J. L. Crowe Secondary students completed their final assignments Friday night when they accepted their diplomas in front of family and friends. About 1,000 people watched in the stands of the Cominco gym, where $98,000 in scholarships and burseries were also doled out to 77 of the 156 graduates. “At graduation our emotions and thoughts are in a state of contradiction; we look forward to what’s next, but reminisce on what was,” said Principal David DeRosa. “We yearn for the promise of the unknown but cling to

the comfort of the here and now.” Valedictorian Collin Wynnychuk was pleased to address all of the people who helped mold him throughout, what he called, the most crucial years of his life. He was humbled when he arrived at Crowe and realized that he and his classmates were no longer in charge, a feeling he expects after high school. “Seeing the vitality coursing through the halls was exciting and eased the anxiety of going to a new school,” he recalled from his first experience at the Trail high school. “Even better was that we were granted an actual choice in what we got

to learn.” Graduation comes with even more choice, as some classmates will go onto study post secondary while others will dive right into the workforce. But success will come so long as there is ambition, said guest speaker Don Freschi. He’s not an “old dude” but rather a “seasoned” or “experienced” man, who has been thrown a few curve balls but always found his way. The 1979 Crowe grad remembers his graduation ceremony all too well and opted not to bore the 2013 class with poetry and instead provide clear advice. The Trail entrepreneur recommended the gradu-

ates write a Top 50 goals list immediately and follow this as a guideline. This was an exercise he did after graduating and to his surprise he has completed most of his notes. Armed with a Diploma of Technology from the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Freschi landed a job in Teck’s semiconductor division, which eventually led him to going “all in” on what was formerly known as Firebird Technologies and later became 5N Plus Trail before closing its doors. He is now the general manger of Community Futures’ business incubator, where the former local company began.

The City of Trail has been saving for a rainy day, and this year it’s time to spend some of the nest egg. A memorandum of the city’s 2012 financial audit was reviewed at Monday night council, a, and the report revealed a surplus of cash and a hefty savings account. “We have been building up our capital over the years,” said Mayor Dieter Bogs. “Now we are in a good financial place to be able to start investing in some major improvements, especially in the downtown.” Most notable is the $1.2 million earmarked for the Victoria Street Corridor gateway project, set to begin this summer. “The city is in a healthy position,” said Craig Teindl, City of Trail auditor from L. Soligo & Associates Ltd. “This refers to the fact that as of Dec. 31, 2012, the city had enough cash and investments to pay off all the debt and still have some cash left over.” The annual audit gives an overall picture of how the city is running, looking at it’s consolidated revenue by taking into account its general operations, such as water and sewer operations, and staff and capital funds.

The financial report memorandum, which is available for public viewing at trail.ca, notes a 2012 surplus of almost $2 million. “The city had consolidated revenue in excess of expenses of $1.89 million for the year,” said David Perehudoff, chief administrative officer. “Equating this to the private sector, this would effectively be the equivalent to net profit for the year.” The main influx of cash is collected during property tax collection time. Teindl said that in 2012, the total revenue of the city was almost $20 million, and of that total almost $12.5 million, or 62 per cent came from property taxes. Another eye-catching figure noted in the report is the city’s $10 million in cash and short term investments. “Cash and shortterm investments are liquid assets of the city that may be used to fund operations or capital,” explained Perehudoff.“Strong cash balances allow the city to operate without having to borrow short-term during certain times of the year when cash is not coming in.” More good news noted in the city’s financial statement is its growing accumulated surplus of $85 milllion. Regional

Independent school slated to open in Rossland

Volunteers recognized

By Sheri Regnier Times Staff

As the final graduating class of Rossland Secondary School (RSS) made its exit last week, the Neighbourhoods of Learning (NOL) committee and Red Mountain Academy confirmed its plans to open an independent school in Rossland this fall. “As a community we have adamantly expressed a demand for what the NOL has now produced,” said Mark Impey, chair of the Academy, in a letter circulating to Rossland homes. “Let’s make it happen.” The Red Mountain Academy has committed to enrolling its nine international students, but to move forward, the independent school needs to have a minimum of 33 stu-

dents from grades 8-12 enrolled by June 25. “Rossland can make this happen (now) if the Red Mountain Academy contribution aligns with the expressed community interest,” he said. The independent school would operate with an inquiry-based, personalized learning approach with teachers “on the ground” to work with students, said NOL committee chair Aerin Guy, to the Rossland News. “Such a school would offer a full-course program available to all learners, not just Rossland or Academy students, including a graduation program. “There will be sports teams associated with the school, if the numbers permit it, as well as all of the other things people expect from a high school.”

After investigating an alternative to sending grades 10-12 students down the hill to Trail’s J.L. Crowe Secondary School, NOL secured partial government funding for its independent school. There is an extra tuition of $1,000 per year to attend the school, although the fee will be waived to students with financial need. “In subsequent years as our school grows, the cost for local students may lessen,” said Guy. “We’re looking to the community for an expression of interest, because we are moving ahead even if there are only eight kids.” For those considering registering email info@redskiacademy. com for an application before Wednesday.

Community Charter requires city to complete annual report From page 1 “Accumulated surplus is basically the net value of the city that has been built up over time,” explained Perehudoff. He said it is not specific to one year, but accumulated since the city has been in operation, and in relation to the private sector, equivalent to retained earnings.

In 2011, the city was sitting pretty with a $1.5 million surplus, with consolidated revenues of just over $19 million, and tangible capital assets of $82.5 million. The Community Charter requires that before June 30 each year, council must prepare an annual report and make it available for public inspection.

The local aviation community is in shock after one the region’s most experienced pilots died in a crash last Wednesday. Anthony (Tony) Quibell, 53, died when his Cessna Skymaster 337 airplane crashed near Crawford Bay. Quibell was the lone occupant in the plane that took off from the Nelson Airport at 1:30 p.m. on June 12 intending to fly to La Ronge, Saskatchewan. His six-hour flight was cut tragically short when his plane crashed in “high-treed terrain.” Quibell died at the scene. “It was a real shock, he’s a very gifted and experienced pilot,” said Case Grypma, a longtime Nelson

Pilots’ Association member and past president of the local association. “As a group, we really offer our condolences to the family and our support. Tony was a really big part of the airport and he will be really missed as a pilot, a friend and an aircraft engineer.” Quibell operated an aircraft repair business and contracted to the Ministry of Forests for forest fire spotting duty. “He was one of the pilots right on the frontline of protection here, he is really going to be missed,” said Grypma. Quibell’s plane was reported missing on Wednesday evening when it failed to arrive at its destination.

Montreal’s interim mayor faces fraud charges Self-styled corruption fighter picked up for bribery THE CANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL - The Montreal replacement mayor who recently took office amid a corruption scandal, and who promised to restore public trust, has now been arrested in a bribery case. Mayor Michael Applebaum was picked up at his home Monday by Quebec’s anti-corruption unit as part of a broader investigation into construction deals involving Mafia-linked figures and involving a public official who recently committed suicide. Applebaum faces 14 charges including fraud, conspiracy, breach of trust, and corruption in municipal affairs, prompting widespread demands for his resignation. Just seven months ago Applebaum rose to his role by promising to lead Montreal out of its era of sleaze. In a skilful bit of political manoeuvring last fall, he courted

NEW

support from different parties and was elected by council on an interim basis to replace Gerald Tremblay. Applebaum had pledged not to run in the upcoming election, slated for November, but his interim appointment was enough to make history: he became the first Anglophone mayor of the city in exactly 100 years. Signs of trouble surfaced soon afterward. Anti-corruption officials raided Montreal’s city hall in February. They also targeted offices in various boroughs, including the one Applebaum represented for many years. “We can no longer tolerate these reprehensible acts committed towards the management of our public institutions,” said Robert Lafreniere, head of the provincial police anti-corruption squad, at a Monday news conference. “No one is above the law - and you can’t hide from the law.” Also arrested Monday was a former employee of the Harper government.

Saulie Zajdel was a Conservative election candidate in 2011. After narrowly losing in his bid to give Montreal its first Tory seat in a quarter-century, Zajdel was subsequently hired by a minister’s office to work on ethnic outreach. Zajdel now faces five charges including bribery, breach of trust, fraud and corruption. He had been nicknamed the “Shadow” MP as the Tories hoped to gain a foothold in Montreal in the riding of Liberal Irwin Cotler. The arrests quickly made headlines around the world. There was a particularly humorous reaction in some media in the U.S., where news of the Toronto mayor’s ongoing political troubles is well known. The Atlantic magazine ran a story on its website titled: “What the Heck Is the Matter with the Mayors of Canada?” The article began: “So a Canadian mayor was arrested Monday and, no, it was not the one you expect.” It was a similar response on the Gawker website: “A major Canadian city woke up to find out

On a related note, police confirmed Monday that a recent suicide at the borough offices was part of the broader city-hall investigation. Lafreniere was asked whether Robert Rousseau, a permits-andinspections official at the Cotedes-Neiges-NDG borough who killed himself in March, was part of the case, and he said yes. At the time of Rousseau’s death, the French CBC reported that he had been interrogated by police the previous day about the same condo project that his colleague admitted to having discussed with Nick Rizzuto Jr. Before Rizzuto was gunned down in late 2009, he worked in construction. Ford has said publicly that he does not use crack cocaine and that the alleged video does not exist. The Montreal charges stem from alleged acts that occurred between 2006 and 2011, before Applebaum became mayor. While officials offered few details, they said they relate to real-estate projects in the westend borough Applebaum led. Police said they suspect bribes were paid to influence zoning and permit decisions. They said the transactions were worth “tens of thousands of dollars.” They would not say what figures were suspected of doing the bribing. THE CANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER - The trial of a Mountie accused of lying to the public inquiry into Robert Dziekanski’s death has watched the notorious video that shows the Polish man stunned repeatedly by an RCMP Taser. Const. Bill Bentley is accused of lying six times to the public inquiry in 2009, and his trial has now started after a week of pre-trial motions. The amateur video of a confrontation was played at the trial that shows four RCMP officers arrive at Vancouver’s airport, and, within seconds, stun Dziekanski with a

Taser. Bentley wrote in his notes and told homicide investigators that Dziekanski screamed and came at the officers before the Taser was used and that two officers physically brought Dziekanski to the ground. But the video contradicted Bentley’s claims, and he is now accused of lying when he attempted to explain those discrepancies at the inquiry. During the inquiry, Bentley said the note about Dziekanski screaming was accurate because Dziekanski did start screaming once he was stunned.

THOMAS PENFIELD JACKSON

Judge ruled on Microsoft monoly THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON - Thomas Penfield Jackson, who as a federal judge in Washington presided over a Microsoft antitrust case and the drug possession trial of former Mayor Marion Barry, has died. Jackson died at his home in Compton, Md., his wife Patricia told The Associated Press on Sunday. He was 76 and had cancer. Jackson, who retired from the bench in 2004, handled a variety of cases in more than two decades as judge. He sent Barry to prison for cocaine possession, presided over the perjury trial of former White House aide Michael Deaver, and ordered then-Sen. Bob Packwood to turn over his diaries to a committee investigating sexual harassment charges. In 2000, ruling in a historic antitrust lawsuit brought by the government against Microsoft, Jackson ordered the software giant to be split in two after concluding the company had stifled competition and used illegal methods to protect its monopoly in computer operating systems. The decision rocked the software industry, and in interviews with the news media that were published after the ruling, Jackson was quoted as comparing Microsoft founder Bill Gates

to Napoleon and likening the company to a drug-dealing street gang. “I think he has a Napoleonic concept of himself and his company, an arrogance that derives from power and unalloyed success, with no leavening hard experience, no reverses,” Jackson said in one interview. An appeals court the following year unanimously reversed the breakup order though it did agree that Microsoft had acted as an illegal software monopoly - saying Jackson had engaged in “serious judicial misconduct” with his derogatory out-of-court comments about the company. The court appointed a different judge to determine a new punishment. The company later negotiated a settlement. Another high-profile case involved a North Carolina tobacco farmer who in 2003 drove his tractor into a pond on the National Mall and told police he was carrying “organophosphate bombs.” Jackson initially sentenced Dwight Watson to six years in prison, saying the city had regarded him as a “one-man weapon of mass destruction,” but later sharply reduced the punishment following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

BERNARD SAHLINS

Curtain falls on Second City founder

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO - Bernard “Bernie” Sahlins, who co-founded Chicago’s Second City theatre and who nurtured the early careers of many of the earliest stars of “Saturday Night Live,” died Sunday. He was 90. Andrew Alexander, one of Second City’s current owners and its CEO, told The Associated Press that Sahlins died peacefully at his Chicago home with his family nearby. He is survived by his wife, Jane Nicholl Sahlins. Sahlins and business partners Howard Alk and Paul Sills opened The Second City in December 1959, and it quickly gained national attention and helped establish Chicago as a vibrant comedy town, the Chicago Sun-Times reported (http://bit. ly/1bLDRZo ). The Second City wasn’t Sahlins’ first attempt at running a theatre. He was a producer-investor in a theatre troupe in the early 1950s that was comprised of many fellow University of Chicago graduates, and he and several business partners produced plays at the Studebaker Theater from October 1956 until the following year, when it had to close due to a lack of funding. In his 2002 memoir, “Days and Nights at the Second City,” Sahlins wrote that he, Alk and Sills hadn’t set out to build another theatre. “We had been burned enough times doing that. This was still the Beat generation, and we started out to found a coffee house where we idlers, including the actors whom

we had with for years, could loll around and put the world in its proper place.” But The Second City caught on within months of opening, despite some early money problems and other issues, and it became instrumental in the growth and development of improvisational and sketch comedy. Sahlins had an eye for talent, and he hired and nurtured the early careers of such future stars as John and Jim Belushi, Joan Rivers, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner and Harold Ramis, among others. Shortly after “Saturday Night Live” began airing in the fall of 1975, Second City became a breeding ground for the show. According to Second City producer emeritus Joyce Sloane, who died in 2011, Sahlins once half-jokingly commanded her to lock “SNL” creator and producer Lorne Michaels out of the building, the Sun-Times reported. Alexander, who along with business partner Len Stuart bought The Second City from Sahlins in 1985, according to the theatre’swebsite, told the AP that Sahlins will be remembered for always urging performers to work at the top of their intellect, and that this is still preached at the theatre today. “You think about that theatre, and think of all the stars that came out of it ... from Belushi to Aykroyd to Allan Arkin. It’s extraordinary, the amount of talented people that came out of it,” Alexander said.

What ails the NDP? Plenty

N

DP MLAs were sworn in to continue a stretch of opposition that will reach at least 16 years, leader Adrian Dix took a few questions about his future. The party’s provincial council will meet June 21 to set the terms of reference for a review of the party’s dismal election performance, Dix told reporters. He repeated that his performance won’t be spared, and ticked off some conventional wisdom about the NDP campaign. Dix mentioned the alleged lack of “negative” ads, the local campaigns (read candidates), the decreasing reliability of polls and, when pressed, his surprise decision to come out against the proposed twinning of the TransMountain oil pipeline. Like last week’s hysteria over a tiny leak in that pipeline, these are great sound bites for the short attention spans of the

modern media. But they don’t explain much. This all-powerful NDP provincial council is a case in point. A glimpse into its inner workings was provided by a summary of an NDP policy development workshop called “Imagine Our Future” that was leaked by the B.C. Liberals in the final days of the campaign. The workshop took place in November 2010, coincidentally at the same provincial council meeting where the revolt against former leader Carole James tumbled into the open. While 13 caucus members were knifing their leader for reasons they still can’t or won’t articulate in public – a glaring problem in itself – the backroom policy brainstorm revealed a deeper malaise. Among the “dream tree” notions put forward in the workshop was “free” post-secondary tuition and public transit, along with raising wages and lowering fees for daycare. This isn’t a dream tree, it’s a money

tree. Remember, this is the NDP’s ruling body, not a high school “social justice” class or an Occupy Vancouver squat.

TOM

FLETCHER B.C. Views

Showing a glimmer of adult supervision, the workshop table on “equitable tax policy” even identified the problem. Its first recommendation: “Increase our economic and financial literacy to gain credibility.” The “public ownership” table really got radical. Scrap public-private partnerships, the basis of most government construction today.

“Nationalize” independent power projects, in the Venezuelan style of state seizure of private assets. And perhaps most incredibly, tear up the trade agreement between Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C. that harmonizes transport truck regulations and so forth. In the real world, the four western premiers met this week in Winnipeg. And the three-province project now called “New West Partnership” will continue to dismantle archaic interprovincial barriers. Why would the NDP be secretly against that? Because it’s also a “labour mobility” agreement. This harkens back to a supposed golden age in Canada, when two corporate titans shared the beer business, producing identical bland lager from identical factories in identical stubby bottles. Inter-provincial trade in these stubbies was strictly forbidden, requiring each province to have a big unionized brewery to make

uniformly bad beer for the proletariat. This is the power of a monopoly union. And because of it, this was how governments tried to “create jobs.” It’s a bygone era to which many core NDP supporters stubbornly cling. This explains the party’s revival of a “job protection commissioner” for forestry. Which brings us to the proverbial root cause of the B.C. NDP’s woes. Its largest financial donor is the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union, which donated $1.4 million to the party in the past eight years, nosing out the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Hospital Employees’ Union. Former HEU and BCGEU presidents now sit in the NDP caucus, critics for health and “green” jobs respectively. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

funny or die

Chappelle goes on tour THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Dave Chappelle is making his most substantial return to stand-up comedy with a one-month tour for Funny Or Die. The comedian will headline the Oddball Comedy and Curiosity Festival, which kicks off Aug. 23 in Austin, Texas. The 39-year-old Chappelle has occasionally performed impromptu sets in comedy clubs. But he has largely avoided comedy and public life since abruptly leaving his hit Comedy Central series, “Chappelle’s Show,” in 2005.

CROWN POINT HOTEL

Letters to the editor

Katrine Conroy commits to serving Kootenay West This week I travelled to Victoria to be sworn in as MLA and I wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to the people of Kootenay West for my re-election. I am honored and I will do my very best to represent all constituents and take the concerns of this area to Victoria and the legislature. I will be an active member of the Official Opposition Caucus and in that role I have a duty to question government and to make sure that my constituent’s views are heard. I take this responsibility seriously and will continue to do so. My new critic position within the opposition caucus will be seniors and seniors Health and I’m also the critic responsible for the Columbia River Treaty, Columbia Power and Columbia Basin Trust. We will be returning to the Legislature on June 26th and one of the main pieces of legislative business we will be dealing with is the passing of a budget

for the province. When we last sat in Victoria in February, the Liberal Government introduced a budget that they claimed was balanced. The Opposition Caucus has grave concerns on the legitimacy of this claim. As we see it, the only way the budget can be balanced is to use the deferral accounts from BC Hydro, sell large numbers of government assets and bring in significant reductions in government services. Any government service reductions hit rural BC particularly hard. As we know in the Kootenays, we have very little left to cut. Funding for health, education, and transportation have all been dramatically reduced and we have already endured many cut backs in this area. Our social safety net has been reduced and many are falling through the cracks now. As we start a new four-year term, I am committed to trying to protect our region from further cuts, advocating for more

funding for local school districts, Selkirk College, healthcare, local transportation, seniors care, local parks and environment. I will also be very involved with gathering information and attending meetings regarding the Columbia River Treaty. As always, you can reach me and my staff through my constituency office in Castlegar. Even while I am away in Victoria, I have two staff member who are there to assist with questions or government programs. You can also coordinate through my Castlegar office for setting up meetings or invitations to events. I will continue to be accessible to constituents through a variety of ways, including my toll-free phone number, email, a website, Facebook and twitter accounts. I look forward to working with the residents of Kootenay West over the next four years. Katrine Conroy, MLA Kootenay West

Ready for right-to-die debate An editorial from the Hamilton Spectator The federal government needs to stop running away from the debate over euthanasia. The Harper government, and its predecessors, to be fair, have refused at every turn to even entertain discussion on the subject. They have fought every opportunity to make even modest changes in law that would give citizens more latitude in deciding their own fate in terminal situations, or would offer some degree of legal protection to medical professionals who assist with suicide. Another window of opportunity is opening with news that the Quebec government might become the first province in Canada, and one of the few jurisdictions in the

world, to permit terminally ill patients to end their suffering on their own terms. The proposed legislation is very narrow indeed. It would allow doctors to administer lethal drugs to patients whose lives are nearing the end and who are in excruciating pain that cannot be relieved by medication or any other means. The bill deals broadly with end-of-life issues, and would standardize palliative care services across the province, and would bring formal rules governing how and when doctors are allowed to sedate patients until they die of natural causes. The government of our neighbouring province deserves credit for tackling an issue that others seem intent to avoid. We know all the reasons for that. Religion.

Fear of reopening the abortion debate. Societal discomfort. Fear of abuse and commercialization. Political correctness. But all of this amounts to avoidance. Given the rapidly aging, multitudinous wave of baby boomers entering this territory, we’re going to have to stop hiding soon. We’re living longer. Yes, thanks to medical advances we’re more active than previous generations, but we also live with more chronic health conditions that can contribute to quality of life deterioration. Dementia in all its insidious forms - the subject of an upcoming Spectator special report - is growing and will change the healthcare landscape. We already intervene in various ways to change end-of-life

situations. What is a do-not-resuscitate order if not a form of assisting death? We acknowledge patients and families have the right of self-determination to the extent a DNR order allows, but we wouldn’t allow a patient facing death by Lou Gehrig’s disease the right to exit before the final, awful hours arrive. A patient with terminal cancer, for which pain control is ultimately failing, doesn’t have the right to decide his or her fate. Why shouldn’t a person facing certain death by disease be able to draft a living will, with all appropriate safeguards in place, stating they want to be allowed to die by assisted suicide at some point before their situation becomes too terrible to contemplate?

with poor eating behaviours had higher blood-cholesterol readings than children who had healthier eating habits. “It shows that we should pay attention to how children eat, not just what they eat,” said Dr. Nav Persaud, a family physician and researcher at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, who led the study. The study, published Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, involved 1,076 preschoolers enrolled in the TARGet Kids! practice-based research network in Toronto. Researchers looked at the link between eating habits and blood-serum levels of so-called “bad” cholesterol. Researchers found that “the less healthy the eating behaviours, the higher the cholesterol level,” said Persaud. Those behaviours include eating while watching TV and snacking on fluids like juice.

Orioles earn split with Honkers

O’s late rally generates win BY JIM BAILEY

Times Sports Editor

The Trail AM Ford Orioles’ Dallas Calvin clobbered a threerun home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, then closed the game to propel the O’s to a 10-8 victory over the Northwest Honkers in the final match of the four-game weekend series at Butler Park on Sunday. The win ensured a split for the home side, a positive result considering the Orioles mustered an unlikely comeback after being down 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning of the final match. “Against a good team like that, you always want to win every game, but a split we’re happy with that,” said Orioles’ player/ coach Jim Maniago. The Honkers got to O’s starter Scott Rhynold early plating one in the first and three in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Yet, Kellen Jones and Kyle Mace came on in relief in the middle innings keeping the Honkers off the board until the Oriole bats came alive in the seventh. Trail first baseman James Oliver came into the game to start the inning and after making a nice grab on a drilled ball down the line, he started the offence rolling with a lead off single up the middle. A pair of errors to the Honkers’ second baseman loaded the bases, and Jeff Sidey came up and slapped a single to right to get the Orioles on the board. Joey Underwood then ripped a double to centre to score two more and make it 4-3 before Calvin singled home both Underwood and Sidey to give the Orioles a shortlived 5-4 lead. The Honkers would not go quietly as right fielder Dalton Gervais drove a pitch over the centre-field fence to even the score at 5-5. The O’s would regain the lead, however. After Kyle

Paulson led off with a walk, Maniago executed perfectly advancing Paulson to second on a bunt. Jaret Conway singled to left to put runners on the corners. Sidey would score Paulson on a single to right, and with men on first and second, Underwood drove a ball deep to centre, doubling off the wall to score Conway, and give Trail a 7-5 edge. “It was a pretty good effort from everybody,” said Maniago. “Today we subbed some guys in and the game turned around. Everybody seemed to contribute, it was great.” Calvin then seemed to put the game to bed when he stepped up and belted the first pitch over the rightcentre field wall to take a 10-5 lead. “I was sitting back on a curve ball, that’s what I thought I was going to get,” said Calvin. “It was a leftylefty match up and that’s what he threw me so I got lucky.” Yet the Honkers would not go quietly. With Calvin pitching in his third consecutive game, the Seattle squad scored three quick runs to cut the lead to 10-8. A single up the middle from Honker centre-fielder Gabriel Rochon would bring the tying run, Gervais, to the plate. Gervais had evened the score in the eighth on a solo home run off of Calvin, but this time it was the Orioles’ pitcher that bore down and struck the Honker out on a 2-and-2 pitch for the victory. “I actually pitched last night and this morning, so it was the third game I pitched this weekend. I was getting tired but I knew we had a five-run lead so if I could hold them to a few, I knew it would be all good,” said Calvin. It was a great effort from a team that had played close to seven hours of baseball that day. Clutch plays from Oliver at first base, and Sidey on an acrobatic catch in deep centre in the eighth; gutsy pitching from

Some great defensive play, like the one below by Joey Underwood, combined with hustle from Kyle Paulson, above, some explosive bats, and a good team effort lifted the Trail AM Ford Orioles to a come-from-behind 10-8 victory over the Northwest Honkers on Sunday at Butler Park. The O’s and Honkers split the four-game series and will meet again this weekend in Seattle. the weary arms of Rhynold, Jones, Mace, and Calvin, and a bevy of brilliant plays by shortstop Underwood in the late going sustained the lead, and

topped off an exciting weekend of PIL action. Underwood, who plays baseball for Bryan College in Tennessee, drove in three runs going 2-for-5 with two

doubles, to go along with several key plays at short. “It feels great to comeback against a team like this,” said Underwood, a Fruitvale native. “When we are looking for wins to stay in this league, these are big wins, very big wins.” The Honkers won the first game of the series 11-0, in a game that was scoreless until the sixth inning. The Orioles’ Paulson was tossing a one-hitter until the wheels fell off and the Honkers put up seven in the sixth. But the Orioles replied, taking the second match 9-7 in a game that lasted two days because of an unexpected shower Saturday night. See CONSISTENCY, Page 12

JUNIOR GOLF

Cream of crop stays at top

BY TIMES CONTRIBUTOR The West Kootenay Zone 1 Junior Golf season came to a fitting conclusion Sunday at the Balfour Golf Course. The season ended the same way it started with Birchbank’s Tyler McKay taking home medalist honours and securing his position as Zone 1 Junior Player of the Year. Tyler opened the day with a first round 2-under par score of 70, three shots better than Braden McKay’s 73 and nine better than Brenan Moroney. Only Moroney and Braden had a mathematical chance to catch Tyler for Player of The Year, but Tyler played his afternoon round in 1-over par to finish the tournament at 1-under, three shots better than Braden. Moroney finished third in the tour championship and secured top spot for the season in the 17 and 18 year division. Braden McKay was top player in the 15 and 16 year division and Aiden Browell took home the trophy for the 14 and under division. Carson Arcuri from Granite Point was awarded the prestigious Emily Beauchamp Award given to the player who best demonstrates ability, sportsmanship, dedication and improvement. A number of local juniors will be continuing their competitive schedules very soon. Tyler and Braden McKay will attempt to qualify for the US Junior championship next week. David Launier, Brenan, Tyler, Braden, Carson and Isaac Janzen will all be playing the BC Junior. Jeff Ashton and Jake Kolodychuk will be playing in the BC Juvenile.

Two tough losses for ‘A’ Philllies

BY TIMES STAFF The West Kootenay Single-A Phillies dropped a pair of close games to East Valley on Friday. The home Spokane team led 6-5 heading into the sixth inning of the opening game of the double bill, and scored three more to take a 9-5 lead. But the Phillies rallied in the seventh, as Brenan Makay singled and would eventually score to cut the lead to 9-6. With two men on and the tying run at the plate, a deep fly ball to centre field would be caught to end the rally. Derek

Green went 3-for-4 at the plate including a double for the Phillies. Matt Snary went 2-for-4 for the Phillies, while Colton Miracle threw five strong innings giving up three runs on three hits, while striking out eight. The Phillies next games go Saturday at Butler Park with a doubleheader against Universtiy A2, at 1 and 3 p.m.

Spurs on verge of fifth NBA title THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MIAMI - The Miami Heat weren’t supposed to be in this situation. Not now, anyway. Coming home from Texas with their season on the line in 2011 was one thing. They were at the end of their first year together - LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh still trying to figure it all out and clearly a long way from it. But this season, they were the NBA’s best team, one that lost three games in three months and made losing three times in one series look unlikely, if not downright unimaginable. The San Antonio Spurs can finish Miami off tonight in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, reaffirming themselves as one of the league’s greatest franchises. If so, the Heat’s Big Three once again go from celebrated to devastated. “We’re going to see if we’re a better team than we were our first year together,” James said. The Spurs took a 3-2 lead with their 114-104 victory Sunday night. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili were all brilliant again, and Danny Green added to what could become one of the most out-of-nowhere finals MVP campaigns ever. One more victory makes the Spurs 5-0 in the NBA Finals, keeping pace with Michael Jordan’s 6-0 Chicago Bulls as the only teams to make it here multiple times and never lose. The Heat also host Game 7 on Thursday. They’re trying to join the 1988 and 2010 Los Angeles Lakers and 1994 Houston Rockets as the only teams to rally from 3-2 down by winning the final two on their home floor.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES “Man of Steel” leaped over box office expectations in a single weekend. The Warner Bros. superhero film earned $113 million in its opening weekend at the box office, according to studio estimates Sunday. The retelling of Superman’s backstory earned an additional $12 million from Thursday screenings, bringing its domestic total to $125 million. Original boxoffice expectations for “Man of Steel” ranged from $75 million to $130 million. “They finally got the Superman formula right,” said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood. com. “Superhero movies really are the bread and butter of the summer box office. just proves that.” “Man of Steel,” which stars Henry Cavill as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane, also nabbed the record for June’s biggest opening away from “Toy Story 3,” the Disney-Pixar film which banked $110.3 million when it opened in 2010. “Superman Returns,” the previous Superman film starring Brandon Routh in the titular role, launched with $52.5 million in 2006. The new take on Superman’s origin also performed solidly overseas, earning $71.6 million from 24 territories, including the Philippines, India, Malaysia and the United Kingdom, where “Man of Steel” earned $17.1 million. The film, which also stars Russell Crowe and Michael Shannon, is set to open next weekend in 27 more territories, such as Russia and China. “We knew we were going to have competition, but we felt our movie stood on its own and had its own voice,” said Rory Bruer, Sony’s president of worldwide distribution. Neil Patrick MONday & Movies Harris to return to Broadway MONDAY EVENING

# $ % & _ ( + , ` .

Set to sing in ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ By Mark Kennedy THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK Neil Patrick Harris is returning to the stage - and not to hand out awards. The four-time Tony Award host and former “Doogie Howser, M.D.” will star on Broadway in the spring as the gender-bent rock chanteuse at the centre of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” the cult musical that was made into a cult movie. Written by John Cameron Mitchell and composer Stephen Trask, “Hedwig” was an unlikely hit fashioned out of a strange story: a tale of obsession, glam rock, a botched sex-change operation and a quest for identity.

Mitchell starred in an off-Broadway production that played for two years starting in 1998 in the dilapidated ballroom of an ancient Greenwich Village hotel and reprised the role in a 2001 film version. In a statement, Mitchell said: “Who better to pass the wig to but the finest entertainer of his generation?” Harris, the 40-year-old “How I Met Your Mother” star, has been featured in three Broadway productions, including “Assassins,” ”Proof“ and as the exuberant master of ceremonies in ”Cabaret.“ In a statement, Harris said: “I am simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to be stepping into Hedwig’s heels. It is truly a once-ina-lifetime role and I can’t wait to begin the journey.”

that PTSD is a real illness with real treatment options. It is also important to know that this doesn’t only affect members of the military. Anyone who experiences a traumatic event can develop PTSD. It wasn’t easy, but I eventually got the help I needed and am in a much better place. June 20 is PTSD Screening Day, and June is PTSD Awareness Month. Anyone can go online and take a free and anonymous screening at www. PTSDScreening.org to see whether their symptoms are consistent with those of PTSD. It can be hard

daughter addresses an envelope to her this way. -- Wondering in Clinton Township Dear Wondering: Your sister should be amazed to receive a handwritten envelope from her niece altogether. It’s fairly rare these days. It’s perfectly OK for a young niece to write “Aunt Frances” on an envelope. Many aunts would be charmed. However, one rule of etiquette is not to intentionally offend. Since you know your sister wants a more formal address, teach your daughter to write to her this way, and please don’t editorialize when you do so. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Wish He’d Look for Another Job,” who is frustrated by a young co-worker. “Justin” can’t remember what was said the minute he hangs up the telephone, doesn’t pay attention to what he is doing, takes on no new responsibilities, makes the same

mistakes over and over, texts his wife constantly and falls apart over every issue. I would like to mention another possibility. I know a young man who needs constant teaching, doesn’t want to try new things, forgets almost instant-

ly what he has been taught and rarely offers to do anything. He has a processing disorder. He is a loving 30-yearold, but I don’t think he will ever hold a job unless special considerations are made for him. I hope that if he does get a job, it is with

folks who are tolerant of his learning disability, although they may not know he has special needs. -- A Reader Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.

You are correct that anyone who has witnessed or experienced trauma can suffer from PTSD. This includes anyone affected by recent tragedies such as Sandy Hook, the Boston Marathon and the tornadoes in Oklahoma. The first step to getting help is identifying the problem. We urge those who think their experience with trauma is impacting them to go to www. PTSDscreening.org and take a short, free, anonymous screening. You won’t be sorry. Dear Annie: As a military war veteran and someone raised in the midst of inner-city violence, I have suffered from and learned a great deal about posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There are many misconceptions about this common and treatable illness, and I want to make sure your readers know the truth about PTSD and how to get help if they need it. When I got out of the service, I could only sit in certain positions in a room and go to certain places. I couldn’t be in crowds or tolerate any kind of loud traffic noise (not easy for a New Yorker). I couldn’t sit next to a window. If anyone came up behind me to say hello, I would drop them to the ground, expecting an attack. I didn’t recognize this at the time as PTSD. I know there are many others with stories like mine, and I want them to know
