Cancer survivor rides through on trip around world

Five years after his last stop in Creston, German cancer survivor Randolph Westphal arrived in town on Friday on his sixth trip around the world.

He has one less dog and is now riding an electrically assisted bike, but he remains the pic-

ture of health for a man who, at 55, has had more surgeries than most people have had doctors’ appointments.

Westphal was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 1987. His lymph nodes were removed and he was given six months to a year to live.

A forum timed to acknowledge United Nations World Environment Day drew about 40 invited guests to the Creston Valley Golf Club on Monday.

Co-sponsored by the Town of Creston and Labatt’s Columbia Brewery, the forum brought together businesses, government and other organizations to cele-

brate local water conservation, collaborate on conservation best practices and explore ways of working together toward longterm sustainability in the valley.

Using a theme of “Grow Together, Conserve Together”, the forum was designed in part to test the waters for creation of a Creston Valley environmental sustainability network.

t is time for nominations for the fourth annual Creston Community Literacy Award, and this year, the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy’s Creston branch is looking for nominations of the “unsung heroes” of literacy.

Nominations are not being accepted of professionals or people

who do literacy work as part of their jobs, like teachers, literacy program facilitators or co-ordinators. CBAL is interested in hearing about everyday people who have really made a difference to someone’s life through literacy and learning.

So who should you nominate? Maybe it’s a grandparent who really believes reading is the most important thing a child can learn and teaches their grandchild to love reading. Or, perhaps,

he Red Cross is looking for volunteers in Creston. A few hours a week can make a world of difference to someone in the community.

Various positions are available and full training and support is provided.

Those who experience a sudden illness or injury are often surprised by how quickly their lives can change, making everyday tasks suddenly unmanageable. Red Cross volunteers with the health equipment loan program help ensure people receive the health equipment they need to cope with health crises.

The Red Cross health equipment loan program is a volunteer-driven, community-based program that provides essential health equipment to individuals on a bydonation basis.

Providing equipment such as wheelchairs and bathing aids can make a real difference to people’s lives.

For more information on how to become a volunteer, call 250428-5105 or drop by the Creston office at 312 15th Ave. N. The office is open from 2-4 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Volunteers are needed for Tuesdays and Thursdays in order to provide continued service throughout the week.

From page 1 “I have 28 cancer surgeries behind me, but only four of them found more malignancies,” he smiled during his stopover, during which he was hosted at the Downtowner Motor Inn. Determined not to let skin cancer end his life, Westphal embarked on his first journey around the world, a bike tour that led to his amassing a current total of more than 205,000 kilometres of riding distance.

In 1996 he learned that cancer wouldn’t be the only challenge to threaten his life. A collision with an 18-wheel truck in Argentina led to a five-year stay in hospitals and rehab facilities. A severed leg was reattached and he lost his memory and sense of smell. Part of Westphal’s rehab program involved reading his diaries to help him piece together memo-

“Doctors told me I would never get out of the wheelchair,” he recalled. “Two years later, I was out of the wheelchair.”

Eventually, he recovered sufficiently to get back on his bicycle and start riding again.

“I like to show people I am an example of hope,” he said.

Westphal gets no financial help from cancer agencies — he’s not on the road to collect money. He accepts, but does not solicit, donations to help cover his living costs.

On this leg of his sixth world tour, which he said will be his last by bicycle (“The next time you see me I’ll be on a motorcycle!”), he loaded his beloved huskies, the mother-and-son team of Chinook and Nanook, onto his bike trailer and set off from Vancouver. With the dogs on the trailer, Westphal is towing a weight of about 270 kilograms.

“I started a couple of weeks ago and it was amazing how hot it was for this time of year,” he said. “Then there were three days of rain.”

The 60-kilometre climb from Hope to Manning Park Lodge on Highway 3 still has him shaking his head.

“That’s the longest hill I have ever done, anywhere in the world.”

Westphal left Highway 3 and went to Kelowna and then Revelstoke before heading back south through Creston.

Battling the flu, he nevertheless set back out on Monday to head for Alberta, then to ride north to Alaska.

“I’m 55 but I feel like I’m 100 right now,” he said. “But I like to motivate. A lot of people find hope in my story.”

“Our goal is to collaborate with as many organizations and individuals as possible for the longterm sustainability of the Creston Valley,” said Oswald. “Every person present is invited to contribute their input and suggestions. Creston RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan wasn’t in uniform on Saturday, but that didn’t prevent him from running in a few of the town’s ne’er-dowells.

Gollan put some of Creston’s best-known citizens in jail at Saturday’s Relay for Life fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. The effort was all in good fun, but it took $200 to make bail for each person arrested, with funds going to the Relay for Life.

“We raised $1,600 for our Jail and Bail program,” Gollan said. “And we had fun, too!”

Police Beat Creston RCMP responded to 64 calls for service from May 27-June 2, Gollan said.

May 27 •A Ninth Avenue South homeowner agreed to reduce the noise level at a house party.

•Following a complaint about a minor assault on Ninth Avenue South, a 61-year-old male was arrested and held in cells overnight. No charges were laid.

•Jason Beaudry is back in jail with a threemonth sentence for breaching probation conditions after he was arrested at a Highway 21 resi-

•A Cook Street resident complained about being threatened by someone in Ontario.

•Don’t get the munchies when you’ve got the drunkies. An intoxicated male driver was stopped in a Canyon Street drive-through and issued a 90-day driving prohibition. His vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

May 29 •The driver of a semi reported to have failed to check his brakes near Kootenay Pass and passed a vehicle on a double solid line was located and issued a warning.

•An elderly female driver was warned for driving too slow on Canyon Street.

•A house on Scott Street was egged for the third time in recent weeks. Gollan points out that if caught, the egg tosser could be charged with mischief. “It would be kind of ridiculous to end up with a criminal record for such childish behavior,” he said.

•A habitual speeder on Erickson Road was reported to police, who will be stepping up patrols.

•Creston RCMP assisted Nelson City Police by issuing a subpoena on Highway 3A. •A 911 call from an Erickson Road residence was attributed to a child playing with the phone.

•A 92-year-old female died suddenly of natural causes in her 22nd Avenue South home.

May 30 •A wallet was found on Highway 3A near Boswell.

•A driver who waved at a passerby on Elm Street took offence when a middle finger was waved in response.

•A Hillside Street resident reported a vehicle theft, then called back later explaining he had forgotten where he had parked his vehicle.

•Participants in a consensual fight on Canyon Street could have left quietly when police arrived. Instead, a 45-year-old sped off in his car, nearly hitting some pedestrians. He was issued tickets for driving without due care and attention and failing to follow police directions.

May 31 •A security camera was stolen from the outside of a Canyon Street business.

•Youths doing bike stunts on benches at a 16th Avenue North business were the subject of a complaint.

•Police continue to investigate a report of theft under $5,000 at a Canyon Street business.

Australian long rider makes unplanned return to Creston

Less than three months since his last visit, Australian horseman Joe Guy made an unscheduled ride through the Creston Valley on Friday.

He was riding a different horse, but travelling with his 14-year-old son, Zack. Guy continues his commitment to life on the road. This time he arrived at Renee’s Roadhouse Diner in a saddle atop Miles, a horse that was given to him in Rock Creek only a couple of weeks ago.

“He’s 11 years old, unbroken and has never worked,” Guy said, saddling up yet another horse that was likely destined for an unhappy end to its life. “No one had laid a hand on him for four years — just catching him was a challenge.”

Eight days after being put into Guy’s remarkable hands, Miles was continuing the southeastward journey that his new owner started in Merritt earlier in May. Guy was riding four-year-old Dan when he and Zack started out. A week on the road followed eight days of training and Dan, once destined for the glue factory, was broken and ready for others to ride.

How long Guy and Miles will travel together is anyone’s guess. The Nomadic long rider left Creston on Friday evening, with plans to rejoin his wife and two daughters in Bayne’s Lake before continuing eastward. Somewhere along the way he will sell Miles, pick up another unbroken horse whose owner is tired of feeding it, work his magic, and saddle up once again.

“I’m planning to ride to the East Coast and we will stay there about a year,” he said. “I hear it’s really beautiful there.”

through the Gray Creek Pass to Kimberley went sour. Guy, Zack and Miles met with deep snow about 11 kilometres off Highway 3A and Guy left his two companions behind while he walked a mile to see if conditions improved further on. They didn’t, so he trudged back through the deep snow and the returned to the East Shore and on to Creston.

“I hate doubling back,” Guy said. “And now my feet are killing me. When we were in Wynndel, Zack asked me where I would like to be if I could be anywhere in the world. I told him, ‘Right here, but without the friggin’ sore feet.’ I’ve never been so sore in my whole life.”

Since leaving Australia five years ago, Guy has travelled through 14 countries, but he loves Canada.

“It changes so fast,” he said.

“Once I was riding along under clear skies and 15 minutes later I was in a whiteout. That doesn’t happen back home.”

His nomadic life has also come to suit his wife, too.

“She was talking to somebody and I heard her say she could never own a house,” he smiled. “Good thing, too, because it’s hard to have a house and live like this.”

A musician, author and storyteller, Guy makes cash by performing, selling his book and CD, and selling the horses he is given to train.

“Another life saved,” he thinks, as he passes an animal, once considered “unrideable”, on to an appreciative new owner.

Unintended consequences. It’s a phrase that keeps coming to mind as I wrestle with an issue that is difficult to broach. What happens when the nonprofit sector has a negative — albeit unintentional — impact on the private business sector?

Discussions at town council meetings in recent months have touched on the question and provided an opening to create a public discussion.

Take a look at the community’s dwindling retail sector and the empty storefronts along Canyon Street and in the Creston Valley Mall and it is clear that our local economy is anything but strong. Which means we rely even more on non-profits.

The present town council has been examining the issue of permissive tax exemptions, just one of many public policies that can impact private businesses. In this case, council has the ability to declare all or a portion of the land and buildings used for public benefit to be exempt from paying property taxes.

Churches, schools and many nonprofit organizations get this status.

But the town is going to have to tackle the fact that many of these groups now operate businesses in order to help pay their bills.

Many churches now have thrift shops, and some serve food and coffee. (Areas used for public worship are exempted by statute.) It’s a way to help offset expenses and it’s perfectly understandable. But should the portion of the property used for business be exempt from property taxes when similar businesses, often close by, are paying their full share?

Councillors have been careful to point out, many times, that property tax exemptions equate to a donation by other property tax payers.

Churches are far from being the only organizations in competition with private businesses, though.

Gleaners sells used goods, often deflecting them from the landfill and, in turn, passing on the profits to numerous other important non-

profits. But there are private businesses that also sell similar goods.

They pay property taxes, and pay for their inventory and salaries.

Actually I don’t believe the door was ever locked behind me for two reasons: one, because we were free from the Saturday chores of polishing all the furniture or ironing pillowcases and would not return until we heard the yells of, “Neil, dinner!” echoing across the neighbourhood, and two, the words, “Stay outside till I call you,” were more powerful than any deadbolt in the free world.

Wishing a happy 146th to Canada

To the Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to wish a happy birthday to a very beautiful young lady named Canada, who will be turning 146 on July 1. She truly is a sweetheart and we all love her very much. Also, never forget the legacy of Sir John A. MacDonald, the father of Confederation and our nation’s first prime minister. The bicentennial of his birthday (Jan. 11) in just two years’ time will be a historic event indeed.

As well, celebrate your heritage, whatever it may be — whether you are of First Nations, Métis, European, Asian, Middle Eastern, African or Indian descent (I am French myself).

We are all Canadians in this unique and great country of ours, where all men and women are created equal.

To close my letter, I wish to offer my congratulations to Christy Clark, the 35th premier of British Columbia, and her election victory (despite the fact I’m conservative). She is our very own “Iron Lady” of B.C. (in reference to Margaret Thatcher, whom I will miss greatly). This is why I want to see more women, young people and those of the First Nations become involved in politics, as a way of building a better world for future generations.

I also wish all the best to Michelle Mungall, whom I have met on a few occasions — she is quite a dynamic young lady. And a big thank you Greg Garbula and Sjeng Derkx, who gave it their best shot. However, I would very much like to see a man or woman Conservative candidate run in the next provincial election for the NelsonCreston riding in 2017. I would throw my hat into the ring, but unfortunately, I am not a politician.

In the meantime, everyone take care, think positively, be optimistic and never give up hope, because good times are coming. Always have faith (I am a great believer in angels and miracles, who also prays every single day), and may the Lord keep you safe. See you at the Canada Day celebration!

Erickson water taxes are too high

To the Editor: I am writing this letter to inform the Creston Valley and area residents on the increase of our Erickson water taxes. I am certain the majority already know. I feel we are being robbed! How do you feel?

The mayor, along with his council members, Interior Health, the water commission board and Regional District of Central Kootenay directors all voted in favour of this increase. We, the people of Erickson, did not get to vote.

I myself have to come up with $1,171 by July 1 or face the overdue amount of $1,288 after this date. This increase is up considerably from $576 in July 2005 and $845.67 in 2012 — and increase of $325.33 in just this last year alone. This is very wrong!

I am only a small farmer who uses a small fraction of water from May to September. Most farmers in the area only use the water from May to September. We took advice and put in a

drip irrigation system to save on water.

My neighbours, who do not irrigate, have a bill of $3,500. Robbery!

The water is still flowing in our lines and I feel we are being punished by Interior Health. It’s a long story going back to Erickson’s fight for no chlorine, which we voted against — yet, the deadly chlorine still remains flowing in our lines.

They say the water bill is only going to go up. There is no break coming, and not even a financial plan in place to help pay for these high bills that should never be so high.

I understand they took a water rate list from the Okanagan and said this would be good for Erickson. Where did they get their education? What gives them the right to vote that our water should be rated the same as the Okanagan’s? Are we the Okanagan?

Do we have as many residents as the Okanagan does? How can you compare apples to oranges?

I could quit farming, cut out all my blueberry bushes and become just a single-family dwelling. But then that would take away my modest yearly income! Plus, they say that if I do go back to a single-family residence, then I will never get my water back if circumstances change and once again the water would be needed for farming. Is this a form of bullying or a threat?

I would also like to know why a “certain Creston female” has the notion that the Town of Creston is subsidizing water users. How did Erickson become classified as residential?

Call over beer cans unnecessary

To the Editor: (Re: “RCMP calls up 50 percent over recent weeks”, page 4, May 23 Advance) While I know everybody has an opinion, it seems a waste of time that somebody should phone the police because they found three empty beer cans on his or her property. This person should be charged with wasting police time. Did they not think to collect said cans and return them to the recycling depot?

For those that are interested there is more and more data coming out that genetically modified foods contribute to the proliferation of cancer, birth defects, diabetes, autism, infertility, allergies, obesity, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, irritable bowel syndrome, and other digestive and neurological problems. But you will never hear about any of this information on the mainstream media, just as I am sure you did not hear or see anything about this recent worldwide demonstration that took place on May 25. I know I didn’t.

Our demonstration started from the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market, an institution of which we are all justly proud — it is so good to know that we can buy pure and wholesome produce, meats, honey and milk. But it is very sad to learn that there are farmers in the Creston Valley growing genetically modified corn. Recently, the Harper government passed legislation allowing the growing of genetically modified alfalfa. Is this alfalfa now going to be soon fed to our cattle in this valley?

There is worldwide resistance to genetically modified foods. Within the last few days Japan has banned the importation of U.S. genetically modified wheat, African nations will not accept genetically modified foods as aid and over five million Brazilian farmers are suing Monsanto in a joint action. To date, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Greece and Hungary have banned genetically modified foods, and Australia, Spain, U.K., France, Turkey, India and Mexico have legislative bills under consideration.

The way genetically modified corn is effective against insects is that each corn kernel produces an insecticide, which, upon eating this kernel, the insect dies. When we eat this corn, our body is programed to produce this insecticide. Just recently it has come to light that farmers who had been planting genetically modified corn to prevent root worm, are finding that the root worm has developed an immunity to the genetically modified corn and they are having to use more pesticides instead of less. This evolution has taken place in less than 10 years.

As Monsanto has been so effective in preventing the labeling of genetically modified foods, I think the alternative is for farmers to label or say that their product is free of genetically modification.

Unfortunately for me, corn is my favourite vegetable, but I will be asking before I buy if the corn is genetically modified.

To the Editor: (Re: “March Against Monsanto draws 200 to downtown Creston”, page 3, May 30 Advance) Karolyn Whitford and Abbey Lane Farms deserve great compliments for organizing such a successful Anti Monsanto demonstration on May 25, where over 200 people, young and old alike, marched down the streets of Creston, taking part in a worldwide demonstration involving millions of people. The thrust of the demonstration was to have the government enforce the labelling of genetically modified foods. Monsanto has successfully prevented this labeling worldwide by spending millions of dollars fighting this legislation.

To the Editor: (Re: “DriveAble test unfair to rural seniors”, page 7, May 2 Advance) An April 2013 research article (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ pubmed/23628257) from the Centre for Research on Safe Driving, researchers concluded that it is premature to test older drivers with the SIMARDMD (Screen for the Identification of Cognitively Impaired Medically At-Risk Drivers, a Modification of the DemTect) cognitive test.

It looks like it is time to go back to the drawing board and take another long and hard look at what other jurisdictions have done and the long-term effects.

NFB documentary examines residential schools CRESTON AND DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Creston and District Public Library closes the 2012-2013 season of its National Film Board of Canada Library Film Club with the showing of the powerful documentary on Canada’s residential school system, We Were Children.

In this feature film, the profound impact of the Canadian government’s residential school system is conveyed through the eyes of two children who were forced to face hardships beyond their years. As young children, Lyna and Glen were taken from their homes and placed in Canada's residential school system, where they suffered years of physical, sexual and emotional abuse, the effects of which persist in their adult lives. We Were Children gives voice to a national tragedy and demonstrates the incredible resilience of the human spirit. Blending stunning dramatic storytelling with unflinching documentary narratives, the film gives voice to two children trapped in a system that would impact their lives forever.

Directed by Tim Wolochatiuk and written by Jason Sherman, We Were Children is produced by Kyle Irving for Eagle Vision Inc. and David Christensen for the National Film Board of Canada.

The executive producer for the Eagle Vision was Lisa Meeches, whose parents and older siblings were sent to residential schools.

Government of Canada, has stated that the idea for the film originated from a discussion she'd had at the Banff World Media Festival. It was Meeches who approached director Wolochatiuk with the project.

The film was shot in Manitoba — in Winnipeg, St-Pierre-Jolys and at the former Portage residential school, now the Rufus Prince building, in Portage la Prairie. It was produced by Kyle Irving for Eagle Vision, Loren Mawhinney for eOne Television, and produced and executive produced by David Christensen for the National Film Board of Canada.

“More than anything else, this film will make people believe what they have only heard second hand,” said Murray Sinclair, chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. “It grabs you by the hair and makes you turn your head and look at this country's history and see that the pain and anger and despair that Aboriginal people live with every day, has a reason, and the blame does not rest with the victims.

We Were Children will be preceded by the short impressionist documentary, Vistas: Button Blanket, which looks at the creation of a button blanket by integrating the performance of a traditional dance with the art of the West Coast Heiltsuk people.

Gord Perrin representing Canada in world v-ball championships

Creston’s Gord Perrin was among the starting six when Canada took to the court for the prestigious FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball) Volleyball World League championship on Saturday, defeating the Netherlands three sets to one.

The game was played in front of 3,500 in the Pepsi Coliseum and televised nationally on Sportsnet.

Perrin, a Prince Charles Secondary School and Thompson Rivers University graduate, plays professional volleyball in Turkey. He returned to Canada at the conclusion of the European championships in May to join the national team once again.

“He had a great winter,” said his father, Dave Perrin. “His team won the Turkish championship and finished fourth in the European championships.”

It was his second season in Turkey and Perrin has already been re-signed by the Arkas Sports Club for the 2013-14 season.

“His agent says Gord is ranked among the top five volleyball players his age (23) in the world,” Perrin said.

Volleyball World League

Gord Perrin, Adam Simac and Louis-Pierre Mainville of Canada put up a triple block on Jeroen Rauwerdink of Netherlands during Volleyball World League action on May 31 at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City.

Team Canada is in the C Pool for the 18-team World League, along with South Korea, Finland, Netherlands, Japan and Portugal. Canada’s first games will be played in Quebec City and Mississauga starting on May 31, then the team moves on to Osaka, Japan and Tampere, Finland for other matches. The World League finals will be played in Argentina in July.

Team Canada dropped a 3-1 decision to the Netherlands on Saturday and

now sits in third place in Pool C, tied with the Netherlands.

Television viewers are in for a treat, with all matches played in Canada scheduled to be carried on Sportsnet: •June 7, 7 p.m. EST – vs. Portugal; live on Sportsnet One; •June 8, 7 p.m. EST – vs. Portugal; tape delayed on Sportsnet One at 11 p.m., encore on Sportsnet East, Ontario, West, Pacific on June 9 at 10 a.m.; •June 14, 7 p.m. EST – vs. South

Korea; live on Sportsnet One; and •June 15, 7 p.m. EST – vs. South Korea; live on Sportsnet One. Perrin travelled to Quebec to watch his son’s first two matches, but he will be also keeping close watch as his daughter, Alicia, continues her ascendant volleyball career.

Alicia, 20, is a member of the women’s national team, which plays in Lima, Peru, to represent Canada in the Pan Am Cup from June 5-16.

Obituaries

Barry G.L. Jeffery 1931 ~ 2013

Barry Jeffery passed away peacefully on May 19, 2013 at his home in Creston, BC. The son of William and Ida Jeffery, Barry grew up in Calgary and spent 27 years working at the Calgary General Hospital.

Barry is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Edna, and their sons Gord (Pat), Mike (Ivy), and Paul (Darlene). He was “Papa” to four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Upon retirement, Barry and Edna moved to the Creston Valley and enjoyed many wonderful years together living in Boswell and Creston.

At Barry’s request, no funeral will be held. ,n lieu of Áowers, donations Pay be Pade to a charity of one's choice.

Sandy (Robert Alexander) Macdonald May 30, 1936 ~ September 23, 2012 Youngest son of Helen Elizabeth and Eugene Dever Macdonald, he is survived by his twin sister, Jean Evoy and older brother, David Macdonald.

Sandy was a native son of Creston. He loved life and was great hearted. Sandy did many things in his life including serving in the Canadian Forces, working in the entertainment and hotel industries and in the oil industry.

Wise and caring, his laughter was pure. We will miss him dearly and remember him always.

Our thanks to the staff of the Santauri Hospice in Calgary and to Yvonne Sluzar for all their good work.

Newberry and O’malley bringing music to Sasquatch SUBMITTED

In 2013, David Newberry and O’mally are engaging in a number of tours with a shared four-piece acoustic backing band, including upright bass, violin/viola, banjo and guitar, and they will play at the Snoring Sasquatch on June 13.

Newberry sings folk songs with rock sensibilities — or is it the other way around? Either way, his compositions provide insights into the complex contemporary social world through musical and lyrical exploration.

His 2010 CD, When We Learn The Things We Need To Learn, established him as a legitimate force in Canadian music, catching the eye of several of Canada’s roots elite, including Juno winner David Francey, who calls him “absolutely brilliant,” and Exclaim! magazine, which pegged him way back then as “an artist to watch,” more recently upgrading him to “evidence that Canadian roots music is in good hands.”

His 2012 release, No One Will Remember You (produced by Adam Iredale-Gray of Fiddlehead Studios and featuring

members of the Deep Dark Woods, Fish and Bird, The Gruff, O’mally, DRMHLLR, and more) made a number of best of 2012 lists, and sets a contemporary experimental rock vibe against a backdrop that is firmly rooted in timeless roots music.

Newberry came to music later than most of his peers, and via a path that is less than typical. At 20 years old, while training as a carpenter, a construction accident left him without the use of his left hand.

When his physiotherapist suggested learning an instrument as a means to rebuild his injured appendage, he chose the guitar and never looked back, emerging quickly as poet with a hankering for noise.

There is a joy in Newberry’s sometimes sombre music that is hard to explain. His live shows are frequently full of storytelling, humour and a strange celebration of life somehow rooted in a twisted pessimism. Not one to waste words, he packs each phrase with the kind of thought, meaning and complexity that is most often associated with singer-songwriters of the 1960s. But don’t get the wrong idea —

Newberry’s music is inescapably forward looking, constantly aiming to broaden the understanding of what roots music sounds like.

From the oceanside forests and farms of Canada’s West Coast, comes the free-range style of O’mally, a fresh face from the Gulf Islands, and a breakout artist with a distinctive sound. O’mally’s well paced clawhammer banjo and acoustic guitar layer her strong and earthy vocals.

Since the May 2010 release of her debut album, Speck, O’mally has enjoyed a swift foray into the spotlight of popular roots music. She’s toured the lengths of the country for festivals and shows, hit No. 3 on the national earshot folk/ roots charts, and continues to attract the attention of swaths of new fans, peers, and media.

She’s caught the ear of many a radio station, including every campus and community station between Victoria and Toronto, and Canada’s national radio network, the CBC. Tickets are $12 in advance at Black Bear Books and Kingfisher Used Books, and $15 at the door, which opens at 7 p.m.; the show begins at 8.

Volunteers needed for annual bat count

KOOTENAY COMMUNITY BAT PROJECT The Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP) is seeking volunteers for the annual bat count.

This citizen-science initiative encourages residents to count bats at known roost sites to provide valuable information on bat populations.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity for residents who care about wildlife to be involved in collecting valuable information” said Juliet Craig, Kootenay Community Bat Project coordinating biologist. “They don’t need any special skills and kids can be involved.”

The annual bat count is being promoted by the KCBP in B.C. to collect baseline data on bat populations before the devastating white nose syndrome enters the province.

“White nose syndrome is decimating bat populations in eastern North America,” said Craig.

“We are lucky that this disease is not yet in B.C. but it may just be a matter of time. Monitoring bat populations may indicate sudden declines associated with white nose syndrome.”

Residents wait outside a known roost site, such as a bat-house, barn, bridge or attic, and count bats as they fly out at twilight. They can video the emergence or use a hand tally counter to count the bats as they fly out. They record the final count along with some basic information on weather conditions. Two counts are done between June 1 and 21 before pups are born, and two more between July 21 and Aug. 15 when pups are flying with their mothers.

“We know relatively little about bats including basic information on population numbers,” said Craig. “This information will be extremely valuable, particularly if it is collected annually. If people want to get involved but don’t have a roost site on their property, we do our best to match them to a roost site nearby.”

Funded by Columbia Basin Trust, the KCBP also provides support for landowners dealing with bat issues on their property. To teach residents more about bats, Kootenay Community Bat Project co-ordinating biologist Juliet Craig will make a presentation at 7 p.m.

June 14 at the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area’s Wildlife Interpretation Centre. She will discuss the world of bats, bat houses, conservation, and evicting bats from buildings.

CRESTON GOLF CLUB

On May 19 and 20, the Creston Golf Club hosted the annual Blossom Open Golf Tournament. There were 98 competitors in the field, 32 from out of town, who enjoyed two beautiful weather days for golf as well as a golf course that was in super playing condition.

It was Jeff Langin, from Cranbrook, who came out on top with rounds of 70 and 75 to defeat Kowan O’Keefe by one stroke. In the ladies division, Cherie Baker of Creston took home the champion’s trophy

with rounds of 81 and 79, for a three-stroke victory over Ruthie Hoffman also of Creston.

The low net champions were Lacara Davidson (ladies) and Danny Huscroft (men).

Erickson Elementary School students recently took part in Ducks Unlimited Canada’s Project Webfoot.

Students make birdhouses through DUC project DUCKS UNLIMITED CANADA Creston Chapter

Project Webfoot, a Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) program, introduces young students and their teachers to the fascinating world of wetlands.

When Creston introduced this program in 2004, one school was chosen to offer it to their Grade 4 students. Gertie and Barry Brown were the first sponsors and Mason Brown’s Adam Robertson Elementary School Grade 4 class did the pilot project. The program was a success but funding was not forthcoming so it was actually an auction item for several years at the DUC fundraising dinner in October.

Now, however, the popularity of the program has caught everyone’s attention and since 2009, every school in the area from Crawford Bay to Yahk has the program and sponsors jockey for position to bring this educational program to the local students.

This sponsorship provides program materials for the classroom teachers and each student receives a very useful pocket guide to plant, animal, bird and reptile identification, as well as a subscription to the Puddler magazine. This involvement from a young age encourages children to become stewards of the world famous Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area, which is right in their backyards.

Seven years ago, Creston DUC members decided to take Project Webfoot one step further and with lumber supplied by J.H. Huscroft Ltd. sawmill they made birdhouse and bird feeder kits. Each spring, one class is offered the chance to construct a woodwork project and Creston DUC members arrive with the kits and tools for an enjoyable afternoon in the classroom.

When the nuthatch, wrens, robins and swallows return to the Erickson area this spring, they will have 19 brand new homes to chose from. Students in Nicole Wood’s Grade 4 class at Erickson Elementary School recently spent

an afternoon constructing birdhouses with assistance from members of the Creston DUC committee.

The wood for the project is still being donated by J.H Huscroft and this year the kits were assembled by Alan Chapman. The Columbia Brewery is this year’s sponsor for the Erickson school Webfoot program and Tanya Ducharme, an avid DUC supporter, came along to assist and see their sponsorship in action.

The Creston DUC chapter works toward one main fundraising event each year, the gala dinner and auction held in early October. If you are interested in fundraising for the wetlands and would like to be part of this group, call Gertie Brown at 250-428-7581.

First bird festival a success CRESTON VALLEY BIRD FEST

People travelled to Creston to see birds for the May 10-12 Creston Valley Bird Fest and were not disappointed. Over 91 species were spotted during the guided birding expeditions throughout the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area.

The Real Food Café provided a scrumptious International Migratory Bird Day luncheon with presentations on hummingbirds and coopers hawks. In the afternoon, several Crestonites offered tours to their greenhouses,

orchards, barns and verandas. The festival also offered a photography workshop by Jim Lawrence, a presentation on owls of B.C. by John Neville, and a bus tour to eight creative artisans’ studios.

The bird fest, hosted by the Creston Valley branch of Wildsight, celebrated the art, the agriculture and the birds of the Creston Valley.

Over 200 people registered and enjoyed two mornings of bird watching and a Friday night art show with the participation of our wineries and the world famous Tabletree juice. Hors d’ouevres

were supplied from local produce

by Red Circle Kitchen, while the elegant cello and keyboard duo of Strings Attatched added a touch of class to the Art for Birds event.

Keynote speaker Brian Keating, spoke enthusiastically about the world’s wild spaces and the need to protect them.

The 2013 Creston Valley Bird Fest Committee extends its appreciation to the hundreds of people and the thousands of birds that contributed to the success of the festival. Next year’s bird fest is scheduled for May 9-11.

Creston town council received a detailed overview of management of waterways and dams in the Columbia Basin at the May 28 regular meeting.

A presentation organized

by BC Hydro, the major provider of electricity in British Columbia, is appearing before local governments throughout the region as negotiations for a renewal of the Columbia River Treaty loom closer.

“There was some very good information presented,” said Coun. Judy Gadicke. “These waterways are critical to our area in so many ways and it’s a challenge to manage them in a way that balances the interests of all parties.”

Along with BC Hydro personnel, represented in the delegation were the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Representatives from Fortis, Ducks Unlimited and the Creston Valley Wildlife

Management Area also attended the session.

Probably the best news from the presentations was that the likelihood of a recurrence of last year’s floods along the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers is minimal, unless unexpected high rainfalls occur in the next few weeks.

Council Briefs •The Town of Creston will explore a request from Creston Valley Hospital to add a handicapped parking space in front the hospital.

Town staff reported that the hospital has also been informed that designating assigned parking spots on 15th Avenue North is not within the hospital’s rights.

•A proposal from Victoria to reduce speed limits within municipal boundaries to 40 km/h was received for information.

•The Creston Wave Swim Club will receive a Town of Creston travel bag to sell in a silent auction at its June 22-23 annual swim meet.
