Beyond the Fringe Fringe Festival’s a full on focus of edgy arts, theatre SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News

The first annual Fringe Festival is slated to kick off Friday night in Port Alberni, leading into a weekend chocka-block full of arts and entertainment in the Uptown area.

Fringe festivals provide a venue for alternative theatre, and a forum for different theatre pieces to be run constantly (see a complete pull-out schedule in the News today).

Fringe is not mainstream. It’s poetry, spoken word, short, long, new, experienced.

“Fringe can be anything,” said Gwynne Hunt, who ran a similar event in the Fraser Valley for 14 years. Hunt owns Main Artery, the art store on Argyle Street, and runs the Art Matters Society.

“Colleen Clancy is doing a performance piece about a poem she wrote, and there’s music with it too,” Hunt said. “Then there’s your mainstream one you can

play from the Capitol Theatre.”

There are one-person acts, like Cougar Annie Tales, or dance troupes, like Broken Rhythm.

Hunt said her measure of success is found in the number of out-of-town acts that booked to play the inaugural Alberni Valley Fringe Festival.

“It was the out-of-town shows that I was pleased wanted to come here,” she said. “They wanted to be part of the first Fringe.”

Jake West from Chilliwack was the first act to sign up. “He wanted to be part of the first one,” says Hunt, adding that West used to live in Qualicum Beach.

Rosie’s Bitts of Tease Cabaret is already touring the mid- and North Island and was able to add Port Alberni to its show. Oblivion, from New Westminster, are friends of Hunts.

“They were curious,” she said.

This show will mark the first time Broken Rhythms have brought their show, Grim, out of Victoria.

A well know sculptor in native art in Port Alberni, Jason Titian, is presenting a play at the Fringe Festival this weekend.

The Birth of Releasing Light Kreations is a one-man theatrical performance where Titian is impersonating different characters— with impressive papier-mâché masks he made himself—who are leading him on a spiritual journey toward inner peace though his life experiences.

This presentation is a deep monologue of the Spirit who guides every being to achieve greater spirituality in their lifetime, answering troubling

questions each of us might have.

Through each event in life, we are guided but we have to be able to listen to the sometimesfaint messages murmured by the Spirit, says Titian.

Through this storytelling, Titian wants to show and share the Nuu-chuh-nulth cultural diversity; he wants —for his first time on the scene as a storyteller—to share his aboriginal culture and spirit.

Bettina Thomas will also be on scene helping Titian in his presentation.

You can see The Birth of Releasing Light Kreations at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday, June 22 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, June 23 at 2 p.m.

Another transformation taking place onstage involves Jen Fisher-Bradley. Even though she is mostly known for her political views as well as nicknamed the “seeds lady” for her urban farming, Fisher-Bradley felt the push to write her play, Connections, as—like she said— theatre is often a great way to pass on a message.

weekend. The event replaces the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, which was cancelled last month.

“We were going to have a movie marathon as a fundraiser but put

it aside,” Huysmans said. But when the relay event — originally slated for 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on June 22-23 at Bob Dailey Stadium — was cancelled, Huysmans and Team PTC

scrambled to pull together their event.

Huysmans said Landmark Cinema immediately jumped on board.

The marathon officially kicks off at 11 p.m. on Saturday, but Huysmans said families are encouraged to come out for the 9 p.m. 3-D movie, Disney Pixar’s Monsters University.

The $100,000 jump in providing water taxi service between Meares Island and Tofino will be the subject of a meeting between the Alberni Valley school district and the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations next week.

Last week, the Alberni Valley News reported that it cost the district $400,000 to take up to 35 students on a 10-minute water taxi ride between the Village of Opitsaht to their school in Tofino. This cost was an increase from $306,000 two years ago.

The News has since learned the number of students is closer to 26 and the school attendance rate for students living in Opitsaht is poor.

“The two boats that were coming over were half-full,” said superintendent Cam Pinkerton. He called the situation a “misunderstanding” with the water taxi operator and not an

The boat has a capacity of up to 12 students per trip.

Pinkerton could not explain how two halffull boat trips and the occasional extra trips for special events can equal $400,000.

Pinkerton said the school board only learned about this oversight earlier this year after a review of all school district expenses was conducted. This review was ordered after the province slashed its funding for the school district.

The Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations was contracted to provide water taxi service eight years ago, which they in turn

subcontracted to an individual. It was a five-year contract which was extended for one year three times.

The water taxi bill was $306,000 in the 2009-2010 budget, jumping to $410,000 in 2010-2011 and remaining about the same last year.

Upon learning about the discrepancy, the school district put the water taxi contract out to tender.

Pinkerton added that it was officials with the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation that requested this meeting.

SD 70 secretarytreasurer Lindsay Cheetham said a new five-year, water taxi contract has been awarded to West Coast Aquatic Safaris. Details of the new contract, which Cheetham said is “less” than the previous one and will start in September, was not made public by newspaper deadline. Pinkerton said those details will be released once the contracts are officially signed.

The Hupacasath First Nation is renewing plans to replace the Whaler’s Canoe structure at Victoria Quay with a new interpretive centre and multicultural tourism promotion centre.

The Hupacasath has approached Port Alberni city council to renew its lease of property at 4586 Victoria Quay, where the Whaler’s Canoe sculpture is presently housed behind wood and plexiglass.

Hupacasath Chief Councillor Steven Tatoosh said the Whaler’s Canoe structure “was only supposed to be a temporary structure.

They will have team T-shirts for the teams that signed up for the Relay, and they re-activated the fundraising site at Huysmans’ request so funds could still be raised.

There will be a Zumba event in the lobby in the middle of the night too. Tickets for Reel-ay for Life are on sale now at the theatre.

West Coast parents push for French program CHRISTOPHER SUN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The West Coast chapter of Canadian Parents for French (CPF) feel their request to bring French immersion to the Tofino and Ucluelet area is falling on deaf ears.

CPF Pacific Rim president Denise Aujla said West Coast parents have tried since 2011 to convince School District 70 that there is a want and need for French Immersion, but the response has been there is no money and there aren’t enough bodies to fill the classrooms—facts that she disputes.

“We would have had 28 kids who would have started in fall 2012,” Aujla said, explaining the results of a survey conducted by her group and the school district in

February 2012.

“When I first taught in Saanich, it was a pilot program with Grade 7’s in 1986 and we had a class of 21.

“Twenty-eight is a large number. It’s enough to form at least one classroom.”

Aujla said there is extra funding from both the provincial and federal government that the school district can tap to bring the cost down. She expressed disappointment that superintendent Cam Pinkerton has said he would consider bringing French immersion to the West Coast if there are at least 44 children.

“Nowhere in B.C. requires this regulation,” Aujla said.

“It’s made up to make it not possible.”

Aujla is a retired French teacher and her husband is also a retired educator. She

has been asked by many parents to start up a private school to teach French, but she would rather see the public school system offer it.

She acknowledged the large First Nations population in the area and the desire for their language and culture be taught, but she sees this as a positive. She cited a school in Hazelton where a trilingual program is offered, teaching students English, French and a First Nation language.

“Parents from First Nation communities wouldn’t mind their kids learning a third language,” Aujla said.

“There is a person who is half First Nations and half French in Tofino who got married, live on a reserve, have three children and they would love to see this happen.”

Deddeda White is a professional photographer and an expectant mom who lives in Tofino. Her husband, Sean, was actually taught French

by Aujla.

“He went to French Immersion in Victoria and because of his French language skills, he has had job opportunities that he would have never had,” White said, explaining that Sean is a photographer and filmmaker who has worked internationally.

“I am expecting

my first baby in September and would love to stay in Tofino and not have to move to put our child in French Immersion.”

Both Aujla and White said they know of parents who have and will end up moving because they feel strongly about their children learning both of Canada’s official languages.

Superintendent Cam Pinkerton said he has actually heard strong opposition from First Nations, who make up 60 per cent of the population on the

“We are an enormous surfing destination,” Mayor said, adding that may draw Europeans and South Americans. “We are the surfing capital of the country and we are recognized for that.”

Mayor explained that in Germany, Grade 10 students must spend a year outside of the country and Tofino would likely pique interest.

Superintendent Cam Pinkerton acknowledged Mayor’s concern.

“Their families don’t want them to go out to a wilderness spot because they are afraid of the wilderness,” Pinkerton explained, saying one year doesn’t bring as much money in as a person staying longer.

“We focused on a longer term model where these kids come here for seven years, which is more sustaining for us.”

Pinkerton added now that an ongoing recruitment program with China has been established, he will set his sights on other places.

He plans on attending the International Consultants for Education and Fairs conference in Vancouver next year, which is a German based organization that facilitates student recruitment.

Chinese consul general to visit Valley Thursday Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

The consul general of the People’s Republic of China in Vancouver is visiting Port Alberni on Thursday, accepting an invitation from the mayor.

This will be consul general Liu Fei’s first visit to the Alberni Valley. Port Alberni mayor John Douglas visited China last month, part of a School District 70 student recruitment contingent, and met Liu a few times.

On a recent visit to Vancouver, he saw Liu after a meeting and extended an invitation again.

Now that she has accepted, she will spend four hours touring the city and meeting with representatives from the city, port authority and school district

before leaving.

“The first goal is just get her to know the city, what we’re like and show her that we are open for business,” Douglas said. “The second goal is to show how we are positioning ourselves in being a container transshipping port.”

The third item Douglas wants to bring to Liu’s attention is the school district’s drive to become a destination for Chinese students to complete their schooling. He added that there are scholarships available for students here to go to China, which have not been fully utilized.

Douglas said this visit will open more doors for Chinese investment in Port Alberni and further build upon this new relationship.

No one wins with new lines What ails the NDP? Plenty, says Fletcher A new federal electoral boundary proposal from MP John Duncan is a classic good news-bad news scenario for the Comox Valley.

The good news is that Courtenay would not be split in half. The bad news is that Cumberland would be.

Part of the village would remain in Vancouver Island North to be represented by a member of Parliament who is presumably familiar with the municipality and its interaction with the rest of the Comox Valley.

The rest of Cumberland — the inhabited portion — would be hived off to become part of a riding that also includes Port Alberni, Parksville and Qualicum Beach, along with a section of Nanaimo.

The good news again is that this concept would avoid shifting Courtenay on one side of the Puntledge-Courtenay River and all of Cumberland to Nanaimo-Alberni.

That was originally proposed by the B.C. Electoral Boundaries Commission in one of its regular riding redistributions.

At least that scenario would give the Comox Valley section of the disparate riding enough critical mass that an MP (most likely based in Parksville, Qualicum Beach or Nanaimo) would have to pay some attention to the people who lived in it.

How much serious attention do you think downtown Cumberland would get from its new MP? Current Nanaimo-Alberni MP James Lunney lives near Parksville.

The offensive part of Duncan’s proposal is that, while Courtenay was in the loop, the Village of Cumberland was never contacted directly to be informed or – God forbid – consulted. Cumberland councillors are rightly concerned about the ramifications of Duncan’s concept.

Mayor Larry Jangula of Courtenay describes it as a good compromise, and democracy. To us this sounds like a backroom deal cooked up behind Cumberland’s back. It stinks.

ICTORIA – After 34 NDP MLAs were sworn in to continue a stretch of opposition that will reach at least 16 years, leader Adrian Dix took a few questions about his future.

The party’s provincial council will meet June 21 to set the terms of reference for a review of the party’s dismal election performance, Dix told reporters. He repeated that his performance won’t be spared, and ticked off some conventional wisdom about the NDP campaign.

Dix mentioned the alleged lack of “negative” ads, the local campaigns (read candidates), the decreasing reliability of polls and, when pressed, his surprise decision to come out against the proposed twinning of the TransMountain oil pipeline.

Like last week’s hysteria

over a tiny leak in that pipeline, these are great sound bites for the short attention spans of the modern media. But they don’t explain much.

This all-powerful NDP provincial council is a case in point. A glimpse into its inner workings was provided by a summary of an NDP policy development workshop called “Imagine Our Future” that was leaked by the B.C. Liberals in the final days of the campaign.

The workshop took place in November 2010, coincidentally at the same provincial council meeting where the revolt against former leader Carole James tumbled into the open. While 13 caucus members were knifing their leader for reasons they still can’t or won’t articulate in public – a glaring problem in itself – the backroom policy brainstorm revealed a deeper malaise.

Among the “dream tree” notions put forward in

the workshop was “free” post-secondary tuition and public transit, along with raising wages and lowering fees for daycare.

This isn’t a dream tree, it’s a money tree.

Remember, this is the NDP’s ruling body, not a high school “social justice” class or an Occupy Vancouver squat.

Showing a glimmer of adult supervision, the workshop table on “equitable tax policy” even identified the problem.

Its first recommendation: “Increase our economic and financial literacy to gain credibility.”

The “public ownership” table really got radical.

Scrap public-private partnerships, the basis of most government construction today.

“Nationalize” independent power projects, in the Venezuelan style of state seizure of private assets. And perhaps most incredibly, tear up the

trade agreement between Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C. that harmonizes transport truck regulations and so forth.

In the real world, the four western premiers met this week in Winnipeg. And the three-province project now called “New West Partnership” will continue to dismantle archaic interprovincial barriers.

Why would the NDP be secretly against that?

Because it’s also a “labour mobility” agreement.

This harkens back to a supposed golden age in Canada, when two corporate titans shared the beer business, producing identical bland lager from identical factories in identical stubby bottles. Interprovincial trade in these stubbies was strictly forbidden, requiring each province to have a big unionized brewery to make uniformly bad beer for the proletariat.

This is the power of a monopoly union. And because of it, this was how governments tried to “create jobs.”

Former HEU and BCGEU presidents now sit in the NDP caucus, critics for health and “green” jobs respectively.

Although the most pressing health need in our community is an expansion of our hospital to 60 beds, no medical professional, no politician, or, indeed, any member of the public is saying anything about it publicly.

As a result, patients are frequently unable to get beds in rooms on admission and are just as frequently tossed out prematurely.

Certainly the hospital is no place for patients requiring long-term care, but needed hospital expansion to its capacity should be the first thing on everyone’s minds.

I’ve been speaking about the much needed increase in hospital beds for years, to no effect whatsoever.

The local population, while not growing substantially, is aging and more baby-boomers are being encouraged to move to the Valley-- a recipe for disaster.

Clearly, after 21 years of no new extended-care buildings, we also need another multilevel care facility

and the old Alberni District Secondary School site is the perfect place for it.

In the absence of the above capital projects, more support for home care, while needed and beneficial, will not alone solve our problems.

We’re RV land and I love it To the Editor,

Re: municipal bylaw permitting front yard parking for RVs. In Port Alberni one expects to see a boat and/or RV parked on every property —whether at the back, side, or front.

After all, it is private property but this is also “The Ultimate Fishing Town” and contrary to the snobbish suggestion they are “an eyesore”, an RV parked in a front yard is part of what gives this city it’s own special character.

I love it!

Besides demonstrating a refreshingly laidback approach to over-regulation, allowing RV parking on citizens’ lots tells visitors to Port Alberni that the folks here do well enough to own RVs and that

they like to balance hard work with the fun of enjoying playground we live in.

So bring ‘em ‘n’ park ‘em!

Recycling fun at new depot To the Editor,

The undersigned would like to say how much we appreciate Karen Burnett and Andy Wilkinson for their exceptionally friendly and competent service in the Sun Coast Recycling Depot located at 3620 Third Ave. in Port Alberni.

Without exception, these staff give attentive service and make the somewhat dreary chore of sorting through one’s recycling tolerable and even fun. With a smile, they invariably help to unload and sort items, so that all recycled goods are put in the appropriate bins.

It is so nice to have a central location on Third Avenue to be able to bring our recycled goods, and I am sure it encourages local people to recycle due to convenience and helps to reduce overall garbage volumes city-wide.

The depot is kept very

clean and organized and is easy to use.

Indeed it is always busy there when I drop in, and yet each person receives the same welcoming attitude and service.

Edna and I were discussing how invaluable this service is, how much we appreciate their level of customer service.

Thus, we decided to write a letter of thanks.

Kudos to Karen and Andy for making recycling an unusually pleasant and fun experience! We hope to see you in that location for many years to come.

Every day we see passionate communities who rally to join the fight against cancer and we are incredibly grateful.

But once in a while, a community goes above and beyond, demonstrating a fierce commitment to the fight, deep rooted camaraderie and a heart so big that we are stopped in our tracks to simply say ‘wow.’

Port Alberni is one

of those communities.

Over the last couple of weeks we have reached out to more than 60 Port Alberni residents who were registered to participate in this year’s Relay For Life. We talked about why the relay was postponed and what we could do differently next year to make sure the event was successful.

These conversations were amazing.

We heard a story of one relay team that is travelling to Nanaimo for its event so they can continue to support their loved one who is battling cancer.

We heard about another team that is gathering at the Bob Dailey Stadium on what would have been Port Alberni’s Relay day, June 22, and will walk a lap of the track so the teammates can celebrate, remember and fight back.

Wow. Thank you, Port Alberni. Thank you for showing us you care about Relay and most importantly, that you care so deeply for creating a world where no one needs to fear cancer. We can’t wait for 2014.

Old ADSS demolition close CHRISTOPHER SUN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The old Alberni District Secondary School property is still for sale and the building will be demolished soon, making it easier for a potential buyer to

develop the site.

Alberni school district superintendent Cam Pinkerton said there was a request for proposal issued to tear down the 62 year old building, which will not cost the school district extra

money.

“There is no extra cost as it is part of what we got in the funding to build the new ADSS,” Pinkerton said. “It will be better to sell it as green space so a buyer won’t have to worry about how

long it would take to teardown and start developing.”

The school, located on Burde Street, was opened in 1951 and closed last year.

VAST lease renewed for a year VAST will remain at its current location on 10th Avenue as the school district has renewed its lease for a significantly cheaper price.

The school district signed a one year lease for $80,000, with an option to extend.

Previously the school district paid $150,000 a year.

Pinkerton said the school trustees chose to keep VAST at its present location, but with the constant drop in student enrolment, it will eventually make more sense to move Vast into a school district owned facility.

“We have space at Maquinna school,” Pinkerton said, when asked if there are any schools that can share space with Vast.

“There are about four to five classrooms that are empty rooms.

They are boarded up and not being used.”

However, Pinkerton said the location is not centrally located to where the majority of Vast students live and he isn’t sure if putting VAST together with another school would be a good fit.

Wood Elementary is the most ideal location and while there has been public outcry to prevent the closure of the school, it might become a reality if present enrolment figures keep going down.

“We are losing the equivalent of one Wood school every year,” Pinkerton said, explaining there is 142 students enrolled at Wood school this year, which is equivalent to how many students Port Alberni loses every year. “The central part of Port Alberni is attracting lots of new families, but we have to look at what’s best for the whole district though.”

Life’s lessons learned in shop classes SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News

Students in Mike Mahovlic’s Wood Tech 8 class at École EJ Dunn Middle School will sit a little prouder when they visit McLean Mill National Historic Site this summer.

One of Mahovlic’s classes built wooden benches that have been placed around the historic site.

The project could turn into a regular collaboration between the woodworking class and the mill.

“Mike had initially approached me for a donation of lumber,” McLean Mill manager Neil Malbon said.

“They’re always looking for projects.

It was a good fit for them and us,” he said, adding that the mill will be donating more wood to the class in

the future.

Students worked in groups of four to create half a dozen benches.

“It was really cool to work on something people will use,” firstyear carpenter Leah Hurley said.

Another of Mahovlic’s Wood Tech classes took on another community project, this one to build a miniature motorcycle rocking toy. Dennis DallaVicenza of the Port Alberni Toy Run found the pattern in a back issue of Canadian Home Workshop magazine and thought it would make an ideal draw prize for the toy run. He liked the idea of kids making a prize for a kid, that would benefit more kids.

Mahovlic said the rocker will be an easy project to repeat.

Facing life’s challenges: final column for Dr. Neill DR. NEILL NEILL Living

s most of you A know I spent the month of March

last year in hospital following a major stroke. I’ve been through crises before, but having a stroke has been life-changing. I still require several hours per week of one kind

of therapy or another, and although I’m definitely improving, my energy level is far short of what it was before the stroke.

Many of you sent messages of support for my recovery and I know many more of you were silently hoping and sometimes praying for my well-being. I am eternally grateful for the support you have given me and continue to give.

Last fall, although barely able to walk, I resumed my counselling psychology practice.

I also resumed writing my practical psychology columns for the Alberni Valley News and the Parksville-Qualicum News.

At the time of the stroke I was beginning to write another book, this one aimed at helping couples survive and

thrive in the midst of the changes that occur to each of us during our lives. My premise is that too many marriages end prematurely when they hit the inevitable speed bumps that come with life.

Unfortunately I’m still only at a beginning stage of the book. Something has to give if I am to get on with writing it.

After 43 columns over four years for

the Alberni Valley News (255 columns for The PQ News), therefore, I am closing the chapter on my column.

I deeply appreciate the wonderful feedback I’ve received from you, my readers, over the years. I have always written with a view to community service, and I would like to express my gratitude to Alberni Valley News editor Susan Quinn for

making my outreach efforts in the Alberni Valley possible.

I expect to continue with my counselling psychology practice for a few more years.

magazine.

Summer Reading Club reaches more than 85,000 B.C. kids every summer and is sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association, with funding assistance from Libraries and Literacy, Ministry of Education.

Lyn Gordon McLeod passed away peacefully in Port Alberni on June 10, 2013. Predeceased by his loving wife Ann Margaret in 1968 and his loving companion of 25 years, Dora Dyer in 1998; his grandson Jerrod T. Strong in 2005 and his parents Gordon Charles and Mardi Ann McLeod.

Survived by his 4 children: John (Rose) Mcleod, Diana (David) Strong, Jody (Robert) Dufour and Gordon (Sharon) McLeod; 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and one sister Amber McLeod.

Lyn moved to Port Alberni in 1971 with his 4 children following the death of his wife Ann. It was here he met Dora Dyer and they spent the next 25 years working, traveling and giving back to the community until Dora’s passing in 1998. Lyn ran his own business for almost 40 years: Western Bus Line & McLeod Transportation.

He had many other ventures along the way. He enjoyed his time at Tall Timbers, The Gyros and meeting regularly with his many friends and family.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, June 21, 2013 at Chapel of Memories Funeral Home, 4005 6th Avenue, Port Alberni, BC. Condolences may be left for the family by visiting www.chapelofmemories.ca.

Not one to idle his time he built his VI Fries trailer from scratch, a project that took two years. “It’s fully inspected for fire/safety and for Foodsafe requirements,� he said.

Plumpton retired from the mine in 2009 and made the

commute back to Alberni one last time, this time with his new van.

Her served food under the banner of Jack’s Shack at the last tall ships festival in 2008 then dropped anchor at Farmer Bill’s on the Pacific Rim Highway for three years.

The business was canvassed by the Port Alberni Port Authority about the possibility of setting up shop at Clutesi

Haven Marina.

The move had several advantages, Plumpton said.

Formerly, the Ogopogo food van occupied the marina site and established its own market.

As well, VI Fries was no longer sandwiched between a gas bar deli and barbecued food business on the Pacific Rim Highway.

At the marina, the closest food business is Solda’s Restaurant,

a short distance down Beaver Creek Road.

The move has already panned out for Plumpton. Business has been steady and he gets a lot of repeat customers from where he was previously established. “When we’re not busy it’s still a great spot because you can watch the water, boats, and people.

The non-stop rain on Tuesday, May 28th forced the postponement of the monthly ladies’ business golf league scramble to the following Tuesday, June 4 at Alberni Golf Club.

Participants were well rewarded by the weather on their new tournament day, however.

The theme for the scramble was “Rock & Roll”, and many people got into the mood and came dressed for the occasion, from poodle (and dachshund!) skirts to Janis Joplin to AC/DC. The scramble winning

Last Tuesday the ladies club at Alberni Golf Club played a nine- and 18-hole mixer.

We played the Fairway game: if your drive ended up on the short cut fairway you would get an F, then 10 points were earned for each F you got. We had to subtract our

putts from that total.

Kathy Toms was closest to the pin (KP) on No. 18. Cass Parker and Kathy Toms won prizes for their scores.

Marj Dufour and Marta Williamson won third place.

Poets launch books Words on Fire’s event on Wednesday, June 26 at Char’s Landing will feature two special guests.

Poet Harvey Jenkins will launch his book of poetry and prose Haiku Moments on the Camino: France to Finisterre, chronicling his 800-kilometre hike across northwestern Spain. David Fraser will launch his second book of poetry, Paper Boats.

This will be the second appearance

for both poets at Char’s Landing on Argyle Street.

Open Mic will start off the evening at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) and the featured readers will follow.

Bring your readings, friends and questions for the Q & A afterwards.

Jenkins is a Vancouver Island writer of haiku, poetry and prose. In the summer of 2010, he walked the Santiago

de Compostela pilgrimage; an 800 km journey across northwestern Spain and has captured that journey in both haiku and prose.

Jenkins is a member of Haiku Canada and a regular contributor to their various reviews and anthologies.

He has received a Sakura Award from the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival in both 2012 and 2011.

Fraser lives in Nanoose Bay.

Dancestreams auditions Dancestreams Youth Dance Company will hold auditions for the coming season on Sunday, June 23 in both Qualicum and Campbell River.

Formed in 1985 to provide enriched training opportunities to serious dance students 13 years and older, Dancestreams is supported and run by

the Vancouver Island Youth Dance Theatre Association.

Murder on Players’ minds Portal Players is gearing up for its next production, opening Sept. 20: the hilarious comedy of errors Let’s Murder Marsha.

Summer’s smiling Rollin Art Centre’s summer children’s art

camps for children aged five to eight years start July 2.

These summer camps run every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and offer a different theme each week. Times are 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for children that are five and six years and 1–3 p.m. for seven- and eight-year-olds.

The cost is $25 for each week. Art camps offer a great time for the children to explore their creative side, make friends, create a take home craft and enjoy a healthy snack, while learning.

Fringe offers new challenge for politician Actors

In this fictional story, FisherBradley wants to show us empowerment and the urge to do something for our planet and, more importantly, for our food.

Fisher-Bradley presents a real-life problem in a different way: seeds are vital for our future economy and survival in our valley and everywhere else in the world.

Connections is a real Fringe Festival play as it combines the unusual, the unconventional, the different with a real message to the world.

Fisher-Bradley says she enjoyed writing her first play; she also painted the big Blue Buddha featured in her piece on a huge canvas, connecting with people.

She found in Emma Robinson, Stephany Grover and John Milne an extraordinary team of actors both new and veterans to help her pass the message.

Fisher-Bradley took such great pleasure writing this play that – maybe – we will be blessed with a sequel, a Connections 2, for the next Fringe Festival.

You can see Connections at the Capitol on Friday, June 21 at 5:45 p.m. and Sunday, June 23 at 3 p.m.

Melanie Anderson is no stranger to the stage in Port Alberni, having appeared or assisted in numerous productions with Portal Players Dramatic Society.

Jen Fisher-Bradley summons her inner painter to create the Blue Buddha for Connections, the play she is debuting at the Fringe Festival.

She brings the one act play Ballerinas back to the stage—this time with a twist.

Elliot Drew, Brent Ronning and Peter Wienold will be the ballerinas in white tutus in this version.

For the Fringe Festival and in her first time directing a play, Anderson wanted to do something different to make her audience

laugh. So, she decided to modify Ballerinas, a play written by Don Nigro—casting three men in the lead.

This was a project she had in mind for more than two years, Anderson said.

Anderson said she enjoyed greatly her first time directing a play with those three seasoned

actors and directors, a play that might be somewhat different from the original but that will no doubt bring a new dimension to what could be a ballerina in a man’s body.

Ballerinas is a black comedy, under 20 minutes, filled with good laughter.

Before the play, the Stages show entitled The Southpaw from Free to Be You & Me will make an awesome opening to this unusual comedy.

Ballerinas plays on Saturday, June 22 at 9 p.m. and Sunday, June 23 at 6 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre.

And there are two separate acts coming from Quadra Island who wanted to go somewhere different.

“We have 100 cast, crew and volunteer passes. That’s a lot,” Hunt said. “That’s how many people are involved in putting this together.”

The festival features 10 local and 10 visiting acts performing from Friday night through Sunday afternoon. There will be a people’s choice awards event at the conclusion of the event on Sunday.

Hunt said Portal Players Dramatic Society stepped up in a big way, from providing a venue to equipment and assistance.

“Otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to afford doing this festival.”
