Opposition to a cell phone tower in Willow Point is likely fueled by online scare tactics, a Telus representative said.

As Telus prepares to move forward with installing a cell phone tower in

Willow Point Park, some residents are voicing strong opposition.

Shawn Hall, spokesperson for Telus, said an Internet search can reveal some frightening misinformation about radiation levels emitted from cell phone towers and its harmful effects.

“If you Google it, some pretty

scary stuff comes up, put out there by people trying to scare people for their own interest,” Hall said. “Residents don’t have anything to worry about.”

But Nan Latchford, who lives about two kilometres away from the proposed tower site near the bocce ball court in Willow Point Park, feels

differently.

And she has a petition with 120 signatures backing her up.

“People’s biggest concern is they don’t want to see their children in a park that is shadowed by a cell tower, they do not want to go to recreational facilities and have a cell tower right there,” said Latchford, who is

Aquarium opens to large crowd on Ocean’s Day Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Around a hundred people eagerly lined up Saturday morning to get a glimpse of Campbell River’s newest attraction.

At 11:30 a.m., Coun.

Keith Wilson with the Cape Mudge band, cut the ribbon to officially open the brand-new aquarium at the foot of the fishing pier.

The opening was tied into Ocean’s Day which included various ocean exhibits, live music, food, face painting, and salmon print making.

But the big attraction appeared to be the aquarium, with nearly one hundred people forming a line to enter the building as the opening was announced.

Before cutting the ribbon, Mark Wunsch, president of the Discovery Passage SeaLife Society, acknowledged all the work that went into creating the aquarium which features about 30 tanks full of creatures native to the area.

“It’s about community building and sharing,” said Mark Wunsch, president of the Dis-

covery Passage SeaLife Society which runs the aquarium. “You don’t just do this project out

of your pocket.”

Wunsch said it was amazing how the community responded. Several business provided the society with monetary donations to get the aquarium up and running. Al and Sons provided an excavator to prepare the site for the building and Seymour Pacific put the building together, free of charge.

Wunsch said the idea behind the aquarium is to bring the sea life to the surface for everyone to enjoy.

“There is so much life here and it’s not really seen and we depend on it,” Wunsch said. “Our idea is to present some of that, bring the life to the surface for you who can’t go under water – which is fun, but not everybody can do that.”

Just minutes after the ribbon cutting, kids were already inside, sticking their hands in the cool water of the touch tanks.

Volunteers spoke to the kids as they gleefully picked up star fish and tiny crabs.

Visitors also viewed

tanks full of plankton, rock fish, sponges, coral, sea cucumbers, and sand dollars, among other things.

All of the sea life will be released in the fall when the aquarium will shut down until next season.

During that period, Wunsch said the plan is to run a speakers series through the winter to educate people not only in science, but to pass on First Nations traditions and history related to the ocean.

Wilson said the aquarium is a connection to First Nations culture.

“It’s a wonderful thing to see this aquarium going up, everybody can see what our ancestors have been seeing for years,” Wilson said.

Mayor Walter Jakeway praised the SeaLife Society for making the aquarium happen.

“Last year on Ocean’s Day this was only an idea and volunteers turned it into a reality,” Jakeway said. “A lot of people did a lot of work. We thank the volunteers for making

this aquarium become a reality – hopefully in years to come we can make it even bigger.”

The aquarium is open Sunday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for students and children six and up, free for children under five and $18 for a family (two adults plus up to four kids/students).

Season passes are available.

The sailors were then hosted for dinner at the Rip Tide Pub and the Discovery Harbour Marina provided moorage for the night.

Tuesday morning they set off for Hardwicke Island and another feast hosted by Marine Harvest at one of their salmon farms.

From there the race continued today to Telegraph Cove and then tomorrow they’ll set off for Port Hardy before continuing round the end of Vancouver Island and setting off down the west coast of the Island.

The city operated on a $66 million budget last year – a year that saw the city impose a hefty tax hike on residential property owners to make up for the loss of the Catalyst mill, according to the city’s 2012 annual report released Monday morning.

“Due to the substantial reduction in the tax revenues from Catalyst (reduced from $5.3 million in 2008 to $209,000 in 2012), coupled with council’s desire to maintain services, council settled on a 2012 residential tax increase of 13.6 per cent,” reads the report.

Property taxation made up 45 per cent of the city’s operations last year, while parcel taxes made up 1.5 per cent and user fees and other charges comprised 25 per cent of city operations. Senior government grants made up four per cent and reserves and third-party funding made up the remaining 24.5 per cent.

Of the city’s $66 million budget, $31 million funded operating and capital projects for water, sewer and airport and $35 million funded general operating expenses. Another $5.5 million was spent on capital projects related to roads, water, sewer and airport.

The annual report also includes the city’s auditor’s report which found the city’s consolidated financial statements fairly presented the financial position of the city.

According to the audit, the city’s net financial assets for 2012 were $23.1 million.

Revenue was $50.6 million, with $25.1 million of that coming from property taxes and parcel taxes. City expenses were $46.9 million last year.

municipal tax exemptions to 95 nonprofit and charitable organizations such as the Head Injury Society, River City Players, and Campbell River Figure Skating Club.

The report also recaps a year full of projects and highlights for the city.

In 2012, the fishing pier marked its 25th anniversary, participation in Bike to Work Week hit an all-time high, the city adopted a heritage program, and restoration of Baikie Island was completed and the park was reopened to the public.

The city also participated in a core services review which revealed that the city’s long-term outstanding debt is below average of other B.C. municipalities and that the city’s financial situation compares favourably with other similar-sized communities such as Mission, Penticton, Vernon, and Langford.

The city also invested in webcasting all of its council meetings and expanded transit service hours. The city adopted its Sustainable Official Community Plan and approved the Master Transportation Plan. Construction began on the city’s new water park and design work began on the St. Ann’s block revitalization project.

Looking ahead, council’s goals for future years are: economic diversification, exploring new revenue streams, achieve climate action charter compliance, explore alternative energy systems, revitalize downtown, build and maintain adequate infrastructure to meet current and future needs, improve internal communications, improve external communications and community engagement, improve relations with First Nations and establish relationships with education institutions.

“Cell towers put out hundreds or thousands of times below what’s allowed (by Health Canada),” Hall said. “You absorb more radiation by watching TV or using a microwave in your home than you would from our site. The radio signals coming off the tower are so low, it’s barely measurable.”

Telus, which is proposing to install the 30-metre tower in response to complaints about spotty coverage in the area, said Willow Point Park was chosen as the best location to provide coverage where there is a gap in cell phone service. He said the tower needs to be able to reach the areas where service goes in and out. Hall said Telus is following Industry Canada standards for acceptable radiation levels which are laid out in Health Canada’s Safety Code 6, which sets limits on radio frequency exposure.

But Latchford said Safety Code 6 has not been updated in at least three years and it’s now under review.

Hall said scientists are routinely reviewing the code as new science becomes available and the review is simply a process that happens every few years.

Still, Latchford said there has been a lack of communication with the public and though Telus is following Industry Canada requirements, it’s doing the bare minimum – including not holding a public open house.

“People have their concerns and feel there has been no transparency in this process,” Latchford said. “People don’t know how many antennas and what the affects are, we just had this tiny little ad in the paper.”

Telus, as per Industry Canada requirements, advertised its public feedback period in an ad that ran in both local newspapers. But Latchford believes that’s not enough.

needed but in this case, he said Telus is “hearing far more interest in letting (the tower) proceed than hearing any opposition.”

After Telus advertised its tower proposal in early March, the public had 30 days to respond.

Telus replied back over a three week period and the public had another 20 days after that to reply back. The consultation period ended last month and on Tuesday Telus presented all of the feedback it has collected at the Tuesday council meeting which starts after the Mirror goes to press. If council votes in favour of having the tower proceed, Telus will pay the city an annual licence fee of $15,000 over five years with three consecutive automatic five-year extensions.

She’s urging council to establish its own cell tower protocol to avoid a similar situation in the future.

“If the city had its own cell tower protocol it could identify areas that should be protected from radio frequencies, information requirements to the public could be improved, and public meetings could also be made a requirement,” Latchford said. “With the city’s own protocol, that situation can be improved because there will be more towers, I bet you.”

Canada Day set to explode in Campbell River Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

As in the past, this year’s Canada Day celebrations promise something for everyone.

Most of the line-up will fall in line with previous Canada Day weekend extravaganzas, but some special guests will make this year’s event even better.

To celebrate the 30-year anniversary of Campbell River’s sister city relationship with Ishikari, delegates from the Japanese city will take part in the parade and will speak at the opening ceremonies which take place at 5:30 p.m. at Robert Ostler Park.

But prior to that, a salmon barbecue sponsored by Quality Foods and Grieg Seafood kicks off the Canada Day weekend, starting at 5 p.m. at Spirit Square on the Sunday night before Canada Day. The Night Before Celebration also includes the car show, presented

by Tyee Chevrolet, also beginning at 5 p.m.

On July 1, the popular Kids Fest, complete with games, crafts, and face painting, returns.

“Last year we put 4,000 kids through Kids Fest,” said Carol Chapman, chair of the Canada Day Committee.

“They came out, they had fun and it didn’t cost their parents a

dime.”

The Hospital Bed Races are also back by popular demand and this year, 20 beds are expected to race down a 150 metre course on Shoppers Row. The event raises money for the Campbell River Hospital Foundation and the Campbell River Daybreak Rotary Club.

In the last two years combined, the bed races have raised more than $21,000 for both local charities.

Also zooming down Shoppers Row will be the belt sander races, right outside the CIBC bank.

While those events take over the downtown core, seniors will be treated to cake and tea donated by Quality Foods, from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Museum.

The Canada Day parade begins at 4 p.m. and is expected to have more than 300 participants.

Cities require more support Municipal politicians from across the country flooded into Vancouver for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ convention.

For decades Canada’s cities have been funding flows to telling Ottawa they need more money municipalities if they are to do the things they are increasingly expected to do.

The complaints began in the 1990s when the federal government cut funding as it dealt with a ballooning

deficit and public debt. As transfer payments to provincial governments shrank, so too did many of the services the federal government traditionally provided (like low cost housing).

Today, cities are faced with providing services they never did in the past, particularly in the realm of social services, transportation, and policing.

They’ve done this because they’ve had little choice.

There is no one left to download the cuts to.

Instead, they must find new revenue from a taxpayer pool that is shallow and offers little flexibility. Deferring expenses is an option, but as roads and bridges deteriorate, it leads to an infrastructure deficit.

That’s left municipalities calling for a change in the way cities are funded.

According to a report released at the convention, municipalities only receive eight cents of every tax dollar raised despite their expanding responsibilities.

There were promises of new money at the convention, but that’s not enough.What is needed is a change in the way the funding flows.

Canada’s cities have grown up. It is time federal and provincial governments stop treating them like children who are incapable of spending their allowance responsibly.

My wife and I have been picking up garbage for months in the Willow Point recreational area in and around the woods surrounding the sports fields. The first time I decided to do this I picked up over 20 shopping bags of garbage. Every weekend when we play disc golf we take a garbage bag with us and get a least one bag of garbage and several drink cans.

Where are the city workers picking up this garbage? I actually have seen them driving over garbage with their lawn mowers and leaving it there.

I just want you to know. Let the city try and stop me and my wife from making our playing areas more attractive and safer for everyone. I will not stop!

Victoria’s expense clean up must continue

As she unveiled her new cabinet, Premier Christy Clark promised a “line-byline” review of government spending to deliver a balanced budget this year.

Statements such as this would have more credibility if politicians subjected their own personal spending to the same scrutiny. That’s still not happening in B.C. Expense accountability has come a long way in the last year, thanks mainly to the work of now-departed Auditor General John Doyle, who swung the cobweb-covered door open on B.C.’s secretive Legislative Assembly Management Committee. Chaired by the speaker and run by senior MLAs from both parties, the committee had been doing pretty much whatever it

wanted with MLAs’ own expenses.

Doyle’s audit found that MLA credit card bills were being paid without receipts, part of a lax accounting system that included inaccurate bank records and inadequate management of the legislature gift shop and dining room. The operating budget of the legislature and constituencies runs to more than $60 million a year.

Now-retired speaker Bill Barisoff asked the auditor to give a pass to the $119,000 annual allowance for each of the 85 constituency offices. Transfer amounts and payroll expenses were verified, but constituency expenses were not, likely because these records weren’t kept either.

I’m not suggesting that there has

been any misuse of public funds. The point is we don’t know, and the notion of an “honour system” for politicians’ expenses has become unacceptable.

A similar toxic tale has been unfolding in the Senate in Ottawa.

It has its own secretive committee called the Board of Internal Economy, which was forced into the open after trying to sweep Senator Mike Duffy’s housing claims under the red rug of the Senate chamber.

Duffy has lived in Ottawa for decades, first as a TV host and then senator, but he decided the rules were loose enough that he could claim his summer place in Prince Edward Island as his principal residence. An audit has also found he was claiming living expenses

in Ottawa while campaigning for the Conservatives back east. It turns out the key ingredient in an honour system is honour.

This mess goes back more than a century in B.C. and Canada, and has its roots in the British Parliament, where MPs and Lords had a system of claiming all sorts of expenses, including construction of a “duck house” and maintenance of the moat around an Honourable Member’s castle.

Many years ago, British MPs convinced themselves that they were underpaid, and rather than create a public fuss by giving themselves a big raise, they would be able to top it up by claiming up to 250 pounds at a time without receipts.

Over 58 per cent of invasive plants arrive in Canada as landscape plants, ornamentals, agricultural crops or plants for medicinal and research purposes, and can become so abundant and widespread that they out-compete native

plants causing detrimental economic, social, and e nv i ron me nt a l impacts. Make sure that you are not spreading these unwanted seeds.

Before taking your boat out this summer, make sure you know how to properly Clean, Drain, Dry (CDD) your boat to prevent the spread of aquatic invasives.

The Clean, Drain, Dry program aims to engage BC boaters and local communities, providing education to reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species by watercraft. The CDD initiative encourages boaters

New hotel proposed for Shoppers Row Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Campbell River stands to benefit from another new development proposed for the downtown core.

This time around, it’s a new hotel.

According to site plan drawings of the proposed four-storey, 55-unit hotel, the building is expected to be a

Comfort Inn, located at the entrance to Shoppers Row just behind the former Super Valu in Tyee Plaza and across from what will be the new Berwick Seniors complex.

Kevin Brooks, the city’s senior planner, said the location will help brighten up the area which is a paved, vacant slab used by motorists as a back

entrance to Tyee Plaza and an informal parking lot.

“This site is one of the last remaining open development sites that fronts onto Shoppers Row,” Brooks said in a report to council.

“This, combined, with the fact of its prominent location at the entrance of the downtown, the design of the building and the site, will have a

Landscaping is prop os ed around t he grounds of the hotel to buffer the parking from Berwick on the north side, to create an entrance feature to the west along Shoppers Row, and to form a mini-plaza fronting onto the Island Highway to the east.

Brooks said it’s hoped the hotel will also help weed out known criminal activity in the area.

“The area behind Tyee Plaza is known for congregation and nefarious activity,” he said. “The

applicant responded by locating lighting and landscaping to reduce the potential for illegal activity.”

City staff were recommending coun cil approve the major development permit for the hotel at its Tuesday night council meeting which took place after the Mirror went to press.

This most recent development proposal adds to a growing list of new construction projects in the city which includes Berwick seniors home (across from McDonald’s and

beside Banners Restaurant), Rose Harbour women’s shelter (bottom of Dogwood Street hill), the new Seymour Pacific headquarters (St. Ann’s block), the shopping mall at Hilchey and Dogwood, and an expansion to the complex across from Discovery Harbour which includes Boston Pizza, White Spot, Tim Horton’s and Wendy’s.

The addition will be built in the gravel pit in between Boston Pizza and Wendy’s and will include a Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Haig-Brown carving to be unveiled COMMUNITY

Everyone is invited to spend a fun afternoon on Father’s Day, outside River Sportsman and ‘between the bridges’ alongside the Campbell River, our BC Heritage River.

At 2 p.m. there is a special unveiling of a life size wood carving commissioned by River Sportsman, recently completed by Max Chickite.

Haig-Brown family members will be in attendance to view this tribute to their father and the everlasting legacy he left as “one of the world’s greatest conservationists and anglers.”

Men’s health has been called a silent crisis. Many statistics point to problems with men’s health, including that men are generally expected to live 5 years less than women. Experts say that a key concern is that men’s health often is ignored by men themselves.

According to the Centre for Disease Control, men are 100% less likely to visit a doctor for preventative services.

Why don’t men take better care of themselves? Leaders in men’s health point to social attitudes that “big boys don’t cry.” Men

learn to ignore pain, stress and emotional upheaval. This can take a toll on not only a man’s life expectancy, but also his quality of life and the quality of life of those around them.

What can be done? Eating right, getting exercise, making time for relaxation, and connecting with others can all help put things more in balance. Many physical health conditions can be prevented or detected early with regular checkups. Counselling can also be helpful when it comes to finding ways to make difficult

changes or for mental health support in general.

Campbell River has one of the only non-profit agencies in B.C. that offers subsidized professional counselling for men who have experienced a trauma or any form of abuse, including emotional abuse and neglect. The North Island Survivors’ Healing Society currently has counselling spaces available in its men’s program. For more information or to make an appointment, call 250-287-3325. Campbell River area residents asked to rally behind national Blood Donor Week

Canadian Blood Services is asking Canadians to get Behind the Blood Signal when the blood drop shaped icon is activated during National Blood Donor Week, June 10 to 16.

The Blood Signal is intended to connect people to the idea of making a donation at specific times of the year when the need for blood is greatest—like summer. Behind the Blood Signal was chosen as this year’s theme for National Blood Donor Week to educate more Canadians that when they see the Blood Signal, it means ‘give blood now’.

Throughout National Blood Donor Week, Canadian Blood Services is also asking Canadians to “go social” in supporting the Blood Signal by: n Visiting Mosaic Me at http://www.mosaicme.ca/. Individuals can post pictures of themselves donating, promoting or otherwise supporting patients through blood donation that will form in the shape of the Blood Signal. n Checking out www. facebook.com/CanadianBloodServices for the launch of a new Behind the Blood Signal video.

“During National Blood Donor Week, make a plan to get behind the Blood Signal, because hospital patients in this community rely on your generosity,” said Chris Barron, partnership specialist with Canadian Blood Services. “The Blood Signal is intended to connect people to the idea of giving blood, rallying people in their communities to come together and save lives.”

This year, patients at more than 400 hospitals nationwide and 86 hospitals in the B.C. and Yukon region are depending on blood donors to help save or improve their lives from trauma, disease and other illness. In 201213, Canadian Blood Services shipped more than 137,000 units of red blood cells, blood

plasma or platelets to B.C. hospitals to help meet patients’ needs.

Donors who give blood during Blood Signal are eligible to give again at the beginning of August. To book an appointment, go online to www.blood.ca or call 1 888 2 DONATE (1-888-236-6283). Making an appointment now will help lay the foundation for strong blood collections this summer.

It occurs Dr. Peter on vegetation in warm, moist areas on Woodward Vancouver Island.The red and black females and smaller black males attach to humans, deer, cats and dogs, becoming grey and bean-like in size as they feed.The bite is often painful and may result in a slow-healing ulcer.This tick species is a carrier of the microorganism responsible for Lyme Disease in North America.The organism which causes Lyme Disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, has been found in ticks collected from many areas of B.C. over the last 6-8 years, and health authorities now believe that Lyme Disease carrying ticks may be present throughout the province. Plants in your Pond

Our ponds are starting to BLOOM with splashes of colour! Yellow or White Marsh Marigolds combined with a Dwarf Iris in Purple or Blue give you an early shot of color. Marginals come in short and tall, and sit submerged but not at the bottom of the pond.

Aquatic Lilies can be added anytime and EVERY year you get a bigger plant with more blooms… you purchase it once and it keeps on giving year after year. For a smaller pond, Sarah Kirk, Owner the Floating Heart or Water Hawthorne makes a nice plant for the bottom of the pond. Both plants can be added in the spring and also will get bigger and more blooms every year.

Floating plants combined with Lily leaves provide your pond with less sun exposure which leads to less algae. Also your fish are less likely to be spotted by a hungry Heron. Water Hyacinth, a common floating plant that has gorgeous purple blooms is for your sunny pond. The more Water Hyacinth, the better chance they will bloom; OVERCROWD them! Water Lettuce is a great floating plant for the shady pond, as it doesn’t tolerate full sun.

Duckweed, Salvinia and Frogbit are excellent small floating plants that help to cover the pond and provide tasty snacks for the fish. Most floating plants are annuals.

Remember with plants, we don’t add them just to be pretty, but they serve many functions as well.

Pursuant to Section 26 of the Community Charter Take notice that the City of Campbell River (the “City”) proposes to dispose of the lands legally described as follows: Those portions of Lot A, Campbell River Indian Reserve #11, Plan VIP58923, except part in Plan VIP59470, Sayward District, that are outlined and shown as “Lot 3” on Plan VIP89432 (the “Land”) The City proposes to transfer the fee simple interest in the Land to the Campbell River Indian Band, also known as the Wei Wai Kum First Nation, through Wei Wai Kum’s economic development corporation, Discovery Harbour Holdings Ltd. The Land will then be transferred to Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada for the purpose of adding the Land to Campbell River Indian Reserve #11. In consideration for the proposed transfer, the City will receive: 1. A permit under section 28 of the Indian Act to use and occupy the Land and other lands on the Reserve for the purpose of a sewage pump station and sewerage works;

Public invited to unveiling of fascinating art installation at CR Art Gallery

Garden and art tour features recycled art to learn waste reduction and green gardening tips on tour days, with the added bonus of recycled art placed throughout the grounds. The centre is located near the corner of Dogwood Street and Pinecrest Road (on St. Peter’s Anglican Church property).

There will be something for everyone on this year’s tour – which features gardens from north Campbell River all the way down to Black Creek. McCavour, who will present an illustrated lecture at the June 13 opening, has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University and has completed artist residences at numerous studios and institutes. Her embroidered installations seem ghostly and lacelike, as they are suspended in mid-air.

She presents everything from rooms in her childhood home to imagined floral displays. Thread – a seemingly fragile material

– becomes an incredibly strong medium. Staff and volunteers at the Campbell River Art Gallery and exhibition sponsor, Denise Mitchell Interiors, look forward to welcoming the public to meet McCavour and hear her speak.

The compost experts at the Comox Strathcona Waste Management’s Compost Education Centre have been taking green ideas to a whole new level with their creation of recycled art.

The Campbell River Art Gallery’s Garden and Art Tour, with 12 gardens open to the public on the weekend of June 22 and June 23, offers something for everyone who loves beauty in the garden. At the Compost Education Centre, educators Elaine Jansen and Gayle Bates know that more and more people are embracing environmentally-aware gardening – and they’ve taken that approach a step further by taking items that were slated for the dump and turning them into art.

“We’re taking things that have reached the end of their useful life and were headed for the landfill and we’ve created pieces of art – some for whimsy and some for practical purposes,” Bates said.

Hundreds pack Maritime Heritage Centre and fishing pier to celebrate Ocean’s Day under cloudy, grey skies Campbell Riverites congregated near the pier and Maritime Heritage Centre parking lot to mark World Ocean’s Day – a day to remember the life-giving role of oceans. The day has been celebrated internationally since 1992. In Campbell River, the BC Salmon Farmers hosted the event which included ocean exhibits, salmon print making, face painting, live music, and food vendors. The day also coincided with the opening of the new aquarium.

Campbell River Synchro Swim Club wrapped up their 2012-2013 Season with their year end Synchro Show on Saturday June 1, after an excellent showing at the Jean Peters Provincial Meet held in Saanich Commonwealth Pool May 24-26 .

The Junior Competitive team, affectionally known as the “Babes” placed 6th in the level 2, 13 and under category. Their routine was performed to the theme of Super Heros.

The junior team consisted of Megan Hancock, Olive Marie Holling, Sidney Demuth and Anna Pehrsson.

The Senior Team, affectionately called the BOS, took home a Silver medal for their performance to a compilation of music with the theme Stronger.

The BOS team is comprised of Breanna Massey, Olivia Wharton, Rachel Enns, Raya Jordan, and Devon Rodgers.

Breanna Massey also competed in the Solo Category for Level 3, and placed 5th place provincially.

Excellent results girls ! The whole team, including Recreational swimmers and Aqua Giggles, showcased their skills at the Strathcona Gardens Pool on Saturday June 1. Thanks to a new on deck music system and underwater speaker which was purchased with the support Coastal Community Credit Union, and supplied by Madman McKays.

Although the season is finished the swimmers are eagerly looking forward to another exciting season, which will commence September after Labour Day. Anyone interested in the club should email the club at : crsychroswimclub@gmail.com

A surprise visit from the Old Time Racing Association highlighted a great night of racing at Saratoga Speedway on Saturday.

The Bombers, Motorcycles, I.M.C.A Modifieds and the Dwarf cars, who were making their first appearance of the year, were also on the card on Saturday.

Due to dark clouds looming over the track, only two heat races and one main event were given to all fields.

In the Motorcycle division, Jim Deas had an amazing night, setting fast time in qualifying, winning both heats, and leading all 12 laps of their main event to take a clean sweep.

Gregg Sagmoen also had a great night in the I.M.C.A Modified division. Sagmoen won both of their heats, but fell short in the main event, loosing his lead late in the race to Rory Smith, who was racing Modifieds for the first time. Sagmoen’s great night moved him from last in the points race to first in the blink of an eye.

Stewart Lee continued his main event dominance in the Bomber car class. After some early struggles, he found his way in the main event, taking over the lead from Brian Baltis on lap 19 of 25, and he wouldn’t look back from there, winning his second straight main event of the year, and furthering his points lead over the rest of the pack.

Eleven Dwarf cars took to the track for their first race night of the year. After a few cars broke down early, we were left with nine cars for the 25 lap main event. Jim Meeres dominated the main event, taking the lead on lap 1 and never looking back from there. #32 Ryan Orchard would pressure Meeres late but he couldn’t find a way around the seasoned vet. The Old Time Racing Association was a last minute addition to the field, but even on short notice they put on a great display of racing. 20 laps were given for their main event; #22 Larry Joyce, #11 Duane Zeinstra and #35 Kail Beck all raced bumper to bumper, with Joyce holding on to the lead for the first half. However on lap 18, Zeinstra would finally find his way around Joyce, taking home the first main event of the year for the Old Timers. Beck also found his way around Joyce, taking home second, with Joyce falling to third.

The Subway Pee Wee Ravens walked away this weekend with two more wins in league action.

On Saturday, the team traveled to Duncan to take on the Cowichan Valley Bull Dogs. The

Young Campbell River amputee helps mark War Amps 95th anniversary Garrett Warkentin, 5, of Campbell River, is back from The War Amps 2013 BC Child Amputee (CHAMP)

The seminar brought together child amputees from across the province while also honouring the

Born a left arm amputee, Warkentin attended the three-day seminar, which included the latest developments in artificial limbs, parenting an amputee child and dealing with teasing and bullying.

Warkentin also participated in the Play and Learn session at the seminar where young Champs interacted with each other while their parents had the opportunity to exchange tips and share experiences.

A highlight at the seminar was the Amputees in Action session, where Champs demonstrated their standard and recreational artificial limbs and devices to the group.

Warkentin showed his artificial arm.

He was also presented with a CHAMP Ambassador Certificate for conducting an Amputation Awareness Presentation at his school.

CHAMP is funded solely through public support of The War Amps Key Tag and Address Label Service.

54 RCSCC Admiral DeWolf cadets conduct annual ceremonial review The sun shone on the 58th Annual Ceremonial Review of 54 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps, Admiral DeWolf, held Sunday, June 2 at the Navy League Hall on 13th Avenue.

Spectators and distinguished guests were treated to a parade and march-past followed by static displays of the many activities and skills the cadets have been developing over the past training year. These activities range from basic knots and naval terminology through to sailing and outdoor adventure training. Other, more intangible, skills learned by the cadets include leadership and how to show and earn respect.

The cadets were inspected by Reviewing Officer and former

Commanding Officer of Admiral DeWolf, LCdr(Ret.) Colin Barton. There were several esteemed guests also present at the parade, including: Campbell River Mayor, Walter Jakeway; Area Cadet Officer, Lt(N) Joe Guerin; Vice President of Sea Cadets for the Vancouver Island Division of the Navy League of Canada, Mike Dietrich; Lt(N) Jake Everitt of HMCS Quadra in Comox; Royal Canadian Legion Parade Marshall, Mr Sean Smith; and S/Lt Evan Roberts, a former Chief Cadet of Admiral DeWolf, now serving in the Royal Canadian Navy in Halifax.

Special awards of recognition and promotions were handed out by the VIP guests and by the

ship’s officers.

The afternoon was capped off by a wonderful potluck supper, prepared by parents and the Navy League, and also included the presentation of the Corps annual awards.

The Commanding Officer, Lt(N) Bonnie McGill, and Navy League Branch President, Greg Askey, would like to thank the guests and all the parents of the cadets for making the day’s events such a huge success.

Bravo Zulu (the naval term for “well done”) to all the cadets who received awards and promotions.

May they have continued success this summer as they head to HMCS Quadra in Comox for further cadet training.

Turkey vultures have some pretty disgusting habits It is always rewarding when we can successfully rehabilitate wildlife patients as many of the cases admitted to Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS) wildlife center are beyond help by the time they arrive.

Last week saw the return of two patients that were rescued and have spent almost a year in captivity. Initially both birds were treated for their injuries and then sent to O.W.L., another wildlife center in Ladner where they spent several months rebuilding their strength and flight muscles in large flight pens.

Turkey vultures are not regular guests at MARS which is fortunate as some of their eating habits are quite gross to watch. These vultures are a common sight in the early summer skies as they soar on the air currents keeping a nose out for their dinner.

Often mistaken for bald eagles, vultures are actually members of the stork family. They were known to the Cherokee First Nations as “peace eagles” which was a reflection of their non aggressive nature, they have neither talons nor a hooked beak capable of killing or tearing apart prey. In fact, they do not kill their prey at all.

The turkey vultures main diet consists of meat from mammals or fish and they do also eat vegetation.

These birds have an extremely efficient digestive system which protects them from catching any disease the rotting food may carry.

Sometimes known as “sanitizers of the desert,” once the food is digested their waste material is sterilized and free from diseases.

In order to detect their food, they rely on an enhanced sense of smell and can locate the rotting food by detecting gasses released by the decaying meat.

Their keen sense of smell is due to the design of their nostrils, instead of two nostril openings the turkey vulture has one large hole that passes through the top of the beak. Similar in size to an eagle, they do not have a white head or tail.

Their heads are

unmistakable. On closer inspection their heads are covered with red wrinkled skin.

A featherless head is thought to have evolved in order to prevent feather rot a condition that occurs when feathers collect food particles and cannot be preened clean.

Vultures feed by putting their heads inside the carcass which would definitely result in feather rot.

When seen in flight it is difficult to determine the eagle from the vulture. An easy way to tell is by the way they hold their wings when soaring on the air currents.

Eighth annual Swing for Charity was a big success

The Campbell River Community Foundation’s annual golf tournament was held at Storey Creek Golf Course on May 31. To say a good time was had by all would be a cliche but it would be true. The event treated golfers to an amazing set of hole sponsors and volunteers and a spectacle of challenges, laughter and plenty of fun. Throughout the entire day on the course golfers were served snacks, beverages and a full lunch brought to them on course. The day also included a stunning, four-course dinner and auction with the theme “All that Jazz; Go Glitzy.”

Boyd’s Funeral Home hosted a killer stop along the way with a coffin “bar” complete with Skull vodka.

The Chan Nowasad Boates hole was a popular spot where good cheer was the order of the day. Enjoying that cheer were Ken Nelson, Shelly Boates, Dean Boates, Kelsey Anderberg and Ray Collins.

Judith and Victor Choo are enthusiastic community foundation supporters.
