THE GAME
Win 1,000 to $
Sevenoaks Shopping Centre! 20 local University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) students are competing for fortune, fame and bragging rights with the return of the biggest reality contest from The Abbotsford News (formerly the Intern.) One student will win the grand prize of $5,000 cash, the title of Freshman of the Year and a summer internship with the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) marketing department.
THE CHALLENGE: Twenty UFV students will be divided into 10 teams. Each team is associated with a corporate partner in the community. Their challenge was to create a marketing plan, video and a full-page advertisement (to be published in The Abbotsford News Daily) for their sponsor business. All of the team projects can be viewed online at abbynews.com/contests. Teams have also been paired with a local charity and will do their best to raise exposure - making a positive change in our community.
via various social media sites that the teams choose to utilize! Votes can be entered ten times a day, per IP address, at abbynews.com/contests. However, every contestant has immunity for the first four weeks. The News will track the weekly votes and announce them via Twitter every Thursday at 8 a.m. at twitter.com/abbynews. In the Thursday, June 13th edition of The Abbotsford News there will be a mass elimination of seven teams. Voting for the remaining three teams will continue until Friday, June 21 at 5 pm.

We sat down with local entrepreneurs, Ashley Wray and Matt Bateman
Where did you get the idea for starting your business?
What are all your duties as a business owner? Do you do everything or do you delegate?
When we were travelling. We were backpacking and fell in love with this jewelry in Bali. When we were on the plane from Bali to Thailand, the woman who made the jewelry sat down beside us. We loved the jewelry and her story. (She began making the rudraksha bead jewelry after her spiritual guide told her more peace would come to the world if more people were wearing the beads - which was especially needed in the West.) Being from the West, and in an area that is so accepting and supportive of a conscious lifestyle, we were inspired to start the business when we returned home.
One of the best pieces of advice I ever heard was from a Richard Branson book - owner of Virgin. He said to put yourself out of business - take yourself out of the day-to-day processes, hire someone who can do the job in a great way, and allow yourself time to work on the business rather than in the business. While that’s not always an option from the beginning, it’s definitely something to work towards. Looking at the bigger picture should always be something you’re doing, whether or not you’re working on the smaller tasks yourself.
How many hours do you put into your business in a week?
Continual growth. We’re already expanding into the US and UK this year (after just a year in business). We want to continue that growth and see more people wearing our mala beads.
Ha! I don’t know if that’s even scalable. You never turn your business brain off when it’s your own company. Of course, we try to have ‘non-work time,’ but when it’s something you’re passionate about, you are always thinking of ways to grow and improve, and of your next challenge and adventure.
What makes your business unique? We’re fair trade, with our jewelry made in beautiful Bali, Indonesia. The business overall is about reminding people to live a more conscious lifestyle and connecting with their intentions, manifesting their dreams, and feeling good.
What misconceptions did you have about owning a business, prior to?
More than just another pretty faced realtor. DAN KEELEY 604-859-2341 dankeeley.com
LITTLE OAK REALTY
Each office independently owned & operated
r a l l o d
The amount of time it takes to create cash-flow. You’ll get there if you have patience, the right drive and support.
What do you want for your business in 5, 10, 20 years?
What keeps you going? What drives you, gets you excited? The possibilities of what’s next. We would have never dreamed the Oscars gift lounge would be something we’d attend, or that we’d be working with Lululemon. We can’t wait to see what the future holds.
What is the most challenging and rewarding part of owning your business? CHALLENGING - being inside your own head and letting that self doubt creep in. THE MOST REWARDING - seeing people wearing our jewelry, and receiving emails from people sharing how much the jewelry has helped them through challenging times in their lives. The jewelry is a medium for many to live their intentions and manifest their dreams. We love that.

Manure Systems Inc. of Abbotsford, B.C., received a Top 10 Product Innovation Award at the 2011 World Dairy Expo and again in 2012 for it’s Trident Nutrient Technology (TNT) recovery system. The TNT recovery system is a manure management process designed to enable dairy farmers to extract the nutrients on a daily basis from their animal manure. Once nutrients from the manure are captured they are concentrated for processing into fertilizer that can be easily stored for on-farm use or sold.
Barr Plastics’s rainwater harvesting system has been used to make the ice at the AESC for the Abbotsford Heat to play on. The rainwater is harvested on site and used almost daily to keep the ice maintained.
Naked Underwear is founded by Abbotsford local, Joel Primus. Joel, the CEO, has brought the product to the CBC show, Dragons’ Den twice and both times the Dragon’s didn’t take his offer. Joel and his partners have made this underwear company very successful and still stays Abbotsford-run. The product is made with unique fabric from Europe, made to be very soft, like the underwear that the founder found on his travels to South America. Upon coming home, he realized there was nothing like the South American underwear here so he decided to make his own.
