RODEO WAS BORN AND RAISED ON THE RUGGED PRAIRIES

BY MIKE RAINONE FOR THE PONOKA NEWS The thrilling sport of rodeo has over the years attracted millions of avid fans and generations of all ages annually to indoor and outdoor venues in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world. Thousands of gritty and multitalented men and women have been given the exciting opportunity of being able to travel down the road and compete for huge prize purses and distinction.

But do we ever pause to wonder where this wild and wonderful confrontation of

man and beast really began?

It was likely on our wide open prairies in the early 1900s that young wranglers took time out of their gruelling day on the cattle drive or in the field to have a little fun. The robust challenge was to try and rope a frisky steer or ride a wild horse, and the only reward was the bragging rights around the camp-fire with their buddies — as well as a whole lot of bruises.

We can thank our forefathers and the Ponoka Agricultural Society for introducing the humble beginnings of rodeo and racing to their annual County

Fair in our then tiny community. When so many pioneer families invaded Railway Street for the popular one-day event at the turn of the century it had to be eventually relocated to a grassy hill on the southern outskirts of town, the location of the original Ponoka Stampede and Fair Grounds.

Early events of this gala summer celebration included games of chance, a few carnival rides, competitions and sales of garden produce and fine home cooking, music, dances, and a parade. As well as running races for the children, a western flavour was added

The Ponoka Sports Association was formed in 1920, and as activities and popularity increased on the grounds, many facilities were added, including the first wooden grandstand, barns, buildings, and on and on. One of the first Stampede events that same year was a fundraiser for the much-needed Ponoka Women’s Restroom, which stood at 5014-51 Avenue for many decades. Prize purses at those early events were likely a few dollars, a ribbon, a shiny buckle or trophy.

The first official Ponoka Stampede was held in 1936 and rodeo legend George McKeddie, a First World War veteran and 1922 Alberta Bronc Busting Champion, became the first manager.

The thrills and chills of the sport of rodeo attracted fans from town and county and afar. For the 1938 event 6,000 fans would jam the grounds for the one-day hoopla.

The action slowed down a little over the war years, but took off again in the mid-Forties, as new rodeo stars emerged, and many more exciting events were added to accommodate the entire family.

Stories have it that chuckwagon racing came to Ponoka about 1941 with the help of the Dorchester family, who had also been involved in introducing and competing in a host of daredevil racing events in the surrounding countryside. An early description of this wild new adventure, which first began on the open range, featured the cook’s covered meal wagon being pulled from camp to camp by four of the strongest horses available. It eventually became a grub race, with steel rims added to the wooden wheels, and four outriders assigned to toss in an 85-pound stove and tent poles, then lead the charging outfit around a figure eight and onto the dusty track for the dash or crash for glory.

Three wagons ran in that first Ponoka race, Slim Fenton was the winner, and so the colourful and thrilling tradition of chuckwagon racing was born.

GET READY FOR SEVEN DAYS OF RODEO ACTION

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE The small town of Ponoka, with a population of 6,700, swells to thousands more during Stampede Week.

The Stampede brings many different events over the week but the best part for Joe Dodds is the first day. As president of the Ponoka Stampede and Exhibition Association, Dodds really enjoys the entire experience but all the planning and organizing culminates on that first day. ìItís better than Christmas, it lasts a whole week,î says Dodds.

Kicking off the Stampede this year is the Professional Bull Riding event, the Jace Harty Memorial Bull Riding. The association added the bull riding to its roster, adding an extra day to the Ponoka Stampede schedule.

Director Blair Vold knows planning goes well when ìthe sun is shining, the grandstand is plum full of people, thereís a bronc in the arena and everythingís perfect.î ìYou kind of forget about your life for seven days,î added Dodds.

He is proud Stampede events are sanctioned by the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and is in the top 5 rodeos of total payout in the world.

But the community events that go along with the Stampede are

fun for the entire family; from pancake breakfasts, the Stampede Parade, the midway to Canada Day festivities. The second day of the Stampede will bring entertainment from the well-known Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the Dodge Truck Giveaway winner will be announced. As if that wasnít enough, country music legend Wynonna Judd will entertain music fans June 27, followed by fireworks.

The time events have two gorounds a day, once during the morning slack and again in the afternoon rodeo. Tuesday has an evening performance rather than in the afternoon and the last day features the top 12 competitors; the top four then compete in the final rodeo showdown in the evening.

Infield entertainment is usually rotated every three years so expect to see rodeo clown CrAsh Cooper keeping people laughing during the rodeo. Cooper is also an artist who was commissioned by the Stampede Association to paint cowboy Rod Hay. The story of Rod Hay can be found on page 7. Cooperís painting will be auctioned off June 30, see page 7 for more details.

Yukon and the United States. ìWe try to put on a first class organization and it works all the way down.î Dodds encourages those groups who have ideas to work with the Stampede Association to contact them. ìThatís what makes the Ponoka Stampede. Itís the Wild Wild West of í36,î he stated.

Another feature during Rodeo Week is the Tough Enough to Wear Pink awareness day June 27. The idea was created by Wrangler to raise awareness for breast cancer and the Stampede Association took on the idea in 2007. More than $24,000 has been raised since it began.

Fireworks entertainment A great way to close the eveningís

entertainment is with a bang but itís also something to give back to the town, says director Mike Stretch. ìWhen the music is overÖIt helps get peopleís focus on something else.î People have come expect the fireworks, especially after the talent show performance.

Stretch remembers feedback one year when there were no fireworks after the talent show. ìWhen you donít have it, people miss it.î This year the association is having fewer nights of fireworks but spending more money on increasing their impact. The Ponoka Fire Department volunteers to ensure the safety of spectators.

COLOURFUL STAMPEDE HISTORY

Continued from page 2 Here are some of the early highlights and milestones of the early years and successes of the little Stampede that just keeps on growing.

• Going into the Fifties, prize money in the five major rodeo events had reached $400 for the now two-day annual rodeo. Harry Vold (Mr. Rodeo) had become the arena manager and always made sure that the best and rankest stock was brought in for the Ponoka Stampede.

• The local Kinsmen and Lions Clubs were very much involved with the carnival part of the Stampede, and other community organizations agreed to join in. Because of the steady growth of the popular rodeo each year, the Ponoka Stampede Association recommended that all local clubs be approached regarding the appointment of two members from each group into the nonprofit organization.

• In 1952 new bleachers were built on the south side, the chutes were painted, and added attractions to the family event included a daredevil show, zoo train, bigger midway, and an evening entertainment show and dance.

• In 1954 the Ponoka Stampede Association proudly supported the town’s 50th

anniversary celebration, then in 1955 the new event added to the five majors was the Treaty Indian bareback competition. Prize money had now reached $2,400.

• 1956 was a huge year for the Stampede with a record crowd of 10,000 spectators attending the two-day event, which drew 90 of the nation’s top rodeo stars. The first rodeo queen contest was also featured.

• In 1959 28,000 fans took in the rodeo, which had now extended to more days, as well as adding more grandstands, better restrooms, a park area, and a constantly upgraded infield and track. Local household names in rodeo included the Butterfield boys, the Dodds family and the Volds. The first oldtimers rodeo was held in 1980.

So, has it really changed that much over 100 years? The thrills and spills of the sport are still provided to the same huge and knowledgeable crowds by an ever-growing list of talented competitors from throughout the world. These professional athletes face all conditions to challenge the toughest of stock with their best efforts to win just a small piece of the cash and the glory each and every time they enter the infield.

The ongoing growth and success of the Ponoka Stampede has been achieved by the continued dedication and efforts of generations of association members, working very closely with hundreds of super volunteers, and a community that has always been front and centre in keen support of many decades of local rodeo and family fun.

HONORARY PRESIDENT BIG SUPPORTER OF PONOKA STAMPEDE

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE & MIKE RAINONE Quietly and completely by surprise, directors of the Ponoka Stampede and Exhibition Association have given Ed Abt the title of honorary president.

The announcement came at the Tim Hortons in Lacombe where Abt, 85, has his 9:30 a.m. cup of coffee.

Their presence was unexpected but welcome. “For me it was quite a surprise,” says Abt. He noticed a Jones Boys pickup truck in the parking lot and when he looked in the window of Tim Hortons could see three cowboy hats.

“Jones Boys, what the hell are they doing here?” Abt joked.

The decision to make Abt honorary president is something directors leave to the Stampede Association senators because they know much of the rodeo’s history. About a month ago senator Shorty Jones was asked to decide and he thought about it for some time.

“We go back to the senators for those things,” says director Terry Jones.

Abt has been a long-time supporter of the Ponoka Stampede, not only with sponsorship of the halter

for best saddle bronc horse, but he also hauled gravel when the new grandstands were built. He did this for love of the sport and the association.

“I love the cattle for starters and I love the horses. I admire the skill of these horses,” explained Abt. The entire family enjoys coming to the Stampede and Abt’s new position earns him a gold Stampede card. He will be able to come during Stampede Week whenever he wants. His children and his grandkids have created a bit of a tradition by coming to the Stampede. The grandchildren especially appear eager to come along and are eager to know if Abt is taking them.

Director Gary Harbin praises Abt for being an honourable businessman. “If you did business with Ed, you could do it on a handshake.”

Many directors have fond memories of Abt, who would host a yearly roundup of 1,000 yearling calves.

They would spend the day gathering all the animals together.

“It was an event,” stated Jones.

“We always looked forward to the roundup,” added Harbin.

After Florian’s death in 1953, Ed and Lewis formed the longstanding partnership of the Abt Cattle Company, a first class farmranch and feedlot operation that still operates to this day in the same district.

Ed met Mary Mheugh at a district dance near Ponoka in 1960, and they were married about a month later. Mary had graduated from McGill University in Montreal, and then decided to venture to Alberta to accept a job as a psychiatric nurse at the active Alberta Hospital near Ponoka.

Along the way the happy couple welcomed their children Colleen (Lomas) and Michael, while Ed and Lewis continued to operate their successful livestock operations and their families always enjoyed being involved in many district and community activities.

Ed, now 84, has always had a special place in his heart for his horses and his cattle.

Living in Lacombe, he really enjoys going out for coffee and sharing stories with the boys and staying in shape by walking two miles a day. On many occasions he can be found out at Abt Cattle Company “checking the cows,” as well as visiting with children Colleen and Michael, and proudly pampering his six grandchildren.

COWBOY ROD HAY IMMORTALIZED WITH STAMPEDE PAINTING

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE A commemorative poster commissioned by the Stampede Association has behind it the story of a cowboy with an illustrious career.

Rod Hay of Wildwood brings with him a list of accomplishments as a saddle bronc rider including winning the Canadian Saddle Bronc Championship eight times. He qualified for the Canadian Finals Rodeo 19 times and competed at the National Finals rodeo 20 times.

The Ponoka Stampede has always been a fun and competitive rodeo for Hay. “It’s one of my favourite rodeos.”

Throughout his career Hay feels lucky he remained healthy while competing and for being able to follow his dream and do what he loves best — to rodeo. Being a saddle bronc rider brings a different set of challenges than in some of the other rodeo events. “It’s one of the hardest ones to learn, you’re really never perfect.”

He suggests the more a rider knows, the more they have to learn about being a rider. Win or lose, the onus falls on the rider and Hay enjoys that aspect of riding.

“It’s pretty much all on your own back whether you’re going good,” said Hay. “Your wins are always on you and your losses are always on you.”

With no coach and no agent to guide a rider along the way, rodeo is a way to test a person’s ability and strength amid the chaos of a horse trying to get a rider off its back. “There’s more variables going on in the saddle bronc riding than any other event.”

Calf roping is similar in the number of variables but a good bronc rider appears to be at ease. “When a saddle bronc ride is done right, he (the rider) makes it look easy.”

Hay has been a rodeo fan as long as he can remember and he still watches events as much

as possible. One thing he enjoys watching the most is seeing a rider go all out and “really lay it on the line.”

He will be coming to the Ponoka Stampede to view the artwork but also to see his son, Dawson, compete at the Jace Harty Memorial Bull Riding, as well as during the rodeo.

Hay began bronc riding in 1989 and was named the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Rookie of the Year. He was the National Finals Rodeo Aggregate champion in 2007 and also won the $50,000 saddlebronc cheque four times at the Calgary Stampede.

BY AMELIA NAISMITH Ponoka Stampede is more than just a time to cheer your heart out and ride for all your worth.

Art is a major aspect of the whole event and plays a larger part this year than in the past.

Artist Ash Cooper painted the picture featured on the Stampede’s promotional poster; the original will be auctioned off during the Ponoka Stampede’s annual art auction.

This year the auction features 21 pieces.

Proceeds from the sales will cover the cost of holding the event and be added to the Butterfield Scholarship fund. “We only take a percentage, it’s for the artists,” said art show director Inge Sybrandi.

This is the third year of the auction and Sybrandi says although it’s still young it only keeps getting bigger. “Last year we more than doubled what be made the first year, It’s growing very fast.”

The live auction takes place June 30 at the Stagecoach Saloon and starts at 4 p.m. Along with the Ash Cooper original the auction includes paintings and sculptures from several artists.

CATTLE DRAW SUPPORTED ACROSS THE PROVINCE

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE Although you don’t realize it, this is the 20th anniversary of the Ponoka Stampede cattle raffle.

Former director Shorty Jones started the raffle and ran it for two years, past president Rick Wierzba took it over for a year, and president Joe Dodds has been managing the sales of the cattle raffle ever since. Tickets for $50 each but the prize packs a punch; 40 head of cattle or $40,000 cash.

Started as a fundraiser to help build the grandstands, the raffle sells out of the 3,000 tickets each year and it has grossed $1.4 million.

Now funds go to improvements planned by the association, says Dodds. “Everyone feels they are a part of the Ponoka Stampede and that’s what makes it important.”

Compared to most lotteries, the odds of winning are good and most people tend to take the cash as they don’t have the means of dealing with that many cows. Ten tickets are drawn randomly each day for six days and of those 60 tickets, one will be drawn to bring winnings to a lucky winner.

Support for this fundraiser has been overwhelming to Dodds, people have bought 10 books, and others who don’t even live in Ponoka want to support the association’s cause. He remembers one person who already had a ticket drawn but he bought another ticket anyway.

The early bird prize was won by a person from Lethbridge.

“It was probably the highlight of my year as Miss Sundre,” Simmonds added.

Simmonds was crowned May 3 at the Ponoka Stampede chuckwagon tarp auction. Her term as queen is just beginning but she enjoyed the opportunity to attend the Innisfail Daines Rodeo press conference. Highlights included visiting with Jack Daines and meeting the other people in attendance.

But until then she’s excited to grace the rodeos a little closer to home. “My hometown is Sundre; I’m looking forward to that rodeo.”

Even though Ponoka is a ways from where she grew up, being the Ponoka Stampede Queen is something Simmonds holds close to her heart. “Ponoka is one of the largest remaining week-long CPR rodeos. To hold that kind of title is just unreal.”

Not only is Simmonds looking forward to attending the Ponoka Stampede she’s excited to represent its name and essence for her year.

Bruce Harbin, a director on the Ponoka Stampede Association board, also feels Simmonds will be a positive ambassador for the rodeo. “I think Shelby is a great young lady. She carries herself well.”

As soon as Simmonds applied for the Ponoka title she began studying the rodeo circuit with renewed vigour. “When running for rodeo queen you have to be able to back everything about rodeo.”

As queen, Simmonds says she’ll be expected to know the current standings of each rodeo, history on the event as well as general information about each town.

It was the research and previous experience in Sundre that helped her to know what to expect and gain the crown, said Simmonds.

“There’s a bit of pressure. There’s a lot of amazing queens that have held the title. It’s more of an incentive for me to be the best rep I can be.”

Although Simmonds was confident in her abilities as a contestant, the news of being awarded title still overwhelmed her. “I was actually driving home that night and they called me. I broke down crying.”

Simmonds is the first member of her family to pursue rodeo but she’s been infatuated with the queens since she was a little girl.

Growing up, Simmonds was drawn to how kind and genuine the queens were.

“Going to rodeos and seeing these girls lit up and sparkly, they were also a different person.”

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE Keeping the rodeo heritage alive is what the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame (CPRHF) is all about.

Since making the Calnash Ag Event Centre their new home, the organization has made the hall a showcase of some of the finest Canadian cowboys and cowgirls. But animals also grace the hall of fame; those involved in rodeo will say the animal is as important as the competitor.

Receiving the high honour means a cowboy won a Canadian, world title or both, says Judi Wilson, secretary-treasurer for the hall of fame. Another category, the Ranchman’s Legendary Achievement Award, recognizes cowboys who may not have won a title but deserve special recognition for their achievements. “They never won a championship, they need to be honoured.”

Ten directors consider nominees of people in the industry and they discussed 52 for 2013. To become an inductee, 75 per cent of the board must vote in favour of the decision, explained Wilson.

Meetings “can be very passionate discussions.”

Wilson is proud to have the CPRHF’s home where the Ponoka Stampede is held. “Ponoka is the place to have it…Should’ve been there in 1996.”

Despite the large amount of artifacts at the hall, none of them belong to the CPRHF; they are all on loan by the families of the cowboys who are honoured. She feels this would not be possible if the rodeo way of life were not so engrained in the culture.

“Rodeo families are quite close,” explained Wilson. “They will do everything they can to support it.”

Inductees for 2012 were honoured last year and Wilson took a moment to recognize their accomplishments.

Roger Lacasse was a champion bareback rider who was born and raised in Mirabel, Que. He did not speak any English but was “just a great guy and still involved.”

Lacasse won in 1998, 2004 and was a $50,000 Calgary Stampede winner as well.

Cliff Williamson was tie down champion who qualified and competed at the Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) 29 years. He now lives in Arizona.

Rod Warren won the all round Canadian championship nine times and the aggregate award four times at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). He

also won the Canadian Saddlebronc Championship in 2001 and 2005, and now lives in Big Valley.

Mark Roy grew up in Fir Mountain, Sask. before moving to Alberta to take on the rodeo life. He was named Canadian Steer Wrestling Champion in 1991 and 1992, the same year he won world championship at the NFR. Roy retired in 2008 and lives near Calgary.

Elaine Watt from Manitoba became a Canadian champion at the young age of 14. She won her first Canadian Barrel Racing Championship in 1978 and repeated in 1979 and 1982.

“We try to have women every year,” explained Wilson. “They bring a lot of glamour (to rodeo).”

One of the top stock contractors in Canadian rodeo was Harvey Northcott, who was inducted as a builder. “He helped get so many rodeos started…

He would bring stock in just to help out.”

For the animal category, Grated Cocount has a full trophy case, he was named Canadian Champion Bareback horse six times; CFR Champion Horse five times and Best Bareback Horse of the NFR in 2008. Coconut was retired in 2010 where he is now a stud. “He’s making lots of babies that are going to be famous.”

The 2012 Ranchman’s Legendary Achievement recognition goes to saddlebronc rider Bob Goddfrieson, steer wrestler Tom Irvins and bronc rider and steer wrestler Bart Brower.

Voting is one of the most important decisions of hall of fame directors and they take the decision seriously. This year they passed a resolution to keep other nominees on file for next year but also take new nominations.

Inductees for 2013 have been announced and a celebration is planned for Oct. 19 in Calgary. Here they are: • Gina McDougall • Arnold Haraga • Bill Boyd.

OLD WAGON BARNS DEMOLISHED FOR SPACE

BY AMELIA NAISMITH The last of the old barns built in the 1960s on the Ponoka Stampede Grounds have been demolished.

Frank Mickey says the decision to take down the barns was a hard one and moving them to another location was discussed. However, time was of the essence and in the end, quick action was needed.

Mickey says the barns would have been hard to move as both had lean-to structures attached.

The barns were taken down to provide more sponsor and audience parking for the future of the Ponoka Stampede.

The most recently demolished barns originally resided north of their latest location, closer to the grandstands because at the time the Ponoka Stampede Association didn’t own the land where they sat for many years. The property was purchased in 1975 and the barns were moved the following year. “It was crowded up there and we needed more room,” said Mickey.

The barns were originally built for the chuckwagons but they’ve been using the fields south of the rodeo grounds for a while.

Another set of barns was built on Ponoka Stampede land in the 1940s near Highway 53.

They were moved in 1958 close to where the other barns resided then moved again in 1977.

In 1995 they too were taken down.

Those barns held many 4-H and agricultural events. “During the war years they had fairs,” Mickey explained.

The original grandstands also had barns built underneath them, but like the grandstands they’re long gone.

Now only one original building from 50 years ago remains on the Stampede Grounds; a small log structure halfway up the hill of the main entrance.

VOLUNTEERS MAKE PONOKA STAMPEDE POSSIBLE

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE More than 700 volunteers take time out of their busy personal and business lives to help out during the Ponoka Stampede.

They believe in the spirit and purpose behind the largest seven-day rodeo – now eight with the Jace Harty Memorial Bull Riding event added to the roster − in Western Canada, says Joe Dodds, president of the Ponoka Stampede and Exhibition Association. “Without the volunteer basis we could never pull off what we do.”

From the guy flipping burgers to the people checking tickets, the Stampede brings helpers who keep coming back because they want to see this as an event to remember. To celebrate their efforts the association hosts a banquet dinner to thank each and every one of the volunteers.

Dodds was quick to say more people are always needed because the association is always looking for ways to make the Stampede bigger and better. He hopes they can also help out community groups during rodeo such as the Ponoka Legion, church groups and sports clubs.

Some are paid to conduct security and some will run a food booth, which provides a large portion of their budget for the year.

Volunteers always have a positive and welcoming attitude and Dodds is proud of the work they do. Each director has a group of volunteers he works with and director Blair Vold has people who plan their vacations to help.

“Some of my volunteers are third generation.”

He has one volunteer who works in the Australian oil patch who has booked time off specifically to help out. People want to take part in “something that is old, wild and western.”

120-FOOT MURAL HONOURS STRONG WESTERN HERITAGE

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE After two years the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame (CPRHF) is ready to unveil its 120-foot long mural.

The mural is a dedication to the first days of rodeo up to present day stampedes and will make its home at the CPRHF headquarters upstairs in the Calnash Ag Event Centre. Artist Inge Sybrandi was commissioned to paint the epic mural, and Judi Wilson, secretarytreasurer of the hall of fame, is “over the top pleased with the quality of her work. It’s mind blowing let me tell ya.’”

The mural starts out with black and white paintings to keep in line with the old photographs and then starts to slowly move into colour. She feels the unveiling on June 25 will be an even bigger day than their grand opening last year during the 76th Ponoka Stampede.

Wilson anticipates tourists from around Canada and the United States will be making their way to Ponoka to see the mural.

The unveiling will be a closed reception for dignitaries and Wilson is eager to see cowboys’

and sponsors’ reactions during the ceremony.

“I’m happy that it’s done but I can’t wait to see their faces when it’s unveiled,” she stated.

The Canadian Professional Rodeo Association, the Calgary Stampede and Dodge Ram sponsored the mural and they received a sneak preview after Sybrandi revealed three 4 foot by 5 foot portions. Pictures of actual rodeo events were used in the mural as well. “You may just recognize the rider.”

Sybrande finds herself excited and nervous at the same time over the unveiling. Even though people may say they do not care what people think, the artist still worries.

“In reality, everybody cares about what people think.”

“To have your own 120-foot work up there is intimidating to me,” she added.

Sybrandi started out as a pencil artist but wanted to delve into the medium of oil paints and this mural was the perfect opportunity.

Wilson contacted her to do the painting and despite having more experience with pencils, was

“I was in the right place at the right time,” explained Sybrandi.

Despite Sybrandi’s worries, Wilson is confident of the artist’s skills and has had nothing but positive feedback on the mural.

Planning out the painting was a process in itself as Sybrandi’s original drawings did not translate well when enlarged on the 4 foot by 5 foot pieces. The next challenge was planning the right colours to match her plans.

how to mix the colours. “You definitely have to be absorbed into it.”

Each of the 25 pieces presented a different challenge and because of that have several layers of paint. Rather than fight with the panel, Sybrandi painted over it to meet her exacting standards and to give viewers something she can be proud of.

Her hope is people will be able to get a strong indication of the history of rodeo and how it has changed over the years. “The history is important.”

ORGANIZERS AWED AT STAMPEDE TALENT SHOW

BY AMELIA NAISMITH Singers flocked to the auditions of the Ponoka Stampede talent show, and the gusto of their musical stylings could not be shut out.

The talent show finals this year include an additional two acts, jumping the number of performers to 12, instead of the usual 10.

Having a larger lineup won’t change the format, and the competitors will still take to the stage June 26 after the chuckwagon races.

“It’ll just give the audience more songs to be entertained by,” said long-time organizer Karen Kjenner.

The auditions, held May 14 and 15, featured a variety of artists from across Alberta, ranging from girls as young as 12 to older men who’ve been playing most of their life.

“We had one girl who said right out she’d never done this before,” said Kjenner.

“I was impressed with the talent. I thought for small town Alberta it was incredible,” she added.

Kjenner wasn’t the only one impressed with the singers. Competitor Deanna Henderson, part of the only trio to make the auditions, was also awed. “They’re pretty serious people.

Henderson and her sister, Jennifer, made it to the finals of the talent show last year with their rendition of Dean Brody’s Canadian Girls.

This year they were joined by friend Ceanna Prediger and belted out Miranda Lambert’s Mama’s Broken Heart.

“We’ve always been singing together,” said Henderson. “We’re excited to be singing and we’re excited to share that with people.”

Henderson and her singing partners are working on making their performance this year the best one of their lives. “We’re bringing it all this year . . . We don’t want to leave anything behind.”

Another performer, Rob Rabbit of Hobbema, is also changing songs but he’s keeping his final number a secret. Originally Rabbit sang Can’t Break It To My Heart by Tracy Lawrence, one of his biggest influences.

Rabbit has experience with open mike and jam nights but says the Ponoka Stampede talent show is the toughest he’s ever seen.

At first the competition made him nervous but he just told a joke to break the ice.

“There was so much talent, I was almost terrified,” said Rabbit.

“Every year it gets tougher. I’m 30 years old now and the talent seems to get younger. I was surprised they even announced my name.”

Rabbit can sing several styles of music but for the stampede he’ll stick with a country-rock vibe.

GET PREPARED FOR A GRITTY COUNTRY CONCERT

The legendary country-rock, American folk Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is the first headlining act of the Ponoka Stampede, taking the stage June 25 after the rodeo events. Although the band’s played all over central Alberta, the 77th Stampede will be their first visit to Ponoka.

“We love our Canadian fans, they’re the best,” said pianist Bob Carpenter in an interview with Ponoka News.

Last year Nitty Gritty Dirt Band played onequarter of its shows in Canada and they’re especially attracted to the Rocky Mountain region because of its similarities to Colorado. “We sort of feel a kinship to that region,” said Carpenter.

At the Stampede the band is hoping to bring smiles to peoples’ faces and bring back many good memories of times in the past with their songs. “The atmosphere is to have a good time and play good music.”

Carpenter says the band is going to play many of their biggest crowd pleasers to their lineup, including Cadillac Ranch, Fishin’ in the Dark and Mr. Bojangles. Canadians know how to have a good time, says Carpenter; perhaps some good ole’ fashioned line dancing will break out as the sun sets behind the grandstand.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band may also break out a rodeo themed song they haven’t played in a

while, The Other Side of the Hill.

“I think there’s a certain carefreeness of people who go to the rodeo and people who participate in rodeos,” said Carpenter.

He hopes the fans will come out to hear a bunch of great songs they love as well as other songs they recognize but didn’t know were recorded by the band.

“We love what we do and we’ve been doing that since the late ‘60s.” Carpenter says the bands favorite part of playing their music is getting back out on the road and travelling to do it.

PONOKA STAMPEDE HITS THE SMALL SCREEN

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE The Road to the Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) has just become a televised series to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the CFR and Ponoka is one stop on the way.

A three-year contract has been signed with the CFR and Rangeland Media who wanted to cover cowboys as they make their way to the finals, says Kynan Vine, Canadian Pro Rodeo Association administrator. “We can take it across the world…And reach as many people as possible.”

Coverage will be broadcast on television and on the Internet on the last day of five rodeos: TH Daines Ranch Rodeo on June 16,Wainwright Stampede on June 23, Ponoka Stampede on July 1, Medicine Hat Stampede on July 26 and Strathmore Heritage Days Rodeo on Aug. 5. These five rodeos were chosen specifically for their support of the CFR over the last 40 years, says Vine. A one-hour highlight show will be featured on Rogers Media the week after each event.

“Our biggest goal always is to expand our fan base,” explained Vine.

“We’re very excited about this upcoming development.”

This plan will promote the rodeo athletes and the work they do getting to the CFR. His hope is to expand the rodeo coverage to other towns but this first step will give organizers an idea of what their production will need. Vine would also enjoy seeing a sponsor attached to the coverage.

BY AMELIA NAISMITH Country megastar Wynonna Judd is raising her voice at the Ponoka Stampede.

Judd is the second headlining act of the Stampede, and while her latest ventures have led her into the world of television and literature, her country roots haven’t been forgotten — as if they could — nor will they disappoint fans who come out to take in the show.

Throughout her career as one half of the Judds, her own solo career, documentary show, and literary pursuits, Judd has been honest — sometimes painstakingly so — and drawn from a variety of life experiences to make her every project she’s undertaken to the rest of the world.

Judd and her mother, Naomi Judd, took the music scene by storm as a powerhouse duet in the early ‘80s.

After selling more than 20 million albums together, as well as picking up a slew of Grammy, ACM and CMA awards, Judd went on to sell more than 10 million albums on her own.

STAMPEDE VETERAN, NEWER BAND COUNTRIFY ENTERTAINMENT

BY AMELIA NAISMITH As he’s done for the past seven years, Gene Gebo will bring old style country music to the Stagecoach Saloon for the Ponoka Stampede.

Gebo loves being able to play in Ponoka each year because of the people who’ve become fans over the years, and being able to work with the Ponoka Stampede Association board. “Coming to Ponoka on a yearly basis is like coming home,” said Gebo.

“Probably of all the shows and venues I play on a yearly basis, Ponoka is my favourite because of the people,” he added.

Gebo hasn’t released an album since 2007 but he still enjoys making country music with his perfectly suited voice and natural talent for the guitar. When Gebo was 12 years old he learned to play the guitar by ear; after spending his childhood riding calves in make-believe

rodeos.

“Country music is what I really feel,” said Gebo. “Not new country music but I’m talking about country music the radio played in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s.

Gebo feels country music tells a story, which is what draws him to it. Together music and rodeos also tell a story. He says Ian Tyson’s Half a Mile of Hell is a perfect example. “That song tells a story of who was in the chuckwagons originally,” he said, including the Dorchesters.

“Country music is all part and parcel of the country theme,” he added.

Gebo’s played in several rodeos, including the Wainwright Stampede, Daines Rodeo and rodeos across British Columbia. Each one tied in to storytelling atmosphere of country music.

The Ponoka Stampede is well suited for Gebo’s music; the acoustics of the Stagecoach Saloon is another thing he loves about playing the Ponoka

“The music that I do is for all walks of life.” Gebo’s music is played for the older generation and continually makes fans out of the younger ones.

On June 28 and 29 another band will take to the stage and bring on the country part at the Ponoka Stampede beer gardens.

Domino, consisting of Kent Nixon, Scott McKnight, Russ and Luanne Carl, are an Alberta-based country-rock band that’s been playing together for nine years.

The band is hoping to wrap up recording their third album mid-June and once again bring new music to the fans.

In 2011 Domino opened for another great Canadian band, Trooper. They’ve also shared the stage with George Canyon, Julian Austin, Jessie Farrell, One More Girl, Hey Romeo, The Higgins, Jaydee Bixby, The Boom Chucka Boys, Shane Chisholm and Chad Brownlee.

JACE HARTY NAME LIVES ON AT PONOKA STAMPEDE

BY AMELIA NAISMITH As the date draws near, anticipation for the 11th annual Jace Harty Memorial Bull Riding event to kick off Stampede Week continues to build.

“This event has been very special to so many people, with tremendous support of many individuals, sponsors, volunteers and fans,” said event organizer Patrick Lentz.

Combining the memorial and the Stampede ensures the longevity of Jace Harty’s name and what it stands for in the community. “I think the biggest thing with build up is with the volunteers and sponsor support,” said Lentz.

The Facebook page Ponoka Stampede Presents: 2013 Jace Harty Memorial Bull Riding!!! is also gaining a lot of attention for the event. Because the memorial is now the same week as the Ponoka Stampede, Lentz is expecting the audience to grow and many more campers coming to take in the show.

“Basically we wanted to grow the event,” said Lentz in an interview with Ponoka News. The Ponoka Stampede Association is putting up an additional $40,000 for the contestants, which matches the amount the memorial has raised for groups within the community over the last 10 years.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. on June 24, beginning with the steer riders.

“They’ve added a shark cage,” said Lentz. The cage will sit in the

middle of the arena and tickets are going to be raffled over the radio of an opportunity to watch the event from inside the cage.

The Jace Harty Memorial will release some of the top bull riders in North America from the chutes.

Kody Lostroh and Mike Lee are both PBR world champs; Lostroh in 2009 and Lee from 2004. This is the first time either will participate in the memorial.

Aaron Roy and Ty Pozzabon are both top Canadian PBR riders and ranked in the top 10 in the world.

Roy is a three-time Canadian champion and Pozzabon placed second at PBR finals in Saskatchewan.

Many top ranking bulls will be challenging the riders during the event, Pro Line Power, Slash, Remington Country and Butterfly Effect.

Pro Line Power is the number 1 bull in Canada with a 100 per cent buck off rate and Slash is a VJV bull. Those four bulls will be ridden in the championship round.

CrAsh Cooper, rodeo clown extraordinaire, has also added his services to the memorial.

After the bull riding, a cabaret will be held in the Stagecoach Saloon. This year’s live entertainment is a talented Ponoka boy, Jamie Woodfin.

“Our family was very much a part of the process in joining forces with the Ponoka Stampede, and will continue to be involved with the event as it continues to grow ,” said Carrie Harty.

LOCAL MUSICIAN PROUD TO PERFORM

BY AMELIA NAISMITH The Jace Harty Memorial is kicking off the Ponoka Stampede this year and bringing country-rock singer Jamie Woodfin along for the ride.

Although Woodfin hasn’t lived in Ponoka for nearly a decade, he grew up in town, watching the memorial each year. “I was probably at the original Jace Harty Memorial. I think it’s a neat event and it’s for a good cause.”

Woodfin likes to be a part of anything going to a “good cause” and will also be a part of the ATB Financial Outlaw Round Up in addition to the memorial. “For me it’s important to be a part of an event like this, it’s pretty special.”

Woodfin began playing music 16 years ago.

Since then music has been the constant calm in Woodfin’s life as well as a way to relate to other people. “It’s a language that speaks to everyone.

You can interpret it any way you want.”

Along with playing music, connecting people to music is a passion Woodfin has carried for a long time. If he could play every night of the week and have people interested, Woodfin wouldn’t hesitate at the chance.

He especially likes to play country-rock, although he grew up listening to many different styles. “I’m kind of a wide variety guy. Quality is important to me for music.”

Woodfin is excited to be playing back in his hometown and while he’s heading to the studio mid-June to record original for an EP, he plans on playing mostly covers at the memorial. “For an event like this a lot of people want to hear songs they recognize and can party and

Once the EP is finished, Woodfin hopes some of the smaller radio stations will like it enough to reward him with airtime. “I’m just really excited to get the music out there.”

The fans of country music have always been at the forefront of Woodfin’s mind and although he’s been playing music for years, watching them enjoy his music never fails to provide adrenaline rush.

Woodfin will take to the stage in the cabaret following the Jace Harty Memorial on June 24.

CHARRO TURNS INFIELD ACT INTO FAMILY AFFAIR

BY AMELIA NAISMITH The Ponoka Stampede is set to be even more of a family event than usual this year.

Charro Jerry Diaz has performed at the Ponoka Stampede five times before and he loves bringing tradition, history and heritage to the arena.

Charro is a term referring to a traditional horseman from Mexico and Diaz says the art he’s bringing to the Stampede has been passed through this family for four generations.

Diaz’s wife has performed with him in the past but for the first time his son, Nicolas, 9, will also perform, making him a fifth generation performer. Nicolas was six months old the first time he attended the Ponoka Stampede, and he visited again at four years old.

“The rodeo is first class. It’s a very professional production. We’re honoured to be a part of it as a family,” said Diaz. “This year with my son it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Diaz will change up his routines daily to keep his act interesting for the 70,000 people who will see it, and the audience is what he’s looking forward to most. “The loyalty of the people who attend the rodeo, it’s the best outdoor rodeo around the world.”

Diaz and his family are travelling 2,750 miles to bring their family, history and spirit to the Ponoka Stampede.

Another family will also bring their own area of expertise to the arena during the bull riding events. Cousins Scott and Jesse Byrne have been fighting bulls and saving lives at the Ponoka Stampede for a number of years.

The boys embrace their profession, which they’ve grabbed by the horns and are working hard to define. They say there’s nothing wrong with being a rodeo clown, which many bullfighters in the past have been mistaken

and while his stomping grounds mainly consist of the arena — sometimes the air above it — his charm and wit draw people in like family.

BY AMELIA NAISMITH Every birthday has cake and celebrating Canada’s birthday should be no exception.

According to Wes Amendt, director of community services, three cakes will celebrate the day. One will be cut at the aquaplex, another in Hamilton’s IGA parking lot where an annual barbeque lunch and entertainment take place.

The third will be outside Ponoka United Church in Klaglahachie Square during Klaglahachie Fine Art Society’s yearly celebration sponsored by Tim Hortons.

The children’s festival includes games, a petting zoo and bouncy castle among many other activities.

“There’s a little bit more this year,” Richard McKelvie of Klaglahachie Fine Arts Society.

“It’s centred on kids, so anything that’s fun for them,” said McKelvie. “Stampede is more for adults.

We need something to bring people downtown.”

Concerts also take place throughout the event starting with older styles of music moving up to contemporary bands. Two of the groups possibly playing are the Filipino cultural dancing group and rock band Bandolier. However, McKelvie says nothing was finalized as of June 7.

The celebration, although not a picnic, is meant to have that sweet, old-time country feel. “That’s what we’re hoping for,” said McKelvie.

Klaglahachie’s Canada Day is held in conjunction with Parent Link, who will help man some of the booths.

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE One hundred years of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) in Canada will be celebrated in style during the Ponoka Stampede parade this year.

The parade theme was approved by the Stampede Association to help create a greater awareness of the organization and Beth Reitz, executive director of BBBS looks forward to the opportunity.

“We’re really excited about it.”

In keeping with the centennial celebration she hopes this will get them closer to their goal of 100 mentors in Ponoka. They will have a parade float with mentors and the kids they work with. Reitz wants to get the word out that they need more male mentors in their program. Of the 66 mentoring matches, 12 are Big Brothers and she feels men can play an important part, “making a difference in a child’s life.”

The time commitment is one hour a week for the in-school mentoring program and many Ponoka businesses work with mentors to allow them time to help out.

Stagecoach builder Norman Schnell has a new wagon that Reitz and Pat Rowland, the first executive director for BBBS in Ponoka, will ride in during the parade. They also hope to hand out pamphlets and create even more awareness on the Stampede Grounds.

Those wanting to become involved should contact BBBS at 403-783-3112. Special training is provided to those who want to help the program and Reitz offers one piece of advice to a mentor: “Be yourself. Be a good example to your mentee.”

Planning the parade Organizing the Stampede Parade is a job in itself and Stampede director Greg Gordon but he enjoys the excitement that comes with the many different parade floats.

Some of the new entrants this year include the Edmonton Sheriff’s Posse with 10 mounted riders and a stagecoach. The Royal Canadian Artillery Band from Edmonton is also coming and the Calgary Stampede is returning once again. “It’s just fun putting it all together.”

Coming into his 12th year with the parade Gordon has a crew of volunteers who ensure things run smoothly on the big day. About 50 people help out. “They’ve all been there since I’ve been there.”

He knows of some volunteers who have helped for 27 years. He believes the route runs about three and a half kilometres long, when the first float is just returning to the beginning the last float is about to leave.

“That’s the way a guy wants it to work out,” explained Gordon. “We have 8,000 to 10,000 people watch it.”

A live feed has also been set up at the Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury patients who might not be able to come out to the parade and the Town of Ponoka helps by putting barricades up.

Gordon enjoys seeing the floats that honour the western heritage with stagecoaches and cowboys.

“The older the better I like. And noise, lots of noise.”

Representatives from municipalities such as Lacombe, Blackfalds, Clive and Alix come to meet and greet parade attendees. Wetaskiwin MP Blaine Calkins enjoys seeing so many people from his area. The parade goes on rain or shine too.

“In the 11 years I’ve had one shower of rain,” stated Gordon.

CLASSY AFFAIR RAISES FUNDS

BY AMELIA NAISMITH Chicks for Charity remains the classiest affair of the Ponoka Stampede as women fight for the well being of other women.

Each year the champagne breakfast donates funds raised by the event, including live and silent auctions, to a number of charities.

In the three-way split, the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter, Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre’s obstetrical program and Big Brothers Big Sisters Go Girl program, which promotes positive body image and self-esteem in adolescent girls, will all see donations.

Ash Cooper, who’s more involved with the Stampede this year than he’s been in the past, is the charity events new master of ceremonies.

Chicks for Charity’s status is also new this year. “We are now a registered non-profit society,” said president Jane Wierzba.

Two years ago the event donated $10,000 to the women’s shelter and last year raised $20,000. While Wierzba isn’t sure they’ll once again be able to double the proceeds, she’s hoping to be able to match last year’s total.

Last year’s event sold out and by June 11 the charity was ahead in ticket sales. Tickets are $35 and available at the Stampede Office, 403783-0100.

PONOKA STAMPEDE PARADE SALUTES OUR YOUTHS

BY MIKE RAINONE When the gala 77th edition of the Ponoka Stampede parade rolls through the streets of our community on Friday, June 28 at 10 a.m. it will pay tribute to a youthful and traditional national theme.

The salute to the centennial celebration of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization will feature the countless young boys and girls as well as their leaders, volunteers and supporters who have enjoyed being a part of this active and outstanding organization in our town and surrounding districts for 28 years.

The Canadian Big Brothers Big Sisters programs were formed in 1912 and 1913, merged in 2004, and have rapidly grown to thrive and serve in more than 300 communities. In Ponoka the Big Brothers Big Sisters program was introduced in 1985, grew at a rapid pace and has now exceeded 100 matches. There are always many enjoyable year round activities taking place at the spacious Ponoka Youth Centre and at a new agency opened in Rimbey.

Ongoing support of youth and organizations For many decades the Ponoka Stampede Association have always strived to include generations of our youth, their families and local organizations in the annual rodeo, as well as provide support, encouragement and promotion of many other year-round activities. There is no doubt most of the hundreds of ardent volunteers who

have faithfully helped at the Stampede festivities each and every summer started out at an early age and have continued to play a vital role in the ongoing successes and growth of Canada’s largest 7-day professional rodeo.

Here are only a few examples of this annual community effort that has come together in support of the thousands of great fans, talented contestants, and other exciting events and attractions, each and every year for 77 wild, wild years and counting.

• The Ponoka Pool Sharks Swim Club has been involved with the Ponoka Stampede for more than 30 years and looks forward to operating the infield food booth on the grounds each and every day from 7 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. Pool Shark coach Bobby Jo Christensen explained the active competitive swim club is celebrating 37 years of success and training for hundreds of young swimmers from throughout the Ponoka-area and that the longstanding operation of the food booth is one of the major fundraisers that keep their club going strong.

“It takes a great deal of busy volunteer hours from our club members, family, and friends to serve a variety of delicious food throughout the day, and we are certainly well known for having the best breakfast on the grounds.”

• Also taking part in many Ponoka Stampedes has been the Ponoka Air Cadet Squadron #65, who have conducted the 50-50 sales at each

in both the central circuit, and the provincial championships. Down through the years the Stampede has continued to promote events for up and coming young rodeo stars, and while none of us will ever forget those hilarious mutton bustin’ sessions, the tradition of youthful enthusiasm and grit is still let loose at every 6:30 p.m. evening performance with the kids’ Wild Pony Race.

• Over the years many young entertainers from near and far have been given the opportunity of qualifying for a spot in the glitzy evening Stampede Talent Show in front of the main grandstand; while the colorful search for a Ponoka Stampede Queen once again became an exciting part of the 2013 festivities.

• Another wonderful Serving Serv v Ponoka part of the summer Since 1955 Sii classic is the presentation of the Ponoka Stampede Rodeo Challenge at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 29 th in front of the main grandstand. A host of volunteers, including many of the rodeo contestants and performers, kindly come out to give our special kids the thrill of a lifetime. BY MIKE RAINONE Big Brothers Big Sisters is a charitable organization devoted to providing friendship and guidance for boys and girls aged six to 18 years.

Most of these young participants come from single-parent homes and the purpose of the program is to assure each “Little” will be given the opportunity of benefiting, growing and having fun through the presence of a positive role model growing up in the community.

Success and growth from the beginning At the turn of the 20th century, the sudden influx of new settlers into our nation in all areas of the rural and urban population resulted in a desperate need for the establishment of education and recreation programs for the children of these rapidly expanding families. Along the way there would be many boys and girls who, for some unfortunate reason, needed to reach out for a little extra care and the companionship of others to get the best chance to enjoy the precious years of their youth. Because of this vital need, the first Canadian Big Sisters program was formed in Toronto in 1912, followed by the addition of a

similar agency for Big Brothers in 1913, with the organizations merging in 2004.

The colorful history of our Ponoka youth program Around the Ponoka district in the summer of 1985, the need was identified for a program aimed at helping single-parent families.

Family and Community Support Services co-ordinator Barb Nixon contacted Big Brothers of Canada for information about setting up a formal Big Brothers and Sisters support program in this area. As a great deal of preparation would be required to organize this group, the FCSS board hired a staff person to oversee a steering committee for six months, during which time the required steps were implemented to set the wheels in motion for our first Ponoka and Recreational District Big Brothers Big Sisters Society.

Pat Rowland was hired as the executive director of the new community youth organization. Progress and success came quickly for the exciting new program, with matches of Bigs and Littles growing steadily from 12 in 1996, to 35 in 2006, to more than 60 in 2009, now approaching the magic 100 mark, with a new agency also in operation in Rimbey.

As the BBBS Society grew, a new building was required to expand RENTALS their activities, resulting in the acquisition of the bright, spacious and busy Ponoka Youth Centre at 5004-54 Street, just west of the Brick School on Highway 2A. The ongoing success over the years has been led by a dedicated staff and board and directors, who are turn complemented by those countless volunteers who have willingly come forth to serve as mentors or in other roles, as well as a supportive community who believes in the importance of these vital youth programs.

Beth Reitz has served as the executive director of Ponoka Big CLOSED: Brothers Big Sisters Canada Day, since 2006, while the current staff includes Monday, July 1 program director and case worker Morgen Chernick and administrative assistant Nichole Owen. The present BBBS board of directors comprises: Alex West, Paul Spate, Tony Ruijsch, Const.

She has extensive experience performing onstage for Canadian Idol, Pop Stars and Canadian Showcase for Models and Talent. As a single mom, business owner and full time employee – Jennifer’s energy comes from her children, her Amazing Graces. Her wild hair is sure to catch your eye, but her soulful voice is sure to catch your heart.

This buckaroo first strummed a guitar about age 9. It was more a dust collecting device at the time, but he played it till his fingers bled and became calloused.

Completely self taught to play, sing and write Kelly has entered a variety of contests over the years. Despite being professionally employed, he plays daily and still finds time to play local venues in a duo act with a friend. Writing is also a passion and has more than enough material for a CD which he is currently working on.

My name is Jaret Matthews.

I play guitar and sing, and I am a finalist in the Stampede Talent Show. I am 17 years old and I love music. In my spare time all I do is play my guitar and sing in my garage. I hope to do well with my performance, and I wish the other competitors the best of luck in their performances.

troy thomas Troy Thomas started singing at the age of ten.

Thomas comes from a musically talented family; his parents, grandparents and older brother are all musically inclined. One of Thomas’s main musical influences was his older brother, known to many as Tommy Rogers, who pursued a professional musical career in the early 90’s.

Thomas began competing locally at the age of twelve, singing in various local talent shows, including The Ponoka Stampede Star Talent Show and CFCW Star Search. In 1995, Thomas was named first place winner of Northlands Vocal Spotlight. Thomas went on to perform two years consecutively in 1996, 1997 at the Calgary Stampede Nashville North tent. From this performance Thomas won a one song recording which was titled “Is That a Tear”. This song was later recorded by country superstar Tracey Lawrence.Thomas is passionate about a good ole country tune, that tells a story and engages the listener. Thomas grew up listening to and loving traditional county music and sites his muscial heroes as “The Legends” of country music like, George Strait, Conway Twitty and Merle Haggard. After living overseas in New Zealand for the past ten years he is excited to return home to Alberta...... back to his country roots.

sarah cormier “If all you have is one song, sing it loud” is Sarah’s motto when it comes to what she loves doing most. Sarah is 16 years old and currently lives in Red Deer. The first time she fell in love with country music was when her mom handed her a Shania Twain CD, and as a curly haired little girl, she would always play it in her bedroom. She has been singing since and has always loved it. She’s participated in many musical theatre productions. “I’ve fallen in love with being on stage.” Sarah expresses herself by singing, playing, and writing music.

We are Deanna Henderson (19), Jennifer Henderson (16), and Ceanna Prediger (16). All three of us were raised right here in Ponoka, Alberta. The talent show audition was our first time performing for a crowd as a trio, and now we are addicted to the stage! It is a blessing to be given the opportunity to bring down the house in our hometown at the Ponoka Stampede; we cannot wait to give it all we’ve got! A huge Thank You to everyone who makes this competition possible. We are excited to share our love of music with anyone who will listen!

ASHLEY MCINTOSH

Ashley McIntosh is a 17-year-old singer, songwriter and guitar player.

She lives in Red Deer, Alberta, and attends Notre Dame Secondaire High school. She was born on January 13, 1996 and has been singing for as long as she can remember. Music is her biggest interest and she works on it anywhere from two to six hours a day. During the 2011 CGMA (Country Gospel Music Association), Ashley won the Canadian Silver Heart Award for Teenage Performer of the Year. Her biggest aspiration is to work hard to earn herself a recording contract and from there begin a career as a professional entertainer.

olivia wik Olivia Wik is a 17 year old singer/ songwriter who delivers a unique, modern country sound. This young songstress has entertained at the Calgary Stampede, Big Valley Jamboree, Westerner Days, Summer Send Off, Canadian Finals Rodeo, and showcased at the 2012 CCMA’s ‘Diamonds in the Rough’ stage. Olivia has penned many country songs with 2 songs featured on a Detroit PBS TV Series, and has written with North American songwriters including Larry Wayne Clark, Tim Taylor, Troy Kokol and Willie Mack, among others. Writing and performing country music is Olivia’s passion and she’s thrilled to be part of the Ponoka Stampede Talent Show.

Alex dion Alex Dion of Frog Lake Alberta was born in Elk Point AB August 21/1977. Falling in love with music at such a young age it was no surprise to see him pursue it in his life. Learning to play at the age of 14 Alex has played numerous shows in his life however says that the Ponoka Stampede is his favorite. He loves the Stadium that the Showcase is held and the energy of the Ponoka Crowd. “Its always such a great turnout” Alex says. This is Alex’s fourth time playing the Stampede and he is determined to give the best performance of his life. “I want to do something different and really stand out from the rest, and show that I am a true performer” Alex states. Determined more than ever Alex says this is the year a professional album will surface with songs written from the hearts of he and his wife Flower of 9 years. Alex’s final statement says “ Hard work, confidence and positive thinking is key in musical success and I am ready to take the musical Bull by the Horns, I guarantee my name will be known around the world through music”

Sydney Mae Sydney Mae a 12 year old Singer/ Songwriter originally from Grande Prairie now living in Cochrane, AB, first started singing at the age of 4 with her Mom and sister at the Peace Country Gospel Jamboree, the same stage that’s also hosted Paul Brandt and High Valley. Music is something that I’ve always loved. I enjoy taking in as many open jam sessions and open mic nights as I can. If it weren’t for my friends asking me to play and sing for them and my families constant encouragement I never would’ve had the confidence to take it this far. This is definitely, by far the most unique talent show I’ve ever entered! Not to many people can say they’ve had the chance to play with a live professional band (backing them up) to perform on the exact same spot as where Dwight Yoakam, Dierks Bentley and Charlie Major once performed! BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE Longtime attendees of the Ponoka Stampede look forward to more than just rodeo action, the Ponoka Farmers’ Market is a great draw for many campers and residents.

“Vendors are coming to no end.

I’m really getting a full house of variety,” says Donna Merrill, farmers’ market manager.

For three days during the Stampede, more than 110 tables are going to be full of all sorts of crafts, clothing, baked goods and other items. June 25 and 26 the market will open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and June 27 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Merrill is unsure what to do if more vendors inquire about joining during Stampede Week.

“If they phone, it’s outside, bring your own table,” she joked.

A new woodworking vendor will show off his crafts and all the fruits and vegetables a person could want. A leather worker will be selling their finest wallets, belts and purses that bring a certain “cowgirl finesse” to the market.

Merrill is pleased they changed

to being open three days from two days a few years ago as vendors get more exposure during the busy Ponoka Stampede Week.

“Sometimes a crowd comes through and then they look and then they come back and buy,” she said.

One of the benefits of this farmers’ market is the repeat customers. Merrill received a call from a woman who lives in Ontario. The lady’s family has been coming to the Stampede for some time now and looks forward to seeing what vendors have in store for her.

There is also a new lunch counter for those looking to buy a homecooked lunch.

Merrill enjoys seeing residents, campers and midway riders coming down the market. She and the other bakers are busy too.

“We prepare quite heavily for the Stampede.”

The market has also started a 50/50 ticket draw, every third ticket has its match hidden at a table.

Winning numbers are entered into a draw every month for the chance to win a $50 ticket.

LOCAL “OUTLAWS” RAISE FUNDS FOR KIDS IN SPORTS

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE The Ponoka Stampede wouldn’t be a rodeo if there weren’t any outlaws.

In keeping with the spirit of the Wild Wild West, Ponoka’s ATB Financial branch has for the past four years “arrested” members of the community to raise funds for a local cause.

The beneficiary this year will be the KidSport Ponoka chapter and chairperson Jackie MacGregor could not be more pleased. “We’re pumped! It’s such a great event.”

She had asked the ATB Outlaw Roundup committee to consider KidSport as this year’s theme and feels being a new chapter helped the cause.

“They like to support kids in our community,” stated MacGregor. “Our first goal is to get awareness of what KidSport is.”

Families who want to get their children into sports but cannot afford the fees will now have an opportunity to apply for assistance. Up to $300 will go toward paying for the registration fees of organized sports such as hockey, soccer and volleyball.

KidSport Ponoka’s second goal is to continue raising the money to help families and MacGregor is grateful for the support already given.

“Families are already seeing the benefit of us being here,” she added.

The volunteers are in place, the funds are growing and KidSport is ready to start helping

families. ATB organizer Sharon McLennan is proud of the work their bank has done to bring the Outlaw Roundup to town.

More than $67,000 has been raised in the last four years supporting Ponoka Youth Centre, Victim Services, Splash Parks and the Broncs Football team last year. The organizing committee looks at all the applicants and they consider “something that definitely needs a hand.”

So far 77 town and county of Ponoka kids have used the KidSport program without a local chapter, explained McLennan.

Being an outlaw requires a certain finesse in asking for funds and the committee takes that into consideration when asking a person to be a part of the event. “This in particular will be very easy for people to contribute to,” McLennan added.

The Ponoka RCMP also help out during the busy week of the Ponoka Stampede by arresting the outlaws and bringing them to the Ponoka Stampede Breakfast on June 26 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Outlaws will then make phone calls or talk to friends to seek the necessary funds for freedom. McLennan advises setting a goal and sticking to it.

Last year one person raised $3,000. “ We set the stage…But they do the majority of the work.”

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE Food banks have their busiest time during the holiday season but what about spring and summer months?

Donations slow down for food banks during the summer vacation as many people take time off.

Encana is working with the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) to tackle the gap in donations. Anywhere on the WPCA tour that Encana operates there will be a Race Against Hunger truck to accept donations of cash and food for the food banks, says Don Letwinetz, Encana community relations advisor. “I think it’s important to concentrate on our local (food bank).”

Food is a great benefit to the food bank but cash is also useful as the organization has strong buying power for groceries, added Letwinetz.

Chuckwagon drivers are helping out as well; on June 28 eight drivers will take turns bagging groceries at Hamilton’s IGA and try to help raise money or food by bagging groceries. This gives fans a chance to meet a driver and donate to a worthy cause. Shoppers can buy a $2 or $5 sticker for the program and meet their favourite chuckwagon driver.

Donations at the Encana truck can also have the name of the driver on the bags, which will add to their tally. Mark Sutherland won the title of Food Driver of the Year with $4,035 raised. This is the fourth year of the fundraiser and last year raised $20,615.55 and 901 pounds of food just in Ponoka.

“We reap the benefits from the folks that come to town and all their generosity,” stated Letwinetz.

Giving back to the communities on the chuckwagon tour is important to Arnold McKernon, president of the WPCA. “The communities mean an awful lot to us.”

People can donate money or food at the Encana truck or at IGA during the Ponoka Stampede.

Encana matches cash donations up to $10,000 or $2 per pound of food donated.

BY AMELIA NAISMITH For those who don’t want to miss a second of Stampede action, the announcers are the ones to keep your ears tuned on.

It’s the role of rodeo announcers to keep the audience both informed and entertained on what’s happening inside and outside the arena; as well as thank the sponsors many, many times. “The sponsors are what makes the world go round,” says announcer Tim Edge.

Edge and the other announcers of the Stampede, Les McIntyre and Dr. Lynn Phillips, must also try to take the spectators minds off the contestants and onto the production of the event as a whole. “I try to bring up the ambience a little bit.”

While the riders are focusing on the competition — and winning — it’s up to the announcers to bring the intensity, the passion and the emotion the cowboys and girls are feeling right up into the bleachers.

Whenever there’s a lull in the rodeo action the announcers are there to fill in the silence and Edge says it’s not difficult to keep the verbal flow going, especially at the Ponoka Stampede.

The Stampede is the largest seven-day outdoor pro rodeo in Canada with a 77-year history filled with funny stories as well as some of the top contestants, stock and spon-

sors in the world.

“You’ve got a lot to talk about, there’s always something happening,” said Edge.

Public speaking has always come naturally to Edge but it’s even easier now that he’s settled into the rodeo announcer routine.

“It’s a comfortable atmosphere to be around.”

“It’s by far the biggest, coolest, best rodeo in Canada. It’s an absolute dream to address the people who come to that rodeo, in my role,” he added.

For years Edge lived in Paris and worked at Disneyland as both a rider and actor. He grew up in Rimbey and loves being able to work a rodeo that practically spills over to his hometown with the amount of people that attend each year.

At the 75th anniversary of the Ponoka Stampede Edge did advertising and commercial production as well as work with the contract acts. “At that point I started announcing in an on-the-ground roll.”

“Blair (Vold) and the boys were good enough to give me an opportunity to show what my production company could do.”

Edge says one of the top rodeos in the world belongs to one of the top rodeo associations. “Ponoka’s board and committee are just full of down-to-earth people.”

Four thoroughbred horses, one driver and a chuckwagon with two supporting outriders; multiply that by four and you’ve got yourself a chuckwagon race.

For six nights during the Ponoka Stampede, rodeo fans can enjoy the action of the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) races.

As racers near the finish line a rumbling thunder can be heard from the thousands of fans stomping their feet on the metal grandstands. People love the organized chaos a chuckwagon race brings.

This form of racing is part of our western heri-

tage, says Arnold McKernon, WPCA president.

“Our guys work extremely hard and they like doing it.”

A week of hard driving culminates in the top four racers competing for bragging rights and the $50,000 Tommy Dorchester “Dash for Cash.”

With so much at stake the tension in the air is almost palpable.

To help drive interest, the WPCA and its drivers have started using Twitter and the Internet; McKernon has heard Albertans working in Australia will tune into their online feed of the races. “(I) have fun seeing the fans interact during events,” he added.

AG EVENT CENTRE HOUSES PONOKA STAMPEDE EVENTS

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE Enhancing rodeo week during the Ponoka Stampede is the Calnash Ag Event Centre.

Having the two groups work together during the Stampede is something Terry Jones, Ponoka Ag Event Centre Society (PAECS) president, looks forward to. In keeping with that idea the Alberta Mounted Shooters Association will compete at the ag event centre and the winners will be able to perform on the Stampede grounds June 28 (more on the shooters on page 34).

“The crowd really loved it last year,î said Jones. ìItís part of that Wild, Wild West of 36.”

The idea is to give fans a full rodeo experience.

“It’s just going to bring a new avenue of people in.”

People who want to see more rodeo action in the morning can come to the ag event centre for just that reason.

“It just works back and forth,” added Jones.

The building is in its second full year of operation and Jones looks forward to the future potential of the ag event centre working with the Ponoka

Stampede. He complimented the staff for their work in keeping things running well.

He also feels PAECS and the Stampede Association complement each other during a busy week.

Overflow parking from the campground can go to the ag centre land. There are 40 electric hook-ups for trailers and room for more trailers and horses.

People who are waiting for the midway rides to start can also check out the morning events at the ag event centre.

Cattle penning will follow the shooters in a similar format as last year, and Jones hopes more events can be added to the ag event centre in the future.

Fans can visit the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, which has made its home upstairs at the ag event centre. Artifacts from cowboys and cowgirls over the years are on display so people can get a taste of athletesí western roots. See page 9 for more on the hall of fame.

Although change may be difficult to understand, McKernon sees these media forms as “the way of the future. It’s just a new dimension for us.”

Being a driver takes more than its fair share of steel and grit. The power of four thoroughbred horses is not taken lightly and a chuckwagon driver has to know his surroundings and what the animals are doing.

“These guys have to know when to let ’em go and when to watch the track, said McKernon. “Those guys are really working and the horses are too.”

He usually comes to Ponoka a week before the Stampede begins to make sure all the plans are in place for the week of racing. “The Ponoka Stampede takes me back to when I was a young boy.”

Many families spend their vacation time in Ponoka and McKernon has seen people grow up over the course of 20 years who keep coming back every year. Even though he is busy organizing this time of year, he enjoys promoting the sport and coming to Ponoka.

“It’s like Christmastime for me. It’s a special time of the year.”

Change is something the WPCA is not afraid of either, the group has just approved an animal Code of Care for horses. The document addresses transport, health and fitness, exercise and even track and infield conditions.

MOUNTED SHOOTERS BRING A TASTE OF THE WILD WILD WEST

The Alberta Mounted Shooter’s Association (AMSA) is hosting a competition at the ag event centre June 25 to 27 with the top three contestants having the opportunity to show their stuff June 28 at the Stampede Grounds.

“Ponoka is a big name…We are just pleased that we get to show what we like to do,” says Stephan Stotzem, president of the association.

Mounted shooting is one of the fastest growing equine sports, offering members a the combination of marksmanship and horsemanship skills. Shooters use real .45 calibre Colt revolvers with course black powder; used to shoot balloons over a set course.

“It’s a fairly fast growing sport,” added Stotzem.

Special clinics are held for shooters and horses to get used to the noise that comes from firing off the revolvers. To get horses accustomed to the loud noise, trainers start with cap guns and

Training horses takes a fair amount of patience as the animals need time to become familiar with not only the sound of the guns but also of the popping balloons.

“Most of them pick up fairly quick after that,” he said.

Registration for the competition takes place a few days before they begin and Stotzem looks forward to the added exposure of being at the Ponoka Stampede. “Ponoka’s a pretty big stage.”

Despite using revolvers loaded with blanks, the AMSA members must still ensure proper registration and transport of the firearms.

But shooting blanks also has its benefits.

“It is a privilege to us because we’re not bound by a shooting range,” explained Stotzem.

Safety is still an important part of the group and they follow an important set of rules when operating firearms. The Colts have a range of 25 to 30 feet and must

be inspected by a firearms officer to ensure they operate safely; shooters must also show their understanding of how the revolvers work.

For the last seven years the AMSA has been adding members to its roster and is affiliated with the Cowboy Mounted Shooters Association in the United States. There are four Canadian clubs who compete with each other.

BUTTERFIELD SCHOLARSHIP RECOGNIZES RODEO KIDS

BY AMELIA NAISMITH Every year the Ponoka Stampede gives rodeo cowboys and girls one more venue to ride hard for their passion and for the last three years the association has been giving students of the community a chance to also follow other dreams.

Each spring, two students from Ponoka Composite High School are rewarded with $500 each in the name of Tom Butterfield.

The Tom Butterfield Scholarship was developed through the combined efforts of Gary Harbin and Inge Sybrandi, an artist living in Ponoka.

“It’s supposed to go directly, mainly to the Broncs Academy,” said Sybrandi.

This year the scholarships were given to Tamara Bonnett and Jordan Pritchard.

When the scholarship first began, a pot of $10,000 was presents created by Sybrandi and the calendars she created and sold for four years.

PONOKA STAMPEDE PARADE GUIDELINES 1. Entries should be at the Arena marshalling area before 9:00 a.m. to be judged.

Entries should be totally assembled and participants ready to be judged.

2. The Parade Committee reserves the right to refuse access to the Parade to any entry deemed unsuitable, or dangerous.

3. An ambulance and tow truck will be on standby in case of any emergency.

4. Entries must not deviate from the established parade route unless directed by a police of¿cer or parade of¿cial.

5. No smoking or alcoholic beverages are allowed on parade entries.

6. Items such as candy, balloons, etc. may be given out to spectators by “Walkers” who accompany the Àoat and hand out treats from a safe distance by using small bags or pails. There is to be NO THROWING OF CANDY from Àoats for safety’s sake.

7. All entries should be 80% decorated and decorations securely fastened.

8. Individuals driving quads or garden tractors on the parade route must be over the age of 14.

9. Along the parade route you may encounter travelling parade marshals who have the authority to ask you to slow down, speed up, etc.

BY AMELIA NAISMITH Well seasoned veterans, cowboys competing at their Ponoka Stampede for the first time, and every level in between will grace the Stampede Grounds for big money and entertainment this year.

Many competitors grew up in Ponoka and hold the Stampede’s competition in special esteem.

“It’s definitely my favourite rodeo, being a home town rodeo,” said bareback rider Jake Vold.

Vold grew up watching the legendary cowboys competing at Ponoka and dreamed of the day he’d also enter the arena.

This is Vold’s fourth year competing and he says to keep his hat — and his head — on straight it has to be treated seriously. “It’s just another rodeo. It’s still extreme. You have to treat it like any other rodeo.”

Barrel racer Cranna Roberts has been riding at Ponoka since 2006 but was a part of the grand entry from 1995 to 2002.

“It’s always an exciting rodeo to go to. It’s kind of a home town feeling.”

“If you do good it kind of sets you up for the rest of the year,” she added.

The Ponoka Stampede is Canada’s largest sevenday rodeo, a CPR sanctioned events, and magnificent on its own. Many of the competitors are also gunning to attend the annual Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton; doing well at Ponoka is a huge step in that direction.

Like many cowboys and girls, Roberts visits the gym to get Ponoka Stampede ready. Feeling strong physically is also good mental preparation.

Even with the preparation she still feels the nerves come race day.

“I think if you didn’t it wouldn’t be exciting anymore. There are a lot of challenges but that’s what keeps it exciting.”

For Roberts, challenges come in the form of balancing rodeo life with the rest of life. This year she’ll also be riding a new horse, Miss West.

Miss West is a younger horse Roberts’ has been seasoning and taking to a few rodeos.

Team roper Jordan Dodds is in his fifth or sixth year competing at the Ponoka Stampede. “I’m just looking forward to it. It’s going to be a great rodeo. It’s huge, there’s everything; huge money, the best stock.”

This year the stock is coming from Vold Rodeo Co., Calgary Stampede, Northcott, Franklin, Outlaw Buckers, Kesler’s, Havens, Riata Ranch and Wilkinson.

Dodds’ family is a long-time rodeo family and he also grew up dreaming of the grounds. “My uncle won it. I hope to win it one day too.”

“I hope to have a great year and go to Edmonton,” he added.

Klay Whyte is another team roper who loves the Ponoka Stampede. “It’s the best rodeo in Canada, if not the world. The atmosphere there’s just awesome.”

As heeler, Whyte hopes to place high with his partner, Jeff Robson. A good part of that is mental preparation. For Whyte it

means visualizing himself at the Stampede doing well. “If you do good in Ponoka it gives you a good shot at qualifying for Edmonton.”

Ben Ramey, steer wrestler, didn’t start rodeoing until he was 13 and steer wrestling until 16.

Now at 25, he’ll be competing at the Ponoka Stampede for the first time.

Ramey was born and raised in Ponoka as a town kid. “I always wanted to rodeo.”

Qualifying for Ponoka, Ramey says he finally feels accomplished. “It means a lot. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time.”
