Langford prepares alternate boat launch Charla Huber News staff

Langford Lake will soon have a new boat launch away from kids playing on the beach.

The new site, off of West Shore Parkway, is not up and running, but is expected to open in about a week.

“We need to add more rock and (the incline) is too steep right now,” said Mike Leskiw, Langford parks manager.

Access to the future boat launch is currently on a private road.

“We are working with the owner to have it turned over to the city,” said Leskiw.

The current boat launch site, near the main beach at Leigh Road is a safety issue said Mayor Stew Young.

“It can be dangerous when you have kids playing and people backing up to the water with a boat,” Young said.

Improvements at Glen Lake Beach Park also separated the

boat launch and family beach area.

Young said the new boat launch at Langford Lake and other lake access projects in Langford stem from a city open house eight years ago.

“We had 1,000 people come in four hours saying they wanted more access to the lakes,” he

said.

Although the city is expanding access to area lakes, Young stressed many are being kept in their natural forms to provide habitats and ecosystems for local plants and animals.

etiring is not something Ron MacIsaac sees in his future anytime soon.

The 87-year-old Langford resident has been a lawyer since 1948 and still works five days a week. He shares the firm MacIssac and MacIsaac with his son Dan in Colwood.

Being in the business runs three generations in the family, with MacIsaac’s late father also in the business.

Times have changed in the past 60 years of practising law. After graduating from law school, new lawyers have to take a one or two year apprenticeship called an articling year.

“When I graduated there were very few lawyers in B.C. so during my articling year, I was able to go to court,” he said.

During that year MacIssac won a landmark case for the Jehovah Witness church.

“They were being charged for obstructing the sidewalk traffic for holding their magazine Awake, “ said MacIsaac.

“That was the first time the Jehovah Witness’s has won a court case. Before that they had lost hundreds of them.”

MacIssac worked in criminal courts for about 12 years before moving over to civil court cases.

When he began civil law he was able to help more clients and finish cases more quickly.

“Now there are 1,000 road blocks between the time

While he still enjoys practising law, MacIsaac focuses on pro bono work these days.

“I’ll do any kind of case for free,” MacIsaac said, explaining he just likes helping people.

His father worked up until he passed away at 92 years old and his mother passed away at 112.

“So I think I’ll retire when I am 115,” he said.

Over the years MacIsaac has always enjoyed being a member of the community.

He’s also always valued children, and has seven of his own.

He has been known to take children’s groups hiking, skiing and sailing.

From 1955 to 2008 McIsaac has also been a columnist focussing on travel and politics for 10 publications including the Goldstream News Gazette.

“That’s the parents,” she explained, opening the box containing two fluffy falcons. With a wave of her hand she prompted them to chirp back.

“There is a third one up here in half a slumped nest,” Bengey called from 10-metres up the tree.

Bengey hoisted the new nest and secured it to the tree with bungee cords before replacing the two fallen chicks in the nest and transferring the third baby Merlin.

Marks speculated the parent falcons may have taken over an abandoned nest to begin with.

“They are opportunistic nesters,” she said.

Wild ARC staff said the nestlings were already on their second down and about two

weeks old. A fourth was found dead in a ditch.

Even though the parents could be heard, Wild ARC staff stuck around to ensure the parents came to care for the young birds.

Capital Regional District directors could pull the plug on plans for an Esquimalt sewage sludge plant today (July 3), thanks to overwhelming public opposition.

CRD directors are considering an interim report compiled from public surveys on the siting of its biosolids facility, part of the region’s $783-million secondary sewage treatment project.

Two locations were proposed for the plant – Hartland landfill in Saanich and Viewfield Road in Esquimalt. The CRD paid $17 million for the Viewfield site in March.

“This is only an interim report.

There are two recommendations that the board will review, but there is considerable opposition to Viewfield as a site,” said Andy Orr, CRD spokesman.

Nearly all respondents living in nearby neighbourhoods opposed a plant at Viewfield Road, Orr said.

Directors also have the option to delay a decision until a final report on public consultation is compiled.

Orr said the CRD would likely have to sell the property if not chosen for the sewage facility. “I don’t think the CRD has another use for the property,” he said.

Vic West resident Justine Semmens said she hopes CRD directors put an end to what has been a bitter fight thus far.

“I’m curious to see what’s going to happen. Victoria and Saanich get their weighted votes, while Esquimalt only has one,” she said. dpalmer@vicnews.com

Cougar spotted, treed in Metchosin park

Cougar season is upon us as family pets discovered last Thursday in Matheson Lake Park.

A man and his family were walking in the Metchosin park when the family’s dogs spotted a cougar around 7:45 p.m.

They gave chase and the cat climbed a tree.

The man told West Shore RCMP that the cougar was about 30 metres from the beach near the main parking lot.

Any sightings of cougars can be reported to B.C. Conservation at 1-877-952-7277.

Lew Duddridge: living the good life Louis Bockner News staff

“I found myself doing something I had long ago promised to do. I left the house quietly, and alone, and unashamedly knelt down to kiss the ground,” writes Lew Duddridge in The Flying Duddridges of Hanley. The book, his fourth, is no masterpiece.

The prose doesn’t rival Hemingway or Joyce.

Yet it tells the truly remarkable story of Len and Lew, brothers from a dusty town in southern Saskatchewan who joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War defending their country the only way they knew.

On a warm July evening in 1940 Lew’s mother became the first Canadian woman to pin RCAF wings on both her sons at the same time in Dauphin, Manitoba. Following this momentous day of “pomp and ceremony” the brothers were whisked away to defend the skies over Europe and North Africa.

Now, 73 years later, 95-yearold Lew sits in the comfort of his Langford living room, while is wife Hilda answers the never ending phone calls.

His hands are large. His broad, striking face carries the creases and scars of a life well lived and although his short-term memory falters from time-to-time, the long-term is wielded with a precision that defies his age.

His eyes close as he remembers seeing Hilda for the first time. There she is, standing on a German railway platform with four other girls, awaiting a train.

It is a Tuesday.

An offer to carry her bags led to a date later in the week but this wasn’t good enough for Lew. “I was a flight commander and I thought ‘you know, I don’t want to wait until Friday to meet this

Lew doesn’t know what to credit with his old age and vitality but his ability to stay away from alcohol has helped.

“I have a pretty strong mind in a lot of ways and whenever I start losing my faculties or begin feeling uncomfortable, I quit,” he says. “You can lose male friends with that attitude but I don’t think I lost too much in life by being called a chicken. Anyhow I didn’t give a damn. It’s my life and not somebody else’s.”

“Oh he was pretty sharp looking in his wings and officers uniform and he was Canadian and a real talker,” she says. “He could talk the hind leg off a donkey.”

Six months later they were married and 68 years later they carry out the dance of life with a compatibility and grace that is a joy to watch.

They plan to publish a children’s book together called Friends in Picture and Verse, in which Lew provides the poetry and Hilda the artwork.

In a culture where divorce rates soar Lew offers a few secrets learned during their marathon marriage.

New era possible for deadly road The placing of concrete dividers on the Malahat, in areas prone to crashes, is a good step in the right direction, from a safety perspective and one of highway continuity, even as driver common sense remains paramount.

While it is critical that emergency crews be able to quickly reach drivers involved in collisions on the road, it is also imperative that at least one lane of the road remains open to keep traffic moving.

At this time of the year, more families will be hitting the road for summer holidays, and many of those will be travelling up or down the Malahat to reach their destinations.

There have been many calls over the years to do something to address the potential for problems and tragedy on this hilly, windy section of Highway 1 between Goldstream Park and Mill Bay. Some of those suggestions, or demands, had a snowball’s chance in Haiti of being followed through on, like the bridge and tunnel ideas.

But the one that always seemed to make the most sense – a better system of dividers – has finally been acted upon by the Ministry of Transportation.

This is the same department that spent hundreds of millions of dollars on the Inland Island Highway from Parksville to Courtenay some years back, then extended it to Campbell River, so people could rumble along at 120 kilometres per hour or more between areas that produce far less traffic than the Malahat on a daily basis.

But those were the days when government had more money to throw around and such megaprojects could be justified with the number of full-time jobs that were created.

Things are different today, and finding solutions that cost less and are more efficient uses of funds are the norm.

That said, there is and will always be the matter of driver behaviour on a road that has sustained many tragic crashes – some due to conditions, but virtually all traceable back to some level of driver error.

Driving for the conditions is the mantra for this tricky, but very scenic and beautiful stretch of highway – that and always maintaining complete control of your vehicle.

That in itself may slightly increases the size of government.

But it could be a preliminary step to selling the whole thing off and reducing the government’s role to taxing and regulating booze sales.

You can imagine how that would go over with the NDP, with former liquor store union boss George Heyman among the loudest opposition MLAs. This is the kind of change that should be debated in public, not by press release.

Lawyer’s tree-mendous work recalled Ron MacIsaac, pathfinding lawyer, civil rights defender, tree protector and Victoria TV host, will soon get the wider recognition he deserves.

Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo will award him the degree of honorary doctor of laws tomorrow (July 4).

When our surviving patches of old-growth forest were under even sharper attack than they are now, Ron echoed the voices of the men and women who blocked the logging bulldozers with their bodies.

He put together Clayoquot Mass Trials, a book that softened the chop-it-all-down impulse.

Ron successfully defended Jehovah’s Witnesses against a religiously-loaded law about obstructing the sidewalk.

But I remember Ron’s forest protection better than his other successes.

I have clear memories of the lost ancient trees. I’m old enough to recall when the road to Lake Cowichan was lined with firs and cedars matching those that used to stand in Cathedral Grove on the Alberni road.

Mortimore Think about it When all the trees for miles around the Cowichan Lake highway had been felled, and some of the logging money fed into people’s pockets in those meagre Depression times, I stowed my dad’s bottles of homebrew beer to cool for him in the ponds of a tiny creek. It soon dried up, but at that time it briefly continued to flow among the stump-roots.

My dad was a Cowichan fly-fisherman and a sometime cleanup worker in the wreckage of the forest.

In the mind’s nose I can smell forest-fires and slashburnoff smoke that hung around for months. It was Vancouver Island’s trademark odour. I join together

I was a reporter on Hugh Savage’s Cowichan News Leader newspaper when Mrs. Baird passed through Duncan in a crowd of train passengers. I asked her views on what we now would call sustainable logging, sawmilling and woodworking.

Her book did not deal with those subjects, but many people’s thoughts were trending in that direction, and Mrs. Baird’s celebrity status made her a reasonable target.

I can’t remember anything she said. Right now, forest thoughts are mixing with patriotic thoughts.

At a time when Canadians and Americans are assembling on our national boasting-days (July 1 and 4) to wave flags and declare each of our countries the world’s best, it feels right to give a nod to people who have done something to improve the world.

Few among us flag-wavers, cheer-leaders, quarrellers and grouches can make that claim. Ron can. Hence the

degree.

Millions of poor Asians, Africans and Latin Americans have little to cheer about.

The job of protecting trees is interwoven with the equally tough job of protecting people.

In Bangladesh, 1200 garment workers earning $38 a month to make cheap, elegant clothes for Canadians and Americans died when a flimsy eight-storey building collapsed on them.

In Bhopal, India in 1984, as many as 20,000 people in a shantytown slum died and thousands more were disabled for life from poisonous gas that exploded out of an India-U.S.A. insect-killer factory that had been poorly maintained to save money.

Miserly compensation has been paid to some of the victims. Legal remedies are a pretence.

There is more work to do, for trees and people. Young heirs to Ron MacIsaac have started that work, as scholars at Vancouver Island University will remind us.

This man came out to help a lady that had collapsed in the parking lot just outside of Victoria General Hospital on March 13.

My husband saw her fall as we were leaving, and drove back to see if we could help. He went over to see her, and I ran inside the hospital to ask for help. After I explained the situation to the lady at the admitting counter, she told me to call 911.

I was appalled, considering I was in the hospital where there are plenty of stretchers, doctors and nurses as well as ambulances.

To the man that heard me frantically asking for

help and came to this lady’s side out of no benefit to himself thank you, and thank you again.

It’s nice to know that there are good people still left in this world full of red tape, rules and regulations.

Capturing stories captures award Capturing Stories scored a film award for 10 Dunsmuir middle school students.

The six boys and four girls aged 13 to 15, earned the Youth Award for Best Documentary Film at the Cowichan International Aboriginal Film & Arts Festival.

The production was the culmination of the READ (reading, evaluation and development) Society’s Capturing Stories 14-week program.

Under the guidance of Dano Underwood, READ’s Capturing Stories media co-ordinator, participants explored their own lives, histories, cultures and values and came together as a crew to develop

a video reflecting the individual and group interests.

“As part of this program we learned that our families and our communities have high hopes for us,” said participant Rudy Charlie. “We found that when things get rough you have to work as one – as a family. We have to walk one way – to look one way and to not look back.”

By bringing people together from across communities and generations the program opened new ways of learning and new venues for people to talk about what was important to them.

“It’s partnerships like the one we have with the READ Society that really help to strengthen the relationships between our First Nations and school district communities,” said Kathleen King-Hunt, Sooke School District principal for aboriginal education. “The outcomes of these partnerships have an amazing impact on the culture and identity of both our aboriginal and non-aboriginal students, and these positive impacts spread throughout the communities.”

The eye is somewhat protected against UV rays by the eyelid, the eyebrow, the orbit, the nose and the cheek. However, if you are outdoors a lot, in very strong sunlight, or near water, snow and ice, you need extra protection. Wear a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen or proper clothing to protect your skin. If you don’t, you may be getting too much UV radiation. If this happens only rarely, it could just mean sore eyes and a painful sunburn lasting a day or two. If you make a habit of not protecting yourself, all year round, you risk developing eye and skin problems when you’re older.

Experts estimate more than half of our UV exposure occurs by the age of 18. Children’s eyes are also at risk because the lenses of their eyes block fewer ultraviolet rays. That’s why young children should play in the shade between 11 am and 3 pm, and always wear hats with wide brims to cover their heads and shade their eyes. Of course, other types of sun protection are important too. Don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen and proper clothing. Even if the day is hazy or cloudy, you can still get a sunburn from UV radiation.

Teenagers and adults may wish to discuss appropriate types of sunglasses (prescription or non-prescription) with their optometrist. Parents can inquire about sunglasses for young children.

Anika Todd’s first road bike was a Christmas gift from her exboyfriend two years ago.

The 23-year-old Victoria resident has come a long way since then, winning silver in the elite pro women’s time trial at the national cycling championships in St. George’s, Que., on June 20.

Todd, of Pro City Cycles, is one of two local bike shop employees to surprise at the nationals, as Russ Hay’s bike mechanic Curtis Dearden, 29, won the men’s time trial the same day.

Silver medal winning national time trial (TT) cyclist Anika Todd works at Pro City Cycles in Vic West, and races for the shop’s Pro City race team. “it was easy math that she start racing.” he said.

Historically, Todd has always been a strong athlete. During high school in Germany (dad was stationed there with the Canadian Forces) Todd was on the varsity track, cross country and wrestling teams and credits her wrestling coach for her building her discipline and mental toughness.

Todd leads the pack during the Caleb Pike hill climb in the Victoria Cycling League on Wednesday night. The VCL helped Todd jump from casual rider to silver at the national championships within a year.

“I think thats what has made me excel at cycling. Some of it is obviously fitness and natural ability but ultimately it comes down to who will suffer more and who will push their body further. Who will be aggressive and not give up,” she said.

All that aside, Todd only started racing six months ago.

During the same stretch of time she also finished her honours degree at UVic in biology, where she researched retinal development on a cellular and molecular

level. Academically, she’s thinking medical school or post-graduate studies. On the bike, it’s a different approach.

“I don’t think (my cycling progress) too much. Lawless sends me a four-week training schedule for a race and I follow it. I just ride the bike, he makes the decisions,” she added, smiling.

So far it’s led to multiple successes for Todd, including a win in her first time trial event, Race the Ridge in Maple Ridge on April 27.

As a newbie in Category 3 and 4, and on a road bike, Todd won the Race the Ridge TT by 10 minutes. She since accumulated enough points for the elite Cat. 1-2 in B.C. and about two months ago received word the national cycling championships would be a reality.

The rolling 27-kilometre TT route outside of St. George’s played to her strengths as she finished 20 seconds back of champion Joelle Numainville, a previous winner from Laval, Que. “Because you’re on you’re own in the time trial you don’t really know if you’re doing well overall but you kind of know you’re riding well,” Todd said.

One tipoff was catching and passing three riders ahead of her, as each TT start is staggered a minute apart. The next was keeping Olympic track cycling bronze medalist Gillian Carleton in her sights.

“I finished and then waited anxiously. One after another crossed the line and my time still stood.”

Next up for Todd is B.C. Superweek, a collaboration of nine different races around the Lower Mainland July 5 to 14, including the Gastown Grand Prix.
