Through the Walls of Time Blueberry Creek was once Bruce Gardens, but who was Bruce? placed an earlier set recorded by George M. Dawson in his 1889 Report on a Portion of the West Kootanie [sic] District, British Columbia. He called them St. Agnes,

Eighteenth in a mainly alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names.

Blueberry, or Blueberry Creek, is one of three fruit-themed Castlegar suburbs.

(The others are Raspberry and Strawberry, although the latter is no longer in common use.)

The creek was so named by January 1, 1897 when it was mentioned in the Trail Creek News. The Blueberry railway siding was named on a Columbia and Western Railway schedule dated November 21, 1897 and published in the Slocan Pioneer of December 11, 1897.

For a while around 1910-11, the community — or at least a portion of it — was known as Bruce Gardens, despite the fact the post office opened on May 1, 1910 as Blueberry Creek.

Bruce Gardens is mentioned in the Nelson Daily News of December 15 and 22, 1910 and January 7, 1911. One headline read “Water system for Bruce Gardens,” yet the story itself said “All together Blueberry creek looks forward to a prosperous future.”

Who was Bruce?

It’s an unsolved mystery. No one by that name was listed there in the 1910 Henderson directory for BC,

Pillar, and Geyser, but they evidently didn’t stick.

Ethnographer James Teit also recorded a Sinixt name for Bonnington Falls, ntsa’kutawi’txu,

which he translated as “portage or carrying place for canoes.”

The Bonnington Falls post office opened August 1, 1911 and closed August 31, 1964.

which included the notation “See also Blueberry Creek” and erroneously stated Bruce Gardens was on Okanagan Lake, eight miles south of Okanagan Landing.

(The confusion was with Bruce’s Landing, which was in fact on Okanagan Lake.)

The same directory also erroneously stated Blueberry Creek was “a settlement in Kootenay district situated two miles north of Moberly.”

Bruce Gardens was never mentioned in the directories again.

The Blueberry Creek post office closed on May 12, 1973. Blueberry, which is home to a community school, amalgamated with Castlegar in 2004.

Bonnington Falls Bonnington, or Bonnington Falls, was named by Sir Charles Ross (1872-1942),

first president of West Kootenay Power and Light after Bonnington Linn, a waterfall along the River Clyde in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

The name was applied to the falls themselves, the upper and lower dams developed on them, and the community that grew up around them.

The earliest mention is in an ad in the Nelson Tribune of July 17, 1897 for

the West Kootenay Power and Light Co. at “Bonnington Falls, Kootenay River, Nelson.” (A week earlier the ad in the same space had been for the Bonnington Power Co.) The Lower Bonnington dam was built that year.

Ross similarly named the other Kootenay River falls Corra Linn and Stonebyers, although the latter is no longer widely used.

If Nelson native Dale Donaldson had been looking for validation on a decision he made several decades ago, the latest installment came on June 15. It was then that the proprietor of Mallards Source for Sports in Castlegar and Nelson was honoured as the Business

Person of the Year by the Castlegar and District Chamber of Commerce.

Having been named “Business Person of the Year,” Donaldson was a prime candidate for a brief profile and was quite willing to chat about his relative success on June 27.

The young entrepreneur had moved to Castlegar in 1984 and started up the store and added the second store in Nelson in 1986.

“I spent a lot of time

Dale has benefitted along the way by associating with veterans of the commercial scene.

A Nanaimo company has won the contract to build the new transfer station at Grohman Narrows.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay awarded the job last month to Copcan Contracting Ltd., the low bidder at $1.87 million.

Although based on Vancouver

Island, Copcan has a Rossland office.

The other bidders were Nelson’s Maglio Installations Ltd. at $1.95 million and Dawson Construction Ltd. of Kamloops at $2.3 million.

Ron Mickel, who chairs the regional district’s central waste committee, said work is expected to begin within six weeks and be completed next spring.

“The cost of crushing and making it usable for construction purposes was prohibitive, so we couldn’t do that.”

Nelson that the regional district bought in 2011.

The new facility will replace the transfer station on the Nelson waterfront, which will be closed and remediated for other uses.

Although the low bid had come in close to budget, Mickel said they have had to redesign some of the project.

“We have to leave

some rock on site and just level it,” he said.

“The cost of crushing and making it useable for construction purposes was prohibitive, so we couldn’t do that. We’re just going to have to use it for fill.”

Even so, Mickel said they are “committed to doing something workable for the next 30 or 40 years instead of fixing it up as we go.”

Trail council green-lighted Arlington Bar and Grill owner Jeff Boag’s request to open his establishment at 9 a.m. for breakfast service.

Early risers may have a new nook but late night revellers will have to pack it in at 12:30 a.m. instead of 1:50 a.m., as he is also proposing a new

closing time to kick in.

“Whenever there is an amendment under consideration by the liquor control board, there is a process for local government to provide comment,” explained Michelle McIsaac, corporate administrator.

McIsaac said council had to consider an increased potential for noise and other negative impacts

on the community; consultation with the RCMP; and comments from adjacent property owner/occupants.

Council did unanimously support Boag’s request, but it is just the first step in the process and now he must submit the city’s consent along with his application to the BC Liquor License Board in Victoria.

The Village of Montrose officially rescinded its twoyear boil water advisory and distributed a “Water Condition Normal” notice to its residents.

Since February 2011, the village has been on a “Boil Water Notice” imposed

by Interior Health Authority (IHA) because sample tests detected persistent low levels of total coliforms, a bacterial indicator of water contamination.

“With successful

implementation of water treatment, the village now provides residents and visitors with significant improvement to ensure clean drinking water,” said Mayor Joe Danchuk in a media release.

Bacteriological results of samples collected from the well sources in the distribution system since the chlorination went online have been satisfactory and met the requirements of the “Drinking Water Protection Regulation,” said Anita Ely the IHA drinking water officer in the release.

School may be out for the summer, but planning for next year will likely be on the minds of many Rossland parents until class is in session once again.

J. L. Crowe Secondary is prepping to take on an onslaught of grades 10-12 Rossland students who will now bus down to

the Trail high school, following some movement within School District 20 to cut costs.

Crowe principal David DeRosa said it’s been an emotional process for students and teachers but much work has been done to ensure a smooth transition.

“The numbers from RSS (Rossland Secondary School) are not too over-

whelming and the transition process on both ends has been very supportive and positive,” he explained. “We will have four new teaching staff from RSS as they transfer with the senior students.

The small number surprised many people, but it reflects the fact that the RSS’ 10-12 student population will be 100 students, so four teach-

Welcome to our regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk. ey player – replete with oversized stick – at the ice hockey pond while Passing It Along was a gentler moment. A father nestles his son between his legs as he shows him the finger placements and movements on a shared banjo. His work on display this year is one of his many bird sculptures, ranging from larger birds like egrets and cranes to smaller ones such as robins and blackbirds.

Dee Clements ‘End of Day’ (bronze)

Dee Clements returns to Sculpturewalk Castlegar after a one year absence with another inspired work that highlights his mastery of real life figures. A member of the National Sculptor’s Guild, Clements previously displayed here two years ago with two different bronzes – Going for the Goal and Passing It Along. Until this year, he is the only sculptor to have multiple pieces displayed in a single year.

Cranes are a particular favourite of Clements’, stemming in part from a South Dakota farm childhood where he drew and sketched the wildlife that surrounded him. “ Both of my parents were artistic and encouraged my enjoyment of art and drawing. Much of my work is an appreciation and reflection of those years,” he says. “Waterfowl were a part of my everyday world as a child, and their grace and beauty remains undiminished to me.”

The family of sand hill cranes that comprise ‘End of Day’ comes to Castlegar from the Omaha Botanical Gardens, where they reside amid lily ponds, reeds and natural grasses. A mother crane spreads her wings wide, sheltering her offspring protectively as they settle in for the evening, reddish heads alert and attentive. The sculpture is both meditative and alive, wariness and contentment are captured in exquisite detail by Clements’ practiced, talented hand.

Time spent in Korea fostered a lifelong fascination with the country and the continent; the end result is his impressive Asianinspired body of work. Cranes are an important part of Asian art and culture, and they figure predominantly in several beautiful reliefs (‘Flying Cranes Relief ’ and ‘Standing Cranes Relief ’) and an exquisitely crafted box titled ‘Dancing Cranes’, featuring the same on the lid.

Utilizing his Master’s degree in Sculpture and years of commissions for memorials, corporations and institutions, he has perfected his technique in sculpting impressive figurative bronze works that cover a wide range of subjects. As he puts it, “In creating a bronze monument, not only is the form and design a key to the successful work, but also the attention to every detail in this unforgiving style of representational sculpture.” Clements’s ‘End of Day’ is a fine example of form, design and detail melding together seamlessly to create a memorable piece of art.

Douglas Walker ‘Honkfest’ (various metals) You probably remember Douglas Walkers’s memorable entry at last year’s Sculpturewalk. The four metre high Kinetic Weather Disturbance was located on 13th Avenue by the police museum, a slender pole surmounted by a cacophony-like collection of items: horns, clocks, springs and trophies all combined into a visually stunning work.

He returns this year with another fine offering of his eclectic, elegant sculptures – ‘Honkfest’. Originally crafted for the Revision@Creekhouse art and design show in Vancouver, ‘Honkfest’ flows figuratively and literally. It is one of Walker’s celebrated water fountain sculptures, perfect as the centerpiece of

With a reclaimed tuba at its heart, the sculpture surges upwards just like a shooting fountain. A trombone slide offsets swaying, jaunty horns; the apex is crowned by a quarter moon. Mismatched bronze swans at the base along with wavy brass stalks topped by spheres all contribute to the harmonious lines and overall flow ‘Honkfest’ conjures.

It is shapely and stately, busy but balanced, a testament to Walker’s imaginative use of disparate objects to create beautifully functional art.

Working from his studio in the Comox Valley, he fashions a variety of sublime objects for the garden, yard or home. Using reclaimed and recycled metal, he transforms the ordinary and the unexpected into splendid fountains, headboards, bird feeders, gates and weather vanes. Lately, he has been creating exquisite lamps from old musical instruments supplemented by other metal flourishes.

“Horns figure in much of my work,” he says, “probably because early in my sculpting career I traded a sculpture for a collection of old brass instruments my client had amassed.

That was the impetus, and while the original collection has been long exhausted, I continue to find and use more. There is something transcendent in the instruments, their lines and the sounds they can produce.”

across the continent and around the world, instantly recognizable for their intricacy and elegance. He keeps busy creating unique works for a series of art exhibitions. This summer will see his complex, cohesive works displayed not only here but also at two shows in Washington and one in Iowa. Rounding out a busy summer are installations at the Harmony Arts Festival in Vancouver and his hometown favourite, the Filberg Festival in Comox, both in August.

“While expanding my repertoire, I continue to use objects that I fuse together so the various components become the whole. Whether it’s a ten foot water fountain or a delicate bird feeder, I always aim to make each piece collectively appealing to the eye.” He pauses, then adds, “Appealing, and often functional too.”

It’s a winning combination, and his ever-expanding output is testimony to that. ‘Honkfest’ is a marvellous sculpture from a master of taking eclectic, disjointed bits and pieces and combining them into a connected, finished whole.

Tip of the Week:The first New Moon of Summer occurs on July 8th at 12:14 am PDT, so it takes place on July 7th for most of the world. The eclipses in April and May and the ‘Super Moon’ of June sure have delivered in terms of synchronizing with powerful events. I am referring to the massive flooding the world over. These peak points in the cycles of nature are not easy to predict, but they are certain to occur and the endeavor to be able to predict where and when they will occur constitutes the roots of science and astrology. These powerful events have and continue to bring about the change and transformation that they were predicted to produce this year. Astrologers sent this warning out earlier this year. I made clear mention of it in my Horoscope for the Year 2013 which is posted on my website, along with forecasts for each sign covering 2013. Regarding the catastrophic impact of nature that have and continue to be visited upon humanity, finding the silver lining can be especially tough in the wake of such widespread tragedy and devastation. Perhaps the rare and powerful exact Grand Trine in Water between Jupiter in Cancer, Saturn in Scorpio and Neptune in Pisces on July 17th will reveal the inner gift of these events. This is a rare and powerful alignment because it is exact to the degree and involves 3 of the 5 far planets. The odds of this occurring are very low and yet here we are at this powerful and pivotal time having the privileged opportunity to experience it. I will bring more attention to it next week.

The synchronistic effects of it are certain yet difficult to pinpoint because cosmic alignments affect people and places here on earth relative to their respective reality and circumstance – cycles within cycles. Gold Fever Follies set to fly Timothy Schafer West Kootenay Advertiser

The region’s only professional summer stock theatre company is back in business.

Gold Fever Follies contains some of the best young singers, actors and dancers from the West Kootenay and across the province and it has opened for its twomonth summer run at the Miners’ Union Hall in Rossland.

The new season is unearthing some valuable and rare minerals with an all new play, A Job Well Done, loosely based on the historic events and people of Rossland’s early gold rush days.

Written by Follies alumnus Kate Eldridge, the play is directed by three-time Follies director R.J. Peters, who brings his humorous touch to the stage.

It’s an all new show, says casting director

Lisa Henderson, who took over as president of the Follies’ society last year.

“One thing the locals don’t understand is that it is a completely different story every year,” she said.

“Some people think ‘Well, I saw the Follies last year.’ But it’s not one of those shows you see on cruise ships where they do the same show every year because they have thousands of tourists go through each day. We actually create a whole new story.”

The show runs from Tuesday to Saturday, with two shows daily, a matinee at matinee at 3 p.m. and an evening show at 7:30 p.m.

After the opening Saturday night the regular shows run starts Tuesday, July 2.

Tickets are available at the door for $13 (general admission), while children under five are free.

Children from six to

12 are $8, while seniors (65+) are $10.

The show runs until Aug. 24.

This year’s A Job Well Done, written by past Follies member Kate Eldridge, takes place in the Columbia, a new dancehall that was the first of its kind.

Frank Hanna Jr. (Casey Gray), son and namesake of the founder of Trail, is miserable in life and in love, but when he meets Josie (Alexandra Wever), a dancehall girl from Spokane, his world is turned upside down.

However, he isn’t the only one vying for her affections. His competitor, Ed Roberts (Vaughn Naylor), is a newcomer who claims to be a contractor hired by the CPR, but he appears to be doing the town more harm than good.

Frank needs to win Josie’s heart for both his sake as well as for Rossland’s.
