RCMP still seeking missing man Submitted

Cranbrook RCMP; Search and Rescue; family and friends continue to search for a 20 year old Jaffray man who is believed to have driven off the Bull River Forest Service Road on Monday, June 24th and was last seen at 11:15 pm that same night. Search efforts have been scaled back due to high water levels in the Bull River and increased turbidity, which continues to hamper everyone’s efforts to locate the vehicle and driver. The police investigation and search efforts have confirmed a location where a vehicle left the Bull River Forest Service Road and is presumed to have entered

the Bull River. Items recovered at the scene and from locations down river have been confirmed by family as belonging to 20 year old Ezekiel ‘Zeke’ FANTUZ of Jaffray. The police and family have a high degree of certainty that the missing vehicle is located in the Bull River at the location where it went off the road however the driver, Zeke FANTUZ has not been located and is presumed to be deceased. The RCMP are requesting the assistance of all users on the Bull River and Kootenay River such as kayakers; rafters; boaters; fishermen; etc, to be aware of this investigation and to be on the lookout for any items associated to this case and

to report the finding of them to their local police detachment. The Cranbrook RCMP would like to thank all the people who have, and are continuing to assist in this case. The family of Zeke FANTUZ requested that any media inquiries be directed to the RCMP for reply. In addition the family also wanted the public to know that they will be holding memorial service for Zeke on Saturday, July 6th 2013 at 10:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Jaffray with a reception to follow at the Jaffray community hall. If anyone has any additional information about this incident they can call the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-4893471 or East Kootenay Crimestoppers (1-800222-TIPS)

prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety. The prohibition will remain in place until Sept. 20 or until the public is otherwise notified. Specifically, prohibited activities include: * the burning of any waste, slash or other materials. * stubble or grass fires of any size over any area. * the use of fireworks, sky lanterns, or burning barrels of any size or description. The prohibition does not restrict campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller, and does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes. Campfires must not

be larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres in size. Anyone lighting a campfire must maintain a fireguard by removing flammable debris from around the campfire area and must have a hand tool or at least eight litres of water available nearby to properly extinguish the fire. Make sure that that the campfire is fully extinguished and the ashes are cold to the touch before leaving the area for any length of time. This prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown and private lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of local governments that have forest fire prevention bylaws and are serviced by a fire department. with civic authorities for any restrictions before lighting a fire. Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345 or, if convicted in court, be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. Flooding situation update Submitted

The Regional District of East Kootenay has issued an update of the emergency flooding situation in the area. Columbia Valley: The Evacuation Alert that has been in place (issued on June 22) for the HooDoo Resort Campground and a few neighbouring properties has been lifted. In addition, the State of Local Emergency that had been declared for that same area will expire at Midnight tonight and will not be extended. We are continuing to do debris management on Fairmont Creek and Cold Spring Creek, so the Declaration of a State of Local Emergency remains in place for that area as we expect the work will take at least another week or two. Having the Declaration in place allows us to complete the work / debris removal and secure any additional required resources. We are continuing to monitor all three water-

ways. Wasa: The water levels continue their slow decline at Wasa, at about 1” every 24 hours. We removed the automatic sandbaggers and a pallet of empty sandbags from the Community Hall parking lot today; however, we have 4000 filled bags stacked and ready in the event they are required. The “No Boating” request on Wasa has been lifted and we have posted a voluntary “NO WAKE” zone on the south end of the Lake in

the following area: • East Side: 200 meters north of the Cedar Road boat launch. • West Side: North end of Larch Road where it meets Wasa Lake Park. 250 meters north of Lodgepole Road. As the water is still high at Cedar Road, we are requesting people not use the Cedar Road launch and choose an alternate launch at this time.

ICE choose two new players in CHL draft Submitted Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club announced today the Club has selected 18-year-old Russian Defenseman Rinat Valiev (1st round, 25th overall) and 18-year-

old Finland Forward Artturi Lehkonen (2nd round, 85th overall) in today’s 22nd annual CHL import Draft. “Our number one priority today was to select a defenseman that could step into our lineup immediately and contribute to our team. Rinat

was a player that was ranked by a number of NHL teams for this past weekend’s NHL Draft and even though he was not selected every NHL team we spoke to felt his game was suited for the CHL. He played last year in the USHL so he is accustomed to the North American culture as well as speaking and understanding the English language which is huge from our end,” continued Chynoweth.

“The selection of Artturi Lehkonen was a complete flyer on our end. He is a world class player (2nd round selection, 55th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2013 NHL Draft) who plays professionally in Finland. We had some other forwards on our list who were selected just before our pick so we decided to take a chance on Artturi,” added Chynoweth

The RDEK paid tribute to Electoral Area F Volunteer of the Year Norbert Schab at the Electoral Area F Town Hall meeting recently in Fairmont. “Norbert has been a member of the Wasa Lions club for 51 years and has given hundreds of hours of time to this community,” says Electoral Area F Director Wendy Booth. “He played a key role in the new “Lions Den Project,” has been on the Fairmont Community Association, is Presi-

dent of the Trails Society and Summit Trail Maker Society, sits on the Area F Advisory Planning Commission, and so much more. He also gives in many quiet ways – shoveling for his neighbours, mowing lawns, and even updating the messages on the sign in Fairmont. There really isn’t a part of this community his volunteerism hasn’t touched.” There were 50 people in attendance at the meeting, which also featured an update from Director Booth on the

projects and services she and the Board have been working on, along with presentations from the RDEK on the current emergency response and Financial Plan. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Mainroads were in attendance and provided an update on their plans for culvert replacement and ditching in Fairmont this year, the first in what is a three-year plan.

Home Improvement and Renovations Construction questions: Is it possible to build a Lego house? by Menno Dueck

Are you ready to step up and publicly admit that you not only played with Lego as

a kid, but still dream about building a real Lego house? Rafi had that dream and he decided to see it through. He had

many discussions with his builder about using ICF (insulating concrete forms) instead of traditional building practices of pouring

a concrete basement, stick framing the structure and insulating with bat insulation. ICF are interlocking modular units that are dry-stacked and then filled with concrete (rebar reinforcement added as you stack), locking together like Lego bricks and forming the structural walls of a building. The step of insulating the walls is gone as the products the modular units are made of provide the insulating factor. With all the ceiling pot lights in his house, a source of significant heat loss, Rafi agreed with his contractor to use foam spray insulation in the attic.

An avid reader and researcher, Rafi was well aware of the energy efficiency and consequent energy savings of ICF construction over traditional. He also knew the neighbourhood would be real happy with the sound absorption; Rafi and the Rascals would soon have the perfect studio for their all-night FriEK PROOF 2012/13 day jam sessions (he was the drummer).
