Bill Reid ‘taught us how to dream’

Friends and colleagues warmly remember Bill Reid, who lost his battle with cancer last week at the age of 78

Those are among the tributes arriving for Cloverdale’s Bill Reid, former MLA for White Rock-Surrey, B.C. minister of tourism, and executive director of the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce, who died from cancer last week at 78.

The colourful champion of business, community, and heritage causes is being warmly remembered by friends and colleagues from across Surrey, his beloved home province, and from as far away as Ottawa.

“British Columbia lost one of its most passionate promoters with the passing of Bill Reid,” Premier Christy Clark said, describing his “unparalleled love for his province” as minister of tourism during Expo 86, and heralding his “incredible graciousness to everyone he met.”

left public office, acting as a constant support for a variety of groups across Surrey.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill’s family,” Clark added. “We thank them for sharing him with British Columbia.”

NDP leader Adrian Dix said Reid made an invaluable contribution to Surrey and the province.

“As tourism minister, Bill helped put B.C. on the map during Expo 86,” Dix said, adding he was equally passionate and committed to promoting Surrey, White Rock and Cloverdale.

South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale MP Russ Heibert called Reid “A pillar of our city” who “stood at the very centre of the business, social and political life of our community.”

Ed Gavsie of Tourism Richmond called him a wonderful friend and mentor to the B.C. Chamber of Commerce and the Spirit of B.C. Committee. “A true gentleman.”

Chief Supt. Bill Fordy said he was a great friend of the Surrey RCMP who was involved in community policing programs in Cloverdale and South Surrey, “where his wise counsel and always positive and cheerful attitude will be truly missed.”

Reid worked with the Cloverdale/Port Kells office on

the Cloverdale Community Consultative Group, Integrated Services Group and the Homeless Committee.

“Through his efforts a soup kitchen was established which included laundry facilities and donated clothing for those that required it,” Fordy said. “The soup kitchen is no longer in existence, however those who originally operated it still partner today by providing meals at a local church.”

Reid also garnered community support, funds and assistance for Cloverdale Hyland House, a homeless shelter, worked alongside the Surrey RCMP and the city on anti-graffiti initiatives, and an array of community events, from the Cloverdale Rodeo Parade, Blueberry festival, and Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights.

Around the board table and particularly at the microphone, Bill’s upbeat attitude and constant smile was an inspiration to us all.

He believed in community involvement and tirelessly and con-

stantly involved his many friends and acquaintances in Cloverdale events and Surrey fundraisers.

His enthusiasm and generosity was legend and everyone enjoyed working with him simply because he was fun to be around.

As Surrey’s Citizen of the Year in 2013 and a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award, Bill was very proud of the hon-

You could count on Bill I wanted to share my memories and stories about my friend, Bill Reid. First of all, I do consider Bill Reid to have been a friend, because that is how Bill made you feel. Not by a long stretch was I ever in Bill’s inner circle of friends and family, but Bill had a way of making you feel that, at that moment, you were the most important person in his world.

I first met Bill in the mid 1960s, when he and my dad were both members of the Kinsmen Club. Little did I know that, decades later, Bill would play an important role in my life, as a mentor. When talking with students, about the benefits of volunteering, I would use Bill as an example.

Throughout my years as a high school administrator in Cloverdale, Bill was my “go to” guy, when it came to seeking support for high school projects and activities.

Everything from supplying “I Love Surrey” pins for visiting Japanese students to pushing for more playing fields in Cloverdale, I could

count on Bill to champion the cause.

The phrase “pillar of the community” described Bill to a T. The support and strength that Bill brought to Cloverdale will most certainly be missed.

I know that the reality is that when someone passes away, life goes on. For those of us who considered Bill a friend, that life just won’t be the same.

I can say without reservation that Bill Reid was one of the finest ambassadors of our city, our province and our country.

Bill was exceptional in his tireless efforts to promote Surrey and Cloverdale, and the rest of the Fraser Valley.

He has left a legacy of giving back to the community that will be remembered for generations.

Bill never shied away from work, and during his time was not only a provincial and local politician, but contributed significantly through his leadership roles on Surrey, White Rock and Cloverdale chambers of commerce.

While he will be missed by so many, the legacy of his community work will live on indefinitely.

Bill Reid’s passion for the community of Cloverdale and for the City of Surrey was outstanding and will not be forgotten.

He has given thousands of voluntary time to various community endeavors and is a role model for everyone in the community. He has been an inspiration to all those who have worked with him to go above and beyond their normal course of duty to the citizens in the area. He will be missed by all those who have had the privilege of working with him.

He was a newspaperman to the end We have experienced the sudden and unexpected loss of a friend and colleague. Ron West worked for Black Press for 23 years, first as a photographer, and later as a company courier, knitting together disparate newsrooms, sales departments, warehouses and offices across the Lower Mainland.

Ron was a big, sweet, gentle soul. While he wasn’t a natural gossip, it was Ron we looked to for our daily dose of discreet company chatter. His quiet humour and shy smile made his daily visits a bright spot in the workday.

We learned only this week that Ron could sometimes be found at the Surrey office on Saturdays,

Ron loved photography. Birds were a favourite subject.

Back in his darkroom days at the Surrey Leader, he was an “ambulance chaser” – capturing car accidents, fires, and assorted mayhem.

We featured some of his remarkable wildlife images in The Reporter: stern snowy owls in Delta, clever seagulls in White Rock, a nesting pair of devoted hawks in Port Moody, regal bald eagles in Deroche.

A while back, our photography chats ceased. Ron had developed cataracts and was on a waiting list for much-needed surgery.

One morning he revealed he

could no longer see well enough out of his shooting eye to use the camera he always kept close by, whether he was on his work rounds or at home in Whalley, where his balcony was frequented by a noisy northern flicker that liked to drill the metal railing and other feathered friends such as the chipper chickadee pictured at right.

We shared his concern that he might be robbed of his livelihood – the ability to drive – while waiting his turn for day surgery.

To our shock and profound sadness, he passed away at Surrey Memorial the very day he was to have it.

An active force until the past two months, when his illness forced him to step back from duties, Reid had long been at the centre of civic life, serving on a wide range of boards and committees, from the Cloverdale Rodeo, the Fraser Valley Heritage Society and the Surrey Heritage Society to city committees.

He had also served as president of the White Rock/South Surrey Chamber of Commerce, was vice president of the Cloverdale BIA and past governor for B.C. Kinsmen Clubs.

As executive director for the past 12 years, Reid was the “heart and soul” of the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce.

“Around the board table and particularly at the microphone, Bill’s upbeat attitude and constant smile was an inspiration to us all,” Hubert said. “Everyone enjoyed working with him simply because he was fun to be around,” he added. “Bill was a leader, a mentor and a very good friend to all of us.”

His absence is keenly felt at the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association, a partner of Destination Cloverdale on countless community initiatives.

“We were all blessed

by Bill Reid’s presence,” Cloverdale BIA executive director Paul Orazietti reflected. “He taught us how to dream and how to make our dreams come true.”

Surrey Coun. Linda Hepner said he never missed any major city event.

“He was Mr. Rodeo, Mr. Cloverdale, he was Mr. Peace Arch Crossing – he was everywhere,” Hepner said. “He had his hand in every corner of this city… we’re going to miss that smile.”

Reid made a practice of sitting through every Surrey council meeting, she said.

And when he was being thanked for one of his many accomplish-

ments, he was quick to pass the credit to someone else.

“He would focus on every single person at the meeting, and say how valuable they were,” Hepner said. “He never took that limelight for himself.”

In attempting to fill in some of Reid’s duties and meetings, Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce board member Ben Wevers is astounded at the number of meetings he attended on a weekly basis.

“Bill loved Surrey.

He loved it. Surrey was everything to him. He leaves a void,” Wevers said.

Rick Hugh first met Reid as a boy when his father and Reid were in

the Kinsmen Club.

Much later, Reid became a mentor to Hugh, who had become a school administrator.

“When talking with students about the benefits of volunteering, I would use Bill as an example,” Hugh said.

He could count on Reid to support high school projects and activities.

“Everything from supplying ‘I love Surrey’ pins to visiting Japanese students to pushing for more playing fields in Cloverdale, I could count on Bill to champion the cause.”

Born in Nelson, B.C., Reid and his wife Marion moved to Surrey in 1960. He owned a car dealership and

served eight years on Delta council before moving on to provincial politics. His name eventually became synonymous with Cloverdale, where he was regarded as the unofficial mayor.

“If you live in Cloverdale, chances are you have crossed paths with Bill Reid,” resident Stephanie Barrett recalled last week, describing him as a “good community man.”

Reid leaves behind his wife Marion, their four daughters and their families. A public memorial is in the works, but details were not available at press time. Visit cloverdalereporter.com for updates and more tributes.

By Nick Greenizan The large stand of trees just south of Highway 10 in Cloverdale may not look like much to the casual observer – except that it tends to stand out amongst the surrounding fields.

But a recent grant received by City of Surrey from CN Rail aims to make the location – called Mound Farm Park – a desirable one for walkers and nature-lovers alike.

Last week at a field adjacent the mound – which is usually blocked by a closed gate, accessed via a dirt road that connects to 168 Street – officials from the city, CN Rail and Tree Canada, as well as tree-planting volunteers from local organization Shah Satnam Ji, officially announced the project.

CN Rail, through its CN EcoConnexions program, gave the city $20,500, which will be used to plant shrubs and other foliage along an approximately 1,000-m stretch of farmland parallel to the train tracks.

Long-term development plans for the land include a trail system that extends alongside the new trees and into Mound Farm itself, where some trails already exist.

Once the newly planted trees are grown, they will “establish a visual buffer between the trail and the rail line,” City of Surrey parks manager Owen Croy said Friday when announcing the grant.

The project is one of 25 similar ones across Canada funded by CN Rail.

“We’re very pleased to provide financial assistance to make (this park) happen,” CN Rail executive vice-president of corporate services Sean Finn told the gathering.

“When you plant a tree, it’s not about today, it’s about tomorrow, and we really feel (future) generations of Surrey will benefit from these trees.”

Croy said the new foliage will provide habitat for various songbirds and other small animals, as well as act as hunting grounds for larger birds, such as owls, eagles and falcons, which already populate Mound Farm.

“What we want to do is establish a complete community of plants,” he said.

No timeline was given for completion of the project. Croy said a master plan for the park was developed about a decade ago, and the city has been “chipping away at it, bit by bit.”

It was designated as protected agricultural land at about the same time a master plan was created, Croy added, and the new perimetertrail system will not take away much, if any, of the agricultural area; the surrounding fields – all city owned – are actively farmed. The land also includes two heritage homes – Smith House and Snow House – on the mound itself.

Mound Farm Park itself is a drumlin – a glacial landform, which Croy called “a geological anomaly.”

“Sometimes, (Mound Farm) has taken a back seat to other important things people want – like soccer fields and playgrounds, but this place is protected forever and it’s not going away – the land is the real feature here, and it’s a beautiful thing,” he said.

Currently, the area is not open to the public, but Croy said that would obviously change once the new trails are in place.

Angle parking and possibly a picnic area would also be added to main store accommodate visitors.

The Dogwood Pacesetters held a Flyball tournament for dogs and their handlers last weekend at the Cloverdale Show Barn. Liz Pim and Griff, who’s 17 and a half, no longer compete but they were in attendance, and legends in the sport until Griff turned 13 years old. What has Pim learned from Flyball that can be transferred to life?

‘Consistency is the key! As you can see, Griff has got very short legs so he doesn’t run that fast, but he always got there in the end. He was always consistent.’ Flyball is played with two teams of four to six dogs and their handlers. It’s a sport that requires dogs (usually taller dogs) to jump four hurdles, activate a spring release board and pop a ball into the air. The dog then needs to catch it and score a goal. – Erin Mogul

Lord Tweedsmuir is on track Two athletes combined for five medals, lifting Lord Tweedmuir Secondary to 10th in the team standings at the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships in Langley.

Ben Ingvaldson, 16, led the LTS medal haul, winning gold and two bronze medals. The gold was in senior boys shotput, with a throw of 15.64m. He also won bronze in hammer throw and discus. His best toss was 51.93-m in hammer, and a throw of 45.26-m in discus edged fourth-place by eight centimetres.

It was its first ever, and it was a great success: the sun came out and everyone had a great time, organizers say, adding the school was packed with friends and families on May 24. “The kids all had an amazing time, and so did the parents,” says Adams Road PAC co-president Wendy Rachwalski. “Our amazing principal went in a balloon blast where she got soaked by balloons if the kids hit the target. And we were lucky enough to have ponies so the kids had an amazing time riding.” She says the event wouldn’t have been possible if not for all the fun fair leads, volunteers, staff, parents and help from the kids. Half the team plays for clubs outside of school when they’re not representing their high school, making this win a real testament to their school spirit and teamwork.

Civil Authorities: For Our Own Good The recent provincial election taught us all a few things. For example, we learned that the polls can be wrong. But I think we can learn something else as well.

Some of us were unhappy with the government that was elected. There are those who think it would be better to have no government at all.

The Old Testament book of Judges describes a time in ancient Israel’s history when there was no stable government. At some times, there were strong leaders called judges, and at other times, “every man did what was right in his own eyes.” In other words, there was anarchy.

It is no surprise that during these times of anarchy, life in Israel was miserable. This is because government is provided by God for the good of society. Good governments provide for justice and protection for citizens through the courts, police services and armed forces. They provide a safe environment where commerce can flourish. Absence of government produces conflict and poverty. Tweedsmuir girls bring home FV soccer banner

By Jennifer Lang The Grade 8/9 girls soccer team at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary is celebrating an exciting win at Fraser Valley championships.

The Panthers scored their way to the top spot

after beating all the other Surrey-seeded teams at the tournament, which started May 7 and wrapped up last week, with the finals on home turf at Cloverdale Athletic Park.

It feels great to win

the championship banner, but this win is all the more meaningful because half of the LTS Panthers team are competitors on the field outside of school.

such as Surrey United and White Rock Costal as part of the B.C. Soccer Premier League, a high performance soccer league.

The respective seasons for high school and the community leagues overlap, presenting certain challenges come spring time, and playoff season arrives.

Additionally, a lot of the players went to different elementary schools, where they faced each other as competitors on the soccer field long before arriving at Lord Tweedsmuir this school year.

But they put any lingering differences aside to unite under the Panthers banner at LTS, underscoring the level of good sportsmanship and teamwork involved.

“The girls actually worked together, it was just a pleasure to see,” said Bill Ougden, father of Kacee, Tweedsmuir’s player of the month in April, and who also plays for White Rock’s Coastal team.

Even LTS coach Brad Richardson has a daughter who plays for Surrey United – a rival team for some of the LTS players who are on other soccer teams.

This season, Lord Tweedsmuir’s stiffest competition came from Sulllivan Heights, and LTS lost to Queen Elizabeth at the Surrey championships, but that wasn’t the end. LTS and Sullivan Hieghts ended up at the Fraser Valley championships, where LTS blasted RE Mountain 11-2 May 7, then blanked Princess Margaret 8-0 May 14, and beat Sullivan Heights 3-1 May 16 in the semi finals. LTS then won 2-1 against Queen Elizabeth to take the Fraser Valley title on May 28.
