n behalf of Softball Canada, I would like to extend our thanks to the organizers and supporters of the 2013 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship.

This event is important to the game on so many levels. First to all the players, through all the divisions, it is a chance to measure yourself against the best at your level of competition in a fun, professionally organized tournament.

Lifetime memories are made here. For the coaches, officials, volunteers and supporters, we sincerely appreciate your efforts on behalf of our sport. You are all making a difference.

This year, the tournament will play an integral role in the final preparation for our Senior National Team, which will be attending the World Championship qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico next month. The 2014 Worlds will be held in Holland. Our players are excited to compete against other top teams from around the world here at home in Softball City and we appreciate their support of the event. It is a very important tournament on the World calendar.

We also value the learning opportunities this tournament provides for the many young players, who may one day compete on one of our National teams. These club teams play a significant role in the development of our sport and we are glad to see such strong levels of participation from teams from across Canada and around the World.

In late October, we will be putting forward a bid for this organizing group to host the 2016 ISF Women’s World Championships. With such a strong, committed group of volunteers, support from all levels of government and a vibrant softball community we have a very strong bid and look forward to presenting it to the delegates of the International Softball Federation.

n Wednesday, July 17th, fans, athletes, teams, coaches, umpires and volunteers are in for a treat as we gather to celebrate softball and everything it means to us.

International and local teams will be on hand to take part in the festivities and showcase why softball is one of the world’s favourite sports.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m., the Parade of Athletes will take place on the Championship Diamond at Softball City, showcasing the 87 teams participating in this year’s tournament in a colourful celebration.

Then, stick around Diamond 1 as Team Canada takes on last year’s bronze medal winner Team Australia at 7:00 p.m.

The world's best come to town

T

he 2013 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship features an incredible lineup of teams from around the world playing in the Women's International Championship division, including the world's top-fourranked teams.

Team Canada Ranked number four in the world based on the 2012 ISF Women’s World Championship standings, Team Canada will be fighting hard for a win in front of their home crowd at this year’s Scotiabank Canadian Open. Last year, the team beat out Puerto Rico to make it into the playoffs, where they fought some strong battles against the top teams in the world and placed fourth overall in the tournament.

Team Japan Currently ranked number one in the world based on their performance at the 2012 ISF Women’s World Championships, Team Japan is back and ready to defend their

championship title at the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship. Team Japan has won this tournament two years in a row, last year having beat Team USA 9-6 in 8 innings to take the gold-medal game.

Team USA This year’s Team USA is ready to take on the challenge to earn the top spot at the 2013 Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship.

Last year they finished with a silver medal in a dramatic 8-inning matchup with Team Japan, and are currently ranked number two in the world standings.

Team Australia

The bronze-medal winners at the 2012 Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship are currently ranked third in the world softball standings. Last year, they beat out Team Canada in the bronze medal game and will be looking to improve upon that position this year.

China-Nanjing

Team Venezuela placed fifth at last year’s Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship, winning over team New Zealand in their final game. The only South American team at this year’s tournament is back and ready to once again represent their country in Canada.

Returning to Softball City after an absence at the 2012 tournament, China-Nanjing will be bringing their A-game to the diamond, looking to earn a place in the finals. In 2011 they made it to the playoffs where they finished in the top 3 in the Women’s Elite pool, allowing them to move into the Women’s International Division.

Team Canada Players to Watch Kelsey Haberl (Burnaby, B.C.) In 2012, Haberl finished off a successful senior season at SFU setting very strong offensive numbers and leading the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in batting average (.465) on base percentage (.496) and walks (38).

She also finished with an impressive fielding percentage of .995 and was named GNAC player of the year.

The recent SFU Clan graduate is a former member of the Surrey Storm and a graduate of Burnaby Mountain Secondary.

The first baseman competed with Team Canada at the 2012 World Cup, 2012 ISF Women’s World Championships and the 2012 Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship.

Jenna Caira (Toronto, Ont.) At Syracuse University, Caira became the all-time program leader in nearly every category: wins (97), appearances (167), games started (141), complete games (82), shutouts (28), innings pitched (887.0), strikeouts (1,043), strikeouts per seven innings (8.23), most saves (7), lowest ERA (1.87) and lowest opponent batting average (.190).

The team captain in her 2012 senior year became the only player in Big East history with 1,000 career strikeouts and was twicenamed National Pitcher of the Week.

Team Canada Players to Watch Joey Lye (Toronto, Ont.) Lye is currently in her second year as head softball coach at Stevenson University, where she led the Mustangs to the semifinals of the CAC Softball Championship.

A 2009 graduate of Williams with a BA in psychology, Lye was a four-year letter winner in both softball and women's ice hockey where she was named to the NESCAC’s AllSportsmanship Team in both sports.

In softball, Lye was a four-time AllNESCAC and NFCA New England Region First Team selection as shortstop. She set five all-time school records in batting average (.457), runs scored (150), hits (211), total bases (267) and stolen bases (62). She also ranks third in games played with 148. As a senior, Lye led the nation with a .563 batting average, setting a new Williams single-season record.

Jennifer Gilbert (Saskatoon, Sask.)

Gilbert was recently named to the NFCA Division 1 All-America Third Team, becoming the first player in Ball State University’s program history to earn AllAmerica honours.

At the end of her junior year in 2013, the outfielder was No.1 in batting average, runs, RBIs, hits and on-base percentage.

This year, she is back playing for the senior Canadian Women’s National Team for the second year.

She was formerly a member of the Canadian Junior Women’s National Team and the Canadian Women’s U16 National Team.

Team Canada Players to Watch Victoria Hayward (Toronto, Ont.) This University of Washington junior outfielder was named to First-Team AllPacific Region in 2013 and the College Sports Madness All-Pac-12 First-Team.

She led the Washington Huskies in batting average, hits and triples this season.

As a sophomore, she led the All-Pac-12 Second-Team in runs scored (49) and sacrifice hits (5) and played in all 58 games.

Hayward joined Team Canada in 2009 and at that point was the youngest player ever named to the Senior Women’s National Team.

Megan Timpf (Port Dover, Ont.) Megan Timpf has been a member of the Canadian National Team since 2005 and has been a member of the coaching staff at Barry University for two years.

Timpf was formerly an all-star shortstop at California University of Pennsylvania and a member of the Canadian Olympic team, representing Canada at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.

Timpf played with Team Canada in 2012, competing at the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship, the World Cup and the ISF World Championships.

Timpf joined the Canadian National Team in 2005 and was a member of its gold medal-winning squad at the 2007 World University Games.

irls and boys ages eight to 16 will have the opportunity to be on the field and learn from some of the best female softball players around.

Youth are invited to take part in the Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship Softball Clinics and spend time with the world’s most accomplished and experienced players.

These clinics provide young athletes with the opportunity to learn skills and strategies, and to hear top players’ personal stories of the perseverance, dedication and commitment it has taken them to reach their goals.
