In the District of Invermere in particular the local deer population — and whether or not to deal with it by culling, by hazing, by other means or not at all — has become a contentious hotbutton issue.

Deer hazing (also called aversion conditioning) essentially means using trained dogs and dog handlers to chase deer out of urban areas and, by so doing, motivating them to stay out.

“It is clear that local governments need more options in dealing with urban deer,”

said Mr. Macdonald in a press release. “ I believe that we need to modernize the Wildlife Act to allow deer hazing in certain circumstances.”

Mr. Macdonald is the opposition critic for forests, lands and natural resource operations.

As many of you may have noticed, Lake Windermere was murkier then usual after the heavy rains at the end of June. On the Ambassadors' weekly sampling trip, we found the turbidity (murkiness) to be 53.6 NTU at the south end of the lake. At that end of the lake, the usually clear lake water looked like chocolate milk. How does this compare to other years? Elevated turbidity levels are natural and commonly occurring, especially during snowmelt and rainfall events: both which have occurred recently within our watershed. However, last year, we experienced vastly higher turbidity than recorded during monitoring between 20062010 and the same has been seen this year. The highest turbidity levels at the south end of the lake were 3.48 in 2010 and 14.4 in 2011 and then jumped to 44.4 after the Fairmont landslide in 2012.

want to point out that the Invermere Deer Protection Society doesn't feel it's needed at this point, we just want it as an option,” he said. “We maintain there isn't a problem with deer in town; it's a problem with people who have bad attitudes about wildlife.”

Invermere residents can and should be taught how to properly behave around and co-exist with deer, said Mr. Kazakoff.

“We're really supportive of more options,” said Invermere mayor Gerry Taft, adding there's a lot of ambiguity from province surrounding the use of hazing or other non-lethal options — some technically not allowed under the Wildlife Act — for dealing with deer and that some clarity would help.

“The reality for the District of Invermere is we don't have any Crown land bordering the district, so it's unlikely that even if the hazing is allowed to go ahead, that it would be a viable option,” said Mr. Taft.

“In general terms it's great to have hazing as an option, but the reality is it's not a silver bullet.”

The district has many fences around homes and other buildings and the lack of public land means there's really nowhere to push the deer into, said Mr. Taft, adding Waterton town has no fences and plenty of surrounding public land (being a national park) and even Kimberley has decent-sized tracts of Crown land nearby.

“It's a different scenario here in Invermere than in Waterton,” he said. “The reality is there's no easy answer.”

Wildlife that makes itself comfortable in human habitats usually proves troublesome — an ongoing problem that a large herd of sheep have presented to the Village of Radium.

"We're losing close to ten per cent of the herd every year on the highway," Alan Dibb told The Valley Echo.

Mr. Dibb works as a Wildlife Biologist for Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay National Parks of Canada.

Radium residents have also complained about an excess of sheep stool, which they say is causing odours, health concerns and visual discomfort.

Rather than culling or hazing the sheep out of town, Parks Canada is taking a proactive approach by attempting to lure the sheep into ideal habitats.

Parks Canada has undertaken an experimental approach called the Redstreak Restoration Project, which will address three objectives. The three goals of the group are to "enhance Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep habitat by restoring grasslands and open forest structure," "to reduce dangerous forest fuel levels in and around Redstreak Campground," and, "to create a fire guard on the east side of the Redstreak Campground."

The first objective mentioned is "partially motivated by an interest in providing habitat options for sheep away from highways so that sheepvehicle collision rates might be reduced," Mr. Dibb said.

He said that by opening the forest up and removing obstacles, Parks Canada is mimicking the natural process of fire to promote growth among plants that are important to bighorn sheep habitats.

"Basically, we just have this thick conifer forest, full of pine, spruce and fir trees that developed and grew quite thickly, and it reduces the amount of grass, herbaceous vegetation and shrubs that can grow in the forest."

Invermere and the splash park project are paired against Pemberton, B.C., which is seeking the award to help rebuild its community BMX bike track.

The restoration efforts are an attempt to coax the sheep into congregating in

a more suitable habitat than the Village of Radium. Granting the sheep a new place to live has proven a challenge, as the village has provided the herd favourable living conditions.

"They're attracted to the high-quality forage that's available in town, like the grass on the golf course and the residential lawns," Mr. Dibb said. "There may also be an effect of trying to avoid predators by being in the townsite."

Curious hikers who would enjoy checking out the restoration area can find it by taking the Redstreak Road towards the Redstreak Campground. The trail starts in behind the campground.

Hikers are best to ask for directions from the campground kiosk, Mr. Dibb said.

The splash and spray park would be on Kinsmen Beach and is expected to cost $320,000. The Rotary Club committed $50,000 to the project and, so far, has fundraised an additional $20,000 for it. Invermere and the other 19 finalists were announced on Sunday, June 30th.

The winner of each match-up is determined by online voting, which occurs on a different day for each match-up, always starting at noon and running for 24 hours.

Voting for the Invermere splash park-Pemberton BMX track match-up will start Thursday, July 11th at noon at www.kraftcelebrationtour.ca. All winning communities will also host a live TSN broadcast.

This is the first year Wildsight's Classroom with Outdoors for Grades 4 to 7 has been popular in the Invermere area. The program was delivered five times in three different schools, including Edgewater Elementary, Windermere Elementary and JA Laird. Now in its 13th year, Classroom With Outdoors is an experiential, field tripbased program designed to connect students with the ecosystems in their own back yards. Another budget and another billion dollars short. B.C. government revenues have fallen $900 million short of February's budget projections. In recent weeks, the BC Liberals have been blasted with scathing criticism over a full spectrum of issues, from an increase in migration out of B.C., to budget cuts to skills training, to deteriorating financial conditions.

Meanwhile, Premier Christy Clark stands strong, maintaining the June 2013 budget is a balanced one that forecasts surpluses for the next three years. One thing is for certain. Had the May election turned out differently with the NDP forming government, the amount of criticism levelled at that government's budget would have been pretty much on par with what we're seeing now. Different political parties taking stabs at solving the problematic finances around budgets — whether they be provincial or federal — seems to be what government is all about these days.

Although The Beatles had an inspiring message with their song, All You Need is Love, it's the Swedish group ABBA that hit the nail on the head in their hit Money, Money, Money: "I work all night I work all day to pay the bills I have to pay." While this statement isn't totally accurate (hopefully), it does convey the sense of frustration many British Columbians are feeling these days, Whether it's being able to pay for post-secondary education, purchasing real estate, having health care needs met or saving for retirement, people simply want assurance that their long-term financial objectives will be met. With revenue down and one third of the provincial budget taken up by running our health care system — by 2015-2016, it will be more than 42 per cent — it's no wonder medical service premiums are going up, again, starting January 1st, 2014. By increasing premiums by about four per cent, the government expects to generate $23 million. Meanwhile, cigarettes, harmful chemical additives in food, and toxic household cleaning products continue to be sold en masse to an unsuspecting public. Until government recognizes — with tougher legislation — that a healthy economy is only possible with healthy consumers, only then might health care costs drop, giving a balanced budget a "whole"-istic new meaning.

Clark resumes Campbell arrogance Call it the Beach Blanket Budget.

Despite having to campaign once again to win a seat in a byelection, Premier Christy Clark has ordered the legislature to sit without her through most of July to pass the budget that was tabled before the election.

This rare summer session ensures a couple of things. First, there will be less time for real financial results to contradict the rosy predictions made by Finance Minister Mike de Jong in February.

Second, it ensures that there will be minimum public attention paid to the deliberations, as people focus on their summer vacations and put the business of running the province aside again.

der former premier Gordon Campbell, calls for MLAs to assemble in October and November, to consider legislation, after a spring devoted to the budget and ministry spending.

This was a serious reform that went along with four-year scheduled elections. But Campbell soon abandoned this noble approach, with fall sessions dwindling to a few days to deal with urgent issues or disappearing altogether.

I expected Clark to reverse that after she led the party to victory in May and consigned the Campbell era to the history books. Open, accountable government and all that.

So why the summer session? I’m inclined to agree with NDP house leader John Horgan, who meets privately with de Jong in his role of government house leader to thrash out schedules. Here’s Horgan’s message to Clark and her government as he emerged from the latest meeting:

“You ran on a platform that you claimed you were ready to implement. And what we’re getting instead is, ‘let’s jam ’em in here while the media’s on holidays, while people are at the beach thinking about other things. We’ll pass our bogus budget and then we’ll see you in February’.”

Is the budget accurate, or “bogus,” or somewhere in between? They’re always projections, so that can’t be determined until next year. But the proposal to keep the increase in overall spending to less than two per cent, with nearly all the increase going to health and education, is difficult to accept.

During his time, Campbell topped the Fraser Institute’s ranking of most fiscally responsible premiers, limiting spending growth to 4.4 per cent. During those same years, average provincial economic growth

A new wildlife program in the valley Wildlife Sightings in and around our communities: • At least two different black bears have been seen in Radium Hot Springs consuming garbage from dumpsters and obtaining food filled coolers from campers.

• A black bear has been spotted near Sinclair Creek trail in Radium Hot Springs.

This is the third year the BC Conservation Foundation (BCCF)’s Bear Aware program has been running in Invermere and Radium Hot Springs. This year the Bear Aware program is being delivered by WildSafeBC, a program developed to reduce human-wildlife conflicts through education, innovation and co-operation.

WildSafeBC was launched in May of this year with the goal of keeping wildlife wild and communities safe. The program fits well in this community since we don’t just have conflicts with bears; there are also deer, sheep, cougars, skunks, coyotes and many more wildlife that may become urbanized.

The last two years Bear Aware has worked at reducing bear conflicts by managing attractants such as garbage, birdfeeders, and fruit trees. These bear attractants are also attracting other wildlife. For instance, birdseed falls on the ground, attracting mice therefore potentially attracting coyotes and deer have been known to consume garbage, compost and birdseed.

I would take this opportunity to talk about a more prevalent animal in the valley — deer. This time of year it’s especially important to keep your distance

was only 4.1 per cent, meaning that under the supposedly tight-fisted, tax-cutting Campbell, government continued to grow to more than 20 per cent of gross domestic product.

Clark has indicated several times since her surprise election win that she intends to make government smaller. That’s the difference between her “core review” of government programs and the one conducted by Campbell in the painful first years of his mandate.

This is why I mentioned last week that one of the more significant instructions given to Clark’s cabinet ministers was to examine turning the Liquor Distribution Branch into a separate corporation with its own board of directors.

That in itself may slightly increases the size of government. But it could be a preliminary step to selling the whole thing off and reducing the government’s role to taxing and regulating booze sales.

You can imagine how that would go over with the NDP, with former liquor store union boss George Heyman among the loudest opposition MLAs. This is the kind of change that should be debated in public, not by press release.

Why investors aren’t biting on a BC oil refinery?

Editor's note: This article may be of interest to readers given that The Valley Echo is owned by Black Press, of which David Black — the proponent of the Kitimat oil refinery — is the founder and chairman.

Newspaper baron David Black, who is proposing to build a large oil-refinery in Kitimat, is reportedly puzzled by the lack of interest by potential Canadian investors.

The answer to his puzzlement is fairly straightforward: in free (and even free-ish) markets, capital flows to its most efficient use. Compared to gains that can be had from new oil production, expected gains from new refineries are scant these days.

Most of the growth in Canada’s oil production will come from continued expansion in the capacity to produce raw, and in some cases upgraded, bitumen from the Alberta oil sands. This requires tremendous amounts of capital including the additional cost of implementing new technologies to reduce on-site natural gas consumption and to mitigate environmental impacts. Oil refineries, which also require large amounts of capital, offer only limited profit margins and therefore, aren’t very attractive to investors at this point. It’s simple competitiveness.

Mr. Black’s opinion that shipping refined petroleum products from our shores instead of crude oil is preferable because gasoline and other refinery products are less costly to cleanup in the event of a spill makes sense. And

yes, countries such as China and India will be consuming increasing volumes of gasoline, diesel fuel and other refined petroleum products. Further, Canadian producers will have oodles of crude oil to supply any refineries that might be built on the west coast. However, basic economic considerations suggest that oil sands producers will avoid investing in refineries on either the west or east coast.

First, there is the matter of price. Western crude oil exports are heavily discounted because of excess supplies and quality differentials in the U.S. midcontinent region where the West Texas Intermediate oil price marker that drives the price of most Canadian crude oil shipments to U.S. refineries is set. In fact there is a ‘double’ discount because WTI has been trading at substantially lower levels than other leading oil price markers such as that for Brent (North Sea) crudes.

Although plans are underway to increase the limited pipeline capacity available to ship oil from Cushing Oklahoma to the U.S. Gulf Coast, growth in indigenous supply sources, including both bitumen from the oil sands and production from oil shale will probably prevent western Canada crudes from achieving world prices. That is, producers selling crude oil to refineries on the west coast would be unlikely able to make the same profit as they could from exporting to growing markets in Asia, despite the greater transportation costs.

10 years ago (2003): All hell broke loose because of the formation of the Interior Health Authority. Mayor Mark Shmigelsky said, "We lost beds, lost staff and were given promises." The purpose of the IHA is for the province to deflect blame for poor health care, he claimed, and said the district will be documenting local health care inadequacies in hopes of joining with other interior communities to collectively voice their complaints. Councillor Gerry Taft agreed that the situation was very frustrating, and was glad the district was taking action.

15 years ago (1998): Council unanimously approved a sixfigure upgrade, $120,000, for software with which to greet the new millenium at their regular meeting. "The current accounting software is not year 2000 compatible," Mayor Chuck Blanchard claimed, while reluctant councillors agreed it was a necessary expense.

20 years ago (1993): Dog owners were frustrated with

the District of Invermere. A question quoted in a letter from the district treasurer read, "Why do I have to license my dog where there are so many unlicensed dogs running loose?" She said there were two practical options: increase next year's animal control budget, or repeal the bylaw. Licensing dogs earned about $2,500 for the District each year, but was largely offset by the $5,600 cost to collect it. One councillor wanted to see an increase in funding so the community could hire a bylaw officer, who would also enforce against bylaws such as parking, jaywalking, beach patrols, dangerous trees and water restrictions.

30 years ago (1983): After expanding their phone service with the addition of cable TV, Panorama Cable Systems overstepped an agreement they had with the Shuswap band, as the contract stated hydro poles may be utilized on reserve land but did not mentioning TV. Chief Paul Sam approached the Panorama Cable Services and requested that, since their infrastructure utilized Shuswap land, the Shuswap First Nation have access to the TV service. "We are part of the public and we want services too, especially when they trespass on our land to provide services for others," he said. The cable company re-

quested ten days to consider Chief Paul Sam's request, during which time, Panorama Cable Systems rerouted their infrastructure to avoid Shuswap territory.

40 years ago (1973): • High school graduate Theresa Ede had nine consecutive years of perfect attendance at Invermere Elementary and DTSS. • Invermere's domestic water supply was of concern, and councillors in Invermere were planning to build fencing to surround lakes of water sources. Lakes would soon post signs reading, "No camping, no picnicking. Public water supply," council said. They had hoped to acquire 200 acres in the Paddy Ryan Lakes area as part of their efforts.

50 years ago (1963): The leader of the BC Liberal party, Ray Perrault, visited local candidate Bob Keenleyside in the Athalmer and Invermere area before the general election on September 30th. Mr. Keenleyside promised that, if elected, the Liberal Party would "work hard against the city slickers and outside professional organizers who are taking an unusual interest in Columbia," and also stressed the Liberal's belief in running locally-chosen candidates through locallyorganized campaigns, and "would not use professional organizers from outside the riding."

This means investors in refineries face risks from changes in product specifications in the targeted market(s). Stringent environmental regu-

lations also make it very expensive to build and operate refineries in North America. By remaining focused on crude oil exports and establishing supply relationships with oil refineries in a number of Asian Pacific countries, Canada’s oil producers can avoid the risks surrounding oil refinery ventures here.

Finally, the largest petroleum producers — those with sufficient financial strength and flexibility to invest in oil refineries as well as new oil production facilities — have other objectives.

The large Canadian oil companies, such as Suncor Inc. and Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., plan to continue to develop their oil sands production

capacity, the highly specialized business that they know best. Foreign-owned oil companies heavily involved in the Alberta oil sands have similar plans. Moreover, some of them (including ConocoPhillips, Exxon and Shell), have plans to develop huge, costly LNG export facilities on the BC coast.

dian oil refineries to be attractive relative to other investment opportunities.

Canada Day craze PHOTOS BY DAN WALTON & STEVE HUBRECHT Invermere's Canada Day parade took place under a blazing hot sun on Monday, July 1st but the heat didn't stop a thousand or people from lining the downtown streets to watch the colourful spectacle go by. The parade was immediately followed by the Mountain Mosaic Festival of the Arts at Kinsmen Beach where a host of kid-friendly activities took place, as well as live music and lake time.

Hats off to enterprising artist Teen artist Japhy Hunt gives 'local talent' a whole new meaning DAN WALTON dan@invermerevalleyecho.com

Doing what you love for a living isn't easy, especially for a high school student in a tough job market. However, Japhy Hunt, who's heading into Grade 10 at David Thompson Secondary School in September, has found a way to pull an income through his eyecatching artistry.

You may recognize Japhy as Napoleon Dynamite, Charlie Chaplin or, his most recent impersonation, the Mad Hatter, among his many personalities seen at community events. He's currently in the process of mimicking Pirates of the Caribbean's Jack Sparrow, which is a lengthy study, he said, because the four-film series has a lot of content to cover. Though he has no trouble becoming his characters, he does have help from his mother in creating the costumes.

"For Pirates, we found a regular brown long-haired wig while visiting California," he told The Valley Echo. "And when we came home my mom did all the dreads and braiding with all the little trinkets and everything."

And aside from birthday party performances and busking, Japhy is sometimes seen in character amidst mundane activities.

in a mechanical manner, the enterprising student doesn't mind taking his work home.

Japhy's current get-up can be appreciated each Saturday at the Invermere Farmers' Market, where he acts as the Mad Hatter — a unique theme inspired by a costume.

"My mom made the Mad Hatter costume because I love the movie, and I thought, 'Why don't I have Mad Hatter tea parties at the Farmers' Market.' " Japhy said he'll be inviting guests to join him at the Mad Hatter tea table at the Farmers' Market all season, "as long as I don't outgrow the costume," he said.

While Japhy's costumes and performances often intrigue conversation, it can be easy to overlook his talents as a visual artist and musician.

As he began practicing piano at the age of five, Japhy said music was the first

"I started trumpet while taking band in high school, something I've always been interested in — I'm seriously thinking about it after school," he said.

As a musician, Japhy's work can be heard at DTSS band concerts.

Those who browse Invermere art galleries may be familiar with Japhy's paintings, as his work has been on display at Pynelogs, and he's been listed as a permanent artist at Black Star Studios since its opening in 2009.

Becoming recognized was a bit of a fluke for Japhy. As a nine-year-old in 2007 while visiting Mexico, an unknown lady approached him with an extraordinary offer — to display his work at an art gallery in Vancouver.

"Sounds fantastic," he told her.

After demonstrating his talent in Vancouver with a

sold-out exhibit, Japhy was soon displaying his work at Pynelogs.

And because his clever paintings and drawings often can't stay stocked, he found another way to share his designs — T-shirt art.

His favourite illustrations can also be found as clothing each week at the Invermere Farmers' Market.

Many of the residents of the Columbia House may recognize some of Japhy's outfits, as he volunteers in character at the seniors' care home upon request.

Canadian complexities I’ve been having a lot of good feelings lately about being Canadian and living here in the West. In fact, these feelings have been growing as I watch events in Canada, and western Canada in particular.

I’m talking, of course, about news items that have heaped lavish praise on those of us lucky enough to live in the west. Events in Calgary, and Alberta in general, have been very high on that list. We may or may not deserve that praise for our own acts, but it spills over onto us, anyway. When we look inside, however, especially at our concern for our families and communities, praise is deserved. We genuinely do care and are genuinely willing to show that care in action.

I have become rather blasé about the benefits of living here, often forgetting as I get caught up in the ‘doing’ of daily life. After all, things generally work as they should. Things sometimes fall apart, but generally we find far less corruption here - in spite of what we hear from Quebec - our possessions work, we progress toward the future. That may be limited at times by what is called our ‘remote’ location which tends to slow things down a bit. Sometimes, that turns out to be quite a bit, but we still are moving forward into our future.

Sometimes we question that future, wondering about how useful the inevitable changes it’s creating may be. We hope it doesn’t mean we and our children find some of what has been lost is essential to making it through the next few years. Then we look at the news of the rest of the world and our praise for our home again becomes enthusiastic. In comparison to many places and countries, we are lucky to be here. If change is difficult here, imagine how much more difficult it would be in failing countries.

As it is with all places, there are negatives with which we must deal. Sometimes these involve problems that become serious. I doubt the people who wait until their return is considered safe, whether they’re in Calgary, High River, or anywhere else, feel much

satisfaction. Yet these same places show the strength of both the resolve of the people, and the generosity of support given by neighbors and people from every area of Canada. That support and generosity helps with the work of cleaning up and reconstructing. It helps, too, with the psychological recovery needed by those who have lost a lot.

Canada Day, by now, has come and gone. Our lives are still busy. Many of us still lie awake at night wondering how we and our families will go forward and what we should do. Some of us are deeply concerned about changes or refusal to change within our com-

munity, our province, our nation and our world. A few people are able to see a bit farther and wonder about what our future will bring and whether we will cope. Even with questions, though, most of us are aware of our gratitude toward our country and what it means in our lives.

As the colored lights of the fireworks go off around us, we usually find ourselves caught up in the moment so we don’t think about either the positives or the negatives in our life-experience, but both come back to us shortly afterward.

The trouble we experience as soon as we can concentrate on what we need to do comes from the huge number of options open to us. Some of those options are presented to us in forms which make them very attractive - after all, one of the major developments of the present is the great increase in understanding how people make decisions about spending.

In fact, developments in science have begun to add to those complex decisions we are facing, making everything more complex. It isn’t as though we can find areas of peace and quiet within the matrix of our world. It’s all becoming so interactive and complex it seems as though there is no place in our lives anymore for those old concepts. However, when we look through the very thickest of what appears to be frustrating complexity, we find ourselves staring back at us. When this happens, we are indeed fortunate for we are enabled to get the slightest finger-hold on the possibility that there is still a place for peace and quiet. It’s just that the place is within ourselves.

Of course, the first picture we get is only the beginning step in this new awareness. We can stop there if we wish. It’s still a good step forward.

Yet, it is possible for us to use that first step as a beginning to a deeper exploration, and find within ourselves a whole new area ripe for exploration. It often begins in serious thought about how we plan for our families. That’s where we can help.

The weather finally co-operated for Ladies Day, June 25th. The June Monthly Cup winner was Pat Slack. Sharon Taillieu was second and Marlyn DesBrisay was third. The KP was won by Susie Bond. There was only one deuce for the carry-over deuce pot and that was Marlyn DesBrisay. Barb MacDonald and Pat Slack hosted a get-to-gather after golf. Thanks a lot Barb and Pat. Our Fairmont Ladies Tournament is July 8th and 9th. Everything is well under way and we hope to see you there!

Judo Jottings

The Invermere Judo Club is actively practising on the mat during the school year. Other activities are still ongoing.

Mackenzie Dubois had the opportunity to practise with the Western Canadian provincial teams. The training/practice was held in Canmore on the last weekend of May in preparation of the upcoming National Judo Championship. Mackenzie experienced many new techniques, like choke locks and other more advanced moves. Now she says she is ready for next season's training and hopefully some appropriate competition, as she has learned and gained confidence in her abilities in judo.

The Canadian Judo Championship will be held in the Olympic stadium in Richmond from July 5th to 7th. Karen Sharp, Bob Gadsby and myself with family will be spectators of this great event. Bruce Kamstra, the provincial judo coach, said the B.C. team is ready. Karen Sharp has been working very diligently on her Level 2 NCCP coaching certification, which is now in its final stage. Under the NCCP guidelines, BC Judo has implemented its rules and regulations to emphasize the long-term athlete development [LTAD]. The Invermere Judo Club has practised with these methods for the last few years. To keep up with all that is new and old, I attended the Annual Black Belt Association meeting in Richmond.

RIVERSIDE LADIES GOLF CLUB:

This time it was a little more tricky to get there, but, once there, it was most informative. Workshops on coaching, physical and psychological aspects and risk management were presented as these apply to the sport of judo.

The kata examination and evaluation were scheduled for Sunday morning.

Two brown belts from the Invermere Judo Club — Jeanette Riches and Alex Munos — have been working and training hard on the required kata. Both ju-

dokas have been recommended by our club for the higher achievement of sho dan, first degree black belt. On June 23rd, the big day of demonstrating the knowledge and techniques of Judo kata showed its result. We, of the Invermere Judo Club, are very proud of your promotion to Sho Dan — congratulations.

We now have five black belts in our club to teach physical fitness and the art of judo.Have an enjoying relaxing summer and see you on the tatame in the fall.

On June 13th, the Riverside Rosebuds held the Tournament of Roses, a flighted low net tournament and Susie Bond won the 1st flight with her personal best score, a gross 76, net 62. The 2nd flight was won by Marjorie Wright-Wawruch with a net 63 and the 3rd flight was won

by Isabelle Steward with a net 65. The ladies also played the Dorothy Franklin Tournament and that too was won by Susie Bond with a Net Handicap Differential of - 6.81 and her score will be entered in the BC Zone Competition. The tournament was followed by rose awards and dinner in Dappers Lounge — a lovely day for all.

Principal's Message “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven”…

Ecclesiastes A time… to revolve, to revolt, to return, to renew… Once more we have returned again to where we started… we have come round one full revolution: four seasons, two semesters, one year. Each year we arrive at this check point, a time to reflect and take stock of the year’s events: the laughter, the tears, the storms, and the calms. The events of the last year have left their impacts upon us; we are not the same as when we began this journey. We, too, have turned. The ways we have changed are varied and subtle, perhaps not recognized for a long time. But make no mistake, we are different people. What is different? What were the lessons? What have I learned?

We must each consider these questions alone, so that in our revolutions we become the people we wish to be.

Valedictorian's Address

by Katrina Dubois Family, teachers, friends, and fellow graduates of 2013: For those of you who know me, you may be a little surprised to see me up here delivering this speech in front of all of you today. And for those of you who do not know me, well, this is definitely not the easiest thing for me to be doing. Initially I hesitated to take on the role of Valedictorian as it is a big role and I wasn’t sure I was up for the challenge. While making my decision, the famous quote written all over Lululemon bags popped into my head. It states, “Do something once a day that scares you.” I said to my mom, “Well, if I do the Valedictorian speech, I’ll be good to go for over a month!” I decided to take on the task and came to realize how much of an honour it is to represent the DTSS graduating class of 2013. I thank you, my peers, for giving me the opportunity to be that representative. I hope you all find a memory, a moment, a laugh or something to take with you from this speech today.

Writing this speech allowed me to reflect on the years everyone here has spent together and helped me realize how important this moment is. It is a moment of joy, fear, excitement and sadness; a moment of mixed emotions which concludes our high school experience. This is a moment of change where we go onto the next stage of our lives and leave behind the childhood where we grew to be ourselves. Take this moment to remember the good times, the laughter, the friendships and even the tears. These are the times that have defined us, making us who we are today.

This could be a scary time. Everything we have come to know is changing and we are to start anew once again. Where has all the time gone? It seems like just yesterday that we walked into the big scary high school with so many new faces and new opportunities. Now, just five short years later, we stand here, on the verge of graduation. We have come so far. Just remember the days in kindergarten when we had to be helped to tie our shoes and zip up our jackets. At that time, we were just boarding the big

yellow school bus with a long journey ahead of us and an unknown destination. We are no longer the dependent children we used to be. We have made mistakes and gained knowledge from those mistakes. We are now young adults with bright futures and must leave this familiar territory of school that we call home and begin a new chapter in our lives.

Today is also a big day for our families. They have been there for support and have watched us grow into the young adults we have become. Everything is changing for them too and they are experiencing those same mixed emotions that only a moment like today can bring. They are all so proud of us and want to see us succeed on our own. However, they are apprehensive about us leaving home and moving on, while all the same very proud of our accomplishments. They are excited, as we are, to see what comes next. Take a moment to thank those that have supported you throughout the years.

Remember the years we spent together as a class at David Thompson and perhaps even earlier years spent together in elementary. These years are truly unforgettable. Memories and friendships have been created that will last a lifetime. Look around you and notice the faces that you have known since the first few years of school and of course these last five years at DTSS. These familiar faces may fade, but will not be forgotten. New faces and friends await, but our high school memories and friendships will always be there. Next year when you are off to University or college, travelling the world, starting a career, or doing whatever you choose, take these memories with you. They will guide you through the tough times and hard decisions, will help you smile when you are sad and will help you rejoice when you succeed. Cherish these high school memories: the anxiety of walking into a school full of big strong teenagers when you were only a little Grade 8; the long lectures that seemed as though they would never end; the hours spent with Ms. Brown just trying to understand one darn physics concept; the essays that would never seem to write themselves; the

time spent on sports teams, band trips, leadership, or other events; the lazy weekends and the hectic weekdays; the grad lazer game and how we easily beat the teachers even after they handcuffed our goalie to the net; remember your first party and first dance, first date, first car and first kiss.

We have created a bond amongst our class. We are unique and special in our own way and share a connection that nobody can understand except for ourselves. Take the accomplishment of finishing high school with you as you move on in life and be satisfied with your success.

Today is a new beginning. Life is an adventure.

Embrace the world and the opportunities that approach you. There are so many unanswered questions wanting an answer. We have our whole lives ahead of us, ready to embrace as we go. The future is ours to behold. A famous quote states, “Success is to be measured not so much by the position one has reached in life but by the obstacles one has overcome while trying to succeed.”

Among our class sit future lawyers, engineers, pilots, chefs, mechanics, teachers and athletes, only to name a few. We have journeyed so far and are ready to take this leap from childhood into the exciting life of adulthood. We are ready to face future challenges. The opportunities are endless. We are the control of our own destinies.

Be proud 2013 graduates. We have done it. We have finally completed high school and have completed a milestone in our lives. This moment has been waiting for us for so long, and now it is finally here! Be proud of the progress we all have made and embrace the opportunities ahead. This is it. This is not a scary time, this is an exciting time. It is our moment to leave the passenger seats of the school bus and hop off into our own individual destinations.

As said by Henry David Thoreau, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.”
