Some residents of Marina Garden Estates are accusing Polygon Homes of using employees to speak at a public hearing that took place over the course of two days last week.

Malcolm Ashford said many of the young people speaking were either employees of the company or relatives of employees who were paid to be there and compensated with a hospitality suite.

“It is unfortunate that Polygon feels the proposal will not stand on its own merit, so they have to bring in their staff to hood-wink the public,” he said, adding this made a mockery and travesty of an important process.

Ashford said that without publicly declaring that they were employed

by Polygon, it contravened the Lo-

cal Government Act. “This is a blatant conflict of interest,” he said, adding praise for Coun. Scott Hamilton who recused himself from the proceedings by stating he has a family member who is employed by Polygon.

Delta’s bylaws on public hearing protocol states, “All persons who believe that their interest in property is affected by a proposed By-law must be afforded a reasonable opportunity to be heard or to submit written submissions.”

Ashford said that many of the people who spoke in favour of the development either don’t live in Delta or do not have a property interest in the project.

“Many worked for the developer and expressed general comments about the type of homes that are proposed, housing for youth, and about other Polygon developments,” said Ashford, who listed the speakers in favour of the proposal who are in some way connected to Polygon.

Mayor Lois Jackson addressed the concern of letters being read by Polygon employees at the beginning of the second night of public hearings.

“It has been suggested that such action is a conflict of interest and violates the Local Government Act,” she said. “I have discussed this matter with Delta’s municipal solicitor who has advised me that the Local Government Act provisions relating to conflict of interest only applies to members of council or its committees and not to applicants for development.”

A report on the public hearing will come forward to a future council meeting, at which time council will decide whether to approve or deny the application for third reading.

Ladner residents balk at next-door development ❙ Adrian MacNair reporter adrian@southdeltaleader.com

A proposed townhouse development in Ladner has neighbours in an adjacent condominium upset they will lose their privacy and security.

An eight-unit townhouse off Trenant Street would abut to an existing 16unit condominium off Elliott Street, but the proposed three-storey height is a non-starter.

“We’re not against the back lot being developed, we just don’t want them to completely destroy four units at the back because no one will buy them,” said Brooke Copeland, a condominium owner. “The natural light is gone, the security is gone, the privacy is gone.”

The neighbourhood is currently zoned to allow a maximum of twoand-a-half storeys, but the applicant is seeking an amendment to the Official Community Plan to allow the additional height. Architectural drawings clearly show the rooftop decks on the townhouses would allow residents to

see into most of the balconies in the condos. And because the townhouses will have a flat roof with a shared garden, Copeland said people are fearful a person could gain entry to their building from the rooftop.

Copeland said some of the condo owners were interested in “meeting the developer halfway” but said they were treated rudely and condescendingly when concerns about security were brought up at a public hearing June 23.

“The applicant claimed this was the first time he was hearing about this and suggested, along with a chuckle, some curled barbed wire atop the glass dividers may resolve the problem,” she said.

Residents are also worried that the zero lot line construction will cut off maintenance access to the west side of the Elliott Street condominiums, meaning a trench will run between the two buildings ranging in width from a half metre to one metre.

our building where there will be garbage and rats and we won’t be able to clean it,” she said, adding they will also lose access to the wall to make repairs.

Most of the townhouse lot is currently empty, except for a residential heritage building known as the McPhadyen residence. A 1928 farmhouse, the building appears on Delta’s Urban Heritage inventory, but is set to be demolished. Brian Hart,

architect of the townhouse, said the residence could possibly be moved, but so far no one has come forward to make the offer. As is customary with historic buildings, the house will be put up for sale for $1 and interested parties allowed to enter the home for historical purposes. Hart stated at the public hearing that the townhouses have been designed to 1910 styles and finished in heritage

colours to reflect the area’s character.

Although the roof will be flat, Hart said the townhouses are in the commercial district where the roofline will be similar to other commercial buildings such as the pool hall. In addition, the flat design supports the roof garden concept and addresses stormwater runoff issues.

Hart has also proposed a privacy screen along the east side of the townhouses overlooking the condominium balconies with hedging and trees on the rooftop decks.

But Copeland said that won’t address the ongoing security concerns of the buildings being so close together, nor the various other issues that have been raised. Although she said she’s not opposed to change, Copeland said the flavour of Ladner is changing too rapidly.

“Every time somebody puts up their single family dwelling for sale some developer buys it and the next thing you know there’s eight homes on it,” she said.

“Who are we,” asks Jo Anne Tait, looking around at the expectant faces in the circle.

“The Delta Bell Choir,” she answers enthusiastically.

With that, the residential care seniors of Delta Hospital’s music therapy program break into harmonic sound, as Tait orchestrates expertly.

With 14 years of experience in health care as a recreation therapist and certified dementia care practitioner, the accredited music therapist is helping seniors feel joy again through the expression of music.

“It’s one of the few therapies that works on people who have compromised higher brain function,” such as those involved in logic, analysis, decision-making, and verbal language, explains Tait.

Music therapy is on the cutting edge of health care as it pertains to dementia,

stroke, brain injuries, and the associated conditions of anxiety and depression.

The reason for its effectiveness is that music taps into people’s memories where the two are often associated.

“I’m sure you’ve experienced the flood of images and emotions that come over you when you hear a song from your particular past that’s significant for you,” says Tait. “Well, that works in spite of cognitive decline.”

Music therapy also works with stroke recovery because it doesn’t rely on spoken language for expression. Even as motor and verbal skills decline with age, these residents find their voice through playing bells, or more properly, tone chimes.

Connie Lau, manager at Mountain View Manor for Delta Hospital, is used to dealing with residents who are withdrawn or unresponsive most of the day, but says music really gets their full attention.

“I actually personally saw how positively the residents respond to the music therapist and the sessions,” she says, adding it’s quite impressive to see how well the music is syn-

chronized and pleasant it sounds, given the health problems facing some of the residents.

“I can see how happy there were, too, that they were able to do that,” she says.

Somehow, some way, music seems to touch a part of the brain that isn’t damaged by dementia or brain injuries.

Tait says that’s because although the short-term memory can be damaged, the long-term memories are usually the safe, warm, and happy places they can go, visiting songs and memories of the past. The reliving and re-experiencing of these feelings can produce an overall holistic effect. And even though Alzheimer’s disease or the health effects from a stroke can be irreversible, music therapy is still viewed as a treatment.

“The goal of music therapy isn’t necessarily to fix or to cure someone,” says Tait. “It’s about a better quality of life.”

Music therapy is very much a “come as you are” kind of activity because it doesn’t require the person to use parts of the brain that are designated for specific tasks.

Introducing

“As a music therapist, I would structure a session that would be centered on meeting the patient where they are and having a successful outcome in some way,” usually to help them reminisce, says Tait.

So far, Lau says the program has been a success, but the benefits are based on subjective and anecdotal evidence from nurses and health care workers.

“We’re still trying to have a more objective evaluation in the future to see how well in the long term it is actually helping our residents,” she says.

Funding for the music therapy program at Delta Hospital has been made possible through the hospital Auxiliary and donations from the community, and not Fraser Health.

Nevertheless, the regional health authority is fully supportive of the program.

Equipment is purchased by the Auxiliary with revenue from their thrift shop and gift shop, while two sets of Suzuki tone chimes were recently bequeathed by the family of a resident.

Huntington’s proposal comes as B.C.’s legislators are set to debate the 2014 budget, which she said is a resurrection of the budget introduced last fall but wasn’t subjected to legislative oversight because of the May election.

The Fall Fixed Election Amendment Act was previously introduced by former independent MLA Bob Simpson as part of a six-piece democratic reform agenda issued by Huntington, Simpson and independent MLA John van Dongen last February. The bill died—as all private member bills do—when the 2013 election was called.

Although Simpson and van Dongen are no longer MLAs, Huntington has said she will continue with democratic reform.

“This is one problem with an easy solution,” said Huntington. “Moving the election date to the fall would ensure our budgets receive the debate and oversight they need.”

A private member’s bill can be issued by any sitting member of the legislature, but unlike a government bill it cannot pass into law without the support of a majority of members, which is currently held by the governing BC Liberal Party.

sawwassen architect Peter Dandyk has had a hand helping to shape his community with the buildings he has designed.

As the new president of the Tsawwassen Rotary Club, he hopes to have a similarly positive effect on the community where he lives and works.

Dandyk was born in West Germany and moved to Kitchener-Waterloo as a child. After studying architecture at the University of Calgary and spending much of the 1980s working in Alberta, Dandyk arrived on Tsawwassen’s sunny shores in 1990.

His love for his adopted hometown was instant, but Dandyk says he didn’t really feel like he was a part of a community

until he moved his office to Tsawwassen more than 10 years ago.

“Once I moved [my office], I found I really became part of the community, and the community has become a big part of my life,” he says. “The only thing I regret is not doing it 15 years earlier.”

Dandyk was introduced to Rotary in 2002 and has been involved in local projects like the Rotary Square at Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, and the Diefenbaker Rotary WaterWorks Park.

“I wanted to get involved with a social organization that would let me give back to this community,” he said. “I’m really interested in positively influencing the development of this community.”

While many of Dandyk’s local projects, such as the The Olivia on 56th Street and the Solei Terrace condos on 14B Avenue, have helped define Tsawwassen’s landscape, he says his work with the local

rotary club is what brings him the most satisfaction.

“I always say my work is getting in the way of Rotary,” says Dandyk.

The Tsawwassen Rotary Club will be hosting a beer garden for Sunday’s UCI Delta Road Race at Dennison Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with Red Racer craft beers and Betty’s Vodka Iced Tea provided by Central City Brewing.

There will be seating inside the beer garden for 250 people and family seating outside with good views of the action.

“They’re the best seats in the house,” says Dandyk. “It’s right in front of the action at the start/finish line, so you won’t miss a thing.”

Free popcorn will be available in the beer garden, while White Spot will have a food truck nearby for those feeling a little peckish.

The Pattullo Bridge will be closed to all traffic for three weekends this summer while TransLink carries out repairs. The closures are set for the weekends of July 20-21, Aug. 10-11 and

Aug. 24-25 and run from 9 p.m. on the Friday night until 3 a.m. Monday.

The bridge will also be off limits to pedestrians and bikes.

Crews will repair sections of the concrete deck and repave parts of the 76-year-old bridge.

TransLink will also review the

condition of the driving surface and make improvements as necessary.

Any heavy rain on the three weekends would extend the work to a fourth weekend on Sept. 7-8, TransLink said.

Clark resumes Campbell arrogance

all it the Beach Blanket Budget. Despite having to campaign once again to win a seat in a byelection, Premier Christy Clark has ordered the legislature to sit without her through most of July to pass the budget that was tabled before the election.

This rare summer session ensures a couple of things. First, there will be less time for real financial results to contradict the rosy predictions made by Finance Minister Mike de Jong in February.

Second, it ensures that there will be minimum public attention paid to the deliberations, as people focus on their summer vacations and put the business of running the province aside again.

B.C. Liberal house leader Mike de Jong insists there has been no decision made on whether the legislature will sit again in the fall. The standard schedule, put in place under former premier Gordon Campbell, calls for MLAs to assemble in October and November, to consider legislation, after a spring devoted to the budget and ministry spending.

This was a serious reform that went along with four-year scheduled elections. But Campbell soon abandoned this noble approach, with fall sessions dwindling to a few days to deal with urgent issues or disappearing altogether.

I expected Clark to reverse that after she led the party to victory in May and consigned the Campbell era to the history books. Open, accountable government and all that.

So why the summer session? I’m inclined to agree with NDP house leader John Horgan, who meets privately with de Jong in his role of government house leader to thrash out schedules. Here’s Horgan’s message to Clark and her government as he emerged from the latest meeting: “You ran on a platform that you claimed you were ready to implement. And what we’re getting instead is, ‘let’s jam ’em in here while the media’s on holidays, while people are at the beach thinking about

other things. We’ll pass our bogus budget and then we’ll see you in February’.”

Is the budget accurate, or “bogus,” or somewhere in between? They’re always projections, so that can’t be determined until next year. But the proposal to keep the increase in overall spending to less than two per cent, with nearly all the increase going to health and education, is difficult to accept.

During his time, Campbell topped the Fraser Institute’s ranking of most fiscally responsible premiers, limiting spending growth to 4.4 per cent. During those same years, average provincial economic growth was only 4.1 per cent, meaning that under the supposedly tight-fisted, tax-cutting Campbell, government continued to grow to more than 20 per cent of gross domestic product.

Clark has indicated several times since her surprise election win that she intends to make government smaller. That’s the difference between her “core review” of government programs and the one conducted by Campbell in the painful first years of his mandate.

This is why I mentioned last week that one of the more significant instructions given to Clark’s cabinet ministers was to examine turning the Liquor Distribution Branch into a separate corporation with its own board of directors.

That in itself may slightly increases the size of government. But it could be a preliminary step to selling the whole thing off and reducing the government’s role to taxing and regulating booze sales.

You can imagine how that would go over with the NDP, with former liquor store union boss George Heyman among the loudest opposition MLAs. This is the kind of change that should be debated in public, not by press release.

To have and have not I

t was with a mixture of admiration and pity as I watched South Delta’s young adults go before council last week to plead for a place to stay and live in the community in which they’ve grown up.

Men and women in their twenties and thirties stood at the podium and tried to make the older generation see the reality of today’s “homeless” generation of adults, looking to get into their first home in a market saturated by unaffordable prices.

I can’t help but sympathize. As a 38-year-old, I’ve resigned myself to the fact I’ll never own my own home so long as I live in this part of the world. I can’t help but relate to these young people trying to make their parents and grandparents understand the realities of a 2013 economy.

There’s a running gag on the Internet called a “meme” with the title “old economy Steve.” Give it a Google when you have a chance and you’ll soon see what I mean.

It’s full of sarcastic and ironic little things our parents who grew up in the old economy might say. Things that the older residents of Marina Garden Estates might say.

Their concerns about building heights and density and traffic and noise sounds a lot like a bunch of Steves stuck in the old world to my generation.

What it ultimately comes down to is a difference

of generational perspectives between the haves and the have-nots. The haves, the “Steves,” finished high school and jumped into a well-paying job that lasted 35 years until retirement. During that time Steve flipped his home many times as he upgraded his net worth and rode the housing market to its peak before the collapse.

Sure, Steve met some adversity along the way, as everybody does. But in the end Steve wound up with a retirement property purchased on a lifetime of equity building and savings from jobs that offered him the benefit of seniority.

Welcome to 2013 and the next generation of twenty and thirty-something workers. We didn’t jump from high school into a secure long-term job.

A post-secondary degree isn’t even a guarantee of employment anymore. We’re leaving home later and paying off debt later. Our savings are skimpy and we don’t have homes to put equity into.

To Steve’s generation, the prospect of a 16-footwide townhouse is the end of the neighbourhood and a decline in property values. To our generation the prospect of owning a 16-foot townhouse is a dream-come-true and a chance to own a tiny piece of a nation that is rapidly disowning its children.

Listen to the kids. Give them a chance to stay where they grew up.

Letters to the editor Hardship provisions protect those who cannot afford wheelchair fees Re: “New wheelchair fees for care home seniors slammed,” South Delta Leader, June 21, 2013.

I would like to take this opportunity to respond to statements Vicki Huntington has made about wheelchair maintenance fees.

Ms. Huntington states health authorities have “no idea of actual costs” and maintenance fees have been “simply pulled out of the air.” Comments like these only serve to promote anxiety amongst our senior population and those who care for them.

Costs to maintain wheelchairs and other equipment can vary greatly depending on a variety of factors including the type of equipment and how much they are used.

Residential care clients who need wheelchairs spend most of their waking hours in those chairs and, the money raised from the monthly fee covers only a portion of the actual cost of maintaining, repairing and replacing aging wheelchairs.

Ms. Huntington also failed to make it clear that no vulnerable senior citizen will be denied a wheelchair if they cannot afford the maintenance fee.

Health authorities have hardship provisions in place for any client who is unable to purchase or rent wheelchairs, depending on their income status.

As I have mentioned before, the public health care system covers the cost of medical care in publicly-subsidized residential care homes, and those who can afford to cover the cost of their personal equipment, do so.

Our government will continue to make caring for those who cared for us a high priority, and that includes building a sustainable health-care system for all generations.

RCMP are not above the law Re: “RCMP Criticism Unwarranted,” South Delta Leader, Letters to the Editor, June 28, 2013.

It is amazing to me how Mr. Bopp correlates the pride all Canadians feel for the RCMP with the undisputed incompetence of a handful of its members!

He seems to ignore the video which shows how the officers repeatedly zapped a man ‘’armed’’ with a stapler, who raises his arms, clearly not threateningly, but backing up to show he’s giving up.

Thankfully, he’s the only person I’ve heard disputing the video proof !

When you fail to plan, you plan to fail A

long with the rest of the country, I watched as the city of Calgary was devastated by flash floods last month. I followed the disaster with a heavy heart because I was born and raised in Alberta and I have many friends and family there.

What stood out for me as an outside observer was the collective spirit of Calgarians as they came together as a community to help each other. There are countless stories of people helping people and there was an outpouring of volunteer support to start rebuilding the city before the waters had even receded.

I am sure that most of us look to our own geography and wonder if and when the same type of natural disaster will affect us. Flooding, particularly in our low-lying areas of Ladner and Tsawwassen is a risk that we live with every spring.

The police, along with other first responders and the Corporation of Delta have extensive disaster plans in place to help our citizens in case of an emergency. Specially trained Emergency Planners design and maintain plans that are practiced through scenario based training and table-top exercises. First responders are here for the community – ready to fall into action if a disaster were to occur.

While we are ready on a city-wide level to respond to an emergency, individuals and families need to work together in neighbourhood units to be prepared. We all need to ask ourselves a number of questions; Do we have family plans in place? Do we have food, water and other stores to last at least 72 hours? What happens if we’re not home and we have

family members, particularly our children and elderly parents, looking for us? What about the safety of our pets? Are we prepared to work together with our neighbours in a state of emergency?

A key to being prepared in our homes is to know our neighbours. If an emergency is large-scale, we may be cut off from the outside world for days and we will turn to each other for emotional and physical support.

Delta Police Community Police Stations, in partnership with the Corporation of Delta and Delta Fire & Emergency Services, run the Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program (NEPP) which touches on a number of components for personal safety including fire suppression, first aid, urban search and rescue and rapid damage assessment.

This training is facilitated by qualified volunteers at no cost. The small investment of your time can mean the difference between life and death.

As we continue to watch Calgary rebuild from its devastating floods, we can take a lesson; that human compassion and resolve are what make a community strong.

I have no doubt that the communities of Delta would respond the same way in a time of crisis. We must all be prepared not only for ourselves, but for those around us. And as the old adage goes: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

I love that massive, incredible old oak tree. I am enraged and heartbroken watching Delta’s character, heritage, and natural world being stripped away and replaced by cookie-cutter residential houses, mega malls, freeways, industrial structures and ports while this community simply throws up their hands and says “Oh well, you can’t stop progress.”

This is not progress, it’s greed, and we can stop it - as a community that cares and takes action.

The only thing that progresses as our heritage, character, agricultural land and natural habitat gets swallowed up and destroyed are the developer’s and corporation’s bank accounts. The rest of us are left with congestion, pollution, and broken communities. Truly progressive growth benefits the greater good of all: the water, the land, the air, the plants and trees, the wildlife, and finally the humans who depend on

all of the aforementioned to survive as a species. The earth is a closed system, and the way we are using our resources is not sustainable.

Forests and clean water sources are dwindling, species are dying off, and extreme weather and natural disasters are now a regular occurrence.

Wake up! Why are we willingly allowing our community and our world to be destroyed just to benefit a few? Why do we believe that success means to destroy the old to make way for the new, and that newer is better? Why have we bought into the idea that turning a profit at any and all cost is the only way to live? What will it take for the message to sink in that there are no lives on a dead planet, never mind jobs!

We have a choice, we can shift our priorities and break the cycle of consumer driven ecocide. We can choose not to shop at the big box stores to buy toxic, cheap products imported from China via Deltaport that will quickly break and end up in Delta’s swollen garbage dump to contaminate our soil, air, and wa-

ter. We can choose to live with less and invest in quality items made by people in our own community that will last for many years like our grandparents did. Guess what, they still “make them like they used to,” you just have to create the demand with your choices. We can maintain and protect our heritage sites, natural spaces, and agricultural lands by redeveloping poorly designed and sprawling subdivisions to densify for a growing population. We can cultivate joy through authentic human connection in our community, not temporary highs brought on by acquiring more “stuff.”

People of Delta, please stand up for the heritage, agricultural land, natural habitat, and gorgeous, magnificent old oak trees in your community. The community we value should not be taken away for the financial gain of a few. Redefine progress and success for yourself and make choices that benefit the greater good.

Holly Park in Ladner will soon have a new bike park that will welcome riders of all ages and experience levels.

Delta council approved a $15,000 budget to the parks and recreation department to build a bike pump track in a vacant lot in Holly Park west of the soccer field by Ladner Trunk Road.

A pump track is a manmade closed circuit made up of berms (mounds) shaped from earth. A rider uses momentum to “pump” speed into the bike and then rolls through the course with minimal pedaling. Using the same physical principles as a swing, the rider pulls up on the bike as he or she crests a roller and then pushes back once past it to continue on.

Brett Armstrong of the Watershed Bike Club, responsible for the creation and maintenance of mountain bike trails within Watershed Park in North Delta, said it will be a multi-use bike park where children and adults alike can ride without fear of traffic.

“I’ve been talking with Delta about this parcel of land for at least five to eight years but it’s just finally come to fruition for everybody,” he said, adding things are still early in the planning phase.

Armstrong said cycling is a growing recreational activity for many families, since it’s largely free after the initial investment.

“It’s a great way to get exercise, push yourself physically, from many different aspects, whether it’s conquering a new section of trail or climbing over the top of that hill that you never thought you’d make it up and over,” he said.

The pump track will have sections of various difficulty levels allowing riders

of all skill levels to have fun, explained Armstrong. He believes the course they design will appeal to all kinds of riders, from BMX cruisers to mountain bikers and everything in between.

Some of the $15,000 will go toward numerous infrastructure projects in Holly Park prior to construction. These include drainage work, asphalt trails leading to the park, and a water source, which will be needed to keep the soil moist in the summer.

Delta will also purchase a factory-made curved wall ride for $8,000. Preliminary drawings show a wall ride, a roller snake line, a teeter totter, a beginner and kids pump track and a long pump track, though Armstrong said these could be subject to change.

As well, the course will be set 25 metres from the subdivision to the west and about the same distance from Ladner Trunk to ensure safety and noise concerns are properly addressed.

When ready, Delta will transport and drop the dirt and then Armstrong said his club will sculpt the dirt by hand.

“You can’t do all this work just with the machine,” he said. “You need to be on top of it with a shovel. It’s going to take a lot of work to do.”

Meanwhile, another member of the Watershed Bike Club wants to get a pump track installed in Tsawwassen in a BC Hydro right-of-way at Pebble Hill Park. Eric Wong, a graduate of the Capilano University Mountain Bike Operations Program, approached Delta about the idea earlier in the year.

Currently there’s a small dirt jump park at Pebble Hill but Delta staff are concerned about the unsafe nature of the apparatus which has been set up by youth mainly on an ad hoc basis.

The annual Tour de Delta is a sure sign that summer is in full swing with the sights of cyclists filling Delta’s streets riding by in a colourful blur.

This is Delta’s 13th year of the event and given that it’s also the year 2013 event organizers said they wanted to do something special by making the men’s road race 13 laps.

“If you do see somebody with an upside-down 13 on their jersey please don’t think that that’s being disrespectful to the organization or any other group, but that is trying to turn it around so that it becomes lucky,” said race organizer Mark Ernsting, smiling.

A former elite cyclist, Ernsting is excited about the fact that this year’s men’s race in Tsawwassen is a UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) sanctioned event, which will be recognized by the international body that governs professional bicycle racing.

“That is quite important because it is the only one in B.C., and also for the future as a consecutive event,” said Ernsting, adding he’d like to see the Tour de Delta become a permanent home for the international cycling tour.

“Tour de Delta came about to provide the opportunity for provincial-level athletes to experience

world-class competition,” said Ernsting, who was himself a competitive cyclist from 1993 to 2004 and a sixtime Canadian national champion.

Making this a UCI event is the “next step” in that process, since it allows cyclists and their teams to earn points toward international rankings. This can be especially important for determining how many riders will be on the starting line for each country at the Olympics. Canada only had one rider on the starting line in London because there weren’t enough Canadians competing in UCI events.

“This is a very good opportunity for us to gain these points as Canadian athletes because we’ll have a higher percentage of Canadian athletes being in this international event,” he said.

The event has attracted significant international interest for its first year. Two German teams will compete, including their national team which was ranked ninth in the world in 2012. Riders from dozens of other countries are also registered.

Spectators can look forward to seeing many of Canada’s top cyclists, including Zach Bell, a two-time Olympian who recently finished first at the Men’s Elite Canadian Road Championships in St-Georges, Que. on June 22. Curtis Dearden, Canada’s national time trial champion, Christian Meier,

coming off the Giro d’Italia event last year, and Will Routley from Whistler, a former Canadian champion currently riding with a Belgian team, will also race.

For the women, Joelle Numainville, the current national time trial champion, will be in the White Spot Delta Road Race on July 7, a seven-lap, 81.41 kilometre circuit.

Ernsting is hoping the UCI event will be so successful that it will be offered to the women as well for 2014.

“It would be the only UCI women’s event in North America,” he said,

adding that would bring tremendous attention and coverage to Delta.

Those who are used to the Tour de Delta circuit are in for a treat. It’s been redesigned to engage the community more by making it visible to families living in residential areas. The route will no longer run along 56th Street, instead staying west of 54th Street, and spanning the breathtaking vistas along English Bluff Road ( full maps are available in this issue of the South Delta Leader).

Delta Lands Criterium, featuring a women’s and men’s pro race, a non-competitive Kids Criterium, and a community festival at nearby Richardson Elementary.

Then on Saturday (July 6) the Brenco Criterium in Ladner features a Youth Race for 12- to 15-year-olds, a men’s amateur race (category 3/4), and a women’s (professional 1/2/3) and men’s (professional 1/2) race.

Rick Richardson knows just about everything there is to know about the auto body business, which not surprising considering he practically grew up in his father’s shop.

While the technology has changed over the years, good customer service has always been a top priority at Ladner Auto Body.

Ladner Auto Body was recently awarded the AutocheX Premier Achiever Award for outstanding customer service for the third

straight year. The shop is one of just 15 in the province to receive the honour, and the only one to have won it three-years running.

AutocheX is a third party company that measures customer satisfaction levels for body shops through surveys.

Scores are based on criteria such as the shop’s ability to keep customers informed, provide on time deliveries and provide efficient, safe and quality repairs.

For Rick, the award is a sign that he and his staff are still doing things right.

“Trust is a hard thing to

build,” he says.

He learned that lesson from his father, Stan Richardson, who opened Ladner Auto Body in 1977. 13-year-old Rick would spend his afternoons pushing a broom, washing cars, and running errands.

In 1982 Rick graduated high school and started working at the shop full-time.

“That’s when my real education began,” he says.

Rick runs the shop now, and despite the many changes in the industry, he and his staff are still on the cutting edge.

Some things haven’t changed, however. Namely, how to treat your customers right. For Rick, that means making sure customers get

their vehicle back on the road right away, and experience as little stress as possible.

And if he happens to see other dents or scratches, he’ll buff it out and fix it up, free of charge.

“We all know what cars cost today,” Rick says. “Families can’t afford to be without their car, so when it’s in a crash, we want to make [the process] as smooth and unstressful as possible.”

Long before she became the marketing director for UsedEverywhere. com, Lacey Sheardown was a borderline-obsessive user of the classifieds site.

“I was always on there — I was an avid user,” she says with a laugh.

Her Victoria home is filled with furniture and other unique items she bought or found for free on UsedEverywhere. “So when I got this job, my friends were like, ‘Yeah, that makes sense.’”

But what drew Sheardown to the site was more than the satisfaction of treasure hunting. Unlike other classifieds sites out there, this was a place where she could look for a new coffee table without stumbling across an ad for a casual NSA encounter at the local park.

“We’re actually family friendly,” she says. Across more than 80 cities and towns, the site has a real, live monitoring team, checking ads every hour of the day, ensuring quality content and dependable transactions. “Your kid can surf our site and you can be comfortable with it.”

UsedEverywhere.com is now owned by Black Press. It has as many unique visitors in Canada as Craig’s List and is the number one

free classified site in Ottawa, Victoria and PEI. The site includes an informative blog and Facebook page.

As much as the site is about buying and selling, it’s also about connecting people, building community, on and off-line, with a flesh-and-blood UsedEverywhere community coordinator working locally.

Following the flooding in Alberta, the site encouraged Albertans to donate items for flood victims on its four sites in the province: UsedCalgary.com, UsedRedDeer.com, UsedCentralAlberta.com and UsedEdmonton.com.

In Vancouver, you might find the community coordinator at the farmer’s markets or most recently at the Vancouver Children’s Festival where UsedEverywhere was a major sponsor. They are also involved with projects such as a car and booster seat recycling program that took place last month (they recycled 83 expired seats) as well as a new initiative in the next month to work with local business, allowing them to advertise on the site and connect with buyers.

Their community coordinators even look for personal opportunities to help locally through the Angels program. Last year, for instance, they helped a Vancouver woman undergoing chemotherapy

for breast cancer by finding breast milk for her baby.

Sheardown says community involvement is a big component of the company’s DNA. “It’s a social responsibility,” she says. “Our site is about reusing, reducing and recycling and so being a part of the community and helping in other ways is connected that.”

Even though the site has been embraced mostly by professional mothers like Sheardown, she says it appeals to other demographics as well.

“My husband is on his site, on his phone, hitting refresh every 10 minutes,” she says laughing. “We think he has a bit of a problem.”

So what’s the coolest thing she got on UsedEverywhere?

It’s a large stereo cabinet that was brought over from Europe after the Second World War. “They had the clothes on their backs, 20 bucks and this giant, enormous stereo cabinet. And we got it for free!”

It’s the bonus of hearing a story or meeting new people that Sheardown appreciates about using the site.

“There’s always history with the item or you meet an interesting person,” she says. “Hearing those stories is great.”

ne of the cyclists to watch closely in this year’s Tour de Delta is Kingston native Annie Foreman-Mackey, who has made great strides in her two years of professional racing.

Coming off a recent first place win at the Preston Criterium in June, the 21-year-old has made rapid progress during her short time in the sport.

One of Canada’s most notable marine artists has produced two more commemorative coins for the Royal Canadian Mint.

Tsawwassen’s John Horton sketched the design for the coins after the Mint put out a request for submissions earlier in the year.

The first coin is 40mm in diameter and commemorates the 300th Anniversary of the French Fortress of Louisbourg, a National Historic Site of Canada located on Cape Breton Island.

The second one depicts a naval battle between the HMS Shannon and the USS Chesapeake during the War of 1812. The Battle of Boston Harbor was actually fought on June 1, 1813, during which time the American ship was captured and 252 men killed or wounded in a bloody 15-minute-long cannon battle between the powerful frigates.

“They’re fun to do,” said Horton about sketching the coin designs.

“They’re really challenging because you’re sometimes dealing with history you don’t know too much about. The fun

Two Surrey residents accused of planting pressure cooker bombs outside the B.C. legislature on Canada Day are described by police as “Al-Qaeda-inspired” but “self-radicalized.”

B.C. RCMP arrested John Stewart Nuttall and Amanda Marie Korody in Abbotsford at 2 p.m.

Monday afternoon after a five-month investigation that began in February.

The alleged homegrown terror plot is similar to that of the Boston Marathon bombers, who used pressure cooker bombs to send shrapnel through the crowd near the race’s finish line on April 15. RCMP seized what they are call-

ing three “improvised explosive devices” that were made from pressure cookers that contained nails, bolts, nuts and washers and were placed outside the legislature in Victoria.

Nuttall, 38, and Korody, 29, are charged with making or possessing an explosive device, conspiracy to commit an indictable

offence, and knowingly facilitating terrorist activity.

“These individuals were inspired by Al-Qaeda ideology,” RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malitzia said. “Our investigation has determined this was a domestic threat without international linkages.”

The alleged motive of

the two accused is not clear. Police wouldn’t discuss any connection to Islamic beliefs or religion, but landlords in north Surrey described them as

devout Muslim converts whose unstable behaviour was alarming enough to prompt calls to police.

Malizia referred to the pair’s activity as “self-radicalized behaviour”.

“When I refer to radicalized or self-radicalized, it is radicalized to violence, so taking violent acts with a specific ideology in place,” said Malizia. “In this case here, the ideology had to do with a criminal act, wanting to pursue criminal act on behalf of an organization that they believed in, and that organization and the ideology

behind that organization as you know it is the al-Qaida ideology.”

The RCMP says the pair “took steps to build explosive devices and place them at the British Columbia Legislature in Victoria where crowds were expected to gather on Canada Day.” The legislative lawn and inner harbour were crowded with an estimated 40,000 revelers for Monday’s Canada Day concert and fireworks.

Police aren’t saying if undercover officers were working with the duo but

Malitzia said they were being closely monitored and police ensured the bombs were inert and could not detonate.

“While the RCMP believed this threat was real, at no time was the security of the public at risk,” Malitzia said. “We detected the threat early and disrupted it.”

A neighbour of a Surrey man and a woman charged with terrorism-related offences this week called the police some time ago after hearing the man threatening to blow things up.

On Monday, at about 2 p.m., B.C. RCMP arrested John Stewart Nuttall and Amanda Marie Korody in Abbotsford after a five-month investigation that began in February.

It’s believed the pair was planning to set off bombs at the legislature in Victoria during the Canada Day celebrations on July 1.

suite in a home in the 9700-block of 120 Street.

Neighbours say Nuttall seemed unstable.

“I reported him once,” said Charlene Thompson. “He was wandering up and down the street in the middle of the night, like 2 o’clock in the morning, yelling into his cellphone about blowing things up... saying he was prepared to do whatever he had to do to get to the afterlife.”

The police came, she said, and that was the last they heard of it.

A few weeks ago, a moving van left parked by the suite was believed to be leaking dangerous gases, but was later determined to be benign.

The neighbouring homes were evacuated for a day while police investigated.

“The suspects were committed to acts of violence and discussed a wide variety of targets and techniques,” said RCMP Assistant Commissioner Wayne Rideout, adding they were “ self-radicalized” and aimed to cause “maximum impact to Canadian citizens at the B.C. Legislature on a national holiday.”

A variety of covert investigation methods were used to control any method the suspects had to commit harm, he added.

Rideout said the bombs are believed to have been made in Surrey and at other locations in B.C. “As these devices were constructed we were in very tight control,” he said. “We were confident that public risk was absolutely minimized.”

Korody has no prior criminal charges, but Nuttall was convicted of robbery in 2003 in Victoria and received an 18-month conditional sentence and a 10-year firearms ban. In March 2010, he was con-

Mayor Dianne Watts said Tuesday the pair moved around the region quite fluidly, from Delta, to Vancouver to Surrey.

She couldn’t say whether the pair had substance abuse issues.

“I can’t confirm that. I know that they had significant challenges in their life,” Watts said.

She also understands they gathered much of their information about what they were doing

from the Internet.

Watt believes it wasn’t a highly developed plan.

“I think they’re fairly

unsophisticated,” Watts said.

Nuttal and Korody made a brief appear-

ance in Surrey Provincial Court on Monday.

Their next appearance is scheduled for July 9.

When they began renting the unit, they were not Muslim, he added.

That was something they took up later.

They were devout, he said, noting there were daily prayers and frequent visits to a mosque, with him growing a long beard and her often wearing a burka, a full body cloak worn by some Muslim women.

While they seemed pleasant, the landlord felt they may have had some mental challenges, and that Nuttall seemed to have trouble walking.

Metro mayors oppose transit funding referendum New transportation minister vows voters will ‘get a say’ ❙ Jeff Nagel reporter newsroom@southdeltaleader.com

Metro Vancouver mayors are pressing the provincial government to abandon its promise to hold a referendum on any plan to raise more money for TransLink through new taxes or tolls.

There are no details yet on how the province intends to tackle the pledge, which was contained in the BC Liberals’ election platform and reinforced during the campaign by Premier Christy Clark.

“The demand for public transit service is growing more rapidly than Translink is currently funded to accommodate, and we do not feel a referendum is the best means to resolving the issue,” Metro Vancouver mayors’ council chair Richard Walton said.

Mayors debated the topic behind closed doors at a meeting June 19 and passed a unanimous resolution formally opposing a referendum on new funding tools for TransLink.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie is one of the Metro mayors who think it’s a recipe for disaster and the issue is too complex to be left to voters.

They argue a defeat of new funding sources by tax-hating voters would doom Metro Vancouver to a stagnant transit system for decades with rapid transit expansion frozen, while the population grows and congestion worsens.

“I think the referendum is a terrible idea and it should be reconsidered,” Brodie said. “We believe it’s a short-sighted, un-

wise decision.”

Metro mayors have suggested options that could be invoked quickly – like an annual vehicle levy, a share of the carbon tax or even a small regional sales tax. Over the longer term they also want to pursue road pricing, which could bring congestion control advantages as well as new cash, but would require years of study and preparation.

Most mayors think voters are apt to vote ‘No’ out of a kneejerk response, without contemplating the downside of failing to expand transit, or understanding potential traffic flow benefits from road tolls.

The mayors’ resolution also warns a referendum could be very divisive.

“If the most expensive improvements are south of the Fraser, the people elsewhere in the region will understand they have very little to personally gain from the funding and they won’t approve it,” Brodie said. “It will divide the whole region and if it fails we’ll be farther behind than we ever were.”

He said the premier and minister must show leadership on the issue and not use the promised plebiscite as a way to dodge a difficult challenge.

“A referendum is simply a way to avoid responsibility,” Brodie said. “Yes, the people are unhappy with extra taxes or levies for anything. But an expanded public transportation system is critical to the environmental goals

New Transportation Minister Todd Stone said he looks forward to meeting the mayors soon but said the government has no intention of ditching the referendum commitment.

“I want to be very clear to the mayors and the people of the Lower Mainland, there will be referendum on any new funding options, period,” Stone said in an interview.

“Let’s sit down, let’s roll up our sleeves and figure out what would be the most appropriate question for this referendum.”

During the provincial election campaign, former Transportation Minister Mary Polak suggested the referendum might force voters to choose some new funding tool for TransLink from a menu of options – none-of-theabove wouldn’t be a permitted outcome – but Premier Christy Clark swiftly rejected that notion.

Stone said the province will ensure taxpayers “have a say in any new funding options” but

struck a more cautious note than Clark, refusing to go so far as to guarantee voters an ability to outright veto any extra transit funding.

“My vision of this is still forming,” he said, adding he doesn’t want to prejudge the discussions to come. “There are many different ways we could come at this question.”

Stone also said the province will introduce TransLink governance reform legislation in the spring of 2014 to give mayors more say in spending priorities.

As a minister from Kamloops, Stone said he brings no axe to grind on behalf of any one part of the region.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to hit the reset button and come to the table and have a frank and open discussion.”

TransLink is updating its long-range Transportation 2045 plan, which puts more emphasis on road pricing as a tool to raise money and control congestion.

By fall it’s to draw up a 15-year plan of proposed new investments.

The Pittsburgh Penguins made 18-year-old Tsawwassen goaltender Tristan Jarry their top draft pick at the 2013 NHL draft on Sunday.

Jarry was selected in the second round, 44th overall by the Penguins, after the club traded up to acquire him.

Pittsburgh sent the second-round draft pick (50th overall) it had acquired earlier in the day from the San Jose Sharks along with a thirdround selection (89th overall) to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for the pick used to take Jarry.

Jarry was the No. 3-ranked North American goaltender by NHL Central Scouting, and was rated as the No. 2 overall goaltender available by both Red Line Report and International Scouting Services. Red Line ranked Jarry as the 36th-best player available.

The 6-foot-1, 178-pound Jarry split

netminding duties with the Edmonton Oil Kings this season with Laurent Brossoit. Jarry had a goals against average of 1.61 in 27 games last season, leading the Western Hockey League. Jarry’s .936 save percentage was also tops in the league, while his six shutouts were tied for second-most in the WHL. “I think I’m more of a hybrid,” Jarry says of his goaltending style. “I’m not always one to go down, but when I do go down, I like to control my rebounds. I’ve been called Marty Brodeur in practice a couple times when I stand up and make a glove save, so I think that’s pretty funny.”

Jarry was named the Team Cherry Player of the Game at the CHL Top Prospects Game earlier this season, stopping all 16 shots he faced.

In two seasons with the Oil Kings, Jarry has appeared in 41 career regular-season games, going 26-9-1 with a 2.03 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage.

Jarry grew up in Tsawwassen and attended South Delta Secondary, where he was a part of the school’s hockey academy.

The Delta Islanders Junior A lacrosse club traded their top two scorers last week in a massive deal with the New Westminster Salmonbellies.

The Islanders parted ways with Cody Nass and Eli McLaughlin on Thursday, who lead the B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League in scoring with 109 and 95 points, respectively.

McLaughlin has 214 points in 72 games at the Junior A level, and leads the league with 57 goals this season.

Nass is the top-scoring rookie in the league this year with 37 goals in 18 games for the Islanders. As a call-up last season, Nass registered 36 points in 17 regular season and playoff games.

In return, the Islanders picked up roster players Ryan Vogrig and Jake Carey, as well as a host of prospects, including the Junior A playing rights to Quinn MacKay and Wyatt Kinna, and the Intermediate A and Junior A playing rights to Connor McKay. The Islanders also pick up New West’s first and third round draft picks in the 2014 BCJALL Junior Entry Draft, and the first and second round draft picks in the 2015

Nass and McLaughlin played their final game in Islanders colours last Wednesday as they helped lead the team to a 13-6 win over the Nanaimo Timbermen at home.

McLaughlin had four goals and four assists in the win, while Nass managed a pair of goals and an assist.

Nass and McLaughlin wasted no time making an impact for the Salmonbellies, as they appeared in two games for New West last

weekend. Nass had eight assists in the two games, while McLaughlin had five goals and two assists.

The Islanders weren’t done trading however, as they acquired the Junior A playing rights of Langley resident Chase Fraser in exchange for Danny McDermott on Sunday.

The Islanders are 11-8 this season with two regular season games left to play. Delta has long since clinched a playoff berth, and currently sits tied for fourth place in the BCJALL.

Local lax players picked for elite program

Delta’s own Jared Beaton, Parker Johnson, and Eric Kalmbach have been picked for the Burnaby Mountain Selects elite field lacrosse program. Beaton and Johnson will be playing for the sophomore squad this summer, while Kalmbach will be playing for the freshman team.

The Burnaby Mountan Selects were established in 2006 using the same template as a university lacrosse program, designed to train players in a high performance environment to best prepare them for a collegiate field lacrosse career.

Over the course of the summer season, the Selects practice on-field twice-a-week, with an additional three hours of weekly study hall for high school aged student-athletes until the end of the school year.

The travelling all-star squad is one of Canada’s top field lacrosse development programs, and offers players the chance to compete at the top NCAA scouting tournaments south of the border. In total, 81 student-athletes from across B.C. and Washington State will represent the Selects at top tournaments in Colorado, Indiana and Maryland this summer.

The sophomore and freshman teams will be travelling to South Bend, Indiana, home to the University of Notre Dame, July 4-8, to compete at the Irish Experience Team Camp.

Thomas (Tom) William Goode passed away peacefully at age 91 in Ladner, British Columbia on June 27, 2013.

Tom is survived by his loving spouse and life mate Lily of 70 years; three children Marlene (spouse George), Jan and Wayne; grandchildren Tracey (Colin), Keith (Jennifer), David (Caroline), Thomas (fiancé Rebecca), Hailey (Jeremy) and greatgrandchildren Brittany, Calvin, Reanne, Haydn, Elizabeth, Kieran and Benjamin.

Tom grew up in South Vancouver and was a veteran of the 2nd World War serving in the Canadian Navy from 1939 to 1945 supporting convoy crossings of the North Atlantic and D-day.

Tom became an Electrician after the war, raised his a family in Vancouver, Edmonton and Tsawwassen, and retired after 40 years service, working for Neon Products - Jim Pattison Sign Company.

Tom was active in the local community of Tsawwassen, British Columbia becoming the first President of the Boundary Blue Back Swim Club and later President of the Phoenix Senior's Club, a member of the Artist Guild, the Ham Radio Club and a volunteer for Delta Assist (Life Line).

Tom will be remembered most for his strong sense of family and an unwavering commitment to fairness in the community and the world. Though not particularly religious, he was spiritual by nature and commented often as to "how there must be something out there ultimately responsible for all the beauty in this world".

A private, immediate family only, Service will be held on July 3rd, 2013. A “Celebration of Life” for extended family and friends is planned for early August (venue and date will be announced).

In lieu of flowers please direct donations to the Cancer Society or the Heart Fund and/or the Salvation Army.
