Chicks take ball tourney title “It’s going to be really, really nice to put a different name on the trophy this year,” said Boundary Women’s Softball President Jennifer Eaton as she called the Grand Forks Liquor Store Chicks forward to collect their first-place trophy at the close of the 2013 Boundary Women’s Softball Tournament last weekend in Beaverdell. The Liquor Store Chicks (LSC) took the final game against Rock Creek, winning at the end of five innings when the mercy rule called the game.

The backstory is that the LSC is the same team that won for the past two years. They just have a new sponsor, hence the new name. They were once sponsored by the Winnipeg Hotel and known as the Winnie Chicks, but now that the Winnipeg is no more they are sponsored by the Liquor Store and More in Grand Forks. The action started at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning with Greenwood playing Beaverdell. Eaton reported there were no major injuries through the weekend.
LSC coach Sam Ross told the Times that the Grand Forks team won all three of their round-robin games and then lost their first playoff game to Greenwood. “Which put us in the position where we couldn’t lose again or we were done. The girls came back from a game yesterday where we did not play well and the Greenwood team did. It didn’t go very well for us at all. “We were glad to have that out of the way.” LSC played three games on Sunday – playing at 9:30 and then, after
a game break, they played two backto-back games. The same team has won three years in a row. Gary Spencer was the head umpire, assisted by Jason Eaton, Terry Young, Clint Elliot and Ryan Bosovich. Scorekeepers were Darlene Rexin and Evy Uphill. Results are: League first place – Liquor Store Chicks Most Sportsman-like Team – Beaverdell Jack Popoff Trophy for Most Dedicated Helper– Shawn Waller and Tammy Shipton Best infielder – Gina Kuchen (Greenwood), Best Outfielder – Stacy Ludwar (Greenwood), Best Pitcher – Jay Walker (Rock Creek), Best Catcher – Breann Hallstrom (Greenwood), Best Batter – Geena Hanlon with a .593 average (LSC), and Tournament MVP – Jay Walker (Rock Creek). Team MVPs: Greenwood – Breann Hallstrom; Liquor Store Chicks – Jenna Holmes; Rock Creek – Sara Geen; Beaverdell – Shannon Elliot. Perpetual Trophies and Prizes: Tournament 1st place ($300 cash) – Liquor Store Chicks Tournament 2nd place ($200 cash) – Rock Creek The wind-up tournament for the Boundary Women’s Softball League was a two-day affair this year. A bunt is laid down Tournament 3rd place here by Jessie McGraw of the Liquor Store Chicks in the final game against the Rock Creek Ladies. McGraw’s jersey number 21 corresponds to the number of years she has been on the team. See page 8 for more photos. PHOTO: PAT KELLY ($100 cash) – Greenwood
