THE GAME

Power trip 20 local University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) students are competing for fortune, fame and bragging rights with the return of the biggest reality contest from The Abbotsford News. One student will win the grand prize of $5,000 cash, the title of Freshman (formerly the Intern) of the Year and a summer internship with the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) marketing department.

THE CHALLENGE: Twenty UFV students are divided into 10 teams. Each team is associated with a corporate partner in the community. Their challenge was to create a marketing plan, video and a full-page advertisement (to be published in The Abbotsford News Daily) for their sponsor business. All of the team projects can be viewed online at abbynews.com/contests. Teams have also been paired with a local charity and will do their best to raise exposure — making a positive change in our community.

that the teams choose to use! Votes can be entered ten times per day, per IP address, at abbynews.com/contests. However, every contestant has immunity for the first four weeks. The News will track the weekly votes and announce them via Twitter every Thursday at 8 a.m. at twitter.com/abbynews. In the Thursday, June 13th edition of The Abbotsford News there will be a mass elimination of seven teams. Voting for the remaining three teams will continue until Friday, June 21 at 5 pm.

Spring Dos & Don’ts DO INVEST IN A SHORTS SUIT The shorts suit had a major presence on the runway this season. DO consider the length of the shorts when purchasing your suit.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO EMBRACE A BOLDLY COLOURED OR PATTERNED STYLE DON’T FORGET A LITTLE WHITE DRESS DON’T think you can wear a white dress only during the day. DO remember well-fitting foundation garments are a necessity when wearing white.

THE FINALE: Three last teams will be invited to the grand finale at Finnegan’s Pub on Monday, June 24. In a boardroom setting, the judges will take into consideration the votes, the teamwork, the project and the sponsor evaluations. In addition, each contestant will provide an individual pitch as to why he or she should be the Freshman of the Year. There, the winner will be announced and presented with the prize. A twist will coming on the night!

THE ELIMINATION:

WHY VOTE?

Readers will have the opportunity to fire teams daily based on a list of questions and answers completed by the competitors, marketing plan, as well as their full-page advertisement and video. Follow your favourite teams via various social media sites

The contest is based on your votes, which is why we are awarding a grand prize for one person. Following a draw, the winning voter will receive a $1000 shopping trip to Sevenoaks Shopping Centre. Vote online at abbynews.com/contests, vote often!

DO EMBRACE BLACK-AND-WHITE GRAPHIC PRINTS DO think about the size of the print. The smaller they are, the more flattering they’ll be.

DO GET SPORTY DON’T go overboard with the trend, though. DO work bright colours into the equation. Yellows and oranges lend a girly touch to the athletic style.

DON’T SHY AWAY FROM MIXING FLORAL PRINTS DO remember the key to mixing prints is to make sure each pattern is a totally different size. You’ll have quite a strong look if you mix patterns, so DON’T go crazy with wild accessories too.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF A COLOURFUL PURSE DO play with sizes. A bold, oversize clutch for day and a mini cross-body for night are fun accents. DON’T be afraid to invest in this trend. A nice red handbag can match just as many things as a neutral one. <<< DRESS AVAILABLE AT THE BAY

Building your business wardrobe The transition from college student to full-time professional requires a number of changes. Those changes include updating your wardrobe to give it a more professional feel.

without being noticed. Accessories and dress shirts can offer pops of colour when necessary. A nice handbag or pair of shoes can quite easily add colour to an otherwise monotone ensemble. When selecting items from the rack, look for those that fit well but aren’t too constrictive or racy.

What constitutes a professional wardrobe has changed over the years but adding classic, professional pieces to your closet is still recommended. While the rules may not be as strict as they once were, dressing conservatively and cleanly in an office environment is always a safe bet.

DON’T BREAK THE BANK In order to achieve a wardrobe transformation without breaking the bank, the fashion experts advise adding separates to build around a base suit. Find a suit that is flattering to your figure and make it a workplace staple. Then purchase coordinating pants, sweaters, shirts, another skirt, and accessories that can be mixed and matched with elements from the suit to create different looks. If your budget allows, purchase another suit in a different colour so you can continue to build wardrobe possibilities. When selecting base pieces, opt for neutral colours of tan, gray, black, and blue so that these items can be worn repeatedly

hustleforcanuckplace.ca

Many employers have adopted dress-down days as perks for their employees. Although you may be invited to dress more casually, avoid dressing for a day at the beach or hanging around the house. Opt for trouser-style jeans that are free of rips and embellishments. If athletic shoes are allowed, make sure they are clean and not the pair you wear while hiking up Sumas Mountain after a rainstorm. Avoid graphic T-shirts that feature potentially offensive or suggestive messages. In more conservative companies, dressing down may be opting for khakis instead of suits. It is important to know the difference.

BUSINESS LEADER

2013 BC New-Canadian Entrepreneur Award Recipent Jag’s MJM Furniture Showcase Jag Jaswal of Jag’s MJM Furniture Showcase has received the Retail award for the 21st Annual ETHNO BC Council of British Columbia BC NEWCANADIAN ENTREPRENEUR AWARD for 2013. This prestigious award was presented recently to Jag Jaswal owner of Jag’s MJM Furniture Showcase with locations in Abbotsford, Langley, Maple Ridge and Chilliwack. Featured guest at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Vancouver, B.C. was The Hon. Jason Kenney, P.C., M.P. The awards recognize the achievements of successful New-Canadian entrepreneurs who have demonstrated business leadership, innovation and community involvement. This year’s award recognized the leaders in the following businesses: Export, Service, Retail, Manufacturing and Wholesale. Jag’s MJM Furniture has become a household name for furniture shoppers throughout the Lower Mainland since the first store opened its doors in 1987. The company has established itself as a leader in the home furnishings business with its constant approach to staying on top of the latest trends and styles in the market and making customer service an immediate priority. Jag Jaswal immigrated to Canada along with his mother and siblings in 1977. Jag attended high school while also working on the farms picking berries and helping to provide for the family.

After graduating from high school in 1984, Jag got a full time job in the furniture manufacturing industry where he worked for 3 years. In 1987, Jag and his older brother Jeet opened the first MJM store in Surrey, BC with Jag holding a 25% share. Upon opening the store, Jag started doing deliveries and worked his way up over the years, moving into the position of Warehouse Manager, and eventually sales. In 1994, Jag became Store Manager for the second MJM location which opened in Abbotsford. As the company name grew and business flourished, the third MJM location opened its doors in Maple Ridge, BC in 2008. In January of 2011 Jag became 100% owner of the Abbotsford and Maple Ridge locations which now go by Jag’s MJM Furniture. Within two years, Jag has opened three more locations. In 2011 Jag opened his third Jag’s MJM Furniture location in Langley, followed by his fourth location in Chilliwack, in 2012. Earlier this year Jag opened his fifth location and second in Abbotsford under the name Buy-Rite Furniture & Mattresses. Jag’s MJM Furniture continues to grow its brand within the furniture market while offering home furnishings buyers an outstanding experience in selecting the right furniture that matches their décor.
