and their owner are working out a mutually satisfactory agreement.

•After a complaint about uttering threats on Highway 3, a male was found to be intoxicated. He was arrested and held in cells until sober.

•No charges were laid when police were called to a Crawford Bay campground where two females were fighting.

•A male who was found intoxicated on 21st Avenue

South was arrested and held in cells overnight. His two dogs were taken to the Pet Adoption and Welfare Society for care.

•Police are investigating a report about a male who was reportedly walking on Draper Road in Crawford Bay carrying a rifle.

•A well-being check on a Crawford Creek Road female found her to be in medical distress and she was taken to hospital.

July 13 •A male on Highway 3 denied being in breach of a noalcohol probation order. He demanded a breath test, then refused to blow when it was offered.

•The owner of a wallet found on Highway 3A said it was missing cash and credit cards when it was returned to him.

•Police received a complaint about a Sunset Boulevard resident appearing nude in his yard.

•A male who was refused entry into Canada at the Rykerts border crossing was escorted back to the U.S. entry point by police.

•Of 100 vehicles stopped in a check at Northwest Boulevard and Devon Street, four had equipment problems that warranted verbal warnings and one driver was issued a ticket.

July 14 •When police found youths who were reported to be noisy on 19th Avenue North they found the kids were taking part in an organized scavenger hunt.

•The welcome to Creston sign on Highway 3 east of town took on a whole new meaning when a 19-year-old female driver swerved across the road and hit it. She was issued a ticket as a memento of the event.

•Police were called to 33rd Avenue South to assist emergency health services personnel with a belligerent patient.

•A person reported missing from a Canyon-Lister Road residence was located and taken to hospital for a checkup.

Kaslo couple wants Pink Garden Tea offering cheetahs in town relaxation and refreshment

A couple with close ties to Kaslo is considering bringing their two cheetahs to the north Kootenay Lake community in hopes of expanding its tourism base while helping an endangered species.

Earl Pfeifer and Carol Plato own Kane Manor in Kaslo, and when it was saved from fire by neighbours and the fire department a few years ago, the couple realized how truly special Kaslo is.

“We couldn’t get over how fortunate we were to live in such a wonderful, caring community,” said Pfeifer. “We often talked about finding ways to give back to the town.”

On June 28, about 40 people attended a presentation in Kaslo to hear about the couple’s idea of bringing their two cheetahs, now living with them in their second home near Toronto, to town.

“If we were to build this business back home it would mean a Kaslo business would be offering services that cannot be found anywhere else in North America and that uniqueness could be extremely beneficial for Kaslo,” said Pfeifer.

Needing Kaslo’s support to gain necessary permits, the couple is being proactive in the endeavor that is still likely years away from realization.

The most difficult milestone of their cheetah project has been achieved, however. And that is actually getting cheetahs, a “class one highly endangered cat.”

“They are virtually impossible for all but large zoos to import,” says Pfeifer. “The good news is that on

Pfiefer describes cheetahs as the original “fraidy cat.” There is no record of a wild cheetah killing a human in the 4,000 years since Egyptians first started keeping the cats captive, he said.

Today, there are fewer than 10,000 cheetahs left in the world and their numbers are declining by nearly 1,000 per year.

“By the time a child entering J.V. Humphries school this fall is 15, the chances of him being able to ever see a cheetah in the wild will be almost zero,” said Pfeifer.

Kaslo Mayor Greg Lay says council hasn’t made an official decision and while regulations are fuzzy, he supports the idea.

“This would absolutely have a tremendous benefit for Kaslo because it would be the only place in Canada, where people could come to walk with these cheetahs, get their picture taken,” he said.

He understands that people may have difficulty with the idea based on safety issues and concerns about keeping wild animals captive but he sees this cheetah program as good education and stewardship of the animals.

“Their challenge is to demonstrate they can, in fact, care for these animals and meet these rather difficult requirements that don’t really deal with a small operation like this,” says Lay. “Earl is a very responsible person, not some fly-by-nighter out there. He’s done all the work, been to Africa, he’s talked with several organizations in the United States.”

I sat at his desk and looked across the room at a Warner Brothers cartoon print he loved. On the left, huddled into a group are a somber Tweety, Sylvester the Cat, Yosemite Sam, Speedy Gonzalez, Foghorn Leghorn, Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig and Pepé Le Pew, all with eyes and mouths closed.

On the right, in a bright yellow spotlight is a microphone on a stand. Beside the illustration is printed “Mel Blanc 1908-1989” and the print’s title, Speechless. The sobs and the tears came, as I knew they would, and I sat until they had run their course.

An hour earlier I got the call I had been dreading all week. “Rand has left us.”

I first met Rand Archibald in August of 1990. I was advertising manager at the Advance and he had just moved to Creston to take over as manager of what is now the Creston campus of College of the Rockies. We met in his office, talked advertising and learned a little about each other. As I was about to leave, he said, “We should get together for lunch sometime.”

That sentence, that little gesture, led to a deep friendship that lasted for nearly a quarter-century. For most of that time we were fellow Rotarians.

He sat on the board of directors of a sustainable communities pilot project for which I would become co-ordinator. I lured him to run for the credit union board and he succeeded me as president. When he and Barb married they bought a house on the Scott Street block I live on, and we named the area Lorandville, combining our first names. We used to joke that we alternated our positions of mayor and sheriff weekly. We watched over each other’s houses and swapped vehicles when needed.

We continued that lunch tradition through the years, talking about any-

At TAPS, seniors engage with new friends and reconnect with friends from their past. We often have visitors who are not seniors and they are most welcome. We make many trips into the community and are welcomed wherever we go. We are lucky to be part of such a wonderful community.

TAPS seniors know about the Creston community, they helped it grow, so they requested a “staycation” summer. We were fortunate to be able to engage a bright young woman to arrange this project for us.

Wendy is our summer student and she has brought much activity, energy and fun to TAPS. We have participated in Canada Day celebrations, museum visits, art gallery tours and visits to the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. Garden parties and miniature golf are on the list, too.

TAPS is doing its part to help seniors be healthy and happy. Please join us!

Duct taping principal was ‘innocent fun’ To the Editor: (Re: “Fundraiser pic sends bad message”, page 7, July 11 Advance) With all due respect, Leila Burton needs to lighten up. Her letter to the editor in last week’s Advance, about retiring principal Nancy DeVuono being taped to a tree as a fundraiser, misses the mark entirely.

There are so many activities that under the excessive scrutiny for political correctness could be construed as being negative. I’ll overstate my case (as Ms. Burton did) to prove my point.

Should we ban frozen tag and charades? After all, both of these games make some of the participants “helpless and silent”. We’re talking about harmless, innocent fun with Mrs. DeVuono — no less, no more.

Taping teachers to a tree or a wall has been around for several years, most often used to give a retiring teacher, or one transferring to another school, a friendly sendoff by the students. If one examines the intent, while witnessing the smiles and enjoyment by those present, the only conclusion to be reached is, “What a good sport the teacher was, and what fun the students had!”

Ms. Burton stated in her letter, “Surely our educators, parents and the media have a responsibility to see the bigger picture of abuse and be aware of the impact our actions may have.” I’m not taking this topic lightly, as I know that abuse is a scourge of humanity around the world. However, I do wonder what “impact our actions may have,” according to Ms. Burton. Is it that abuse victims will be traumatized by the photo or is it the influence the photo might have on potential abusers?

And contrary to what Ms. Burton suggests, students who saw that picture would not become “fearful of going to school”. They’d think, “Cool! I hope I get to tape my teacher to the wall.”

New housing will benefit families To the Editor: (Re: “Housing location poorly thought out”, June 27 Advance) Mr. Reider refers to a “group of well intentioned individuals” whom he then suggests have not looked at the site, and he believes will produce a slumlike ghetto that will negatively affect the ambience of the neighbourhood and the well-being of the potential occupants.

Does Mr. Reider know the level of professional competence of this group?

Does he think that the funding bodies would not be concerned with the issues he raises? This “well intentioned group” has been working on an affordable family housing proposal for at least five years. Of course they have seen the site. Of course they have considered the sensibilities of the neighbours and the community at large. Of course there will be a geotechnical survey, as well as a preliminary test of the ground having already been done. Of course the well being of the potential tenants has been taken into account.

The concerns expressed about the slum aspect of the proposal really refers to how well managed these homes will be. Of course, that has been built into the proposal, as has the concern about the criteria for occupancy by suitable tenants. It is unfortunate that Mr. Reider

lives near a building that obviously is not well managed and did not carefully screen its tenants. But that being said, when we have no affordable family housing for those families who are not well enough off to be able to afford market rents, then they must go somewhere.

Isn’t it better to have well designed, attractive, well-managed neighbourhood homes occupied by those who truly need them than to have those who are disadvantaged having to take the worst of the rental accommodations available? The attractiveness of the architectural design, complete with parking for all the units, will enhance not detract from the beauty of the park.

When I was young, poor and a single parent, I was fortunate enough to be able to get accommodation in a large, subsidized housing project, which absolutely saved my bacon.

Along with a number of other families in similar situations, we all benefited hugely from this affordable housing.

Our kids were able to participate in sports, arts, cultural activities, summer camp and all the good things that having disposable income allows. Our kids were not discriminated against or bullied because they came from affordable family homes. On the other hand, there were kids who got into trouble, had dysfunctional parents who couldn’t properly care for them, did not do well in school, et cetera. These were kids from all strata of the economic spectrum including, but not always, well off families.

The concerns raised by Mr. Reider are issues that the community will be interested in and concerned about and rightly so. What is needed, however, is the other side of the story and to have the correct information about this proposal. No one is planning to build an instant slum that will harm our community. Why not get the full picture first and then sort out what is a genuine concern and what is an incorrect assumption? I hope there will be more interest and more information to round out this story.

Programs change with seasons

As Mother Nature rotates through the four seasons, so does the community complex programming and leisure guide production. We lay out our seasons in sessions that are pretty much in accord with the solstice- and equinox-specific dates — the spring session is March, April and May, summer is June, July and August, fall is September, October and November, and, finally, winter is December, January and February.

Currently we are publishing four leisure guides to match the seasons and subsequently are nearing the point where we are doing close to final proofing on the fall edition. I’ll tell you, it is challenging to get instructors to return your calls in order to get details on programs like snowshoeing or cross-country skiing when they are headed to the lake in 35-degree temperatures in July. That’s the nature of the business of providing fun — we have to be five or six months ahead of the curve at any given time.

Our aquatics have shifted slightly now that we have hit July — for instance we have moved our midday pool shutdown for intensive cleaning from 2-3:30 p.m. to 11 a.m.-noon. As we have more kids out for public swimming now that they are out of school, as well as the tourist trade, this gives a greater unbro-

ken stretch of swimming than our nonsummer months. As well, our Red Cross swim lessons have ramped up as they always do at this time so we have a lot of bodies displacing water in the morn-

Unless, of course, they are six or under, in which case — guess what — you are going swimming within arm’s reach of them, but that’s also a good thing because you will sleep better that night while the kids watch the Letterman show.

Summer also brings a few challenges for the building as we hit a few ultra hot days and our cooling system starts nearing capacity. Of course, you can design a building to be able to handle all extremes but it would be quite a bit more expensive than what we have, whereas ours covers 98 per cent of the temperature range and a couple per cent where you sweat a bit heavier in a spin class or treadmill workout. As part of our award-winning efficiency model, you may notice that we don’t air condition certain areas of the building like hallways and some internal rooms that are not on an outside wall. In the end, though, all you need is a few degrees in variation from the outside temperature to be a relief as anyone that attended the Canada Day celebrations will attest.

As one aquatic person mentioned to me, it’s what we call a PR intensive time.

I haven’t always been a librarian, but I’ve always loved libraries, and throughout my life and travels in Canada and around the world, I have always made a point of seeking out the local libraries.

Aaron Francis My favourite libraries are not the world famous landmarks — the Bodleian, the New York Public Library, Vancouver’s Central Library.

I like the small, community libraries, with their local flavours and idiosyncrasies, and their unique solutions to basic challenges.

In Invermere, for example, the library is housed in a former RCMP building, and what was a holding cell has been transformed into a cozy reading nook.

In Vancouver Public Library’s Strathcona Branch, which doubles as a public library and inner city school library, students are assigned to take care of the fish aquariums, and the occasional grey blur indicates that the library cat is making a run for her favourite hiding place.

I’ve never visited Glendale, Ariz., but read recently that their library features a drivethrough window for picking up holds and other basic services.

In my wife’s hometown of Can Tho, Vietnam, the library has a lovely outdoor shaded area where ice cold drinks are sold, a cool refuge in a hot and dusty city.

A few weeks ago, I paid a visit to the new library in Vernon, my old hometown. Taking up two floors of a brand new building, the library was spacious and well organized, and had all of the amenities one would expect in a well-funded modern library branch.

I came away, however, feeling that something was missing. It was too sterile, too cookie-cutter.

It didn’t reflect anything about the community

or the people that live there.

It seems that the more libraries I visit, the more I appreciate our library, with its colourful walls and artwork, plants everywhere, and lovely back garden. It’s friendly and welcoming and idiosyncratic — a place that truly reflects this valley and its inhabitants. I would be remiss if I did not give credit to my predecessor, Ann Day, for her vision and artistic sensibility in helping to develop our library’s unique identity and character.

That said, we have a number of improvements to the facility planned for this year and next, some of which have already been instituted.

Improvements already started include increasing the number of free public Internet stations, including dedicated children’s computers (scheduled for next year), installing a higherquality ceiling-mounted projector in the meeting room (thanks to the Friends of the Library), and building a new teen space/casual meeting area (designed by our Teen Advisory Council and made possible by a Columbia Basin Trust grant).

Over the next couple of months, we expect to replace the green couch by the back window, add a drinking fountain and install an additional washroom in what is currently the audiovisual room (the AV room will be moved to a vacant office). Most of these improvements are the result of a series of public strategic planning consultations we conducted earlier this year. We asked you what you wanted to see in the library, and now we are making the changes. You can read the entire document, including other facility improvements not mentioned here, on our website.

The library is one of the few truly public places remaining in our society, a place that welcomes everyone without prejudice, and where folks of all ages and economic backgrounds have an equal voice. This is your library, and your opinion counts here.

The government’s recent move to reduce the number of seniors driving has long-term implications for elderly citizens. Driving gives people independence and freedom. Take away their freedom and part of their lifestyle, and a breakdown in mental health starts to occur.

In rural areas, if there is a bus, it doesn’t run frequently or stop close by for everyone. Many seniors are able to get into their car, but couldn’t walk more than a few yards to reach a bus stop.

Most of us know the feeling of trying to explain something when someone has tied your wrists together. Well, that is the same kind of feeling someone has when their freedom and independence are forcibly taken away and they can’t go shopping, to the doctor or anywhere without having to ask someone else to take them. How intimidating, and how shameful that makes a person feel when they have been used to being able to plan their own life and look after themselves!

This is what the government is doing to seniors by forcing them to go to another town, sometimes through the mountains or on icy roads to take a computer and driving test. Most seniors are not computer literate and yet are forced to take a test on the computer and drive in

a strange town in a vehicle to which they are unaccustomed. They are given a test by their physician, usually without being forewarned to take care how they answer the questions, because the results will determine if their driver’s licence is renewed.

When one examines the statistics of what age group has the most car accidents, we find it is not the seniors. It is young people in their 20s and 30s who cause most accidents. Seniors are usually careful to drive locally and not at night.

That is not to say that all seniors are good drivers; there are bad drivers in every age group.

The loss of independence and lifestyle choice is devastating to anyone who is already noticing some changes physically and mentally. Our health is very much linked to our confidence to be independent and responsible for our own lives. When part of who we are, how we live our lives and the choices we make are restricted, we may well become depressed and introverted, not feel like eating and lose interest in how we look after ourselves. We become ill, and we may spend more time in bed, causing muscle stiffness and atrophy. If we are taken to the doctor, he or she may not be able to determine the cause of the illness in physical terms. We become a burden on the medical system and on those around us.

With a compassionate and understanding society, seniors can continue to function gracefully and healthily into their later years. By supporting their identity as independent and responsible beings as long as possible, the government can save millions in health care while seniors enjoy and contribute to the lives of those in their community.

Waves start swim season CRESTON WAVE SWIM CLUB

The Creston Wave Swim Club attended its first competition of the summer season in June in Grand Forks against Castlegar, Trail, Nelson, Creston and Colville, Wash. Ten new and returning “waves” competed at this event.

Swimming in his first meet ever, Odin Bartsch raced through the pool placing seventh in Div 3. boys 50m freestyle, and third in 50m backstroke.

Amber Hare slashed 32.72 seconds off of her 50m butterfly, swimming smoothly into third place for the Div. 2 girls. Her sister, Nicole, also took incredible amounts of time off of her races, including 23.12 seconds off of her Div. 5 girls 100m backstroke, placing sixth.

Levi Huber impressed the crowd, obtaining a best time of 41.66 seconds in the boys 25m novice freestyle.

Kate Page obtained best times in three of her races, including taking 15.16 seconds off of her Div. 2 girls 50m freestyle, nearly breaking one minute with a time of 1:02.7. Her brother, Quinn, nearly set a record and placed first in boys novice 25m freestyle and 25m backstroke.

Div. 4 girl Kylee Pemberton splashed 4.41 seconds off of her 50m butterfly and 1.25 seconds off of her 50m freestyle.

Jeffrey Roelofse competed in his first meet, placing fifth in the Div. 2 boys 50m backstroke and third in the 50m butterfly.

Sebastian Thompson also raced in the pool for the first time, placing an impressive fifth place in Div. 3 boys 50m butterfly with a time of 1:11.66.

Returning swimmer Sierra Simpson took off 6.31 seconds in her 50m backstroke, placing her first for Div. 3 girls. She also took home her division’s aggregate gold medal.

Comedy festival returning to Crawford Bay

Crawford Bay will rock with laughter once again, when the Kootenay Gut Buster comedy festival runs for the third time on July 26 and 27.

Since moving to Crawford Bay from the Toad Rock Campground (north of Balfour), where it ran for five years, the festival has been a welcome addition to the East Shore’s summer entertainment.

“I think people were surprised at the calibre of the comics that were in front of them,”

said organizer Paul Hindson, who owns Kokanee Chalets.

“These guys came out and they were good, polished comics.”

This year’s lineup is equally talented, with standup comedians including Pete Zedlacher, a Gemini Award-winner who has toured Afghanistan three times to entertain the troops, Daryl Makk, president of comedy show planner the Planet Tour Inc., and James Moore, who runs Calgary’s Comedy Monday Night, western Canada's longest running comedy open mic stage.

Other names in the two-evening lineup include Matt Billon,

Scott Dumas, Andrew Albert, Cory Harding, Noor Kidwai and Ben Proulx, as well as surprise comedy guests and Julia Kinder, who won the KGB comedy contest, held at New Keys Bar in Crawford Bay on July 12. Each night opens with a performance by musical guest Marija and Shadowstalk.

And on Saturday night, Hindson, who started doing standup comedy in Calgary, will likely wind up on the stage, too.

“I’ve been doing standup comedy off and on for years,” he said. “It’s a hobby for me.”

“I still get scared to death every time I go up,” said Hindson. “Even the guys that are doing it a lot, they still get the nerves. … You can’t be afraid to fail.”

The KGB is more than just two nights of comedy — last year, it raised $1,000 for Crawford Bay school’s hot lunch program.

Also important, Hindson said, is the opportunity it provides to draw newcomers to the East Shore, something he does every chance he gets.

“It’s a beautiful area,” he said.

“All it takes is for a person to set foot here, and they come back.”

Starbelly Jam offering range of music and activities for all ages

More than two dozen acts are scheduled for this year’s Starbelly Jam, which starts tomorrow in Crawford Bay Park. Acts range from roots to hip-hop to folk to jazz, and the organizers couldn’t be more thrilled with the lineup.

“I’m excited about everything,” said Lea Belcourt, now in her second year as Starbelly’s music director. “I do love all these acts almost equally.”

One stands out more than the others, though — Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, which Belcourt discovered on CD in 2006.

“They were one of the bands that inspired me to start working for the festival,” she said. “I was like, I want to see music like that at my home.”

The Afro-beat-folk-reggae musicians hail from Freetown, from which they all fled during rebel attacks in the 1990s.

According to its website, “The band is a potent example of the redeeming power of music and the ability of the human spirit to persevere through unimaginable hardship and emerge with optimism intact.”

Some of the other big acts performing are Blue King Brown, an eight-piece urban roots group from Melbourne, Australia, that has shared the stage with Carlos Santana and Michael Franti & Spearhead; Aesop Rock (a.k.a. Ian Bavitz), a New York-born, San Francisco-based hip-hop artist-producer, recognized for his dense and abstract word play; and Locarno, the Vancouver-based Latin project of Juno Award-winning musician and Paperboys frontman, Tom Landa.

From closer to home, the Tipi Camp Tribute Ensemble will perform, offering recordings of camp life entwined with music inspired by the teachings of camp founder Peter Duryea, and Creston-based Tiizak Hamra will offer desert trance music.

Youth are well represented onstage, with the Kootenay Music Awards artist of the year Good Ol’ Goats, an alternative folk band comprised of Cranbrook grade 11 and 12 students, and Swing Theory, a seven-piece jazz band of boys in grade 9-12.

“It feels really good to have two Kootenay youth bands coming from the east and west,” said Belcourt, noting that having them perform will “let youth attending the festival know that it’s possible.

They can get on stage, too, if they want to pursue music.”

Last year’s festival attracted over 1,200 people — less than the record crowd of 3,500 — and the organizers are hoping to surpass 2,000 this year. To that end, the organizers have always tried to ensure the festival offers something — music, workshops, activities — suitable for all ages.

“It reflects the values of the East Shore,” said Belcourt. “We tend to do things with our kids. We do a lot of all ages events. The generation gap is kind of small here.

“There aren’t a lot of festivals that deliver programming to youth.

It feels really good for us to have something we can all go to.”

Born in England during the war, Ken spent his childhood and youth in Mission, B.C. For most of his adult life he lived in Langley, working with the Salvation Army teaching auto mechanics to young offenders. His last nine years were spent hunting, Àshing, and enMoying life in the beautiful Creston Valley.

Ken leaves behind Holly, his loving wife of 49 years; children Bill (Marianne), Kathy (Brad) Price, Sherry McMillan and Christina (Mike) Kristensen; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Ken is predeceased by his father George and brother David.

He is mourned by his mother Ella; brothers Bob, Stanley and Victor, and sisters Carole and Jeanne.

Ken will be remembered for his skill as a woodworker, his love of nature and a life of service.

Jean Cecelia Paulhus

December 13, 1933 ~ June 28, 2013 Jean Cecelia Paulhus passed away after a lengthy illness on June 28, 2013 at the age of 79 years, at the Swan Valley Lodge, Creston, BC. Jean was born to parents Antoinette and Joseph Coton on December 13, 1933 in Drumheller, AB. Jean was raised with her three sisters on Vancouver Island where her father worked in the coal mines. As a teenager, she adventured to Vancouver and Ontario, returning to Vancouver to continue working.

She met and married Norman Paulhus and moved to Riondel in 1957. With the exception of the last year, Jean called Riondel Crawford Bay her home for ÀftyÀve years, which she shared with John Blondeau for over twenty-Àve of those years.

Jean loved curling, camping, dancing and enjoyed gatherings of friends and family.

Jean was predeceased by her son, Michael Paulhus.

She will be lovingly remembered by her partner John Blondeau; children Shelley (Ken), Wayne and David; step-children John, Dan (Lorette), Cathy, Shelly (Paddy) and Cindy (Ken); twenty grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service to be held at a later date.

Any friends wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to the charity of the donor’s choice.

With disbelief and heartbreak we sadly announce the passing of Myron Lester Ballard at the age of 74.

Myron was born in Spalding, Saskatchewan on August 10, 1938. At a young age he and his family relocated to the Kootenay region of BC, where he met and married Roseanne and raised Àve sons. He loved gardening, hunting, Àshing, his dogs and maintaining his hobby farm. After raising his family he later met and married Marilyn and spent his retirement years with her by his side on the farm tending his gardens and animals.

Myron lived life with no regrets and enjoyed his many friends in Crawford Bay. Myron was predeceased by his parents Floyd and Magdalena; wife Roseanne; sons Jody and Tim; brothers Gary, Ken, Loyal, and daughter-in-law Charmaine.

Left to mourn are his wife Marilyn; children Kelly (Julie), Dennis (Ann), and Darcy; stepchildren Sharon (Rick), Cindy, Richard (Crystal), Shannon, Terry (Jeff), and Kevin; grandchildren Wanda (Dave), April (Scott), Tiffany, Bryce, JacTueline, Shane, Shivon, Amber, Tony, Dallas, Logan, Jackson, Kevin, Chelsea, Jennifer, Heather, and Paige; great-grandchildren Bo, Jodi, Kahleah, Lily, and Draydon. Also left to mourn is his sister Phylis Schol], numerous extended family and friends and his beloved dogs Sally and Buster.

A Celebration of Myron’s Life will be held Saturday August 10, 2013 at “the Farm” in Crawford Bay, BC starting at 3 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA locally or nationally.

Eric Johnson and friends singing at Sasquatch SUBMITTED

Eric Johnson and friends — Ted Bryant, Debra Mehrer and Shelli Morris Hutcheson — will present a concert, Plan Bee, on July 21 at the Snoring Sasquatch.

Johnson is a venerable member of the music scene in Creston, Nelson and beyond. He is a multi-instrumentalist, performing on guitar, vocals, drums and other instruments.

He plays in a multitude of bands and is a mentor to many musicians, always patient and encour-

aging and extremely generous with his time. Johnson drums with a supple touch and steady rhythm, and is adept at playing almost any genre from swing to Latin, rock, folk, country or concert band.

Listening the music of the 1960s left a distinct and lasting impression on Bryant as a teenager at that time.

Influences including the Rolling Stones, Bo Didley, Paul Butterfield Blues Band and even Herman’s Hermits created the bond between Bryant and his guitar.

Originally from Vancouver, Bryant played in bands including Teen Angel, Armed and Dangerous, and Mule Train with Tom Russell. Now living in Creston, he is the front man for the Kings of Kitchener. In 2010, they released their first CD, After The Rain, a collection of some of Bryant’s original songs together with a refreshing take on popular cover tunes.

He is a master of quick wit and comic relief and pours all his energy into his

performances because, as he puts it, “It is more than playing music — people want to be entertained!”

Mehrer appeared on the music scene about six years ago, playing bass and doing vocal backups with Celtic-folk band Peanut Butter and Jam. She has played bass and done some vocal work with Gone Country, and was the bassist with blues-rock band Fat Charlie. She is exploring the solo aspect of singing and is enjoying the adventure of everything from folk to classical.

As a recent graduate — “You can never graduate,” she said. “There is always so much more to learn.” — from the Buchanan Studio of Music, she was inspired by her teacher Geri Buchanan to reintroduce herself to the community as a serious soloist.

for folk and roots music. She was always drawn to music and the joy she and others received from it. Hutcheson was 12 years old when she got her first guitar and her uncle showed her a few chords.

Music took a back seat to motherhood and career, however, until she opened the Snoring Sasquatch in 2005.

Although an introvert and uninterested in performing publically, she began to sing reluctantly at karaoke. After singing a few duets with Johnson, they began to perform at Snoring Sasquatch’s open stage, the Wynndel Coffee House, Swan Valley Lodge and various local events. Kilpatrick joined them to form the trio Evergreen. Hutcheson continues to perform occasionally with her musical friends.

Shane Philip doesn’t like to refer to himself as a one-man band.

“I don’t like to call myself a one-man band because people think of the old guy with the cymbals between his knees and the monkey,” he said. “I’m just a songwriter who happens to express myself with a bunch of different instruments at the same time.”

Philip was born in Toronto, grew up in Ottawa, and went to university in Thunder Bay, Ont. But if you ask him where he feels most at home, and where he imagines he’ll stay for the rest of his life, he’ll say without hesitation the West Coast.

“When I go to play in Toronto, where I’m from, they tag me as a West Coast guy,” Philip said with a laugh.

The rootsy singer-songwriter — who plays at the Snoring Sasquatch on July 24, and previously closed the Creston Concert Society’s season — moved with his girlfriend and their two-andhalf-year-old son to Courtenay from Quadra Island earlier this year, a switch that has paid off handsomely for Philip —in terms of his state of mind, the move to the Comox Valley has left him more refreshed than ever.

“I wanted to find a place where the mountains met the sea,” he said. “That was my dream.

I was always attracted to mountains, and always wanted to be by the ocean. There was always this pull to come out west. Once I got out here, I couldn’t go back. That was the end of it.”

He has lived in Banff, 100 Mile House, Smithers, Gold River, Campbell River, Nanaimo and Ladysmith, among other locales. He taught high school social studies for seven years, and raced competitively at the provincial level as a cross-country skier.

He was playing music on the side, often for his students. But creatively he felt stifled. He soon realized teaching wasn’t for the long-term. Free from the daily grind, he dove into music full-time and recorded his debut, 2005’s OM Cooking.

“It was a real snap decision,” Philip said. “I made it overnight. It was the first career decision I made that wasn’t influenced by how much money I would make. I did it trusting that money would follow, that I would be able to make a liv-

ing doing it. I’ve never really been interested in trying to get rich, I just want to make a living.”

He released his second recording, Earthshake, in 2006, followed by his third effort, In the Moment, in 2008.

Barring vast changes to his setup, he will always be known as the guy with the vast artistic arsenal.

“I do have a lot of junk with me,” he said of his cache of instruments, which evolves on a regular basis. “I’m the equivalent of a five-piece band, in terms of the gear that I have. There’s a lot going on.”

This notice is published pursuant to section 4 of the Recall and Initiative Act. Approval in principle has been granted on an application for an initiative petition. The petition will be issued to proponent Dana Larsen on Monday, September 9, 2013 and signature sheets must be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer by Monday, December 9, 2013.

The Title of the Initiative is: An initiative to amend the Police Act. Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Volunteers give fresh coat of paint to lighthouse FRIENDS OF WEST KOOTENAY PARKS SOCIETY

In early May, a group of seven volunteers gathered to start the task of painting the outside of the historic Pilot Bay lighthouse.

Between then and June 5, seven different crews comprising a total of 18 people from as far away as Castlegar and Ymir put in 160 hours to complete the job of painting the shingles, railings and metal roofing.

The building had last been painted in 2006 after Joern Wingender’s Traditional Timber Framing Company finished a complete reshingling and restoration of the building.

Constructed in 1904, the lighthouse went into operation in January 1905. With the increased marine traffic that accompanied the settlement of the area, the lighthouse performed a critical service during stormy weather and the shortened days of winter.

The light was turned off June 30, 1993, despite “...opposition from all around Kootenay Lake and throughout the region.” (Susan Hulland’s The History of Pilot Bay Lighthouse) As part of a user group coalition agreement with BC Parks, the lighthouse was saved from dismantling and BC Parks undertook to have the land and building returned to provincial jurisdiction.

For their part of the agreement, the Friends of West Kootenay Parks Society agreed to help maintain the building and access trail.

Volunteers repainted the Pilot Bay lighthouse in May and June.

The Pilot Bay lighthouse is now a part of the tourism marketing strategy of the East Shore, featured in tourist brochures. It is easily accessed from Pilot Bay Road (approximately four kilometres from the ferry landing) by a 10to 15-minute walk on a trail that winds up a slight grade through second growth cedarhemlock forest.

About halfway up, look for an old trail on the right that once led to the old Pilot Bay townsite. This is the trail that Jean Montreuil would have taken daily in the early days to tend the lighthouse lamp.
