GET ACTIVE, HAVE FUN AND STAY DRY

INDOORS Skate On the ice, Abbotsford has several highquality facilities for hockey and other sports. The twin-rinks facility, Centre Ice located at 3600 Townline Rd., has become the nerve centre of the hockey community. MSA Arena, at 2323 Emerson St., is another popular location, seating 1,000 fans. Abbotsford Recreation Centre boasts an Olympic-sized ice rink which is used for hockey, speed skating and the general public. A second ice rink can be found at the Matsqui Recreation Centre. This rink is NHLsized for the public to enjoy. Swim Matsqui Recreation Centre, located at 3106 Clearbrook Rd., is commonly referred to

as The Wave Pool. This indoor swimming experience has a slide, diving boards, pools, a sauna, hot tub and a shallow beach area where waves crash every 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the Abbotsford Recreation Centre, at 34890 Old Yale Rd., also has a fantastic indoor pool, which offers leisure and adult swims, toonie swims, aqua fitness and more. Rock-climbing When it comes to getting fit and staying active, some are happy to beat a path on the road, or a treadmill. Still there are others looking for a different kind of challenge — a vertical one. They crave that slow and steady climb, fighting gravity every inch of the way. Before you

head out in search of your rocky playground, it’s wise to get a foothold on some training. The folks at Project Climbing Centre understand the need for a challenge, and they’re there to help. They offer courses from beginner to advanced, and provide training in their 9,000-square-foot facility. They also have a full schedule of drop-in times for all ages. Curling abbycurlingclub.com Curling is a true Canadian sport, and Abbotsford has embraced it fully. Our full-time curling facility is home to numerous teams of all ages, from juniors to seniors. The dedicated staff and volunteers at the Abbotsford Curling Club work diligently to foster the development of new and existing players, and are committed to providing playing opportunities even while hosting bonspiels and championships.

AIRSHOW The 50th annual Abbotsford International Airshow will be remembered by many as a success, and for good reason, as it earned the Northwest Council of Airshows’ “Airshow of the Year” for 2012. This August, the aviation festival is back and celebrating 51 years as one of the largest airshows in North America. This is the 70th anniversary of RCAF Station Abbotsford, which was set up as a training base during the Second World War, so this year’s show will be a salute to Canada’s air force, says incoming president of the Abbotsford Airshow, Jim Reith. The show lineup includes military demonstrations by the Canadian Forces, including the CF-18 Hornet, the Snowbirds

and an air-to-ground tactical assault demonstration with Griffon helicopters. Other performances include the Canadian Forces parachute team, the Skyhawks, as well as plenty of explosions and fire with AV8FX Pyrotechnics and The SmokeNThunder jet car that will race the CF-18 Hornet. Vintage demonstrations include the A-1 Skyraider, the P-51 Mustang “Valhalla,” the F7F Tigercat “Bad Kitty,” and many other favourites from the Heritage Flight Museum. The public is also invited to explore the interiors of many Canadian military aircraft, corporate jet displays, and homebuilt and collector aviation examples. For the kids, there is a new interactive Kids’ Zone, aviation school kiosks, lots of concession

stands, souvenir shops and the chance to meet performers at one of the autograph booths. “This is the first time that we’ve had a Kids’ Zone,” says Reith. “Now parents have a place to bring their kids when they get restless, and still be able to watch the show.”

FUN WITH FAMILY

ABBOTSFORD INTERNATIONAL

Reith said he is excited about this year’s event and is ready to begin the next 50 years of shows. The three-day show takes place from Aug. 9-11 at the Abbotsford Airport (30440 Liberator Ave.). Gates and ground displays are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the main flying program running from noon to 5:30 p.m.

New Horizons... Grief can feel like fear but at its best, grief is a transformative process; a long winding path, where any turn in the road can reveal a new horizon. These new horizons are powerful but grieving people can’t reach them if no one is there to help them along the way.
