A horse, goat and a pack of pooches had fun in the sun on Moncton Street Monday for the Steveston Salmon Festival parade, which also drew a few spectators. An estimated 30,000 people lined the parade route and upwards of 80,000 people attended the 68th annual Canada Day celebration that once again proved to be a hit. “It was a spectacular, spectacular day,” said spokesperson Janice Froese. “The general atmosphere this year was just amazing. People were really showing their pride and everyone seemed to be happy and having

a great time.” The parade—and its 106 entries— went off without a hitch, as did the opening ceremony to begin a day of events in Steveston Park. Singersongwriter Andrew Allen rocked the stage as revellers chowed down on the festival’s food offerings. Chow mein proved popular, as did the alder wood salmon. Both were sold out by early afternoon. And, as a testament to the festival’s popularity, other food vendors also ran short on supplies as the festivities wound down at 5 p.m. Festival-goers also crowded the carnival and flocked to the new tram barn and Steveston Education Garden. The trade show, craft fair and children’s festival also packed them in. Whether it was sunny skies or a holiday piggybacking a weekend, there was something sweeter in the air this year, said Froese. “If people had fun, if people had a good time, a great day, then we did our job well.”
