He writes: “The new Walmart SuperCentre will be approximately 96,000 sq. ft. and will include a full range of groceries. Walmart, which

will open later this year, is expected to create up to 200 full- and parttime jobs.”

The store will be about one-third larger than a Canadian football field or about 2.2 acres.

Savard explains that, “at this time, we are constructing Phase 1 of the project, which includes the Walmart store and the offsites (e.g. Trans

He said SmartCentres will announce the grand opening date as soon as it is confirmed.

Plan to reduce packaging waste

What to do with all that packaging?

A new provincial program will help – and will provide financial incentives.

While the number of recyclable items has grown, both in curbside and depot programs, packaging has remained the bane of those who would reduce the amount of waste going into landfills.

Enter the province with a program that will see industry taking responsibility for collecting and recycling packaging and printed paper.

Following recent Ministry of Environment amendments to B.C.’s Recycling Regulation, packaging producers formed a non-profit organization called Multi-Materials British Columbia (MMBC).

The organization has developed “market clearing prices,” that are financial incentives available to local governments that operate curbside collection of packaging and printed paper (PPP) and local governments, private companies and non-profit organizations for multi-family building and depot collection.

co-ordinator Ben Van Nostrand explained the program to the regional district directors at the June 20 board meeting.

“Where there’s a curbside program in place, they’re offering a financial incentive to recycle packaging materials,” said Van Nostrand, noting customers should see an increased level of service because there will be opportunities to add more materials to the pick-up program. “If they take the financial incentive, it potentially offsets the cost of the program.”

Van Nostrand told directors that the incentives are available to CSRD’s depot programs and to any municipality or First Nation was operating a curbside program collecting either recyclables or garbage in 2012.

Salmon Arm will be eligible for incentives, but Sicamous, which chose not to provide curbside collection, will not be eligible. Those who are interested in participating in the program must advise MMBC by Sept. 16.

“They’ll negotiate the contract and the plan will roll out in May 2014,” says Van Nostrand.

Van Nostrand says CSRD collection depots are tied to current contracts until Dec. 31, 2014.

“Because we have a contract in place, we’re not able at this point to be able to take advantage of

the financial incentives,” he says.

“We will continue to run the program as is until Jan. 1 2015, at which point we’ll transfer to the MMBC program and take advantage of the financial incentives.”

Municipalities with curbside collection could see savings in the neighbourhood of about $34 per household, says Van Nostrand. But the incentives will go to the member municipalities who will then decide when and how to pass the incentives on to their taxpayers.

Currently within CSRD, approximately $1.25 million is spent on the delivery of recycling services associated with PPP. “Local governments will have the ability to redirect funding toward other zero waste programs such as organic waste management and composting,” said Van Nostrand.

City of Salmon Arm Mayor Nancy Cooper says she would like to see the funds directed to organic waste management programs but it will be up to council to make that determination.

“I like being able to keep more stuff out of the landfill,” she said, noting the city has been putting money into reserve to offset some of the costs.

“It’s nice to see more recycling added without a huge tax increase.”

Last year, close to 6,000 children of all ages attended the Salmon Arm Children’s Festival at the fairgrounds.

Festival organizers are determined that the festival remain a free event so that all children and families in the area may enjoy a fun celebration on Canada Day. Included in the 2013 festivities is a great lineup of entertainment: • A talented percussionist, David Thiaw is also a singer, storyteller, composer, linguist, teacher, drum craftsman and the leader of Domba, an Afro Jazz Group.

• Jonny Be Good, a young magician from Vancouver will be featured on the main stage and will also be doing walkabouts as he mesmerizes one and all with his sleight of hand.

• Mike Shaver and

Stephanie Webster and of a Million Dollars in Pennies tell their stories in clever songs.

• Kiki the Eco Elf is a children’s entertainer who engages is in story-telling, interactive songs, and entertaining clowning and facepainting.

• Expert teamster Joyce Marchant will again be offering free wagon rides.

Other free activities include several inflatable bouncy houses, a dance exhibition by local dance studios, a 4H small-animal display, plus lots of arts and activity tents. The ever popular 50-cent carnival games and a prize tent are back.

Every child gets one free game ticket on entry, and wearing red earns them a bonus ticket.

Food vendors will offer a variety of choices for all ages and attend-

Future of the BC NDP at a crossroads

The provincial NDP is at a crossroads, and whichever direction it chooses is fraught with challenges.

Not only did the party lose an election that almost everyone expected it would win, it lost a number of key ridings, particularly in the Interior and Lower Mainland suburbs. It also lost in Oak Bay-Gordon Head, where Green Party candidate Andrew Weaver was elected. Weaver is a wellknown scientist who is articulate and knowledgeable. He will almost certainly help build on the Green Party beachhead which began when national leader Elizabeth May won a Vancouver Island seat in the 2011 federal election.

The NDP has much to fear from the Greens, who appeal to many younger and environmentally minded people. The NDP, by contrast, often has difficulty moving beyond its massive debt to organized labour, which has very conflicting views on the environmental movement. The past election showed that many union members, particularly those whose jobs are related to resource extraction, voted Liberal.

Or the NDP could move in the direction of being much more robust in supporting economic development. While this would appeal to a core of voters, the party would be saying goodbye to many of its environmentally minded voters.

The B.C. NDP must decide if Adrian Dix will remain as leader. Dix did not give much indication that he is going to resign, at the weekend provincial council meeting. If he stays on as leader, there is almost certain to be a vicious internal fight within the NDP, which will likely lead to a very divided party. That would leave it in even worse shape to deal with the changes that are in the wind on the provincial political scene.

Premier Christy Clark and the BC Liberals are watching the NDP angst with undisguised enthusiasm.

Few remedies for muddy trout There is something to be said for a shore lunch, you know, frying up a couple of fresh-caught fish in a cast iron frying pan on a small campfire right beside a lake or stream.

“Best table in the restaurant,” may father used to say. I sure used to enjoy those shore lunches. Maybe it was the surroundings or having worked up an appetite being out in the fresh air, but somehow things seemed to taste better.

Or maybe I just remember things tasting better, because if the truth be told, I’m not really all that big on eating trout. I much prefer halibut or walleye. Although I have been known to cook up an occasional trout for dinner, especially when I’m up at the cabin. Unless of course the trout happen to have that awful, totally distasteful muddy flavour trout sometimes have in certain lakes at certain times of the year.

Contrary to what some people believe, the muddy taste in trout has nothing to do with mud on the bottom of the lake. It is caused

The GreaT OuTDOOrs James Murray by a chemical compound called geosmin. The two primary producers of geosmin in freshwater lakes are the blue-green algae you see on the surface of some lakes and actinomyus bacteria which causes decomposition of organic material on the lake bottom.

Algae and actinomyus bacteria release geosmin into the water (it is actually released when the living algae and bacteria die) which trout breathe in through their gills and then transfer, through the bloodstream, into their skin, flesh and muscle tissue.

Geosmin accumulates in the skin, fatty tissue and muscles of a fish and

are only eliminated with time once the algae bloom clears and/or decomposition slows. The rate of elimination is dependant on water temperature and the fat content of the fish, which is species and age (size) specific.

Ironically both algae and decomposition increases in warmer water, while it takes longer for a fish to eliminate the geosmin compounds from their system in cooler water due to metabolism rates.

Although fish can still taste muddy in the fall, they are more of a problem during the hot summer months when the algae is in full bloom. The problem diminishes as water temperatures cool down and are less likely to occur in lakes which are relatively deep and low in organic matter.

The problem can also exist in lakes with a high degree of clay particles suspended in water. The clay absorbs the geosmin that is subsequently passed through the gills of the fish.

It can be hard to predict which lakes will have mud-

dy tasting fish. Two lakes of similar depth, with the same type of algae bloom, may not produce similar tasting fish. Sometimes it’s just a matter of what micro-habitat a fish frequents when eating.

If you do keep a fish that you suspect is going to taste muddy, you can usually distinguish a slight muddy smell to it when you’re cleaning the fish. You can try soaking your fish in vinegar to help remove the muddy taste, but I’ve never really found vinegar all that successful. (Geosmin breaks down in acid). Once I know the muddy taste is there I can always taste it – regardless of how it is prepared, how much spice might be used or what kind of sauce it is covered with.

There is, however, a much simpler way to get rid of the muddy taste in trout. Simply return the fish to the water and figure out something else to make for dinner.

And, if by chance you have a hankering for something sweet and chocolatey for dessert, you can always have mud pie.

Project aims to get kids outdoors

Early childhood educators are hoping to bring children back to the roots of play in nature through a $10,000 project in a city park without a name.

Trudi Hobson and Friday Bailey of the Shuswap Children’s Association, and early childcare professional Dawn Lee are the founders of TRUE (together, relaxed, unplugged and exploring) in the TREES, an idea that is in the process of becoming reality with the help of the City of Salmon Arm and a $10,000 grant from the Early Childhood Educators Association and the Vancity Community Fund.

In a presentation to council, Hobson said the latter two organizations were offering the funds to early care and learning professionals across the province for a community project.

Hobson, Bailey and Lee came wanted to put together a project that would 1) encourage more open-ended play activities outdoors; 2) more family connection and less disconnect; 3) more families spending time outdoors; 4) increased knowledge and understanding of families regarding the value of play outdoors. And so TRUE in the Trees was born.

“Our education and experience as early childhood educators shows us children re-

ally thrive in nature, and they learn through opportunities to explore at their own pace,” said Bailey. “Children entering kindergarten in this community have been identified as struggling with gross motor skills and with social and emotional development, so our project will support children in practising skills that are needed.

“We are concerned parents are putting more focus on children’s academic success, and maybe forgetting that

The focus of the project is the forested area and pond on property, which includes part of the Rotary Trail, at 28th Street NE and Fifth Avenue NE, next to the Okanagan College Campus. One of the group’s plans for this nameless parkland is to install some drums and different types of resonant equipment.

“We believe that drumming brings people back to a place of self-regulation and security and they’re more successful in moving

forward in whatever it is that they’re interested in doing,” said Bailey.

Lee said the project will include cleaning up the property and placing interpretive signs and other educational material, with input from First Nations.

City parks supervisor Brad Ackerman, who has been working on the project with Bailey, Hobbs and Lee, said input may be sought from local First Nations as well, for naming the park.

Alan Harrison said the forested area by the school is where some of the best and most imaginative play occurs.

“I guess that would be the one caution that I would give to you doing a project like this, is to provide the resource and make sure it’s a safe place, but not to overorganize the activity,” said Harrison. “I know at my school, kids’ favourite time of day is recess and lunch when the adults are leaving them alone and they are able to go out and play without us telling them where to go and what to do. And it looks like that’s the lean of your project.”

Hobbs later said they’ve applied to Canada Post for another grant of up to $50,000 to go towards the project.

Council voted to direct staff to continue working on the project as needed to help see it through to fruition.

South ShuSwap Reading program takes off It’s Up, Up and Away for the 2013 Summer Reading Club for kids at the Okanagan Regional Library.

Whether your child is interested in things with wings, superheroes, the secrets of the stars or weird weather, there will be a program that suits them during this exciting summer program.

Fun contests, activities and guest speakers encourage kids to read the summer away and help prevent learning losses that occur when they don’t take part in educational activities.

Registration for the program has begun and will continue throughout the summer.

Magicians and painters are among those who will be visiting the South Shuswap library this summer as part of this year’s summer reading program.

While traditionally the summer reading program is only open to kids from kindergarten to 12 years old, parents can now have their babies and toddlers take part as well.

The Read To Me program allows younger children to take part in the events while having parents, brothers or sisters read them.

Each child who registers will get a booklet to keep track of the books they read and a bookmark. Once they have read a book, they get a sticker.

There will be a number of competitions and contests throughout the summer, including a sunflower-growing contest that will require participants to water their plants each day.

Each week the sunflower would be measured.

The library will also be celebrating its reading program with a list of performers scheduled to visit throughout the summer.

Kicking off the entertainment is awardwinning Norden the Magician, who will be performing some mystifying tricks for the children on July 2 at 2 p.m.

Lynn Erin will explore “Up, Up and Away,” in a watercolour session.

Also on the horizon is an origami session with Eiko Uehara at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 17 and Leigh Schaffer will introduce children to the world of science with Owlie Growlies by examining owl pellets to see what they eat at 11:30 a.m. July 24.

A comic drawing session with Kevin Adamson takes place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 31.

The Summer Reading Club, which is offered at all branches across the system, saw an increase of 16 per cent last year.

Get to know cataracts risk factors

There are no medications or other treatment options besides surgery to correct cataracts. In the United States, cataract surgery has a 95 percent success rate, and patients often have 20/20 or 20/40 vision post-surgery. Cataract surgery is also the most frequently performed surgery, often performed as an outpatient procedure.

As men and women age, they can experience certain physical changes and health challenges. Vision impairment is one condition that many associate with aging, and cataracts are a primary concern for those of middle-age and older.

Today, more than 22 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts. According to the National Eye Institute, by age 80, more than half of all Americans will either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery.

Cataract is clouding of the eye’s lens that blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye. Normally the lens is clear, which allows light to pass through to the back of the eye, so that a person can see well-defined images.

If a cataract forms and the lens becomes covered in an opaque film, light cannot pass through easily.

The result will be fuzzy vision, almost like looking through a fogged-up window. If cataracts are not treated, an individual may eventually lose most of his or her vision.

One or both eyes can be affected by cataracts. In the case of both eyes being compromised, one eye is usually worse than the

other.

The primary risk factor for developing cataracts is age. The older a person is, the greater their risk.

However, there are several other risk factors as well. * Intense heat or longterm exposure to UV rays from the sun * Certain diseases, such as diabetes * Obesity

* High blood pressure

* Inflammation in the eye

* Hereditary influences

* Long-term steroid use * Eye injuries

* Other eye diseases * Smoking

ract basics to tips on what to expect from cataract surgery. Visit

And, as part of its new Healthy Eyes Educational Series, PBA offers a specific online module on cataracts, including a Power Point presentation and guide. The organization shares this information about cataracts: * Early symptoms of a cataract may include cloudy or blurry vision. * Lights may cause a glare, seem too dim or seem too bright.

* Sufferers may also find it difficult to read or drive, especially at night. * Individuals may have to change their eyeglass prescriptions often.

In Canada, where, according to Statistics Canada, seniors will make up 21 percent of the population by 2026, cataract surgery is also frequent and well tolerated. Approximately 250,000 cataract surgeries take place in Canada each year, according to The National Coalition for Vision Health.

It is widely recommended to get regular eye exams to check for cataracts early on.

“By getting a complete, dilated eye exam, your doctor can discuss with you the best strategy to protect your vision well into the future,” said Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness America. “We encourage everyone, especially those ages 40 and older, to make their vision a priority by scheduling an eye appointment today.”

Making their services accessible to everyone is important to Wyslouzil and Costa, which is why they have set schedules to work for stay-at-home moms, retirees and those who work outside the home.

Classes run throughout the day and into the evening, with some classes making their way to the local beach.

A number of packages are available, including month-by-month packs or flex-passes.

Originally from Sorrento, Wyslouzil and Costa are trained in hatha yoga. A third instructor, Jutta Dewitt,

has extensive training in Iyengar yoga.

Workshops will be offered throughout the year.

“We are excited to be in Sorrento and to be able to offer yoga to a community that had no other option before,” Wyslouzil said. “We hope to help the yoga community grow.”

Wyslouzil said the women hope to host retreats throughout the year as well.

A new Wednesday class runs from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. at Sorrento Centre. This class will be conducted outside during the sum-

mer, with the option of heading inside in case of rain.

After realizing that there were no studios in the area, Jessica Wyslouzil and Reanna Costa teamed to bring yoga to the Shuswap.

The two hope that by opening a studio in Sorrento they can create a more convenient place for yoga-lovers to gather, eliminating the need to drive to other communities.

Wyslouzil says the classes have received great feedback since the studio opened June 8 and some classes have already begun to fill up.

The women offer classes for children, chair yoga for seniors and everything in between.

Plans are also in the works to add more classes to the Breathe roster.

The partners have tried to make their studio a place where families can come together, and have designed a class that allows parents and children to

How to survive mosquito season (NC) - With the hot, humid, and dry summer months ahead, we can finally look forward to being outdoors and enjoying all the fun activities summer has to offer. However, summer is also a time where mosquitoes and deer ticks like to roam and make our lives miserable and uncomfortable.

Here are some tips and recommendations to make sure you make it through mosquito season: • Wear light-coloured, loose clothes and avoid scented products when outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn, which is the peak feeding time for certain mosquitoes.

• Remove areas of standing water near your house as they can be breeding areas for mosquitoes.

• Clean Gutters: Gutters clogged with debris allow stagnant water to form perfect landing zones for mosquito eggs.

• Wear closed shoes and a hat to avoid deer ticks. Tuck pants into socks.

• Inspect your clothing and body after exploring wooded or grassy areas.

The best way to reduce bites is to use an insect repellent when spending time outdoors in mosquito-infested areas.

Unfortunately not everyone takes these precautions. According to a survey conducted

by Harvard University for the Harvard School of Public Health Project on the Public and Biological Security, 45 percent of adults in the United States did not take precautions

to prevent mosquito bites.

Some theorize that it’s because some older repellents with DEET are greasy and have an unpleasant odour, so people don’t like to use them. Many people don’t realize there are new odourless and non-greasy products on the market today that make taking precautions against bug bites much easier.

Yet another change in plans for the 2013 Sturgis North Motorcycle Jamboree and Music Festival.

There won’t be one.

Sturgis North announced Thursday on its Facebook site that the event will be postponed until August 2014 “due to time constraints re the new location and we apologize for any inconvenience!”

The 2013 event was going to be held in Merritt, after an earlier location planned for this year was nixed. In December 2012, Sturgis North and the Neskonlith Indian Band announced they had formed a partnership and would be holding the 2013 event Aug. 22 to 25 at Silvery Beach on Little Shuswap Lake near Squilax.

Sturgis North In April, that plan was announced cancelled but no public Thursday that explanation was offered. the event will be Emails from Sturgis postponed until North were sent to the August 2014 Chase RCMP as well as “due to time the Columbia Shuswap constraints re Regional District informthe new ing them of the Squilax location...” cancellation.

In May, Merritt was announced as the new site.

Although Sturgis North 2011 received some good reviews in Salmon Arm, about 15 businesses were left angry because they weren’t paid an estimated $300,000 for their services.

In November 2012, the motoplex initiated a claim for close to $400,000 in BC Supreme Civil court against Sturgis North Encore Productions Inc., but the Market News was told then by a motoplex spokesperson that negotiations were still underway.

However, Bob Newcombe, manager of the Spallumcheen facility, said Monday he is not able to comment on the situation, because “we are ending up having to sue them.”

Ways to be sodium savvy WeLL Our body needs salt to survive, send nerve impulses and contract and relax our muscles.

As a bonus salt adds flavour and helps preserve foods. However, in our North American food system we get way too much of a good thing.

The average Canadian consumes about 3,400 milligrams of sodium daily. This is more than double the recommended intake of 1,500 mg, and it is 50 per cent higher than the upper tolerable limit of 2,400 mg (which equals one teaspoon).

This high-salt intake does not come without consequences.

According to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation three in 10 Canadians have high blood pressure caused by too

much dietary salt.

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and has been identified by the World Health Organization as the leading risk factor for premature death in the world.

So where does all this salt come from?

Roughly 80 percent of sodium in the diet comes from processed foods and restaurants.

It is important to read nutrition labels because salt can be hidden in less obvious places such as breakfast cereals and vegetable juices that boast numerous health claims.

Some popular breakfast cereals have up to 350 mg of sodium per serving (and most people eat more than one serving) and vegetable juices can have close

smoked, barbecued, teriyaki, soy sauce, broth, miso, gravy, bacon and, of course, salted.

Look for products that contain less than 200 mg of sodium per serving. Be aware of serving sizes and think about how many servings you usually eat.

What may seem like only a small amount of sodium can add up fast as you double or triple the servings. Thoroughly rinse canned foods. And of course, the best way to avoid a high salt diet is to shop the perimeter of the grocery store, choose whole foods and cook from scratch as much as possible.

to 500 mg of sodium per cup. Other sources that often surprise the unsuspecting consumer include canned vegetables, cheeses, smoked salmon, lunch meats, baked beans, store bought bran muffins, canned soups and tomato sauces.

More obvious sources of sodium are found in the fast food items. A burger and fries meal could easily tally up 1,500 mg of sodium. Yet even the health conscious fast food eater can be hard pressed to find low salt options. Some fast food restaurant salads pack in 1,200 mg or more and a six inch sub might contain 1,200 to 1,800 mg of sodium, remember that’s almost double in a footlong.

SportS Manther victory The Manthers Rugby Team took on the Merritt Mountain Men in the Okanagan Semifinals on Sunday, June 23 in front of a large crowd basking in the sun at Jackson field.

Eight minutes into the game, Merritt opened the scoring, leaving the Manthers struggling for composure.

A quick chat by captain Tyrone Stretch McCabe refocussed the team for the kickoff.

Only five minutes later Manthers Greg ‘Old Man’ Seed broke through the Merritt back line. With some show-and-go moves he still had to dodge two tacklers and put the ball down under the posts. Manthers struggled with fitness to get to half time. The second half proved to be just as tough, as the Merritt Men were break-

ing through a few tackles to be stopped by fullback Brad Shields who made three trysaving tackles throughout the day. A chip kick down the wing by standoff Jeff Miller sent William Shaw chasing the ball to soccer kick it close to the end-zone for Justin Blanshard to dive on the ball.

Merritt made a long kick into the 22-zone for one of their men to collect the ball on the run and score in the corner.

The Manthers spun the ball across the field and Dan Freight Train Gawley plowed through a few Merritt players to get stopped just a bit short. James Cookson did a quick-and-go to the blind side and scored. Final score 19 - 10. On July 6 in Penticton the Saratoga Okanagan Cup is up for grabs.

Chase Eco-depot set to open July 30

The long awaited Pritchard eco-depot will be opening sooner rather than later.

Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) representatives Peter Hughes and Jamie Vieira announced to Chase council Tuesday that the expected opening date for the depot is July 30.

“It has been a long time coming,” Hughes said.

With the opening of the new waste management site comes a few changes as well.

Cash will no longer be accepted at the site; however, credit and debit will. Charge accounts can also be arranged for some businesses. Those who do not want to use the cash or credit options can opt for the eco-cards which will continue to be sold at the village office, Pritchard store and Safety Mart.

Another big change is how fees will be applied.

estimating the weight of each load, scales will now be used.

This method, Hughes said, will be much fairer.

He noted that before, people were paying $4 for four bags of garbage. “We are finding now that people are looking at $2.50 to $3,” he said. “On the other hand, those who were paying $10 for a pickup truck load are going to be paying a little more.”

Vieira said staff were receiving a number of legitimate complaints from their current setup; however, he assured this method will be a fair alternative.

“Everyone who goes over the scale is weighed the same way,” he said, noting that the scales used are the same type used by Transport Canada.

“It has the majority of our customers saving money,” Vieira said.

The new eco-depot will also have additional staff running the show. One will be stationed at the weighin station while the other will be out on the grounds.

Some other notable changes include the materials the depot will be taking as of July 30, or in the near future.

This includes the acceptance of electronic waste and paint for recycling.

While they will not be accepted on opening day, the eco-depot will be taking household hazardous waste.

This will not begin until sometime down the road, as more information on the proper infrastructure required to handle such wastes is needed.

While the waste management site is capable of sorting yard brush already, in the future it will also accept lumber for chipping and recycling.

There will also be a noticeable increase in the storage space capacity for all the items they already accept.

“In terms of operation and safety there is an overall increase in efficiency,” Vieira said.

While at the current dump site, users must throw their garbage over or through a railing to get it in the

bins, this site has a new method. There will be a tipping floor found in the new depot, which will allow users to simply dump their garbage on the floor.

A share shed was also noted as one of the upcoming additions.

The site itself features three buildings, the scale building, the recycling building and the garbage building.

Vehicle rolls down bank one lane of the highway to be shut down for a short-period of time.

RCMP received reports that one of the drivers had their head turned right, failing to check the left-hand lane when they pulled out into the westbound lane of the highway.

The vehicle was then T-boned by an oncoming F-150 truck in the eastbound lane.

No injuries were reported.

RCMP R e P O RT On June 23, Chase RCMP were called out to a single vehicle accident at 3:30 a.m. on Highway 97 just past the south brake check.

When police arrived the vehicle was down a 30-foot embankment; however, no people or animals were found at the scene.

RCMP were informed by a witness that the vehicle was allegedly spotted just minutes before driving erratically, speeding and conducting unsafe passes.

The area where the car lost control has a 40-kilometre suggested

speed, said Sgt. Gary Heebner of the Chase RCMP. The RCMP members had begun to investigate when the owner of the vehicle called in.

The driver claimed that they had swerved to miss a deer or a cow and lost control.

No injuries were reported and Heebner said that a violation ticket is being mailed to the driver.

On June 22, a twovehicle collision was reported on the turnoff to Squilax from the highway, resulting in

The owner of the RV is from Kamloops and was planning to check to see if anything was stolen that evening.

RCMP received another report of a possible break and enter in the Anglemont area earlier this month.

The report came in after a property manager sent a professional appraiser to the residents who then found the dowel off-track in the sliding door and the house in disarray.

It is unclear at this time whether any items were stolen.

Coun. Steve Scott asked if they are going to be using the yard waste such as leaves to create a composting

program where they would eventually resell.

While one of the TNRD’s goals is to set up several composting stations around the area in the future, at this time the program is not ready and the compost collected will go to the reclaiming the closed landfills.

The TNRD representatives also said there may still be an an-

nual community waste pick-up but they cannot promise this.

The program, while advertised and endorsed by them, is actually conducted by a stewardship program.

While Vieira said he could see no reason why they would stop hosting this event, he could not say for sure.

Young Guns make a three-peat The Young Guns remain the reigning slopitch champions.

After three days of intense play with a total of 10 teams competing, the Young Guns narrowly squeaked through another championship at the Chase slopitch tournament last weekend .

After losing their first game to the Rum Runners on Friday, the Young Guns pulled together to win all of their Saturday games.

Sunday followed with some fierce competition as their first game saw them pitted against the Rum Runners for a second time.

While the scores remained close for most of the game, this time the Young Guns were able to clinch the win at

the last minute, moving them to the next round.

The Young Guns were sent directly into the next game without much time to catch their breath, taking on the Rookies.

Things were looking bad until the sixth inning when the Guns took the lead and nabbed another win.

A large number of Chase locals gathered under the shade of a nearby tree to take in the action at the Chase slopitch finals.

The Young Guns and the Ash Kickers battled until the end, keeping onlookers on edge and tensions high on the sidelines.

BROPHY, EDWARD CHARLES “ED” February 3, 1938 - April 14, 2013 Ed passed away April 13, 2013 in Kelowna General Hospital shortly after his 75th birthday.

Ed is survived by his golfing family at Club Shuswap and relatives at Vanderhoof, throughout western Canada and in South Dakota.

A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at Club Shuswap in Canoe Thursday, July 4 at 11 am with Norm Russell and Gloria Makey officiating.

Ed’s smile will broaden with your memories of our fun times in recalling his pranks and sharp sense of humour. He is “Sadly Missed and Fondly Remembered!

Special thanks to all who cared for Ed at Shuswap Lake General Hospital and also the ICU/CCU units in Kelowna over the 10 days of intensive care and to Fischer’s Funeral Services for the service “above and beyond.”

BOPPRE, JAY OCTOBER 31, 1953 –JUNE 14, 2013 Jay Boppre, aka J-Bird, a Shuswap Lake local legend, flew the coop early on Friday June 14, 2013. Jay will be remembered always for his wild laughter, crispy deep tan, his 70’s style summer shorts and his immaculately clean pick up truck.

He was predeceased by his beloved Mother and Father, Leonard (Tyke) and Lucille Boppre and his 2nd Mom Joy Neilly.

Born in Calgary but raised in the Shuswap lake area, Jay spent his working years managing the Provincial Parks, “Swimming the Shuswap” as a commercial scuba diver, running the Crowfoot Mtn Snowmobile Club, volunteering as chief of the local fire department, and as a laborer at Captain’s Village Marina.

He will be forever missed by his Shuswap Lake friends. He will be deeply missed by Kyle (son), his 3 “Little Ladies”, Danielle (Dan), Jaelynn (grand daughter), Taylor (daughter), and, Rya (grandson), Mark (brother), his true love Michelle, and Debbie (Taylor’s Mom).

Thank you to, Dora MacQuarrie, Mark and Angie Lagore, the staff at Overlander, Ponderosa, and Polsen extended care facilities and the Kamloops hospice staff for their kind support and hard work taking care of Jay. A Celebration of Jay’s life will be held on July 6th 2013 at 2pm at the North Shuswap Community Hall.All friends and family are welcome to a reception at the hall after the service.

ROXANNE MARIE BOYD (nee Emery) March 27, 1944 - June 20, 2013 Roxanne was born on March 27, 1944 at Lethbridge, Alberta and passed away on June 20, 2013 at Parkview Place, Enderby, at the age of 69 years.

She was predeceased by her father and step mother Bill and Jean Emery, her mother and step father Esther and Peter Kouwenhoven and stepsisters Sheila Northey and Judy Kouwenhoven.

Roxanne is survived by her loving husband of almost 51 years Bob, brother Bill (Gail) Emery, children Rob (Carol), Rick (Tammy) and Tracy (Ken) Therden, seven grandchildren Christin, Reggie, Katie, Tiffani, Calsie, Cody and Dawson as well as three great grandchildren Reece, Brodee and Gus. She loved to cook, spending many years catering around the Okanagan as well as her gardens, especially her flowers.

The family would like to thank Parkview Place in Enderby for caring for Roxanne for the past two years. A special thanks to Glen and Sheryl, your love for Roxanne and support of the family was very much appreciated.

SANDERS, JERRI MAE NOVEMBER 17, 1951 - JUNE 14, 2013 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister and aunt, Jerri Mae (Potts) Sanders on June 14, 2013. Jerri fought a short and courageous battle with cancer and passed away with her two sons and daughterin-law by her side.

She was born and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan before moving to Alberta to meet her husband and start a family. When she wasn’t raising her two boys, she was working as a nurse at the Fort Saskatchewan Hospital. For the final chapter of her life, she moved to Salmon Arm, BC with her husband where they spent their final years together in the Shuswap.

Jerri was predeceased by her loving husband and soulmate Rick and her parents Frederick and Shirley Potts. She leaves behind her sons Patrick (Jessica) and James, her sister Jan Elliot, her brother Randie Potts, loving nieces, nephews, and many close friends.

Her laughter and smile will live long in the hearts of those who knew her. The family will be having a private celebration of her life in Vancouver where she will join her husband. We would like to thank the staff at Bastion Place for the wonderful care they provided to our mother.
