Youbou’s A.B. Greenwell Elementary School saw its last end-of-the-year ceremony on the afternoon of June 19.

Parents were treated to coffee and goodies in a festive atmosphere as students sang songs and received awards for unique and individual talents.

Though the ceremony was tinged with sadness at seeing the school close, school staff and Principal Jann Drake chose to approach the day in a positive light.

“It’s more about moving on,” said Drake.

“I didn’t want to go the closure thing.”

Drake said she is one of the lucky ones who happens to be moving on as well. She will be principal at Palsson Elementary School starting in September, and is happy she will be working with many of the same students and their parents.

“So that’s a comfort to me, and I think it’s a comfort to them,” said Drake.

She adds the parents who were most concerned were those who have children going into Grade 4 this fall who were not sure where their children would be placed following school restructure..

However, Drake feels that through discussions these parents have had with Lake Cowichan School, as well as with herself, parents and their children are feeling settled.

“I think they were ready,” she said. “They kind of knew because there’s been talk for quite a while.”

But the emotional element of the closure certainly rang true for some in attendance.

One was Bill Greenwell, son of Archie Greenwell after whom the school is named.

Roadwork underway at the intersection of North Shore and South Shore roads will ultimately result in a new roundabout and a freshly paved stretch of road through the Lake Cowichan core.

Drivers will just have to patient while it happens.

Spooksville hopes to have found a home in the Cowichan Valley.

The cast, crew and producers of the new television series, which is scheduled to air this fall, feel they have found the perfect place to bring the show to life.

With sets in Duncan, Chemainus, and here in Lake Cowichan, they are utilizing both the unique buildings and the picturesque landscapes that are so synonymous with the area.

In choosing the Cowichan Valley, Jane Startz, executive producer for the show, said they had always wanted to create a look for the show that was different.

“And we wanted it to have a sort of spooky, seaside, smalltown atmospheric feel,” she said.

“We came over here . . . to scout the area and we just fell in love with it. It’s got everything, just the natural beauty is stunning; very dramatic landscapes, nice small-town feel and tremendous amount of local talent.”

In Lake Cowichan, the production has been utilizing the old Stanley Gordon School as one of its sets. In it, they have created a cave that is actually an organism from another realm.

“In the story they realize it’s an organism when they go into it and everyone thinks it’s an evil cave but it’s being made sick by the people who trespass into it and it sort of spits them out,” said Tink (his professional name), the production designer.

“But it was kind of expensive to make so I had to make it reconfigurable.”

He adds that there are about 14 different walls all made of shaped Styrofoam that can be moved to make different tunnels.

It has everything from a dirt floor to ponds and moveable stalagmites.

“It looks convincingly real,” said Tink.

learns, with the help of his friends, to value his own talents.

In this episode the characters will be faced with a presence in the lake in the form of glowing orbs and ripples that vibrate on the water.

Lead actor, Keean Johnson, who plays Adam, said he too has been enjoying his time here at the Lake.

“I love it. My mom loves hiking so when I’m working she goes on hikes and always talks about how beautiful it is,” said Johnson. “And I’m into photography so I go out and take a bunch of photos.”

He also said he has enjoyed the restaurants and other amenities in town.

“Everyone’s so nice here.”

The producers hope to make the Cowichan Valley a permanent home for the show, but they will not know whether it will be picked up for a second and third season until later this year.

“We’ve done our job about as best we can,” said Allen Lewis, Front Street’s vice president of productions. “The rest is up to the world of TV decision making.”

From page 1 When the school was built, Greenwell said there was some debate as to what it would be called.

“When they asked him (Archie) if he would allow them to have his name on it, he wasn’t going to accept, and (our family) talked him into doing it because of his grandkids and great-grandkids that would be coming along,” said Greenwell.

The elder Greenwell was chairman of the old Lake Cowichan School Board for 26 years. Understandably, Greenwell is sad to see the school close.

“It’s sad from the point of view that you lose a legacy, and he was definitely a legacy to this whole area,” said Greenwell.

Lisa Hamilton, PAC chair for the school, is also sad.

“I think our kids have a little jewel out here,” said Hamilton. “We’ve got so much room and space and they’re such a little family that I’m sad to see that end.”

She said that parents are not so much disgruntled about having to commute their kids to Lake Cowichan—approximately 70 per cent of the students at A.B. Greenwell are bused—as they are with having to pay for school bus transportation.

“I’m fine with busing my children. I just don’t want to pay $400 a year to do it,” said Hamilton.

Clark’s rookie cabinet handed tough tasks There are nine new faces in Premier Christy Clark’s cabinet, seven of them elected to the B.C. legislature for the first time on May 14.

They have been handed some of the hottest problems, and Clark’s marching orders in “mandate letters” for each ministry. And this is the start of a four-year term, when unpopular reforms are attempted.

Take Amrik Virk, the former RCMP inspector from Surrey who’s suddenly in charge of advanced education. His mandate includes: “Review the student loan program to make recommendations for improvement to ensure the loan program is meeting the needs of today’s students.”

By Tom Fletcher also set targets to “match the skills we need with the skills we are graduating” and require post-secondary schools to “ensure student seats are being filled.”

B.C. can’t afford to keep cranking out university grads with $50,000 in debt and no job prospects in a system that’s subsidized 65 per cent.

Virk will be working closely with Education Minister Peter Fassbender, who must “ensure seamless transitions” from high school to the workforce for post-secondary trades and apprenticeships.

In his spare time, Fassbender is to overhaul the school district bargaining agency and achieve a 10year peace with the teachers’ union.

Justice Minister Suzanne Anton has worked as a Crown prosecutor, so she’ll have some insight into the system that still grapples with Stanley Cup rioters from two summers ago.

Her orders are to get traffic tickets and other administrative penalties out of the courts, keep working on integrating police

fiefdoms and generally treat the constipation that afflicts law enforcement today.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone’s first test was a grilling by the Vancouver media. Yup, this Kamloops hayseed has been to the Big Smoke a few times, ridden that fancy SkyTrain and taken the odd ferry, too.

Now he has to impose the ferry route reductions that have been worked on by two previous ministers, and push Metro Vancouver through a referendum on ways to fund its own transit. If more tolls or taxes are going to be implemented, now is the time.

Coralee Oakes has made a political leap from Quesnel city hall to the Ministry of Community, Bureau Sport and Cultural Development.

One of her key tasks is to invent a framework for a “rural dividend” from liquefied natural gas development in northwestern B.C. New Minister of International Trade Richmond’s Teresa Wat has to find a way to continue the growth of lumber and other exports to China, India and elsewhere on the Pacific Rim. On top of that, the alwaysdelicate softwood lumber agreement with the U.S. expires in three years. The last major eruption on that front was in 2009, when B.C. cut stumpage rates for remote coastal areas to give communities much-needed employment. The Americans were livid, just as they were with our beetle-kill harvesting efforts.

Third-term MLA John Rustad gets aboriginal relations, with specific instructions to deal with gas and perhaps oil pipelines through his Nechako Lakes constituency.

Dear Editor If the first day of the road construction through Lake Cowichan is an indication of the well-thought-out planning to get the job done, it will be some horrendous times for Lake Cowichan residents. It took half an hour to get through town today.

The flag persons were right on the button. They let 30 cars through from one way and four through from the other, even though the lineup was reversed. No thought at all was put into the traffic control. Putting up with this for two and a half months will be sure fun.

Why did our council (and the planning department) not schedule this work between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. like many communities that think first of their residents rather than the project?

Mudslinging tolerance could only happen in Youbou Dear Editor

The silt and mud coming off the logging trucks entering Youbou is so thick on the side of the main road before you get to the firehall. And they won’t want me to mention the mess where the trucks stop and check their loads. No one seems to be monitoring the conditions that are causing colossal clouds of dust as high as our houses. Like it’s been said before, if this was anywhere but Youbou, it wouldn’t be happening.

School District 79’s Road Ahead is paved with good intentions In my opinion: Parents and school staff working to make the best of new school configuration I have heard from many community members in the weeks since the May 15 board meeting where several motions were passed significantly restructuring the school district.

To those who have connected, I am grateful. Whether you were expressing concerns about the decisions, sharing hope for a better future or asking specific questions about details of the “Road Ahead” plan, the common theme that emerged was passion for and commitment to public education in the Cowichan Valley.

You recognize that the future health and prosperity of the Cowichan Valley is directly connected to the quality of educational services available for young people. I am confident the decisions made in mid-May will provide a foundation from which to build the kind of learning environment your children deserve and need.

Staff have been working diligently

to meet the challenging timelines of registering students in new catchment areas, converting school spaces to accommodate different populations, arranging for the packing and moving of school inventories and developing a transportation plan that is both effective and affordable.

I also know that there are some school staffs and communities planning events to respectfully honour and celebrate the history of those schools that are closing while others are welcoming newcomers to schools that are expanding.

In September, there will be new relationships forming and new cultures building. The work to support that has already begun.

Throughout the summer, district staff will meet with school administrators and with representatives from the partner groups to monitor and respond to emerging issues.

The Road Ahead plan is complex and

comprehensive. There will be issues that arise between now and Sept. 3 that need to be dealt with on a priority basis to ensure that when the school doors open, students and staff will be in a positive and engaging learning space.

In a progress meeting held during the first week of June, it was apparent we are on track to meet the expectations that have been set.

To those staff who are directly involved in the reconfiguration work, thank you for your efforts. To parents who place your trust in the school district to do what is best for students, thank you for your patience and your trust.

The decisions made on May 15 were based on a fundamental belief that using available funds to resource programs and services to support your children is the right choice, and the only choice.

To all employees in School District 79, you have an opportunity to shape a new narrative about our school district that will help to attract students and families back to our schools. Thank you for what you do to support our success as a positive place to learn and to work.

Finally, it is important that you know that the superintendent, secretarytreasurer and I will continue advocate for every opportunity possible for our district to By: Mike McKay, benefit from Official trustee, government School District 79 initiatives including early literacy, Aboriginal student success and trades and transitions.

Those efforts begin with the appointment of the new Minister of Education and will continue as one of our high priorities.

ATV Club cleans up

Public dumping: Cowichan Valley ATV Club cleans up 23,000 pounds of garbage around Paldi Tyson Jones

The Cowichan Valley ATV Club spent its weekend cleaning up just over 23,000 pounds of illegal publicly-dumped garbage in the area around Paldi.

The ATV Club uses the area around Paldi to stage many of its rides. Throughout their time in the area, riders have noticed just how much garbage has accumulated, and decided they would try to make a difference.

“We decided as the club, because we are using that area all the time, we decided we would like to clean it up. It’s sort of in repayment for them allowing us to stage at that area,” says Randy Huene, director of the Cowichan Valley ATV Club. “Nobody bothers us and we try to make sure the area stays clean, but that does not account for all the other people out there dumping at midnight.”

Even though the group managed to bring out 23,000 pounds of garbage, the area — though it looks better — is far from being clean.

“This is not going to be the end of it because there is one site in there that we are not going to be able to handle at this point,” says Huene. “There’s just way more than the tonnage that they allow for the free tipping permit.”

Free tipping permits from the CVRD allow you to dump $1,000 worth of debris, says Huene.

The group was required to take before and after pictures of the cleaned area as part of the deal with the CVRD. The ATV Club brought the garbage to the Bings Creek Recycling Depot.

The ATV Club would like to bring the issue of public dumping to everyone’s attention.

can all make a difference if we could each do a little to discourage the problem,” says Huene. “Maybe one free day per month at the dumping facilities may help, I don’t know. For now, our club has done its part to

pick up some of the trash that people leave behind.”

Pioneer families make their mark on Cowichan Lake residents who made their mark on the Cowichan Lake area are cited in this fine book. The following are but a few: The Gravelles — Back in the late 1800s a man by the surname of Gravelle left his native France on an adventure that took him around Cape Horn by sailing ship to Fort Victoria on the western shores of Canada. Several years hence, a son, who he named Frank, was born in 1844 in Sidney, B.C. By 1889 Frank was working at Cowichan Lake for B. C.’s lumbering magnate Angus Fraser.

Married with four sons and a daughter, the Frank Gravelle family lived on southern Vancouver Island.

Rolli Gunderson Of his three sons, it was Joseph, who in 1898, made PAGES OF his way to Cowichan Lake.

Like his father, he “worked in the woods” (logging industry) and was involved in many log-drives down the Cowichan River. By 1917 his family was living at Lake Cowichan but left for a few years before returning in 1924, this time for good.

Joe took “an active interest” in the Rolli Gunderson Photo Collection community and spent several years on the school board. It was he, along with Dave Art Hancock, one of the area’s most renown Madill (for whom Madill Road is named fishing guides in his day, stands behind friend and neighbour Verna Palliser (nee Elves) and her for) and Colonel Boyd “who pushed for sister Lola Fleming (sitting right) at Pallies Place a high school in 1937,” wrote Saywell just a few lots down river from the Hancock (although the modest Saywell was himself home Photo taken early 1940’s. involved in the push for the school). The Hancocks — Back in 1904 until 1907 John Hancock, of Saanich, built himself a cabin on the bank of the Cowichan River near the community of Lake Cowichan. Hancock loved to fish and explore the area as did his children who enjoyed being there during summer months and holidays. One of the sons, Art, “moved up permanently” and raised his own children at the riverfront home. A well-known fisherman and river guide, Art also built fine river boats. A Sacramento, California newspaper, HISTORY the Star-News, featured popular Cowichan River fishing guide Art Hancock in its August 26th issue (Great Outdoors column) under the heading “Big Steelhead Run Expected.” The writer boasted of the numerous steelhead he caught in 1956 while fishing on “the fabulous Cowichan River with guide Art Hancock.” Hancock’s 28-foot river boat was capable of almost anything.

The writer cited Hancock as Vancouver Island’s most famous fisherman/guide whose “top river steelhead,” was a 21 pounder. Apparently 10 and 15 pounders were fairly common at that time. In 1977 —and after many years on the river he loved — Art died here. He was 75. Local resident Mike Hancock is the son of Art and the grandson of John Hancock.

Don’t flush chemicals down storm drains.

That’s what the Grade 8 students at Lake Cowichan Secondary School were learning and promoting as they walked with their teachers and Bob Crandall around Lake Cowichan on June 11.

Each year, Crandall brings this message to a new set of faces; students that are either in Grades 2/3 or Grade 8. This year, Crandall guesses that the three groups of Grade 8 students marked approximately 100 storm drains around Lake Cowichan.

“We pick mostly the high traffic areas,” said Crandall. “It’s for awareness, motor pollution, prevention and awareness.”

In January, Crandall went into the classroom with these students and made the stencils in preparation for the storm drain marking.

“We watched videos on storm drain marking and safety and how to do the safety with the traffic cones, etc.,” said Crandall. “And we also talked a lot about the different kinds of storm water pollution: non-point source, point source, and then the different things that can be done about it in and around the home.

Things that we can do to avoid storm water pollution.”

Nelson Wagner, Austin Koffski, Ajia West, and Mariah Burns are busy marking a storm drain on the corner of Coronation St. and Cowichan Ave. This is a yearly activity facilitated in part by the Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society in coordination schools in Lake Cowichan.

Hartshorn, a Grade 8 science teacher, was out and about with her group marking the storm drains in the Cowichan Ave area.

For her students this was the first year they had participated in the activity.

Austin Koffski said that the pre-storm drain marking presentation that Crandall did on the morning of the activity was nothing compared to his presentation in January.

“He brought in a diagram and showed us with little chemicals what would happen when it rains,” said Koffski.

Dakota Best, another student, is an angler who often fishes in the Cowichan

River.

“A lot of my boys are anglers,” said Hartshorn. “So it’s something they can connect to in the classroom.”

Best said he does see the impact that careless dumping can have on the fish, river, and wildlife.

“There’s beer cans, and I found like half a guitar sitting on the shore and stuff, and people pop their inner tubes and they just dump them.”

These students also say that the education they have received because of this project has helped them to, in turn, educate their parents.

Feed your hanging baskets to keep them looking great A few summer gardening tips: Vegetables: Tomatoes should be out, caged or staked and fertilized. Corn can be planted now but make certain you put them in an area where they won’t take sun away from other plants as they grow.

Keep planting carrots and radishes for a continual harvest.

Fruit trees: Check for pests and remove any curled-up leaves that may harbour insects. Do not put them in the compost or allow them to drop to the ground by the tree. If there is lots of fruit on the tree take off some of the smaller fruits to ensure a bigger, ripened fruit yield.

Fruit bushes: Our raspberries and blueberries are loaded again this year and some strawberries are ripe. Sadie’s rabbit manure is working wonders. I have a few figs on the tree that is planted facing south in full sun and we hope a few ripen at the end of summer.

Flowers: Deadhead annuals and fertilize to keep them blooming until frost.

Deadhead and prune rhododendrons and azaleas as the flowers die to insure full blooms for next year. Feed your hanging baskets weekly during the summer to keep them looking great.

Hellebores: Pick some of the dying flowers off, dry them out on paper towel and save the seeds for next year.

Hellebores are pretty expensive and if you can grow a few of you own that is a bonus.

Roses: Check for black spot and mildew on the leaves. Remove any and discard in the garbage; do not compost. Use a spray of baking soda and water to keep pests away and the leaves healthy.

Mulch: The best mulch is well-rotted compost mixed with wood shavings, leaf mould or wood chips. You can also use grass clippings as long as there are no weed seeds or chemicals in it. Newspaper between rows with the clippings on top is a good mulch as it stops weed growth and retains moisture. Old strips of carpet work too.

Watering: Hand watering is best, but if you will be away during the summer you may want to invest in a timer and sprinklers to have them come on in the early morning between 6 and 8 a.m. for 15 to 30 minutes every other day. If your plants are well-established and mulched they shouldn’t need watering every day unless it is extremely hot. You don’t want to over-water your garden or grass.

Troy’s Tip: use a piece of raw potato to remove the stain on your hands from beets and red cabbage.

May 31 was not just another ordinary day of studies for the students of Lake Cowichan Secondary School.

Rather it was day of athleticism, sportsmanship, and most importantly fun.

The school hosted its annual track and field day.

The all-day event, held at the adjacent Stanley Gordon Field, says students put down their pencils in exchange for tennis shoes in an effort to encourage their athletic talents near the end of the academic calendar year.

“It’s a fun day for everyone” said vice-principal Dani Garner. “Our staff at the school work really hard to organize this event, as well we get students from the local high school’s Grade 12 leadership class, who volunteer their time to help out with the festivities.”

Events testing the students’ athleticism included long/high jump, discus, shot put and the 100-, 200-, 400- and 80-metre dashes. The day was split into two parts: in the morning distances were marked and times recorded with the top two finishers going to the district finals.

After a pleasant hot dog lunch break, students returned to a more relaxed and friendly relay race amongst the grades with many of the students as spectators to cheer them on.

Ribbons were given to all competitors in each sport to reward them for their hard work and athletic efforts. And though the forecast for the week predicted some wet weather, the sun peaked out for the activities.

In addition to the sport, the event gave universitybound high school students a chance to add some leadership and volunteer experience to their resume.

Garner summed it all up: “This year we had a great turnout, fantastic weather and wonderful leadership. Overall it couldn’t have turned out any better.”

Palsson school shows off the White stuff at district track meet On track: First aggregate honour in four years tops a great haul by local elementary team

Palsson Elementary School held it’s annual intermediate competitive Track and Field competition on May 21 at the Cowichan Sportsplex.

Fifty-two grade 4 and 5 students competed in a possible 6 events. The long jump, ball throw, 100 m, 200 m, 600 m and the 100 m skip.

All star athletes for Grade 4 were Kaitlyn (Kate) White, Kyle McKechnie, Keegan Mckinlay and Curtis Baird.

Grade 5 all stars were Jezlyn Cardinal, Morgan Shyshka, Ethan Brown and Ryder Wise, who all qualified for the maximum entries into the Cowichan Valley School District Track & Field Competition.

The District competition was held on Friday June 7. A team of 22 qualifying athletes represented Palsson, competing against A.B. Greenwell, Discovery, Cobble Hill, Khowhemun, Somenos, Alexander and Drinkwater Elementary schools, all of which sent their top athletes to the competition.

Schools were able to enter two girls and two boys per grade for each event, for a total of 16 athletes competing in each division for each event.

Ribbons were awarded up to 8th place.

Athletes were allowed to enter a maximum of three events plus a relay.

All eight of Palsson’s 100-metre sprint entrants placed in the finals. And, for the first time since 2009, a Palsson student won an Aggregate Award for top athlete.

To win the award, the athlete generally needs to place first in three events.

Grade 4 student, Kaitlyn White placed 1st in the long jump, the 100-metre and 200-metre sprints leading to her top athlete award for Grade 4 girls.

Kate also qualified for the 600-metre event, but was only able to enter a maximum of three events. The last Palsson student to win an Aggregate Award was Mackenzie Lacon, who edged out teammate Grace Matson to take the top spot for Grade 5 girls in 2009.

District Results from Palsson were exceptional, with the team placing in every division of every event except the Grade 5 girls 200-metre sprint.

Even with the absence of top athlete, Ethan Brown, Palsson had a strong showing.

BRANTING, Ralph Andy Ralph passed away peacefully in Duncan on June 20, 2013. He was born in Vancouver August 25, 1934 and moved to Lake Cowichan with his family in 1936 where he grew up, moving down the Valley to Duncan in 1955.

Ralph is survived by Rosemary, his wife of 58 years, daughter Barbara (Cam Foster) Jennifer, Derrick & Tony, son Brian (Mary-Ann) Andrew and Christopher, and daughter Karen (Kirk Palmer) Alanna & Eric. Also his brothers Angus (Evanne), Herb (Gailene), and many nieces and nephews, predeceased by sister Marlene (Alan Hudson).

With foresight and quiet determination Ralph excelled in all his endeavours: Playing baseball and fastball in many leagues on lower Vancouver Island and coaching baseball in the Valley; Building his first home and raising a young family while completing his Electrical Apprenticeship and Contractor’s License during his 20s; Running a successful electrical business for 50 years, the first 20 with partner Mike Langtry; In his 30s Ralph had the foresight to purchase lakefront property at Cowichan Lake providing a retreat as well as a gathering place for over 40 years, and a legacy for his family; Exploring North America by motor home with Rosemary, seeing every province and every state, and wintering in Palm Desert for 14 years where they made lasting friendships. Ralph was an active member of the Duncan Curling Club and Cowichan Golf Club.

Ralph fulfilled a lifelong dream in 2012, visiting his parents’ birthplace in Finland.

The family thanks the staff of Cairnsmore Place for their kindness. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 26, at 2:30 pm at Duncan United Church with tea following in the Church Hall. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Duncan United Church General Fund.

SMITH, Pearl (nee Haslam) 1908 - 2013 Pearl died peacefully on June 11th at the age of 104 years after a long, healthy and interesting life. Born in Vancouver to John and Betsy Haslam she grew up one of five children in the Riverbottom area. Her young adult life was spent teaching in a one room school in the Peace River.

After marrying Samuel Marcus Smith, she lived in Sooke, Shawnigan Lake and Skutz Falls. After her husband’s death in 1964, she lived briefly in Vancouver before settling in Duncan. A member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, her interests included gardening, music, poetry, cooking and languages. Having taken French and Latin at school she taught herself German and Greek.

She also played the piano and organ. Pearl was so proud of her only child Patrick, her six grandchildren; Diana, Marcus, Sean, Portia, Nevin and Aindrea as well as her ten great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank her Doctors; Faulkner, Rossouw, Manhas and McGregor, who over the years have taken such great care of Pearl. The family also wishes to thank the Chemainus Health Care Centre who are an amazingly caring and loving group of care givers.

SANRUD, Sigrid Elise June 5, 1914 – June 18, 2013

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mother. Sigrid was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, the second of eight children born to Birger and Elise Bergerson.  She was predeceased by her husband Adolf (1998), daughter Doris (1961), as well as sisters Borghild, Esther, Anna, brother Arne and sister-in-law and best friend Ragna. Sigrid is survived by daughters Sylvia Lingren (Lance), Ellen Neva (Richard), son Ron, six beloved grandchildren Steve (Clare), Kari (Brad), Scott, Mike (Christie), Gordon and Nelson, and her precious great-grandchildren Carter, Marly, Andrew, Ty, Parker and Ryan. She will be missed by sisters Ingrid, Elna and Elsie as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  Sigrid and Adolf were married in Saskatchewan and moved to B.C. in 1946. They resided briefly in Duncan, settling in Lake Cowichan where they raised their family. Sigrid was an amazing homemaker, welcoming family and friends into the home she lived in for 65 years. She had a passion for crossword puzzles, Scrabble and Rummikub, but her greatest joy was being with her family. Sigrid will be forever remembered as a kind and loving lady by all who knew her.

The family extends grateful thanks to Dr. Postuk, the compassionate care givers and staff at The Meadows (Sunridge) for the past two years, and to the wonderful nurses and staff on the 3rd floor at CDH.  A memorial gathering to honour Sigrid’s life will be held on Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Multi Purpose Room, Cowichan Lake Sports Arena, 311 South Shore Road, Lake Cowichan at 2:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, a contribution to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Brent Pinnell will be coming to the school from Duncan to teach senior classes in info tech, music and physical education. The Youth Drop-in program — for kids that will be entering Grade 6 and up — at Cowichan Lake Community Services will continue over the summer months each Wednesday afternoon from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

CLCS staff have planned a couple of great, full-day road trips that you will need to pre-register for. CLCS’s ‘fun bus' will journey for day trips to Victoria, visiting China Town, Beacon Hill Park and more, and to a secret beach in the Ladysmith area — a lifeguard will go on this trip with the group. There is limited space for these trips and registration is on a first come first serve basis. the cost for both trips is $30.

•CLCS is looking to borrow chocolate molds that are anything but Christmas themed for their kids' program on July 9 and 10. If you have any that you can lend out for a few days please drop them off at Community Services, 121 Point Ideal Road, and make sure your name is attached to them so they can get them back to you.

They also need about 15, two-litre pop bottles and about 10 Classico pesto mason jars (or jars that are about four ounces) for craft projects with the kids. If you have some to donate please drop them off or call 250-7496822.

• The fun bus has been decked out with a new sound system thanks to a $100 donation from Grade 11 student Carmen Brooks. She received the $100 with her Cowichan volunteer award and paid it forward. Thanks to some eagle-eye shopping by Becca at CLCS and a Laker at Klean Kustomz (in Duncan) installing it at half price, the bus will now rock to a great system that even includes an iPod plug-in.
