Win 1,000 $

shopping spree to Sevenoaks Shopping Centre

20 local University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) students are competing for fortune, fame and bragging rights with the return of the biggest reality contest from The Abbotsford News. One student will win the grand prize of $5,000 cash, the title of Freshman (formerly the Intern) of the Year and a summer internship with the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) marketing department.

THE CHALLENGE: Twenty UFV students are divided into 10 teams. Each team is associated with a corporate partner in the community. Their challenge was to create a marketing plan, video and a full-page advertisement for their sponsor business. All of the team projects can be viewed online at abbynews.com/contests. Teams have also been paired with a local charity and will do their best to raise exposure — making a positive change in our community.

THE ELIMINATION: Readers will have the opportunity to fire teams daily based on a list of questions and answers completed by the competitors, marketing plan, as well as their full-page advertisement and video. Follow your favourite teams via various social media sites that the teams choose to use! Votes

can be entered ten times per day, per IP address, at abbynews.com/contests. However, every contestant has immunity for the first four weeks. The News will track the weekly votes and announce them via Twitter every Thursday at 8 a.m. at twitter.com/abbynews. In the Thursday, June 13th edition of The Abbotsford News there will be a mass elimination of seven teams. Voting for the remaining three teams will continue until Friday, June 21 at 5 pm.

THE FINALE: Three last teams will be invited to the grand finale at Finnegan’s Pub on Monday, June 24. In a boardroom setting, the judges will take into consideration the votes, the teamwork, the project and the sponsor evaluations. In addition, each contestant will provide an individual pitch as to why he or she should be the Freshman of the Year. There, the winner will be announced and presented with the prize.

Vinyl’s comeback The newfound convenience of digital downloading, they reckoned, marked the beginning of the end for traditional music retailers. But nothing could be further from the truth.

a turntable in order to play their records. So why are people willing to use money they do not have to buy music that does not fit with today’s portable lifestyle? The answer on a superficial level is the quality of the music.

While most of us look toward the future for the next exciting innovation, there are some who are reverting to the technology of the past. Slowly but steadily, the distribution and use of vinyl records is being resurrected in American popular culture. Disc jockeys and middle-aged collectors who are wistfully seeking the nostalgia of their youth are no longer the only categories of consumers who are buying vinyl records.

However, the motivation for buying vinyl runs deeper than simply appreciating the sound quality. Vinyl records offer an atmospheric experience unlike any other to a modern listener. Physically searching for the albums, taking the record out of its sleeve, placing it on the turntable and anticipating the needle’s contact with the grooves of the record is more captivating than simply clicking “buy song” on iTunes.

This trend may be heralding a new crop of consumers who are willing to trade-in convenience and speed for a more complete entertainment experience.

The revival of vinyl records shines a revealing light on our society’s appetite for new technology. The desire of vinyl buyers is to transform their music listening from the push of a button to a distinctive, time-consuming experience. This marks a backlash against the current right-here-right-now movement and signals a possible reversal of that trend. Surely if this reversal ever does take place in earnest, we will all be immediately notified on our Blackberrys.

At a cost of between ten and twenty dollars per new album, investing in vinyl records seems like an expensive hobby given the state of the economy and the availability of comparatively cheap, ninety-nine-cent digital music downloads. In addition to the expense of the music itself, the listener needs to own

Is smoking pot acceptable when you drive?

Using drugs, such as marijuana and cocaine, can be linked to roughly 20% of motor vehicle driver deaths

TEAM NORTHWESTERN AIR No, endangering the lives of others is never acceptable.

TEAM REGIONAL RECYCLING Not acceptable because it takes you out of a proper state-of-mind.

TEAM ROSBOROUGH LAW No.

Under the influence

TEAM COLUMBIA CABINETS NEVER . . . drive safe.

TEAM PRO-PACK No, being intoxicated or in a non-normal state when you drive in not acceptable at all.

Many people simply do not realize how much drugs affect one’s ability to operate a vehicle. Drugs, whether they are illegal or legal, can impair a person’s motor skills, leading to accidents. Using drugs such as marijuana and cocaine can be linked to roughly 20 percent of motor vehicle driver deaths in the United States. Compounding the problem is that these drugs are often used in conjunction with alcohol. Using drugs can also make it hard to safely operate a motor vehicle. Many drugs can affect the body in ways that make it dangerous to drive. A person may not think they are driving under the influence after taking a cold or allergy pill. However, many of these pills

can impair driving ability because they tend to cause drowsiness. Drugs that act on the brain, such as psychoactive drugs, antidepressants, sleeping medications, and antianxiety drugs, can impair reaction time, judgment and motor skills. Most medications that can prove dangerous while driving will carry a warning label that advises against operating heavy machinery. Illegal drugs have their own share of negative effects. Research indicates that marijuana is one of the most prevalent illegal drugs detected in individuals fatally injured in driving accidents. The Emergency Medical Services Authority says marijuana can cause reduced concentration, difficulty perceiving

time and distance, poor speed control, inability to read signs, drowsiness, and distraction. Cocaine can mask fatigue and impair a person’s ability to concentrate. Impulsive behaviors can lead to risk-taking. Some research suggests that antagonistic effects can be produced when cocaine is mixed with alcohol. The EMSA says the use of amphetamines can interfere with concentration, impair vision and increase the driver’s willingness to take risks. It is better to err on the side of caution no one wants to cope with the emotional, financial and legal ramifications that can occur should an accident leading to injury or fatality occur.
