Reckless driver nabbed Seeking witnesses On June 12, 2013, just accident.

before 9:00 am a plain clothes police officer came across a single vehicle crash on Hwy 95A between Kimberley and Marysville. Witnesses observed a male flee the scene and head for the bush near Forest Crown. The officer requested the assistance of a police dog.

The police dog and his handler obtained a track and after almost 2 hours successfully located and arrested a 24 year old male. He was identified as the driver and has been charged with a number of offences under the Motor Vehicle Act, including Drive without Due Care and Attention, No Driver’s License and Fail to Remain at the scene of an Rocky Mountain

Witnesses claim the driver attempted to pass several vehicles on a curve departing Kimberley, when a vehicle approached in the opposing lane; he pulled in, but lost control. The vehicle went off road right, clipped and broke a utility pole and then overturned.

There was also a passenger in the vehicle; fortunately neither of the subjects were injured.

The highway was closed initially while police searched for the subject, later it was opened to single lane alternating while BC Hydro repaired the damaged equipment.

Police are seeking witnesses to a crash that occurred on June 9, 2013 at approximately 5:30 pm on highway 93/95 near Skookumchuck.

Police are specifically looking for persons who may have observed the driving behavior of either vehicle prior to the crash. The north bound vehicle is 2002 Grey Ford Escape, with an Alberta License plate with a female driver.

The south bound vehicle is a 2008 red Toyota Corolla with two female occupants.

Help stop a game disease at the border The Province is launching a public awareness campaign to help prevent a disease that is killing deer, elk and moose in some areas of Alberta and Saskatchewan, from crossing the border into British Columbia.

To support the cam-

paign, the Province has set up signs on Highway 49 near Dawson Creek and on Highway 3 near Sparwood, reminding hunters not to bring intact deer carcasses into B.C. The signs were developed with the support of the Peace River

The disease was first identified in Canada in 1996, and despite attempts to manage it, CWD continues to spread in Saskatchewan and Alberta. The Province has been work-

Teck’s Coal Mountain wins award Submitted It’s a dynamic competition with a vitally important purpose and at this year’s event three teams emerged victorious at the 58th annual Mine Rescue and First Aid Competition in Revelstoke.

Spectators from around the province gathered in Revelstoke recently to watch nine mine rescue and eight first aid teams put their skills to the test. The competition is divided into three categories: Surface, Underground and Three Person First Aid, and features lifelike simulations that test skills in firefighting, first aid, rope rescue, extrication, and general mine rescue knowledge.

This year the Province added a new exhibition event to the competition. The Mutual Aid Scramble mixed the teams in a trial designed to test teamwork and cooperation. The ability to adapt to working together is important if mining emergency responders are called to provide a multiple-resource rescue effort. The winning team “Blue” consisted of representatives from Peace River Coal, Quinsam Coal, Nyrstar, Coal Mountain, Wolverine and Gibraltar.

Health Organization (WHO) does not believe that CWD can be passed from deer to humans.

As a precaution, WHO warns people not to eat the meat from infected deer.

Agreement helps to cement Ktunaxa Nation economic development Submitted A recent agreement between the B.C. government and the Ktunaxa Nation Council will support economic development and job creation in the West Kootenay region and provide benefits to the Ktunaxa Nation in advance of a treaty.

“This agreement will bring significant benefits to the Ktunaxa communities and enable them to benefit from business partnerships and land development opportunities within their traditional territory. The Ktunaxa Nation has demonstrated its commitment to pursuing partnerships with local businesses which will benefit local

businesses and families, and this agreement opens the door for further opportunities,” said Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister Ida Chong.

Under the Incremental Treaty Agreement (ITA), the Ktunaxa will receive approximately 242 hectares of Crown land. The transfer of the land, located outside the Village of Nakusp in the Wensley Bench area, will create new opportunities for local businesses interested in partnering with the Ktunaxa to develop the lands and expand their businesses.

This agreement and the business partnerships it will foster, will provide economic benefits and

employment opportunities to the local community.

“This parcel represents a sound business opportunity, which can be managed with social, cultural and environmental standards that are consistent with Ktunaxa stewardship principles. We look forward to developing a strong working relationship with other governments and business partners, to provide a positive economic impact throughout the Ktunaxa Traditional Territory,” said Ktunaxa Nation Chair Kathryn Teneese.

The early transfer of lands under ITAs supports the treaty negotiation process in British

Columbia by demonstrating the significant benefits that treaties can bring to First Nations and to businesses and local communities.

This agreement, which builds upon the existing Strategic Engagement, and Economic and Community Development agreements, is another example of B.C.’s commitment to

further its relationship with the Ktunaxa Nation.

4-H — nearly 100 years in the making “The object (of these competitions) is to train the heads and hands of the boys and girls; to

give them broad and big hearts; to improve their health by giving them an interest in outdoor

life; and to encourage on the part of all British Columbia citizens, a stronger and more intelligent interest in agriculture.”

Such was the goal of the 4-H movement when it started in 1914 in British Columbia.

During this first year, over 200 young people between the ages of 10 and 18 were involved in competitions sponsored by the Department of Agriculture. Originally the program focused on potatoes as a project but was expanded later that year to include poultry in order to interest more youth and to widen the influence of progressive farming practices on the BC farming community.

Clubs were originally known as Boys and Girls clubs until they were renamed 4-H clubs in 1952 to more clearly represent the four H’s head, heart, hands and health. Swine, beef, dairy, corn, potato and poultry projects were popular in the early years, with the Department of Agriculture being instrumental in providing project training, instruction in judging and, support.

Richard Wagamese blessed Mount Baker Secondary School with his presence on May 29th 2013. During the morning blocks Richard did two presentations directed towards English students at Key City Theatre about why he writes and the genuine love for words he has. In the afternoon, for a mere 25 students, he presented a writing workshop teaching how to write effectively and freely. He provided the students with a glance into his life, how his books came to be, and also inspired many to write from their heart just like he does. Mr. Wagamese is a well known First Nation’s author across Canada, and he provided all the students who watched his presentations with an experience they would never forget.

On Thursday, 14 teams of enthusiastic Graduates embarked upon the community as participants of the MBSS’s 6th annual Amazing Race. Our community graciously allowed our teams to enter their businesses to solve one of fifteen challenging clues enroute to the final mat at the foot of the Bear on the school grounds. Mount Baker’s Band Concert

Mount Baker had another outstanding band concert on June 3rd, 2013!

The Jazz Band kicked off the night followed by the Vocal Jazz ensemble group and then the Concert Choir. Following that was the annual Grad Showcase, which demonstrated amazing talent and support among the Grads and their peers. To finish the night off, the Concert Band collaborated with the Vocal Jazz and Concert Choir performing “Skyfall”, which was the nominated song of the year. The evening was great, full of wonderful music, talented individuals and fun had by all!
