Former child soldier works to rebuild his homeland Monybany Dau shares his inspiring vision for his native country Sudan

F

rom child soldier to activist.

That is the transformation that was undergone by Monybany Dau, a native of southern Sudan now living in Canada.

Dau fought with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in the Second Sudanese Civil War. Today, Dau works to rebuild South Sudan through Water for Atar, a project he founded that works to build clean drinking wells in Atar, Dau’s home village in South Sudan.

On April 13th, Dau was at Canadian University College in Lacombe to speak about the project and present The Ladder of my Life, a video documentary about Dau’s life and the struggles in Southern Sudan. The presentation was part of the 23rd anniversary celebrations of A Better World, which works with Dau on the Water for Atar project.

At the end of his presentation, Dau added that providing clean drinking water is just one small step in the right direction.

He said that clean water would eliminate many of the major health problems that plague Atar.

It was 1984 when Dau first became involved in the conflict of the Second Sudanese Civil War. When Dau was only nine years old, his uncle was killed by an SPLA roadside bomb.

Dau said in the video that the SPLA was fighting for the rights of the people of southern Sudan. However, incidents like the one that killed his uncle showed that civilians like Dau, his family and others who lived in the village of Atar, were not safe, even from the army that was fighting for them.

“We lived in fear of both armies,” said Dau. At nine years old, Dau did not know or understand why there was a war being fought in his homeland, but he certainly understood that there was a conflict. He also believed that, because of the war, he and his family were not safe.

Faced with this he saw few options. Dau decided to join the army that would best protect his interests, the SPLA, rather than flee into the jungle, and quite possibly die, for fear of both armies.

While Dau did not understand fully the implications of joining an army, he saw that SPLA soldiers were armed and could defend themselves. Dau felt that, as one of them, he would be able to protect himself and his family.

When the young Dau told his mother of his plans to join the SPLA, she of course objected. She told him he was too young,

His mother also told him that he should not join because she needed his help at home.

Despite his mother’s pleas, Dau remained fixed in his decision. He lied to his mother, telling her that he was going to a nearby pool to do a laundry trip the next day. He took a small amount of clothing with him and headed towards the pool, with no intention of returning.

However, unknown to Dau, his mother followed him and later found him. She again pleaded with him and tried to persuade him to return home but he would not go.

Dau said in the video that when most people think of a child soldier, they think

of someone who was abducted and coerced, often with the use of drugs or some other leverage, to fight for an army. He stressed that this was not the case with him.

“I was not abducted. I voluntarily joined.”

Dau added that there was no manipulation or brainwashing by the SPLA. He said that the decision was his to make and he would make the same decision again if he had to.

While a member of the SPLA, Dau served as bodyguard to a high-ranking officer. He said he considered it an honour and that he believed the war to be just. Dau added that those who died fighting with SPLA did not die in vain, they bought their freedom with their lives.

Such a cause may be worthwhile and honourable, but certainly not preferable.

Over two million people died in the Sudanese civil war and Dau said it was a vast violation of his human rights that he had to pick up a gun and fight to become a citizen in his own country.

Because of this, Dau now works toward a world where such an atrocity would never happen.

“I would like to build a world with no child soldiers.”

Now, Dau lives in Red Deer where he is studying business at Red Deer College. He said that he sees Canada, his new home, as a role model for the developing nation of South Sudan.

C4 Initiative hopes to bring community hub to City

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express A number of groups in Lacombe are working together to bring what they feel is a much-needed facility to the City.

Lacombe Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), Lacombe Daycare Society, the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre Foundation as well as Parent Link and Small Wonders Family Dayhomes, which are programs under FCSS, are banding together for a project to build a cultural community centre in Lacombe with spaces for the performing arts as well as children and family programming.

The project, known as the Cranna Community Culture Centre, or C4 Initiative has proposed to use plots of land owned by the City of Lacombe and Wolf Creek Public Schools for the location of the building.

As such, the initiative has been working with both parties to obtain the necessary approvals. Lacombe City council recently voted to hold the requested plot

for a period of two years while structural developments are being drawn and Wolf Creek Public Schools have provided C4 with a letter of intent to enter into negotiations to secure the land for the purposes of the C4 Initiative.

Susan MacDonald, executive director of Lacombe FCSS, said that the vision is for each of the partners involved with the C4 Initiative to have their own space or some kind of connection with the building.

She and Grant Harder, president of the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre Foundation, said that the groups involved currently have no existing facilities, do not have enough facilities, or need to update and upgrade their facilities.

The Lacombe Daycare is one such example. “The building is old,� said MacDonald. “It is in need of replacement in a bad way.� From the arts perspective, Harder said a community theatre is a necessity as there is currently a huge lack of performance space in Lacombe.

of this year’s Lacombe Music Festival, which had over 1,000 participants.

He said the Festival used churches, space at the Canadian University College, and other small venues scattered around the City to host the event. “The arts community in Lacombe makes do,� said Harder. “But the venues are inadequate.�

MacDonald said she envisions the C4 Initiative as a community gathering place, or a hub of activity for the City.

She said it would be a great advantage for children to head to daycare or a before and after school program and be able to take music lessons or participate in other performing arts in the same building. “There is so much potential,� said MacDonald.

It is too early to tell yet what the building will look like or all the features that it will have.

City lays out strategy for Solid Waste Roadmap input Pilot project receives mixed reviews from Lacombe City councillors

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Lacombians care a lot about how their garbage is managed.

This was clear at the April 8 regular meeting of Lacombe City council, where over 70 residents showed up to oppose council’s decision to replace back alley dumpsters with roll-out bins.

In response, council voted to revisit the Lacombe Solid Waste Roadmap and seek greater input from citizens of the community.

Then, at the regular council meeting on April 22, the City of Lacombe administration laid out its plan to gather that input.

Matthew Goudy, director of infrastructure services for the City of Lacombe, said in the meeting that the City would seek to engage the public through promotional materials, greater public presence and a pilot project. He added the timeline for this strategy would be four months.

Goudy said that, in accordance with the plan, Infrastructure Services would seek to speak to residents in person about the Solid Waste Roadmap through its presence at a number of farmer’s markets over the summer, two scheduled open houses, an increased presence at the Wolf Creek Recycle Depot and a barbeque at that site as well.

Signage placed on dumpsters, existing roll-out bins and the City’s garbage trucks could also help to raise public awareness about the issues surrounding the Solid Waste Roadmap, he said.

Monthly utility bill inserts, as well as the City of Lacombe web site and the currently running Citizen Satisfaction Survey would also be used to provide information and receive feedback from residents, he added.

Goudy also said that, after the four-month period, these strategies should be reviewed by administration to see if they can be used for future projects as well.

Councillor Outi Kite agreed and said that the strategy should be used as a pilot for public engagement in general.

“When I was reading this I thought, wow! This must be the most ways of engaging the public that I have ever seen,” said Kite.

She added that she was very appreciative of the work that had been done and felt it was well worth the cost, which was just over $17,000.

However, there was one part of the strategy that was hotly debated among the councillors.

A pilot project was also proposed as part of the public engagement strategy.

The pilot would involve a test area where dumpsters would be removed and replaced with roll-out bins for the four-month period of May to August, said Goudy.

Residents in the area would be able to provide feedback through direct interaction with administration as well as a dedication hotline and email address before, during and after the pilot.

A report presented to council by Goudy read that the pilot project would deal with recycling and compost as well and would be rolled out in sections each month.

Councillor Wayne Rempel was in favour of the pilot. He said that all of the people he spoke to regarding the pilot project said they were “Absolutely, 100 per cent in favour” of a pilot project, including those who were opposed to roll-out bins overall. He added that several of those he talked to had never used roll-out bins and were only opposed to them because they had been told roll-out bins would be worse than dumpsters.

“Once I explained it to them, they had a different viewpoint,” said Rempel. He added that he thought the pilot

“I think we’re all missing the point that we are living in a pilot project,” said Christie.

While Creasy moved that the public engagement strategy be amended and the pilot project removed from the strategy, the motion was voted down.

In the end, council voted to go ahead with the public engagement strategy in its entirety.

LACOMBE Fashion Show Clad in custom fitted corsets of various styles and makes, 26 models hit the runway at The Art of the Corset Arts Benefit and Fashion show last Friday at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

The corsets, provided by Levanah’s Workshop out of Edmonton, were a part of the benefit that also included an art gallery with pieces available for purchase.

The show also had live music from local musicians, as well as a mix and mingle that gave patrons the opportunity to sample gourmet hors d’ouevres and purchase wine by the glass.

“For me, corsets are works of art,” said Maureen MacKenzie, event organizer and master of ceremonies for the evening.

“They are simply stunning and well made and each one is individually tailored.”

The benefit and fashion show, organized by the City of Lacombe, were part of an annual event to raise awareness and funds for the Lacombe Arts Endowment fund, in which they hope to raise $1 million for.

The City explains that the proceeds from the fund are used for grants in the arts to further the education and experiences for emerging and established artists in visual, performing and literal arts.

The fund has already allowed for two $250 awards given to local student exhibitors and as of 2008 a $1,200 grant to support the artistic development of individual artists whose primary residence is located in Lacombe.

“We wanted people to realize that art is more than painting and sculptures,” said Mackenzie on why they chose the corset show.

“We wanted to show that women could be strong, stunning, beautiful, and empowered while wearing well-made clothing.”

While nothing has been set in stone for next year’s event, MacKenzie stated that there are many ideas floating around to continue to raise awareness for the endowment fund and to top this year’s success. jswan@reddeerexpress.com

We welcome you to the very first edition of the Lacombe Express!

We are excited to be part of this flourishing community and to provide our readers with the very best in local coverage of news, entertainment, sports, features and various local events.

Our goal is to be your ‘go-to’ source for all things pertaining to Lacombe, Blackfalds and the surrounding area.

We are also looking forward to covering the news from Lacombe County.

There is certainly much to be excited about in regards to the community, and what better time to become a part of the City. Just last month, as you know, the City of Lacombe was ranked eighth overall in the ‘Best Places to Live in Canada’ category for 2013 by MoneySense, Canada’s personal finance magazine and personal finance web site.

As Alberta’s newest City, Lacombe is indeed growing quickly, thanks in part to a strong economy, low taxes and a vibrant cultural scene. There is also a real character to the City with its unique historic downtown, “Where a revitalization project has protected the past and provides current businesses and stately homes with the perfect blend of history.”

In addition to its eighth overall

finish, the City also placed third on the ‘Best Small Cities’ in Canada list, and ranked 10th in the ‘Best Places to Raise Kids’ category. These statistics are certainly something to be proud of, and we hope to help spread the word about Lacombe’s many qualities to our readers here and beyond the City.

In order to help further our success, we also really want to hear from you as well. Please feel free to send us your letters, drop by our office, and let us know your story ideas. Local residents ultimately are one of the best sources for the most meaningful stories, and we encourage you to be a part of what we do.

We also have an ‘FYI’ section which features local upcoming events, and we welcome submissions about meetings and seminars as well.

Again, we want to say thank you to everyone who has made us feel so welcome and comfortable settling into the community and we look forward to being an integral part of this thriving City.

VOSSEN First though, a little bit about me. I have two younger brothers.

The younger of the two is finishing his first year of engineering at University of Saskatchewan and the older is a police officer in Saskatoon.

My dad is a retired police officer who now runs the town hockey rink in the winter and works as a farmhand in the summer.

My mom is a teacher who, I’m convinced, has taught the majority of students who went to school in Saskatchewan between the years

of 1988 and now.

I’m originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan but grew up in the very small town (village, actually) of Viscount, just east of Saskatoon.

After graduating from high school, I moved to Calgary where I studied journalism at Mount Royal College, which became Mount Royal University halfway through my studies.

It was while studying at Mount Royal that I met my girlfriend, Lisa who was also in the journalism program and lived just across campus from me as we both stayed in residence for the entirety of our post-secondary careers.

Lisa grew up in Ponoka and as such we spent our summers (and later on much more of the year) largely apart from each other.

After graduating from Mount Royal, I got a job as a reporter for the Hanna Herald in Hanna, Alberta. While working in Hanna, I also volunteered with the fire department, something I had also done as a junior firefighter in Viscount.

I worked in Hanna for a year before being promoted and trans-

ferred to Pincher Creek to take over as editor for the Pincher Creek Echo.

While working in Pincher Creek, I quickly fell in love with the country around southern Alberta.

Being from Saskatchewan, I had already developed a deep passion for mountains during my time in Calgary and found Pincher Creek to be the perfect place to indulge in that passion. Close enough to the mountains to admire them, but not so close as to make a former prairie boy feel claustrophobic.

I spent a fair amount of time taking advantage of the hiking and outdoor activities surrounding Pincher Creek.

However, I was not able to take advantage of the beautiful countryside for too long. After a few months of working in Pincher Creek, Lisa and I decided that after five years it was time to start a life together and I took the job here as editor of the Lacombe Express.

Lisa and I have since found a comfy condo to rent here in Lacombe (after a month of looking) and will be moving in next week-

end. I am very happy I will not only be getting to know this great City by working in it but I also get to join the community and become a part of it. I have not been in the Lacombe area for very long but I already get the strong feeling that I am going to like it here.

Already, I have found the community to be very friendly and welcoming to both myself and the paper. This is something I am quite grateful for and I look forward to continuing to develop a relationship with this community and its citizens both personally and through the paper.

As such, please feel free to drop in the office to meet me and the rest of the staff at the Lacombe Express.

fyi EVENTS Pause Musicale - student concerts will be held the fourth Friday of each month (except March). The next one runs April 26 from noon to 12:30 p.m. at St. Andrews United Church (5226 51 Ave.) The 24th annual Spring Equipment Consignment Auction runs April 27 starting at 9 a.m. four miles south of Lacombe on Hwy 2A, two miles east on Lakeside Sargent Rd. The event takes place at the Montgomery Auction Sales Centre.

Motivational speaker reaches out to students Josh Shipp shares message of courage and living your best possible life

BY ERIN FAWCETT Lacombe Express A well-known teen motivational speaker spoke to hundreds of students in Central Alberta last week in hopes of inspiring them with his message.

Josh Shipp, 31, who has appeared on Oprah, Anderson Cooper and Good Morning America, among others, shared his message to “Be better, not bitter” after going through struggles in his childhood and deciding to learn from them rather than dwell on them.

He has also written a book entitled The Teen’s Guide to World Domination, has a television show called Jump Shipp and has spoken to more than two million students

and parents.

Shipp grew up in Oklahoma. His biological mother gave birth to him at the age of 17 and left him at the hospital after he was born.

“I am an orphan. I have never met my real mom or my real dad. Truth be told I’ve never met anyone related to me except for one person in my entire life,” he said.

By the time Shipp was eight-years-old he had lived in a dozen different foster homes.

“Because I was hurt as a kid I became angry and I didn’t trust any adult including some of my teachers and foster parents.”

After being kicked out of a number of foster homes, Shipp was put into a group home. Fifteen people aged five to 21-years-

old lived there. During his stay at that group home he was raped by an adult.

“In that instant I made this decision – I hate myself, I hate my life, and I’m done,” said Shipp during his talks in Red Deer.

In his teenage years, Shipp said he became defiant and rebellious. He eventually met his current foster parents and slowly began to turn his life around.

Despite his trials and tribulations, he has decided to take his experiences and create a message and one that young adults can relate to. Shipp began professionally speaking when he was 17-years-old.

“I’m not here in your town talking to you guys because I think I’m perfect and I have it all figured out. I hate that people call me a motivational speaker because people think I am always positive. ‘Let me guess, motivator-boy, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade’. Nope. Every time life gives me lemons, I squirt life in the eye with the lemons.”

As a teenager in school, Shipp said he was bullied and as a result tried to end his life several times.

“If you have a heartbeat, it’s not too late for you,” he said. “If someone is being a jerk to you, saying words to you, unfortunately as much as we wish we could control that person and shut them up, we can’t. You can only control how you respond. How do you shut them down? Be kind, be calm – meaning what they’re trying to get out of you is a reaction. If you do not respond, they’ll go find someone else.”

He added even though society encourages everyone to live a perfect life, everyone has imperfections and it’s unrealistic to think a person can be perfect.

“Your imperfections make you human and it’s actually your humanity that makes you influential. Some of you right

now believe this lie that everyone’s life is perfect and yours is not. Some of you believe that everyone has it figured out and you don’t, everyone else is confident and you are not,” he said. “The truth is that no one’s life is perfect. And the good news is when you realize we’re all a bit messed up and we all have our stuff, it gives you not only the permission to know that you aren’t weird, you’re not broken, but rather you’re human, that’s it.”

He told students it is important to talk out their problems and to not ignore them because they won’t go away on their own.

“What you do not talk out, you act out.

Turning your back to your problems, pretending they don’t exist, trying to act perfect because everyone else around you is acting perfect, is only going to haunt you, chase you and follow after you,” said Shipp.

“But if you want to be brave you could turn around, find a caring adult, talk to them, and have the courage to turn around and face that ghost.

“This is something that few of you will do, but frankly most of you won’t. But if you do, it will make a difference in your life.”

Shipp left students with a challenge and that was to try and live their best life possible.

“You can choose to live an average life, or a meaningful life – to be unsuccessful or successful – to waste your talent or to embrace your talent,” said Shipp. “You have that choice every single day – to bring your best or to not.

“Success doesn’t care whether or not you’re perfect or your parents are rich or poor or your parents are together or they are not. It cares whether or not you are willing to do what it takes.” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Spring romance: the top 10 tips for singles and seeking Ah, springtime – the skies are blue and love is in the air. Every year around this time, my inbox fills with questions from those looking for love. In response, I’ve compiled a short list of dating tips that you may want to tape to your fridge if you’re a single-and-seeking.

MACLEOD 1. Have a positive attitude toward love. Sour people are a turn-off and your date will pick up on your negativity. You may have had bad experiences in the past, but you must learn to separate your personal experiences from the experience of love itself.

2. Be fair to your date.

Your date may wear the same sunglasses as an undesirable ex, but that doesn’t mean he or she is the same person. Don’t

project your resentment onto someone you hardly know. At the same time, be on alert for ‘red flags’ you’ve seen before (ie: excessive drinking, controlling behaviour, etc.) and have the foresight to end the relationship quickly.

3. Leave your baggage at home. While you and your date may want to exchange basic background info — which includes past relationship history — don’t drag him or her down your ‘misery memory lane’.

Trash your checklist, too — it’s that mental list that idealizes Mr. or Mrs. Right.

Get real and judge your date on his or her merits.

4. Challenge your beliefs and assumptions.

Don’t ditch your date just because he or she has different opinions, beliefs, or interests. It is possible to reconcile some differences.

5. Keep your perspective. Remember that you’re on a date, not in front of a justice of the peace. Accept the date for what it is — an hour or two of your time.

It isn’t your last chance for happiness.

6. Be on your best be-

haviour. Think of a first date as a job interview. You wouldn’t dress overly casual or revealing, tell dirty jokes or get drunk when meeting a prospective employer.

Act like a lady or a gentleman. That isn’t oldfashioned behaviour — it’s grown-up behaviour.

7. Trust the universe.

Many people self-sabotage, believing that they will never be happy. There is enough happiness in the universe to go around.

Proudly claim some for yourself. That confidence can make good things happen.

8. Make your date feel good. Some people will cut down their date in an effort to make themselves look better. If this is your strategy, be aware that it has the opposite effect. A better strategy is to focus on making your date feel good about herself or himself by dishing out a few sincere compliments, smiling, keeping eye contact, and being respectful. Even if you’re not enjoying the date, no good can come from hurting another per-

son. Not only is it mean, it can lead to some nasty karma.

9. Be kind to yourself.

Realize that it’s normal to be nervous on a first date and don’t fight the feeling.

In fact, nervousness can be endearing to a date. It humanizes you and makes your date feel desirable.

Plus, the way your date handles your nerves will speak volumes about her or his personality.

10. Keep it real. Your mom was right — be yourself. Instead of labouring to maintain a witty, sophisticated or intelligent conversation, talk about what you know. Sharing stories about your family and interests not only keeps the conversation comfortable and real, it opens up shared ground between you and your date. Your date isn’t focusing on your words, he or she is focusing on you as

a total package.

Lastly, remember that most people want the same things from a potential partner — honesty, a good sense of humour and a positive, fun-loving attitude toward life. Nurture those in yourself, take a few chances and you will find your perfect fit.

Charity run raises money for schools in Afghanistan Initiative spearheaded by project manager of Lacombe-based A Better World

On April 28, Lacombe will be hosting its Freedom Run to raise funds for A Better World and its 100 Classroom Project.

Azalea Lehndorff, A Better World’s project manager for Afghanistan, said that the event is sponsored by Co-Operators this year and past events have raised a total of $50,000.

It will take place at the Canadian University College Physical Education Center.

Participants can take part in a 2km, 5km or 10km walk and run.

For Lehndorff, who spearheaded the 100 Classroom Project, seeing her idea realized was a very rewarding experience.

“I guess the most exciting thing for me was going to Afghanistan for the first time and getting a chance to meet the people,” said Lehndorff.

She added that it gave her a different perspective on Afghanistan, much of it contrary to the war-torn country that is often portrayed in the media.

Lehndorff joined A Better World in 2010 when she was at Canadian University Col-

lege and got an idea for a project to build classrooms in Afghanistan.

She then discovered that A Better World was already working in Afghanistan and approached Eric Rajah with her idea who allowed her to take on the project of building 100 classrooms in Afghanistan with the help of the organization.

“WE’RE HOPING TO BUILD TWO MORE SCHOOLS THIS YEAR - TWO GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOLS. THAT WILL BRING US TO 48 CLASSROOMS.” AZALEA LEHNDORFF It was while reading a book entitle Three Cups of Tea that Lehndorff came up with the idea to build classrooms in Afghanistan.

The book, about a man who works to reduce poverty and promote education, gave Lehndorff the idea to do something similar.

Realizing that she could do something to tangibly help someone was an exciting experience, she added.

Inspiration for Lehndorff’s project came from her own personal experience as well.

She said that while growing up in the United States, her parents were not supportive of her getting an education.

It eventually came to the point where she and her sister had to leave their home at the age of just 13 in order to attend high school.

“I was very passionate about giving that opportunity to other people,” said Lehndorff.

“That’s why it’s kind of sparked my interest and I wanted to do something.”

To date, the 100 Classroom Project has raised about $50,000 to its cause, said Lehndorff. She added that, at the time, that’s all that was thought would be needed.

However, now the project looks like it will take at least $1 million to complete.

However, Lehndorff also said that the project has resulted in several classrooms being built and is nearing the halfway mark.

“So far we’ve built four schools,” she said.

“We’re hoping to build two more schools this year - two girls’ high schools. That will bring us to 48 classrooms.”

Girls in particular have difficulty obtaining an education in Afghanistan. Part of this is because women rarely work outside the home and as such many families have a ‘what is the point’ kind of mindset to female education.

Fortunately, this is changing. Lehndorff said that the request for the last two schools came from rural communities, who traditionally have even more reason to keep their daughters at home because farmers need more bodies for labour in the house and around the farm.

Freedom Run will take place on April 28 beginning at 10 a.m.

Two iPad minis are to be given away as top prizes for the two highest fundraisers for the event.

Lehndorff said that participants are encouraged to register early online.

Health expo offers tips and resources for a healthier lifestyle

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express With people all over the world more and more health conscious, there is an overwhelming amount of information available on how to live a healthy lifestyle.

To help sort through that information, Lacombe Seventh-day Adventist Church is hosting a health expo from 5-8 p.m. on April 27 at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

Darlene Blaney, volunteer health coordinator for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, said that the expo is about

helping people make simple changes to become healthier before it becomes a serious problem.

“People are trying to find other natural ways of improving their lifestyle and their health,” said Blaney. She added that people are also looking for ways to prevent health concerns before they start. “Prevention is key.”

The expo will consist of eight different booths, each covering one of the different ‘health laws’ of a healthy lifestyle. These laws are nutrition, exercise, water, sunlight, temperance, air, rest and trust.

each of these laws, then you will be able to have a more optimal, balanced life,” said Blaney.

She added that just because someone doesn’t have a bad habit like smoking doesn’t mean that person is healthy because not drinking enough water can make you just as sick.

Each booth will have activities regarding the health law that it represents. For example at the fitness booth, the Harvard Health Test will tell participants what kind of fitness level thy are at according to their race and gender while visitors to the rest booth can enjoy a five minute back massage.

One feature of the expo that Blaney highlighted was discovering your health age.

She said the program uses computer analysis of individuals’ habits and lifestyle patterns to determine how their health age stacks up against their chronological age.

Other tests like blood pressure and BMI calculation will also be featured at the expo.

After going through all the booths, those who attend the expo will have the opportunity to review everything they have learned and ask any questions they have about the information they have gained, said Blaney.

She added that those in attendance will also have the opportunity to be connected with resources so that they use what they have learned at the expo to continue living a healthy lifestyle.

Health is something that affects everyone in the family and so the health expo is designed to be a family activity, she said.

“The nice thing about this is it’s not for any specific age or gender; it’s for everyone,” said Blaney. She added that families should promote the idea of healthy living as a family as well.

She also said that, despite what many might think, achieving a healthy lifestyle is not a difficult task.

“I think there is a lot of confusion out there,” said Blaney. “Everybody has different perspectives and myths and ideas.

“Really, it comes down to some basic guidelines.”

Health expos like this have been held all over the world and exist to give people an idea of where they stand in regards to a healthy lifestyle, she said.

Tenille encourages students to follow their passions

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express “I dare you to be original, I dare you to be remarkable.”

These are the words of Dare to Be, a song by young Alberta musician Tenille who recently performed for students at Ecole Lacombe Junior High School as part of her Play it Forward tour.

Tenille said that the tour name is a play off the idea of paying it forward and is about a little more than just music.

“Play it Forward is about encouraging kids to do whatever they love and then take that and play it forward and help other people.”

Like many musicians, Tenille was introduced to music at a very young age. Growing up in Grande Prairie, she started singing when she was five and has been playing guitar and writing songs since she was 14.

“Music has been a huge part of my life.”

Throughout her life, Tenille has always been attracted to music. She said that, now, she uses music as a way to express herself, reach out and connect with others.

Tenille also said that it is her deep passion for music that has allowed her to make a career out of it, even at the young age of 19.

“This has been such a huge goal and vision for me,” she said.

“I feel like there has been a lot of focus towards growing this, even at a young age, into a career.”

Following one’s passion is part of the message that Tenille was sharing with the students of Ecole Lacombe Junior High School. She encouraged students to be themselves and find some way to be original.

She added that she hopes doing this will inspire the students and help instill confidence in them to realize themselves to their fullest potential.

“It’s so important to be able to find something that you love to do whether that is a sport or music or art,” said Tenille.

“It’s so important to set goals for yourself and work towards something.”

Tenille also said that she enjoys working with children because of the great potential that they have. She added that she loves being able to perform for and work with kids to encourage that kind of growth, which she said is important to have all through life.

Presenting an important message to students, rather than just performing for entertainment’s sake, is something new for Tenille and it is the focus of her Canadawide tour.

While it may be a new experience, the pairing is one that Tenille is clearly comfortable with and she said can only help her in her career.

Canadian artists share the bill for Central Alberta show

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Toronto’s Peter Katz and Emma-Lee are bringing their remarkable musical talents to The Hideout in Red Deer on April 28.

Though their genres vary Katz falls more into the folk/ roots category where Emma-Lee leans toward soulful alt-country - their audiences tend to be familiar with both artists.

Locals can enjoy their singular talents during their City stop.

Their collaborations began when Emma-Lee asked if Katz would sing on Where You Want To Be, a track on her then-upcoming debut Never Just A Dream back in 2010.

The two have been collaborating both on stage and in songwriting since. (Emma-Lee also appears on Katz’s 2012 release Still Mind Still, singing on the hauntingly beautiful It Was You).

“You meet a lot of other artists on the road, and while many of them are great, every now and then you come across one with whom you share an extra-special kinship,” said Katz.

“Emma-Lee is one of those rare people. She’s a super creative, fearless songwriter, and collaborating with her is great because neither of us will let the other give up on a good idea, nor let a

not-so-good one through - we really hold each other to our best.

“We found we had a lot in common as far as our drive and focus went. When we started writing together, I realized she is really a kindred spirit – in how she approaches her career, her willingness to put herself on a limb and take risks.”

Recently, Katz and Emma-Lee got together at the Toronto Zoo to film and record their inspired banjo and guitar cover of Tina Turner’s What’s Love Got To Do With It video.

It’s a glimpse into what audiences on their current tour can expect to hear from the pair. Each artist performs their own material, sometimes accompanied by the other, as well as some covers and originals which they will perform together. The new single What’s On Your Mind is their first publicly released original collaboration. “It started loosely with a chorus idea I had and then I suggested we try to write verses line for line improvising, we had to accept what the other person said,” says Katz. “That really gave us a ton of freedom creatively and it all came together quickly.

“The original version of it is a bit more folksy and bit ‘over the top’ playful – it works well when we’re are presenting it as a duo.

“In both of our solo projects

we tend to be a little more serious, a little more cerebral. When we came together to work on this new project, it felt like an opportunity to do something different.”

Indeed, Katz captivates listeners with his unique brand of contemporary folk music. A passion for music was sparked early on – he recalls a household filled with music during his formative years.

“My dad would try out instruments, play them for a month and then ditch them which was great because there ended up being all of these instruments around the house that I inherited. It was never a big focus, but my parents certainly made an effort to expose us to the arts in general. I always loved it.”

But he didn’t consider music a viable career choice until his final year in university.

“I then realized all the people in the world that I was most interested in were artists. I thought why don’t I pursue this? Why don’t I just go for it?”

Working on his guitar skills led to a discovery of a knack for singing, which in turn led to exploring the craft of songwriting. He tends to set aside specific time to write songs, although there are those moments of raw inspiration.

“I was sitting there the other day talking to my wife, and I was looking at her, and this whole

I said I’m sorry, I have to interrupt this conversation and go write this song. We’ve been together for 10 years and she knows me very well, so it wasn’t a problem,” he laughs. “Every now and then you get sort of touched by an angel, and it happens. I’m kind of a believer in the ‘make an appointment to write and the inspiration will follow’ philosophy.”

“That to me is the best part.

For me I think I just write songs because I want to play them for people,” he explains. “I love when a song comes to life for an audience, I love that they are different every night, and I love writing a song in the morning and playing it that night. The Red Deer Symphony Orchestra presents their next main series concert on April 27 at the Red Deer College Main Stage at 8 p.m. with Eroica.

Audiences will also be delighted by returning guest pianist Mayron Tsong performing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1. Noted for its impressive scale, grandeur and technical difficulties, this work replaces the Prokofiev Piano Concerto which was originally programmed.

The program opens with a beautiful and thoughtful Andante by Canadian composer Milton Barnes, and closes with a performance of Beethoven’s popular Symphony No. 3 Eroica, notes Claude Lapalme, RDSO music director.

Full of both tragedy and humour, this work was originally planned as musical testimonial to Napoleon’s glory – however, after Napoleon crowned himself emperor, Beethoven, in a fit of rage, revised the manuscript to read “Heroic Symphony to celebrate the memory of a great man.”

As RDSO Music Director Claude Lapalme explains in his concert notes, the

first performance of the symphony could hardly have been called a success.

Audiences were stunned and “Beethoven, like Napoleon, had gone too far.”

Lapalme explains that Beethoven had shattered the remaining “shackles that had tied him to Austrian classicism in a spectacular way. The work is longer (50 minutes) and bigger (three horns) than anything previously written; it is also full of bold harmonies (especially in the middle of the first movement), stunning key changes, tragedy, humour and excruciating difficulties for the musicians.”

But in time, the work’s tremendous power and complexities would eventually win audiences over.

“It did not take long for the symphony to take hold, however; it opened the doors to the new century in decisive fashion and overtook the world of music as well as any successful Napoleonic campaign.”

Meanwhile, the RDSO’s annual raffle prize will also be drawn on April 27.

Next up for the RDSO is The World Of Williams, slated for June 5 on the Arts Centre mainstage.

Performance time is 7:30 p.m. The evening is devoted to the works of composer John Williams, known for his scores for movies ranging from Schindler’s List to Jaws to Jurassic Park. As Lapalme points out, “No living composer has come close to receiving the level of recognition bestowed upon him. “Williams truly believes that much of the emotional undercurrent of a film is enhanced, even at times provoked, by music.

“His immense production, which includes concert pieces as well as film scores in all styles from adventure movies, comedies, dramatic pieces, historical films, science fiction and children’s fare, demonstrates a tireless devotion toward the goal of expressing what images alone cannot express.”

Acronaires to be inspired by Cirque du Soleil

TECHNIQUE - The Canadian University College Acronaires perform at their annual home show which was recently held. The show was entitled ‘Around the World in 40 Years’ and was themed after the extensive global touring the Acronaires have done in the past four decades.

On April 22, Lacombe’s own acrobatics team, the Acronaires, left for the Silver State to begin an ambitious tour that will have them performing 14 shows in about four and half days.

Founded in 1974, the Acronaires are a performance-based acrobatics team that is dedicated not only to achieving excellence themselves, but also encouraging others to do so.

Ron Schafer, Acronaires head coach, said whenever the Acronaires perform they also share a message with the audience that promotes physical fitness, a strong work ethic and staying in school.

Schafer said the Acronaires often tour outside of the country to spread this message but with this tour there is something more to it as well.

“I want the kids to see a live Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas,” said Schafer. He added that he hopes the show will inspire even some of the better performers.

“We’re just scratching the surface of what can be done,” said Schafer.

“If you watch Cirque du Soleil do what they do, it’s really quite amazing.”

Leo van Gulfan, assistant coach of the Acronaires and a veteran member of four years, agreed that Cirque du Soleil is on a whole other level of ability and he is more than excited for the opportunity to see a live show on the group’s home stage.

“It’s always been my dream to see Cirque du Soleil,” said Gulfan.

Not only do the Acronaires get to watch the performers of Cirque Du Soleil, they get to work with them.

One of the schools on the Acronaires’ Las Vegas Tour will be the Andre Aggassi College Preparatory Academy, where Cirque du Soleil members regularly teach

workshops on a weekly basis.

While in Vegas, Acronaires will also have a chance to teach workshops alongside members of Cirque du Soleil.

Gulfan said that while he does not necessarily aspire to join Cirque du Soleil one day, he is certainly inspired by their abilities. He added that being around such impressive performers is sure to be an enlightening experience.

“When you are with a group that really knows what they are doing, it’s inspiring,” said Gulfan. “You can really learn so much.”

Gulfan also said that while the Acronaires may have certain limitations, they still work hard to achieve the pinnacle of performance that is Cirque du Soleil.

“If possible, we want to take our show to that level,” said Gulfan.

Touring is a big part of what the Acronaires do, Schafer said, so much so that when the team held its annual home show

at the beginning of April, it was entitled ‘Around the World in 40 Years.’

Schafer said that since the team first started, they have toured all over Canada, a third of the United States, Jamaica, Nicaragua and several places in Europe.

This year, there are about 33 members on the team.

He added that the roster varies from year to year, but there are usually between 20 and 40 members on the team and a fairly even split between male and female members.

Most of the Acronaires, he said, are college-aged performers but there are some high schoolers and even a few older members as well.

Competitive dance straddles line between art and sport

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express While dance is often seen as an art form, there is a competitive side to it as well.

Kelly Oehlerking, a dancer at Dancer’s Edge Studio in Lacombe, has been dancing since she was about five and has been competing for the past six years.

At a recent competition in Olds, she received four gold medals, two silvers and one bronze. Oehlerking said she decided to start competing in order get more out of her dancing.

“I wanted to take it more seriously,” said Oehlerking. “The training is more serious (when competing) and you practice more often.”

Heather Buelow, owner and head instructor at Dancer’s Edge, agreed with her student.

“We are allowed to push the competitive dancers more,” said Buelow. She added that desire to push oneself is a trait she sees a lot in her competitive dancers.

Oehlerking a better dancer, she said.

“You just learn so much,” said Oehlerking. She added that, regardless of whether she does well or poorly at a competition, she also tries to work harder and do better next time.

Dancer’s Edge is currently in the middle of its competition season. Dancers from the studio have already participated in one competition in Olds and are currently at another competition in Sherwood Park which runs from April 24 – 28.

The third competition planned for the season is the Shy-Ann Dance Festival in Banff from May 1 – 4.

Top dances will also move on to the Grand Championships in June.

Buelow said that about 300 students in 104 dances competed in the Olds competition. She said the studio had seven dances in the dance-off and the several of them ended up with top mark in their categories.

Instructors from Dancer’s Edge were recognized at the competition as well, said Buelow. She said that

she received the second top choreography award for her senior tap number and it was the studio’s ballet instructor, Tania Strader, who took top choreography award for her ballet number.

This is the 10th season Dancer’s Edge has been competing, said Buelow.

She added that the school has grown a lot since its first season with only three dances and today has no problem staying competitive with schools its size and can even keep up with larger studios that have a bigger pool of dancers to draw from.

“We definitely hold our own,” said Buelow.

Between the studio in Lacombe and the one in Blackfalds, Dancer’s Edge has about 700 students and just under half of them compete, said Buelow.

She also said that most dancers start competing between the ages of 10 and 11 but most of her competitors are between the ages of 10-13.

A lot of preparation goes into getting dancers ready for the spring competition.

Buelow said that students start dancing in September and work on choreography generally starts between November and December.

To hone both the techniques and choreography

of their dances, students attend a separate class for each every week.

Competitive dancers will dance anywhere between two and over 10 hours a week to prepare for competitions, added Buelow.

“My senior dancers dance three to four hours a night a few times a week.”

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Basketball season may be over, but some players aren’t so eager to take a break from the game.

For Veronica Den Oudsten, who coaches boys’ basketball at Central Alberta Christian High School, that isn’t a problem.

In fact it’s a good thing as she is starting a springtime basketball league to help players continue to develop their skills in the off-season. “The reason behind it is just to have the basketball in the kids’ hands a few more times over the course of the year.”

Working on skills in the off-season gives players the chance to work on fundamentals and practice without the pressure of competition that exists during the regular season, she said.

She added that some basketball players don’t participate in other sports the rest of the year and the spring league gives them a few more opportunities to play and keep active in

sports outside of the regular season. Den Oudsten said that the spring league is different from practices during the basketball season because she will spend more time teaching skills and less time spent on conditioning. She added that it will focus more on single player skills rather than team skills.

“The idea, the premise of it is to develop fundamentals, to focus on fundamentals,” she said. “And of course giving them the opportunity to play because everybody likes to play.”

Another way Den Oudsten’s program differs is the level of commitment.

She said that her spring league is done on a kind of drop-in basis. While there is a core group of players who register and come to all the weekly sessions, there is no actual attendance expectations for those participating.

In the last couple years that Den Oudsten has been running programs like this, there are typically around 30 players that participate in the program with a core

group of 10-15 who show up for every session.

Sessions are held once a week and Den Oudsten reiterated that there is no commitment to show up.

She added that there is an actual competitive spring league in Central Alberta and that there are teams from Lacombe that play in that league. While her program is not related to the actual league, it still does give players a less serious opportunity to continue playing and developing in the off-season.

“Any kid that spends extra time trying to develop skills is going to get better,” she said. “If a kid is interested in learning than this is the place to go to try and focus on some of that.”

The Spring League Basketball program is open to both male and female players in Grades 9 to 11.
