Eliminate the use of paper towels. A staggering 14 billion pounds of paper towels are used by North Americans every year – that’s around 140 million trees for single-use paper towels. number of volunteers. The province also applied lessons learned from the wildfires in Slave Lake that wiped out about 400 homes in May 2011, when more than 7,000 people were evacuated.

“We got up and running faster than anyone could imagine because we have experience from the Slave Lake wildfires,” Griffiths said.

“We have learned from Slave Lake.”

While the worst of the emergency and severe weather appeared to be finished, the work is a long-term process.

“We’re getting the situation under control,” said Griffiths, who expected relief to begin Friday. “It will be a long-term process, with about eight to 10 years of rebuilding.”

While many people have described the flood crisis as “surreal,” he said it’s like the death of a loved one, and could take some people a long time to grieve.

Three people died in southern Alberta in flood-related deaths in the devastation.

As he joined fellow Albertans in the flood response, Griffiths cancelled a scheduled trip to England for a mission on social and affordable housing.

Alberta’s worst flooding in history over Calgary and southern parts of the province has created havoc for thousands of people, including Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths, the Bashaw-area MLA. As a leader in the provincial response to the disaster, the Battle River-Wainwright MLA’s absence from home has also taken toll on his wife, Sue, and sons Austin, 7, and Brady, 4.

“The funniest thing happened the other day when Austin told Sue, ‘Mom, I really miss Dad,’ and then Brady said, ‘Me, too, let’s turn on the TV,’ ” Griffiths said last Thursday.

Griffiths and Premier Alison Redford have had media briefings and flood tours in Calgary and High River, the community evacuated entirely because of the late-June flooding. High River’s mayor, Emile Blokland, is a former Stettler town councillor.

Awake around the clock after the floods hit June 21, and quickly spread, Griffiths has been working with emergency and municipal and federal officials, along with Redford, to help manage the aftermath.

“This is an unprecedented disaster around the province,” Griffiths said in an interview with the Independent while he was stationed in High River, where more than 13,000 people were evacuated in the hardest-hit area.

That was also a volatile area last week as frustrated residents wanted to return to their homes, but authorities advised them that the flood zone was still off limits. By the weekend, some of them were permitted to return home to begin the long cleanup process.

During the disaster and recovery, 26 municipalities were directly impacted and many Albertans pitched in with support.

“We have offers of support and help from all corners of the province,” Griffiths said.

With few clothes and not much time to do laundry, he said some people donated clothing to him.

“Everyone is working around the clock as best as they can,” said Griffiths, a former MLA for the CastorCoronation area and a former teacher at Byemoor School, south of Stettler.

As waters continued to recede and evacuated people were allowed to return to their homes, the operation flowed more quickly than expected in Calgary, with an overwhelming

“My uncle and aunt in High River had to be evacuated from their home in a front-end loader,” said Devon McMann of Stettler.

With his uncle more than 85 years old and his aunt a few years younger, the emotional upheaval was tense as emergency personnel quickly evacuated homes.

“I could imagine myself getting picked up in an front-end loader, let alone my uncle and aunt,” McMann said.

“He said they had only a few minutes to get out.”

As the family historian, his uncle has an extensive collection of history, McMann said.

“We’re not sure if the family history was lost or not.”

Fortunately, the elderly couple was taken in by nearby relatives.

McMann’s niece from Montreal was also stranded in Calgary when she arrived to perform at the Sledfest music event, which was

cancelled.

“She told us that the view from her hotel room, it was just water everywhere,” McMann said.

“It was crazy, we had so much connection to the flood.”

Gayle Thoun had travelled to Calgary for a medical appointment that was cancelled when her doctor from flood-ridden Canmore was also stranded.

“It was just a minor inconvenience for me, but not for so many other people,” Thoun said. “So many people lost everything.

“It’s one of those things that you see in the movies or on television, and you think it will never happen to you.

It did — and we will have more of these situations.”

One couple that experienced the flood first-hand in Calgary visited Stettler this past weekend.

“It brought the whole city together,” said Virgil Epp, who with his wife Joy were in Stettler to visit their son Brad, associate pastor of Stettler Alliance Church.

“We were safe on high ground in northwest Calgary, but we have lots of friends and family directly affected,” Joy said.

Residents responded quickly to help and support those displaced, she said.

“You can see that in the high level of volunteering. People didn’t wait to

have to be told what to do or get organized. They just put on gloves and boots and they helped wherever it was needed.”

They even saw some people put a barbecue in the back of a pickup truck and go to areas to serve burgers and hotdogs to volunteers and residents.

Like many businesses did, Joy Epp’s employer raised $1,200 to buy groceries and cleaning supplies.

One large building supply store also packed truckloads of supplies and stopped around the town to allow people to help themselves to whatever they needed to clean up, Virgil Epp said.

Clearview, East Central boards fail to reach busing co-operation LES STULBERG Independent reporter Clearview School Division announced last week that the East Central Alberta Catholic Schools board plans to continue its own busing system, thereby nixing plans for a co-operative bus schedule.

At its meeting last Thursday, the Clearview board expressed disappointment that an agreement won’t be reached in time for school this fall. The trustees, however, remain hopeful a joint agreement can be reached in the future.

The inefficiencies of running two busing systems have been criticized at the so-called community consultation meetings this year.

Stettler’s ECACS trustee, Chris Nichols, said that board took the issue to a public meeting in June.

“We wanted to make sure our stakeholders had some say,” Nichols said.

He said there are still some things that need to be clarified with the Clearview board.

Special-education cuts Director of student services Eileen Johnstone presented the annual special education report to the Clearview board.

With less funding from Alberta Education for special education, the family school liaison and other services will be reduced in the 2013-14 school year, Johnstone said.

“We are so short of money, it’s going to be a real stretch.”

She said funding for family school liaison has been cut by eight per cent.

New man in town Clearview’s new associate superintendent of business and finance has arrived.

Peter Neale has been on the job since last Tuesday.

Neale said he’s already impressed with Stettler, saying “it has a lot to offer.”

After touring William E. Hay Composite High School, Neale said he has worked for larger school divisions that didn’t have such facilities.

Neale has also been appointed returning officer for the Clearview trustees elections in October.

Neale takes over from Lewis Hill.

Big Valley briefing Four Big Valley students in grades 5 to 8 — Daniel Brown, Jessie Armstrong, Raina Thomson and Brandon Sukkau — gave a presentation on their BP Energy Literacy Project.

This is the third year that Big Valley School has won the $10,000 BP (British Petroleum) grant. The project combined researching energy sources with writing. With the assistance of literary expert Lyle Weis, the school created and published a children’s storybook based on energy sources with a conservation focus. The board was given 10 copies to distribute to its schools.

Stettler-area students gear up for summer break, September return RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter Classes were dismissed last week as Stettler-and-area students began their summer break.

Changes are expected for next year, but principals believe the local schools can continue to offer quality education.

Elementary and middle schools A shared principal position for Stettler Elementary School and Stettler Middle School is planned for the next school year.

“We have excellent staff and fantastic students in both schools, which will make for a smooth transition and operations,” said Sharon Fischer, who adds the elementary school to her middle school role.

“We will continue to offer excellent opportunities and programming for students.”

With 300 students projected for the middle school (grades 6 to 8) and 550 elementary students (kindergarten to Grade 5), Fischer will oversee about 850 students.

For the coming school year, the middle school welcomes new teachers David Teasdale from Stettler Outreach School, while Luke Peters moves down the hall from William

E. Hay Composite High School to teach physical education and Grade 6 language arts and social studies.

Fischer said the current staff at the elementary school would be maintained — for now.

Kindergarten will take on a new look, with parents given the opportunity for the children to be in class for three days a week or for five.

“We want to work with parents to provide the programming that parents want, with relatively small classes,” Fischer said.

After the inaugural year of the Characters in Action program for students was successful, the school want to continue the program that builds the character of students.

Students return to classes on Sept. 3.

High school While enrolment at William E. Hay Composite High School is projected to fall to 522 students from 530 last September, the principal expects few changes on staff.

“Three teachers will not be back next year, while we will have a net loss of one teacher,” said principal Norbert Baharally, who declined to disclose names.

He’s excited to move forward with various projects.

Invited by the National Associa-

tion of Secondary School Principals, math teachers from William E. Hay will be published in the September issue of Principal Leadership magazine.

“It will highlight again the high school’s redesign model, with emphasis on removal of the Carnegie unit,” said Baharally, who has completed seven years as principal and 25 years on staff at William E. Hay. “Imagine There’s No Carnegie Unit” was the title suggested for the article.

Baharally is also grateful that the school plans to continue the student assessment, evaluation and reporting practices.

“We have spent a lot of time reviewing literature and research surrounding best assessment practices over the last three years.

“As a result of our work, our entire staff and school will be continuing to move towards a more formative way of assessing our students in the work that they are doing.”

For the fall, student timetables will also be mailed out in August.

The first day back for grades 11 and 12 students is Sept. 3. Grades 9 and 10 students will return to school on Sept. 4.

Albertans just keep on taking flood risks

By Greg Neiman Black Press columnist Like millions of people who live in cities that have been built along rivers, I live on a floodplain.

There hasn’t been a flood in Red Deer to equal that of Calgary or High River in all our written history. But if you sink a spade just about anywhere on what remains of natural ground in our valley centre, you’ll find evidence that the Red Deer River once flowed there.

I’ve been told that the area where I live, near the base of Michener Hill, was once called the Chinese Garden, for the family-run market garden that for a time was a local landmark.

It’s a good place to have a garden, because there’s no bottom to the topsoil here. It’s all river silt (with patches of gravel) deeper than any basement foundation. My garden makes it look like I know what I’m doing there.

A long time ago, the Red Deer River flowed right below Michener Hill. Over time, it moved slightly north, leaving behind the oxbow lakes in the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary. But while it was moving, it must have flooded many times, leaving behind a legacy of deep fertile silt on a pancake-flat valley bottom.

Good place for a garden, or a town. Right?

Adrian Gordon is the former president and CEO of the non-profit Canadian Centre for Excellence in Emergency Preparedness. The centre just happened to be running an international conference in Toronto this week, becoming the go-to place for journalists looking for perspective on Alberta’s new natural disaster.

The gist of what he and others are telling reporters is this: Canada’s network of public infrastructure, valued at about $1 trillion, is not hardened against natural disaster events that we know have happened in the past, and that we know will happen again.

Think about the ice storm in Quebec a few years back. It downed all the power lines, caused massive blackouts, and hundreds of millions in losses and damage to property.

Quebec responded as we all would — they cleaned up, fixed up, restored the lines. All that new infrastructure is standing there, waiting for the next ice storm — which we know could happen any given year.

The power lines could have been buried, but that was considered too expensive. More costly than replacing them all again, the next time the weather turns ugly?

That observation contains the subtext of what Gordon and other emergency preparedness experts are saying about Calgary. Make that all of the Canadian Prairies.

If 100-year floods now happen every 10 years, why should people like me be allowed to return to our homes on the floodplain?

Insurance companies are asking the same question. They answer it by suggesting they won’t insure homes on floodplains against the kind of flooding nobody even remembers seeing before.

But that doesn’t stop people like me from living in these areas. Biblical-level flooding wasn’t on the radar when we moved here 35 years ago.

Looking at how many people live in the valley, and how many businesses have grown here, it hasn’t been for anyone else, either.

We’ve never had a Calgary-level flood, with muddy water above basement ceilings, enough to make the entire downtown a no-go zone. But as we have seen, that’s not evidence we never will.

Delegates to the Toronto conference have their own data on major disasters around the world. In no case, we are told, are local or national governments completely ready to deal with these events.

In fact, no government anywhere is keeping up with the cost of maintaining infrastructure — roads, bridges, power, water supply — under even normal conditions.

Whatever developments we are making are almost all pay-it-forward, never mind paying for recovery from a multibillion-dollar disaster loss.

Garrington Bridge west of Bowden is just one of thousands of weak links in the transportation chain, in zones where flooding has occurred in the past and where it will probably occur again.

The town of Sundre knows full well how a river can move when the mountains get too much rain all at once.

But would Sundre move? Would Calgary homeowners dealing with a horrible, stinking, muddy mess right now? Would Vancouver, sitting along a geological fault line ripe for an earthquake? Would I? Human nature trumps Mother Nature, at least in the decisions we make.

The Canadian Centre for Excellence in Emergency Preparedness is doing a very good job, but the tide of human nature is as strong as the tides of the Earth.

The best we can expect is that people make decisions, knowing all the risks.

Sharing comfort with others not always easy Our world is at least occasionally visited by loss, tragedy and sorrow. Consequently, we’re in need of being comforted … and bringing comfort to others. But how does this happen?

Comfort, in the biblical sense means to strengthen. When God comforts us or we comfort others there is a strength that is imparted, enabling the hurting person to move through their sorrow in a more positive, healthy fashion.

2 Corinthians 1:3, 4 provides a description of how this works. “We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” God is the source of all comfort, and the comfort that we receive from Him, we in turn are to share with others. But this isn’t always as easy as it might seem.

Joni Erickson Tada, who became a quadriplegic through a swimming accident, tells of two of her girlfriends visiting her in the hospital. As they entered Joni’s room, they were shocked at the sight of their terribly injured friend.

Speechless, they stared awkwardly, then ran out of the room. Joni could hear one of them vomiting and the other sobbing. (Of course, someone should’ve prepared the poor girls for the encounter!

On a positive note, Queen Victoria heard that a commoner had lost her baby.

Most of us struggle with knowing what to say or do ... so sometimes we say nothing and stay away, which is probably the worst of all. While giving respect for a person’s right to privacy, it’s usually good to try to make some sort of contact.

One of my favourite stories is about a little girl who did just that. She came home from the neighbour’s house where her little friend had died.

“Why did you go?” asked her father.

“To comfort my friend’s mother!” she said.

The father, now quite concerned asked, “What could you do to comfort her?” She answered, “I climbed into her lap and cried with her.”

Health firings ‘were all for naught’ The recent firings of the entire Alberta Health Services superboard over the members’ refusal to cancel bonuses to 99 executives left many, including me, wondering what was the purpose of that action.

The board refused to obey Alberta Health Minister Fred Horne’s order to cancel the bonuses for the same reason that Minister Horne is now conceding they will have to pay their contracts.

Those bonuses totalled about $3.2 million, with potential of costing considerably more if the contracts weren’t honoured due to litigation and legal costs.

Bonuses included in

employment contracts for a year completed were expected not to be paid out according to the order.

Shortly after the board firings, in a moment of clarity, the minister conceded that this whole situation was a “legal quagmire.”

Janet Davidson, Stephen Lockwood’s replacement, has also conceded that it could be considered in breach of contract if the bonuses where withheld.

She added that “these employees would be in a position to take legal action” and the final nail saying, “I am advised these employees likely would be successful.”

Before the superboard and Lockwood were unceremoniously fired, they had legally arranged that this would be the last year for executive bonuses.

The intriguing part of the situation is how they arrived at the point where they were required to dole

out bonuses for mediocrity and, in some cases, less than that.

Has AHS set the bar so low that those within a failing system can achieve bonuses merely by showing up for work?

Most people I’ve discussed the health-care system in Alberta with find it very difficult to defend when it comes to its functionality and efficiency.

For most of us, the bo-

nuses are hard to correlate when measured against the overall performance, simply because it appears to be a system that is rewarding failure.

The people within the system are outstanding; it’s the gridlocked system that creates the inefficiencies and waste. The nurses and doctors that are on the front lines aren’t the ones that get the bonuses, even when they go the extra mile and yet they still go that extra mile.

That’s called dedication.

The Wildrose Official Opposition is encouraging government to dismantle Alberta Health Services and gradually decentralize

the delivery of health care to locally-managed and integrated hospitals, primary care networks, family physicians, specialty centres, long-term care facilities, and other health services.

By setting up an advisory panel of front-line health care professionals to meet with the minister every two months to keep the minister apprised of emerging issues, problems can be dealt with in a proactive fashion.

Ultimately, the solutions lie in empowering local decision-makers to determine the course of health-care delivery, based on the individual needs of local patients.

High River: ‘most puzzling flood situation’ Agriculture came out OK after the recent flood in southern Alberta. Clearly, the impact has been severe in Calgary and a number of smaller centres dependent on their proximity to rain-swollen rivers and watersheds.

Individual farms and ranches were affected, but they’re few compared to the physical devastation in residential areas. Our hearts go out to those folks whose lives will be severely altered because of the disaster.

There are photos of thousands of flooded acres in the affected areas and one ponders what the effect will be on crops and pastures. It all depends on how much moisture lies in fields and how long it will take to drain away. Much of the south already had delayed spring seeding, which put emerging crops in a perilous situation for survival. Many may end up being drowned. The next few weeks will tell as crop insurance adjustors begin to make their rounds. A bright spot had been pasture and hay conditions, which for the most part were excellent. A couple of weeks of dry hot weather would do wonders to improve the overall situation for crops and pastures.

No sooner, however, did the flood situation begin to abate than questions, concerns and yes blame were arising from various players. In reality, the flood in the general area is nothing new; four similar and larger floods had occurred during the early years of the 1900s, along with numerous lesser flooding ever since.

Very significant flooding occurred in 1995, 2005 and 2007. During that more than 100-year period, governments took various steps to mitigate future damage from floods — but it never seems to be enough. Suffice to say in many parts of Alberta, floods are part of the hazard of living in those areas.

The most puzzling situation is the High River area, which appears to be the most flood-prone area of Alberta — yet government officials continue to blissfully approve the development of ever more residential subdivisions on obvious flood-plains. The only hope for the future of this town is to build a massive diversionary floodway around the townsite. Otherwise, history will repeat itself — and soon.

The Alberta government has so far pledged $1 billion to recovery and rebuilding. It’s bound to eventually cost a lot more. Most of that money will go to cities and towns, but some will be destined for rural areas particularly infrastructure.

One does wish that government will now think more seriously about spending even more money on floodmitigation projects in flood prone areas — being floods will surely happen again. igation report made in 2006 by former agriculture minister George Groeneveld, who happens to be from the High River area, contained a number of significant flood mitigation recommendations, some of which were acted upon. However the big one about not building houses on flood plains was ignored. That will come back to haunt the government. Opposition political parties have already made some pointed references to that matter.

The High River area is also of particular concern to the cattle business, because it’s home to the Cargill Foods beef-processing plant. The facility itself wasn’t damaged, but it was temporarily closed, mainly because so many of its local employees were made homeless by the flood. Flood damage to area roads and bridges also made transportation logistics and cattle supply something of a nightmare to the plant. Another consequence of the flooding was damage to the CPR mainline, which caused significant delays in the grain and oilseed flow to west coast shipping points.

Climate change activists not unsurprisingly alleged that it was obvious what caused this disaster. Weather experts had a different view, noting that the rain deluge and subsequent flooding had more to do with a unique confluence of stalled weather systems and a subsequent rapid snowmelt.

Be that as it may, I suspect flooding in the area has been a problem for the past 10,000 years. Interestingly climate change, particularly global warming, has been viewed by many as being a positive change for crop production in Alberta. Warmer weather and a longer growing season would increase crop yields and expand the opportunity to grow lucrative corn and soybean crops in

Afghanistan ‘can never win a decisive victory’ History doesn’t exactly repeat itself: the final outcome of the American intervention in Afghanistan won’t be the same as the end result in Vietnam.

But the negotiations between the U.S. and its Taliban enemy that are lurching into motion in Qatar as the U.S. prepares to pull out of Afghanstan next year are eerily similar to the “Paris peace talks” that paved the way for the U.S. military withdrawal from South Vietnam in 1973.

In his briefing notes for a secret 1971 meeting in Beijing with Chinese government officials, Henry Kissinger, national security adviser to U.S. president Richard Nixon, wrote in the margin: “We are ready to withdraw all of our forces (from South Vietnam) by a fixed date and let objective realities shape the political future. We want a decent interval. You have our assurance.”

The phrase got out, and it stuck: the whole point of the exercise by 1971, from the US point of view, was to get out of the Vietnamese war without admitting defeat. North Vietnam could collect its victory in the end, but it must allow a “decent interval” to pass so that Washington could distance itself from blame for the ultimate collapse of its local Vietnamese allies.

Direct American-Taliban peace talks are now on the menu for much the same reason. The Obama administration realizes

that the intervention in Afghanistan has been a ghastly failure, but it needs some semblance of success, however transitory, to console the families of the 4,000 American dead in the war, and to save America’s face internationally.

Just as in the Vietnam case, the fighting will continue while the diplomats are talking. Just as in Vietnam, American generals and diplomats must go on claiming in the meantime that victory is in sight.

When General John Allen, the last U.S. commander in Afghanistan, handed over to his successor in February, he said what he had to say: “This insurgency will be defeated over time by the legitimate and welltrained Afghan forces that are emerging today … This is victory. This is what winning looks like, and we should not shrink from using these words.”

But privately, he must know better: American generals are rarely stupid.

And just as in Vietnam, the puppet regime in Afghanistan is now panicking as its master prepares to abandon it. South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu, rightly sensing that he was about to be sold down the river, revealed the details of the secret American-North Vietnamese agreement in 1972, hoping to mobilize U.S. Congressional and public opinion against it.

Fat chance. Both members of Congress and the

public wanted out at any price.

So, too, with Afghanistan. Afghan President Hamid Karzai is refusing to send representatives to the American-organized talks in Qatar until he has a promise that the Taliban will not be given a share of power. He’s also refusing to agree to a continuing U.S. military presence in the country after 2014 until he gets his way. But he will not get his way, and the U.S. will do whatever it wants.

Maybe the Taliban will be patient enough to give the U.S. the “decent interval” it wants, believing that they can collect their victory a few years after the American troops have gone home. Or perhaps they will reject anything short of immediate and total victory, knowing that the American troops will leave anyway. However, the war in Afghanistan is actually a civil war, and they can never win a decisive victory.

The Afghan civil war began in 1992, when the puppet government that the Russians left behind when they pulled their troops out the country in 1989 collapsed. The various mujaheddin groups who had fought the Russians went to war with one

another for control of the country, and that civil war has continued ever since.

Afghanistan is a multiethnic country, and the conflict soon resolved into a struggle between the Taliban, the dominant organization in the Pashtun-populated parts of the country, and the militias of the Northern Alliance, the various smaller ethnic groups in the north of Afghanistan.

Since the Pashtuns are almost half the country’s population and had Pakistani support, the Taliban won control of multiethnic Kabul and become the country’s “government” in 1996. However, they never conquered the “Northern Alliance” that dominated the Tajik, Hazara and Uzbek provinces in the north.

Then, after 9/11, the U.S. invaded and made a de facto alliance with the warlords of the Northern Alliance. This tipped the balance in the war in the other direction, and it’s the northern warlords who have effectively run (or rather, looted) the country for the past decade.

When the U.S. leaves, the balance of power between those two sides will be restored — and the civil war between them will continue on a more equal basis. This is not Vietnam, a homogeneous country with a strong national identity. It’s a tribal country whose borders are entirely artificial. Decisive victory in Afghanistan is unattainable for any ethnic group.

Donalda School turns page on 100 years of memories RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter

Memories of Donalda School from the past 100 years were the focus of attention as former students and teachers were reunited for the school centennial on the Canada Day weekend.

“We had between 350 and 400 people at the reunion,” said Don Seale, a teacher at the school for 23 years, and chair of the planning committee.

“It’s like a family reunion of Donalda,” he said during the closing ceremonies.

Tr ave l l i n g f r o m a s far away at northern Ontario and Kelowna, B.C., 27 teachers and dozens of students returned home to reminisce about old times to inspire the future of the school.

Among the senior former teachers was Doris Henke Meyer, who was on staff from 1967 to 1975.

Parents teachers and students lauded the small school for its vital role in the community.

“As parents, we felt we had the best teachers in Alberta,” said Barb Clement, whose children were students during the 1980s.

“All the teachers and the principal worked together

and to provide students with the best atmosphere to teach and develop our children.”

A teacher of the day echoed that comment.

“We had so many ways to develop their skills in all areas such as sports, music, fine arts, singing and much more,” said Bill Simon, music and band teacher from 1982 to 1985.

Simon revived the Blue Knights marching band for an encore performance.

Back in the early years, two of eldest alumni also commended the school for helping shape their lives.

“It was great schooling back in my day,” said Mysie Dermott (McKay), now 90 years old, who graduated from the school in 1942 after she started her tenure in 1929.

“We had a very good principal.

“I hope they keep this

school open. I hear there’s talk of closing it down.”

An avid athlete in her day, Dermott said she always won many ribbons at track-and-field events.

However, she regretted one thing at school.

“I wish I had studied more, because I love to find out more about history.”

Returning to the school for the first time since he completed Grade 11 in 1946, one student was somewhat robbed of a full graduation.

“When I was in Grade 11, we had six students and when the other five students did not want to come back for Grade 12, the school decided it would not put on a Grade 12 class for one student,” said Ed Matheson, 85.

“My folks couldn’t afford to transport me to Stettler, Bashaw or Camrose.”

Legion presents Remembrance Day awards RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter About 20 students from Stettler schools were honoured last week by Stettler Legion for their top entries in the Remembrance Day literacy contest for last year.

Jayden Hope Whiteside, a Grade 11 student, was the top local winner, with first place in the central Alberta district for senior

poems and for essays.

Evelynn Blake in Grade 3 placed second in primary grades for posters in black and white.

“Thank you to all you students who worked so hard,” said Rosalind LaRose, who chairs the contest committee.

“It’s an honour when you win, so congratulations.”

She also commended local teachers for their commitment to the pro-

gram.

Pickleball is the new game in town as local seniors were introduced to the game by Dean Edwards of Camrose at a clinic in Stettler last Saturday.

Pickleball new game in town — for seniors RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter A new sport with a long history has arrived in Stettler.

Pickleball combines badminton and tennis at a slower pace, and it’s catching on with seniors.

Pickleball was introduced to youth, adults and seniors in Stettler to promote the game, a demonstration sport at the Alberta 55-Plus Summer Games this July.

“I can see it’s a good game for seniors and people of all ages,” said Stettler senior Gladys Groat, also an avid golfer.

“I don’t have any trouble serving, but it’s a little tricky on the return.”

Played on a court for doubles badminton with a tennis net mounted two inches lower, the pace of a pickleball game is typically one-third the speed of a tennis ball.

“We’ve got to get people motivated,” said Fern Borgel of Stettler, the area director for Stettler for the Alberta 55-Plus

Games.

“Who knows, maybe this will catch on in Stettler.”

Pickleball will also be an official sport in the national seniors’ games this summer.

“I see this will be good exercise,” said Linda Holt of Pine Lake.

The game is considered adaptable to indoors and outdoors.

“Maybe in the winter, we can use one of the schools, and in the summer, we could use some of the tennis courts in

town.”

Instructing the clinic, Edwards said the game was designed to be fun and promote sportsmanship.

“It can be played by any age and you want to play with your skill level,” he said.

Invented in 1965 in Washington State, the name Pickleball derived from a friend of the inventor who said the game reminded her of a pickle boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers in the boat.

Three mini-murals created by local residents were selected for parks in Stettler this summer.

Compositions by Shaelyn Dahl, Graham Scott and Nathan Spencer were top winners in a website contest by Heartland Beautification Committee. The winning entries become murals on the backsides of information signs at West Stettler Park, Lakeside Cemetery and the off-leash dog park.

“In 2012, our Communi-

ties in Bloom judges identified that the backs of our new information signs were empty,” said Rob Spencer, who chairs the committee for the Town of Stettler.

“They suggested that we place a mural or other artwork on the backs, as it would add an additional beautification feature in different parts of town.”

With 11 entries, contest winners each won 150 Heart of Alberta dollars, though Scott donated his back to the committee.

“As a committee, we decided to hold a contest to get local artists to submit their artwork capturing

their concept of the themes that represent Stettler,” Spencer said.

“All submissions were placed on the town website and people had the opportunity to vote.”

The three murals will be printed and placed on the sign backs.

“One of the main reasons for this contest is to encourage involvement from the community and to collect material from talented folks,” Spencer said.

“It fits with our heritage conservation committee work at the same time and it will have themed material.”

Congratulations to Don and Thelma Dobson of Cold Lake as they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

The couple was married on July 2, 1963 at Gaetz United Church in Red Deer, Alberta.

Since that time, their commitment to family and community has been their strength. After starting their married life in Stettler, the Dobsons relocated to Coronation where they became partners in business as well as in marriage. Don and Thelma eventually retired to Buffalo Lake where they enjoyed gol¿ng, gardening, entertaining family and friends and travelling. In 2000, they moved to Cold Lake to help care for their daughter Carol (Brad) Boychuk, who passed away from Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS) in 2004.

Their family also includes 2 other daughters and their spouses: Diane Grainger and Ben Dekker of Fort Saskatchewan; Barb Dobson and Joe Ernewein of Canmore. The Dobsons are proud grandparents of 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Temporary Foreign Worker Program hosts informaƟon session in SteƩler A free informaƟon session is planned for SteƩler on Tuesday, July 23 (note new date), from 1 to 4 p.m.

ExecuƟve summary of proposed changes to Temporary Foreign Workers program: — Alberta suīers from a signiĮcant labour shortage. The shortage is chronic and has remained fairly consistent over the past decade.

— ProjecƟons show the shortage deterioraƟng further in coming years.

— The shortage transcends occupaƟons, skill levels and demographics.

— The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) has been used by Alberta business as a stop-gap measure to deal with the labour shortage because Canada’s immigraƟon system is not structured to address the problem.

— Now, the federal government is proposing changes to the TFWP, creaƟng even more hardship for a business community already struggling to Įnd workers.

The most signiĮcant of the changes announced on April 29 are: ** The temporary suspension of the Accelerated Labour Market Opinion. ** That measure penalizes businesses that government has deemed the most “trusted employers,” as well as the ones most aīected by the chronic shortage of workers, by signiĮcantly lengthening the Ɵmeline to access workers. ** The requirement to prepare a plan showing how a business will transiƟon to a domesƟc workforce. ** The creaƟon of these plans place an unnecessary administraƟve burden on Alberta companies that are only applying for TFWs cause the domesƟc labour pool cannot accommodate their needs. ** The introducƟon of user fees and increased cost of work permits. ** If these fees do not accurately reŇect the true cost of administering Labour Market Opinions, they penalize employers in Albert who most need the program.

There is also concern in the business community that the fees could be used as a tool to discourage them from using TFWs.

COMMENTARY ON PROPOSED CHANGES Many of the proposed changes to the TFWP are considered a signiĮcant step backward from the posiƟve progress the federal government has made in recent years to make the program more eĸcient and ensure business has access to the labour force it requires to drive our economy.

It’s important to note that as the TFWP process takes 18 to 24 months, the greatest economic repercussions of the changes might not show up for a few years, thereby masking the iniƟal seriousness of the situaƟon.

In Alberta, the unavailability of unskilled labour is the greatest challenge to the provincial economy and the TFWP is the only tool for addressing immediate workforce needs of Alberta business.

The changes to the TFWP of greatest concern are the: 1. Temporary suspension of the Accelerated Labour Market Opinions (A-LMO).

2. Requirement to provide a plan to transiƟon to a domesƟc workforce.

3. IntroducƟon of LMO user fees and increasing the cost of work permits.

ISSUES/RECOMMENDATIONS 1. Suspending the Accelerated Labour Market Opinions.

2. TransiƟon plan requirement.

3. User fees for LMOs and increased cost-of-work permits.

OTHER PROPOSED CHANGES Removing the 15-per-cent wage Ňexibility.

PrevenƟon of using TFWP to outsource jobs.

Restrict language requirements to English and French.

Increase authority to suspend or revoke work permits.

Blokland wins one for dad Stettler’s Canada Day 10K race winner takes secondary route after floods stall High River JOHN MACNEIL Independent editor Ian Blokland had planned to run a High River race last weekend.

But the devastating flooding that crippled that southern Alberta community scuttled those plans, steering Blokland to his hometown Stettler race for Canada Day. Blokland won the 10-kilometre event in convincing fashion in steamy heat Monday. It was a victory in the face of trying times for flood victims like his father, Emile, the mayor of High River.

“I was supposed to be running there today, and we were going to have a bit of a family gathering and camping,” Ian Blokland said. “We’ll push that off until later in the summer, when hopefully it calms down a bit.

“He (Emile) is working pretty hard.

He’ll probably need a pretty long nap once this (cleanup) ends. It looks like they’re starting to turn a corner there.

“There’s thousands of people working around the clock, trying to get everything going there.”

The entire town was forced to evacuate after the Highwood River overflowed its banks in late June.

“It’s by far the (town’s) worst flood,” the younger Blokland said. “Not only has the water never been this high, but normally it builds over the course of a week or so, and they can see it coming long enough to sand-bag and have some contingencies, whereas this one was in about the course of the afternoon.”

The seasoned marathon runner finished in 37 minutes and 12 seconds, short of his personal-best time of 34:31, but more than 10 minutes ahead of second-place finisher Greggory Jackson (47:58).

Blokland set his 10K personal best two years ago “on a much cooler day.”

Temperatures were pushing 30 C when this year’s race began Monday morning in Stettler.

“Today is obviously is a really warm day,” said Blokland, 37. “I don’t think

it would have mattered when we started (because) it was already hot.”

Fresh off marathon runs in Ottawa and Halifax this spring, Blokland has been around the block, so to speak, but he believes his experience with adverse conditions is only so much of an advantage.

“Used to it, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy,” he said with a smile. “It just means that maybe you’re experienced enough to try and slow down early, rather than (going too fast too soon).

“So I thought I went out really, really slowly and it turned out that was exactly the right pace. There were little kids in front of me the first couple of blocks, and they tuckered out. I said, ‘OK, this is about right.’ ” Blokland has been running “seriously” for about seven years.

“Running is usually something you do when you’re younger, in between other sports,” he said. “And then as you get older, you can’t do (other) sports, so you just run.”

As a youth, Blokland played tennis and basketball and occasionally ran in the off-seasons for those sports.

These days, Blokland lives in Camrose, where he’s an associate professor of physics and math at the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus.

While visiting with his mother, Pat Turigan, in Stettler for a couple of weeks, he decided to sign up for the Canada Day race.

“I’ve never done this race before,” he said. “I’ve run on all the different pieces of the course, but I’ve never actually tried to run this as its own little route.

“Normally when I run around town, I

have to get out on the country roads so that I can actually run for an hour without going in circles or crossing streets every 30 seconds.”

He prefers marathon running to the shorter distances, and his repertoire of winter and spring marathons would attest to that commitment.

“It’s different when you go this short distance,” he said after the Stettler 10K. “You’re kind of running hard right from the start. Yeah, it’s done soon, but you’re really suffering early.

“Whereas a marathon, you ease into it, you talk to the person next to you, and maybe after a couple of hours, it starts to get a little tiring. But by that point, it’s more of an adventure, whereas these things are just suffering.”

He realizes that suffering is mild, though, compared to the pain his father and other High River residents experience as they try to rebuild their town.

Emile Blokland is a former Stettler businessman who served two terms on Stettler town council. His sister, Winnie Bissett, and their 90-year-old father, Floris Blokland, live in Stettler.

BY THE NUMBERS Warming up for summer triathlons, Joel Norman won the five-kilometre race Monday in a time of 19:05. Graeme Broemeling placed second in 19:51, one second ahead of Kent Barritt.

Liam Missikewitz won the 2.5-kilometre event in 11:24, and Emily Barritt took first in the one-kilometre race, finishing in 4:55.

Thundering fans bring home chuckwagon winner BILLY MELVILLE AND JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE Black Press reporters Thousands of chuckwagon fans filled the Ponoka Stampede grandstands to stomp their feet and bring Roger Moore to the finish line.

The highly anticipated $50,000 Tommy Dorchester Dash for Cash at the Stampede on Canada Day featured Kelly Sutherland, Roger Moore, Jerry Bremner and Luke Tournier. They survived the semifinal round and ran for the championship at one

of chuckwagon racing’s most prestigious events. In one of the most exciting chuckwagon races of the year, Roger Moore — driving the Pidherney’s outfit — collected the winning money and a new GMC Sierra pickup truck. Outriders Shawn Calf Robe and Quaid Tournier helped Moore win the prize.

Coming off of barrel position number 2 in the sudden death final, Moore captured Ponoka crown with a penalty free run of 1:14.27. Tournier placed second from barrel position No. 1, just 38 one-hundredths of a second behind Moore, followed by Jerry Bremner and Kelly Sutherland from

barrel positions 3 and 4 respectively in a penalty-free championship final heat.

Moore won nine times during his time on the Canadian Pro Circuit and the Ponoka victory marks not only his first on the WPCA Pro Tour since joining in 2012, but his first in a major chuckwagon event.

“I’m pumped.”

“I knew I couldn’t out-turn anyone,” he added.

Moore enjoyed the challenge of competing against the other three outfits but he has been working all year to find the best combination of horses to race. “It’s not just the horses. It’s gotta be everybody

else. It’s the outriders.”

He had to switch an outrider and used Tournier instead.

“He’s never rode that horse before.

He just did an awesome job for me,” said Moore.

Kurt Bensmiller won the day money after posting the fastest time of the night with a 1:13.85, placing first by 30 onehundredths of a second over Kirk Sutherland, with Rae Croteau Jr. posting the third best time on the night, followed by 2013 Ponoka Stampede Champion Roger Moore and Colt Cosgrave who rounded out the top five.

Vold makes his mark at hometown rodeo AMELIA NAISMITH Black Press reporter After seven days, the fifth largest rodeo in the world, the Ponoka Stampede, came to tremendous crescendo Monday, and once the dust settled only eight rodeo competitors walked away with championship buckles.

Ponoka’s bareback champion Jake Vold finished the short go with a score of 91.5.

“I feel pretty good, a few bumps and bruises, but I feel pretty good,” he said.

Vold had seen Stampede Warrior perform before and knew, with his riding style, he had a good chance of winning. “I knew she was going to do her part and it was just up to me to do mine.”

“Right from the get go she, she’s a strong horse and if you stub your toe she’d going to throw you off. But coming in the middle of the ride I knew I was tapped off on her and it felt good,” he added about his championship ride.

Vold knew he was going to have to ride hard, and while his drive and instinct to spur doesn’t always come off positively, it fit Stampede Warrior. “She stays hooked the whole time and I knew if I could just get going on her it was going to work out.”

Vold’s competition, Kyle Bowers, Colin Adams and Clint Cannon, are some of the top bareback riders in the world. “They all ride good, you got the top of the world here. To come out on top was a huge accomplishment.”

“It doesn’t matter where you are, when your buddies do good you’re happy, if it ain’t you you make sure it’s your buddy . . . You’re always cheering for the other guy, it’s a good feeling it doesn’t matter who wins. But if you come out on top it feels pretty good,” he added With it fixed in his mind that Ponoka was just another rodeo for the taking, Vold was able to keep the nerves at bay. “You just have to put your mind in the middle, envision your ride and make it happen.”

With 77th Ponoka Stampede winnings in the back pocket of his Wranglers, Vold figures his place at the Canadian Finals Rodeo is mostly secured and he’s focusing his efforts on the National Finals Rodeo.

Saddle bronc champion

was Jacobs Crawley from Stephenville, Texas, and he was thrilled to kick off his Fourth of July weekend and the rest of the summer season with such momentum and a score of 89.5.

Crawley’s championship ride got off to a rocky start when his bronc refused to leave the chute. “That’ll happen. Sometimes bucking horse, whenever they get in the habit of being bucked a lot, sometimes they learn some tricks.”

After being reset the horse left the chute with a vengeance. “Outside of the chute she was what you look for in a bronc. Like, I mean (she) took her head, jumped, kicked over head, hung in the air; what a bronc rider looks at and drives 20 hours to go get on.”

Brenda Mays of Terrebonne, Ore. was barrel rac-

ing champion, with a time of 17.380, and this year is the second year she rode at the Ponoka Stampede. “(I’m) just excited, I don’t think it’s hit yet. I’m pretty excited and it’s just unreal,” Mays said after receiving her buckle.

Mays had placed 13th in the long go but when another competitor turned out she was bumped into 12th place and was given the opportunity to ride for a championship place.

After taking the first barrel on a horse she’s owned for the last 12 years Mays knew the ride was going to go well. “With the first barrel with him it’s a little iffy, especially in a big, wide open place like this . . . Tonight he nailed it.”

Bull riding champion is Tyler Thomson of Black Diamond, and the humble

cowboy says he may have won the title and buckle but it was travelling partner and fellow bull rider Chad Besplug who came out with best scores after the long go and really won the rodeo.

However, he’s still feeling good to have the Ponoka winnings to his name after finishing with a score of 88.

“This rodeo’s a big deal in the whole year. It’s a very large step towards making the Canadian Finals. It’s an unbelievable feeling to win a rodeo like this.”

Timber Moore of Aubrey, Texas, was the tie down roping champion with a time of 7.0 ; Airdrie’s Todd Maughd won the steer wrestling with 4.20 seconds and the champion team ropers were Brett McCarrell of Camrose and Clint Buhler of Okotokes, who won with a time of 5.9.

It is with great sadness in our hearts that we announce the loss of Erma Hummel who passed away peacefully at Heritage House in Stettler, Alberta on June 25, 2013 at the age of 89 years. Erma was born on September 5, 1923 at home, near Horsham, Saskatchewan to parents Rosalia and Gottfried Klauss.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children Audrey (Jim) Potter, Gloria (Dewey) Rowles, Brenda (Ed) Koenig, Janice (Carson) Wood, grandson Marty Rowles and granddaughter Deanna Rowles.

Erma was predeceased by her husband Emil in 1993.

Her smiles and loving kindness will be greatly missed. Being with her family was her greatest joy. Mom will always be an angel in our hearts.

A private family service will take place.

By Les and Rosemary Stulberg Byemoor School students enjoyed a year-end trip to Stettler last Tuesday. They visited the Stettler museum, saw the movie “Superman” at the Jewel Theatre, went bowling and had pizza. It was a busy, but fun, day.

Wednesday was the last day of school and report cards were picked up Friday. School doors are now closed until September as students, teachers, staff and bus drivers enjoy a two-month summer break. We hope everyone has a fantastic summer.

Local folks celebrated the Canada Day long weekend in a variety of ways. Some took in the 10th annual Wade Buchwitz Memorial Gymkhana in Endiang on July 1, while others enjoyed camping, the Ponoka Stampede and other activities.

David and Luann Buchwitz are in the process of getting settled in their new home in the Pigeon Lake area. We wish Dave and Luann all the best in their new location. They have been longtime members of the community and will be missed.

We’re pleased to report the

welcome addition of new people in our community.

Dwayne Watson and Alicia have moved into the former home of Ryan and Denny Dettmer in Byemoor. Welcome, Dwayne and Alicia. It’s always nice to have more young folks in the community.

We welcome Terri (nee Coulthard) Simpson to the community. Terri joins Marty Brooker on the Brooker farm east of Endiang. Terri is no stranger to the community, as she was raised here — so welcome back, Terri.

Blake and Joyce Clausen, along with their daughter Renee McCarty, have returned from a two-week vacation to Scotland and Denmark. They spent a week in each country where they visited with relatives and took in the sights. They reported a wonderful time, with good weather.

Tristin and Leland Dittman hosted a barbecue for their school friends as they bid farewell to the Byemoor School.

The boys went to school here while they, their parents Corey and Jennifer, and younger siblings Milo and Violet, were in

transition with the selling of their home in Calgary and getting settled into their new home in the Fritz Hill district near Big Valley.

Larry and Lorene Stulberg spent a week in Las Vegas to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. While they were there, the area experienced record-breaking heat, with temperatures hitting 46 degrees Celsius.

Stettler makes noise with new rock band LES STULBERG Independent reporter Stettler’s new four-piece rock band, “Sin Twister,” is up and running.

Frontman Shaman Crowe said the band has only been playing together a few months, but is “fired in high.”

Crowe is lead singer of the group, along with Aldo Ferrusi on bass guitar, Wade Maillet on lead guitar and Jared Scheeler on drums.

Crowe and Ferrusi are from Stettler, while Maillet hails from Drumheller and

Scheeler calls Red Deer home.

All have prior band experience.

They bill themselves as a rock, metal and punk band, but Crowe said some of their music is “a hybrid of all influences.”

He writes most of the material for the band.

Their sound has been compared to Guns N’ Roses and Marilyn Manson.

Crowe was a part of a local band, “Power Sledge,” but said the songs he was writing didn’t fit their heavier style.

Crowe said the band members hadn’t

planned to have any gigs until after they released their first album, but they’re already receiving bookings.

They had an engagement in Rocky Mountain House last weekend.

Crowe said the band has a couple of radio appearances coming up.

Sin Twister is working on its first album, which will be self-titled, and is expected to include 13 original songs.

Crowe encouraged fans to check out the band’s Facebook page and pick the songs they would like to see included on the album.

By Lousie Bellair Hopefully, everyone had a great long Canada Day weekend, and enjoyed all the sunshine after all the rain we had previously. There are still donations being collected for the Alberta Southern Flood Relief in support of people flooded out of their homes and property.

Bingo evening happens again this coming Tuesday, starting at 7:15 at the Botha Senior Centre.

Come out for one great evening of fun and excitement.

Another special birthday is coming up soon. On July 9, for John Hankins.

Take a break every Wednesday morning from your busy schedule and pop into the Botha Senior Centre for a hot, refreshing cup of coffee.

There’s no monthly meeting for the summer months, as everyone is busy with all the other summer activities.

Playground Program began with a Welcome to Playgroup fun (Let’s Create) and tomorrow they will start off the day building out of giant cardboard, castles, solider forts, or barns.

That sounds like fun, and you’re invited to involve your child in those activities.

Next Tuesday, July 9, a guest is scheduled to talk to the children about doing things with horses. On Thurday, July 11, they will be making stick horses and having fun with them.

To register, show up at 9 a.m. for what promises to be a fun time.

Halkirk students went swimming at Castor in the morning, had pizza for lunch and then watched a movie in the afternoon.

It was a day to bid farewell to classmates and to two teachers who will not return next fall. Eric Neilson will be accepting a full-time position in Consort and Lisa Gallon will be teaching in Forestburg. Our best wishes go with them.

The grades 7 to 9 students enjoyed a camping field trip. They spent their first day at Cap Ayre Lake, north of Consort and their second day at Bodo, north of Altario, where they toured an archaeological site and camped out in tee-pees.

Congratulations to Steven Strandquist and Kelsey Derr, who were married June 25. The newlyweds will make their home in Stettler.

Gary Doan, son of the late Joe and Mrytle (DesJardine) Doan, from Whiterock, B.C., made a whirlwind trip though our area on Monday. He had lunch with Wray

Emmett, spent the afternoon with his aunt and uncle, Bill and May Jamieson, called on Billy Matier and spent the night with Doan and Sherry Jamieson, where he visited with Phil Doan, Maxine Baird, Sheryl and Ross Bunbury and Melanie Bunbury.

On Tuesday, he called on Bernie and Bernice Doan, Dean and Don Coulthard, and then went on to Forestburg for a visit with Doug and Gwen Matier. On Friday, Jean and Don Farmer, Eunice (Doan) and Campbell Lindsay’s daughter from the Island, visited with May and Bill Jamieson and with Doan and Sherry Jamieson, and then went on to Castor to visit Norm and Marion Steinwand. Jean and Marion are sisters.

JD and Sandra Johnson and girls left on Wednesday for an extended weekend visit with siblings Kim and Daryl Mackie and with Kandace and Scott Morrison and their families in Vancouver.

Dale and Melody Kent spent last weekend with Greg and Laura Kent, who have just moved into their new home in Lloydminster.

Howe team fights MS in bike tour RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter

Women with roots in Castor and Stettler teamed up to raise a few thousand dollars in the annual MS bike tour last month from Leduc to Camrose.

“We raised about $4,000,” said Donna Howe, mother of members of the local team.

Leanne Lougheed (Howe) of Stettler, Jill Howe of Sylvan Lake, Erin Howe of Edmonton, Lauren Saruga (Potter) of Halkirk and friend Jolene Marks of Edmonton were among 2,000 riders in the 185-kilometre tour for two days in mid-June.

“Erin, Jill, Leanne and Lauren all grow up and attended school in Castor, and Jolene is a friend of Leanne’s who just wanted to help in our cause,” Howe said.

Other than asking for donations, the team also raised funding through bottle drives and baked and sold cupcakes.

“I was diagnosed with MS in 2003, and since then, my three daughters and I, along with other family and friends, have participated in events to raise funds for a cure for this disease, which not only affects me but also other members of our community,” Howe said.

Howe said. “Now we just concentrate on the bike tour.”

The Howe sisters daughters have ridden in

the Bike Tour four times.

“I was at the finish line proudly cheering and clapping,” Howe said.

“As for the riders,

while they enjoyed the ride, they were all a little tired, but even with their quite tender bottoms, they were all planning for next

year’s ride.”

Howe and the team thank everyone who helped support them with donations.
