Topham applies for Rowbotham AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter After the death of his lawyer, Arthur Topham, charged with hate crimes, has applied for a Rowbotham.

The term is used in the judicial reprocess when one cannot afford a lawyer, yet their case is serious enough that if convicted the accused could serve jail time.

“Doug was likely the most competent counsel one could have in cases such as these and to try to find a replacement for him has proven to be a tremendous challenge,” Topham said.

“Besides that Doug (Christie) was a very kind and considerate in terms of his fees and even at that I owe his office.”

CHIROPRACTIC HELP

Topham said he was initially denied legal aid as it was determined he made too much per month.

“It appears a person has to be living on the street without a penny to their name in order to qualify for legal aid these days,” Topham said.

Topham added the Rowbotham application was stalled out earlier in May. He now awaits his next court appearance, July 9.

Topham’s property was searched and some seized in May of 2012, after it was determined there were “reasonable grounds the offence of promotion of hatred was committed.”

Crown officially moved forward on the charge about five months after the search and seizure of property.

Topham, who adamantly denies the charge, said back in Novemeber of 2012, he’s hopeful having his day in court will raise awareness surrounding free speech and the definition of “hate crimes.”

“This is not to say that I have full confidence in Canada’s judicial system but it will hopefully give me an opportunity to present the facts and the truth before a judge and jury of my peers; something that would never have happened if the case had been decided by a tribunal,” he said.

Topham’s next court appearance is July 9 in Quesnel provincial court.

If convicted he could spend a maximum of two years in prison.

Weed bust nets 700 plants RCMP busted a substantial weed grow-op along the Barkerville Highway.

May 31 the Quesnel RCMP Drug Section executed a search warrant at a residence in the 2000 block of the Barkerville Highway.

A 700 plant marihuana grow operation was located inside the house and shop.

Two males, 49 and 56 years old respectively, both residents of communities in the lower mainland, were arrested. One male has been released on a promise to appear.

The other male was held on an outstanding warrant from the lower mainland.

Charges will be recommended against both males for production of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, and theft of electricity.

Council hears both sides of pipeline plan DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter At Monday’s delegation and committee of the whole meeting, council heard from both sides of the Northern Gateway debate, hosting presentations by Katrin MacLean, spokesperson for the opposition of the pipeline, as well as Colin Kinsley and Shane Kelly from Enbridge Inc. MacLean presented a report highlighting the risks involved if the Northern Gateway Project moves forward, specifically how the pipeline will affect Quesnel residents.

“A minimum of 164 geological hazards known as geohazards were identified, with 117 occurring in B.C.,” MacLean’s report explained.

“These are geological features that can cause or create potential irreparable damage.”

Of the 117 identified in British Columbia, 36 have been identified in the Interior Plateau.

These are hazards which can potentially cause or create damage and include slides, streams prone to flooding and avalanches.

According to MacLean’s report, the proposed pipeline’s routes would affect six biogeoclimatic zones which include wetlands, forests and

meadows.

“All species of pacific salmon, rainbow trout and other sport fish will be affected on the pipeline route,” MacLean’s report explained.

MacLean also said the proposed pipeline could have an effect on Quesnel, if a spill were to happen.

“Though the pipeline route is a fair distance away, there is a remote chance that if a spill on this part of the route happens, Quesnel could be affected, as was the case in May 1974,” MacLean said.

“That spill created such concern fisheries biologists kept a close eye on it worrying that a major fish kill of the Stuart River sockeye run, which were migrating to the ocean via the Fraser, might take place.”

The report also explained that if a salmon run was destroyed any certain year, it would mean those fish would not be returning to spawn, creating a hardship to species which depend on salmon as food, such as bears and eagles.

Enbridge presents benefits of proposed pipeline from A2

“This is of great concern for British Columbia since much of this proposed pipeline will affect many fish bearing streams either directly or indirectly,” the report said.

“Since much of the route is in remote areas, the response time to set up the equipment to contain the spill will be of grave importance.

“Booms and skimmers will have to be placed into position before the bitumen starts sinking.”

For their part, Enbridge presented to council an overview of what the proposed pipeline could do for the Cariboo.

Their report highlighted the specifics of the proposed pipelines, explaining which safety measures will be put into place.

“Every weld will be inspected during construction,” the report said, adding inspection remote control valves will also be high priority.

One of the biggest concerns with the pipeline is its impact on First Nations communities and land.

However, Enbridge said they are taking those into consideration.

“Route and watercourse crossing selection is based upon engineering and environmental studies and input from Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal communities,” their report explained.

One of the biggest points of Enbridge’s presentation were which benefits would result from the proposed pipeline.

These benefits include $98 billion in tax revenue and $70 billion in income.

Enbridge also said 907,000 person years of employment will be created with the proposed pipeline.

Enbridge listed numerous aboriginal benefits as well, such as: • Environmental safeguards • Equity ownership of 10 per cent • Tax on reserve land • Employment and training Look for updates on the proposed pipeline in your Observer.

But even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can still take advantage of the season by “planting the seeds” for the growth of another valuable piece of property — your investment portfolio.

For starters, both gardeners and investors need to consider the landscape. He is survived by his children: Pat (Randy Eckland), Jayne (Chris Waring), Matthew, Michele (Kevin Davis), Theresa (Richard Williams) and Timothy (Sarah Rose) as well as grandchildren: Sean, Kristin, Brenden, Brian, Elsa, Megan, Bryn, Molly, Fergus, Tyler, Alison, Garrett, Nicholas, Reid, Caitlin and Becca and great grandchildren: Callum, Carter, Ava, Mya, Isaac, Luke, Ryland, Landon, Sumer, Leah, Charlie, Grace, Claire, Hope, Jude, Lily, Norah, Rosalie, Ellexandra, and Juniper.

There will be a funeral mass and celebration of Jim’s life on June 22, 2013 starting at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anne’s Parish Church.

In addition, just as gardeners don’t usually grow only one variety of a flower or one fruit or vegetable, an investor shouldn’t stick with one type of investment vehicle. If you own nothing but aggressive growth stocks, you’ll likely take on too much risk. Conversely, if you are too conservative and invest only in bonds, you’ll probably never achieve the growth you need, and your earnings may not even keep pace with inflation. Instead, think about building a portfolio containing a variety of investments that, when put together, can help you make progress toward your objectives. We call this diversification, and while it can’t guarantee you’ll make a profit or prevent losses, it can be a good strategy to help reduce overall risk.

Another trait exhibited by gardeners and worthy of emulation by investors is patience. If you were dissatisfied with the growth of a plant after just a few days, would you uproot it and put another plant in its place? Probably not.

Instead, you’d nurture the original plant, hoping that, in the long term, it is possible for it to grow.

The same thinking can apply to investments.

Over the short term, your investment choices will fluctuate in price, and sometimes you may be frustrated by what you perceive as the lack of progress. But instead of constantly selling off investments and buying new ones, you’ll likely be better off choosing quality securities and holding them for a period of many years.

Eventually, your efforts may be rewarded.

What else do gardeners do that might be relevant to investors? For one thing, they get rid of weeds that can choke off the growth of flowers or vegetables. As an investor, you too may benefit from occasionally “pruning” your portfolio of those investments that no longer meet your needs, and, in fact, take up space that could otherwise be more profitably used.

That’s why it’s a good idea to review your holdings at least once a year.

So the next time you see some industrious gardeners making something beautiful and productive in their yards, watch them closely.

Their skills and habits might be productively transferred to you as you invest for the future.

Multi-Centre nears $25M commitment

McDonald’s supports Multi-Centre McDonald’s donated $10,000 towards the Multi-Centre, Wednesday. “Supporting our community is a cornerstone at McDonald’s and with the Multi-Centre such an important project we wanted to ensure McDonald’s is able to contribute to the future of sports, arts and entertainment in the North Cariboo,” owner/ operator Stuart Aldred said.

The North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee, consisting of elected officials from the City of Quesnel and the Cariboo Regional District Northern Directors met in Council Chambers Wednesday night to discuss the Multi-Centre project.

Fundraising efforts to date, including funding from the NDI and the province, are close to $25 million.

“Fundraising efforts are really moving forward and we want to keep the momentum,” Mayor Mary Sjostrom said.

“Council believes that building this multi-centre is essential to our community and is dedicated to finding the funds for this project.

Council is on board. We need our multi-centre – please support us.”

The North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee is diligently looking into all options available to the project and will meet again on June 25 to discuss the MultiCentre.

“Thank you to the North Cariboo Multi-Centre Fundraising Committee for their ongoing efforts and dedication to this project,” CRD Vice-Chair Ted Armstrong said.

“It is this type of teamwork that

building communities together is all about. The north Cariboo Regional District Directors feel this is an important project for the future of Quesnel, the north Cariboo and the region as a whole.”

“The Multi-Centre Fundraising Committee is in the midst of a vigorous fundraising campaign and asks that those who do not yet have a piece of the multicentre, come forward,” MultiCentre Fundraising Committee Chair Bernice Heinzelman added.

“We are not done fundraising yet. We believe in the Multi-Centre and hope that the residents of Quesnel, the North Cariboo and the entire region will get on board to support the project in any way they can.”

The North Cariboo Multi-Centre will be a modern facility designed to replace the 62-year-old arena and aging theatre infrastructure.

It will feature a 1,600 seat NHLsized arena, a 450-seat performing arts theatre and accompanying event and assembly area.

ot just another pretty flower is the caption for the vigorous invasive plant program recently launched in the Cariboo.

For those of you not familiar with the term “invasive plant,� it is a nonnative plant species that has the capacity to negatively impact animals, humans and ecosystems.

They are generally free of the natural predators that keep them in check in their native habitats and therefore have a competitive edge over desirable and/or native vegetation. Â There is a growing concern about the spread of invasive plants in the North Cariboo, in particular, horticultural based species.

Elected officials from the City of Quesnel and the Cariboo Regional District’s Northern Directors are in support of an educational campaign to raise awareness about these invasives and to help hinder their spread.

There is a general lack of awareness that some horticultural plants are invasive species and I urge you to seek out the available information and inform yourself of those plants and where to seek help if you do have those plants on your property or in your area.

You can also find out how to dispose of or treat invasive plants once they have been identified.

Detailed information, including a

description of each of the plants, is available through the City’s website at www. quesnel.ca and the Cariboo Regional District’s website at www.cariboord. bc.ca/Services/ InvasivePlants.aspx.

The program mandate is to “operate an invasive plant management program to protect our range and timber lands for the economic and environmental benefit of all British Columbians.

The program follows an integrated pest management approach involving public awareness through education initiatives, chemical control through the application of herbicides, biological control and interagency coordination.�

The top ten invasive species are: Baby’s Breath, Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam, Mountain Bluet, Himalayan Blackberry, English Ivy, Purple Loosestrife, Yellow Flag Iris, Flowering Rush and Common Periwinkle.

Residents need to be knowledgeable about horticultural plants to avoid the introduction and

spread of these invasive species.

Familiarize yourself, your family and your friends about the horticultural invasive plants in your neighbourhood.

You can even find your regional invasive plant committee by calling 1-888-WEEDSBC (1888-933-3722).

The current calendar of events (which may be subject to change) indicates that the invasive plant team will be hosting an open house on Tuesday, June 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the Program Room of the CRD / Quesnel Library and a tour on Wednesday, June 26 at 5:30 p.m.

Those participating in the tour are asked to meet in the City Hall parking lot.

Not surprising

any were surprised Friday when the province announced it could not support the Northern Gateway pipeline proposal as it currently stands.

They shouldn’t have been. The provincial government’s stance Friday is consistent with the position it has been touting since Premier Christy Clark’s ill-fated foray to Alberta last year.

Perhaps what’s surprising is that she meant it.

There was lots of water-cooler talk that since the Liberals won a majority government last month pipelines would get a green light.

It’s not the case.

Environment Minister Terry Lake pointed out that the biggest stumbling block was the fact that Enbridge hasn’t provided answers to questions the province wants answered.

“The (Joint Review Panel) must determine if it is appropriate to grant a certificate for the project as currently proposed on the basis of a promise to do more study and planning after the certificate is granted,” Lake said.

“Our government does not believe that a certificate should be granted before these important questions are answered.”

Kudos to Lake and the provincial government for listening to what the public has been saying about the proposal.

Getting past the rhetoric, the issue of whether to grant a certificate on the “promise to do more study,” is key.

In addition, it certainly leaves the door open for Enbridge. The question is whether it will decide to enter.

Janet Holder, Enbridge Northern Gateway executive vice president western access, said in a press release the five conditions put forward by the province can’t be met until after the Joint Review Panel process is completed, suggesting that what the province is asking for simply can’t be done and that an impasse exists.

However, she added the company looks forward to working with the province to meet the five conditions, suggesting they aren’t quite ready to throw in the towel on a project it has invested millions of dollars in already.

The Northern Gateway project is far from finished.

A second chance at life

avid Branigan started off the new year in the worst possible way: with the police at his door telling him his 22-year-old son, Joshua, had fallen off a cliff and was now in the hospital in critical condition.

“Before the officer even finished his sentence I was running down the road in a panic,” he said.

After arriving at the hospital he was told he couldn’t see Josh because they were working on him.

Based on the information he was given, he went down in a heap, sobbing in anguish, terrified his firstborn child wouldn’t survive the day.

He waited frantically for hours, praying his son would make it through.

Josh remained in a coma for the next 24 days as his family and friends clung to the possibility of a miracle.

If it hadn’t been for Joel and Wendy Black walking their dogs earlier that morning, those three weeks would have been spent grieving his tragic death, rather than praying for his survival.

On A Brighter Note when he was caught up in a mudslide off the eroded Kye Bay Cliffs in Comox Valley and fell over 100 feet to the rocks below.

The Blacks, who had decided to go on a longer walk than usual, found him laying unconscious and all twisted up after their dogs picked up Josh’s scent.

His breathing had slowed down close to zero since his body had been laying in the freezing cold for up to eight hours. Battling hypothermia, he was rushed to the Victoria General Hospital in a helicopter where his massive contusion and broken wrist were treated.

Initial assessments indicated that his brain injury was so severe that he may never come out of his coma, and if he did, he could be unrecognizable.

“After 125 days in the hospital, this horrendous accident has put a huge financial strain on the family,” Leisa said.

“Josh now lives with a life-altering brain injury and since this is Brain Injury Awareness Month, we thought it was the perfect timing to help them somehow.”

On Father’s Day the vessel, now called the Lake Lounge, will set sail at 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in Kelowna, and for as little as $15 each, families can join Josh and his loved ones for some inspiration, karaoke, and fun in the sun as they celebrate the preciousness of life and Josh’s grateful second chance to live it.

the amount of people asking how Josh was doing, David created a Facebook page called the JHB Recovery where he could share Josh’s journey and keep people informed.

“His writing was so emotional and raw, my heart was completely invested,” my Facebook friend Leisa Howell told me about her old acquaintance.

“He quit his job in Comox and put his life on hold to be by his son’s side in Victoria. And then he shared their gripping ordeal with us on Facebook with such honesty and courage, calling in prayer circles and describing a father’s guilt.

He gave other people, who have felt the same, a voice.”

Twenty four days after the accident Josh thrilled his family, friends and the thousands that were following online by coming out of his coma, and was soon reminiscing about the Iristani Princess, a big, beautiful boat in Kelowna he once lived and worked on with his dad in 2006 and 2007.

Quesnel needs oil as much as anywhere else Editor: As discussion and citizen engagement continue over the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline, people are taking a step back and assessing the project in a broader, societal context.

I for one think that’s a positive thing.

In 2010, according to the International Energy Agency, 81 per cent of the world’s primary energy consumption came from fossil fuels.

And the vast majority of our transportation runs on fossil fuels, whether it’s moving people or goods locally or around the world.

Some may advocate simply cutting off the fossil fuel supply overnight (no new pipelines, no tankers, no

oilsands, no fracking).

One hopes we’ll be able to develop technologies that will allow us to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels – but it will take decades for this to happen.

Cutting off fossil fuels now would only result in extreme human hardship given the lack of alternatives.

The fact is we need oil in Quesnel just as much as everywhere else – and we’ll continue to need it for a long time into the future.

In the meantime, the oil has to be moved – safely and securely without a doubt – from where it has been lying for millions of years to where the market demands it.

For that, there are only

a limited number of alternatives: oil can be run through a pipeline, or shipped on rail cars, or loaded onto tanker trucks.

But compared to other modes of transport, pipelines have proven to be the safest means of transporting fuels.

It’s unfortunate that some opponents simply discount the benefits of the oilsands and pipelines to British Columbia and the country, while exaggerating the risks.

But you need to know that Northern Gateway will be one of the largest investments of private capital in B.C. history and will bring huge economic benefits to Quesnel and this province as a whole – including long-term jobs, community development

and projected tax revenues of $1.2 billion.

As a former mayor of Prince George, I can state clearly that B.C.’s north and the northwest coast regions have a long history of industrial development including forestry, mining, electrical transmission and even other pipeline developments.

In fact, much development has occurred through history along the proposed Northern Gateway right-of-way, which follows a route designed to minimize impacts on the area by taking advantage of already disturbed tracts of land.

These alreadydisturbed tracts include forest service roads,

harvested areas, electrical transmission routes and vehicle access routes.

In truth, very few segments of the proposed pipeline will require new rights-of-way through undisturbed forest.

And the Douglas Channel is no stranger to industrial marine traffic – including tankers carrying petrochemicals.

It has a decadeslong history as a safe, deepwater entrance to a port providing strategic advantages for accessing Asian markets.

We should all work together to improve industry’s environmental performance.

We should accept the challenge to reduce our personal reliance on fossil fuels while we recognize

the world will continue to need oil – and pipelines – for the foreseeable future.

Working together with B.C. communities, demanding the best environmental performance possible and understanding the world’s need for oil for everything from transportation to heating, cooking, manufacturing and healthcare, are all reasonable ways to move this province toward a brighter future for all British Columbians.

Our Rivers - The Highways of the Past B

efore roads were well developed in the Cariboo, sternwheelers and their river landings became small communities with stores, corrals, gardens, ranch houses and hay fields.

Many pioneers started their life in the Cariboo at a rough landing such as Fort Alexandria, Dale Landing, Woodpecker and Whites Landing, where the BX and Quesnel riverboats off loaded the family's goods, equipment and stock. From there the search began for a 160-acre pre-emption parcel somewhere in the forested, undeveloped land.

A Sunday drive now can be most interesting while driving down access roads to the Fraser River. South of Quesnel,

Hold and Dale Roads lead to abandoned settlements at the river. North of town, the sternwheelers stopped when flagged down with major stops at Whites landing, Woodpecker, Stoner, Cottonwood Mouth, Canyon Creek and Brownscombe's to name just a few.

The pre-emption of crown land was a huge draw and most of the Fraser's shores were settled over the years when settlement went up from the river to the plateau lands. Agriculture was the occupation of 80 per cent of Canadians in that era, so selfsufficient farming, trapping and gold panning were standard circumstances.

Roads were just trails cut out of the forests to access the 160acre spreads or river landings.

The Grand Trunk Northern Railway (now CNR), opened a huge area by providing access and delivering equipment, supplies and people in the Prince George area.

The Pacific Great Eastern

Railway grade to Prince George created a lot of work and needed cash in 1912.

The project failed and a later attempt in 1921 also failed, although it did reach Quesnel then.

Many, many started work on their land in anticipation of work and markets for their products. Many hung on but many abandoned their places out of desperation.

I have walked for miles along the old PGE grades and found all sorts of evidence of how it was constructed by wheelbarrows and shovels.

The old rail grades served as a rough road for years until a vehicle road was worked on in the 1920s.

W.A.C. Bennett finally got the train to Prince George in 1952

and a land boom developed.

While exploring these roads north of Quesnel, watch for the abandoned rail grades and note where the gravel path uses the old development.

The Quesnel library and the Quesnel Museum have copies of books describing the history of those settlements. They will give you a history book of how, when and who pioneered to develop our rich land by perseverance and darn hard work.

TV ‘Discovers’ Skyfest

Film crew in town for air show to film converging pilots ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter Skyfest - Quesnel’s International Airshow will be welcoming some unusual guests Aug. 3 – 4.

Discovery Channel has contracted Great Pacific Television (GPT) production company to film the airshow at Quesnel Airport.

Discovery Channel is filming a number of airshow pilots for a new series expected to air in March 2014.

“We were looking for locations where several of the characters overlapped and Quesnel was one of those shows,” director Rob Mitchell said.

“I came up with the idea for the series and pitched it to Discovery Channel and they bought the show.

“The show will follow characters around the airshow industry including Donna Flynn the air show boss and the pyro/special effects team led by April Zalesky [will also be at Skyfest] and the rest are flying performers.”

Mitchell is no stranger to flying.

He’s a former Snowbird and currently flies with the Patriots Jet Team out of California.

“I’ve been brainstorming about this type of show for a few years with Great Pacific Television owner Mark Miller and I bring a unique perspective both behind and in front of the camera,” Mitchell said.

“I understand this industry at a very detailed level.

“However, this is the first time airshow performers have been featured in this character-based series.”

He added GPT has done flying travel journal style shows as well as documentaries on various airshow demo teams.

will have two camera crews, production staff and one principal director. He described the series as observational documentary where everything is filmed as it naturally unfolds.

“Nothing will be scripted,” he said.

Mitchell also said with this being the first season, staying in the west helps with logistics.

“We need to get a good cross section of air shows, big and small. It costs a lot of money to make television and that’s why we carefully select our locations – we can’t possibly go to every show.

Quesnel is a great choice because several of the characters will be there and the airport in Quesnel is a good venue to conduct an airshow.

One of the elements of this series is to show the background and complexities of bring an airshow to the audience.”

But filming a live event poses certain challenges and Mitchell said the first of many is doing what they need to to do while the performers are safely doing what they need to do.

have to ensure we get out of the way when the pilots need to work alone.”

As the weather is typically hot and dry at the time of Quesnel’s Skyfest, Mitchell said another challenge for the crew is lugging heavy equipment around and staying out in the blazing sun for long periods of time.

When asked if Quesnel would feature in the series, Mitchell said the context of the location will be involved in the program.

“If there’s something that relates to the characters regionally it will be highlighted when focusing on the characters involved.”

He went on to say the GPT crews will arrive July 31 and remain in Quesnel until Aug. 5.

“In truth, we’re

trying to keep our footprint at the event low so we don’t interfere with the show. We keep a low profile and are not obvious to the performers.”

As for the success of the series, Mitchell said the subject matter (air show pilots) has a built in audience given that about 10 million people attend air shows each year.

“Unlike many other shows where interesting people are doing difficult jobs,

this show has the built in audience so viewership is already there. But our job is to deliver compelling stories with good characters and vivid imagery.”

A.l. patchett & sons mill Destroyed by fire

“Fire completely destroyed the A.L. Patchett & Sons Ltd. Sawmill on the Blackwater Road last Friday afternoon. The blaze broke out about 1:30 p.m. and employees at the spot were unable to check the swift advance of the flames. The mill was valued at approximately $60,000 and it was covered by insurance. Workmen were busy putting the plant in shape to resume operations after a shutdown for break-up. The mill was due to go back into production Monday. In addition to the mill itself, a Jeep and tools belonging to Stan Rye were also lost in the fire. Mr. Rye is a company Millwright who was in charge of the annual spring overhaul. Cause of the fire has not been definitely ascertained but it is believed it might have been started from a welding torch. Plans for replacing the unit are still indefinite. Instead of a permanent type installation, a portable mill may be put into operation to provide more flexibility in the company’s cutting schedule.”

The father heart of God S

everal summers ago I witnessed every parent’s nightmare.

As I looked out my livingroom I noticed a neighbour, a man, acting rather strangely.

A barely disguised look of terror was on his face as he walked the street, scanning back and forth between cars, front yards and backyards. I could see him talking Pastor John Nicholson nervously to other Northstar Baptist Church neighbours.

When he came and knocked on my door I learned that he’d lost his little girl. The family thought she was playing with other kids a few houses down, but when he went to fetch her he learned she had vanished.

I felt his fear in my own heart as I imagine my little one alone and at the mercy of strangers – even on my own street. I empathized with the man and started praying for the safe return of his daughter.

It wasn’t long before many parents on the street were out looking for the little girl.

The father was by far the most energetic searcher. Within a few minutes he disappeared down the street.

Much to our relief, the little lost girl was found about 20 minutes later. She had gone inside a friend’s house and was playing downstairs, playing and completely clueless of the search in progress.

As I reflect on that event, I find that God is a lot like that father. He yearns for his estranged creatures to enter into His family. He longs for the wanderers to come home. Your heavenly Father’s heart beats for lost people.

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.” (Luke 19:10) In His day, Jesus earned a reputation as a “friend of sinners.” He spent time with them.

He dined with them. He healed them. He encouraged them.

Not just the small time sinner. Jesus hung out with the worst of the worst. He had the audacity to “break the rules” to seek and save the lost. He did not require them to come to Him. He went to the places where they could be found – the marketplaces, street corners and their homes.

The fact is that your heavenly Father values lost people. He takes the time and effort to orchestrate all of history so that they find Him. He rejoices when they come home. If your heart beats like the Father’s, you’ll love lost people too.

Feats of strength and endurance Symbiosis between man and machine JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter You could hear the wail of the dirtbike long before you saw the flashes of yellows, oranges or reds through the pine trees. It gave you warning to stop talking and find a place protected from the inevitably thrown clods of dirt before the rider, sometimes literally, flies into view and then out again.

Riders were out on the course for up to four hours Saturday at the Outback Bushwack crosscountry race June 1.

The top five classes, or "A" riders, race on a 29 km loop for three to four hours, while the bottom six classes, or "B" riders, race on a 17 km loop for two to three hours.

“These loops are full of natural obstacles that test a racer’s mental and physical endurance,” one of the race organizers, Tim Barker said.

“Winners get a trophy and bragging rights.”

The trails, which had been slightly changed due to environmental concerns, were difficult enough “It was pretty fantastic,” Hixon rider Blake Stitt said.

“The rain made it pretty slippery.

It was rooty and muddy and slippery.”

And when he says endurance, it really means something. Both riders and bikes go through a lot to make it through the loop even once.

and then done, they come out, and here you’re out there for three or four hours. You get the motocrossers that come out and they either don’t finish or if they do finish they’re like ‘that’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” he said.

Two local riders and a closeenough-to-local rider made their impacts on the podium.

Quesnel’s Brad Dunn took first in vet expert. Jared Lucas, also of Quesnel, took second in junior over. Hixon’s Blake Stitt took third in intermediate.

The race brought 82 racers from Rossland to Vancouver to Pouse Coupe to Quesnel. It was a good turnout for the race and Barker said running the race earlier had a lot to do with that.

“We’ve always done our race late summer/early fall. The problem with that is last year we had a small turnout,” Barker said.

With the results for bragging rights and points, at the end of the season riders would often skip, he said.

“You only get the guys who are hardcore or who are still hunting for points. So we made the decision to bump the race up earlier in the year,” he said.

After the race, the area cleared out as riders and support crew made their way to Williams Lake for the second race of the weekend.

Barker also stressed that though the motorcycle club takes care of Hangman’s recreational trails, 20 kms west of town, they are open to everybody, whether they’re on the back of a machine or moving courtesy of their own two feet.

Prince George track chews up Quesnel Riders This past weekend is one that will be remembered and talked about for years to come for some of the motocross racers from Quesnel.

Despite our Cariboo weather bringing on the heat and followed by thunderstorms, Quesnel racers attended rounds nine and ten in the BCMA motocross races in Prince George.

The P.G. track put all our racers to the test. As one spectator quoted saying, “It sure chewed up the Quesnel riders.”

That did not stop Colton Shepherd however, claiming five out of eight hole

shots and didn't stop Jackson Nickolet from taking home an overall first place trophy in School Boy, followed by Colton Shepherd who gave Jackson a battle to the very finish.

Shepherd held on to first place until his last lap, when he went down allowing Nickolet to pull ahead and take the lead.

It was a fast and furious battle the entire race on Sunday.

This came after Saturday's race when Shepherd's bike slid out from under him and sent him flying through the air,

crashing hard and finishing him off for the day, but he recuperated in time to put on the challenge of the weekend for Sunday.

Quesnel racer Jordy Davis also performed like never before on Saturday in the Int. MX 3 class, taking a first overall.

Sunday, however, took a turn for Davis when things went terribly wrong over a jump, planting Davis to the ground and leaving him momentarily unconscious on the track.

After being examined at the hospital,

Davis was found to have suffered a severe concussion forcing him to take the next several weeks off.

The same went for another Quesnel racer, Jordan Brears.

On Saturday, Brears flipped several times coming down a long hill known as the elevator and suffered a concussion from the accident.

The Ogopogo Invitational

Kicking it in Kispiox Riders took on ornery cattle and bucking horses at the 66th annual Kispiox Valley Rodeo last weekend.

Jared Marshall of Prince George rode to the top spot sans saddle in bareback. Local Christoph Muigg took second, followed by Quesnel resident Steve Hohmann in third.

In tie-down roping, Houston's Kyle Bell took first. Wade McNolty, of 150 Mile House, took second in the category.

Hohmann was the only rider to keep in the saddle in saddle bronc, earning him the top spot.

Merritt's Grant Fosbery was the best steer wrestler over the weekend. Wade McNolty of 150 Mile House took second, with Cole Scott, of Kamloops, rounding out the top three.

Vanderhoof's Charlie Soffel took first in breakaway roping, followed by Jody Cole of Quesnel in second. Houston's Kyle Bell rounded out the top three.

McKenzie Wills, of Quesnel, took first for the jr. breakaway ropers. Bell increased his place amongst the juniors, taking second, followed by Vanderhoof's Cole Spiers in third.

In ladies barrel racing, Kamloops' Laura Jones took

first, followed by Sarah Gerard of Savona in second and Prince George's Melanie Beeton in third.

For the junior barrel racers, Callei Hume of Williams Lake to the top honours. Wills took second and Marriah Mannering of Quesnel rounded out the top three.

Bell took his third top three finish of the weekend, and his first first, in junior steer riding.

Kamloops' Jackson Scott took second, followed by Isiah Elkins of Quesnel in third.

In team roping, Ryan McNaughton of Quesnel and Rod Spiers of Ft. St. John teamed up to take first. Charlie Soffel of Vanderhoof and John Hancock of Quesnel tied with Nick Texierra and Rod Spiers, both of Ft. St. John for 2/3.

Quesnel's Lane Cork managed to keep his seat on Paleface to take first in bull riding.

Savona's Elly Farmerwas the fastest of the peewee barrel racers, earning her a first place finish.

Riley Becer of Vanderhoof took second, followed by Williams Lake's Brianna Billy in third.

Next up on the rodeo schedule is the Ashcroft and District Stampede.

Athletes from all over Western Canada were in attendance including Edmonton, Calgary, the lower mainland, P.G. and Quesnel were in Kelowna to compete in the Ogopogo Invitational last weekend.

"There was some tough competition out there for the women," president of the club, Judy Vahaaho said.

Quesnel Technics Gymnastic Club members held up well against the crowds of competitors, representing Quesnel well.

Presley Kitamura competed against 19 athletes in provincial level one argo and shone on floor with a tie for second place. She also received fourth on beam, sixth on bars and fourth all-around.

Sierra Moore competed against 17 other athletes in provincial level one tyro and tied for seventh on beam.

Celina DeRose also competed in provincial level one, but in the novice age category and tied for second on floor and sixth place on beam, bars, vault and all-around.

Quesnel's provincial level two tyro athletes had some pretty stiff competition with Alyssa Schnieder and Emily Gorder competing against 27 other athletes. Emily Gorder tied for eighth place on beam.

Jessica Higgins competed provincial level three tyro and placed third on bars and sixth on floor with 14 other athletes.

Buck Lake Ranch’s 1350 lb. cows brought 74.25, the younger feeder cows weighed 1108 lb. and brought 78.75. Simon & Pamela Shaw’s 1565 lb. cows traded to 74.50. Floyd Spears 1260 lb. butcher cows traded to 76.50. Will Andrews 660 lb. Red heifers rolled to 128.00, the 700 lb. steers sold to 130.00.

Correlieu and QJS athletes found personal success in Langley last weekend, competing in the track and field provincials and finding that extra bit of punch to push their performances forward.

“Everyone did well, all improved and achieved personal bests,” Correlieu track coach Pat Marsh said.

Grade 11 Correlieu student Brayden McCall just missed a ribbon, placing ninth overall in men’s javelin.

Konrad Teetzen ran faster than he had before beating his best time in 200m and 400m.

Katrina MacLean beat her best in both the 1500m and 800m.

For the QJS students, Cole Dinsdale placed 18th in the 800m run with a personal best time of 2:12 min. Justin MacDonald placed 11th in the 100m hurdles, running a consistent 17.37 seconds. Christina Lawrence competed against senior level athletes in the Javelin. She placed 15th with a personal best throw of 28.62m.

Correlieu’s Katelyn Godsoe and James Olauson, who had qualified for provincials, could not attend, while QJS’s Olivia Baptiste got ill before the competition and couldn’t make the trip.

Up next for all Correlieu and QJS athletes is the Spruce Capital Track meet in Prince George this coming Saturday and Sunday.

Athletes eight years-old to masters will be competing. Any elementary school athletes interested can register with P.G. Track.

QTGC in Kelowna from A17 Madison Moore had some really tough competition with 17 other athletes all in her session for Provincial level three tyro.

In the men's events, Isaac Woollends performed in level one and walked away with gold on pommel horse, rings and vault and Silver on floor, parallel bars, horizontal bars and allaround.

Haley Lattman was unable to compete in Provincial level one argo as she injured her foot an hour before she was to start.

"As the last meet of the season for the Quesnel Competitive team it was a successful meet for everyone," Vahaaho said.

Rodeo High High school students from around the province have converged on Alex Fraser Park to compete in the B.C. High School Rodeo Finals for the first time in Quesnel. The event covers everything from cutting to barrel racing and every thing in between. If you’ve missed the first half, there’s still a lot of action to go before the awards ceremony.

Smile, it’s race season The new, and happiest car in the field, cavalier races around the track to dry the surface in an effort to make the oval raceable last Sunday.

The QARA nearly wasn’t able to host its first race as scheduled as the rain hit as the cars were set to start qualifying. The drivers and fans waited the rain out, then hit the track .

Family matters from A16 The Watson family, dad Brian and sons, raced this weekend, with Brian taking home a second place trophy on Saturday in the plus 40 class and a first place in the vet jr. on Sunday. His sons Austin and Haiden also raced, with Austin earning a first and third place finish in the 12 - 16 age group in the 85cc and Haiden finishing fourth overall in Schoolboy, each on Sunday.

Racing came to abrupt end for Jacob Nestel from Quesnel on Sunday while he was racing in the 85cc class 7 - 11 age group. Nestel rounded a corner, went off the track and fell down the bank into a deep water pond. With the bike fully submerged, officials and nearby spectators scrambled to his rescue, pulling Nestel from the pond. Later, volunteers went into the pond, tying a fire hose to the submerged bike so it could be retrieved.

Once the racing was all done I had to ask one of our injured racers, "Does this make you think you may be done with motocross racing?" To my surprise, the answer was "No way."

Next weekend racers we'll be off to Kamloops for more BCMA racing on Saturday and to attend the Monster Energy Pro Nationals on Sunday.

FORESTRY SUPERVISOR As Forestry Supervisor, you will be working with the Woodlands team in the administration and supervision of Dunkleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s harvesting program. Responsibilities will include timber reconnaissance and development, permit acquisition, operational planning and management of harvesting activities, such as logging, road construction and road maintenance.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate: â&#x20AC;˘ registration or eligibility for registration as a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT), Forester in training (FIT) or Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with the Association of BC Forestry Professional (ABCFP); â&#x20AC;˘ a minimum of 2 yearsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; experience in forestry fieldwork; â&#x20AC;˘ strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office; â&#x20AC;˘ knowledge of current BC forest legislation, regulations, policies, and guidelines; â&#x20AC;˘ possession of a valid Class 5 driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s licence and safe driving record; â&#x20AC;˘ excellent problem solving, decision making and organizational abilities; â&#x20AC;˘ excellent verbal communication and technical writing skills; â&#x20AC;˘ the ability to work independently and within a team environment.
