Five to Ten Servings A Day!

This season, we were able to expand the vegetable garden in our yard and immediately, I had visions of rows over rows of peas and carrots and bushes full of berries; then in the fall a cornucopia of fresh vegetables and in the winter a pantry laden with canned and pickled produce. We envisioned our trip to the greenhouse as a shopping extravaganza, loading up the cart with everything our hearts desired.

When we actually got planting, reality set in.

Spaced out according to the directions on the package, the strawberry plants already covered a considerable area in the new garden plot, spreading into an area we had earmarked for potatoes. This meant, we decided to stick to one type of potato, instead of planting a couple of different varieties.

After that, in went the peas, again space dictated that one row would have to do instead of the two originally planned.

This left us with some space to sow carrots, radishes, Swiss chard and lettuce. A few pepper plants are grouped into an odd shaped corner.

Keeping in mind that we need to have access to water, weed, harvest, etc. - all of a sudden the garden had reached its capacity. Some new herbs have already been relegated to planters around the garden plot and tomatoes will have to follow suit; it is a good thing that cherry-size tomatoes are our family's favourite.

Apparently, the dinner table is not the only place where our eyes can get bigger than our bellies. It is extremely tempting to want to plant all your favourites in the vegetable garden. However, you will soon find out that a couple of plants - given the proper room to grow - can go a long way in giving you an abundant harvest.

“How much do I plant?” is a question most vegetable gardeners ask themselves, regardless of whether they are just starting out or are experienced gardeners, trying to keep things under control. Beside the available space, other factors determining the size of your vegetable plot will likely be the amount of vegetables you think you will need as well as the amount of work and time you want to spend. Your vegetable garden should be fun - not a burden.

Choose vegetables that you and your family enjoy. Make sure they can be grown successfully in your area and keep in mind that some crops utilize space better than others. There are several popular vegetables that can be produced quite efficiently, even in a small garden. They include many greens, beets, onions, broccoli and cabbage, tomatoes, carrots and radishes and more.

Proper spacing between rows is important to allow for the optimal growth of plants as well as ease of cultivation and the efficient use of space.

Seed packages will tell you how deep to sow and how much space to leave between plants and between rows. In most cases, you should plan on having at least a foot from one row to the next.

If you are planting seedlings, many plant tags will give you that information as well. If you are unsure, ask the greenhouse experts for advice.

The trickiest part is knowing how much of each vegetable to plant. It really depends on how well things grow in your garden, which vegetables you prefer and how often you will be eating it.

You might not know how many vegetables to plant for your family until you have a few years of experience under your belt. And even then, tastes change and families grow. So whether you stick with classic favourites or experiment with more exotic flavours, have fun and look forward to some yummy food coming out of your garden this season.

Missing men’s truck found in falls Submitted

On Sunday, June 16, the truck believed to belong to the two missing males was located in Findlay Creek Falls.

Police determined that the two males reported missing June 9 went off the Findlay Creek Forest Service Road, down a steep embankment and into the water. Search and rescue teams combed the area at the time without success.

Over the week the water level dropped and there was increased clarity. With better conditions a team of sixteen Swift Water Rescue Technicians searched the area and located the truck at the top of the falls wedged up against a rock outcropping. The truck is fully submerged and appears badly damaged.

The search team attempted to use an underwater camera but the swift flowing water prevented teams from directing the camera into effective positions.

RCMP in Cranbrook are currently investigating a double stabbing which occurred early Sunday morning in the 17th Ave North area of the City. Just before 4am on Sunday, June 16th, 2013 Cranbrook RCMP responded to a report of a double stabbing in the area of 17th Avenue and 8th Street North, Cranbrook.

The police investigation determined that two males in their 20’s were walking in the area when they were approached by an unknown male suspect who accused them of trying to steal something. The suspect became more belligerent and attacked both victims. It was only after the suspect left that the two victims realized they were bleeding and had been stabbed by an edged weapon.

This violent attack was completely unprovoked and the victims were transported to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital by BC Ambulance Service and underwent surgery for serious but non-life threatening injuries and still remain in the hospital at this time.

The Cranbrook RCMP are seeking the assistance of anyone who may have observed or heard anything suspicious in the early morning hours in that area and are concentrating their investigation in the area of Kootenay Street North through to Victoria Avenue in the 400 to 1000 block.

At this early stage, the police believe this attack may be in retaliation for an earlier incident and is a case of mistaken identity.

Deer can be very protective of their fawns at this time of year. The City is urging caution and keeping dogs on a leash during fawning season.

Submitted Residents continue to be urged to use both common sense and caution, as the 2013 fawning season begins to wind down, according to the City of Cranbrook.

“Late May through the end of June is normally the time does give birth to their fawns. Fawns born early in the season are now becoming more active and does are being much more wary of their surroundings and are alert for potential threats,” says Mayor Wayne Stetski. “Please don’t approach deer or their fawns. Give the deer plenty of space to move or to leave the area; don’t walk closer, choose another route.

Be sure to walk your dog on a leash and be ready to let go if a deer threatens.”

“We are just beginning to get complaints of deer aggression from our residents,” says Chris Zettel, Corporate Communications Officer for the City of Cranbrook. “In 2012, over 90 percent of the aggression complaints the City received came from people out walking their dogs. It is too early to tell if we’ll see the same results for 2013. We are just asking you to please be careful and to report any deer aggression.”

Striving for excellence in agri-food education Submitted Creston Valley’s agriculture sector has the potential to help feed the region and drive local community and economic development.

In order to realize this potential, College of the Rockies (COTR), the agriculture sector and other community partners will be exploring what programs, services and facilities for agri-food education would best meet local needs. The project is being funded in part with $17,000 from Columbia Basin Trust (CBT).

“Changing demographic, economic and environmental conditions are demanding new approaches to farming and food produc-

tion,” said Laura Hannant, COTR Facilitator, Partnerships for Community Development.

“This project will enable us to develop adequate, accessible supports that will help make it possible to adapt to these changes or to enter these fields and succeed.”

Examples of potential programming include courses on beginner farmer training, farm/ agri-business succession planning, environmental farm planning, dyke maintenance and agritourism.

“This is very inspiring to us, because it is probably only in the last five years that we have really met young folks who are wanting to farm again and they need to be supported,” said Joanne Ga-

School District trustee honoured Bev Bellina was presented with the Nine Year Service Recognition Award by School District 5 (SD5) Board chair, Frank Lento, at Tuesday’s Board meeting on June 11th.

“Bev’s a team player,” says Lento. “She’s established great working relationships with her fellow Board members, staff and administration, with Parent Advisory Councils (PACs) and students. She’s a real asset to the Board and to her community”.

Bellina is also involved in the larger BC Trustee community, both as SD5 Board representative for the BC School Trustee’s Association (BCSTA) and BC Public School Employer’s Association (BCPSEA) and as president of the local Kootenay Boundary Branch (KBB) of Trustees.

Bellina grew up in Toronto but has been a resident of Sparwood for over forty years.

During this time Bellina was actively involved with a number of organizations including the Hospital Auxiliary and Board, Elk Valley South Country (EVSC) Health Council and the Chamber of Commerce.

“I’ve been volunteering in my community since I first arrived in 1972, beginning with the Ways and Means Committee at the Rec Centre,” says Bellina, who was also a District of Sparwood Councillor for nine years prior to running for Trustee in 2004.

“I enjoy great personal satisfaction doing the best job I can on whatever I’m tasked with,” says Bellina, adding that one of her favourite “tasks” is attending the graduation ceremonies each year.

“Attending the graduation festivities and being able to address the students; speaking to students personally and honouring their achievements is a real highlight for me.”

Despite her nine year long service award Bellina has no intention of stepping down anytime soon. “I’ll continue to run for school trustee as it’s the most rewarding work I’ve ever been involved in. I like staying current with public education and being part of the process.”

Regional District gears up for Columbia Valley town hall meetings Residents and property owners will have the opportunity to say what is on their minds and air concerns as the Regional District of East Kootenay will be kicking off its 2013 Town Hall Meetings in the Columbia Valley next week.

“The goal of the Town Hall Meetings is to create conversations with residents and property owners in Electoral Areas F and G,” says Electoral Area F Director Wendy Booth. “This year we are also adding an exciting new ele-

ment. At the Town Hall Meetings in Fairmont and Edgewater, we will be making a presentation to our Electoral Area Volunteers of the Year, so we are looking forward to a good turnout at the meetings.”

Barrels of fun at this year’s Barrel O Rama

by Borderline Barrel Racing Club Barrel O Rama and Team Roping 2013 were held at the Wycliffe Exhibition Grounds recently. It was a great action packed weekend of barrel racing and team roping. Competitors came from Alberta, British Columbia and Montana.

Classes consisted of mini horses and beginner riders to open pro level horses and riders.

Over $15,000 in prizes

were on display in the Tamarack Centre for three weeks prior to the event, all of which were donated by our many generous sponsors. $10,000 in cash was also paid out in the different divisions.

Our junior and adult team roping was put on by Jodi Savage and Jason Statham of Cranbrook.

Outstanding young ropers of the future will give any of our adult ropers in the area a run for their money.

Reducing waste with the Clean Bin Project

Almost 1500 elementary students and 100 staff from seven Cranbrook elementary schools participated in Wildsight’s Clean Bin Project. The students took a very close look at the waste at their schools, and challenged themselves to reduce it for a week. Project coordinator, Skye McDougall, said that the results were fantastic.

“Every school was successful in reducing waste,” she said.

After watching The Clean Bin Project, a movie that tells the tale of a Vancouver couple who challenged themselves to produce no waste for a year, the staff and students put their heads together with McDougall to brainstorm how they too, could reduce their garbage. They studied a day’s worth of garbage - its weight and the number of bags filled - and then dissected it. A mucky job, but the participants enthusiastically conducted their waste audit to separate items into compost, recycling, and garbage. Everyone then discussed options for reducing waste at their school and why they should be thinking about it.

“The kids were geared up and ready to begin their week-long challenge,” said McDougall. “Each class had a bucket provided for compost, and staff and students were keen to begin.”

Earth Machine Composters, donated in partnership from RDEK and Wildsight, were set up at four schools, and McDougall was impressed to see that three schools already had compost programs running. She said that composting dramatically reduces the amount of trash and subsequently, the amount of methane

created from organic waste in the landfill.

During the week, students and staff really stepped up to the challenge. They encouraged each other to bring waste-free lunches and use reusable containers rather than Ziploc bags or plastic wrap, and bring reusable drink containers instead of juice boxes, bottles or cans.

“I returned to the schools at the end of the challenge week for an assembly to celebrate the successes of the project,” said McDougall. “The kids were excited to find out if their efforts had made a difference - custodians kept the garbage from the day before for comparison with the initial weigh-in.”

McDougall said that the results were incredible.

“Every school was successful in reducing waste. Results ranged from over two kilograms (5 pounds) to almost 5 kilograms (11 pounds),” said McDougall, “and that’s per day, so this means that schools reduced their garbage between 10 to 25 per cent, which is an amazing effort.”

McDougall said that kudos goes to the following Cranbrook schools: Kootenay Orchards, Amy Woodland, Kootenay Christian Academy, Highlands, Gordon Terrace, Steeples, TM Roberts and the Boys and Girls Club.

Each student was given a sticker from Wildsight to thank students for their efforts and to remind them to continue their efforts in reducing waste. Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook gratefully acknowledges the financial support of Columbia Basin Trust.

Robotics team takes bronze in national competition

Working tirelessly since September, the robotics team has had quite a year. Their journey began with looking at the scope document provided by Skills Canada that outlined the specifications for this year’s robot challenge.

The team consists of Landon Harvey, Derek Johnson, Edmond Yoo, Teacher/Coach Mr. Bill Walker and technical support from Mr. John Milner. Their task was to design and construct a robot that was essentially a radio controlled fork lift that would perform specific tasks. Their initial goal was to compete at the Provincial level, representing the Kootenays in Abbotsford. The robot, called R2Z2, along with the team, performed phenomenally at the Provincials, winning gold!

The next step involved tweaking the robot in preparation for competition at the National level in Vancouver in early June as part of Team BC. The team competed against other teams from across Canada in a fast paced ac-

Cycling to raise awareness about diabetes

By Lorne Eckersley Members of his family and friends have suffered and died from the complications of diabetes and Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie wants to help put a stop to the suffering.

On Friday morning, Louie will climb on a bike in Bonners Ferry and start out his ride home by crossing the bridge over the Kootenay River and making the long uphill climb toward Three Mile.

He won’t be raising money, just awareness.

“This ride was inspired as tribute to my mentor, Chief Raymond Abraham of the Kootenai Tribe in Bonners Ferry,” Louie said on Friday.

Abraham, a hereditary chief, died five years ago from diabetes complications.

“It was a huge loss for our nation,” he said.

“For me, personally, he took me under his wing.

I know now that he was mentoring a future leader.”

Louie witnesses the effects of diabetes every day. His wife, Angie, is one of many Lower Kootenay Band members to suffer from the disease.

“It requires a huge lifestyle change,” he said. “A more active life and better diet, for instance.”

In the 1970s, Louie said, Abraham declared a peaceful war on the United States in an effort to bring attention to the appalling conditions many First Nations people lived, and continue to live, in.

“It will be very meaningful for me when I ride across the Bonners Ferry bridge, then start up the hill,” Louie said.

“That hill is very sym-

bolic of the uphill climb that occurs when a person is diagnosed with diabetes.” For symbolic reasons, too, he said cool, rainy weather would only add to the message he wants to deliver.

On his ride, Louie will be joined by two others from Lower Kootenay, and he said the support from the Creston business community has been heartening.

In preparation for the 58-kilometre ride, he has been training almost daily since December.

Workouts at the Creston Fitness Centre have provided a camaraderie he has come to enjoy in his early morning sessions. And the gym has donated a one-year gym

pass that will given out as a prize during National Aboriginal Day festivities on Friday.

Pharmasave’s Mike Ramaradhya and Jodie McBlain have been “incredibly generous,” he said. “I asked for a small donation like diabetes testing strips and they came back to me with a one-year pass to the Creston and District Community Complex fitness centre. I didn’t know what to say.”

After training for months on a heavy mountain bike, he is grateful to Nadan Nessie Gear, Canyon Street’s outdoor equipment retailer and renter, which is giving him “a great deal” on the use of a lightweight road bike.

“I am truly grateful for their support on what I see as a small scale awareness ride,” he said. “I was a supply tech in the Canadian Armed Forces and my job was to be a lifeline to the troops, getting them whatever they needed. Now others are taking on the same role

for me.”

Prevention is key to Louie’s message.

“When I look around my community, there aren’t many old men,” he said. “I want to live long enough to become an elder and a grandfather, but I know I have to work to get there.

He and his co-riders will set out from Bonners Ferry at 7 a.m. and he plans to arrive before noon, during the Aboriginal Day celebration, which runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Events will include a teepeeraising contest, fry bread-making competition, storytelling in a tipi, a traditional lunch, crafts booths, pine needle basket-making and a round dance.

“I am ready for anything I encounter on Friday — let it rain or snow!” he said. “Then we are going to celebrate.”

Throughout the year at various venues: schools, service clubs, faith organizations, trade fairs, community organizations, public meetings, we speak and have displays. We work with different

groups in our region establishing a good working relationship to provide programs that are effective in educating and making people aware of ABI. We promote the use of helmets in sports all year long, not just summer. Whether it be on a bicycle or a snow sport, the helmet is effective in the prevention of brain injury.

It is important to recognize that brain injury also occurs through non-traumatic causes such as: stroke, anoxia, substance abuse and heart attacks. The effects are equally devastating for the individual and families. If you have acquired a brain injury from a sporting activity fall or any other cause, know there is help and you do not have to do this alone!

What is Brain Injury?

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is defined as “damage to the brain which occurs after birth and is not related to congenital disorder or a degenerative disease”.

These impairments may be either temporary or permanent and

cause partial or total function disability and this may affect social behaviors.

The East Kootenay Brain Injury Association (EKBIA) provides support to both persons with brain injury and those who care about them to achieve an improved quality of life.

EKBIA provides a safe and supportive environment for individuals with brain injury to meet, share and help one another.

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors is considering an application by Randy and Jody Jolie to amend the Moyie and Area Land Use Bylaw. If approved, the amendments will change the designation of the property to accommodate a 2 lot subdivision. The subject property is located on Twin Lakes Road about 7 kms south of Cranbrook and is shown on the attached map.

Bylaw No. 2476 cited as “Regional District of East Kootenay – Moyie and Area Land Use Bylaw No. 2070, 2008 – Amendment Bylaw No. 6, 2013 (Twin Lakes Road / Jolie)” will amend the land use designation of the subject property from RR-60, Rural Resource Zone to RR-2, Rural Residential (Small Holding) Zone.

A public hearing will be held at: Regional District of East Kootenay 19 - 24th Ave S Cranbrook, BC Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 4:00 pm The Board has delegated the holding of this hearing to the Directors for Electoral Area C and the City of Cranbrook.

OBITUARY Lenora Mae Wesche "Lee" 1937 - 2013 It is with great sorrow that the family of Lenora Wesche announces her sudden passing on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 in Kimberley, British Columbia at 76 years of age.

Lee was born on January 27, 1937 in Kamloops, British Columbia. She loved her grandkids, great grandkids, flowers, gardening, family gatherings, friends, camping, campfires and baking cookies for the kids. She will be sadly missed.

Lee is survived by her long time companion Tom Richardson; her children Glenda (Ray) Moore, Dale (Bernice) Wesche and Glenn (Anna) Wesche; grandchildren Tyler Moore, Noah (Andrea) Wesche, Levi Wesche, Jared (Trena) Wesche, Kaitlynn Wesche; great grandchildren Bella Wesche and Emma Wesche; her brother Gary (Mary-Ann) Parkinson and her sister Linda (Bob) Osborne.

She was predeceased by her parents Gordon and Amelia Parkinson, her husband Laurie Wesche; her brothers Ted Parkinson and Harold Parkinson; and her grandchildren Madeliene Wesche, Spencer Moore and Dallas Moore.
