You’ve probably got a jar of them sitting on your bedside table. They take up space in your vehicle’s cupholder, and really don’t have much in the way of purchasing power.

You probably wouldn’t bother to bend over and pick one up on the sidewalk, and in fact, the federal government actually loses money making them. And, so, effective February 4th of this year, the Royal Canadian Mint has eliminated the penny. Will we miss it? That remains to be seen, but I’m sure we’ll survive without it. The elimination of the penny has, however, created a new opportunity for Rotary to help eliminate something else: polio.

Rotary International has, for twenty five years, made polio eradication one of our primary goals. The disease is now found in just three countries - Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan - and now, we’re on the cusp of truly eradicating it. In the 1980s, there were 350,000 cases per year. So far in 2013, there have been less than 30 cases worldwide. Last September, Rotary gained the support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with the “Pennies and More For Polio” initiative. Both pledged support at a ratio of $1 for every $1 raised by Rotarians in Canada. This meant that every $1 raised by the Rotary Foundation for polio attracted an additional $2 through March 1 of this year.

Dimpy Sanghera contracted Poliio when she was 5 or 6 months old.

When were you first diagnosed?

“I was pretty young then,” she says. “I don’t really have a memory of it. What my mother tells me is that I had been suffering from a high fever, and she took me to the doctor, who told her that I had caught the polio virus,” Dimpy explains. “The next day, when she picked me up, my right leg was hanging like a noodle. My mom had to quit her job to look after me, and took me to many doctors and specialists.”

Living with Polio Although Canada is now certified polio-free, there are people whose lives are still shaped by the disease, including at least one person right here in our community.

Dimpy Sanghera, the smiling face behind the desk at City Furniture - and daughter of Revelstoke Rotarian Jag Sanghera - contracted polio when she was just 5 or 6 months old. Despite the fact that Dimpy is expecting her first child with husband Bob within the next week, she still had time to talk with me about her experience with polio.

In February, our club entered into a friendly challenge against the Nakusp Rotary Club, to capitalize on this leverage, and shake down members for small change wherever possible. Whichever club won the challenge had bragging rights, and the honor of presenting the grand total from both clubs to Polio Plus. Cheating was acceptable and encouraged, as was larger change; in the end, Nakusp came out on top thanks to generous donations. The two clubs reached a combined total of $800, which, of course, attracted matching contributions from CIDA and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Dimpy goes on to explain that when a person is infected by polio, the disease enters the central nervous system, preferentially infecting and destroying motor neurons, and leading to muscle weakness. “There is no treatment for Polio once the person is affected by it,” explains Dimpy. “In my case, it was my right leg.”

How has polio affected your life?

“It has pretty much shaped my whole life. I didn’t really start walking until I was about 3 years old.” Even as an adult, Dimpy says, “I have feeling in my right leg, but no strength. Most of my body weight is supported by my left leg.”

But that didn’t hold her back. “When I was a really young kid I wanted to do everything that all the other kids did.

I was a very headstrong kid, so it didn’t really stop me from doing anything I ever wanted to do. To this day I do the same.” Dimpy was envious of other kids who could ride a bicycle; when she was about 13 years old, she taught herself how ride one.

Has Rotary helped?

“Growing up,” Dimpy explains, “I had known quite a few people that were also affected by Polio. It was not that uncommon.” There were no support groups while she was growing up in India. Although in her childhood years she didn’t know much about Polio, she became more interested and aware of it as an adult. When the Sanghera family moved to Revelstoke in 2002, Dimpy’s father Jag joined Rotary. “You guys are doing a fantastic job at supporting Polio and all the other charity work in Revelstoke,” Dimpy says. “We are so proud to be members of this group.”

Health regulations close DOKK Park wading pool Aaron Orlando

A summer rite of passage for young Revelstoke children and their caregivers is closing, maybe temporarily, maybe for good.

The wading pool in DOKK Park was closed as of June 25 due to changes in health regulations. An Interior Health inspection found the pool doesn’t meet new provincial pool regulations adopted in late 2012. (The park is located across from Okanagan College and also known as Farwell Park).

In a proposed workaround to meet the new requirements, the city would have to drain the pool nightly and refill it daily, at an estimated cost of roughly $10,000 for the summer season. The new regulations categorize wading pools as the equivalent to swimming pools in their operational requirements.

At Revelstoke City Council’s June 25 meeting, city parks director Laurie Donato said the expense and waste of 60 cubic metres of water daily is just too much. The pool would draw about one per cent of Revelstoke’s daily water usage, and amount to two per cent of the daily flow into the city’s wastewater treatment plant.

DOKK Park (pronounced dokey) is named after the caretaker organization Dramatic Order of the Knights of Khorrasan, who maintain the pool for the city on a volunteer basis.

At the June 25 meeting, council-

lors heard the wading pool had likely contravened public health regulations for some time, but had just been flying under the health authority’s radar until the recent inspection.

Council voted for the immediate closure, and also endorsed a staff investigation of a possible new treatment system that could keep the wading pool open. Rules require the equivalent of the entire volume of the pool be filtered every two hours; the existing pool treatment system can’t handle that.

However, city staff told council that wading pools are going extinct across the province due to the cost of meeting health regulations.

Splash parks or spray parks are usurping wading pools as the summer cool-down option of preference for municipalities. “There will be some discussion going forward to see what we can do,” said Coun. Gary Starling.

The Dramatic Order of the Knights of Khorrasan is an internal chapter of the fraternal organization The Order of the Knights of Pythias, who operate from their hall next to the RCMP station in Revelstoke.

“We’re very sad about it. That has been the project of the DOKK for year,” said Kevin Coulter, the past Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias. “I was born and raised here.

I can remember that pool being the wading pool here for years.

“It’s sad because its the kids that suffer.”

The wading pool in DOKK Park (also known as Farwell Park) is now closed due to changes in health regulations. City staff are investigating options, but it may never open again.

Revelstoke radio listeners choose CBC Kelowna over Kamloops Aaron Orlando

Revelstoke listeners have chosen CBC Kelowna over CBC Kamloops.

In a CBC online poll asking which morning show Revelstoke residents want to receive, 68 per cent of the 449 respondents preferred Kelowna over Kamloops.

The result means the CBC will now ask the Canadian Radio Tele-

vision Telecommunications Commission to allow the national broadcaster to switch Revelstoke back to the Kelowna feed. "I spoke to [Mayor David Raven] yesterday," said Johnny Michel, senior managing director for CBC radio in B.C. and Alberta. "The community spoke very loud and clear."

The vote came in response to a petition from Revelstoke residents. The petitioners asked Revelstoke City Council to lobby for

a change back to Kelowna after the Revelstoke listening area was switched to the new CBC Kamloops bureau's radio programming in the fall of 2012.

The CBC will now inform the CRTC they want to make the change. That could take anywhere from six weeks to six months, according to Michel. "It probably would be on the shorter end of the timeline," he said, adding the CBC will file the paperwork soon.

"They may make a decision fairly quickly."

He said the vote wasn't a reflection of the Kamloops programming; Revelstoke listeners simply feel more connected to the Kelowna broadcast area.

"The mayor in Revelstoke asked me to thank the team in Kamloops becase he thought they were doing a very good job," Michel said.

He said the vote showed a healthy interest in CBC. "This was

a very unique situation for us. We are happy we were able to conduct a very open and transparent process," he said. "I think it's perfect that people are havig a conversation about what CBC programming they prefer."

So, how about a CBC Kootenays? Michel said the broadcaster has no plans to open another bureau as part of the local programming initiative that created CBC Kamloops.

School board silent on teachers’ request for bargaining support Alex Cooper

The Revelstoke Board of Education was silent on a request by the Revelstoke Teachers’ Association to support them in their bargaining with the province.

“I’m asking for a letter of support to ask the government to reconsider, or not consider the 10 year deal,” Jennifer Wolney, the president of the RTA, asked the Board of Education at its meeting last week.

Premier Christy Clark has said in the past she is seeking a 10-year contract with the B.C. Teachers Federation in order to provide stability in the public school system. The BCTF has rejected that proposal.

The BCTF held a province-wide vote last week where 96 per cent of its members voted against government interference in the bargaining process.

The province-wide vote followed last Monday’s announcement by Education Minister Peter Fassbender that he has asked for a “pause” in bargaining, to appoint a direct government negotiator for province-wide issues with a goal of reaching a 10-year deal. The current two-year agreement expired June 30; negotiations for the BCTF and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA), representing school districts, have been ongoing since February. “We are not walking away from the table, we are walking toward it,” Fassbender said. “The work that has been done to date will not be lost. In fact, we want to build on it.”

In a letter to the Revelstoke Board of Education, Wolney asked the Board to write a letter of support rejecting Premier Clark’s proposal. “Urge the government to deal respectfully with teachers and bring

resources to the bargaining table that will result in improved learning conditions for students, a fair deal for teachers and eliminate turmoil, acrimony and cuts to the public education system,” she wrote.

The letter was written before the events of last week, but Wolney said the principal still stood. “The system is constantly being eroded by people being underfunded, by people being undermined,” she said.

“That’s not just happening to the teachers, but its happening to BCPSEA as well.”

Alan Chell, the chair of the Board of Education and of BCPSEA, was not at the meeting. Acting chair Mauro Morrone thanked Wolney for the letter, but no motion was introduced to support the teachers’ position.

“We’ll take your information as presented and we’ll move on to superintendent Mike Hooker’s report,” he said.

Superintendent: School district doing well, but work needed in some areas For the first time in years, the Revelstoke School District did not meet its lofty 90-per-cent target for student literacy at the end of grade three.

According to a report by superintendent Mike Hooker, 83 per cent of grade three students were reading at grade level – the first time in years where the goal of 90 per cent was not met.

“This represents four students that dropped us below our target,” he told the Board of Education at its meeting last week. “That’s a small cohort group and our principals and learning support teachers will make sure they get that grade four support.”

The Achievement Contract is an annual report that looks at three overarching goals for the school district. They are in literacy, high school graduation and student health and well-being.

The school district also didn’t meet its literacy target for grade one – with only 53 per cent of 86 students reading at or above grade level. Hooker said the district will look to provide extra support to those students.

For most other grades, targets were met or exceeded, or were very close to being met.

Graduation rates remain high. While the actual statistics were not available, there were only three students who were removed from the Times Review graduation photo spread on pages B6–7 of this issue.

Transition rates between grades in high school were also high. Course failure rates are at or below three per cent, said Hooker.

The district’s newest goal on health and wellbeing was introduced last year.

“The last bit of our work to do now is start addressing the needs of vulnerable students who are experiencing less success than they should for things that are out of our control in a typical classroom environment, and that’s to do with social-emotional learning,” said Hooker. “There is a lot that can be done in that way, and we have begun some of that work. That has become more of a focus of the district, that we are attending to their social and emotional well being.”

So far, the data is mixed. Only about one-quarter of grade seven and grade 10 students said they are learning how to stay healthy. On the positive side, around 80 per cent of students in grades four, seven, 10 and 12 reported being connected to two or more adults at school. The majority said four or more adults “care about me.”

“It truly speaks to the relationships in our schools between kids and families and their teachers,” said Hooker. “It really puts us in a good position to deal with social and emotional well being because in an important key is to have someone you connect to.”

In brief: Highway Jumbotrons get red light Times Review staff

Revelstoke City Council has nixed the highway Jumbotrons plan.

At their June 25 meeting, city council decided not to go forward with the idea of installing two large electronic Jumbotron-style signs on the Trans-Canada Highway to the east and west of Revelstoke.

The concept to install the $50,000 apiece signs was proposed by the city's economic development department and the city's enhancement committee.

The idea was to help attract motorists to town.

It didn't get a seconder at the council table on June 25, meaning the idea wasn't discussed and didn't proceed to a vote.

This means, as far as city funding for the project goes, it's off the table for now. That doesn't mean another party couldn't pursue the idea.

How would Revelstoke respond to a flood? Simon Hunt explains Revelstoke’s Emergency Plan Coordinator talks about the lead-up to last months rains and what Revelstoke would do in a flood situation Alex Cooper

Two weeks ago, a week before the rains that left much of southern Alberta and parts of southeastern British Columbia flooded, Simon Hunt took part in a conference call warning that a major weather system was approaching Revelstoke.

"I was contacted by Emergency Management British Columbia and they had been informed by Environment Canada that a large upper low pressure system that was situated off the coast of Oregon – they were forecasting with high confidence that it was going to head inland across the 49th parallel," Hunt told me. "At first they were forecasting over 100 millimetres. It could have been more – 100 to 140 millimetres."

More conference calls were held as the system approached.

Eventually it was realized the system was tracking south and Revelstoke would be spared the worst of the rain. Still, when it did arrive on Wednesday, June 26, it brought with it about 50 millimetres of rain to the area.

Still, in the week between the first reports and the arrival of the storm, Hunt, who is the Emergency Plan Coordinator for Revelstoke

and Area B, started contacting people to prepare. He notified the City of Revelstoke so the department of public works would know to check on the creeks around the city and make sure there were no issues with the dykes around the city.

"The River Forecast Centre was predicting that small creeks were going to be most affected, just like what happened last June when the Trans-Canada got closed between here and Sicamous," Hunt said.

"Our large tributaries weren't going to be significantly impacted. The fact we have BC Hydro and our rivers are regulated means we have amazing capacity to manage water and prevent flooding." *** Prior to the construction of the dams, Revelstoke used to experience periodic flooding. A 2008 report on the Big Eddy dykes shed light on some past floods. In 1894, the Columbia River reached an elevation of about 441 metres, flooding parts of the city and large areas of farmland in the area. A 1948 flood reached a similar level, and a 1961 flood was just a bit lower.

In 1948, water flowed across large sections of the Big Eddy but by 1961, several dykes had been built, preventing a repeat of the previous experience – though several

basements were flooded. Pumping stations were installed to prevent groundwater from rising above 438.4 metres.

The B.C. government produces floodplain maps based on the area that can be expected to flood once every 200 years. For Revelstoke, the biggest floods are expected to reach an elevation of 442.25 metres – above the highest levels experienced in 1894. Without any protection in place, large sections of Southside and the Big Eddy would be flooded, but a system of dykes and pumps are in place to prevent that from happening; the Greenbelt pathway and Big Eddy pathway are both built on the dykes.

Revelstoke also benefits from water control by BC Hydro on the Columbia River and, as Hunt put it, the Illecillewaet River is capable of channelling a lot of water. Last week I went whitewater rafting with Apex Rafting and our guide said the water flow was at about 200 cubic-metres per second – about half the peak level it reached last June.

"From a flood point of view we're really well situated. We're used to seeing lots of rain," said Hunt. "We have an excellent system of dykes and pumps. Our major river, the Columbia, is regulated

and that's humungous. That's why (last year) everywhere flooded but us, because they were able to manage our water so well." *** So, what would happen if there was a flood? Like in any emergency situation, an Emergency Operations Centre would be set up at the airport; the centre can be made mobile if necessary.

Hunt showed up at my office with a big binder that contained the Revelstoke and Area Emergency Response Management Plan. He said there are copies spread throughout the city, though I couldn't find it online. The plan details what would be done in case of an emergency. The actual response would depend on the situation on the ground.

Hunt would co-ordinate with various agencies, including BC Hydro, Parks Canada, the Ministry of Transportation, the City of Revelstoke, and the Columbia Shuswap Regional District. He would speak to a hydrologist to get an idea of what would happen to the rivers and creeks in the area. If necessary, an evacuation centre would be set up by Emergency Social Services either at the community or one of the schools in case people need to be evacuated from their homes.

The fire department, BC Ambulance and the RCMP would be called on to provide emergency response. If necessary, Search and Rescue would provide extra support. Heavy machinery would be deployed to help manage any flooding.

"We look at emergency management as a web where the incident is in the middle and you have lots of strands going out," said Hunt. "Even if you lose a couple of strands, you have a strong network."

He said the situation leading up to the rains last week was a good experience because it allowed him to get in touch with many of the agencies that would be involved in a response. He is interested in meeting with anyone who can provide information on any emergency scenario.

"This was a really good experience for me. I've only been doing this job for six months," he said.

"The most important part of emergency management is knowing your team, so this gave me the opportunity to bring the team together."

Council agrees to look into watershed protection issue Aaron Orlando

At their June 25 meeting, Revelstoke City Council agreed to look into the issue of a possibly missing tenure status for local watersheds.

In a letter to city council, the B.C. Tap Water Alliance, an advocacy group that monitors and strives to protect community water sources in the province, claims Revelstoke’s Greeley Creek watershed and the Dolan Creek watershed that serves as a backup source for the Big Eddy have both lost their protected tenure status.

In the letter, BCTWA coordinator Will Koop said the alliance reviewed a provincial list of watershed reserves in May of this year and found that both the Greeley and Dolan watersheds weren’t included. He expressed concern

about negative impacts to local watersheds, such as development activity encroaching on the community water source. He gave the Revelstoke Adventure Park application as an example, although it is still unclear if the proposal is within the tenure; it's not within a recent watershed study area.

"I think the first thing we have to do is some homework to find out exactly where that tenure sits, if at all," Raven said at the June 25 meeting in response to questions from the Times Review. "It may well be that the tenure is still in place and we're not aware of it and he's not aware of it. If it's not, we will endeavour to deal with the agencies to replace that tenure."

The mayor noted the letter came from a private group, not a government agency.

"There's nothing that we've done

that would allow it to go," Raven said. He also doubted that previous councils would have actively been involved in removing the tenure. "It would not have been removed by the city. If anything it would have been an administrative slippage [or] oversight."

What about harvesting within the watershed tenure area that has occurred? Would it have been permitted? "Possibly," Raven said, adding some logging is permitted within watersheds.

Following the publication of the initial story, Revelstoke Adventure Park proponent Jason Roe said the City of Revelstoke hasn't been in touch with him about the issue and the watershed tenure.

"We had the province look a the mapping … to make sure we were not in the watershed," Roe explained, saying the none of the

proposed adventure park is within the existing watershed boundaries as they've been presented to him.

"You whisper watershed and immediately it becomes a hot button issue," Roe said. "I don't want to be involved in anything that destroys a community watershed."

Since the RAP project was first announced earlier this year, the process emerging from the City of Revelstoke has sent mixed messages.

First, a report from the city's planning department flagged numerous issues, such as vicinity to the watershed, or the inadequate existing bridge crossing of the Illecillewaet River to the proposed park. The report noted possible city boundary expansion into the area.

Put into context, the planning report was a due-diligence list of all potential issues the city may face.

Council meeting, however, the Times Review asked if boundary expansion into the area was still on the City's agenda.

The answer at that point from Mayor David Raven was "no."

Boundary expansion into the Greeley area wasn't being considered, the mayor said. Raven said boundary expansion brought costs and liabilities that the city wasn't prepared to take on.

Just weeks later, however, the June 3 correspondence to the Columbia–Shuswap Regional District – a referral response letter – requested matching funding for a study of City of Revelstoke boundary expansion into the area.

What's clear is the watershed issue, watershed boundaries and process surrounding the Revelstoke Adventure Park application is unclear and unfolding at this point.

VICTORIA – Government revenues have fallen $900 million short of February's budget projections, and teachers and other government workers can expect no new money for wages, Finance Minister Mike de Jong said Thursday.

Bright spots for the B.C. economy include an expected recovery in natural gas prices from historic lows, and $500 million in savings on government operations, de Jong said in a post-election budget update.

B.C. is continuing an effective freeze on public sector wage growth that began in 2010. Since the government's "cooperative gains" mandate in 2012, nearly three quarters of union members have signed contracts with average pay increases of one to two per

The projected surplus for this year is trimmed from $197 million in February to $153 million, and de Jong had to trim contingency funds to reach that.

The budget calls for $30 million in spending cuts this year, after last year's reduction of $20 million in all ministries except health. The government's "core review" of government operations is getting underway with a target of another $50 million in savings by the end of 2014, but no program targets are identified in the budget update.

Revelstoke RCMP arrested one female youth for mischief following graffiti incidents around Revelstoke late last week. RCMP expect to charge three more youths.

"Grad 2013" was sprayed on several buildings in town, including the Revelstoke RCMP station, the Revelstoke Community Centre, school property, public buildings and random walls.

RCMP said they believe three other males were involved in the incidents.

RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Kim Hall said the investigation is ongoing "with anticipated arrests to follow."

In a statement, Hall said community cooperation helped the RCMP with the case. "The police appreciate the help of students and members of the community for their offer of assistance in cleaning the graffiti off the buildings and their help in the investigation," Hall said.

are a lot of things that need to come together and few people that see it through, so thanks to everyone involved for your hard work and perseverance!

Saturday is shaping up to be a great show. It looks like the wildfire situation isn’t too drastic so we can enjoy the unit crews coming out to challenge the public in the events.

The birling pond will be waiting to claim its many victims once again and the custom, hand-made prizes will make anybody try their hardest to win one.

We have veered away from running a professional show for the last few years because we wanted to create events that any person in the public could come out and give a try. All you need is enthusiasm and a sense of adventure.

Our community is largely built on a logging heritage and it’s great to see everyone able to come and enjoy timber sports.

B.C Interior Forestry Museum highlights tree-planting experience Aaron Orlando

For a European tourist passing through B.C on a road trip, the visual impact of logging can be shocking, raising questions about the sustainability of clear-cut logging.

They bring those questions to the B.C. Interior Forestry Museum in Revelstoke, explained museum operations manager Anna Minten.

What the visitors don't get from their vantage point from the highway is a closer look at what's actually happening on the ground in the bush.

"A lot of tourists are concerned about the clear-cutting and want to know why it has to be done that way," Minten said. "There's enough questions and we're trying to showcase ourselves as not just a museum showcasing the past but as a discovery centre."

These questions are part of the inspiration for the museum's new exhibit, set to open this summer.

'The Reforestation Process and Tree-Planter's Experience” showcases the full cycle of the forestry process, highlighting the post-harvest process.

The exhibit will focus on the facts and the people.

The factual displays include signs and statistics explaining the scope of reforestation, an often overlooked part of the industry. It's about explaining. "It happens and it's part of the cycle of the forest," Minten said. "It's there to maintain

the industry, our recreation space and it needs to be done."

The people-focus highlights the hard work of silviculture workers, including the backbreaking efforts of front-line tree-planters.

"We talk about life as a treeplanter, what camp life is like," explained Minten.

The museum worked with researcher Rob Brown who explored the history of reforestation.

Photographer Jeremi Bourassa ventured into the bush with local silviculture crews for a visual exploration of the work. Workers labour under supply helicopters and tackle the gruelling, muddy mountainside terrain of the local B.C. Interior Rainforest.

The display also includes a historical component, highlighting

the pioneers of the industry and how it's changed over time.

Are you a tree-planting or silviculture pioneer? The museum wants your input and artifacts. "I would love some more items for the display," Minten said. "We're still looking for archival materials.

Anything that relates about what life was like for a tree-planter."

They want photos, antique tools, memories and other historical items for the display.

Revelstoke's Signs Ink is putting together some of the signage for the displays; the exhibit should be completed shortly.

Revelstoke's B.C. Interior Forestry Museum returns with a fund-raising calendar for the second season, this time featuring the pin-up men of the local forestry sector.

Museum advertising co-ordinator Katie Burrell said the 2013 Chicks with Chainsaws calendar, which featured women from

the Revelstoke forestry sector, was a big success.

Mayor Raven presents a plaque to Joe Kozek of Joe Kozek Sawmills as part of a commemmoration of the Revelstoke Community Forest Corporation’s 20th anniversary. Kozek was honoured for his and his family’s contributions to the local industry. Raven said the family should be “commended for their participation” in RCFC. “Joe [Kozek] was a very strong supporter of the [RCFC] in the very beginning and all the way throughout,” he said.

Raven also presented two plaques to Downie Timber, one to retired manager Jack Heavenor and the other to the Gorman family, the owners of the mill. “[Downie] has run for 25 years without shutdown, which is unique and to be commended in the forest industry. Most mills are up and down,” Raven said. “We can’t overstate the role of the Gorman family.” Barry Wagner of Downie Timber accepted the plaques.

The final plaque was dedicated to Dick Jones of Cascade Cedar. “Dick was a strong supporter from the very beginning,” Raven said. “Dick is a big part of our community.”

New Revelstoke performance shop Powerhouse Customs creates dream summer and winter rides suited for local conditions.

Owner Ron MacDougall shows me a new custom boondocking snowmobile chassis he’s putting together at their shop in the Revelstoke Industrial Park. When completed, it will be in the $12,000 range – and that’s without the engine. Higher-end turnkey rides roll out of the shop in the $40,000 range, ready to tackle the steepest chutes.

MacDougall invited my by to learn about the services offered at Powerhouse Customs, a performance shop offering basic and performance services for motorcycles, snowmobiles and marine engines.

MacDougall has been in the sled business for 35 years. He started in Lloydminster in 1977 and operated the Polaris dealership in Penticton after that. He specializes in customs and uses his full-service fabrication shop to offer a range of mechanical services for sleds, bikes and other small motors. They also offer parts and services, such as motorcycle tires.

Now that the June monsoon is behind us, local and visiting motorcyclists will be back on the road.

In addition to their full-service motorcycle shop, MacDougall is manufacturing dual-sport adventure motorcycles based on the Harley-Davidson 1200 Sportster. The combined street and offroad bikes are ideal for exploring Interior roads and then going further into the mountains.

Powerhouse Customs opened its doors in December of 2012.

Local bike and sled enthusiasts know about its custom works – they’ve built their reputation over many years, near and far. (By far I mean far – Powerhouse Customs just got a feature in Freerider Snowmobile Magazine, Sweden’s biggest sledding publication.)

Now MacDougall wants to get the word out that they offer a full range of services for riders, including repairs. “We’re here to provide a good services and build ourselves a good business,” he said.

Big donation for Kovach Park

RBC bank manager Lynne Welock hands a donation of $25,000 to Revelstoke Mayor David Raven at city council’s June 25 meeting. The money will be used to help bring in age-friendly recreation equipment to Kovach Park as part of an ongoing restoration project. Welock said the donation commemorated the Revelstoke RBC Branch’s 50th anniversary in the community. How close would you get to a beehive? Until recently, my answer would have been "not very." That all changed last week when I found myself inching closer and closer to a beehive populated with 25,000 bees, to the point that I was sticking my recorder into the hive to capture some audio of their buzzing.

“It’s really exciting to see a full frame of bees working away and they don’t care that you’re there," Ron Glave told me moments before. "It’s so different from what you learn as kids growing up around bees.”

He was right. The bees were so busy building up their hive, creating new honey combs, reproducing and making honey that they had little time for me.

Glave is new to beekeeping, having gotten started this spring, but he's already taken to the lifestyle. He started the Facebook page Revelstoke Beekeeping, where he shares photos of his own experiences as well as links to articles offering advice on beekeeping. He said that with the Local Food Initiative being spearheaded by the North Columbia Environmental Society, there are lots of people interested in beekeeping.

“I’ve learned so much about honey, so much about bees,” said Glave. “They flap their wings 200 times in a second and they can travel 15 kilometres in an hour.

What’s going on with the colony collapse disorder. All that stuff – it puts me more in tune and aware.” *** Humans have been harvesting wild honey for more than 10,000 years. Beekeeping, or apiculture as it's known in technical terms, is an ancient practice that dates to at least 4,500 years ago in Ancient Egypt. Modern beekeeping dates to the 18th century, when people started creating their own hives.

Today, it is generally done to collect honey or other products of the hive, help pollinate crops, or to produce bees for sale.

Glave asked that I not reveal the location of his hive due to uncertainties around beekeeping in local bylaws. All I will say is reaching it involved climbing two ladders onto a rooftop. Once there, his lone hive sat there, with bees buzzing in and out of the small opening at the bottom. We stood about 20 feet away and spoke for a bit about his experiences beekeeping.

He got into it when Bill Saunders hosted a workshop on beekeeping at the community centre.

“It piqued my interest," said Glave. "The girl I was dating at the time was making mead – honey wine – and through her, my awareness increased about what was going on with bees in the world.

I was looking for a hobby and the whole idea of working with bees appealed to me.”

Working with Saunders, he built a hive and ordered a box of bees from deHoog Apiaries in Salmon Arm. (You can also order bees from New Zealand.) The bees came in a box with four frames, which Glave transferred into his hive – once again with help from Saunders.

“When I started it was just the bottom box, this middle board and then an empty box that had a jar of sugar water. That helps them get started and get familiar with the area," said Glave. “Then you start to expand. After about three or four weeks you add on the next level.

And then a month after that you add on the next level.”

The hive is expanded as the bees reproduce. And they like to get busy – a queen bee can lay 2,000 eggs a day, most of which are female worker bees, with the rest being male drones. Bees have a short lifespan – only about six weeks – but the population of a hive still multiplies quickly. Glave estimated his hive had gone from the initial 5,000 bees he received in April to about 25,000 in late-June.

He started with one box and four frames and is now up to four boxes with 10 frames each (not all are full). The frames each have a honeycomb pattern built in and the bees work away building up the honeycombs, fertlizing eggs and producing honey. These days, Glave’s bees pretty much take care of themselves. In August, he’ll collect the honey and then leave the hive for the winter.

“There is no more sugar water in there. They’re foraging, they’re going out," said Glave. "If you look close enough, you can see they’re packing pollen and they’re feeding the hive. Over the past month they’ve built up enough honey and honeycomb. They’ve got a pretty constant food source that they’ve developed in there.” *** The day after I met with Glave, Saunders came by my office to talk beekeeping. He got into beekeeping last year; he said it was something that had always interested

him so he finally took the plunge by ordering two hives. He gave one to Robert Jay at Terra Firma Farms and the other he kept. On the day they received their bees, they went to place them in the hive without any protection. “Neither of us got stung," Saunders said. "We didn’t dress up or smoke them or anything. We thought it was easy.”

Saunders set up his hive at his home in Southside. On two occasions his hive swarmed. That's when either a hive fills up, so the bees escape to find a new home; or when a colony produces a second queen, who flies off to form her own colony.

“The first time I caught the swarm," said Saunders. "It was right on the ground beside the hive.

I ended up putting that in another hive so I had two hives."

The second time, he was at work and wasn't able to catch the swarm; he lost about 20,000 bees. He went into the hive and took out all the queen bee eggs, but he ended up with a queen-less hive, "which was almost a catastrophe," he said.

“I had to get my other hive I got from the first swarm, put it with the original hive and they got back together and had a queen.”

There are lots of resources available on beekeeping. Saunders bought the book Harmonic Farming: Bees, by Werner M. Gysi.

There are countless websites, YouTube videos, Facebook pages, and more available for the budding beekeeper to rely on. There are also a few old hands in Revelstoke that Saunders told me about, but I wasn't able to reach them for this article.

Saunders was so enthused by beekeeping that he held an introductory workshop at the communicty centre and, later, a hive building workshop.

Glave said he plans on limiting his apiary to one hive and he plans on collecting the honey to share with friends and family. Saunders wants to develop a much larger operation on his property in Beaton. His ultimate goal is to breed bees that aren't affected by pesticides, herbicides or any genetically modified crops. "I want to have high-quality, natural bees," he said.

Eventually, he wants to have enough hives going to sell his bees to farmers. With the population of bees declining due to colony collapse disorder, he thinks the price of a bee hive could rise significantly in the coming years.

“Bees right now, they’re $150

per hive in the spring, for 5,000 bees and a queen," he said. “A couple of years from now it might be $400-500 for a box in the spring.” *** After I finished speaking with Ron Glave he suited up and opened up his hive for me. At first I was hesitant to get too close but slowly but surely I crept closer to the thousands of bees. Eventually I felt almost completely safe as I snapped pictures. I could see the honey being produced and the hive being developed. The bees were way too busy working away to care about me.

Attack of the Killer Bees? Not here.

The course was set up by teacher Jeff Colvin, who put together a curriculum that included everything from how to write a Section 57 application to get a trail approved, to writing grant applications, to trail building techniques. Colvin seemed pretty sure it was the only full-credit high school course of its kind out there. He based the course on International Mountain Biking Association standards. The students put together an application that was approved by Sites and Trails BC to build School’s Out, and then they spent a few days of hard labour building the trail, which includes an optional 4-metre table-top jump, and several big berms. Bugden, a professional trail builder, was there to provide advice on how to properly shape the aspects of the trail. The result is a wide, buff section of single-track – reminiscent of the popular Loggin Leftovers trail – that provides another flowy option in the final section of the Boulder Mountain trail network heading into the parking lot.

he newly-completed Mica Heliskiing lodge perches on a ridge above the Mica Dam, overlooking the Kinbasket reservoir – a jewel in a crowning achievement done mostly by Revelstokians.

The old lodge was bulldozed on April 5, and just eight months later on Dec. 5, Vic Van Isle delivered a new, 12-bedroom, and nearly 14,000 square-foot luxury lodge.

Mica Heliskiing marketing manager Darryn Shewchuk had high praise for the contractor and small army of subcontractors who built and polished the lodge.

“It’s just absolutely amazing that they could pull off such a high-end luxury building in eight months. There are luxury homes half that size that have taken two years to build.” he said. “It’s unbelievable. It’s truly an eighth-wonder of the world.”

The building is certainly not a ski shack. It boasts a massive living area, a media room, a full kitchen, bar and many high tech amenities. There are hot tubs, private views of the reservoir from every room, a full gym, a gourmet kitchen and massage studios.

“The building is ridiculously overbuilt. The walls are all six-inch thick with double matting and double drywall for sound-proofing,” Shewchuk said. “The floors are saw-cut, 12-inch wide timber and all the stone … is all from Mt. Robson.”

Giant fir beams, wooden planked flooring, natural cedar finishings, log walls, custom concrete counters, immaculate rock work, sheer glass and engineered lighting design synthesize rustic the cabin feel with modern sheik.

Local artist Tina Lindegaard was handed a $50,000 budget to scout and commission works from local and Kootenay artists, which are featured throughout.

It’s the work of CEI Architecture, who add the lodge to an impressive array of public and private buildings in B.C. including the Chuck Bailey Rec-

reation Centre in Surrey, the Northwest Community College in Smithers and Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence at Okanagan College. The B.C. company has received many accolades for green and sustainable construction.

“They really got what we were looking to accomplish in keeping the cozy feel of the existing lodge, but really making something that’s modern, state-of-the-art and combining those two elements,” Shewchuk said. “They pulled it off amazingly.”

Behind the natural wood and glass, there’s a high-tech substructure. The media room offers bigscreen TVs next to the fireplace. Many rooms wirelessly sync the built-in sound system with your smartphone. The ski room features lockers with built-in drying fans. The room has an overall negative pressure so, “You don’t get that wet boot smell going thorough the whole lodge,” Shewchuk joked.

The finishings match the modern/rustic mix. The wire-brushed solid fir doors cost in the thousands.

Restored metal lamps accentuated the rooms. The luxe linens and light-cancelling drapes welcome you to a dark sleep, and open to a panoramic view in the morning.

Shewchuk wouldn’t disclose the price tag. Mica Heliskiing is a partnership between minority owners Dan and Susan McDonald and newer majority owner Patrick Callaghan. The McDonald’s are heliskiing veterans who operated Island Lake Lodge near Fernie before moving to Revelstoke and starting Mica. Callaghan is a California-based computer industry veteran and hardcore ski enthusiast who backed the project.

“It’s one specific owner who put the money out of his pocket to build something he wanted to build,” explained Shewchuk. “That being said, he wouldn’t have done it if the company wasn’t profitable. We’re sold out nine or ten months in advance.”

Ryan ‘Big Dog’ Hill will be one of the 12 local forestry workers featured in the Studs & Stumps calendar being put out by the B.C. Interior Forestry Museum.

Kevin Kraus leaves Grizzlies Jarmula, Smith, Viznaugh for Salmon Arm post contend in RCA road series

Kevin Kraus is moving on after one season as the Revelstoke Grizzlies head coach after being hired as an assistant coach with the Junior A Salmon Arm Silverbacks.

“It’s an opportunity that’s hard to pass up,” Kraus told the Times

Review. “Working in the BCHL with a coach like Troy Mick is an opportunity that doesn’t come around too often. When I got offered it, I decided to jump on it.”

Kraus, 23, was hired as an assistant coach with the Grizzlies at the start of the 2010-11 season.

The second stage of the Revelstoke Cycling Association road series featured some fast and furious racing on an excellent criterium course in Arrow Heights on June 25. The fast course circuit course featured wide corners and good pavement and with a short uphill section to keep things interesting.

The RCA held two races over the crit course. Wade Viznaugh won the recreational race, beating out Courtney Rennie.

The rain held off long enough for an exciting second race.

Kellen Viznaugh and Bart Jarmula made an early break from the rest of the field, and remained ahead of the pack entering the first intermediate sprint Teenage rider Kellen Viznaugh was too quick for Jarmula, taking the first sprint stage.

The pack reeled in the leaders before the second intermediate sprint, which was won by Jarmula.

The pace quickened with two laps remaining. After some vying for position down the back straight Jarmula went into the final corner too fast, narrowly avoiding a crash.

Jarmula’s miscalculation cleared the way for Stuart Smith to out-sprint Kellen Viznaugh for the victory.

The third race of the Twoonie Road Race series is a three-person team time trial on July 9, with registration at 6:30 p.m. at the Revelstoke Airport. Teams will competed on a 20-kilometre out-andback format on Airport Way. Newcomers, including individual riders, are welcome.

Fans of the criterium format race can watch or ride in the Revelstoke Downtown Crit race as part of the Bike Fest Revelstoke festivities on Aug. 10–12.

Kevin Kraus spent two seasons with the Revelstoke Grizzlies.

the BCHL to the RBC Cup. Kraus assumed the head coaching duties of the Revelstoke Grizzlies after Randy Quakenbush was let go following the 2011-12 season. In his only season as coach, the Grizzlies went 27-21-3-1 for a third place finish in the Doug Birks Division. They were eliminated in the first round in five games by the Sicamous Eagles.

“I enjoyed my past two years here and I thought we could build on what we started to do last year,” said Kraus. “But, again, it is hard to pass up an opportunity like that.”

Mick is regarded as one of the top coaches in Junior A hockey.

In the past, he coached the Vernon Vipers to an RBC Cup. In 2010, he guided the Grizzlies to the Keystone Cup as the top Junior B team in western Canada. He left following the season to join the Pursuit of Excellence hockey program in Kelowna. He joined the Silverbacks last year and is regarded as one of the better coaches in Junior A. “I’m a young coach and to work with a guy like Troy who’s been around and won RBC cups as a coach – he’s a proven coach in that league and he’s one of the top recruiters out there,” said Kraus. “There’s a lot of things I can learn from him. Not just coaching wise, but life lessons as well.”

Kraus was the Grizzlies fifth head coach in five seasons.

Owner Lew Hendrickson said he was disappointed to lose Kraus, but that he had already been in contact with several candidates for the vacated position.

“I thought he would be around for one more year,” said Hendrickson. “Things changed and the opportunity came up. Troy phoned me and asked me for permission and I reluctantly said yes.”

Aquaducks have strong swim meet in Kelowna heat Eliza McGuire

Revelstoke Aquaducks

The sun’s rays beat down hard on the H2O Complex in Kelowna where the Aquaducks travelled to compete this Canada Day weekend. However, based on the stellar performances of the Revelstoke swimmers, the heat did not bother them, and hydration was not an issue.

Multiple Ducks contributed points to the overall third place finish for the team at a meet where multiple teams from other regions came to race.

While this made for tougher competition with the additional teams in the region for the weekend, it also gave a good insight as to what to expect come provincials in August.

Nevertheless, the Aquaducks still

in the medley relay and third in the freestyle with Stefan Spataro, Colm Molder, Leif Carnegie and Caine McCabe.

— Hunter Stewardson came second in the 50 meter breaststroke and Leif Carnegie landed on the podium in the 100 meter breaststroke.

— Colm Molder finished well enough in his five individual events to win himself the third aggregate for the Division 4 boys — Gina Cinelli and Josh Rota won themselves third aggregates with their spectacular swims on the weekend.

— Emily Pfeiffer had a spectacular meet winning four of five events and picking up the first aggregate in Division 7, as well as meet records in the 50 and 100 meter butterfly, and the

— It’s hard to believe that kind of performance would be topped, but Bryce Molder did just that, winning all five of his individual events and breaking three meet records, as well as bettering all three of his own club records, and, not surprisingly win-

ning first aggregate for Division 5 boys.

The final competition before the Region comes to Revelstoke on July 13-14 is next weekend in Merritt, and the team is looking to keep the momentum building to come back home strong to host.

The Revelstoke Derailers learned a valuable lesson in last Saturday’s roller derby bout at the Forum – don’t use an oil-based smoke machine for the prematch ceremonies.

The Derailers bout against the Sun City Sirens was called off half-way through the second half due to unsafe conditions on the track. The Derailers were up 176-123 when the bout was called. The machine left a greasy residue across one corner of the track.

“It was awful,” said jammer Tennille ‘Kernel Panic’ Barber, who took a hard fall on her hip early in the half. “I got the biggest bruise from both teams from it. We couldn’t even stand on all four wheels.”

Before the early-end, the Derailers had slowly built up a lead over the Kelowna-based Sirens, who were reinforced by some other Okanagan players for the bout. They showed up with 10 skaters to the Derailers’ 14.

“They’re all really, really good,” said Barber. “We’re still proud we did so well. We’re coming together as a team.”

Three rookies, dubbed ‘Fresh Meat’ played in their first bouts for the Derailers. Several players tried out for a regional all star team last week that is being formed to take part in a tournament in Vancouver on July 13-14. The team has yet to be announced.

The next Derailers next bout is against the NWO Roller Girls from Chilliwack, B.C., Saturday, July 13, at the Forum.

Paul was born in Gravenhurst, Ontario on July 4, 1936 and had been a resident of Revelstoke for 22 years. Paul enjoyed operating sawmills and had a passion for building things from wood and lumber. He especially enjoyed his time on his property at Three Valley Gap. Paul was predeceased by his wife Kit, brother Brock and sister Marie. He is survived by three children: Cam Thomson of Three Valley Gap, Scott Thomson of Newmarket, Ontario and Paula Thomson of Winnipeg; six grandchildren: Alex, Nick, Morgan, Jason, Terra and Chantel and two brothers, Morley and Peter Thomson, both of Ontario.

Mike Hooker: ‘You were a part of something special’ Mike Hooker Superintendent

I am so pleased to be addressing you today. Although I do so as the Superintendent, I feel like I’m still your principal… I know I feel that way because I am still taking personal credit for your success as young people, and still losing sleep when I am worried that you are acting, well, like young people.

I started missing you back in January, when I moved next door, and Mr Kenyon moved into my office….

I have had the pleasure of knowing many of you since your kindergarten year, others since grade eight and a few in the past couple of years.

I want to take this time to tell you how much I appreciate each of you. When you arrived at RSS, I told you over and over that RSS was about Respect, Safety and Success. I also told you that it was our

responsibility together to ensure that you had a safe place to go to school, and that it was your responsibility to make it happen to protect it, and to stand up and say something if it someone wasn’t doing their part.

I told you that you were going to be part of something special, that at RSS we “let others be who they

want to be.” That meant being supportive of everyone, not just the ones who you called your friends.

As you worked your way through the grades, I’d share things like your provincial exam scores and satisfaction survey results – and I’d compare them to the scores and responses from other schools in the province and show you that you

were part of something special.

We made a commitment to dealing with problems. Was there some nonsense on Twitter, or Facebook?

You bet. Did you deal with it? You bet. Was it perfect all time? No way – couldn’t be and still be a school with 500 people in close quarters day after day…

So how come you were a part of something special? The staff at RSS cares about you. Sometimes that caring drove you wild, when the caring seemed liked nagging.

The teachers and staff at RSS know this is a special place. Your families – this room is full of family who care, and I know that each person here today, there are many others who would be here for you if they could.

Finally, credit to you. I believe that we kind of harped at you about looking after each other. Sometimes that was tough, because it didn’t just mean helping out a friend.

Sometimes it meant standing up

and telling someone, “This just isn’t the way we do things here.”

There was nothing better than to be chatting with a younger student who hadn’t quite figured out how to make sure everyone feels safe (so maybe they were in “trouble”) and he or she says “how’d you know I did that?” The answer is, some of the older kids came and let me know, because they know they have something special here.

I’d like to finish where I started.

I am going to miss you. Having said that, we know that you are prepared to leave and have a positive affect on how people treat each other in Revelstoke, in other communities, in colleges and in workplaces.

I trust that you will take Respect Safety and Success with you. You are all going to go on to “real life”.

Be good good to each other, to everyone you come in contact with, that, is what “real life”, is really about.

Congratulations to the Graduates of Revelstoke Secondary School 2013, I want to begin by telling you that I am very frustrated with you. I have been here for less than six months and have worked extremely hard to learn all of your names and to learn more about you, and now you leave? I only have so much RAM! I can only blame myself. This graduating class has welcomed me in a manner that I find gracious and warm. My first day Zev and Kirill bought me balloons. One said, “Congratulations!” and the other said, “It’s A Boy!” They explained that there was no balloon to welcome a new principal, so they had done their best. Although this graduating class firmly belongs to Mr.

Hooker, I felt welcomed and since then I feel that our time together has been successful.

In contemplating what to say in this speech, I sought advice from others in the school. Mr. Hooker’s advice was to keep it short. I am hoping he meant that it should be short for the sake of the program, and not for the interest quotient of the speaker.

I have decided to speak briefly about a theme with which we have all had experience these past six months, specifically that of ‘constant change’. I love that it’s also an oxymoron, like “jumbo shrimp”, and “dodge ram.”

Constant change is a given. As we grow as individuals and seek out new experiences and challenges, things change and then go on changing. Only in our memories will we find that things do not change.

Now, change can be scary sometimes. Ask me how I felt on my first morning here, knowing that I was following in the footsteps of Mr. Hooker. The anxiety I was feeling was greatly reduced by my balloon gift. That anxiety, however, was a fantastic energizer and opportunity to rise up and work hard to be successful. It brings to mind Mark Twain’s quotation that, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.”

That is my message to you today: “Be Courageous.” Face this constant change that is a never-ending aspect of your present and future with courage. Having met you for this short time, it is something I can say with certainty; you have the courage to be successful.

Valedictorian: Our future will be even more enjoyable Tayller McLean Valedictorian

Good morning, parents, family, friends, grads, teachers, Mr. Kenyon, Mr. Hooker. Thank you all for attending our graduation ceremony.

This past week has been great, no class, no responsibilities, no worries. It felt the same as the past five years of high school and the feeling of graduation hasn’t sunk in yet. We grads woke up in excitement while the rest woke to reassure themselves that this is all true.

All of 13 years have passed and are now stories embedded as memories, the good and the bad that have shaped our grad class to what stands today.

First it was preschool, then elementary, now high school and next the future that awaits. As we peer back into an awesome five years, we can see that Revelstoke and RSS have been an integral part in shaping our grad class.

We were timid grade eights who struggled to make it to class on time, building friendships with those from rival schools, and abandoning old ones. We avoided main hall in fear of being terrorized by the grade 12’s, but we are now them. We don’t seem like the grads from five years ago but the look on the grade eights’ faces tells different.

By grade nine, groups began to form by interests: there were the shop kids, jocks, over-achievers, “soon to be ski bums”, and the ones that fit into every group. A unique blend of these groups have now formed the mosaic grad class of 2013.

When I glance to my side I see a group of mostly mature fellow graduates full of insight, ideas, goals, and hopes for the future. Our progression over the past 13 years has been amazing. We have gone from asking for help from our parents to teaching them the things we have learned. We once had our parents drive us everywhere and now most of us drive ourselves; although some of us require more help from the RCMP than others.

This journey has been witnessed by our parents who have helped us through the downs and pushed us to achieve goals. They have been with us for each step in our lives and will continue to help us as we leave for the first time. I would like to applaud them for what they have

done. Thank you!

Through each stage of our lives, time seems to move faster and faster and it only makes sense to think that tomorrow will pass faster than today. Dr. Suess couldn’t have worded the passing of time any better: “How did it get so late so soon?

It’s night before it’s afternoon.

December is here before it’s June.

My goodness how the time has flown. How did it get so late so soon?”

This fall we will encounter entirely new people, new challenges, and new fun. Yet hopefully we can embrace the lessons learned in the past 13 years. In a way, it’s a shame that we have come so close just in time for us to all part ways for the next stages in our lives. Our roots are Revelstoke and RSS and no matter how far apart we travel we carry this experience.

It is at this point in our lives

that we realize the beauty of Revelstoke, with its opportunities and restrictions that makes this grad class unique.

Thank you to all the teachers that have guided us through the past years, especially to Mr. Beitel and Mr. Phelps who taught very different courses but both influenced the students they taught to work harder, learn more and enjoy the material learned. Please give them a round of applause.

Even though time keeps passing faster, I believe strongly that our future will be even more enjoyable. Every stage in this journey we encountered more and more decisions and the help of our parents, family, and teachers, we could make the decisions. I am confident that each of us will make the right choices because this day is only the beginning. We have finally made it, this day is for all of us.

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2013 The first years last forever!

(Intro, Mr. Jarrett Spannier) Hello Grads, It was a day, not unlike today – perhaps it was a year ago. I stood on a stage, said some puns, stated some facts and left with a tear in my eye for a passing group of grads. Then, at the back of the gym, I was approached by a hulk of young man who spoke ever so gently and said “Hey Spanny, same time next year?”

And so here I am again today in front of you – but this time I do not come alone! We do not know if you are ready! We don’t know if you have really thought about what this all means. And we have some questions to ask of you. So grads of 2013, before you are sent

on your way you will visited by three ghostly spirits – a reflection of things old and new and not yet happened …

But until you heed their words…. YOU SHALT NOT PASS! (thunder and lightning boom) (Enter Mr. Stu Phelps) So… grads, before you and I are free from this place, I felt the need to point out one final irony of your high school life. During the course of today’s proceedings, you may hear references as to how your individuality and your uniqueness are the keys to your future success. Keep in mind that you’ll hear these comments as you all sit there… arranged in alphabetical order, wearing your identical caps and dressed in your identical gowns. So I ask you Grads of 2013… do you feel special yet?

I’ll begin by paraphrasing a quote from Steve Jobs who was the driving force behind the success of Apple Computers. He said, “You can’t connect the dots of your life by looking forward; you can only connect them by looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” Let’s look at the dots of your past and connect them to see what got you to where you are today.

As you age, you’ll look back and realize that you packed a lot of living and learning into your first 18 years and that it was in those 18 years that the rest of your lives were shaped and the foundation for your future was laid down. In fact, I suspect that when you look back on just the past five years that you’ve spent at RSS you’ll realize just how intense this period of growth, learning and maturity was and how many changes you’ve gone through. Oh… and along with all the wonderful accomplishments that you’ll look back on, you’ll also look back on the really, really dumb things you’ve done.

Ask yourself, “What was I thinking?” You’ll then swear that when you have your own kids you’ll never let them make the same kinds of mistakes. Sure… good luck with that one.

This journey through the past starts with your genes. Come on now, you know I’m talking about the one’s that you received from

your parents, the one’s that put together this “pocket protector package for chromosomes” that we all are. Your first introduction to this idea was the “chick unit” you did in Kindergarten. I sure hope at least one of you had the innocence to ask your kindergarten teacher where you came from and that she had the courage to answer you honestly… otherwise… I might just have to have a little chat with her when I get home.

So, your genes are responsible for things like your properly functioning liver, lungs and heart which have all done a lot of work to get you to this point. They also explain your intelligence and, to a certain degree, your behaviour too.

OK, OK, I know it’s weird for me to stand up here and lavish praise on your internal organs for getting you this far… but you gotta give me a little latitude here seeing as how I was the biology teacher! Obviously you all know that there’s a lot more to what got you here than a random assortment of genes and mostly it’s the people that have been with you for the last 18 years: your friends, your teachers, your family and especially your parents.

All of these people have aided your development in uniquely different ways. Your friends were often able to teach you what was “right” by convincing you to experience what was “wrong.” For whatever reason, when you’re younger and you get together with your friends, you often push the boundaries of what you have been taught is “acceptable.” You don’t exactly know what will happen if you cross those boundaries so, with the support of your friends around you… you experiment.

Come on now guys, who among you can deny that you were convinced by your grade one friend “Tommy” that you should go pee in the bushes during recess at elementary school even though Columbia Park Elementary had perfectly good toilets?

Or what about your friend in grade 7 who, after learning about the digestive system, wondered out loud what might happen to a button if you tied a thread to it, swallowed it and then tried to pull it out of your stomach five minutes later? These little “life trials” that

your mom would never condone helped shape who you are. They helped you determine what boundaries might be OK to push or even break and which ones clearly were not.

Your teachers from pre-school to high school have all helped develop your character as well, but in a more formal way. We are charged with teaching you a curriculum that is more structured and typically way less fun than what you do with your friends. We pushed you to try things that you may not ever have been inclined to try on your own or sometimes we pushed you to get your work completed on time so that you might just be able discover some talent or ability that you never knew you had.

Through these struggles and frustrations we, your teachers, hoped that we taught you more than just how to make a mitre joint, change a tire, write a haiku or perform an acid/base titration. We also hoped that you would realize that an honest effort really is its own reward. I also hope that you now recognize that your teachers did more than just dole out facts and teach processes and that over the last 13 years they were able to demonstrate to you the appreciation and passion for subjects and a profession they love.

Now to your parents. What is it exactly that they’ve done for you?

That can be a tough question to answer for younger teenagers, who have a false sense of invincibility and who often feel that they’d get by “just fine” without their parents hanging around asking stupid questions. You already know that they’ve been the taxi service that picked you up and dropped you off at Jumping Jacks, soccer practices, birthday parties and, a little later on, maybe even 12 Mile.

They’ve had to re-learn math so they could work through a homework assignment with you.

They’ve spent hours on the ice and in the basement helping you develop your wrist shot. They’ve encouraged you to pick yourself up off the floor and try that difficult dance move just one more time.

And they’ve taught you to make sure that when you took an engine apart, you’d put all the nuts, bolts and screws back in places where you’d be sure find them again.

Believe me, to get you through these things they’ve had to pull out every trick in the book, even though there isn’t a book. They’ve had to suck it up and be optimistic and encouraging for you at times when they were feeling pretty beat down themselves. They had to play the bad cop when it was breaking their hearts to be tough on you and, although they too were filled with doubt about your future, they had to be strong for you after you suffered a major disappointment, injury or breakup and wondered exactly where your life was headed as well.

Your parents have had to do all of these things with no training, no handbook and no licensing program. It was all learned on the fly and fuelled by love and it got you to where you are today.

RSS grads of 2013, after 18 years, you have each developed a

reputation and that reputation has been created by connecting the dots of your past. Now it’s up to you to use the knowledge, skills and beliefs that you have learned from all the people that have surrounded you for the last 18 years and trust that these things will take you successfully and happily into the next stages of your lives.

This has been a real honour for me. You are an intelligent, marvelous and simply “ducky” group of grads and, honestly, despite the fact that you are identically dressed you are, in fact, very, very unique.

Thank you so much for giving this tired old teacher one last chance to talk at you.

So 13 years of schooling have elapsed and here you are – a high school graduate. I asked my calculus 12 class about a month ago if it had hit home that they have less than a month left. So you have to think about it now since you now have less than one hour left!

What does graduation mean?

There are some people in this world that would say it means nothing – big deal you completed high school – but those are usually the people who hated school, are unhappy everyday of their life or they are probably hunting gators on that reality show Swamp People. There’s a fun fact – when your children ask you what show was on TV when you graduated you can say “Swamp People.” The only TV where they subtitle the English words of English speaking people so you can understand them! Now that’s quality entertainment!

So what does graduation mean?

Lets put in the point of view of your parents.

Your parents now have the right to kick your lazy butts out the door and not be legally responsible for you. Lets think about that... When you left the house this morning, was there a suitcase sitting by the front door? Dude, it might be happening sooner than you think!

The days of mommy covering for you are now over: “(cough, cough) Oh, Mommy I not feeling good , can I stay home today?”

“Sure dear you rest, I’ll phone the university and tell them you have ‘test-i-tist’ I’m sure they will understand.”

“Yeah, they will understand!”

The excuses for being late, for not finishing your report are gone as every action now has a reaction. (Hey, isn’t that some physics law?)… Oh and remember that tax lesson from math 11 – yeah that’s about to hit home real soon too.

So I ask – are you thinking about it yet?

You are done with high school!

So what does graduation mean?

When I think of high school graduation I think of opportunity!

You now have the opportunity to do what you want to do – be that University, trade school, travel or work. The science nerds can go be science nerds, the mechanics can go be mechanics and the artsy types can go be artsy. Seriously, you have that choice. Some of you

will never have to write another essay, some will never have to bounce another ball and sadly some will never have to solve for X ever again… and that bad umcay! But, lets see how you view your education…

I have a job that needs doing. It is an important job so I needed the smartest person on the stage to do it. I want you to think of the smartest person on the stage...

Ok do you have your choice….

Good!

Okay the job is “the transmission in my car blew this morning I need it replaced quickly and efficiently to get to some hockey game in some remote part of BC.” So, I ask you – should I hire the “smartest person” you were just thinking of to fix it?

Here is my first LESSON for you – be careful what you judge as smart. Each one of you has a hidden talent that may not be reflected in the marks you got at school.

Just because you didn’t get 90% per cent in math doesn’t mean you can’t be a great mechanic.

Just because you didn’t grasp all the concepts of chemistry doesn’t mean you can’t go on and be a great nurse.

I have always told my students – your mark is just a number. If this mark came from memorizing so you get a good mark, you may have missed the big picture. Your effort and passion toward a task is what will set you apart. Your passion to achieve is more important than the number associated with it.

And of note: the smartest person on the stage that you were thinking about originally was passionate about their academics, passionate about the content being presented and their effort was second to none.

So as you leave high school today take a second to answer this question: I’m the best at ___________.

You might say I’m the best carpenter on the stage, I’m the best writer on the stage, I’m the best counselor on the stage or I’m the best musician on the stage. So now when I ask the question, “Who is the smartest person on the stage today?” The answer is you! (and you and you and you).

So now that you know – YOU are the smartest person on the stage – remember… The actions you undertake today can shape tomorrow. What can you do today that can change what happens tomorrow? I can tell you that nothing good has ever come from the statement, “Hey guys watch this!”

Emergency rooms thrive on the statement, “Hey guys watch this!”

This tends to be more of an issue for guys as they carry the “maledo-stupid-things-gene” from puberty to about age 26. Now, not so fast girls – you have a direct influence on the activation of the ‘male-do-stupid-things-gene’ as you are usually the reason guys say “Hey guys watch this!” Also, some males never lose the ‘maledo-stupid-things-gene’ so the actions you undertake today really can shape your tomorrow!

Who you are today and who you become tomorrow is dependent upon the choices you make. If you choose to be bitter and negative –

that is what you will be! If you choose to stay in a job you dislike – then that is your choice. Homer Simpson once said.

“They picked me because of my motivational skills. Everyone says they have to work a lot harder when I’m around.”

Is this the person who you want to be?

Make a person around you feel good today – make them laugh, make them roll their eyes – make them smile, but most importantly have a positive effect on them. If you are given a task work hard and put some passion into it. Those around you will be thankful and you can feel pride in what you have accomplished. Be the person who respects, not disrespects. Be the person

who loves, not hates. If you’re the person who makes good choices you will be able to look back on any given night and say, “That was a good day!” The best way to approach it is, “Today is a great day to be a math teacher!”

And finally, take a second to look around you! Look at the place that you grew up. It’s absolutely gorgeous! I grew up in Kelowna and I can tell you, you couldn’t pay me to move back!

In this town, the high school students smile and say hello and people respect each other. Teachers care, parents care and you grads have shown that you care too. Today your life as an adult starts.

Grad 2013 is, “Life is like a box of chocolates … you never know what you gonna get!”

And that’s all I’m gonna say about that.

(Enter Mr. Jason Stevens) Good evening ladies and gentlemen – parents, friends and of course grads of 2013. What an honour to be given the chance to impart a few words of wisdom on the/your future. I am going to focus on two key themes in regards to the future grads – adaptation and preparation!

Fortunately, I prepared my speech.

I found it was quite easy – just go to the Internet and there they are. All I had to do was print and bam! So without further adieu here we go!

Congratulations to the graduating class of Brynmawr Young Ladies College 2008.

As a proud mother of four, I can’t tell you how happy I am to be here!) ...

Oops. Well, let this be a lesson for you – always prepare a back up plan for your future endeavours. And because I did prepare, I can adapt. I have a second speech ready to go: “Guten nachmittag meine damen und herren. Willkommen bei dem zwei tausend dreizehn abschluss” ...

Okay perhaps I should have done a little more preparation. In the future you will have to learn/continue to change plans quickly as the situation arises. Keep this in mind – four of the most in-demand jobs today did not exist 10 years ago: app developer, data research miner, social media manager and millennial generational expert. (Huh?) What jobs are you preparing for that don’t even exist yet? Can you adapt? The future is rarely as you plan it. I never thought at your age I would be here. I was not planning to be a teacher, I was not planning to teach in England, I was not planning to teach French (the reason I was brought to Revelstoke in the first place), and I was never planning to stay here. And yet I was able to adapt to each opportunity, I was prepared to deal with adversity and as such, here I am!

How wonderful it has been to talk to many of you and find out what you are looking forward to short-term. Grand dreams indeed – moving out, sleeping in, freedom, not going to school, and meeting new people. Of course, short-term plans must give way to long-term dreams and here I see such promise in you: “Et sustinere futura somnia vestra pascam.”

ics, carpenters, nurses, musicians, artists, teachers, pastry chefs, medical technicians, drug addiction counselors and slackers. Actually, you can major in slackology.

I think I had a degree in slackonomics and by cracky, I think you’ll do just as well!

To what purpose work you ask? Fun, enjoyment and of course money to travel.

A little bit of Spanish for you know, “Amar y aprender de la experiencia.”

“Love and learn from the experience.”

You want to see Africa, the cradle of humanity; Greece, the cradle of democracy; Australia, the cradle of Cradle mountain; China, Thailand, Spain, Sicamous and my favorite – Ireland.

Your future is yours now – no excuses.

You have the talent, the desire and the skills required to attain all your goals, but remember two key points: failure is not final. It’s never too late to start working for your goals. Remember the words of Stephen Covey: “You are not a product of your circumstances – you are a product of your decisions.”

Life is a long and winding road (obligatory Beatle reference – could not let that pass) with many twists and turns. Along the way there are numerous forks, spoons, knives, ladles, spatulas, whisks, two litres of milk, Count Chocula, Spam – sorry, my grocery list seems to have gotten mixed in here... There are numerous forks in your road, each leading in a new direction with many possibilities ahead. Use your knowledge/experience/parents and friends advice and guidance/previous mistakes!

And should you find yourself rich or poor, take keep these words in mind: “If you have much, give of your wealth. If you have little, give of your heart.”

Remember all fears originate inside your own head (except spiders of course and clowns). Your biggest enemy will be in your own head. No one else will ever cause you more trouble. A note of caution? No, caution is not the right word. A note of awareness – look around you now.

One thing I can tell you about your future is that it is very probable that you will never be together as a group again.Soak today in because these are the people who helped shape you. In my graduating class in Rossland in 1990, 10 per cent out of the 66 have already died! I left the UK in 2006 and four months later, three graduates died in a car crash. The future is not always smiles and sunshine – storm clouds will come. Can you handle the adversity and pain of what lies ahead? Are you prepared and can you adapt? I think so!

You have been part of my life for five years and the sad part is there will be no more, but knowing the potential you show

and the future you have makes my tears cease!

It is never too late to change your future.

I am asking you consciously to choose your own path. If you are sitting here today with a square piece of cardboard on your head, and you realize the road you are heading down does not take you to the future you would like to see, then take the first exit that will take you there. If this means going against the expectations you have had for yourself for as long as you can remember, or even the expectations of those people who are close to you, then I hope you have the courage to do that. Above all else, your future should have happiness as the #1 ingredient. Strive not to be a success, but of value. Your future is yours to do with as you please, but all of us present today watch and hope. We have helped you prepare for tough questions and hopefully you can adapt to unknowable questions!

There can be no stopping you from what you are meant to be. Right now today, you are all on a winning streak. Today is not your finishing lap in the journey of life, but the beginning of a journey that none of us can see yet. This school and your parents have prepared you to tackle the economic, social, and political, ethical issues. You’ve taken care of the fun stuff – all you need now is the desire, the hard work, and the preparation for future goals.

Have the courage to do this. Courage means no short cuts, it means service to the community with no expectation or reward.

Your ideas for making the world a better place need not be heard in the future, they need to be implemented! Follow your passions, follow your happiness, but understand all things require work! All things require preparation, all things require effort. Failure is assured but not final – if you can adapt!

If you are unsure of your path, take the time to re-assess. In 2083 I hope one of you is mentioned in a grad speech because at the age of 98 you went back to school-not because it took you 80 more years to graduate from college (God help us if that is the case), but because even at the age you will realize that there is never a finish line.

Every new challenge can be daunting but life is like that. The things that matter are never easy – family, love, friendships.

“What is it that makes a complete stranger dive into an icy river to save a solid gold baby? Maybe we’ll never know.”
