Strengthening leadership skills in the Valley Renee Andor Black Press

COMOX — Three Comox Valley secondary students will have the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills and bring new ideas back to the Valley, thanks to Dr. Andreas Conradi.

The Comoxbased dental surgeon attended Pearson College, outside of Victoria, for two years when he was young.

Now, for the third year in a row, he’s given three $3,000 scholarships to Valley youth so they can participate in the college’s three-week summer program, Pearson Seminar on Youth Leadership.

“You get an indepth immersion into youth leadership programs and ideas, what you can bring back to the community, what you can do locally while

thinking globally, how you can act and react,” Conradi says of the program. “For three weeks you live and learn with like-minded people.”

Highland Secondary School’s Brett Dalton and Ginger Long, and Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School’s Kaitlyn Fortier were chosen for the scholarships this year and will head down to the college later this month.

Located on waterfront property west of Victoria, the program features a series of activities to strengthen leadership skills and explore global issues, and has 100 attendees from around the world. The program also includes plenty of outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking, plus various presentations designed to get students thinking

Long has already demonstrated leadership skills.

She volunteers with various organizations and initiatives around the Valley, and likes volunteering at youth camps in particular.

“I really enjoy working with younger kids because they’re going to grow into the rest of the community so they have the biggest impact,” she explains.

Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Already the summer fishing season is into mid month and the July fishing has been exceptional for Coho as anglers are fishing 60, 100 and 200 feet of water and getting many clipped salmon. Chinooks are averaging 12 to 25 pounds and the Gibbs number 8 lure Peter Irion & Tom has been a good producer. At from Hamburg Germany Discovery Pier no salmon have not been caught but tourists are coming and having fun fishing and visiting Campbell River. The catch scoreboard at the pier reads 0.

The odd pink is being caught in the saltwater but when the pinks arrive the fishing frenzy will hit hard on the Campbell River. At times anglers will be lined up elbow to elbow throwing out lures and flies. On the fly pink green and blue seen to catch fish, last year I caught many pinks in the 2.5 to 4 pound size.

A salmon mount that was recovered from a storage unit is now in Campbell River. Estimated weight is 150 pounds and the fish may have been used on the Painters Lodge brochure 1984. Talking to the fishing guides and tackle shop owners it is unlikely the salmon was caught in Campbell River.

Freshwater fishing has been good at various lakes around Campbell River and Courtenay. The Upper Campbell has been producing nice size trout.
