Man charged with abduction 12-year-old boy approached at Clearbrook Library Abbotsford police have arrested a man who allegedly attempted to abduct a child. According to police, a 12-year-old boy was at Clearbrook Library between 9:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, when he was approached by a man. Police say the man attempted to convince the boy to leave the library with him. The boy refused and informed his parents. Abbotsford Police were contacted the following day and identified the man as 71-year-old Patrick Marini of Abbotsford. Charges of attempt kid-

napping and abduction of person under 14 were laid against Marini, resulting in his surrender to police on Thursday afternoon at 4:15 p.m. Marini was previously convicted of sexual assault in relaMARINI tion to a 2012 incident. He is under a conditional sentence order and a probation order as a result of that conviction. Both orders stipulate that

Marini is not to have contact with any person aged 16 or under. APD detectives want to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident on Tuesday. In addition, police want to speak with anyone aged 16 or under who Marini may have contacted. Patrick Marini is 5’4” tall and weighs 130 pounds. He has grey hair and brown eyes. Truck leaves acid spill on Sumas Prairie A security perimeter was set up around an area of No. 3 Road and Boundary on Sumas Prairie after an acid spill on Friday afternoon. Emergency crews were called out shortly before 3 p.m. after a truck lost a load of hydrochloric acid. More than 20 five-gallon containers ended up on residential property on Boundary Road. Assistant fire chief Dave Rivett said some of the pails appear to be leaking. A traffic cordon was placed around the area while HazMat teams deal with the spill. “At this point there is no danger to the public because we have everybody well away, there’s no danger to the environment because we don’t have any major spills so it’s simply a matter of us stabilizing it and making it safe,” said Rivett while at the scene. The truck which lost its load left the scene. “Wherever the truck was, it’s taken off, we have no idea where it is at this time,” said Rivett.

Jam in Jubilee seeks to connect community Organizers aim to provide activity for youth and all ages, attract people to downtown core

Jam in Jubilee provides free entertainment for people of all ages, but for the event’s organizers, the festival is also about creating engagement between Abbotsford residents and the city’s downtown core.

For six weeks this summer, Abbotsford’s Jubilee Park will be host to live music, performers, an artisan market and more. Jam in Jubilee – a sixweek summer music festival –runs each Thursday between July 11 and Aug. 15. Each evening starts off with an artisan

market at 6 p.m. followed by local musicians and performers from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Jam in Jubilee began nine years ago, originally run by the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA). Four years ago, Sophia Suderman took over organiz-

ing the event, which is still made possible with a grant from the ADBA. Suderman is the co-founder of the Atangard Community Project, a not-forprofit communityliving project in the Fraser Valley Inn on Essendene Avenue. As a resident of

Abbotsford’s downtown core, Suderman wanted to further build community outside the walls of the Atangard. “I was living downtown and really enjoying that, and I wanted to see more vibrancy downtown.” Stephen O’Shea, Coby Piazza and Derrick Swallow all joined the executive three years ago, and serve as lead organizers for the festival. Each grew up in Abbotsford, and now strive to create an outlet for youth and people of all ages – providing entertainment, community and a place to celebrate the arts in Abbotsford. O’Shea, artistic director of the festival, said he books mainly local bands, many of whom are active in Abbotsford’s live music community. He said he makes an ef-

fort to find musicians that are palatable to the largest number of community members, creating an eclectic mix that becomes more youth-oriented as the night gets later. “We’re people who grew up here, who care about the arts and about music, who just want to see the town that they grew up in be more enjoyable for youth.” Though 20-somethings are the largest demographic drawn in by the festival, Piazza said they incorporate the interests of all people invested in Abbotsford’s downtown, including businesses and community groups. “It’s nice to see all the groups of different people that have a stake in downtown that want to help out in their own ways.” Last year, the average attendance per

evening was 720 people; the busiest night on record drew in 1,000 attendees. The organizers agree that drawing such a large crowd to Jubilee Park is an accomplishment in itself and hope to see attendance rise. Despite its downtown location, Jubilee Park often remains empty, with a lingering reputation of being unsafe. This year, Jam in Jubilee is seeking volunteers for each Thursday of the festival to help with greeting, collecting donations and serving in the beer gardens. Bear, cub spotted in park

A mother bear and her cub were spotted in Palfy Park on Tuesday. A local woman was walking her child home from Thomas Swift Elementary School when the bears were seen at the park on Laburnum Avenue. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the bears “were not aggressive in any way but it startled her nonetheless.”

The conservation office was alerted by Abbotsford police and will “work on a relocation plan if necessary.” “For now it is observation only. We just want folks to be bear aware,” said MacDonald, adding that people should not try to interact with the “cute cub” as the mother bear is close by and will be protective. Armed robbery suspect arrested

A 29-year-old Abbotsford man has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at the Mission CIBC Monday morning. A lone male robbed the First Avenue Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce shortly after 11 a.m. Monday, making off with an undisclosed amount of cash. According to Mission RCMP Staff Sgt. Rob Dickson, the man produced a handgun, and was wearing a dark grey hoodie with no logo, and black sweat pants. He entered and exited the bank from the

rear alley entrance, said Dickson. No injuries were reported. Abbotsford Police Department arrested Jeffery Russell around midnight June 25 on an unrelated outstanding warrant. Mission RCMP’s Sgt. Shaun Wright said a “significant portion of the stolen cash was recovered at the time of Russell’s arrest” but the handgun was not located. Crown counsel has approved charges of robbery and using an imitation firearm during the commission of an offence relating to this incident, said Wright.

Abbotsford police are recommending assault charges against a 26-year-old man who allegedly attacked a bus driver on Tuesday afternoon. At approximately 4 p.m. a 50-year-old transit bus driver was stopped at the 32900 block of South Fraser Way, near Bourquin Crescent, when his accused attacker entered the bus. A b b o t s f o r d Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the driver recognized the man as someone who had caused a problem earlier and had been “verbally abusive.” The driver refused to move the bus until the man left. “(The attacker) appeared to be exiting the bus but instead started punching the bus driver in the face,” said MacDonald. The driver was wearing his seatbelt, making it difficult to defend himself.

Several witnesses called the police, but the man had left the scene by the time they arrived. MacDonald said

Olympians impress at AA championships

The Abbotsford Olympians swim club combined for a spectacular series of performances at the Swim BC AA championships in Victoria last week. Twelve Olympians swimmers qualified for the meet, most of them for the first time, including Hannah Weinkauf (age 14), James Lee (15), Sam Lee (16), Ilya Taranenko (15), Peyton Smith (14), Sophia McDonald (17), McKenna Postles (11), Tavleen Grewal (11), Ryan Han (11), Maddie Charest (10) and Tobyn Smith (9). Weinkauf and Postles led the way, each earning a trio of gold medals in freestyle distances in their respective age classes. Weinkauf won the 50-metre, 100m and 200m distances,

while Postles was tops in the 200m, 400m and 800m events and added a bronze in the 100m. Steven Marshall of Abbotsford has been selected to the final Canadian men’s volleyball roster for the 2013 Summer Universiade. Following the first selection camp in early May in Gatineau, Que., Marshall was named to the initial 18-player roster. Last week he made the final 12man squad which will travel to Kazan, Russia. Marshall, a left side out of Mennonite E d u c a t i o n a l Institute, helped the Trinity Western Spartans win the 2012 CIS championship. He was a second team Canada West all-star in 2012-13. Canada has won a pair of men’s volleyball medals at the Universiade – silver in 1983, and another silver in 2007. The Canadian squad will face the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Chile and the Czech Republic in Group D at the 2013 Games.

Lafarge track meet will feature international field The Valley Royals track and field club hosts its 10th annual Lafarge High Performance meet on Wednesday evening at the Swan Track in Rotary Stadium. The event, as it always does, has drawn a diverse international field with athletes attending from the United States, Trinidad and Jamaica as well as Canada. Although the field was yet to be finalized as of press deadline, entries confirmed included Calgary’s Adrienne Power in the women’s 100-metre dash, and April Panteau of Trindad and Leslie Cole of the U.S. who will run the women’s 400m. American Lawrence Trice, with a best time for the distance of 10.33 in the 100m, will be one of the favorites in that event. Other runners who will be in attendance include American athletes Kyle Clemons in the men’s 400m (45.10) and Paris Daniels in the women’s 100m (11.26). A complete meet schedule is as follows. ELLIOTT, George Ezra George passed away suddenly on June 18, 2013 at the age of 45. He was born February 10, 1968 in Vancouver, BC. He is predeceased by his father Robert Elliott and leaves behind his mother Mary Elliott (nee Petrie); sister Jennifer, nephews Zachary, Matthew, Jacob and niece Arianna. He will be remembered for his love of music and kind heart. George has touched many lives and will be sadly missed. A Memorial Service will be held at Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel (Osborn’s), 11969-216th St, Maple Ridge, on July 2, 2013 at 2:00 pm. Flo died in Mission BC in her 97th year. She was born in Port Alberni, BC where she married Tom in 1939. With their 3 boys they moved to Tahsis, BC in 1951 and eventually settled in Mission in 1954. She worked for many years at Glenn’s Pharmacy. Flo was very involved in the community as a member of the Women’s Hospital and All Saints Auxiliaries and played with the Royal Canadian Legion Pipe Band. As a pianist from the age of 3 she entertained countless individuals and organizations well into her 90’s. With an energetic zest for life she lived it fully with a flair that was hard to miss. She was loved and will be remembered by friends and family too numerous to mention. She was a joyful volunteer, a compassionate and patient care-giver, a wise family elder, and loving and loyal friend. At her request, there will be no service.

It is with a sad heart that we advise that Vivian McVey is no longer with us. She passed away in her bed at Tabor Home surrounded by her family. Predeceased by her parents, as well as her brother Pat Herlihy and husband Stuart (Red), Vivian is survived by her son Paul, daughter Karen (Mark) and grandsons Aaron (Chalan) and Josh. In December 2007, Vivian moved to Abbotsford, to be closer to friends and family, where she lived until her passing. We would like to thank the management, nurses, care aides and staff of the Tabor Home for their help and support that they provided. She will be missed by family and all who knew her and called her friend. A memorial service will be held July 6th at 2pm, in the Assembly Room at 31850 Union Ave, Abbotsford BC. Reception to follow. Michele (Mike) Born July 3, 1942 passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on June 22, 2013 in Abbotsford, BC. He is survived by his loving spouse of 46 years, Antonietta (Annette), his children Tom, Maria (Lou), Rosa, his grandchildren Nicholas, Tianna, Jacob, and extended family in Italy and Vancouver. Before immigrating to Canada in 1964, Mike was in the military in Torino, Italy. Once in Canada, he worked hard to establish a better life and when he met a beautiful young woman named Antonietta at a dance one evening in 1967, he knew he had just met his future wife. They married and would have just celebrated 46 years of marriage on June 24, 2013. Mike was a kind, caring, loving and hardworking man. He took great pride tending to his garden. He loved his food and vino, enjoyed cooking and sharing meals with his family and friends. Mike’s generous and friendly personality made you feel welcomed wherever you were. He will be missed by family and everyone who knew him. Although we are sad that he has passed away, we take comfort in knowing that he is at peace and in heaven with those loved ones that have previously departed from us. CLAYTON, Austin Frederick Austin (Fred) Clayton passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord on June 25th, 2013. Fred was born on April 2, 1919 in St. John, New Brunswick, the second son to Florence and Arthur Clayton, recent arrivals from the UK. The family moved to Vancouver when their home was destroyed by fire when Dad was 6 years old. Dad grew up helping his parents at the family store in North Burnaby and spent many summers at the family cabin on Bowen Island. After returning from service in the Royal Air Force during World War Two, Dad learned that his approachable friendly nature was well suited for a sales career, which he pursued at various firms over his working life, providing well for the family he and Mom raised in the Fraser Valley. While still a young man Dad accepted God’s gift of salvation in Christ and for the rest of his life he modeled humility, compassion and love to his family and those who he worked with. Dad and Mom were among the first members of Abbotsford (now Sevenoaks Alliance Alliance) Church in Abbotsford, and both set a strong example of Christian service. Dad served in many capacities over the years, but his role as an usher was his passion, greeting everyone and making them feel welcome. Dad and Mom enjoyed a long retirement, which included travel and much time visiting with friends and family. Dad is survived by his six children; Daryl (Mary), Bob (Maxine), David (Michelle), Dianne (Bert), Brian (Laura), John (Michelle) and many dearly loved grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dad was predeceased by his dear wife of 60 years Carol, his parents and brother Harold. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Worthington Pavilion for the compassionate loving care Dad received during his time there.
