It’s time to rock
Colwood to gauge taste for A-word
Rock the Shores Round 2 prepares to take region by storm, but not literally An expanded Rock the Shores takes to the fields of West Shore Parks and Recreation this weekend and organizers are gearing up for the music event of the summer. Featuring big-name bands over the course of two days, the festival is quickly becoming a staple of West Shore entertainment. From local and regional bands such as Mother Mother and Vince Vaccaro to headliners such as City and Colour, Awolnation and Weezer, the festival aims to please. “I’m just looking forward Kyle Wells to another legendary rock Reporting show,” said organizer Nick Blasko of Atomique Productions. “For West Shore, but also for Victoria in general … We’re trying to create something, to do an annual event here. And I think there’s clearly the appetite.” Addressing some of last year’s concerns, organizers have tripled the number of food vendors, created more entrances to the site, have more water supplies and have expanded the beer garden. At the same time, the venue’s capacity has been reduced by 2,500 from last year. “(That is) to make sure that people have a little more room to move around on the site and to provide a better whole day-long experience for people,” Blasko said. “That’s all in an effort to serve the demand that was there and cut down on the lineups. “Certainly last year was a big learning (experience) for everyone, there were a whole bunch of things that were just unforeseen.” Blasko also hopes the weather co-operates

Canadian artist Sam Roberts, whose set was cut short last year due to a lightning storm, is back for another appearance at Rock the Shores in Colwood. this year. High winds and lightning cut short Sam Roberts Band’s set last year, making way for nature’s own rock show. West Shore RCMP will be onsite both days augmenting the event security and stepping in, if needed. Last year’s event turned out remarkably well, said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Kathy Rochlitz, noting that the extra day will require more police resources. “We’ve looked at things and tweaked things in some ways,” she said. “Come in and enjoy yourself, enjoy the day, and try to do it in a safe and controlled manner.” There’s various options for concert goers looking to leave their vehicle at home.
B.C. Transit, with funding provided by event, is putting on extra service to West Shore Parks and Recreation for both days. Cycling to the show is also encouraged and a free bike check valet service is available. Those who bike receive priority entrance through the VIP gates. Carpooling is also welcomed and there will be designated drop off and pick up areas for those catching a ride. There is limited parking for VIP pass holders, accessible via Ocean Boulevard.
With the idea for some form of regional amalgamation on the minds of many, the City of Colwood is turning to residents to find out what they think. “What does it mean to people in the community?” asked Mayor Carol Hamilton. “What do they think it will achieve if that were to take place? Is there an interest even in doing it?” This fall, a group of residents and council members will begin meeting to look at options for public consultation. Hamilton expects it will take six to eight months of open houses and surveying the community to get a sense of public opinion. The results will help council decide whether to support placing a referendum question about Capital Region amalgamation on the ballot for the November 2014 civic elections.
