Young family loses everything in fire SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News

“Oh, my God, it’s gone.”

Lorne Stubbs’ wife Casey stood across the street from her home on Elkford Road on Tuesday afternoon as nearly a dozen firefighters trained multiple hoses on the remains of the house she and her husband were renting. There was nothing left of the home or its garage except for a smoking hull. A fifth wheel trailer was ablaze next to a large stand of trees. Two vehicles were burned beyond repair in the driveway.

Casey and Lorne’s grandmother, Karen Brown, noticed the fire while they were folding laundry in one of the bedrooms earlier in the afternoon.

“She noticed it,” Brown said of Casey.

“We could see black smoke coming... we opened the door and closed it really quickly. It was so hot.”

Firefighters from every fire department in the Alberni Valley work to knock down a blaze that leveled a house and garage, two cars and a trailer on Elkford Road, Tuesday afternoon.

Chief Tim Pley said the house was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on scene. “The challenge is it’s a hot day and there’s no firefighting water up here. They’re not on municipal water,” he said.

Elkford Road is in Cherry Creek, part of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District.

When the 911 call came in, Brick immediately asked for mutual aid from Port Alberni Fire Department. He

said Cherry Creek’s volunteer department was short on available members due to holidays and the time of day—midafternoon.

“When we got (there) we dumped all the water we had

to set the fire back because it was up in the trees,” Pley said.

Then volunteer fire departments from Cherry Creek, Beaver Creek and Sproat Lake used their tenders, or water trucks, to bring water from the nearest

hydrants near Alberni Towing at the bottom of the west side of the Hump to fill two large bladders, and water from the bladders was subsequently pumped up Elkford Road to fire trucks at the scene.

The Wildfire Management Branch sent 10 people from the Port Alberni-based Thunderbird unit as well as a three-person initial attack crew and an officer from the Coastal Fire Centre in Parksville to check for hot spots in the trees behind the burning house.

A helicopter from the Wildfire Management Branch had earlier circled the site.

Cherry Creek deputy fire chief Brian Brick said the fire seems to have started in a bedroom.

Firefighters were still busy knocking down flames late in the afternoon and Brick said there would be no more answers on the fire until at least tomorrow.

War bride fulfills dream to meet a Mountie in red serge A Port Alberni Mountie fulfilled a lifelong wish of a local senior citizen by visiting her at the Ty Watson Hospice House on June 28.

Jenny Stewart, 88, now a resident at Ty Watson House, saw her first RCMP officer dressed in his Red Serge in 1938, at the Empire Exhibition in Edinburgh, Scotland.

She was 11 years old and she remembers that moment as the one that sealed her decision to one day become a resident of Canada.

She received this opportunity in 1945 when she married a Canadian soldier in Scotland, and six months later sailed

on the ocean liner RMS Aquitania to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Stewart was one of nearly 44,000 war brides to immigrate to Canada from Europe between 1942-48.

Through the years Stewart never forgot that parade in Edinburgh.

When she mentioned to the nursing staff at the hospice that she had always wanted to meet a Mountie dressed in formal Red Serge, staff members contacted the local RCMP detachment to set up a meeting, Const. Jen Allan related in a press release.

While sipping tea at Ty Watson house, garbed in

his full red serge dress uniform, Port Alberni RCMP Const. Scott Macleod listened with great interest as Stewart talked about her late husband and their life together in their newly adopted homeland.

Photographs were taken to mark this exciting moment in Stewart’s life, and both she and Macleod smiled proudly in every photograph, Allan noted.

As Macleod left Ty Watson House hours later, he marveled once again at the impact his iconic and historical red uniform continues to have on Canadians and those around the world.

Omega Hatchery granted permission to release smolts From / A1

Omega Pacific Hatchery owner Carol Schmitt explains a fact about the hatchery tanks to city manager Ken Watson on a tour of the Great Central Lake hatchery, Monday morning.

The letter sent to Schmitt said Omega Pacific should apply for an enhancement licence if they plan to rear fish for enhancement purposes in the future, something Schmitt does plan on doing.

“We should be doing a five-year trial on a group of 50 to 75,000 a year,” Schmitt said, adding that the 65,000 being released aren’t labelled and tagged, so they won’t be tracked. “It’s not about the numbers you release these days but what actually comes back.”

On Monday, Port Alberni mayor John Douglas, city councillors Cindy Solda, Wendy Kerr, Jack McLeman, along with city manager Ken Watson toured Omega Pacific Hatchery.

Co-owner Bruce Kenny took the group by boat to the hatchery, located on Great Central Lake (the site is inaccessible by vehicle).

1987 and originally leased the 15 acres of land from the province with the intent to raise salmon, before purchasing the property several year later.

Kenny and Schmitt started raising salmon in a hatchery setting more than 30 years ago, growing small salmon for the fish-farming industry.

Omega Pacific opened in its present location in 1988.

have worked for several years to get a pilot project off the ground that would monitor their fish husbandry methods.

Fibreglass circular tanks of various sizes filled with fish are located throughout the property.

The actual hatchery and incubation room take up the main floor of Schmitt and Kenny’s spacious home; their living quarters are on the second storey.

HAFI adapts homes for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities

Brenda has always been an active woman. However, recent health issues including osteoarthritis in her left knee and losing kidney function have slowed her down. Her mobility is limited and she is now on dialysis three days a week. To adjust to her changed circumstances, Brenda sought help with her daily living activities.

Part of that help came from the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program offered through BC Housing. Launched in January 2012, the HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

Brenda applied for a new walk-in bathtub because she couldn’t safely get out of the tub on her own.

Walk-in tubs include additional safety measures such as anti-slip floors, grab bars, and a very low step in.

Home adaptations may also include handrails in halls or stairs, ramps for

Besides regular Chinook, the couple also raise trout and sturgeon for general export and albino Chinooks for the Chinese market. The hatchery employs three people full time and three part time.

According to their website, the Omega facility has the ability to incubate six-million eggs and grow 1.5 million S1 smolts a year. Fresh water comes from a well and dirty water is pumped into one of two ponds, located on the property.

“All the water is drained out through exfiltration,” Schmitt said.

“We can make use of the nitrogen from the fish to grow things like herbs and tomatoes.”

At Monday evening’s council meeting, Douglas said council will draft a letter in support of Omega Pacific Hatchery to continue salmon enhancement with the release of S1 Chinooks.

The Tseshaht First Nation is seeking information on a quad driver recorded on surveillance camera, destroying the front garden of the Nation’s office early Monday morning.

At 2:30 a.m. a person on a quad was recorded taking a sharp right turn at the rock bluff base of the garden, before riding over the ornamental shrub and plants, destroying a 16-foot silver maple tree in the process before heading back onto the highway.

For the animals.

It seems every spring and early summer there are sightings of bears in urban neighbourhoods ambling through backyards and down alleys tipping over garbage cans, pawing at bird feeders.

Posters on light standards of missing cats and small dogs often signify a coyote is on the prowl, turning docile pets into easy prey.

Recently, a deer somehow managed to wander through the busy streets of a Lower Mainland city for hours before conservation officers were finally notified.

Sadly the otherwise healthy and robust deer didn’t survive the shot from a tranquilizer gun. Ungulates like deer don’t react well to tranquilizing drugs, according to a conservation officer.

One of the great allures of living in British Columbia is the vast natural wilderness that begins right in our backyard.

It’s easy to be at a grocery store in the morning and then have a picnic in the middle of a first or second growth forest, surrounded by mountains and trees for as far as the eye can see in the afternoon.

Odds are there’s creatures amongst those trees. And sometimes they wander out of those woods and into our streets.

At first blush it may seem an infringement on our space, but we have to remember their ancestors were here long before us. We’re encroaching on territories and behaviours bred into them for thousands of years.

We need to respect their coexistence.

ICTORIA – There’s a new sheriff in town for BC Hydro, and it didn’t take long for the political range war to resume.

The new sheriff, Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett, found himself on the barricades as soon as he got the hugely complex responsibility for energy and mines. His saddlebags bulge with reports on BC Hydro’s seemingly runaway costs, along with Premier Christy Clark’s “core review” to cut $50 million a year from government operations.

NDP energy critic John Horgan highlighted the latest BC Hydro troubles in his assault on the B.C. Liberal budget. First there was a $140 million cost overrun on the Northwest Transmission Line, under construction north from Terrace to the tiny Tahltan village of Iskut and adjacent mine properties.

Then BC Hydro revealed results of an audit of its earthquake preparedness.

“Condition red” was the key message. Basically, the sprawling utility has disaster plans for each of its dams or other power facilities, but no overall way to get the provincial power grid back up after a major earthquake.

Horgan recited his list of BC Hydro sins after a decade of meddling by the BC Liberals: huge deferred debt revealed by the Auditor General, enormous liabilities for private power contracts, and more rate increases that Bennett has already admitted are on the way.

And now they can’t even keep us safe from the big one.

Bennett fired back.

About $2 billion of that debt is for seismic upgrades for the 80-yearold Ruskin Dam in Maple Ridge, and the equally

frail John Hart Dam on the Campbell River, built with wooden water pipes. Major BC Hydro works slowed down after completion of Revelstoke and Mica dams in the 1980s, and now the work is more expensive.

The Northwest Transmission Line is a partnership with Imperial Metals, which wants to power its Red Chris copper-goldsilver mine.

Bennett said the company is not only paying for the last section to Iskut and the mine site, but pitching in for the main line as well. Ottawa paid $130 million to get remote communities off decades of dependence on diesel generators.

AltaGas, owner of one of those private power projects in the region, puts in $180 million to get connected to the grid.

The line will open up more mining and hydro possibilities.

The cost overrun traces back mainly to the shortage of highskill labour such as geotechnical engineering that the remote region already faces. And this is before natural gas pipelines and LNG plants gear up.

Bennett takes over from the last sheriff, Rich Coleman, who put BC Hydro through the wringer in 2011. Coleman soon abandoned his idea of putting off the Ruskin and John Hart upgrades (again) to keep rates low through the election, and saw the B.C. Utilities Commission jack up the rate increase to seven per cent to help slow the ballooning debt.

What’s ahead for rates?

The utility is looking for 32 per cent in the next three years, says energy lawyer David Austin. He calculates that only 2.5 per cent is attributable to increased private power costs. Among other things, BC Hydro needs regional emergency centres capable of functioning after a Japan-sized quake.

Antics dangerous To the Editor,

For Alberni children, the warm, school-free days of summer are the best days of the year.

Unfortunately, those carefree weeks of freedom and sunshine can also be deadly.

I recently witnessed one of the dangerous activities carried out every year in the same location. Driving toward Port on Highway 4, I crossed the Somass River on what is nicknamed “The Orange Bridge”.

As I neared the east end of it, leading to River Road, I was startled to see a number of small

children run across in front of me, and I had to jam on the brakes to avoid hitting them.

In fact, I would have hit them if I wasn’t familiar with their antics.

The daredevil stunts of these little schoolchildren involves sitting on the rocks just upstream from the bridge, then scrambling across Highway 4 to the swimming hole below it.

Parents should supervise their kids when they hang out in such a danger zone, especially in summer.

‘Dividend’ hydro culprit From / A8

The newly updated budget tells us this annual “dividend”

is past $500 million and rising fast: $545 million this year, $611 million next year and $684 million the year after.

Re: Port authority transportation information request.

We should have all been included two years ago in the port authority transportation committee’s talks.

I am glad that the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District has taken over responsibility for this work and it deserves credit for being fully transparent.

Port authority director Darren DeLuca is now on record. The port authority does not want this so that we can all get to the airport, or a new hospital in Comox faster; he says, “For the port to grow, we have to get in another road.”

In meetings with the late Glenn Wong, the

premier “discussed coal and potential for development of 12 other mine sites being explored north of Campbell River as potential users of a new highway and the Port… [plus] how the Port can support mainland ports.”

Not that I expect 12 Raven mines to pop up all at once, but just imagine that for a second, on a two-lane highway. It would be a gong show.

And if the ministry doesn’t want to build the highway and ring road I’m sure the port still wants that traffic across its docks.

I fully support growing the port, but we have to show a bit of common sense. We need a real plan we can all support.

We deserve information To the Editor,

Recent discussions of road vs. rail in the face of the possible construction of a

gateway facility on the Alberni Canal are all valid, but they miss a couple of points, or fail to give them the focus needed.

What has come to light is that there has been a lot of discussion of public business without the public being invited to the discussion.

It is particularly disturbing that it took months for the information to come out via a Freedom of Information request, stalled on several occasions, delayed from August 2012 until June 2013.

If we subscribe to the idea that justice delayed is justice denied, we are surely, as members of the public, being shortchanged on the flow of information on which to base decisions.

Disturbing is, indeed, a term we might apply to much of what is being done in our names. In a business-to-business negotiation, it may be appropriate to

withhold information from the seat opposite. But as soon as the public good is engaged in the discussion, there is a need for those little words that get bandied about so frequently without really meaning anything: open, transparent and accountable.

It isn’t only a question of who pays (taxpayers), but also of who benefits and whether taxpayers get good value for money spent, of whether projects are worthy to begin with, and of the general direction of policy.

The obfuscation, delay and misdirection seems to happen at all levels of government, and the links between local, regional, provincial and federal governments seem to become increasingly tangled and the smokescreen increasingly universal.

Taxes are good when they serve the community, but toxic

when misdirected, and the only way to know the difference is through access to quality information— all of it, and in a timely fashion.

Container hub one bad idea To the Editor,

I can’t believe MP James Lunney supports the port authority’s wacky idea for a container transshipment hub down the Alberni Inlet.

You simply can’t tow barges on the outer West Coast in the wintertime. Also, as the waves rise, up to 15 times the energy needed to tow one tonne is required as compared to calm water.

Moreover, Nanaimo’s dock is being developed to ship and receive containers.

The local port authority is completely out of it.

City visits watershed logging operation Q & A ◆ WHILE TOURING THE WATERSHED, CITY COUNCILLORS HAD SOME QUESTIONS FOR TIMBERWEST:

A tour of TimberWest’s logging operations in the Bainbridge Lake watershed this week allowed Port Alberni city council and staff to see what’s going on near an important source of the city’s drinking water.

On Monday, a group of five city representatives, along with five from TimberWest, visited the active logging site located 2.2 km north of the lake.

TimberWest is in the middle of logging 18 hectares of forest, which will result in about 200 truckloads of logs.

TimberWest sustainability vicepresident and chief forester Domenico Iannidinardo explained that the company hires independent firms to audit its operations and has to adhere to provincially set regulations when logging in an area.

◆ WHO ARE TIMBERWEST’S BUYERS? Half are Canadian, six to seven per cent goes to the United States, and the rest goes to buyers in China, Japan and Korea.

He also said it is in the company’s best interest to log in a way that minimizes risk to the lake and allows the forest to regenerate efficiently.

“We’ve been here for 150 years,” Iannidinardo said about the company and its various incarnations, adding the logging company also has a vested interest here. “TimberWest have staff living and working in Port Alberni.”

During the tour, city engineer Guy Cicon said he sometimes wonders if perhaps there were no logging in the watershed, then the city wouldn’t need to take extra and costly precautions in keeping the drinking water safe due to the increased chances of landslides due to the logging.

“It’s a trade-off,” Cicon said. “Logging provides jobs and then society pays for water treatment. If there is no logging,

we don’t need water filtration.”

Iannidinardo disputed that thought.

“There is no science on what we are doing here, has a direct impact to the water system,” Iannidinardo said, arguing society is better off making use of the trees and that extreme weather can also create landslides into the water source.

“What forests do in this part of the world is intercept rain and snow at the rate of

melt.”

He added that when winter storms come through the area, such as the Pineapple Express from Hawaii, there is only so much a forest can intercept before turbidity in the water occurs.

ood day loyal readers. I’m seven months cancer-free, and today I feel wonderful and so alive. My next cancer-free check-up is in October with my wonderful Dr. Morrison.

Two weeks ago we received a visit by the delightful fouryear-old Audrey Rose and her fast-paced one-and-a-half-yearold brother Benjamin.

Knowing that I only had three minutes before they would be bored with the camera, I pulled out my trusty Nikon and started shooting. My setup: Nikon flash, ISO 800, RAW (not JPG), aperture f5, shutter speed 1/60, 70mm

lens, producing 20 MB files.

FYI, I am now a true blue, dyed-in-the-wool Mac Mountain Lion user (not that I wasn’t before). I sold my only Windows laptop, an HP with Windows 7 and assorted software on it, two weeks ago; therefore no more Windows for me.

Well, no more Windows until I have to teach or explain it.

As for teaching I will be a hosting a series of free, one-hour mini-info sessions starting in September at our local Port Alberni Library. Interested?

you time, place, and subject of the day. I will try to cover such topics as computer security, using Apple computers, digital cameras—buying and using, possibly MS Word, as well as Photoshop Elements.

I did try to get the library to serve some yummy French pastries along with café lattes for all that attended, but evidently it was not in the budget.

The new Ford will be built to the company’s Millennium style, with distinct West Coast flavour, like wood finishes and custom millwork.

Don Anderson from Van Isle Construction is the general contractor. Pulford said it was important

to him “and will be, going forward, to use local contractors to the best of our ability.” He said the steelwork will be done by a Vancouver Islandbased company that is working on the new Ford dealership in Duncan.

Pulford hopes to move Van Isle Ford into its new home between April 15 and May 15, 2014.

“I’m hoping for us to be in and have a grand opening on our actual anniversary, which is May 6,” he said.

Pulford also purchased the Chevrolet dealership in town from Dennis Jonsson earlier this year, and has just completed renovations. He has renamed it Pacific Chevrolet. editor@albernivalleynews.com

Newspapers are alive and well in Canada. Eight in 10 Canadians have read a newspaper in the last week in print or online. And each day, more than half of Canadians read.

If we just consider print newspapers for a moment, there are 21 per cent more print newspapers than there were in 1970. Furthermore, there were 10 new print newspapers launched in last year.

Canadians love print newspapers.

Canadians want newspapers. They also want newspaper ads. They expect newspapers to have ads. And they trust ads in newspapers, both in print and online, more than ads in other media.

Car show raises money Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

Sunglasses were needed to shade the eyes from both the sun and the chrome at Port Alberni’s 39th annual Golden Oldies Show and Shine at Williamson Park on Sunday.

About 100 freshly waxed cars were displayed in mint condition as attendees checked out the cars representing almost every decade since the 1910s. Funds generated from the event go towards bursaries for students enrolled at North Island College’s automotive program.

“When this club started, a lot of those people were 16,” Pfannenschmidt said, pointing at a group of people who are all over the age of 55.

“When we were young, we worked at the mills on weekends, doing clean-up and stuff or got a good paying summer job. It’s not the same now.”

Pfannenschmidt said the lack of jobs in Port

Alberni combined with the graduated licensing system has meant fewer teens going for their driver license after turning 16. “[We] talked to the high school mechanics teacher and he said only three of his students had a driver license,” Pfannenschmidt added.

“A lot of the cars we have here are owned by the original owners. People who bought their car when they were kids.”

Four trophies were up for grabs and awarded. Best import went to Port Alberni local Bobby Harlow and his 1966 Volkswagen camper.

Daryl Chase leads the pack early on in the 50 km Soggy Bottom XC marathon, Sunday.

Daryl Chase won the third annual Soggy Bottom XC marathon on Sunday.

Chase is also a co-organizer of this 50-kilometre bike race, which started at Porritt Place and went through Maquinna trail and Holein-the-wall. He clocked in at 2:58, snatching himself the Cloud City sponsored yellow jersey.

Aaron Smeeth came in second place at 3:00 and Brian Chase came in at 3:12. This year, 17 riders participated.

“It went really well,” Chase said, adding the hot weather forced him to jump into one of the rivers along the trail to cool down. “Everybody had a lot of fun.”

However, Chase’s biggest accomplishment may be the fact that he’s been battling diabetes again for the past couple of months.

Chase thought he had been cured of the disease for five years after 28 years of participating in the Edmonton Protocol; a procedure

Last Sunday was a great day for golf at the Alberni Golf Club, following the annual Charity Golf Classic.

In fact, it was so good Jerry White finally won the hidden hole; No. 9, winning him $212.

Low gross was scored by Cory Nielson for $50.

Low net went to Mel Trevlik, $50, and second low net went to Gerry Fagan for $30.

Glen Trask nailed the KP on No. 2, Bill Barrett on No. 4, Don McGowan on No. 13 and Preben Rasmussen on No. 17.

Cory Neilson also was closest to the pin on No. 11. So close in fact that it went in the hole for an eagle two!

Next week sees the club championship under way. You must qualify playing with a member on Saturday, July 13 or Sunday, July 14. Make your own tee times with the pro shop.

June 30 saw the Men’s Club host its skins game at the Alberni Golf Club.

Winners in the A flight taking home $28 each were Sam Parhar, Wayne Johnstone (twice), Gary Corvine, and Jim Proteau.

Winners in the B flight were Vic Carlton, Gerry Fagan, and Clint Wilson, each winning $46.

Alfred S. Buckle August 9, 1932 – May 19, 2013

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by sons Fred Jr., Ken (Debbie), nephew Rick (Sharon) and best friend Chris. He is survived by grandsons Raymond, Clayton and granddaughter Stacey. Fred Sr. was predeceased by his sons John, Russell, David and daughter Karen.

When Fred Sr. was in his early 20’s he served his country overseas in the Korean War aboard the HMS Nootka. After returning home he became a truck driver for 38 years. Fred Sr. had many passions, including boxing, music and watching John Wayne Classics with his good friend Chris. When Fred Sr. wasn’t playing at family functions he was organizing or playing jam sessions at the local bars. You could also find him at the flea market playing guitar and sharing his love for music. Fred Sr. inspired many musicians throughout the Coombs and Parksville area.

Sons Fred Jr. and Ken gratefully acknowledge the compassionate care provided by the Qualicum Beach Hospice and homecare support.

The Parksville Legion has graciously offered their hall at 146 Hirst Ave., for a celebration of life on August 4, 2013 from 12-4 pm.

All are invited to attend.

A new cell tower erected on Maple Way has drawn some attention.

The 37-metre (121foot) tower is owned

by Telus and was installed in June to ultimately provide better cellphone coverage in the Alberni Valley, says the contractor hired to install it.

Lloyd Smith of WesTower Communications said the double unit houses two different services: the top is UMTS, running from 800-1900 Mhz. The bottom unit is for new LTE service.

“It’s just higher frequency, a better technology,” he said as he supervised a work crew running a ground cable through the centre of the tower.

The tower is designed to accept a third unit, which would be for 7G service, but Smith said that won’t be installed yet. editor@albernivalleynews.com
