Langford prepares alternate boat launch Charla Huber News staff

Langford Lake will soon have a new boat launch away from kids playing on the beach. The new site, off of West Shore Parkway, is not up and running, but is expected to open in about a week.

“We need to add more rock and (the incline) is too steep right now,” said Mike Leskiw, Langford parks manager. Access to the future boat launch is currently on a private road. “We are working with the owner to have it turned over to the city,” said Leskiw.

The current boat launch site, near the main beach at Leigh Road is a safety issue said Mayor Stew Young. “It can be dangerous when you have kids playing and people backing up to the water with a boat,” Young said. Improvements at Glen Lake Beach Park also separated the

boat launch and family beach area. Young said the new boat launch at Langford Lake and other lake access projects in Langford stem from a city open house eight years ago. “We had 1,000 people come in four hours saying they wanted more access to the lakes,” he

said. Although the city is expanding access to area lakes, Young stressed many are being kept in their natural forms to provide habitats and ecosystems for local plants and animals. Visit www.cityoflangford.ca for updates on the opening. charla@goldstreamgazette.com
