THE GAME

Final Round 20 local University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) students are competing for fortune, fame and bragging rights with the return of the biggest reality contest from The Abbotsford News.

One student will win the grand prize of $5,000 cash, the title of Freshman (formerly the Intern) of the Year and a summer internship with the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) marketing department.

THE CHALLENGE: Twenty UFV students are divided into 10 teams. Each team is associated with a corporate partner in the community. Their challenge was to create a marketing plan, video and a full-page advertisement for their sponsor business. All of the team projects can be viewed online at abbynews.com/contests. Teams have also been paired with a local charity and will do their best to raise exposure — making a positive change in our community.

THE ELIMINATION: Readers will have the opportunity to fire teams daily based on a list of questions and answers completed by the competitors, marketing plan, as well as their full-page advertisement and video. Follow your favourite teams via various social media sites that the teams choose to use! Votes

can be entered ten times per day, per IP address, at abbynews.com/contests.

However, every contestant has immunity for the first four weeks. The News will track the weekly votes and announce them via Twitter every Thursday at 8 a.m. at twitter.com/abbynews. In the Thursday, June 13th edition of The Abbotsford News there will be a mass elimination of seven teams. Voting for the remaining three teams will continue until Friday, June 21 at 5 pm.

THE FINALE: Three last teams will be invited to the grand finale at Finnegan’s Pub on Monday, June 24. In a boardroom setting, the judges will take into consideration the votes, the teamwork, the project and the sponsor evaluations.

In addition, each contestant will provide an individual pitch as to why he or she should be the Freshman of the Year.

There, the winner will be announced and presented with the prize.

A twist will coming on the night!

Team Regional Recycling has been paired up with the Rotary Club of Abbotsford.

Our plan for this charity is to collect as many donations as possible and give our charity exposure.

Andrew Franklin, president of the Rotary Club of Abbotsford let us know about a campaign that rotary started for Polio vaccines; End Polio Now.

Polio is a disease and although vaccinations cannot cure a child, it can prevent it. Team Regional Recycling has been collecting donations for this cause. Every 60 cents donated will pay for one vaccination. Anyone that has donated has been placed in a draw.

Near the end of June, a name will be picked out of the box of entrants for an $85.00 gift card to Sevenoaks Shopping Centre. When we meet with a donor, we always tell them a bit about the Rotary Club and all they do to contribute to others in need.

We were given $100 to help start up the fundraiser. Team Regional Recycling has a goal of raising $250 per team member.

We feel that we have raised both dollars and exposure for our charity.

Team Bosley will be holding an open house at Shamrock Counselling on June the 22nd to raise awareness for the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre. Shamrock Counselling does equine therapy for everyone including children.

We are planning to have a hotdog and food stand to raise money, as well as a silent auction. The silent auction will feature products from Bosley’s as well as from local artists. We will attract guests with hay rides, which Shamrock has offered to provide. We are also working to see if we can bring in ponies for pony rides, which, for a fee would also help bring in money for the Child Development Centre.

Team Bosley’s are going to raise

awareness for the FV Child Development Centre in two different ways. First we are going to have an informational booth, with a FVCDC rep. Secondly, we are going to have trivia placards and games around the farm. These placards are going to relate developmental and psychological disorders to animal behaviour in a simple way that children can understand and relate too. They will pose a simple question, like ‘how does a horse show its anxiety or fear; act it out’.

Guests can then answer as entries for a free prize draw.

There will be booths for Bosley’s and Shamrock Counselling’s Sundance Solace Society, We will be advertising via posters throughout the community before the event.

Our team met with David Scheach, Executive Director of BBBS of the Fraser Valley, to find out what their goals are for the future. We concluded the following; they need to find more male volunteers, they need to bring in more funding, and they need to create a marketing plan to appeal to the 18-35 year old demographic.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is Canada’s leading child and youth mentoring charity. Big Brothers Big Sisters Abbotsford, Mission, and Ridge Meadows have been active in the community since 1969. They facilitate life-changing relationships that inspire and empower children and youth to reach their potential, both as individuals and citizens. The Canadian Centre for Mental Health and Addiction has found that children who have a mentor are 2 times more likely to be successful in school, 2 times more likely to feel attached to their school and 2.5 times more

We have come up with a plan to use a social media video campaign to promote BBBS. Their YouTube channel has not been used in over a year, and they are now in the process of having it updated. Part of our contribution to BBBS will be producing several movie clips that they can then use on their YouTube channel, and share on Facebook and Twitter. They may also be able to send these video clips through email to potential donors and businesses that support BBBS. The use of social media will create more awareness of the positive influence that BBBS has on our community, and will help bring in more funding and more volunteers.

What if every child in Canada… finishes high school, goes to college or university, gets a job and gives back to the community? Wouldn’t that be something?

The Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) is a large company that provides a variety of charity work for the community of Abbotsford. ACS has several different programs such as the Food Bank, Christmas Bureau, Dental Clinic, Real, Cares Cards, Garden Box, and School Supplies to name a few. Because ACS is such a big company with so many helpful programs Jarret and I had to focus on a specific program. ACS decided it would be best if we focused on raising awareness and money for the Food Bank and the Dental Clinic.

The Dental Clinic brings in volunteer

We recommend that ACS improve its promotion and exposure for the Dental Clinic. One easy and effective way that this can be done is through social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Currently, ACS has just less than 600 ‘likes’, or fans, on Facebook and does not have a Twitter account.

A large online presence is crucial as it allows information to get out quickly.

To improve the reach and exposure of Abbotsford Community Services we recommend that they do the following: 1) create a Twitter account and link it to the current Facebook account and website 2) Set a marketing goal of reaching a target number of ‘likes’ and ‘followers’ on Facebook and Twitter in a short time(we recommend 1500 likes and 100 followers in 3 months) 3) add Facebook and Twitter widgets (links) to all current print resources such as brochures and pamphlets and online media 4) create a contest to encourage others to ‘like’ or ‘follow’ Abbotsford Community Services.

Another avenue that the ACS can currently pursue is working with the University of the Fraser and the UFV Student Union Society to create an on campus food bank donation area and advertise at events such as the upcoming Weeks of Welcome event hosted at UFV.

We also contacted two schools regarding fundraising for the Salvation Army. Abbotsford Traditional Secondary School and Ecole Clearbrook Elementary participated.

At Abbotsford Traditional, the leadership team decided to hold a bake sale, and the money generated from the sale all went to the Salvation Army. At Ecole Clearbrook, a three week clothing drive is being held to collect used clothing items for the thrift store. To motivate the kids to bring in clothes, a pizza lunch will be rewarded to the class that brings in the most donations.

Team Medimax rented a large pressure washer on the May long weekend. We had a clean up the sidewalks event on Promontory in Chilliwack. Promontory is a prestigious neighbourhood in the Chilliwack community. There are miles of sidewalks up here which people use on their daily walks, that needed a ‘spring clean’.

We had also offered to clean homeowner’s driveways for a small donation of canned goods to our

local food bank. The Idea took off like wild fire! Other residents that owned pressure washers joined in to help the team and by the end of the three day weekend we managed to raise tons of food for our food bank! We filled it back up, plus we cleaned up the streets and sidewalks so they looked like new again! It was a very successful campaign.

Our team was assigned to The Salvation Army. After meeting Deb Lowell, Public Relations Director, there were two specific words that really described our charity: supportive and fun. After being given a tour by Deb of the Centre of Hope and thrift shop, located on Gladys Avenue, we decided to make a short video to inform the public of the services provided to the less fortunate, as well as to promote the thrift store. Through the video, our goal was to increase exposure and public awareness of the Salvation Army Centre of Hope and all that they do in our community.

The clothing will be taken to the thrift store where it will be sorted cleaned and sold. The funds generated by the sale of items in the thrift shop directly benefit the Center of Hope and all of the people who use it. The money collected and donated by the bake sale will also go to the Center of Hope.

Matthew’s House is a home away from home dedicated to caring for children who live with complex healthcare needs. It was founded by members of the local community. Abbotsford Matthew’s house will require $750, 000 dollars in donations per year to fully operate. In honor of mothers this past Mother’s Day, Walmart donated 100 tulips which were sold outside of Lepps Market. The event featured brochures; containing information on the house, donation requirements and invitations to the October 11th opening ceremony.

The $330 raised from this phase will contribute to advertising in the second phase of the fundraiser, as well as thank you cards for sponsors.

Phase three: Holiday Ticket sales, “Treat your staff and friends this year to a night of team and family building for a good cause” The Abbotsford Heat will allow Matthew’s House to host a “Family Fun Night” where tickets sold by Matthew’s house will be split 50/50.

Phase four: Appreciate families who need Matthew’s House. The Abbotsford Heat has offered to donate a special night for a Matthew’s House family to enjoy an evening of fun, relaxation and hockey. This night will be fully accessible to a disabled child and their immediate family. It will feature special seating in the Captain’s corner, plus Heat merchandise and recognition at the game.

Our proposal is meant to be multifaceted and to connect to the public on many levels; from social networking to directly engaging with the community, we hope to reach as many people as possible. We have developed several ideas we believe will create a positive change and help spread the word about Abbotsford Restorative Justice and Advocacy Association. (ARJAA)

IDEA 1: OPERATION SOCIAL NETWORK Our first idea is to create more awareness about ARJAA by directing more traffic to their Facebook page.

This idea has been in motion since the beginning of May and will continue until the end of the summer. We have created a contest by using the $100 that ARJAA gave us as a cash prize.

IDEA 4: FESTIVAL SUPPORT On June 15, 2013 ARJAA will be partnering with the Abbotsford-Matsqui Rotary Club to host their Annual Wine and Beer Festival at Sevenoaks mall.

Proceeds from this event will be going to ARJAA and the Rotary Club.

IDEA 3: DRIVE ONE EVENT Team Rosborough has contacted Magnuson Ford. ARJAA is currently on the standby list for the next “Drive One Event.” This event will take place over the course of the summer. People come to test-drive a car and for every car driven Magnuson donates $20 to the charity of their choice.

Team Rosborough is also in the process of looking for people to donate items to the silent auction that will be held at this event.

IDEA 2: THE CINEMA EXPERIENCE The second idea we have to grow ARJAA’s network is to create a series of 3 videos over the course of the summer that they can post to YouTube and Facebook. These videos

CHARITY: Hunger Response

CHARITY: Abbotsford Hospice

Hunger Response has done many fundraisers in the effort to eliminate hunger in many third world countries.

One of their well- known initiatives is the “Rice Raiser.” Usually these fund raising events occur by partnering with local schools and raising money and rice for the less fortunate.

Our main suggestion for Hunger Response would be to continue their relationships with these and even more schools across Abbotsford and to get them more involved in other projects as well.

The Abbotsford Hospice Society is a group of amazing individuals that gives grace and dignity to those who are dying as well as to their grieving loved ones. During our meeting we discovered that they wish to target a demographic of individuals between the ages of 19-35 years old. They wish to spread the message that grieving is okay and that Hospice is there to help you through the tough spots in life. Diego and I loved the idea of spreading that message.

- During presentations in schools, we also suggest that the charity present testimonial videos that show the results of their fundraising efforts.

- Hunger Response can also engage children through craft clubs or art clubs in school to design things to sell and raise money for the cause.

- We also recommend that Hunger Response continues to reach out to corporate partners.

What we aimed to do, and hope that they look at proceeding with, is activities that attract young adults and new families. The first thing we did was bought silicone bracelets that would be sold at local businesses for donations to the Hospice.

We suggest Hunger Response; - Presents their mission and cause to local schools through assemblies and guest speakers.

- When working with the schools, fundraiser contests can be set up between schools and competitions to see which school can gather the most amount of donations and food.

We also brainstormed, and attempted, a flash mob that would bring people together in a moment of unity. Diego and I felt it was, and is, important to have events in a public, high volume area.

The events mentioned will help the community by bringing people together and raising awareness that the positive moments, such as enjoying food, participating in a flashmob, or even painting handprints on a table on campus, are the things we will always remember even in the hardest of times.
