City officials are taking pre-emptive action to kill planned civil disobedience at Colliery Dam Park before it begins by filing for a court injunction.

Last month, Dave Cutts, local coordinator for Veterans of Clayoquot, said he was planning to organize a group of people to occupy the lower dam at the park after council voted to remove the dams as a safeguard to potential catastrophic flooding.

Cutts has indicated he already has dozens of people willing to take action to occupy the park, which has prompted the city to seek a court injunction through B.C. Supreme Court to prevent the group from delaying the removal of the dams.

Work to drain the two lakes and remove the dams is expected to begin in July when water levels are at their lowest, which has prompted strong opposition from the community that views Colliery Dam Park as a vital asset to south end neighbourhoods. Cutts said he is surprised the city is seeking a court injunction this early in the process and, with a court date set for Monday (June 10), will seek a continuance to give him an opportunity to secure legal counsel.

“We didn’t anticipate this at this stage,” said Cutts. “We figured they’d layer us with $150 bylaw tickets first because there is easily a dozen bylaws that we would allegedly be breaking. We think it’s a safe bet that the judge will rule that since we haven’t done a thing in the park, that there are no signs or fences up, no work has started in the park, that it is simply a bully-boy tactic by five members of council who voted to remove the dams.”

Randy Churchill, the city’s manager of bylaw and security, said the pre-emptive measure to seek the injunction is rooted in public safety and that any attempt to delay the removal of the dams could potentially put citizens at risk should the dams fail.

“Because of the time constraints involved and the work we have to get done within that time frame, and because of the information posted by those who would try to prevent that work from being done, we have to take this action so we can continue with the removal that’s required,” said Churchill.

If the city receives the injunction, it would allow for the removal and arrest of people who interfere with the dam removal process through criminal contempt. Even if the injunction is not granted, occupiers can, at the very least, be ticketed $150 for bylaw infractions or, if the city chooses, be removed by police and charged under the Criminal Code. ◆ See ‘FUTURE’ /5

The upgrade cost came in at $810,652.

Nanaimo city council set the money aside in its 2009 budget.

Of the 12 newly refurbished cells, eight are dedicated for male prisoners while four are reserved for female. The drunk tank, which can hold several people at once, has also received standard upgrades.

About 3,000 people annually spend time in Nanaimo’s cells. Most are there for a few hours, but some stay as long as a week to await a court appearance.

The jail closed Feb. 2 to begin the renovations and reopened Tuesday, ready to accept new prisoners.

As the renovation began, prisoners had to be shipped to Parksville, Duncan and Ladysmith as directed by the Prisoner Management Plan.

“If you bring a guy in for being drunk, say we hold him for eight hours in Ladysmith.

But if he’s from Nanaimo do we just let him

go in Ladysmith? There were a lot of logistics involved,” said O’Brien.

The cells are used for the detention of people arrested by the RCMP as well as for prisoners in custody of B.C. Sheriff Services and by federal agencies such as Immigration Canada.

The Nanaimo RCMP detachment was built in 1987 with the most recent upgrades to the jail cells, new sprinkler systems, completed in 2002.

In 2005, the RCMP conducted assessments of all RCMP-used cells in Canada to determine compliance with current standards as prescribed by the commissioner.

The review identified cell blocks that needed to be redesigned to reduce the incidence of detainee suicide by eliminating hanging points; to protect against building damage; to prevent the creation of weapons by inmates; to protect against the concealment of weapons and contraband; and to optimize viewing of prisoners in the cells. reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

Two pedestrians were injured Monday evening after a vehicle, driven by a 19-year-old female, drove over them, according to Nanaimo RCMP. At about 6:30 p.m. numerous 911 calls were received regarding an accident involving several pedestrians. Citizens who find themselves spending some time in the city’s jail may notice the smell of fresh paint, but a number of significant improvements have been made during a four-month renovation project that will improve inmate and RCMP member safety.

The work brings the city-owned RCMP jail into compliance with federal RCMP standards published in 2012, though the city had been notified in 2008 by RCMP headquarters in Ottawa that required improvements would be necessary, mostly as a response to inmates who tried to or successfully committed suicide while in police custody in other jurisdictions.

“Suicide is always an issue in cell blocks,” said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const.

Gary O’Brien, while giving the media a tour of the renovated facilities Monday. “These new standards are a response to incidents in jails that have happened nationwide.”

The scope of the work includes: removing metal bunks and replacing them with concrete bunk pads (inmates are provided a thin mattress and blanket if staying overnight); replacing traditional metal bars with sliding doors; installation of non-slip floors; removing any physical hazards, such as sharp corners, within the cell; improving the prisoner booking area; and improving cell monitoring stations and guard work areas.

“Before there was physical separation of male and female cells, and now we also have virtual separation,” said O’Brien. “Only female guards monitor female prisoners, and only male guards monitor male prisoners.”

The new surveillance system comes into compliance with the Police Act, which requires municipalities with a population more than 5,000 to provide “adequate accommodation, equipment and supplies

With property tax rate increases expected to rise significantly in 2014, the city manager’s office has taken a preemptive approach by trimming management staff in an effort to reduce administration costs.

Al Kenning, city manager, said Doug Holmes, general manager of corporate services and assistant city manager, will be leaving the organization.

Holmes has been with the city for seven years. He started as the general manager of corporate services before taking on assistant city manager duties three years ago.

His duties will be assumed by other senior managers, and the long-term annual savings of the downsizing is estimated at $170,000.

According to the fiveyear financial plan, next year’s tax rate increase is expected to spike to 4.7 per cent, which includes one per cent built in to address future infrastructure needs.

The balance of the plan sees increases of at least 3.5 per cent.

“It’s my initiative to deal with budget pressures and try to face up with the reality of the financial plan, while addressing the reality that we’re on track for significant tax increases unless we make changes,” said Kenning, adding that administration must be run as lean as possible to best protect the direct services it provides to Nanaimo citizens.

“This by itself won’t solve all of the problems but at least it helps us go in the right direction.”

The resulting realignment of senior city staff is expected to be released in the near future.

Since May 28, 38 vehicles – 22 of those in the downtown core – have been broken into, according to Nanaimo RCMP. Many of the vehicles were in parkades or parked on side streets from Comox Road to Crace Street. Police say a number of them were unlocked, allowing thieves to easily steal the contents. Those that were locked had their windows smashed.

One suspect has been identified as a person of interest in the thefts. He is Caucasian, very thin and about 5’ 10” with a short blonde buzz cut. He has a large, protruding nose and was seen wearing light-coloured running shoes and blue jeans.

“If you park your car with valuables left out in plain sight, you run the risk of having them stolen,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “Always lock your doors, place valuables in the trunk or take them with you. Also, if you see a person lurking or acting suspicious near parked cars, call the police immediately.”

Items thieves often target include GPS units, iPhones and other smartphones, laptops, loose change, sunglasses and small electronic devices.

Discarded cigarette fire’s likely cause

Fire officials believe the cause of a house fire that displaced nine people Sunday was smoking materials.

Crews were called to a rental house on Machleary Street shortly after 3 a.m. to find the upper floor engulfed in flames.

The house was divided into three separate rental suites and all nine people living there, plus two friends, got out

of the building. As a result of the heavy fire damage to the upper floor and smoke and water damage to the lower floor, officials said that nothing in the house was salvageable.

None of the tenants had content insurance, but the owner had insurance on the building, which is a writeoff.

Ennis Mond, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer, said the fire started on the front closed-in deck on the upper floor.

From interviews with tenants and the evidence found on scene, he determined smoking materials likely caused the blaze. An upstairs tenant told him cigarette butts were

Mond said there are two safety lessons people can learn from the incident.

“No. 1, make sure your cigarette butts are out before you throw them out,” he said. “The other part of the safety message is make sure you have working smoke alarms.”

The smoke alarm upstairs did not activate, the alarm in one of the downstairs suites had been taken down and in the other downstairs suites, Mond could not find a smoke alarm.

A sailboat needing a tow, an empty canoe found floating near Neck Point and another sailboat aground in Nanaimo harbour kept Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue volunteers busy early this week.

The first call that Station 27 Nanaimo volunteers attended was for a sailboat adrift just south of Nanaimo.

Brandon Austin, search mission co-ordinator with the Victoria Joint Rescue Co-Ordination Centre, said two people on board had actually phoned the centre around 9 p.m. Monday to let them know their outboard engine wouldn’t start, but that they were still able to sail and did not need help yet.

“I think they were coming from Vancouver to Nanaimo,” he said.

Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, with calm winds, the centre tasked Station 27 volunteers with towing the sailboat into Nanaimo, said Austin.

Then on Wednesday, the search and rescue volunteers received two calls. Gordie Robinson, Station 27 administrator, said volunteers received the first call at 7:30 a.m. for an empty canoe

adrift just north of Neck Point Park, reported by a local fisherman. He said on board were three lifejackets, a couple paddles, fuel and an engine that was still warm, so rescue officials figured someone had fallen out of the canoe and called in a helicopter and hovercraft. Around 11 a.m., the search was called off when the owner of the canoe phoned police to report his boat missing.

The man, who was camping on a beach in Lantzville, explained that he had tied up above high tide and woke up to find his boat gone, so one possible theory is that someone took the boat for a joyride, he said.

“We didn’t know he was safe until he phoned the police to report that his canoe was missing,” said Robinson. “It happens, though, and we have to err on the side of safety.”

Volunteers brought the canoe back to the Station 27 boathouse and the man came and picked it up shortly after.

The third call came in just after 9 a.m. when a sailboat ran aground on a reef in the harbour near the Dinghy Dock Pub after ending up on the wrong side of a buoy marking the reef.

The station launched its second boat and after ensuring that the man aboard was in no immediate danger, they returned to headquarters and the boater called a commercial towing service to help him off the reef. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Stroke victim shares struggle Vancouver Island resident Ben Sullivan knows about the struggles people face after they suffer a stroke.

He had a stroke at 37, which left him with limited mobility and he wasn’t able to work.

About 6,500 people suffer a stroke in the province every year.

It can put stress on family, and dramatically change the lives of survivors, but people can get help through medical specialists and the Stroke Recovery Association of B.C. Sullivan is sharing his experiences during the association’s Education Day, Dealing with Life After Stoke, in Nanaimo Saturday (June 8).

The event is free and open to the public and people who have suffered a stroke or family members, caregivers and medical practitioners are invited to attend.

Weak laws, increased tanker traffic continue to threaten world’s oceans

There are a number of threats to the health of the Georgia Strait that a local advocacy group wants to highlight for World Oceans Day Saturday (June 8).

Shipping, increased oil tanker traffic, decreased federal funding for research and the weakening of laws to protect Canada’s oceans are some threats on the horizon to the wellbeing of the waters local residents know and love, said Christianne Wilhelmson, executive director of the Georgia Strait Alliance.

One of the big concerns for the alliance is the decrease in feder-

ally funded scientific research – one example is the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ decision to close down the marine pollution unit at the Institute of Ocean Science in Sidney, she said.

Wilhelmson said if no one is there to study long-term impacts of marine pollution, people won’t know the harm being done to the marine environment until it is too late.

Laws that protect Canada’s oceans have been gutted, she added.

Cut at city hall likely not last

The decision by the city manager’s office to trim senior level staffing is a small step in addressing looming budget pressures, but it is also an indication city hall is running as lean an organization as possible.

Earlier this week, it was announced that the departure of Doug Holmes, the general manager of corporate services and assistant city manager, would, in the long term, save taxpayers about $170,000 annually.

It was likely a tough decision – Holmes was an asset to senior management – but also a statement the city is aware the role of municipal government is to provide its citizens with key services, not to provide jobs.

It was also the first step in the realization that for Nanaimo, and most other cities, that the days of modest property tax rate increases are likely over for the foreseeable future.

This year’s property tax rate increase for residential properties was 2.8 per cent. Despite the howls of protest by city watchdogs that property tax rate increases should be zero per cent, 2.8 per cent will be welcome compared to what residents face in the years ahead.

According to the 2013-17 financial plan, ratepayers can expect an increase of 4.7 per cent in 2014, 3.5 per cent in 2015, four per cent in 2016 and 3.9 per cent in 2017.

Embedded in that is a one per cent increase for the indefinite future to address municipal infrastructure costs, a concern for all Canadian cities. But it doesn’t include an ongoing 7.5 per cent annual increase for water services, five per cent increase in sewer fees and 3.9 per cent increase to garbage and recycling fees.

With major projects like the water treatment facility and dam removals on the horizon, both mandated by senior levels of government, this will likely be the first of many cost cutting measures to be implemented.

The B.C. government has to face some other uncomfortable realities as well. If heavy oil pipelines are such a risk, how does B.C. manage the one that has stretched across remote and populated areas for 60 years?

Does the government take a stand against new pipelines, and then watch as rail cars full of heavy oil cross those same rivers? Partygoers are heroes To the Editor,

Re: Fire displaces nine residents, June 4.

I was present at the ‘house party’ that the article mentions.

I am slightly offended by the connotation that the party hindered the fire department and caused chaos.

In fact, two members of this party are responsible for freeing trapped members of the household from the burning building.

They put their own lives in danger to assist the family of the upper suite in escaping

when pressure and smoke inside the house prohibited them from being able to pull the door open.

As the house members were brought to safety, they were provided with clothing off our backs, blankets and a safe haven away from the blaze.

I understand the fire department may have been caused an inconvenience, but in the six minutes it took them to arrive I am not sure whether the family would have been able to escape were it not for the courageous actions of members of our community.

Our main concern was getting everyone out, and to a safe place. I am thankful for everyone who was there in that moment and acted immediately.

Six minutes is a long time when it only takes 90 seconds for a house to be engulfed.

The firemen and volunteers acted with great integrity as always, but those in our community who went above and beyond should be commended for their actions, not chastised for causing chaos.

Voter loses faith in election choices Insulation Sale $ To the Editor,

The public decisions by five city councillors regarding the Colliery Dam Park debacle leaves me feeling disgusted and furious with myself for having voted for women and youth.

Lorne Gale, an engineer and member of the Colliery Dam Preservation Society, explained dam safety ratings are based on the number of people affected if a dam fails.

For example, in 2010, the Colliery dams were rated ‘high’ risk because 10 people might drown if the dams failed or Nanaimo had an ‘extreme weather event.’ In 2012, they were rated ‘extreme’ because suddenly 100 people might drown for the same reasons.

The dams are as solid and stable now as they were in 2010 when the risk was ‘high’ so what’s the difference?

nies know rivers, dammed or not, flood, and won’t insure homes for flood damage.

Yet the City of Nanaimo allows development on the flood plain – take a look at the Official Harewood Community Plan – and uses the increasingly high dam safety rating as an excuse to gut south Nanaimo’s major and only park.

When the trees are gone, the Chase River is diverted and the November 2014 municipal election over, does anyone really believe a new council will spend money rebuilding these dams?

It’s far cheaper to push roads through and build houses in the 95 hectares surrounding the existing park than to keep ancient promises by a previous council.

Downtown BIA not doing its job To the Editor,

The Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Asso-

ciation is a master at spewing malarkey, just as it is at lavishly spending our money.

I received a letter from the BIA, applauding itself – claiming it’s saving all of us tax money when in fact it is the very group which approves and asks for the tax gouge it shoves down our throats every five years and empties our pockets even quicker.

It’s like me winning an award after I stop punching someone after five years.

Wake up city council.

Quit listening to your advisors and this group of selfserving few who tell you fables of how great they are building utopia.

The BIA does little to help the downtown with the money it snatches from all of us each year.

Most of the money is going to make just a few smile with the pot of gold they eagerly take.

Neighbourhood not a speedway To the Editor,

Re: Address root of speed issue, Opinion, May 30.

For quite some time, I have been debating contacting Nanaimo’s bylaw office in regards to speeding traffic down the hill on College Drive between Kaz Court and Harwell Road.

This happens mostly at rush hour mornings and evenings. Do these speeders think they are already on the Nanaimo Parkway?

It’s a quiet residential neighbourhood of families with young children and pets.

If the city would install two or three speed bumps down the steep hill, it would slow drivers down and serve as a reminder to them that people live here.

It’s not too much for council to consider since we pay enough property taxes in College Heights.

That’s why a proposal to use diesel trains for the Air-RailLink plan to connect downtown Toronto with its international airport in Mississauga is concerning.

A rapid transit link with the airport is long overdue, but heavy diesel trains emit particulates and other contaminants, including known car-

cinogens. The proposed rail line would be close to dozens of schools and daycare centres, several longterm care facilities and a chronic respiratory care hospital.

Vancouver, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and New York City rank among the most livable cities on the continent, in part because they take the environment into account

for planning decisions. They all have world-class public transit systems that move residents in a safe, affordable and sustainable way. It’s time for Toronto to do the same. Country band releases debut album I T MOONSHINE MOLLYS perform show with special guests at the Cedar Community Hall.

he Moonshine Mollys music is taking flight with the release of the band’s debut album Free as a Bird.

The country vocal group from Cedar is celebrating the accomplishment with a album release party Saturday (June 8) at Cedar Community Hall.

The band has four members: Cassandra Smith, Denise Gray, Rene Qualizza and Mitra Kostamo. They have been performing together since the spring of 2012.

The members love country music and sharing their passion with their fans.

“Performing is a way to connect with others, meet new friends and just share the love,” said Smith in a press release.

The doors for the release party open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 6:30 p.m. The evening features a number of musical guests including Kotarah Rivere, Verlyn Busch, James Wellmer, Gabrielle MacQueen, the Jane Doe Band, Gavin McGonville and Joel Wiggers from Braeden Marshal.

The release party will also have a concession, which will raise money for the Cedar 4-H Club.

Tickets are $10 in advance, available from www.moonshinemollys.com and Harbour City Music, or $15 at the door. The band will also be performing during the Miners Picnic, located at 260 Irwin St., on June 22.

Montgomery loves sharing his passion for music with fans during shows

There isn’t anything Wayne Montgomery loves more than getting out into the crowd and interacting with his fans.

“I get that electric feeling from the crowd. I feed off them,” he said. “I am high energy. The band gets tired of watching me.

A lot of it is the passion for the music.”

Montgomery said his passion is similar to one of his idols, Elvis Presley. The King of Rock

really got into his music because it was a part of him, said Montgomery. It’s how the singer feels about his own performances.

“I just love the music and I feel the music,” he said.

One of his other musical influences is Garth Brooks. Montgomery said he respects how Brooks values friends and family.

The singer is performing with his band, Montgomery County, at the Queen’s Friday (June 7). The performance features an opening act by Nanaimo’s

A Victoria-based artist, Montgomery is recording his debut album at the Mount Wells Studio. The album will include several original songs written by Montgomery. He said his inspiration for songs comes from a variety of life experiences.

One song, It Just Goes On, is about a boy who is dealing with the death of his grandfather.

Another of his songs Cowboy Friday Night is about people meeting at the bar Friday after work. Montgomery said it could be set anywhere and the main theme of the song is meeting with friends.

The show at the Queen’s is the third time the band has performed in Nanaimo. The first show in February was packed.

Montgomery said it he likes to see a full crowd, but even if

just five people show up he’ll perform from his heart. He said it’s about putting priority on the people who showed up not empty chairs.

Tickets are $8 and are available at the Queen’s. Music begins at 9:30 p.m. and a DJ duo, the Mewwws, will spin country hits between the musician’s performances.

Brigadoon Dance Academy is bringing a little bit o’ Scotland to Nanaimo.

The academy presents its 17th annual Pride of Scotland on Sunday (June 9) at 2:30 p.m. at the Port Theatre. The show features more than 100 Island dancers.

Jillian Peacock, a dancer performing in the show, said she loves highland dancing because it’s challenging.

“It is something that you can never perfect, but perfection is the goal,” she said.

She said the show expands people’s horizons about the different dances people pursue.

Play explores lover’s lives Doris and George meet once a year for a romantic tryst.

They have a deep emotional intimacy despite the brief annual encounter between them.

The two have met for nearly 25 years, but each of them also has a spouse they’ve kept in the dark about their other relationship.

The bond between Doris and George is explored in Bernard S l a d e ’s ro m a n t i c comedy Same Time, Next Year.

Writer and poet Mary Ann Moore is leading a women’s writing circle workshop this July.

The workshop, called Words in Progress for Writing Warriors, is a two-day workshop, July 27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and July 28 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Registration fees are $225 if people sign up before July 5 and $275 after that date.

The July 27 session will help writers get in touch with themselves and discover who is their inspiration, why people experience writer’s block and how to trust yourself. During the day people will examine their journals to discover their writing voice.

On Sunday, participants will meditate on the book they are meant to write and in the afternoon they will set a plan to accomplish their goals.

Ranger’s return covered on web It was the biggest game of lacrosse season, so far.

The Victoria Shamrocks and their team captain Scott Ranger took on the Nanaimo Timbermen on Wednesday at Frank Crane Arena in Western Lacrosse Association action. The game was played after press time.

The Shamrocks (4-1) went into the game tied for first place, while the T-men (1-3) were trying to get back on track after dropping three in a row.

Van Isle 360 sets sail soon Now called the Black Press Van Isle 360, it remains the Cadillac of yacht races.

The biennial yacht race circumnavigating Vancouver Island starts Saturday (June 8) at 10:30 a.m. at Nanaimo Harbour. Forty-two sailboats are entered.

The 580-nautical-mile odyssey will be raced in 10 legs over 15 days.

Surprising season ends with medal Soccer season ended up being full of surprises.

The Nanaimo District Islanders senior AA girls’ soccer team won bronze at provincial championships this past weekend in Courtenay, defeating L.V. Rogers 4-0 to claim a medal.

The regular season was disjointed, with game cancellations as opposing teams folded.

Despite that, ND peaked at playoffs, beat its rivals from Ballenas and won an Island title.

“We didn’t really get a lot of playing in, and nobody really expected us to win the Islands…” said Mikaela Docherty, Isles coach. “And before we knew it we were in provincials.”

NDSS seemed like underdogs at the big tourney, said the coach. Every other team arrived at the pitch in their matching track suits, while the Isles didn’t even have matching jerseys and shorts.

“We thought we were going to be the worst team. We weren’t sure. All the girls were so nervous,” Docherty said. “But we have a lot of really skilled players on our team and we all worked

The Nanaimo Acme Timbermen were able to do some team building, and they also built on their league-best record.

The city’s senior B lacrosse club (6-1) won both its weekend games on the road, defeating the Langley Warriors on Saturday 18-12 and then edging out the Royal City Capitals on Sunday in New Westminster, 12-11.

“We’re happy that we’re getting the results,” said Mike Maughan, the team’s coach. “The two on the weekend weren’t the prettiest wins, definitely some sloppy play at times, but the guys really did a good job of buckling down and doing what was needed to get the two points.”

The Acme Painting Timbermen had to work for their two points in the Sunday contest. Nanaimo trailed in the third period before a series of late goals put them up by two. The Caps got

one back, but then Nanaimo got possession and let Shane Chalker run around with the ball until time expired.

“It’s always nice for a coach to have a guy with wheels like that,” Maughan said. “They couldn’t get it off him.”

Kyle Noble had four goals in that game and Jon Diplock and Blair Pinnock had two each.

The day before, Dylan Benard, Ben Stebbins, Ryan Forslund, Joey Fendick, Cody Keating, Nick Agius and Pinnock had two each.

Pat Mallough was the winning goalie in both games.

The T-men had good roster numbers for the road trip, and even had to make three healthy scratches in the second game.

“It was definitely a good road trip for the boys to get together and hang out,” said Maughan.

Nanaimo’s best high school track and field athletes were right there with the very best in B.C. Several locals had top-10 finishes at the B.C. High School Tr a c k a n d F i e l d Championships this past weekend at Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park.

The best finish came from Wellington Secondary School’s Alyssa Mousseau, who won her junior girls’ 800-metre final.

The race was a photo finish, as Mousseau crossed the line in two minutes, 15.65 seconds, four onehundredths of a second ahead of Semiahmoo’s Julia Greer.

Pirates play another rival

Bantams trying for tourney title Nanaimo’s annual bantam tournament, always a highlight of lacrosse season, is back for another go round.

The Nanaimo District Lacrosse Association hosts its 33rd annual bantam tourney Friday (June 7) through Sunday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Action starts at noon Friday.

After splitting with two of the B.C. Premier

Baseball League’s best teams, the Pirates (1413) are getting ready to face another perennial power, the Victoria Mariners (18-9).

The Pirates took a game from both the Langley Blaze (27-6) and the Abbotsford Cardinals (14-8) last weekend.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done but

I think the guys are starting to believe,” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager.

GAME ON … The Pirates play the M’s Saturday (June 8) at noon and 2:30 p.m. at Serauxmen Stadium.

Nanaimo then hosts the Vancouver Cannons on Sunday with 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. game times.

The grandkids cannot stop talking about the motorcycles. GARDINER Frances Amelia It is with great sadness that Frances’ family announces her passing on May 24, 2013 at the age of 96, in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

Frances will be missed and lovingly remembered by sons, Gareth and Donald (Audrey); grandchildren: Craig Gardiner, Quentin Gardiner, James Gardiner, and Frances Gardiner; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, James in 1994; son, Theo in 1964; and daughter, Gail in 2005.

Frances was born and raised in Duhamel, Alberta where she met and married James Gardiner who was a school teacher in the area. They lived in Camrose, Edmonton and Bassano before moving to Marwayne, Alberta in 1954, where James had accepted the school principalship. They were active members of that community until they moved to Nanaimo, BC in 1968. While in Nanaimo, Frances spent many years working with the Nanaimo Homemakers Society. She spent many happy years in her condo at Highview Terrace in Nanaimo and travelling with friends and family. The last few years of her life were spent in the Kiwanis Lodge in Nanaimo, where she received excellent care and support. Frances lived a long and courageous life and will be missed by all who knew her.

A Memorial Service, honoring her life, was held at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Nanaimo on Saturday, June 1, 2013. Donations, in Frances’ name, may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

A shining star has gone out over Nanaimo, as our bright and beautiful daughter passed away with her loving parents by her side. Left to celebrate her short but adventurous life are her grandmother, Catherine Adkins; and parents, Fred and Carol; all of Nanaimo; her brother, Stuart; sister-in-law, Corinna; niece, Charlotte; and new baby nephew, Elliott of Manning, AB; Uncle Lewis and Aunt Marilyn Adkins of Kelowna; Uncle Raymond and Aunt Elizabeth Randall of Aldergrove, and cousins, James and Melanie Adkins; Megan, Derrick, and Jennifer Randall, and her extended family in BC, Alberta, Manitoba, and throughout Eastern Canada. She will be dearly missed by her local cadre of loving friends, and her worldwide network of friends and work colleagues, gathered during her extensive travels.

A diligent student of Hammond Bay Elementary, Dover Bay HS and Malaspina College (VIU), she graduated earning her BA in Anthropology with Distinction. After several years working with Boys and Girls Club in Nanaimo, she broadened her horizons while teaching English in S. Korea for two years, traveling throughout Asia during her vacations: sky diving, bungee jumping, riding elephants and enjoying the local cultures, food and customs. She then joined Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, working in their Youth Programs, for a contract in Asia, then transferred to the European / Mediterranean routes.

We wish to thank the dedicated nursing and support staff at St. Paul’s Hospital for their tireless and compassionate care, and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines staff for their extensive help during this time.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday June 8, 2013 at 2p.m. at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1 Newcastle Ave., Nanaimo.

Evelyn spent her younger years in Dauphin, Manitoba. In 1949 the family moved to Harewood, Nanaimo BC, where they raised the family. She belonged to the Bowen Park Seniors and the Ladies Auxiliary Harewood Fire Dept., Pioneers Society and Paradise Isle Seniors.

The family would like to thank the staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for their care and compassion. A family service was held Saturday, June 1, 2013.

Reinhardt, Frithjof

Frithjof Reinhardt passed away May 19, 2013. He leaves to mourn his wife, Katja; son, Christopher, and daughter-in-law Kim; granddaughter, Jennifer; daughters: Christine, Katharina and his brother, Juergen in Germany.

Frithjof was born on the island of Ruegen, Germany on September 28, 1928. In 1953 he immigrated to Canada where he married Katja. He was ordained as a Lutheran minister in 1961. After retiring in 1993, he and Katja moved to Nanaimo where he was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church.
