Contaminated soil coming to Highlands Charla Huber News staff

Contaminated sediment from the Esquimalt Graving Dock Waterlot will be laid to rest in Highlands.

The sediment is being removed from the graving dock on the north shore of Esquimalt Harbour, as part of a remediation project to bring the area back up to federal and provincial standards.

“Historical ship repair activities at the facility were ongoing before current environmental standards were in place, and have resulted in contamination of the seabed around the facility,” said David Latoski, interim director of EGD in a letter to Highlands council.

About 150,000 cubic metres of contaminated sediment will make its way to Highwest Landfill on Millstream Road starting June 17.

“Potential short-term impacts on neighbouring communities include noise from construction and increased marine traffic,” wrote Latoski. The sediment will be moved by barge to a private facility on David Street then trucked to Highlands.

“I really felt this would be alarming to the community,” said Highlands Mayor Jane Mendum, explaining her first reaction to the news. “Almost the whole community is dependant on groundwater.”

Highlands completed its ground water study this year. It took three phases over several years including researching the aquifers, quality and quantity of ground water and learning how to protecting it.

Tervita Corporation operates Highwest Landfill which is licensed and regulated by the provincial government.

A young Saanich couple went to police for help last Sunday after finding their lost dog was up for sale on an online classified site.

After having no luck checking with the SPCA or the animal pound, they found a classified ad online with a $800 for-sale posting, complete with photos of their dog, Bieber.

Saanich officers shadowed the owners, who met the suspect sellers in the parking lot of a supermarket.

The would-be sellers, a 35-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, both Saanich residents, were arrested for theft.

Drug-related deaths spark health warning Spike in prescription drug on streets leads to eight deaths in Greater Victoria Daniel Palmer News staff

Provincial health officials are warning of a potent prescription drug on the streets responsible for at least eight deaths in the Capital Region so far this year.

Fentanyl, an opiate used for pain control, is believed to be a contributing factor in 23 deaths across the province in the first four months of 2013, according to the B.C. Coroners Service.

There were 20 deaths connected to the drug in B.C. in all of 2012.

Matt Brown, Island regional coroner, confirmed eight deaths have occurred in the Capital Region, but said he can’t discuss specifics due to ongoing investigations.

“We have seen a regional increase (in the use of fentanyl),” he said, adding the province is facing a substance abuse problem with 200 to 300 deaths every year related to drug overdoses.

“We wanted to make sure the message was provided to the community and precautions were taken,” Brown said.

When prescribed, fentanyl comes in the form of a patch, releasing the narcotic over 24 hours into the patient’s bloodstream.

The street drug, however, can closely mimic heroin in its powder form.

“People are used to injecting a certain amount of powder, so if they inject the same amount and it’s half fentanyl or all fentanyl, then they run the risk of injecting a lot more,” Kendall said.

Emergency responders also need to be aware that fentanyl overdoses require a greater amount of the counteracting medication, naloxone, than heroin overdoses.

The B.C. Ambulance Service responded to more than 2,000 overdoses across the province in 2012, and more than 2,200 in 2011. dpalmer@vicnews.com

Representatives from Public Works and Government Services Canada and Tervita gave a presentation at the June 3 council meeting.

A full audience listened to a nearly two-hour presentation including a question period.

During the presentation council and meeting attendees were informed the cells where the contaminants will be held will be triplelined to ensure no leaching occurs.

Another common concern was the issue of the transportation of the sediment to the landfill and the precautions taken while it’s trucked in, said Mendum.

Council is considering forwarding the information to private groundwater consultants for review.

“The federal government is working with the district to make the information available to our residents for an ongoing basis,” Mendum said.

West Shore offers new hope

isiting Uganda, Africa earlier this year fulfilled a lifelong dream for June Reimer, even as it revealed to her firsthand the hardships of life there.

She went in her role as a member of the New Hope Schools Society, a West Shore-based charity which finances a primary school in a small Ugandan village.

Reimer visited the school for three weeks with other society members. The group brought 12 suitcases full of donated items, including soccer balls, T-shirts, school supplies and hundreds of toothbrushes donated by Victoriaarea dentists.

“Everyone was so grateful Kyle Wells to us. A single mother with all Reporting these kids, and she would be on our doorstep the second morning, offering us this chicken because we bought a T-shirt for her 11-year-old son,” Reimer said. “She just had tears in her eyes and was so grateful.”

The trip was life changing in many ways.

On a Friday, one of the group noticed a little girl lying on a bench outside the school, looking quite ill. They discovered she had leukaemia and died on the Sunday. The family knew she had the disease, but could not afford medication or care.

“Her last day of life she was at our school. You continue life until you die and it was somewhere safe to be.”

The society was founded in 2003 to build the school and keep it running. It stemmed from a visit by local residents to Busabaga, Uganda, where they saw the lack of education.

Starting out as a one-room primary school, the school now has 10 rooms and 607 students.

Tuition is free and the school provides one meal a day. Many of the children are HIV positive.

“That’s one of the reasons we’re here, because of the explosion, not only in popularity of the school, but success in how the kids are doing,” board member Jim Gauley said. “Kids walk for miles to go to that school, in the heat of the jungle.”

The school has now had two graduating classes. It is a Christian school but is open to students of all denominations.

Operating costs for the school for a year hover around $46,000, which includes a modest salary for the teachers, student meals and medical and school supplies. A few of the children pay a small fee, if their families can afford it. The school is also in need of a new kitchen and a new water tank, at an estimated cost of $3,500 and $4,500, respectively.

The main fundraiser is a gala dinner each October at Olympic View Golf Course, being held this year on Oct. 19. The society also works with businesses and agencies in the West Shore, such as West Shore Rotary and the City of Langford to raise funds and collect items for the project.

The next event for the society is the Charity Golf Tournament on July 6. The nine-hole tournament at Metchosin Golf Course and Country Club will include a dinner, prizes, silent auction and a hole-in-one contest.

rmed with a shovel, a camera and a hypothesis, John Cassidy searches for clues among fire wreckage.

The Colwood fire investigator has 20 years of experience and often begins the hunt as the fire still burns.

During his career Cassidy has attended about 9,000 calls, roughly 1,500 of them fires. He has investigated blazes in dumpsters, tree stumps, fields, vehicles and homes.

“Anything that burns we have to investigate,” said the 46-yearold.

Discovering the cause is a bit different from other investigations.

“Police investigations of a serious crime or assault leaves behind evidence like DNA or blood. But for us the whole process of a fire is destroying everything,” explained the Colwood assistant fire chief.

A sleuth on scene, Cassidy has a keen eye for clues such as uneven charring of wood or smoke and heat patterns. He assesses variables including weather and barometric pressure that could impact a fire. More often than not he eliminates potential causes, leading him to the initial spark.

Municipalities feel city’s pain Greater Victoria is blessed with many kilometres of coastline and as such, is home to a large number of pleasure craft.

Over the years, some boat owners have chosen to take permanent or semi-permanent refuge in the protected waters in and around the Capital Region. Such spots as the Gorge and Selkirk waterways, Oak Bay and Thetis Cove in View Royal have been among the favoured spots for mariners looking to avoid moorage fees and, in some cases, enjoy free living space.

When these boats have created problems, either by coming away from their anchorage in a storm or leaking mechanical fluids or bilge into the water, affected municipalities have struggled to find permanent answers to what has become an ongoing issue.

Of late, rowers in the Selkirk waters in Victoria have noticed floating human excrement in the area, not to mention had occasion to dodge drifting boats for which no one appears to want to take responsibility.

While the solution might appear simple on the surface – follow the trail and levy a fine, or maybe even seize vessels? – this case offers another example of jurisdictional paralysis.

The City of Victoria, like all coastal municipalities, has little to no authority on the water. And it worries about the cost of contracting out marine health and safety enforcement in the area to a third party, such as the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority.

Neither Transport Canada, which retains responsibility for enforcing navigable water regulations here, and the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, which oversees the marine habitat, seem to want to take the lead on the issue.

They may be forced clarify their policies before long, however, since Victoria is fast tiring of having no teeth with which to deal with abandoned and derelict vessels.

If and when this problem is solved, it will no doubt cause a ripple effect across the region, as other municipalities seek lasting solutions for dealing with problem vessels on their harbours and waterways.

Fortunately, politicians are starting to respond. Ontario’s government plans to spend billions to expand its regional transit system in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, under a plan called the Big Move. But before we spend enormous amounts on improvements, we need to ensure projects contribute to a region-wide rapid transit network using the latest technology and adhering to the highest sustainability and costeffectiveness standards.

That’s why a proposal to use diesel trains for the Air-Rail-Link plan to connect downtown Toronto with its international airport in Mississauga is concerning. Heavy diesel trains emit particulates and other contaminants, including known carcinogens.

Numerous experts, including Toronto’s Medical Health Officer, have urged the Ontario government to abandon its diesel plan in favour of electric trains that could be better integrated into a region-wide rapid transit network.

Vancouver, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and New York City have consistently ranked among the most livable cities on the continent, in part because they take the environment into account in planning decisions.

They all have world-class public transit systems that move residents in a safe, affordable and sustainable way. davidsuzuki.org

LETTERS Mayor Leonard vs. Victoria police Re: VicPD accepts challenge (Guest column, May 31) Unfortunately in setting Saanich Mayor Frank Leonard straight on Victoria’s response to calls such as noisy parties, John Ducker supports the fallacy that funding is not in balance because Victoria has the troubled downtown activity that suburbs do not.

But Victoria gets revenue from the properties and businesses that peddle booze to all comers. Why isn’t Victoria using those funds for the extra policing needed?

By the way, Frank Leonard is also wrong on Victoria’s closing of neighbourhood police offices.

I checked that the police office in the Esquimalt firehall is still open and staffed weekdays – live interacting people were there when I checked.

Perhaps Leonard listened to Esquimalt politicians who cannot see the half block from City Hall to that police office, even with those quite visible Victoria police vehicles sometimes there.

The big question is why voters elect stumbling politicians like Desjardins, Fortin, and Leonard, who are unwilling to perform their duty. The reason for government is protection of the individual. Police are the front line of that protection within country borders.

In digging into the bunfight, as you should, consider the possibility that many mayors and councils want power themselves instead of co-operation.

On several subjects Frank Leonard seems to be pandering to those who almost defeated him in the last election. Puzzling.

City doesn’t need more cycle lanes Re: Spin City (News, May 31) It’s nice to think of Victoria as Cycle City, even though a very small proportion of our trips are made that way.

Victoria does have a friendly climate, a street-car era “bones” for city design, making distances short for many from home to work, stores, etc.

However, it gives me a pain to hear the likes of Brad Dellebuur, city transportation manager, or the cycling coalition, suggest that we just need more bike lanes, etc. to get people on two wheels.

I have been cycling in this area for more than 45 years, with 35 years before that in various places in the U.S. I find few hinderances to cycling in the Greater Victoria area.

Today, much of what I learned through experience can be taught through a course or reading, in a short time. One learns about

Giving voice to the cause In response to Don White’s letter about the fallacy of “greenest neighbourhood” (News, May 31) it would appear that he is not a believer in “every journey begins with a single step.”

It is true he has no way of knowing all of the environmental practices of the Gordon Head-Oak Bay residents, however he comes across rather sanctimonious in his judgments of vehicles driven (weren’t they parked at the time of

observation?), water recovery (rain barrels may be in the back yard) and tidy yards (do push mowers mean an unkempt lawn?) etc.

When electing a representative one looks not only in terms of being “one of us” but also leadership.

Maybe the people confident enough to display an Andrew Weaver sign are looking for a leader to help them move forward in their quest to be more “green.”

I think it would do the party a disservice to insist that only those who already live a more pronounced environmentally friendly lifestyle are allowed to openly show support for a Green candidate. If this is the case, the writer is correct in his prediction of “doom.”

I did not vote for Andrew Weaver, but I appreciate the opportunity he provides in presenting alternate views in the legislature.

Along with taking cues from the representative the voters have elected, perhaps the spotlight label of “greenest neighbourhood” will motivate all of us who live here to become more conscious of our personal affect on the environment.

While maybe not yet the “greenest neighbourhood” in a practical sense, we are the neighbourhood most willing to give voice to the cause!

It’s time to stop the whining and make education more easily obtainable. Schools could stop wasting PE time on activities that have no adult carry-over and install bike courses instead. Safe cycling could be funded as an adult education offering.

It’s true that there are a few changes to the road structure, etc., which might help, but just painting more bike lanes is not one.

Drivers crossing the new Craigflower Bridge could have a beautiful mural welcoming them into Saanich, thanks to the students and staff at Craigflower elementary.

The school is expected to go before Saanich council to seek approval to paint a large First Nations mural on the side of their school, visible from Admirals Road.

“There are many ways to show our depth of love and connection with the aboriginal people presently and past, so it’s a way to say to this community, ‘Welcome.

Welcome, community,’” said principal Lynne Moorhouse.

“It’s about the whole issue of healing and honouring. We’d like to acknowledge and thank the Coast Salish people and the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations people for allowing us to work, play and learn on this land.”

The mural, codesigned by artists Butch Dick (Songhees) and Darlene Gait (Esquimalt), is slated to be painted onto a 24-foot by eight-foot plywood panel, then affixed to the southfacing wall.

“Every child in the school will paint on it, and every community member will be able to come paint on it,” Moorhouse said.

The mural depicts Coast Salish First Nations elders and a welcome figure greeting people to the land.

The school’s outer walls will also be painted as sunrise and sunset backdrops.

Moorhouse says the school’s population is more than 92 per cent aboriginal, and it is located on a site on which First Nations people lived as long as

2,800 years ago.

Two sets of human remains were found on the school property in February during preconstruction of the new bridge.

“In the unsettling of those remains, there’s been an auspicious feeling (at the school)

of connectedness to the elders,” Moorhouse said.

The mural requires council support because public art without approval from Saanich is deemed graffiti, under the municipality’s unsightly premises bylaw.

Moorhouse says artist Morgan Macauley is “chomping at the bit” to get working on the mural. The school’s goal is to have the artwork complete by June 21, National Aboriginal Day. kslavin@saanich news.com

A group of middle-aged women posing naked for a calendar might not be what comes to mind when one thinks of a wildly successful pin-up shoot, but Calendar Girls at Langham Court Theatre is a play based on that very true story.

Director Michael King says the show, running June 13 to 29, is a family friendly show that doesn’t contain nudity.

“There is the scene where we do the calendar shoot, and in that scene the women on stage do not have their clothes on. But they are artfully concealed by a myriad of items,” he says. “The choreography of that scene was really hard … just making sure that from all angles of the audience the women aren’t exposed.”

Calendar Girls tells the story of a group of friends from Yorkshire, England who produce a nude calendar as part of a fundraiser for a cancer ward at their area hospital.

“The calendars they would do every year were photos of country churches and bridges – they never raised much money.

Casting Victoria-based actors in a show in which there would be covered nudity was

easier than the director expected.

“I’ve never had so many women show up for an audition knowing that they were going to be taking their clothes off on stage,” he says.

“We had 50 women show up for the audi-

tions. We have nine women in the show playing 10 female characters, and six of them actually take their clothes off.”

The Langham Court production is based on the 2003 film of the same name, starring Helen Mirren.

King says he never got around to watching the movie, and once he was tasked with directing the local stage version, he consciously avoided the film.

“I guess i just wanted to put my own slant on it, and we’ll see what happens,” he says.

The show is being advertised “for mature audiences” but King stresses the nudity is all tastefully covered.

“Calendar Girls should not make anyone uncomfortable. It’s a light, funny show with some very endearing themes in it.

“We’re talking about the loss of life and the loss of partners, but we’re also talking about the goods that can come out of that.

These friends went out and did something about it and turned it into such an amazingly good thing. It’s a very positive story.”

Calendar Girls shows at 8 p.m. at Langham Court Theatre (805 Langham Ct.) starting June 13. A pair of 2 p.m. matinees are scheduled for June 22 and 29. Tickets are $21 for adults, $19 for students and seniors. Moira Tait is an intelligent and articulate 70-year-old who volunteers at the Victoria Women’s Transition House, helping elderly women who are facing the challenge of abuse.

She first came to the organization as a client. “My son was dying of cancer and I was very vulnerable,” she explained. It was during that time that Tait suffered a significant loss of vision, and she became desperate, wondering how she would survive.

Tait’s life took a disastrous turn when she was convinced to turn over the bulk of her life savings to renovate her daughter’s Alberta home with the promise she would

be invited to live out her years there.

When the renovations were finished and paid for, her daughter reneged on the arrangement and Tait was left out on the street.

She had a friend with a basement suite in Victoria, and made her way here in a last ditch effort for survival.

“I can’t tell you how humiliating, how embarrassing it was to be an older woman and be in that position and to have to ask for help,” she said. “It just about killed me, and I’m one of the toughest broads I know.”

The question now is: Will the Liberals give Bill 10 a second look? Will they invest the seniors’ advocate with real authority?

“It’s where things get a little fuzzy. Is financial abuse by an Internet friend or lover any different from being taken advantage of by a flesh and blood person that you have a relationship with? Or is it fraud by a stranger?” said Charmaine Spencer, a lawyer and adjunct professor at Simon Fraser University whose speciality is older adult abuse issues.

But the situation is far from hopeless.

“The Vancouver Island Health Authority has the right to enter a home and investigate reports of abuse,” said Dianne de Champlain, community education co-ordinator of the Victoria Women’s Transition House. “As well, the Public Guardian and Trustee is a very good entry point for people who are aware of a potentially abusive relationship.”

Although it’s important that seniors who are feeling abused or threatened tell someone about their problem and seek help, statistics say that won’t happen.So it’s vital that friends, relatives and neighbours are aware of the potential for abuse. If abuse is suspected, concerns should be reported to VIHA, the Public Guardian and Trustee, the police or to one of the other organizations in the community who deal with elder abuse issues.

One of the most remarkable of Tait’s activities arose from a coping mechanism she embraced during her own period of recovery. She discovered yoga at Transition House and now teaches the activity at various community centres and seniors’ residences. “I may not be a good mediator, but I’m a good, moving meditator,” she said with a laugh.

Colleen Brownlee, 69, has had a varied career, from being a teacher and CEO to a short stint as a politician when she was a councillor with the District of Metchosin.

She moved to the West Shore after retiring as a superintendent of schools in the Calgary area.

She was born and raised in Victoria, graduated from Victoria High school, attended UVic and and started her career in education in Victoria.

“My grandparents came to Victoria in 1896 from Greece,” she says.

Presently she does some casual teaching for the military at Fleet School CFB Esquimalt in their Language Training Division, as teaching continues to be her passion.

Over the past year she has been setting up and co-ordinating a Seniors’ Information Resource Centre in Metchosin (SIRC) that is creating and expanding the Age-Friendly community made available through a UBCM grant to the District of Metchosin.

A few of her volunteer activities include Metchosin Day, cooking for Metchosin Arts and Cultural Centre, Metchosin Volunteer Firehall and Metchosin Equestrain Society.

What is your favourite West Shore destination or activity? Why? My favourite destinations on the West Shore are Taylor Beach and the Esquimalt

Lagoon. These are areas where you can walk, and it is a place to heighten and be in touch with all of one’s senses.

Chris Pratt celebrated his first birthday in Metchosin and returned to the district 30 years ago. He keeps busy working on his property, landscaping and gardening. His beachfront land allows him to easily get into his kayak. He likes to go for walks, especially at Devonian Park.

Pratt has been both practising yoga and learning about computers, for more than 15 years.

“I am more skilled at yoga than computers,” he said with a laugh. “They both require different parts of your brain and your body.” ●

Doris Truscott is an active senior who participates in events at the Open Gate Church in Langford and she likes to go to the Juan De Fuca Senior Centre. She organizes the centre’s walking group, the JDF Stragglers. Each week the bus takes up to 18 seniors to different locations for a walk.

“It’s safer to go with others in case you fall,” said Truscott. Staying active is very important for Truscott who credits her activities to her good health.

“You have to keep active you can’t just sit on your butt,” said the senior, who is also part of a carpet bowling team. ●

In her spare time, Joanne Burton loves creating things. She makes teddy bears and paints local landscapes using acrylics. Some of her favourite scenes to recreate are the Esquimalt Lagoon, Goldstream Park and various farms in Metchosin. She started painting at 14 when her parents gave her a paint set.

She is also learning to use an antique knitting machine in hopes of making a sweater. “I am trying to teach myself the computer so I can find manuals for the knitting machine and other things,” Burton said.

Burton is a member of St. Mary’s Church in Metchosin and is a member of the Juan de Fuca Arts Guild. ●

Summer band camp makes comeback Don Descoteau News staff

Teachers will rekindle a summer tradition in Greater Victoria.

For 20 years or so, band teachers Colin Campbell, John Fawcett and Tom White dutifully set aside time on their summer break to teach a little bit more to students keen on building musical skills and doing something fun over the summer holidays.

When the three retired the full summer band program fell dormant.

Until now.

Jeff Weaver, Campbell’s replacement at Oak Bay High a couple years back, and Marianne Ing, who added the band program to her repertoire at Central middle school when Weaver left, are among a group of 10 music educators who hope to stem the loss of young musicians from high school bands by offering something extra.

The group, many of whom were taught or mentored by White, Fawcett and Campbell, revamped the old band camp idea and beefed up the summer program at St. Michaels University School July 9 to 19.

The summer sessions, aimed at middle and high school students, include junior and senior jazz band, intermediate and advanced concert band, and new features, jazz combos and non-jazz chamber music.

Weaver notes the instruction the students will receive, both in groups

and individually, is exceptional with the likes of Victoria Conservatory of Music woodwind guru Gord Clements and Victoria Symphony players joining the middle and high school teachers.

“You’re getting experienced teachers who know how to work with students. And they’re all specialists.”

A popular element over the years has been “switch band,” in which students learn the basics of a completely different instrument. While it’s tough to change instruments during the school year – fear of not playing well can be a deterrent, Weaver says – students have a safe, welcoming environment to switch from say, a saxophone to a trumpet.

One young veteran of summer band speaks highly of the experience.

Graduating Oak Bay High trombonist Galen Rohon-O’Halloran says he has many good memories of the people he met and the improvements he made by putting in the extra work.

“It’s really fun and it’s not a tedious or boring music camp,” he says. “You improve, definitely, because you’re getting a bunch of different opinions on music from some excellent musicians.”

Traffic travelling on Goldstream west to Leigh Road will get a dedicated and protected right hand turn lane and will not be required to stop at the 4-way stop. A traffic signal will replace the 4-way stop at Goldstream Avenue and Leigh Road at some point in the future when traffic volumes warrant it.

Losing the B.C. girls high school AAA soccer final 1-0 to perennial powerhouse Argyle Pipers was a bitter pill to swallow for the Oak Bay Breakers.

Reflecting on her team’s performance this season and at last weekend’s provincial tournament in North Vancouver, however, Oak Bay co-captain Katie Hanson had nothing but admiration for her teammates.

“I think this group is really special in the way everyone was able to commit entirely to the program and our main goal, which was to get to provincials,” the Grade 12 defender said. “I’m really proud of the way everyone competed and was committed.”

As it was all season, the Breakers’ backline was a brick wall through the tournament, giving up just one goal in regulation or overtime. Grade 12s Hanson, Elise Butler and Jessie Collison – who played together since Grade 9 – and Grade 11 Sabine Boisvert drew the praise of coach Brent Garraway for their work ethic and leadership.

“We make (the program) about way more than just the soccer. A big part of it is them maturing and growing up and learning life lessons,” he said.

Tournament host Argyle Pipers scored around the 30-minute mark in the final, then went into shutdown mode. The Breakers had several scoring opportunities in the second half, including a two-on-none that saw Meghan Kivell’s attempted pass to a teammate intercepted by Pipers’ goalkeeper, Austin Studor, who was named tournament most valuable player.

“We were in their end quite a bit and there were a lot of good chances,” Hanson said.

“Their goalie just stood on her head.”

It was the first time Oak Bay had reached the B.C. championship match since 2009, when the Breakers lost to North Van’s powerhouse, Handsworth.

It was Oak Bay’s fourth silver medal in the past 10 years, during which the team has finished fourth or better five times.

Mornings at school are a little different for Ben Goertzen than they are for his classmates at Pacific Christian School.

That’s because the Grade 10 student doesn’t roll into PCS until around 10 a.m.

For four of the five school days in a week, Goertzen joins 12 other Greater Victoria students to train at the Pacific Institute for Sports Excellence in the Canadian Sports School program. The time spent at PISE is credited towards their high school educations.

Weightlifting, gymnastics and wind sprints dominate the classes, run by Olympic weightlifter Jeane Lassen.

“I’ve seen major improvements in a lot of my life, not just (weightlifting),” said Goertzen, who plays second base for the Victoria Eagles of the B.C. Premier Baseball League.

“On the diamond I’m faster and just feel all around stronger. Hopefully I can enroll again next year.”

The program is open to elite-minded athletes from all disciplines and runs from September to June.

Getting in is a process. Athletes submit a letter of intent and references from coaches before getting interviewed.

The program is capped at 25 students, 13 in the morning and 12 in the afternoon, from Grades 10 to 12.

“It’s for future Olympians

and international athletes, hopefully,” said Lassen, the class instructor. “Or any athletes who is highly dedicated.”

Lassen represented Canada at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and was in London in 2012 but was injured. Instead, she assisted coaching staff helping teammate Christine Girard win bronze.

She relocated to Victoria last year to run the program at PISE, which also trains members of the Boardworks diving club.

“It’s a lot of technical coaching with weights but there’s also a classroom component,” Lassen said. “Guest speakers, including many Olympians, routinely talk to the students about sports psychology, nutrition and dedication.”

Gymnastics and sprints are each once a week while weights are a main focus.

“The reason we do weights is because we find the kids don’t have the core strength (at the higher percentiles). It’s also very technical. They do a lot without the weight to build the memory of doing it correctly. Later they can continue to add weight,” Lassen said.

What’s remarkable is how well the training transfers to various sports.

Grade 10 swimmers Sarah Mabee-Hall and Maddie Powell of Claremont secondary attend. So do Grade 12 Claremont rower Ali Zwicker and Grade 12 Spectrum community school rower Katie Griffin.

“It’s not just in the amount of power I put out (while rowing), but the strength also helps with balancing the fine movements that are so important with rowing,” Zwicker said.

iscover a fresh take on West Coast pub cuisine at Langford’s Station House Pub. One of the West Shore’s favourite establishments recently welcomed chef Ryan Partridge, a local resident who was thrilled with the opportunity to create a new menu to satisfy Station House diners, explains owner Bill Beadle.

Moving away from some of the traditional pub fare, with an eye to offering guests a more modern approach, diners can choose from an excellent selection of fresh salads, for example, along with new features such as Thai curried chicken breast served with stir-fried vegetables over rice.

“We still have a great burger, but overall it’s a little bit healthier food,” Beadle says. “We’re responding to what our guests are asking for and at the same time, trying to stay ahead of the curve.”

The pizza offerings are proving extremely popular, served on a 12-inch home-made crust, including a gluten-free option that’s earning deserved accolades.

Yummy recipes include “Smoky Blue,” with apple butter, smoked bacon, red onion, toasted walnuts, mozza, blue cheese and balsamic reduction, and “Chipotle Chicken,” featuring a honey chipotle sauce, roasted chicken breast, green onion, banana peppers and mozza cheese.

Because the Station House is a hotspot for lunches, Partridge has developed some flavourful sandwich combinations, including the delicious chicken and brie, prepared with apple butter, smoky bacon and sunflower sprouts on cranberry and flaxseed bread, and the sought-after Philly Cheesesteak.

“People have been raving about the Philly cheesesteak – it’s been our most ordered item.”

Recognizing there isn’t a steakhouse on the West Shore, the Station House is capitalizing on Partridge’s culinary talents to serve up some delicious options for local steak-lovers. All the pub’s steaks – top sirloin or New York strip loin – are aged at least 28 days and cut in-house, then grilled to perfection.

Specialties include “The Dirty Bourbon,” garlic bourbon-glazed 6oz top sirloin finished with sautéed button mushrooms and served with fresh-cut fries and apple slaw, and “Black & Blue,” a black peppercrusted 10oz New York striploin topped with blue cheese and served with Caesar salad and a fully loaded baked potato.

Feeling daring? Try the “Proprietor’s Cut,” bone-in Canadian AAA beef prime rib steak weighing in at 36 ounces and served with fresh-cut fries and beef gravy.

Need even more reasons to visit the Station House? The friendly staff and welcoming setting have made the pub one of the West Shore’s favourite gathering spots, while a variety of special events mean there’s always something coming up on the entertainment calendar. Thursday brings Music Bingo, while Friday’s live music is a great welcome for the weekend. Come Saturday, the Station House welcomes a DJ to help you dance the night away.
