Guides face tough call
A lack of leaders could mean the Girl Guides group for Grades 4 to 6 has to be cancelled this September SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff
Girls in Grades 4, 5 and 6 might not get the chance to take part in Girl Guides in Cranbrook this fall. “Some sad news: we may have to cancel our Guides unit Grades 4 to 6. There will be some sad girls out there, but we do not have any leaders yet for this coming year,” said Tara Archambault, District Commissioner. Previous leaders have moved on to other ventures, Archambault said, leaving that age bracket without enough leaders to carry on. Only one casual leader remains. “We would like at least two more leaders,” she said. Leaders attend a two-hour meeting, once a week from September through to June. “Planning for that meeting takes a couple of hours at least a week,” she said. In addition, they would attend a monthly meeting and any camp trips that have been planned, as well as helping with a few fundraising ventures throughout the year. Formal training is available, but leaders can also learn from mentors to start the process. It’s a popular age bracket that is facing being shut down, Archambault went on. “There will be about 24 girls registered this year that would miss out,” she said. “Guides do games, crafts, field trips, camping trips, unit work, and have guest speakers. It’s all focused on girl power through friendship and knowledge of self.” Anyone interested in finding out more about leadership with the Cranbrook Girl Guides can email Archambault at guider. tara@gmail.com.

Earlier this year Cranbrook’s Cheryl King took part in a five-day program with renowned “dog whisperer” Cesar Millan — Training Cesar’s Way — in Santa Clarita, California. King came away with a repertoire of dog training secrets and techniques. See more on Page 4. Man’s body retrieved from river Jaffray’s Zeke Fantuz confirmed deceased after his vehicle went into the Bull River on June 24 SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff
On Saturday, July 6, the body of missing Jaffray man Ezekiel “Zeke” Fantuz was pulled out of the Bull River east of Cranbrook by Search and Rescue personnel, according to Cranbrook RCMP. The young man was last seen at about 11:15 p.m. on Monday,
June 24 after he left friends to return home. When he failed to arrive, a search began and revealed a spot where RCMP believed Zeke’s 1994 Nissan Pathfinder had gone off the Bull River Forest Service Road into the Bull River, above the bridge past the Aberfeldie Dam. In the evening on Friday, July
5, according to Cranbrook RCMP, a family member located Zeke’s vehicle in the river, a short distance downstream of where it went in. RCMP were notified, and Search and Rescue teams attended the scene Friday night. Search and Rescue managed to attach a line to the vehicle, preventing it from moving further
downstream. At first light on Saturday, July 6, Cranbrook RCMP with Search and Rescue units from Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie and Sparwood, including a swift water and rope rescue team, began the work of retrieving the vehicle.
